The Environmental Protection Agency has required each state to update their certification and training plans, which outline private and commercial pesticide certification in the state. With this, producers that have a pesticide license need to be aware of some upcoming changes to the private applicator certification and testing that is conducted, especially at the Extension office. In order to meet these objectives, the Kansas Department of Agriculture introduced house bill 2607, which was approved by the legislature making some changes to the private applicator certification.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025 there will be three options for applicators to receive certification. These include:

· Closed-book examination (We will still offer this option at the Extension Office)

· Attend an in-person training to obtain certification

· Complete an online training that will be released

The new options to be able to get a private pesticide certification will also be the way for a producer to recertify.

If you are someone that may have been putting off getting your certification, or if you are able to renew, you may want to get certified before the end of the year. The Extension office has a limited amount of books on private pesticides for loan so that you can study and then come take the test. We will also be working on an in-person training in the coming year if you do not complete the test before the regulations change.

BOOR: Pesticide rule change

Millions of Americans fall each year, and one’s&nbsp;fall risk increases
dramatically during the winter. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause
of fatal injury and non-fatal trauma. In fact, every 19 minutes an older adult
dies from a fall. Further, falls have a substantial financial toll and
collectively cost over $50 billion annually. Here are 5 tips for preventing
slips, trips, and falls.

No matter the
weather, we should always strive to wear proper footwear. Specifically, shoes that
support your foot appropriately, have a firm sole, and have&nbsp;good traction.
Traction is especially important during the winter months as&nbsp;you never&nbsp;know
when you will encounter ice, snow, or slush.&nbsp;Investing in&nbsp;a safe pair
of shoes can save you thousands of dollars in medical&nbsp;expenses that&nbsp;may
result from a fall.

Having your
vision regularly assessed is a crucial component of fall prevention.
Age-related eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, can affect your
ability to see clearly. Having an untreated condition can affect your ability
to walk safely, especially on slippery surfaces. Eye diseases are not the only
culprit, though. Of course, you always want to make sure that you are seeing as
clearly as possible. Make sure you go to the eye doctor at least once per year.

Have you ever
read the warning labels on your medicine bottle? Perhaps you should! One common
side effect of medication is dizziness or lightheadedness. These side effects
can also increase your risk of experiencing a fall. If you experience any of
these symptoms, talk to your doctor. There may be an alternative medication.

Regular check-ups – at least once every 12 months – is an important part of
fall prevention. Talk to your doctor about what might increase your risk of
falls, and discuss ways to address those issues.

that older adults who regularly exercise are less likely to experience a fall. Walk
around the block, practice Tai Chi or yoga, or lift weights. Any amount of
exercise is beneficial for overall health.

Be aware of
your risk of falling this winter, and acknowledge the changes you can make to
reduce your risk all year round.

Technical writing courses equip learners with the comprehensive skills to convey complex information clearly and concisely. The program features six 4-week modules, most of which are asynchronous. The topics include Simplified Technical English, Standard Technical English, fundamentals of technical writing, advanced technical writing, document design, technical editing and writing for oral communication.

The technical writing program is designed for participants to gain or perfect a skillset that will help them excel in a high-demand field.

Participants in the program must first complete either the Simplified Technical English course or the Standard Technical English course. They will be able to choose the order and pace in which they take the rest of the modules.

Instructing the courses for K-State Salina are Rick Cordes and Jessica Hylton, both of whom have extensive writing experience in industry. Cordes is an experienced manager of product training at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.l3harris.com/">L3Harris</a>, an American technology company; while Hylton holds a doctorate in creative writing from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is a published author. Hylton also instructs writing and English classes at K-State Salina.

"Technical writers are an integral part of a product's success," said Lisa Shappee, professor and director for the Center of Academic and Learning Innovation at K-State Salina. "The technical writing courses will help learners master essential writing techniques and build a pathway to an in-demand career. Offered through K-State Salina's professional education and outreach, we are committed to offering professional education and training that extend beyond the campus's academic offerings to upskill the residents of our state and region."

PHILLIPS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Monday in Phillips County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Buick Lucerne driven by Mary J. Biggs, 60, Logan, was westbound on K9 just east of W. 500 Road.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the car. It traveled into the north ditch and came to a rest in a creek.

