DeVane Awyn Cunningham, 96, of
Stockton, KS, passed away on May 19, 2025, at the Rooks County Health Center in
Plainville, KS. He was born on the family farm in rural Phillips County on
March 27, 1929, to Darrell and Maybelle (Dunlap) Cunningham.

DeVane began his education at
the nearby one-room schoolhouse, the same school his father had attended. He
later went on to Stockton High School, where he was affectionately known to
friends and cousins as “Shorty.” He graduated in 1947. It was during high
school that he met Doris Jean Buss, whom he married in 1948. Together they
raised three children: Denise, Jan, and Dana. Following Doris’s passing in
1997, DeVane married Ellen Rogers. They shared over twenty years together until
her passing in 2021.

DeVane was a carpenter by
trade and spent many years working for his father-in-law Earl Buss, building
and renovating homes in the Stockton area. Upon Earl’s retirement, he began his
own business. Over the course of his career, he built most of the new homes in
Stockton, until his retirement around age 70. His largest project was the Ralph
and Joanna Johnson home, where they spent nine months adding on to and
renovating the 1910 Italian Mansard-style house. His favorite home was the
Clifford Roy home, west of Stockton. He built his own home in 1951 and lived
there for 74 years, until February of this year.

DeVane was a member of the
United Methodist Church and was baptized there as an adult in the early 1970’s.
He served on several church boards over the years. In retirement, he
reluctantly allowed his name to be used as a write-in candidate for the City
Commission – only to receive more votes than any listed candidate. He served as
a City Councilman (1993-2003) as well as the Mayor of Stockton. Until recently,
he remained active on the Stockton Housing Authority Board.

During retirement, DeVane
enjoyed coffee time with his friends at the bowling alley, watching the Kansas City
Chiefs and Kansas State Wildcat football games, and most frequently, his TV was
tuned to Fox News.

DeVane was well-liked and
admired by all – young and old, men and women alike. Known especially for his
charm and wit, and in later years for his ever-present farmer overalls and walking
stick. Those who knew him well know he could talk endlessly about growing up on
the farm, the details and stories of generations of families who made up the
Bow Creek community. It was clear, at his core, he was always the farm boy from
Bow Creek, and that became the foundation underlying all the other hats he wore
in his life.

He was preceded in death by
his parents; wives, Doris and Ellen; and brother, Darrell Jr. 

He is survived by his brother,
Don (Jane) of Stockton; children, Denise (Allan) Edwards of Houston. TX, Jan
Cunningham of Stockton, and Dana ( JoLeen) of Hays, KS; five grandchildren: Joy
(Jeff) Bashus, J. Christian Smilanic, Amanda (Reid) Bullock, Rachel (Charles)
Carlson, and Aaron Cunningham; and five great-grandsons: Harrison, Callen, Asher,
Benson and Theodore. 

A funeral service will be held
on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 10AM at the funeral home in Stockton. Burial will
follow in the Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday with the
family receiving time 6 until 8PM at the funeral home.

Dorothy Mae (Huber) Herrman – Age
93, of Hays, Kansas passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the Good
Samaritan Society of Ellis.&nbsp;

&nbsp;She was born October 23, 1931, in Hays, Kansas to Otto and Caroline (Schafer)
Huber.&nbsp; She married Vernon “Vern” Herrman on May 10, 1951, in Hays.&nbsp;
He preceded her in death on January 27, 2016. 

Dorothy was a bookkeeper and office manager for Vern Herrman Motor Supply
working with her husband for many years.&nbsp; She was an AVON Cosmetic
Representative for many years and also worked for Bob’s Big Pencils. 

She grew up on the family farm one mile north of Ellis with her parents and
three sisters.&nbsp; She was a 1949 graduate of Ellis High School and the 1949
Homecoming Queen.

She
was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hays, and enjoyed boating,
camping, and fishing.&nbsp; She was an excellent trap shooter, and received
many awards for her talent.&nbsp; Her pride and joy was her family and spending
time with them.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, John Herrman and wife, Terri, Dardenne
Prairie, MO; David Herrman and wife, Deanna, Hays, KS; Ron Herrman and wife,
Cheryl, Russell, KS; Marc Herrman, Hays, KS; her sister, Phyllis Schuster,
Federal Heights, CO; her brothers-in-law, John Linton, Potomac, MD; Gary
Hindman, Salina, KS; her ten grandchildren; her twenty two great grandchildren;
and her three great great grandchildren.

