Edward 'Ed' Shiltz, 69, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away August
25, 2025, at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 23, 1956,
in North Platte, NE, to William and Ruth (Hamar) Shiltz, and graduated with the
Class of 1974 from Trego Community High School.

Michael Pfannenstiel:
Originally &nbsp;from Hays, Kansas

It is with deep sadness we report the death of Michael
Pfannenstiel, 74, of Buda, TX who passed away on August 24, 2025, from Agent
Orange related illnesses. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by his older brother Ron (2014).

There will be a Celebration of Mike’s life at 10:00 am on
Wednesday September 3, 2025.&nbsp; This
Celebration will be held at Celebration Community Church, 5790 230th
Ave. Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Following the
service, we will proceed to the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas,
where Mike will be laid to rest. If you would like to express your condolences
or share memories of Mike, please join the family for visitation and fellowship
beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time service.

Mike was born on 23 December 1950 in Hays, Kansas where he lived
for the first 17 years of his life. He was the son of Ted and Rosie (Kisner)
Pfannenstiel who owned and operated Ted’s Steakhouse. Working in the family’s
restaurant provided Mike with a lifelong appreciation for cooking. 

Mike met the woman that captured his heart, Anne E. Johnson,
at Chula Vista Community College in Chula Vista, Ca in 1975 and they were
married in 1977. Mike is survived by his wife Anne Elizabeth (Johnson) of 45
years. He is also survived by 2 sons, Dustin and Mark both of Austin, Texas. 1
daughter Erica Wood (Eric), New Braunfels, Texas and a grandson Jared
Pfannenstiel, Augusta, Maine. He is survived by 2 sisters, Debra Kingsley
(Doug) of Hays, Kansas, Christine Unrein (Bruce) of Hays, KS. and 1 brother Wesley
(Nancy) of Panama City, FL. 

Upon graduating from St. Josephs Military Academy in May of
1968, Mike attended the School of Automation in Kansas City, Missouri where he
was introduced to the world of computers. Mike enlisted in December of 1969
with the U.S. Navy and attended boot camp in San Diego, Ca. where he completed
Radioman A school in April of 1970. Mike volunteered for duty in Vietnam and
flew directly to Saigon, RVN. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Page County
LST1076, which was home ported out of Guam but was assigned river duty in
Vietnam. The ship performed duties in Chu Lai and Danang. Following the
decommissioning of the U.S.S. Page County in December of 1970, Mike was
assigned to BeachMasterUnitOne located in Coronado, Ca. In February of 1971 his
unit, Beach Party Team Bravo, was deployed to Southeast Asia where his unit
performed duties in Danang and was part of Amphibious Ready Group Alpha which
supported the Northern Pacific Region. In 1972 Mike again was deployed this
time with Beach Party Team Alfa and returned to Southeast Asia and returned to
Danang as part of Amphibious Ready Group Alpha. BeachMasterUnitOne Beach Party
Team Alfa took part in removing the mines from Haiphong Harbor, North Vietnam
during Operation End Sweep, from December 1972 to February of 1973. In December
1973 Mike was discharged from the US Navy. Due to Agent Orange contamination
Mike was classified as a 100% disabled Vietnam Veteran.

After Mike’s discharge he served 4 years with the US Navy as
a civilian communications specialist in Coronado, Ca. and in 1978 applied for
employment with the Central Intelligence Agency and was hired in August of
1978. Mike served in the CIA from 1978 through 2005 as a Staff Officer and
lived with his family in various overseas and stateside locations. Mike retired
as a Senior Communications Intelligence Officer and upon retirement received
the Career Commendation Medal for exemplary service significantly above normal
duties that had an important contribution to the Agency's mission. Mike served
a total of 45 years working for the Government as an enlisted military
communications operator, a CIA staff officer and as a Government Communications
contractor. Mike enjoyed baseball and movies and was passionate about playing
competitive steel tip darts. Mike earned numerous trophies and team events
throughout his long association within the darts world. He met some of the
world’s top players and enjoyed exchanging stories with them. Mike became a
member of the local VFW Post 3377 in Manchaca, TX upon retirement in 2016 and
served in many capacities such as House Committee Chairman, Canteen Manager,
Post Adjutant, Junior Vice Commander, Senior Vice Commander, Post Commander and
for many years was the editor of the VFW Post 3377 newsletter and VFW Post
3377’s Website. Mike wished to be buried in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in
WaKeeney, Kansas where his uncle Marvin Pfannenstiel also lies in rest. Asked
why there, he said “I want to lay in a field with Hero’s”.

Michael Pfannenstiel

Leora ‘Lefty' Compton, age 92, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Hays.  She was born August 6, 1933, on the family farm northwest of Atwood, Kansas, to Theodor C. and Anna M. (Focke) Domsch.  

Leora was baptized into the Lutheran faith on August 14, 1933, in Blakeman and confirmed on March 30, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ludell.

She married Dick Compton who was from Lake City, Kansas, in Atwood in April of 1961. They lived in Atwood until relocating to Hays in 1968.  The couple had no children.

Leora was the fourth of six children.  There were five boys.  Her brothers tagged her with the nickname of “Lefty”, and she was affectionately known by that by all her friends and relatives throughout her life.  She attended rural schools in Rawlins County, Kansas through the 8th grade and graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1951.  Leora spent 14 years working for the United States Department of Agriculture prior to moving to Hays.  In Hays, she worked for the Federal Land Bank until she retired in 1989.

Leora was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Hays.  In retirement, she enjoyed working with the church’s Ladies Guild members, tying quilts that were sent to underprivileged people overseas.  She also enjoyed working in her yard and watching the birds.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Nyla Domsch, of Colby, KS; her brother-in-law, Rusty Lake, of Lake City, KS; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.   

Lefty was preceded in death by her parents, Theodor C. and Anna M. Domsch; her husband, Dick Compton; her brothers, Robert Domsch; Donald Domsch; Gene Domsch; James Domsch; and Thedore Domsch. 

A Celebration of Life gathering will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, September 5, 2025, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Atwood, Kansas, with Pastor Richard Schneider, Officiating.  The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Monday, at the church. 