EMS transported Biggs to the Phillips County Hospital. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

US crude production set a monthly record in August, and a government forecast predicts the year-end average will also be an all-time high. The Energy Information Administration confirms U.S. crude-oil production in the month of August averaged 13,401,000 barrels per day, the best monthly average ever. The previous record was set last December at 13.3 million barrels per day. A government forecast suggests we'll see record annual production of 13.2 million barrels per day by the end of this year. That would beat the record set last year by 300-thousand barrels a day. The United States became the world’s top crude oil producer in 2018, a position it has maintained each year since.

US weekly crude production has exceeded 13.5 million barrels a day just four times, all of them in the last two months. Operators almost did it again last week. The Energy Information Administration reports weekly production averaging 13,493,000 barrels a day, the fifth best tally ever. Cumulative production so far this year continues to set a record pace, rising nearly six percent over a year ago at just over 13.2 million barrels per day.

Drilling activity in The Sunflower State is down 13% from last year. But that stat is improving. Ongoing assessments from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service showed activity down 24% for all of last year. A month ago activity was down 17% year over year. Total well-bore footage drilled so far this year is down 21% statewide from the same period a year ago.

Adjusted totals from the Kansas Corporation Commission show 1,153 intent to drill notices through November of this year. That's down 135 from the tally at this time last year. &nbsp; The 110 Intents filed in November include two in Barton County, three in Ellis County, one in Russell County.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service is up seven percent from a week ago, but down nearly 12 percent from last month and 23% lower than last year at this time.&nbsp; This week's tally shows 11 active rigs east of Wichita, up one, and 19 in Western Kansas, also up one. Drilling was underway or about to begin Wednesday on leases in Barton and Russell counties.

Kansas regulators okayed 15 new drilling locations with nine west of Wichita and six in eastern Kansas. That's 1,071 new drilling permits so far this year, compared to 1,205 a year ago.

Independent Oil and Gas reports 31 well-completions for the week, 1,210 so far this year compared to over 15-hundred a year ago. There were 22 completions in eastern Kansas and nine west of Wichita.

The government reports commercial crude inventories dropped 1.8 million barrels to 428.4 million as of November 22nd. US stockpiles are about five percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

Refill efforts at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve save another $18 million for the US Treasury.&nbsp; The Energy Department reports an additional 1.2 million barrels added in the last week, at prices $15 cheaper than the sales prices two years ago. The total at the SPR is just over 390 million barrels, up 11% from a year ago.

Domestic petroleum product exports top imports by nearly five million barrels a day. But crude imports outpace exports by nearly 1.5 million. US refiners imported more than six million barrels of crude per day last week, down 1.6 million barrels from the previous week, but 200-thousand barrels a day more than a year ago. Four-week average crude imports are up 5.5 percent from a year ago. We exported 4.6 million barrels of crude per day, up nearly 300-thousand from last week but down slightly from a year ago. The four week average is down nearly a million barrels or 19 percent from last year.

Crude production in the number-three producing state rose by more than 20-thousand barrels a day from August to September. The latest report released by the North Dakota Department of Natural Resources shows output of just under 1.2 million barrels a day. Rig counts, completion tallies and permits were all slightly higher.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes last week was largely unchanged but did reflect a drop of two oil rigs and a gain of one seeking natural gas. The only state variance shown was in Wyoming which was down one rig.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News From the Oil Patch: Monthly output best ever

SHERMAN COUNTY — Three people were injured in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Monday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Hyundai Elantra driven by Charlene M.&nbsp;Meier, 76, Hoxie, was eastbound on Interstate 70 two miles west of Goodland following a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by&nbsp;Carlos D&nbsp;Salgado-Palma, 34, St. Louis, Missouri.

A road worker allegedly threw an orange cone into the driving lane. The Toyota made evasive maneuver to avoid from striking the cone, swerved to the right and came to complete stop. The Hyundai struck the Toyota.

EMS transported&nbsp;Meier and&nbsp; two passengers in the Toyota Ana I. Herrera Sarantes, 31, and an 8-year-old girl, both of St. Louis to Goodland Regional Health Center. Salgado-Palma and a 1-year-old in the Toyota were not injured. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

The Counseling Connection offers affordable same-day therapy for mental health challenges in Hays, supported by student interns.

Counseling Connection, established in 2021, is a mental health service provider in Hays, 2703 Hall St., Suite 13.

The clinic's owners are three licensed therapists, Deanna Rupp, Tess Bennett, and Michelle Fairbank, who said providing affordable care for those in need is important.

"Depression and anxiety are most common," Fairbank said. "Sometimes you need a little help when you're going through life challenges."

Walk-in sessions are available to anyone from 3 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays during the Fort Hays State University academic year.