&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Caroline Huber; her husband,
Vern Herrman; her daughter, Kathleen Schukman; her son-in-law, Kevin Schukman;
her in-laws, Raymond and Lucy (Steckline) Herrman, her brother-in-law, Hank

Alvin James Stenzel, 68, Hays, passed away Saturday, May 17,
2025 at HaysMed with his sisters by his side.

He was born October 20, 1956 in Ness City, Kansas, to
Clarence and Cyrilla (Meis) Stenzel.&nbsp; He
graduated from Ness City High School and attended Cowley County Community
College on a basketball scholarship.&nbsp;
Alvin lived in the Wichita area until moving to Hays twenty years ago to
be closer to family.&nbsp; He retired from
Hays Professional Fire Equipment.

Alvin is survived by two brothers, Duane (Dixie) Stenzel of
Archie, MO and Lyle (Bridget) Stenzel of Ness City, two sisters, Colleen
(Terry) Schniepp of Cottage Grove, MN and Brenda (Tony) Leiker of Hays, and
many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joanna
Stenzel-Kotz, one brother, Marvin and sister-in-law Donna Stenzel.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 20,
2025 in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ness City.&nbsp;

Shirley J. Smith

Lyle Lynn Luhman, 86, of rural
Natoma, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Parkview Care
Center in Osborne, Kansas

Lyle was born on October 25, 1938,
on the family farm north of Natoma. He was one of six children born to Henry
and Alvina (Tatkenhorst) Luhman. He grew up north of Natoma and graduated from
Natoma High School in the Class of 1956.

In accordance with his faith in
Jesus Christ, he received the gift of Holy Baptism on [Baptism Date] and
affirmed his baptismal vows through the Rite of Confirmation on [Confirmation
Date]. 

Lyle was united in marriage to
Betty Jo Tier on September 1, 1968, in Norton, Kansas. This union was blessed
with three children: Beth, Brian, and Lisa. They made their home on the family
farm where he grew up.

Lyle was a farmer and rancher
most all his life. He took great pride in his farming and taking care of his
livestock. In his spare time, he enjoyed being with family, especially his
grandchildren.

Lyle’s surviving family includes
his wife of 56 years, Betty Jo of the home; daughters, Beth Luhman of Kansas
City, Kansas and Lisa Gruhn (Frederick, Jr.) of Olathe, Kansas; son, Brian
Luhman (Charlotte) of Natoma, Kansas; sister, Brenda Price of Salina, Kansas;
and four grandchildren, Brianna Gough, Jack Gruhn, Emmett Gruhn, and Keith
Gruhn.

Lyle was preceded in death by his
parents; brothers, Merlin Luhman and Eldon Luhman; and sisters, Byrdene Mason
and Bonnie Schlesener.

The funeral service for Lyle will
be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Peace Lutheran Church of
Natoma. Burial will follow at the North Lutheran Cemetery. The family will be
present to greet friends on the morning of the service starting at 10:00 a.m. A
memorial has been established with Peace Lutheran Church. Contributions and

Nora Jean Hammerschmidt, 86, of Plainville, KS, passed away
surrounded by loved ones, on May 11, 2025, at the Rooks County Health Center in

She was born on December 5, 1938, in Hays, Kansas, to
Phillip Sr. and Ludwina (Dinkel) Rohr. Nora grew up in Hays and married the
love of her life, Ernest "Ernie" J. Hammerschmidt, on May 12, 1956.
Together, they built a life full of hard work and cherished memories, raising
six children: Roger, Gene, Cheryl, Marchelle, Ernie Jr., and Lenee.

Nora’s journey through life was marked by her dedication to
family and business. She began as a homemaker, then worked at H&amp;H Well
Service, Travenol and later in real estate, before joining her husband in
managing their business, Hammerschmidt Fishing Tools, from which she eventually
retired. She was a proud member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a devoted
member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Nora found joy in reading, coin
collecting, and investing in land, a reflection of her sharp mind and entrepreneurial
spirit.