Inurnment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Atwood, Kansas, followed by a lunch at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials made payable to: Grow Hays for (Community Center Project) or Humane Society of the High Plains in care of Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22 Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Leora ‘Lefty' Compton

Priscilla F. Rorstrom of Hays, Kansas passed away peacefully
in her sleep on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Via Christi Village.&nbsp; She was 88 years old.&nbsp; 

Priscilla was born on March 26, 1937 in Boston,
Massachusetts, the daughter of Ralph Irving Freeman and Ella Brewster (Cornish)
Freeman.&nbsp; Priscilla grew up on Cape Cod
in the town of Sandwich, Massachusetts at Bay View Farm, a property that had
been in her family for generations.&nbsp; As a
child she was surrounded by extended family.&nbsp;
Along with her parents and younger brother, Irving, various aunts,
uncles and grandparents also shared the house at different times.&nbsp; The home was the center of frequent family gatherings
involving the greater extended family from nearby towns on the Cape and beyond.&nbsp; There are numerous stories of childhood
adventures with her brother and cousins at the beach and on the farm.&nbsp; Her high school class had only six class
members; therefore, she played flute in the local Shawme Orchestra.&nbsp; She was also active in the Camp Fire Girls
and was the scorekeeper for the school basketball team.

After high school, Priscilla attended Framingham State
Teachers College, where she graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home
Economics.&nbsp; After college she worked with
special needs children at the Riverview School in Sandwich from 1959 to 1960.&nbsp; On October 15, 1960 she was united in
marriage to Eric G. Rorstrom at the Federated Church in Sandwich.&nbsp; Eric and her brother were fraternity brothers
at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which facilitated their meeting.&nbsp; After marriage, the couple rented a small
house in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Shortly
thereafter, Eric was called into the Army Reserves at the onset of the Berlin
Wall Crisis.&nbsp; She gave birth to their
first child, James, in August of 1961 while Eric was stationed at Fort Dix, New
Jersey.&nbsp; Subsequently, she returned to
the Cape with her baby to live with her parents in Sandwich until Eric was
discharged from the Reserves following the second Berlin Wall crisis in 1962.&nbsp; Being able to now resume a normal life, Eric
pursued his career as a mechanical engineer at the Riley Stoker Corporation in
Worcester, Massachusetts and they purchased a home in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Priscilla chose to continue as a stay at home
mom and was involved with the choir at the Holden Baptist Church.&nbsp; She gave birth to their second child, John,
in 1965.

In 1967, Eric began employment with the Pratt &amp; Whitney
Aircraft Corporation and the family relocated to Marlborough, Connecticut.&nbsp; They became members of the Marlborough
Congregational Church and then, in 1978, became members of Trinity Covenant
Church in Manchester, Connecticut.&nbsp; They
were active in the choir, Bible studies, prayer groups and served in various
leadership capacities at both churches.&nbsp; Priscilla
was also active in the local PTA and was a room mother for both boys as they
progressed through elementary school.&nbsp; She
enjoyed flower gardening and was an active member of the Marlborough Garden
Club for many years, receiving awards for her flower arrangements at the annual
house and garden tour.&nbsp; She was highly
skilled at sewing, embroidery, knitting and crocheting.&nbsp; She utilized her skills to produce much of
her own clothing, sport coats for Eric, costumes for the boys, Scandinavian
style sweaters and decorative items.&nbsp; Priscilla’s
love of music resulted in her embracing the recorder in the mid 1970’s.&nbsp; After becoming proficient at the instrument,
she joined the Lake Consort.&nbsp; The group
performed their repertoire of music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque
periods at churches and other venues into the late 1980’s.&nbsp; These years were also marked by the annual
family camping trips to the White Mountains and, in 1978, a month long motor
home adventure tour of the U.S.

In 1979, with the oldest son entering college, Priscilla
decided to return to work and took a position as the secretary in the high
school audio visual department.&nbsp; She
remained there until 1988, at which point she became a secretary at Trinity
Covenant Church and remained in that capacity until retirement.&nbsp; In the following years she enjoyed continuing
in her many activities and frequent visits to the family homestead on the Cape.


She also enjoyed traveling with Eric to Maine, Prince Edward
Island and England as well as trips to see her sons and their families in
Kansas and New Hampshire.&nbsp; Grandchildren
had begun to arrive a few years earlier, in 1995.&nbsp; As this next generation grew, she enjoyed
sharing her faith, wisdom, skills, life stories and extensive family history
with them. 

Throughout their 55 years in Marlborough, Priscilla was
known for her love of hospitality and entertaining - blessing family and
friends with sumptuous meals at their home, contributing to church suppers,
making meals for shut-ins and the bereaved, as well as welcoming new families
to the neighborhood with a fresh-baked loaf of bread and other goodies.

In 2022, Priscilla moved with her husband Eric to Hays, Kansas
to be closer to her family.&nbsp; In Hays they
have been involved with the North Oak Community Church and have enjoyed making
friends in the church and community.&nbsp; 

Priscilla is survived by her husband Eric of Hays, two sons
- James Rorstrom and wife Jane of Hays and John Rorstrom and wife Theresa of
Austin, TX, her brother - Irving Freeman and wife Carolyn of Sandwich, MA, four
grandchildren - Katarina Clinton and husband Mark of Southern Pines, NC, Hans
Rorstrom and wife Hannah of Claremore, OK, Eric Rorstrom of Kansas City, MO,
and Carl Rorstrom of Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; There
are three great grandchildren - Hope, Svea, and Cathan. She was preceded in
death by her parents.