The one-hour sessions are made possible through FHSU's counseling department and clinical social work program, with student interns providing services under supervision.

Fairbank said incorporating interns allows clients to access counseling more quickly, avoiding long wait times.

"The benefit of having interns available is sometimes when somebody asks for help, they want it right then and there," she said. "They wait two weeks to a month, and it's resolved itself."

Counseling Connection provides support for mental health challenges such as grief and loss, work-related stress, family dynamics, divorce and adjusting to a new community.

The $10 fee helps cover basic expenses like utilities and office supplies. Counseling Connection provides waivers funded by the Women Who Lead program for those unable to pay.

Counseling Connection provides telehealth sessions as an alternative for clients in rural areas who find traveling for in-person support challenging.

Fairbamk said the partnership between Counseling Connection and FHSU provides Hays with much-needed services while offering interns experience and training before entering the workforce.

"The interns are studying at the master's level," Fairbank said. "As soon as they graduate, they will apply for the license and become licensed therapists."

Counseling Connection will bring on two graduating interns as full-time therapists in May.

Counseling Connection interns are not employees but earn college credit while supporting individuals without health insurance, those with high deductibles, other students and minors accompanied by a parent.

Fairbank said many mental health clinics now have waiting lists, attributing this trend to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Mental health should be just as important as taking care of our physical health because it's all related and connected," she said.

The clinic is also considering offering group therapy for anxiety and depression if there is sufficient need or interest.

The Counseling Connection is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

A long-time campus tradition is coming up to celebrate the holiday season at&nbsp;Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;President Mason will kick this event off, followed by multiple speakers including this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, prior to the lighting of the tree.

The holiday tree-lighting ceremony will be in front of Sheridan Hall. The event&nbsp;is&nbsp;open to the public&nbsp;and will begin at&nbsp;5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. &nbsp;

A variety of activities will follow the tree lighting, including creating Christmas ornaments and mini-wreaths, carriage rides beginning at 5:30, and photos with Santa Claus. Visit Santa’s workshop to write letters to Santa, play games, and make Christmas crafts.&nbsp;

The event is sponsored by several FHSU offices: the Office of Student Engagement, the Office of the President, and International Student Services.&nbsp;

has officially opened sponsorship opportunities for the 2025 Wild West
Festival, scheduled for July 2–July 5, 2025, offering local businesses
and organizations the chance to support one of the region’s most beloved
events.

This annual festival brings
affordable, high-quality family entertainment to the citizens of Hays, Ellis
County, and the surrounding communities.

Julie Edgeman, newly elected
president of the Wild West Festival Committee, emphasized sponsors and
volunteers' critical role in the event's success.

 Wild West Festival announces sponsorship opportunities and new leadership for 2025

Holiday parties and big family meals may tempt us away from our healthy eating habits. Allow yourself to have your favorite foods but stick to smaller servings and balance them with healthier options.

Do you have several parties to attend? Plan ahead to help reduce those extra calories. Eat a small meal for breakfast with whole grains, fruit and protein. Don’t starve yourself thinking you’ll save room for party food. Take small bites and savor the delicious party foods. Go through the buffet once to reduce nibbling.

Staying active can help you keep a healthy weight during the holiday season. Look for opportunities to work physical activities into your holiday: Go for a stroll after a family meal, take a walk at the mall, or dance to your favorite holiday music. Aim to get at least 150 minutes a week of physical activity. For example, that could be at least 20 minutes a day or 30 minutes five days a week. It’s important to move more and sit less. Take simple steps to protect your family’s health when you prepare and serve holiday meals such as:

· Wash your hands and work surfaces before, during, and after preparing food, and before eating.

· Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separated during preparation.

· Cook food at the right internal temperature to kill harmful germs. Use a food thermometer to check.

· Refrigerate perishable foods, including leftovers, within two hours of buying or cooking.

When this outdoor column was born some twenty years ago, I swore it would always and only be about the outdoors; on rare occasions an outdoor topic or adventure from another state, but the outdoors non-the-less. My wife has often suggested I venture into other genres, but I have resisted. But now I find myself feeling the need to say some things that will deviate from the outdoors, and hoping that after almost twenty years, you readers will allow me this detour.