Nora is survived by her children, Gene (Jung) Hammerschmidt
of Phoenix, AZ, Cheryl (Kent) Seirer of Russell, KS, Lenee (Ty) Horting of
Plainville, and Ernie Hammerschmidt Jr of Plainville; brother, Bernard Rohr of
Palm Springs, CA; sisters, Delores (Sheldon) Tripp of Edmond, OK, Lucille Smith
of Edmond, OK, Theresa (Richard) Coffenbow of Edmond, OK, and Carol (David)
King of Arvada, CO; four grandchildren, Julie (Tony) Markel, Karen (Luke)
Keller, Mykeltie (Jake) Schoenfeld, and Brylee Horting; and five great-grandchildren,
Kenna, Kimber, Chet, Brynn, and Sutton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and
Ludwina; husband, Ernie Hammerschmidt; son, Roger; infant daughter, Marchelle;
brothers, Marvin, Phillip Jr, LaVern Rohr, and infant brother, Ernest; and sisters,
Genavieve Rohr, Alfrieda Wiesner, Catherine Lane, Lorene Snow, and Anna
Wilcoxon.

Nora will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May
17, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial to follow
at the church cemetery in Plainville. Visitation will be at the church on
Friday, 6-8PM with a Vigil &amp; Rosary Service at 7PM.

Stephen D.
Cross, 81, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones
at the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home in Ivins, Utah, after a courageous battle
with cancer.

Born on August
25, 1943, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Dennis and Kathryn Carlson Cross, Steve
spent his early years in a small town where doors were rarely locked, and life
was simple and full of promise.

On August 20,
1966, he married the love of his life, Lillian A. Kober at the Saint Rose
Catholic Church in Great Bend, Kansas. Their love and partnership would span
nearly six decades, marked by shared devotion to family, faith, and service.

Steve attended
Saint Joseph Military Academy in Hays, Kansas and later earned admission to the
U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he excelled
academically and demonstrated strong leadership. Upon graduation, he trained as
a pilot in the KC-135 and was stationed at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico.
There he participated in three “Young Tiger” deployments, served as a flight
instructor for aspiring pilots, was active in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and
earned his MBA from Inter American University of Puerto Rico.

Steve later flew
the O-2 and B-52 aircraft, completing multiple missions in Southeast Asia and
earning numerous citations for his outstanding performance. He trained as an
aircraft accident investigator and also piloted the T-39, transporting generals
across the country. In 1978, Steve was medically retired as a Major from the
Air Force due to health challenges but continued to demonstrate resilience,
undergoing years of treatment and recovery. He then began a second successful
career in banking with First Interstate Bank in Southern California.

Steve approached
life with energy, curiosity and compassion. He was an avid stamp collector,
jogger, hiker, gardener, puzzle enthusiast, and skilled home chef who loved
preparing meals for his family and friends. While living in Redlands,
California, he was a dedicated Boy Scout Leader, teaching essential survival
skills and mentoring young scouts.

After retiring
to St. George, Utah, Steve and Lillian became active members of their parish,
dedicating over 30 years to church and community service. Steve managed the
Catholic Thrift Store, where he organized donations, coordinated volunteers,
and supported those in need with generosity and heart. He played a key role in
founding the Knights of Columbus chapters in St. George and Cedar City, holding
numerous officer positions. He was instrumental in fundraising and planning for
the construction of the Kuzy Church building, a project that earned him
national recognition.

Steve’s life was
a reflection of faith, service, and steadfast love – for his country, his
church, and above all his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived
by his beloved wife, Lillian; his sister Sue; his brother, David; his children:
Laura and Greg; and his many treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Kathryn; and two brothers:
Tom and Joe.

Steve’s remains
will be interred at the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California at a
later date.

Avon Smith, age 79, of Hays,
Kansas, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the DSNWK House in Victoria,
Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on June 25, 1945, in Wichita, Kansas.

He lived with his mother
until he was 13. He then lived in Parsons and Norton before moving to Hays in
1973.&nbsp; He became a resident in 1983, of Developmental Services of
Northwest Kansas and attended the Reed Development Center.