A memorial service will be held at North Oak Community
Church.&nbsp; The date is pending and will be
announced by Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp;
Private family inurnment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Sandwich, Massachusetts.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are
suggested sent to: &nbsp;North Oak Community
Church, 3000 Oak St., Hays, KS&nbsp; 67601.&nbsp; Write: “Memorial – Priscilla” on the memo

uncles and grandparents also shared the house at different times.&nbsp; The home was the center of frequent family gatherings
involving the greater extended family from nearby towns on the Cape and beyond.&nbsp; There are numerous stories of childhood
adventures with her brother and cousins at the beach and on the farm.&nbsp; Her high school class had only six class
members; therefore, she played flute in the local Shawme Orchestra.&nbsp; She was also active in the Camp Fire Girls
and was the scorekeeper for the school basketball team.After high school, Priscilla attended Framingham State
Teachers College, where she graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home
Economics.&nbsp; After college she worked with
special needs children at the Riverview School in Sandwich from 1959 to 1960.&nbsp; On October 15, 1960 she was united in
marriage to Eric G. Rorstrom at the Federated Church in Sandwich.&nbsp; Eric and her brother were fraternity brothers
at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which facilitated their meeting.&nbsp; After marriage, the couple rented a small
house in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Shortly
thereafter, Eric was called into the Army Reserves at the onset of the Berlin
Wall Crisis.&nbsp; She gave birth to their
first child, James, in August of 1961 while Eric was stationed at Fort Dix, New
Jersey.&nbsp; Subsequently, she returned to
the Cape with her baby to live with her parents in Sandwich until Eric was
discharged from the Reserves following the second Berlin Wall crisis in 1962.&nbsp; Being able to now resume a normal life, Eric
pursued his career as a mechanical engineer at the Riley Stoker Corporation in
Worcester, Massachusetts and they purchased a home in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Priscilla chose to continue as a stay at home
mom and was involved with the choir at the Holden Baptist Church.&nbsp; She gave birth to their second child, John,
in 1965.In 1967, Eric began employment with the Pratt &amp; Whitney
Aircraft Corporation and the family relocated to Marlborough, Connecticut.&nbsp; They became members of the Marlborough
Congregational Church and then, in 1978, became members of Trinity Covenant
Church in Manchester, Connecticut.&nbsp; They
were active in the choir, Bible studies, prayer groups and served in various
leadership capacities at both churches.&nbsp; Priscilla
was also active in the local PTA and was a room mother for both boys as they
progressed through elementary school.&nbsp; She
enjoyed flower gardening and was an active member of the Marlborough Garden
Club for many years, receiving awards for her flower arrangements at the annual
house and garden tour.&nbsp; She was highly
skilled at sewing, embroidery, knitting and crocheting.&nbsp; She utilized her skills to produce much of
her own clothing, sport coats for Eric, costumes for the boys, Scandinavian
style sweaters and decorative items.&nbsp; Priscilla’s
love of music resulted in her embracing the recorder in the mid 1970’s.&nbsp; After becoming proficient at the instrument,
she joined the Lake Consort.&nbsp; The group
performed their repertoire of music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque
periods at churches and other venues into the late 1980’s.&nbsp; These years were also marked by the annual
family camping trips to the White Mountains and, in 1978, a month long motor
home adventure tour of the U.S.In 1979, with the oldest son entering college, Priscilla
decided to return to work and took a position as the secretary in the high
school audio visual department.&nbsp; She
remained there until 1988, at which point she became a secretary at Trinity
Covenant Church and remained in that capacity until retirement.&nbsp; In the following years she enjoyed continuing
in her many activities and frequent visits to the family homestead on the Cape.
She also enjoyed traveling with Eric to Maine, Prince Edward
Island and England as well as trips to see her sons and their families in
Kansas and New Hampshire.&nbsp; Grandchildren
had begun to arrive a few years earlier, in 1995.&nbsp; As this next generation grew, she enjoyed
sharing her faith, wisdom, skills, life stories and extensive family history
with them. Throughout their 55 years in Marlborough, Priscilla was
known for her love of hospitality and entertaining - blessing family and
friends with sumptuous meals at their home, contributing to church suppers,
making meals for shut-ins and the bereaved, as well as welcoming new families
to the neighborhood with a fresh-baked loaf of bread and other goodies.In 2022, Priscilla moved with her husband Eric to Hays, Kansas
to be closer to her family.&nbsp; In Hays they
have been involved with the North Oak Community Church and have enjoyed making
friends in the church and community.&nbsp; Priscilla is survived by her husband Eric of Hays, two sons
- James Rorstrom and wife Jane of Hays and John Rorstrom and wife Theresa of
Austin, TX, her brother - Irving Freeman and wife Carolyn of Sandwich, MA, four
grandchildren - Katarina Clinton and husband Mark of Southern Pines, NC, Hans
Rorstrom and wife Hannah of Claremore, OK, Eric Rorstrom of Kansas City, MO,
and Carl Rorstrom of Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; There
are three great grandchildren - Hope, Svea, and Cathan. She was preceded in
death by her parents.A memorial service will be held at North Oak Community
Church.&nbsp; The date is pending and will be
announced by Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp;
Private family inurnment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Sandwich, Massachusetts.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are

James 'Jim' LeRoy Moore - 85 of Hays, Kansas passed
away on Saturday, August 16th, surrounded by his family at the Russell Regional
Hospital, Russell, Kansas.

He was born February 6, 1940, in Oswego, Kansas, to Hankie and
Ethel Moore, and raised in Hallowell, KS.

He married Nancy Cormeny on April 19th, 1958. He worked for
Midwest Energy as an operator and retired after 40 years of service. He
attended school at Oswego, Kansas and attended some college. He was an avid
outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting and camping, and he passed on his love
of fishing to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he was also proud of
his Native American heritage.

Jim is survived by his wife, Nancy of the home; his children:
Beverly Windholz and husband Lester of Ogallah, KS; Tammy Hostadt and husband
John of Wichita, KS; and his grandchildren: Tyler and wife, Melanie Windholz,
Aaron Windholz and Lacey Windholz, Dustin and wife, Logan Hohstadt, Cassandra
Hohstadt, great grandchildren: Elliot Hohstadt, Willow, Evelynn and Layla
Windholz; sister-in-law: Betty Moore, and brother-in-law: Harry Cormeny, and
many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, brother,
Robert Moore; sister, Frieda Cormeny; sister in law Elnora Hayden and brother
in law Tom Hayden, father and mother in law Robert and Rosalie Cormeny.