First and foremost, as a country and as a people we need God back in our lives. We have succeeded in pushing God out of our homes, our schools, our government and I fear He is barely welcome in some churches anymore. Now, don’t read into this more than I intend. I’m not blaming all the division and complete lack of common sense seen in our country today on God, suggesting He brought it on us or is allowing it to happen, although I believe that is a distinct possibility. What I am suggesting is that the only way for us as a nation to conquer all this turmoil is through a personal relationship with Jesus and by allowing God to be the God of the USA again. And by the way, without God there would be NO Kansas Outdoors to write about.

Secondly, we as a nation must regain a respect for authority. I see a tremendous lack of respect in our country for authority figures, parents, school teachers, coaches, work supervisors, law enforcement officers and even government officials and our president. Now I can hear the argument already “if those in authority respect me, I’ll respect them.” No, that’s not how this works. You can use that excuse with your siblings, your coworkers and maybe your friends, but not with those in authority over you. Yes, it’s wonderful to have authority figures who are kind, respectable themselves and also give us respect, but those in authority over us are due our respect even if it’s only for the position. Being a person of authority is not a popularity contest, nor are they there to be our best friend.

Thirdly, we as a people need to begin making decisions and forming opinions based on common sense, facts, science and the Bible. Today in our world, far too many decisions are made and opinions formed based on emotions alone. For example, I never dreamed I would see in my lifetime, not only support but actual promotion of the thinking that genders can be changed. Yes, there is a place for

emotions in the process of forming opinions, but factual information needs to be the driving force. Today’s media plays on our emotions and makes it terribly hard to stick to the facts. I can hardly stand to watch the commercials showing dogs that are skin and bones anchored to a tree with a log chain in a snowstorm. But the fact is that it’s EXTREMELY rare to find dogs like that; the vast majority of dogs in our nation are treated as well or better than some humans. But those pictures make the viewer tear-up and reach for their wallet to contribute to their cause. These tactics are used by organizations in all walks of life to get us to throw facts to the wind and go full-tilt ahead based on our emotions alone.

I don’t mean to make this all sound oversimplistic, and while changing the latter two would have a profound effect on the attitudes, demeaners and common-sense mindsets of us as United States citizens, it would probably do little to cease the wildfires or calm the hurricanes. But renewing or establishing a personal relationship with Jesus and making God the God of the USA again, will humble us before Him and invite Him to heal our land. Exploring Kansas Outdoors: In my humble opinion

Three little girls circled Kelly Groff on Wednesday, eagerly coloring Thanksgiving turkeys.

She spoke to them calmly with love and patience as they asked questions and showed off their multi-color squiggles.

For 24 years, Groff has cared for children in Hays. She has started caring for her three daughters, and now her in-home child care includes two of her grandchildren.

Groff, 43, of Hays was nominated as the November Child Care Champion by&nbsp;Michelle Wiesner.

"She has been a loving and caring provider for over 20 years,"&nbsp;Wiesner said. "She loves every child she has cared for, loves finding new crafts and creating new experiences for the kids. She loves what she does."

Kari Groff also nominated Kelly, saying, "She takes the extra step to make the kiddos feel at home."

Kelly Groff said, "I just love being with all of the kids. I don't know anything else, really. I love being with them. They love being with me."

Groff loves holidays and engages the children in craft activities that focus on giving back to the community.

The children and their families will give to the Toys for Tots program. The children also help Groff make cookies during the holidays. The plate of cookies is gifted to a family, who is encouraged also to make cookies and pass them on to someone else.

"We always say it's not what's under the tree, but who's around the tree," Groff said.

Groff said the children and families look forward to all of their giving experiences.

She talks with the children about what they are thankful for every morning through November.

"My philosophy is to be kind and humble," she said.

The Groffs love Halloween, and not only do the children who are currently in her child care come trick or treating, but so do children who she has cared for in the past.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the family's 13-foot skeleton still loomed in the yard across from blow-up Christmas decorations already greeting the kids for the next holiday.

Groff said she stays close to many of the children in her child care in the past, some of whom are now teenagers or even in college.

"It's so great to see how well they are doing in life," she said.

When the weather is nicer, Groff likes to take the children for walks and allows them to play outside.

"Every child needs to be outside," she said. "That is what I preach the most is every child needs fresh air. Every child needs to burn energy."

Groff said one of the most challenging aspects of her job is raising the children from babies and then letting them go when they start school.

"You raise them for four years, and then they're gone," she said.

She said she has also seen challenges in the increasing number of regulations in-home child care providers face and decreasing demand for in-home child care as more child care centers open in the area.

Groff said patience is the key for anyone wanting to enter the child care profession. She said each child is different, and you never know what you're going to get.