Avon loved playing music
for&nbsp;anyone and singing every Elvis and Old Rock song possible. His
favorite activity was playing in his band. Avon and the Catfish. His band would
play at multiple&nbsp;Hays establishments, including, Bijou/Chucks, Neighbars,
and The Brass Rail as well as every year at the Reed Center on his birthday and
any holidays parties.

He worked for Duane (Mini)
and Karla Fisher for many years at different establishments in Hays, including
his last job at Toby Jugs where he worked for 18 years.

In October of 2021 due to
Avon's declining&nbsp;health Avon moved to Victoria, another group home within
DSNWK.&nbsp; He entered into Hospice care in February 2025.

Avon is survived by his DSNWK
family and staff.

A Celebration of Life Service
will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 16, 2025, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays
with Revered Troy Miller officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in Saint Joseph

Darlene
Jean Kroeger, age 91, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, May 2, 2025, at Hays
Medical Center. She was born January 6, 1934, in Ellis, Kansas to John J. and
Katie (Lang) Augustine. Darlene graduated from Ellis High School and on August
21, 1954, she married Ernest “Ernie” Kroeger at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis.



Darlene was a co-owner of Ernie’s Pro Hardware in Hill City and while living in
Hill City she also worked for the USD 281 Board office. After moving to Hays,
she was an office manager at Alco and volunteered at the Community Assistance
Center. She enjoyed embroidery work, and volunteering as needed. Darlene and
Ernie especially enjoyed spending time together antiquing, attending Fort Hays
State University Basketball games which they were long time season ticket
holders as well as their trips to do mission work every year at St. Paul’s
Church in Crown Point, New Mexico. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra
Catholic Church in Hays, Daughters of Isabella and the Ladies Guild.



Darlene is survived by her husband, Ernie of Hays; three daughters, Lynette
Wasinger and husband Jerry of Hays, LouWayne Davidson and husband Rick of Hays
and Lori Newell and husband Galen of Wichita; two sisters, Sheila Fabrick of
Minnesota and Joyce Schmidt of Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren, Joel Wasinger
and Blake Wasinger and wife Teresa, Ben, Brett and Bryce Davidson, Chris Newell
and wife Kara and Nicole Mannion and husband Alex as well as her great
grandchildren, Maddison and Matthew Wasinger, Owen, Sadie, Kennedy and Hayden

Charles Philip 'Charlie' 'C.P.' Dunning, passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2025, in
Montgomery, Texas, at the age of 98. He was born on July 7, 1926, to Guy Orson
(d. May 6, 1963) and Bessie Ottalie (Adams) (d. January 19, 1933) in Webster,
Kansas. He was married to Patricia Tanko Meiers on August 18, 1985, in Las
Vegas until her death.

Charlie was
born and raised in Kansas and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy
during World War II, stationed in the Pacific arena. After the war, he returned
to his hometown of Stockton, Kansas, where he began his post-military career
working in the oil fields for Halliburton. 

In later years,
Charlie moved to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he became a familiar face at
Clatworthy’s, selling cars and making friends with customers for many years.
Known for his outgoing nature, Charlie had a way of striking up conversations
with just about anyone, whether he knew them or not.

Charlie had a
deep love for the outdoors. He was an avid horseman, boater and fisherman and
especially enjoyed trips to Flaming Gorge. Gardening and dining out were two of
his favorite pastimes, always accompanied by good company and good stories.

Eventually
settling in Keenesburg, Colorado, Charlie fulfilled a dream by owning and
operating his own restaurant, Charlie D’s. He and his beloved partner Pat
shared a passion for travel and explored the world together. They also spent
many winters as snowbirds in sunny Arizona.

Charlie was a
proud member of the Elks Lodge #1143 and the Fidelity Masonic Lodge #106 A.F
&amp; A.M. in Eureka, Kansas, where he formed lifelong friendships and gave
back to his community.

Charlie’s
warmth, humor, and welcoming spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Charlie is
survived by his seven children, Janet Batchelor, Colorado, Rebecca Oldemeyer,
Arkansas, Charles Dunning, Jr., Colorado, Bessie Gay Thomas, Oklahoma, Rusty
Dunning, Colorado, Joel Dunning, Arizona, Peggy Ryan, Texas; 10 grandchildren,
25 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. 