Gerald Lee 'Gary' Meis,
89, of Russell Kansas, died Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Russell Regional
Hospital.

Gerald was born on August 4, 1935,
in Catherine, Kansas and was the son of Aegedius Meis and Celestina (Karlin)
Meis.&nbsp; He grew up in Catherine and
attended school there and later in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He worked in the dairy business in his early
years before joining the Navy, where he served as an Aircraft Mechanic.&nbsp; He was joined in marriage to Gracia Ostrom
(Rassette) on September 5th, 1956, in St. Mary's Church in Russell,
Kansas.&nbsp; From this union, they were
blessed with 4 children - Randy, Rick, Shelley and Tessa.&nbsp; They were divorced in 1973.

During his life he worked on the
freight docks in Denver, Colorado at Red Ball Motor Freight and afterwards
moving to Houston, Texas, he worked at Con-Tech Engineering as a purchasing
manager until retirement.&nbsp; After this, he
moved to Russell, Kansas and started a pipeline construction and maintenance
business with his son, Rick.

He was born and baptized into the
Catholic Church.&nbsp; He was a member of the
Teamsters Union and Elks Lodge.&nbsp; He
enjoyed his work, spending time with his loved ones, and time with his friends.

Surviving family includes his son
Rick Meis, of Russell, Kansas, daughter Tessa Meis (Joe Ernst) of Wilson,
Kansas, sister Darlene Booth (Ronnie Booth) of Larned, Kansas, brother Dan Meis
of Yuma, Arizona, sister Fran Amidon (Mike Amidon) of Junction City, Kansas,
along with 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and
nephews. 

He was proceeded in death by his
parents, his son Randy, his daughter Shelley, his brother Ken Meis (Dolly
Meis), and his great granddaughter, Randi Rene Casper.

Cremation was selected by the
family.&nbsp; A graveside memorial service to
celebrate Gary’s life will be held at10:30 A.M. on Friday, September 19, 2025,
at the Dorrance City Cemetery in Dorrance, Kansas.&nbsp; Family will greet guests on the day of the
service at the cemetery.&nbsp;

with multiple cancer diagnoses.



She was born on June 2, 1960, in Hays, Kansas, to Everett and Donna (Ellis)
Mickelson. Billie grew up in Ellis and graduated from Ellis High School in 1978
before attending college.

Throughout her working years, Billie was employed primarily in retail sales.
She was known as a caring, strong-willed, and giving person who was always
willing to help others. A passionate sports fan, Billie cheered fiercely for
the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas Jayhawks. She also loved attending
concerts, spending time with friends, and especially rescuing and caring for
Boxers—an endeavor that became a true calling for her. Billie was also a proud
member of the Ellis VFW Auxiliary.



She is survived by her mother, Donna Dreiling of Ellis; her siblings, Fred
(Becky) Mickelson of WaKeeney, Greg (Becca) Mickelson of Ellis, Bob (Margie)
Mickelson of Ellis, and Mickie (Marvin) Dechant of WaKeeney; her honorary
daughters, Moriah Keller and Kelly Graves both of Colorado; stepdaughters,
Rachel Carnes of Colorado and Victoria Carnes of Phoenix; special friends,
Steve and Erin Malone of Lawrence, Kansas; eight nephews, three nieces,
numerous great-nephews and great-nieces; and her beloved Boxers, Axel and JoJo.



She was preceded in death by her father, Everett Mickelson; her daughter, Alice
Marie Mickelson; and her stepfather, Wilmer “Wimp” Dreiling.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 30, at Ellis United

Billie Mickelson Shippy

Janice
Elaine Johansen died peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the age of 90 at
Country Living in Larned, Kansas.&nbsp; 

She
was born September 5, 1934, in Elgin, Iowa, to Oliver and Reva (Swenson)
Torkelson.&nbsp; Jan was one of five children.&nbsp; She received her bachelor's degree, majoring
in Home Economics from the Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern
Iowa) in Cedar Falls, Iowa.&nbsp; While in
college, she met Dale, another student, on a blind date.&nbsp; They were married on December 29, 1955, in
Elgin, Iowa.&nbsp; In 1958, their first child
was born, Tom.&nbsp; At the time, Dale was
commuting between Cedar Falls and Iowa City, working on his Ph.D. degree.&nbsp; Jan worked as a substitute and full-time
teacher of home economics in Cedar Falls.&nbsp;
In 1963, Jan, Dale, and Tom moved to Wayne, Nebraska.&nbsp; Jan worked in the home taking care of her
son. In 1966, daughter Mary was born.&nbsp;
While Tom was growing up, Jan attended all of Tom’s football,
basketball, and baseball games.&nbsp; Jan had
many hobbies and interests, from playing cards, collecting antiques, cooking,
sewing, knitting, and golf.&nbsp; She was
active in the ladies’ league at Wayne Country Club for many years.&nbsp; Jan volunteered at her church, Redeemer
Lutheran Church, as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School Director and
teacher.&nbsp; In 1976, the family moved to
Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Jan continued to work in
the home while Mary was in grade school and middle school. She began working at
Fort Hays State University serving in several positions including Interim
Director of the Alumni Association. While with the Alumni Association, she
initiated several innovative programs that still exist today. Jan retired from
FHSU in 1991. She was also an avid golfer at Smoky Hill Country Club, active in
several bridge clubs, and a member of Chapter BQ of PEO in Hays. 

In
retirement, Jan and Dale traveled to watch their granddaughters’ activities,
including Elise’s concerts, Madelyn’s and Molly’s soccer and basketball games,
and Kiley’s golf tournaments for Hays High School (never missing a tournament)
and FHSU women’s golf. Elise, Kiley, Madelyn, and Molly enjoyed many years
going to “Gramma’s house” after school and spending quality time with Gramma
and Grampa. These were special times for the Johansen family. Jan and Dale
spent many summers in Iowa, playing golf and cards with her sisters and
brother-in-law. 