He was preceded
in death by his wife, Pat Meyers; siblings, Thelma Claudine Autenreith, Alberta
Mae, Guy Denzil and Atta Lee.

Charles Philip 'Charlie' 'C.P.' Dunning

Raymond Walter Stithem was born March 13, 1930, to Emma
(Buchholz) and Ike Stithem on the family farm northeast of WaKeeney. He was a
lifelong resident of Trego County and was a pillar of the community, serving
the farming and business people for over 75 years. It was, however, Ray’s
family that brought him the most joy. He was united in marriage to Bernice
(Billinger) on May 16, 1949, at St. Michael Church in Collyer, Kansas. Ray and
Bernice met at a Collyer Dance Hall dance and later got engaged at a Collyer
dance. Ray and Bernice raised six children in their family home. Over their 71
years of marriage, their family grew to include seven grandchildren, eight
great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, bringing them much joy.

Ray spent his life working hard to support his family. He
was always known for his ability to train and show horses and was a well-known
seller and buyer of horses and tack. He also passed his love of horses on to
his children, spending many hours at rodeos and horse shows around the region.
Ray was one of the founders and a longtime member of the WaKeeney Livestock
Commission. He conducted the weekly livestock auctions for decades, working

Fabrizius Auction Services. Ray was also one of the owners of the sale barn and
was known and respected by cattle buyers and sellers in several states. They
conducted land and farm auctions, business and equipment auctions, and
household estate sales in the region. He and Leon were known as the Deans of
Auctioneers in western Kansas. He started learning the business by working for
Harrison and Tyrel Auctions in 1958. He noted that Mr. Harrison was like a
father to him and taught him all about the business. Ray volunteered as an
auctioneer for 4-H and FFA livestock auctions for over 50 years. He was honored
with an Honorary FFA Membership for his many years of support.

Ray also had a mowing and snow removal business and took
great pride in being a dependable worker for all his business and home
customers. He continued to push snow and mow well into his 90s and never
stopped worrying about his clients. He was a familiar sight around town after
every snow.

Throughout his life, wherever there were horses, Ray could
be found. He was one of the founding members of the WaKeeney Polo Team, playing
on their field west of town on Old 40 or in Ralph Owens’ pasture. Other polo
team members were Don McKinley, Carl McKinley, Dwayne Zeman, Clarence Zeman,
and Al Claycamp among others. They played in a league with Hill City, Ness
City, Quinter, Gorham, and Hays.

Ray also enjoyed other activities with Bernice, but dancing
was always their favorite thing, along with playing cards with their friends.
They could be found cutting a rug at dance halls in Voda, Collyer, WaKeeney,
Ellis, and other towns. For their 50th wedding anniversary, Ray, Bernice, and
their children and grandchildren went on a cruise, and one of the highlights
was the dance contest for guests. Ray and Bernice outdanced every other couple
on that cruise to win the contest and the matching leather jackets that were
the first-place prize. They were in their 70s when they won the ship’s contest.

Ray and Bernice were also famous for the wonderful cinnamon
candy they made every year at Christmas. Every year, they made huge batches of
this hard, red candy and distributed them to their many friends around town. To
be blessed with the gift of their candy was a real treat every Christmas, and
it is a tradition carried on now by their family.

Ray was a lifelong member of Christ the King Catholic
Church, achieving the rank of 3rd Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus,
where he served faithfully for 70 years. Pushing snow for the church was always
a priority so people could attend mass even after the biggest snowstorms. He
was a good and faithful servant.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Kay
(Harry) Bennett, Gig Harber, WA; Diane (Dave) Gross, Manhattan, KS; (Tim)
Hager, WaKeeney, KS; Rhonda (Randy) Schademann, Lawrence, KS; Rob (Anna)
Stithem, Colby; and Terry (Mary) Stithem, WaKeeney, KS. &nbsp;He is also
survived by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-grandchild as well as a host of other family and friends

Ray Stithem was preceded in death by Bernice, his wife of 71
years, his daughter, Shirley Hager, his parents, and his sisters, Helen
Balluch, Margaret Feldt, and Ruth Niernberger.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 5:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th St., WaKeeney, with a
prayer of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil at 7:30 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday,
May 17, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 412 North 9th St.,
WaKeeney. Interment will follow at Christ the King Cemetery, WaKeeney.

(Buchholz) and Ike Stithem on the family farm northeast of WaKeeney. He was a
lifelong resident of Trego County and was a pillar of the community, serving
the farming and business people for over 75 years. It was, however, Ray’s
family that brought him the most joy. He was united in marriage to Bernice
(Billinger) on May 16, 1949, at St. Michael Church in Collyer, Kansas. Ray and
Bernice met at a Collyer Dance Hall dance and later got engaged at a Collyer
dance. Ray and Bernice raised six children in their family home. Over their 71
years of marriage, their family grew to include seven grandchildren, eight
great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, bringing them much joy.Ray spent his life working hard to support his family. He
was always known for his ability to train and show horses and was a well-known
seller and buyer of horses and tack. He also passed his love of horses on to
his children, spending many hours at rodeos and horse shows around the region.
Ray was one of the founders and a longtime member of the WaKeeney Livestock
Commission. He conducted the weekly livestock auctions for decades, working

Raymond W. Stithem

Connie Lynn (Fletcher) Powell was born on December 31, 1948
in Akron, Colorado. She died May 9, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas. Born to AJ and
Betty Jean (Hayes) Fletcher, Connie was raised on the family homestead southwest
of Akron, Colorado.

Connie graduated from Akron High School and attended Kansas
Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, where she met, and fell in love with, Denny
Powell. They married in 1968 and had two children, Debbie and Todd.

Connie began her career as a high school home economics
teacher in Salina, Kansas and Goodland, Kansas where she was also a real estate
agent. She later furthered her education, earning a Master’s Degree in Early
Childhood Special Education from Fort Hays State University. She was a
classroom teacher in Norton, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas and also served as a
district administrator, retiring from USD 259 (Wichita Public School District)
as the Director of Early Childhood Special Education.

Connie was passionate about the outdoors and was always up
for an adventure. From riding horses to water and snow skiing to cruising the
country in the Corvette she embraced every opportunity to celebrate life. Connie
spent many years riding shotgun as Denny’s navigator in SORC (Sandhills Open
Road Challenge) in Arnold, Nebraska. Connie and Denny made many lifelong
friends with whom they shared these travels down life’s highway.

Connie’s skills and interests were varied. She was an expert
seamstress and award-winning quilter, she played the dulcimer, learned how to
Western Dance, loved to sing and was an avid reader, consistently setting an
example for her children and grandchildren, demonstrating the value of
education and the importance of continuous learning. One of her greatest joys
was reading to her grandchildren, all of whom cherish the fond memories of
those special moments.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents AJ and Betty Jean
and brother Cliff Fletcher. She is survived by: Her husband of 57 years, Denny,
Wichita, Kansas;&nbsp; Her children, Debbie
Beam (Jared), Topeka, Kansas and Todd Powell (Trina), Hays, Kansas; Her grandchildren,
Stephanie Bender (Trae Johnson); Thomas Bender III (Reagan White); Teghan Beam;
Evan Powell; Eli Powell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Connie was diagnosed in 2021 with frontotemporal dementia,
which affects speech, mobility and executive function. Despite her diagnosis,
she continued to visit family and friends and won the hearts of her caregivers
with her kindness and quiet dignity, core qualities that the disease could
never hide.

Connie’s family will be forever grateful to her caregivers.

dedicated family man and a beacon of joy, departed this world on Saturday, May
10, 2025, at his home in St. Peters, Missouri, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 24, 1945, to
Joseph and Clara Stochl, and lived a life marked by laughter, generosity, and
an unwavering spirit.&nbsp; He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, June
Stochl, with whom he shared an enduring marriage of 61 years.

Frank’s warmth and humor were
unmatched.&nbsp; He was known for his hilarious personality and his infectious
smile, and those who knew him will forever cherish the sound of his
laughter.&nbsp; He took immense pride in celebrating the accomplishments of his
loved ones, often bragging with joy about his grandchildren, who brought him
endless happiness and pride.