Jan
was the ultimate loyal and faithful servant to her church, family, friends, and
community. Whether it was making cookies and other sweets with her
granddaughters or attending family events, Jan supported her family with love,
compassion, and selflessness, and was the ultimate role model for her
granddaughters. Jan didn’t meet someone on the street without greeting them.
Her radiant smile and graciousness will be remembered always and cherished by
those who knew and loved her. 

She
is survived by her son Tom Johansen and his wife Vicki of Hays; daughter Mary
Martin and her husband Mike of Hays, four granddaughters: Elise Johansen Harvey
and husband Alex of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Kiley Johansen Barnett and
husband Reid of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Madelyn and Molly Martin of Hays; and eight
great-grandchildren Lincoln, Aria, Salem, Abram, Asher, Rosemary, Freya, and
Lucy.&nbsp; 

She
was preceded in death by her husband Dale; parents, Oliver and Reva Torkelson;
sisters Norma, Dorothy and husband Don, and Delores and husband Harry, and
infant brother Wayne.

Memorial
Services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Hays Memorial
Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Christine Wagner officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen
Cemetery.&nbsp; &nbsp;The family will receive friends from 9:00 am
until service time at the funeral home.&nbsp; A

was born September 5, 1934, in Elgin, Iowa, to Oliver and Reva (Swenson)
Torkelson.&nbsp; Jan was one of five children.&nbsp; She received her bachelor's degree, majoring
in Home Economics from the Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern
Iowa) in Cedar Falls, Iowa.&nbsp; While in
college, she met Dale, another student, on a blind date.&nbsp; They were married on December 29, 1955, in
Elgin, Iowa.&nbsp; In 1958, their first child
was born, Tom.&nbsp; At the time, Dale was
commuting between Cedar Falls and Iowa City, working on his Ph.D. degree.&nbsp; Jan worked as a substitute and full-time
teacher of home economics in Cedar Falls.&nbsp;
In 1963, Jan, Dale, and Tom moved to Wayne, Nebraska.&nbsp; Jan worked in the home taking care of her
son. In 1966, daughter Mary was born.&nbsp;
While Tom was growing up, Jan attended all of Tom’s football,
basketball, and baseball games.&nbsp; Jan had
many hobbies and interests, from playing cards, collecting antiques, cooking,
sewing, knitting, and golf.&nbsp; She was
active in the ladies’ league at Wayne Country Club for many years.&nbsp; Jan volunteered at her church, Redeemer
Lutheran Church, as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School Director and
teacher.&nbsp; In 1976, the family moved to
Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Jan continued to work in
the home while Mary was in grade school and middle school. She began working at
Fort Hays State University serving in several positions including Interim
Director of the Alumni Association. While with the Alumni Association, she
initiated several innovative programs that still exist today. Jan retired from
FHSU in 1991. She was also an avid golfer at Smoky Hill Country Club, active in
several bridge clubs, and a member of Chapter BQ of PEO in Hays. In
retirement, Jan and Dale traveled to watch their granddaughters’ activities,
including Elise’s concerts, Madelyn’s and Molly’s soccer and basketball games,
and Kiley’s golf tournaments for Hays High School (never missing a tournament)
and FHSU women’s golf. Elise, Kiley, Madelyn, and Molly enjoyed many years
going to “Gramma’s house” after school and spending quality time with Gramma
and Grampa. These were special times for the Johansen family. Jan and Dale
spent many summers in Iowa, playing golf and cards with her sisters and
brother-in-law. Jan
was the ultimate loyal and faithful servant to her church, family, friends, and
community. Whether it was making cookies and other sweets with her
granddaughters or attending family events, Jan supported her family with love,
compassion, and selflessness, and was the ultimate role model for her
granddaughters. Jan didn’t meet someone on the street without greeting them.
Her radiant smile and graciousness will be remembered always and cherished by
those who knew and loved her. She
is survived by her son Tom Johansen and his wife Vicki of Hays; daughter Mary
Martin and her husband Mike of Hays, four granddaughters: Elise Johansen Harvey
and husband Alex of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Kiley Johansen Barnett and
husband Reid of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Madelyn and Molly Martin of Hays; and eight
great-grandchildren Lincoln, Aria, Salem, Abram, Asher, Rosemary, Freya, and
Lucy.&nbsp; She
was preceded in death by her husband Dale; parents, Oliver and Reva Torkelson;
sisters Norma, Dorothy and husband Don, and Delores and husband Harry, and
infant brother Wayne.Memorial

Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Christine Wagner officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen

Janice Elaine Johansen

Larry Keith Keil, 74, Hays, died Sunday, August 24, 2025 at
Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born November 18, 1950 in Quinter, the son of Dell D.
and Mary Ann (Krannawitter) Keil.&nbsp; He was
a graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy with the class of 1968, and following
graduation he attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; Larry put his studies on hold from 1971 until
1973 when he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.&nbsp; On May 22, 1972, he was united in marriage to
Sandy Pfannenstiel at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Antonino.&nbsp; Sandy joined Larry in Germany where they lived
until he was discharged in 1973.&nbsp; While
in Germany, lifelong friendships were formed with Larry and his 501st Army
crew, and they continue to have reunions 50 years later.&nbsp; After returning to Hays, Larry continued his
education at Fort Hays State University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in science
and a Master of Science Degree.&nbsp; He was a
dedicated math and science teacher and taught one year in Hoisington then taught
in Hays at Kennedy Middle School and Hays Middle School, retiring after 38
years in the classroom.&nbsp; Along with
teaching, Larry coached middle school football, basketball, track, and his son
Garrett’s baseball team.&nbsp; Larry enjoyed
playing softball and building model cars.&nbsp;
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Third
Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166, Schoenchen, and the Hays American
Legion Post #173.