Frank's interests and hobbies
reflected his vibrant personality.&nbsp; &nbsp;He loved the outdoors, spending
countless hours in his garden, nurturing both his flowers and his love for
nature. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and cherished watching
boxing matches.&nbsp; However, perhaps one of his most endearing passions was
his love for birds; he delighted in feeding them and would always go out of his
way to buy the finest birdseed, ensuring his feathered friends were well taken
care of.

Frank's compassionate nature
extended beyond his family.&nbsp; He was known to give generously, engaging in
charitable donations and making a positive impact in his community.&nbsp; His
kindness was exemplified by the stacks of mail he received from various
charities, each letter read thoughtfully as a reflection of his generous heart.

He is survived by his loving
family, who will hold onto the cherished memories of Frank, from his uproarious

Frank C. Stochl

Paul O. Schippers age 88, of
Victoria, Kansas, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born January 26, 1937, to John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers.&nbsp;
He married Theresa M. (Pfannenstiel) on October 22, 1962, in Hays,
Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on June 15, 2012.&nbsp; 

Paul spent his lifetime as a
farmer, stockman, and custom harvester.&nbsp; He grew up in Victoria and was a
1955 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp;
He was a member of The Basilica of Saint Fidelis and the 3rd Degree
Knights of Columbus, Victoria.

He served on the St. Fidelis
Parish Council, as a board member for the Victoria Farmers CO-OP Grocery Store,
as a councilman for the City of Victoria, and as a board member for the Farm
Service Agency.&nbsp; He enjoyed watching sports and his grandchildren’s games
and activities.

Paul is survived by his
children, Paula Schumacher, Topeka, KS; Troy Schippers and wife, Geralyn,
Victoria, KS; his grandchildren, Wade Schumacher (Ashley Wunder); Wyatt
Schumacher; Sara Weber (Grant); Emily Lang (Ethan); Gracyn Schippers; Claire

Victoria, Kansas, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Hays Medical Center.He was born January 26, 1937, to John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers.&nbsp;
He married Theresa M. (Pfannenstiel) on October 22, 1962, in Hays,
Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on June 15, 2012.&nbsp; Paul spent his lifetime as a
farmer, stockman, and custom harvester.&nbsp; He grew up in Victoria and was a
1955 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp;
He was a member of The Basilica of Saint Fidelis and the 3rd Degree
Knights of Columbus, Victoria.He served on the St. Fidelis
Parish Council, as a board member for the Victoria Farmers CO-OP Grocery Store,
as a councilman for the City of Victoria, and as a board member for the Farm
Service Agency.&nbsp; He enjoyed watching sports and his grandchildren’s games
and activities.Paul is survived by his
children, Paula Schumacher, Topeka, KS; Troy Schippers and wife, Geralyn,
Victoria, KS; his grandchildren, Wade Schumacher (Ashley Wunder); Wyatt
Schumacher; Sara Weber (Grant); Emily Lang (Ethan); Gracyn Schippers; Claire
Schippers; his great grandchildren, Cameron Weber and Elsie Lang; his sisters,

Marilyn Hazel Fulton, 90, passed away May
8, 2025 at Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park, KS.

She was
born October 31, 1934 in Larned; the daughter of John and Hazel Deets
Couchman.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident she
was a greenhouse associate at the Larned Greenhouse and also worked at Alco.

She was a
member of the Larned United Methodist Church, Job’s Daughters and Order of the
Eastern Star.&nbsp; Marilyn enjoyed gardening,
yardwork, construction, doing anything with flowers and crafts, cooking and
spending time with her family.

On April
3, 1960 she married Raymond Fulton in Larned, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away September 1, 2000.

Survivors
include; two daughters, Deana (Rob Kramer) Robben, Hays and Linda Dreiling,
Lawrence; four grandchildren, Haley (Brock) Johnson, Johnstown, Co, Joshua
(Brittany Crump) Dreiling, Baldwin City, Casey Robben, Hays and Nicholas
(Patience Dickerman) Dreiling, Hays; two step grandchildren, Kristonna Kramer,
Phoenix, AZ and Konner Kramer, Ellis; and two great grandchildren, Emmi and
Parker.

She was
preceded in death by; her husband Raymond and a brother Lorraine Couchman.

service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Larned Cemetery with Reverend

Marilyn Hazel Fulton

Edna Stecklein age 93, of Hays, Kansas passed
away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Via Christi Village Ridge Facility Assisted
Living in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born on April 19, 1932, to Peter
J. and Sophie (Dreiling) Rome.&nbsp; She married August C. Stecklein on
September 29, 1951, at Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on
November 19, 1992.

Edna was a homemaker, a mother, and a
grandma.&nbsp; She was a cashier at Wal-Mart, a&nbsp; member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays V.F.W.
Auxiliary Post #9076, Victoria Daughters of Isabella, and a longtime volunteer
at the Hays Community Assistance Center.&nbsp; She enjoyed bingo, gardening,
dancing, and in her earlier years she was an avid bowler at The Hays
Bowl.&nbsp; Her pride and joy was her family, and being a grandma. 

Edna is survived by her children, David
Stecklein and wife, Kim, Wichita, KS; Danny&nbsp;Stecklein and wife, Marla, Hays, KS; Sherri Dawson and
husband, Mark, Wichita, KS; her grandchildren, Sara High and husband, Joe; Andy

Edna Stecklein

Virginia Ann Ziegler, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded
by her family on May 7, 2025, at the Sheridan County Health Complex.

Virginia was born on September 22, 1942, in Southeast
Sheridan County, Kansas, to Jake Earl James and Melvina Goff James. She
attended Hoxie Public Schools and graduated from Sheridan Community High School
in 1960. On June 9, 1962, she married the love of her life, Virgil Ziegler, in
Hoxie. In January 1964, they moved to their farm outside of Park, Kansas, where
they raised their family and built a life together.

A lifelong learner, Virginia earned a Bachelor of Science
degree in Home Economics from Fort Hays State University in 1988, and later, a
Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition from Kansas State University. She
dedicated her professional life to the field of nutrition, first as the
Registered Dietitian at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter, Kansas, and
later as a consulting traveling dietitian serving numerous county hospitals and
facilities throughout northwest and southwest Kansas until her retirement in
2016. She served as President of the State Board of Dietitians and was honored
with various awards for her contributions to the profession.

Virginia found joy in music, especially playing the piano,
baking homemade goods for family and friends, traveling, and always seeking out
a good casino or the next winning lottery scratcher.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Virgil of Park; her
three children: Kevin Ziegler of Elkins, AR; Cynthia (Rob) Bieberle of Colby,
KS; and Patti (Shay) Ziegler of Phoenix, AZ. She also leaves behind three
beloved grandchildren: Anna Ziegler, Zell (Alysha) Bieberle, and Tayler (Mason)
Wright; and one cherished great-grandchild, Quinn Bieberle.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, four
brothers—Jake E. Jr., Marvin, Darwin “Dale,” and Don—and her sister, Charlotte.

Visitation will be held at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in
Hoxie, Kansas, on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM&nbsp; and
family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A graveside service will be
held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at St. Frances Cabrini Cemetery,
Hoxie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the

She was born December 11, 1953 in Hays, the daughter of
Julius and Mary Rose (Dreher) Legleiter.&nbsp;
She graduated from Marian High School in 1972 and earned Hotel-Motel
Management certification from LaSalle University.&nbsp; She greatly enjoyed working in the
hospitality industry and excelled in it.&nbsp;
She loved serving people and working side-by-side with her family for 35
years at Midway Motel, and then working as a desk clerk at Hays Super8 for 15
years, retiring in 2022.&nbsp; Margie also
took on the daunting task of being a caregiver for two brothers with special
needs, especially after her father’s passing.&nbsp;
She enjoyed short road trips, her convertible car, an occasional glass
of wine, and generously helping anyone in need.&nbsp;
Margie possessed a deeply devout Catholic faith, was a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, regularly watched EWTN, and was
godmother to many nieces.&nbsp; Margie’s list
of accomplishments in life were endless, her shoes will never be filled, and