Survivors include his wife Sandy of Hays, his son Garrett of
Hays, two brothers, Jon Keil and wife Patricia of Charlotte, NC and Steve Keil
and wife Dawn of Hays, two sisters, Janet Karlin and husband Charlie of
Overland Park and Kay Murphy and husband Kevin of Edmond, OK, and numerous
nephews, nieces, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Jordan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday,
September 3, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Nick
Parker officiating.&nbsp; The family will

Larry K. Keil

Eugene Edward Schandler was born on January 31, 1930 in Pharr, Texas, to Bernard and Clara&nbsp;(Grimm) Schandler and died on August 20, 2025 in the Logan Manor at Logan, Kansas. The family moved back to Kansas in the 1930's and settled in New Almelo, Kansas. Eugene was the fourth of fivechildren. He attended New Almelo Grade School and graduated from Tipton High School in 1949. Eugene served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He often spoke of his time in Germanyand the many friends he made while in the Army.

Eugene married Pat Riemann on April 2, 1956. They were married for 60 years. Eugene andPat adopted two sons, Thomas Gerard in 1960 and Jerald Eugene (Damien) in 1964. Eugene and Pat farmed west of Logan, Kansas, where he was a dealer for VitaFerm for many years. Eugene was a devout Catholic and was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Eugene loved to share his wisdom with anyone who would listen... one of his favorite quotes was, “The best part of living is dying. The day you die is the most wonderful day of your life and ifyou don't believe that, then you're not living your life right!” Eugene had a special reverence to St.Faustina, whom he prayed to every day. He was the best role model anyone could ever have in order tolive the Christian life that God desires us to live.

Eugene was well known in the area for his straight forward, honest approach to life. Eugene fully embraced the simple things in life, and he always gave thanks to the Lord for all he received. Eugene never missed a chance to find the bright side of any situation that came up. While the hailstorms of his life would have devastated most men, Eugene embraced them and gave thanks to God&nbsp; for all the blessings that he still had. He held no grudges, but instead forgave and said prayers for all. He loved to visit with people, and never knew a stranger, as he could strike up a conversation with anyone he met. Eugene loved long talks with his friends and family on the phone, especially with his sister, Bernice, whom he considered his best friend.

Eugene entered the Logan Manor in February 2022. He enjoyed living there. Eugene often talked of the wonderful care he received and remarked he couldn't have asked for any better! Everyone that worked there loved him!

Preceding Eugene in death were his parents; wife, Pat; sons, Damien and Tom; sisters Marge (Jim) Hickert, Lorene (Charles) Meyer, Bernice (Henry) Becker, and brother Bob (Pam) Schandler.

Survivors include his daughter-in-law Sue; 2 grandsons, Nicolas and Jordan; 5 greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, August 29, 2025 at 10:30am at St. John Catholic Church in Logan, KS with Fr. Kerry Ninemire and Fr. Trinity Savariyar co-celebrants.  Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

Mr. Schandler will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Logan Funeral Home, Logan.   The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Logan Funeral Home followed by the family receiving friends from 7 – 8 p.m. for visitation.

Crosse, KS. Patty was born on February 05, 1932 in Jet, OK to the late Elbert
and Dorothy (Cellan) Jett.

Patty
was the wife of the late Billy Van Highfill. She worked as a bookkeeper at
their Case dealerships for years, &nbsp;later she worked at Barrows pharmacy as
a clerk for several years. &nbsp;She was an excellent seamstress and made
clothes for many Barbies of her grandchildren. &nbsp;She loved her
grandchildren and often had them over and played with them. &nbsp;She also
loved traveling, going to Santa Fe, NM, Oklahoma, attending horse shows with
her family, playing golf and playing cards with friends and family.

was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Billy Van Highfill; and
brothers: John and Jim Jett.

Patty
is survived by her children: Terry Highfill (Peggy), Dale Highfill (Rosemary),

Patty Ann Highfill

Peter ‘Pete’ Parke, 60, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on
August 19, 2025, at his home. He was born on August 31, 1964, in WaKeeney, the
son of Leo and Marion (Crawford) Parke.

Pete graduated from Trego Community High School with the
Class of 1983. He worked for a time at Performance Automotive Machine Shop
(PAMS) before devoting himself to farming and ranching. He took pride in caring
for his cattle, working the fields, and running the combine during harvest.

Pete had many passions and simple joys in life. He loved
attending dirt track races with friends, especially the winged sprint cars, and
he rarely missed morning coffee with his buddies. He was active in the WaKeeney
Eagles Auxiliary #3774 and was elected Vice-Chairperson of the Trego County
Farm Service Agency Committee. Pete also enjoyed bus trips to casinos,
attending seed meetings (where he especially appreciated the fellowship and
meals), and collecting antique John Deere tractors.

Survivors include his brothers, Jim and Dan; his sisters,
Rose and Kate; along with many extended family members and friends. He was
preceded in death by his sister, Mernie, and his parents, Leo and Marion Parke.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, from
5:00–7:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N. 12th St., WaKeeney. A Vigil
Service will take place at 7:00 p.m., followed immediately by the prayer of the
Rosary.

Peter ‘Pete’ Parke

Joan Carol Guyot, age 81, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at&nbsp;her home.  She was born on March 10, 1944, in Britton, South Dakota to Robert and Gladys (Planteen)Eastberg. 

She married Wally M. Guyot on June 1, 1963, at Highlanda Lutheran Church near Langford, South Dakota.  Joan and Wally were married for 62 years.

Joan attended a country school for eight years. She went to high school one year in Britton, South Dakota; and school consolidation moved her to Langford High School in Langford, South Dakota for the last three years. As a senior, she was the homecoming queen and salutatorian.

Joan earned a two-year teaching certificate from Northern State College in 1964 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Tennessee Technological Universityin 1976.  She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education.

Joan’s first teaching job was in the Aberdeen Public Schools, in Aberdeen, South Dakota where she taught second grade for three years. She substitute taught in all grades in public and private schools in Marshall, Minnesota; she also substitute taught in elementary schools in Hays USD 489.  Joan taught sixth grade in Gordonsville, Tennessee; and she taught seventh grade science for USD 388 in Ellis, Kansas for 11 years.

Joan’s strong faith was instilled in her during her time at Highlanda Lutheran Church, where she will join her parents at the Highlanda Church Cemetery. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for several years.

The holiday seasons were especially important to Joan. She loved decorating for various holidays. She always wanted the Christmas tree up early so she could decorate it—possibly two or three times before she was satisfied. Baking and decorating Christmas cookies, making several kinds of candy, and making holiday pastries all came from her early years growing up.  Other hobbies included decorating and gardening (flowers), something she truly enjoyed.  Evenings would find her reading or doing crossword puzzles.

 </figure>Joan Carol Guyot, age 81, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at&nbsp;her home. She was born on March 10, 1944, in Britton, South Dakota to Robert and Gladys (Planteen)Eastberg. She married Wally M. Guyot on June 1, 1963, at Highlanda Lutheran Church near Langford, South Dakota. Joan and Wally were married for 62 years.Joan attended a country school for eight years. She went to high school one year in Britton, South Dakota; and school consolidation moved her to Langford High School in Langford, South Dakota for the last three years. As a senior, she was the homecoming queen and salutatorian.Joan earned a two-year teaching certificate from Northern State College in 1964 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Tennessee Technological Universityin 1976. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education.Joan’s first teaching job was in the Aberdeen Public Schools, in Aberdeen, South Dakota where she taught second grade for three years. She substitute taught in all grades in public and private schools in Marshall, Minnesota; she also substitute taught in elementary schools in Hays USD 489. Joan taught sixth grade in Gordonsville, Tennessee; and she taught seventh grade science for USD 388 in Ellis, Kansas for 11 years.Joan’s strong faith was instilled in her during her time at Highlanda Lutheran Church, where she will join her parents at the Highlanda Church Cemetery. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for several years.The holiday seasons were especially important to Joan. She loved decorating for various holidays. She always wanted the Christmas tree up early so she could decorate it—possibly two or three times before she was satisfied. Baking and decorating Christmas cookies, making several kinds of candy, and making holiday pastries all came from her early years growing up. Other hobbies included decorating and gardening (flowers), something she truly enjoyed. Evenings would find her reading or doing crossword puzzles.Survivors include her husband, Wally, of the home; her daughter, Sherry Guyot, of the home; her niece, Jane Keanaaina (Obed); her nephews, Lane (Becky) Guyot; Lee (Candace) Guyot; and Willis (Deanna) Guyot. Vicki Louise McDowell, 77, of
Lucas, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 18, 2025. She was born
December 4, 1947, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Arvis and Christina
‘Louise’ (Corwin) Elliott.

Vicki grew up on a farm near
Paradise, Kansas, and graduated from Paradise Rural High School. She earned her
Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University, a
degree that fueled a lifelong passion for teaching and nurturing young minds.
Her first teaching job took her to an Indian reservation in South Dakota, where
she immersed&nbsp;herself in a new community and shared her gift for education.

On November 12, 1969, Vicki
married the love of her life, Jim McDowell. Together, they built a life full of
love and partnership. Vicki continued her teaching career in Smith Center and
Gaylord before moving to Sylvan Grove in 1980. She taught in Sylvan Grove until
her retirement, leaving an indelible mark on countless students throughout her
decades-long career. She had a unique ability to connect with every child,
making each one feel seen, valued, and capable.

Although Vicki never had children
of her own, she was the beautiful and irreplaceable glue that held her family
together. Her love for her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews was
boundless and unconditional. She loved and cherished each of them as her own,
filling their lives with warmth, guidance, and unwavering support. Her family
will forever remember her as a cornerstone of love, strength, and joy.

Vicki was preceded in death by
her parents, Arvis and Louise Elliott. She is survived by her loving husband,
Jim McDowell; her siblings, Dwight Elliott (Owassa, OK), Paul Elliott (Dodge
City, KS), and Arlene Morgan (Wichita, KS); and a large, adoring family of
nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Karen Rose Strachan, 76, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday August 12, 2025, at the University of Kansas Health Systems - Great Bend Campus in Great Bend, Kansas.

Karen was born on October 06, 1948, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Virgil Martin and Adelinde Marie (Leikam) Bollig. She grew up in Hays, Kansas, and graduated from Marian High School. She attended Fort Hays State University, majoring in education. She married James Moore in 1973, they later divorced in 1977. She had two children from that union, Martin and Melissa. Karen worked for many years as a secretary for the Hays Area SRS office and helped her father, Virgil, by working at A.S.B. Oil. After leaving the SRS office, Karen worked at local factories in the Hays area such as Adronics-Elrob and Enersys.

She was united in marriage to John W. “Jay” Strachan IV on January 27, 1990, in Hays, Kansas, and became stepmother to Robert and Lori. She later moved to the Russell area in 1996. She worked as a cook/dietary aide at the Russell Regional Hospital for 17 years and was a longtime member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading books and her dogs. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s activities.

Surviving family includes her son Martin Strachan of Russell, Kansas, daughter Melissa Wellbrock and husband John of Victoria, Kansas, stepson Robert Strachan of Hays, Kansas and stepdaughter Lori Riedel of Russell, Kansas; brother Wayne Bollig and wife Connie of Hays, Kansas, sister Donna Brohman of Downs, Kansas; and sister-in-law Kristine Bollig of Hays, Kansas. She has 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, and brother Dennis Bollig.

Cremation was selected by the family.  A memorial service to celebrate Karen’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.  A reception in the church fellowship hall will immediately follow the church memorial service. George Philip V passed away August 16, 2025. He was born in Hays on August 22, 1954, the oldest son of George “Scotty” Philip IV and Jacqulyn Clowers Philip. He is pre-deceased by his parents and two brothers, Ian and Gordon. Survivors include his son, George Philip VI (Camille Meritan) of Manhattan, his sister, Sheilah Philip (Bob Hartley) of Overland Park, and nephews Alec Philip (Kristen), Hudson Philip, and grand-nephew Evan Philip.

George lived in Hays his whole life, graduating from Hays High in 1972 and FHSU in 1977.  He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Speech Communication, but his passion was the study of Math and Physics, for which he nearly completed a Mathematics degree. Since age eleven he worked at the family business, George Philip Hardware and took over sole ownership in 1984 when his father died.  Just as the three generations before him, he operated the store that was a downtown staple until it closed in 1997. He continued to be called upon by many citizens of Hays for his breadth of skills in hardware, locksmithing, and repair work, so he opened GPH Fabrication and Repair which he operated until 2018. He then decided to go to work again in retail, doing inventory, hardware, and small tool repair at Heartland Building center until retiring in 2022.

He and his former wife, Nancy Mai, had a son, George VI, born in 1987. They were great friends as well as being father and son. They enjoyed working in his shop he had set up on the original family farmstead in Victoria restoring machinery, shooting, and designing and building things together.

George was, in many ways, a Renaissance man. When he was younger, he enjoyed horsemanship, fencing and tae kwon do. His skills in hardware, tools, locks, and repair work were balanced by his love of reading, classical music, and on-going study of physics and mathematics. He was involved in local politics and served as city commissioner and mayor. He had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed cooking and eating, and was the first person his sister knew who had a personal computer.

A memorial service to be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Brenda Rodger officiating.  Private burial will be in Mount Allen Cemetery at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hays Public Library, First Call for Help of Ellis County, or the Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging would be appreciated. George Philip V

Mary Catherine (Herrman) Dreher, age 92, passed away on August 18, 2025, at her home
at Dove Estates in Goddard, Kansas. She was born on September 18, 1932, the
daughter of Isidore and Albertina (Legleiter) Herrman, on the family farm in
Liebenthal, KS. 

On
November 21, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Alex J. Dreher, in St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal, KS, and officiated by her uncle, Msgr.
John George Herrman. Mary and Alex shared 57 years of marriage before his
passing on December 14, 2007. Together, they raised four children: Ronald,
Stephen, Cathy, and Laura.

Mary attended
St. Joseph’s Parochial School in Liebenthal, KS, and graduated from Schoenchen
High School (KS) as the salutatorian. A dedicated homemaker, she also played a
vital role in the family business, Dreher’s Tank Service in Plainville, where
she worked as a bookkeeper and dispatcher for 35 years.

A devout
Catholic, Mary was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Plainville, the Sacred Heart Guild, and the Daughters of Isabella. She served
as Recording Secretary for the Daughters of Isabella for 25 years and was proud
to receive her 60-year service pin in 2021.

Mary loved
her family dearly and cherished the times she could spend with them. She had
many interests including traveling, playing cards, Scrabble, bingo, dominoes,
crossword puzzles, cooking, reading, and crocheting. She particularly enjoyed
her visits from family and friends and corresponding through old fashioned
letter writing. She really enjoyed getting to know new people.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville, with burial following at Sacred
Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025,
from 6:00-8:00 PM, with a vigil and rosary at 7:00 PM, all at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church.

Mary Catherine (Herrman) Dreher

Larry Elvin Mravinec, 94, of Russell, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at the Wilson Care Center in Wilson, Kansas.

Larry was born in Osborne County, Kansas, the son of Frank P. and Ruby V. (Boyd) Mravinec.  Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for many years.  A dedicated veteran, he was a lifelong member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, honoring and supporting fellow servicemen and women throughout his life.

Larry was married to the love of his life, Lieselotte “Lisa” (Muller) Mravinec, for 42 years.  Their life together was full of love, laughter, and unwavering support for their blended family.

Larry spent over 40 years in the auto body repair business and was long-time owner of Larry’s Body Shop where he was known for his skill, work ethic and pride in a job well done.  In his free time, Larry enjoyed traveling and reading; passions that reflected his curiosity, thoughtfulness, and appreciation for life’s journey.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mamie Huxman; and two sons, Larry Marvinec, Jr. and Brett Marvinec.

Larry is survived by his wife Lisa of the home; sons, Bart Mravinec (Denise) of Russell, Kansas, Michael Moore (Mariann) of Shawnee, Kansas, Timothy Moore (Cheri) of Yukon, Oklahoma and Andrew Moore (Kimberly) of McKinney, Texas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride.

He leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, kindness, and deep devotion to his family.  He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 21, 2025 at the Russell City Cemetery where the Russell VFW Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Larry Elvin Mravinec

Robert Aaron Thacker, (Bob) 73, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Robert was born on January 30, 1952, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Elmer and Ethel (Reichard) Thacker. He grew up in Paradise, Kansas, and graduated from Luray High School in the class of 1970.  He was united in marriage to Janet Lynn Baral on April 19, 1971, in Hays, Kansas. Together, they were blessed with three children—son Schon and twin daughters Tavi and Chastity. Over the years, the family lived in the Texas Panhandle and Lawrence, Kansas, before settling back in Russell. Janet preceded him in death on December 19, 2009. Robert found love a second time and married Donna Harmon on September 23, 2010.

Born a farm boy, Robert carried those roots of grit and determination into his adult life. He built a long career as a highly respected and sought-after truck driver, working both in the oilfield and over the road. Known for his intelligence, intuition, and steady hand behind the wheel, he earned admiration from everyone who worked alongside him.  Robert loved Bud Light, the Kansas City Chiefs, Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, shooting guns, music, (especially hearing his son Schon play guitar), and most importantly his FAMILY! He was witty and quick with a comeback, never met a stranger, and had a gift with words. A master storyteller, he could spin a tale so vivid you felt like you were right there with him. When words weren’t spoken, he often put pen to paper, writing poetry that revealed the depth of his heart. His stories, his humor, and his way with words will forever be remembered by those who loved him.

Surviving family include his wife Donna, of Russell, Kansas; son Schon Thacker and wife Mandi of Overland Park, Kansas; twin daughters Tavi Collins and husband Jason of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Chastity Thacker and significant other Dustin Stiles of Russell, Kansas; sister-in-law Linda Harmon Gibbs of Russell, Kansas; and seven grandchildren: Kavion, Kerriana, Abrielle, Elijah, Bailee, Chevelle, and Aaron.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Janet, his parents and two sisters, Lona Weger and Gloria Becker.

In true Thacker fashion, Robert worked hard, loved fiercely, and always managed to have the last word!

Cremation has been selected by the family.  A visitation to celebrate Bob’s life will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.  Family will greet guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M.