"For me, it just comes naturally," she said. " I have always loved kids. I have always loved being around kids. I've always loved doing activities with kids. You have to have the knack for it, I guess.

"It definitely takes time and patience, and it's a learning experience."

"She loves every child she has cared for, loves finding new crafts and creating new experiences for the kids. The plate of cookies is gifted to a family, who is encouraged also to make cookies and pass them on to someone else."We always say it's not what's under the tree, but who's around the tree," Groff said.Groff said the children and families look forward to all of their giving experiences.She talks with the children about what they are thankful for every morning through November."My philosophy is to be kind and humble," she said.The Groffs love Halloween, and not only do the children who are currently in her child care come trick or treating, but so do children who she has cared for in the past.On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the family's 13-foot skeleton still loomed in the yard across from blow-up Christmas decorations already greeting the kids for the next holiday.Groff said she stays close to many of the children in her child care in the past, some of whom are now teenagers or even in college."It's so great to see how well they are doing in life," she said.When the weather is nicer, Groff likes to take the children for walks and allows them to play outside."Every child needs to be outside," she said. "That is what I preach the most is every child needs fresh air. Every child needs to burn energy."Groff said one of the most challenging aspects of her job is raising the children from babies and then letting them go when they start school."You raise them for four years, and then they're gone," she said.She said she has also seen challenges in the increasing number of regulations in-home child care providers face and decreasing demand for in-home child care as more child care centers open in the area.Groff said patience is the key for anyone wanting to enter the child care profession. She said each child is different, and you never know what you're going to get."For me, it just comes naturally," she said. " I have always loved kids. I have always loved being around kids. I've always loved doing activities with kids. <a href="https://kansasreflector.com/author/akaminski/"></a>TOPEKA — A lizard, a turtle and a fish are prospering in Kansas after spending years on the state’s threatened list.

A Nov. 21 proposal to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission recommended downgrading the classifications of the broadhead skink, the northern map turtle and the shoal chub from threatened to “species in need of conservation.” Researchers across the state have discovered significant increases in the three species’ known populations.

Jordan Hofmeier, ecological services director for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, said habitat conservation is the largest difference between the two classifications.

Under the needs conservation classification, the three species’ habitats no longer would be conserved, but they would remain protected from capture.

“If we have species on our list that are doing much better than they previously were, we don’t need to spend as much effort in conserving those as we do with some of the other species that are doing much more poorly,” Hofmeier said at a Nov. 21 commission meeting. “It’s a way that we can prioritize our efforts so we can focus on the species that need it the most.”

That’s because of strides in documentation and discovery.The population increases among each species are largely because of more thorough research. Expanded survey areas, greater consideration for habitat diversity and new methods allowed surveyors and experts to better understand the species, according to the proposal, which comes after more than a year of preparation.<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/BROADHEAD-SKINK" target="_blank">Broadhead skinks</a>&nbsp;are smooth and scaly lizards with yellow stripes along their heads and backs. They have been threatened since 1987 and are mostly found in the southwesternmost part of Kansas. They are fond of trees, especially mature oak, and recent studies have shown they also create habitats among dead logs and fallen trees.At the time of the broadhead skink’s threatened classification, there were only 15 known lizards. In 2015, researchers had identified 55, and by 2023 they had identified roughly 400.<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/NORTHERN-MAP-TURTLE" target="_blank">Northern map turtles</a>&nbsp;have short tails, rigid shells and small yellow dots behind each eye. They like to bask in the slow currents of creeks, rivers and lakes, especially in the creeks of eastern Kansas south of the Kansas River and east of the Flint Hills.The species was listed as threatened in 1993. At that time, surveyors found only 10 turtles using netting traps, but northern map turtles, among other species, have a reputation for acting wary of net traps. According to the wildlife and parks department, “Emporia State University researchers documented 100 individuals from 2017-2019,” using a combination of traps and telescopes.<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/All-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species/SHOAL-CHUB" target="_blank">Shoal chubs</a>&nbsp;are small, silver and black-speckled minnows with brief lifespans. On average, they grow to be no more than three inches and live less than a year. Once considered rare, shoal chubs like to live and spawn in larger rivers, including the Kansas and lower Republican rivers. They were classified as threatened in 2009 when surveyors identified about 1,000 shoal chubs.State survey crews recently found more than 7,000 shoal chubs.Endangered is the most at-risk classification under the Kansas Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1975. Species also can be classified under the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/Federal-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species-in-Kansas" target="_blank">federal</a>&nbsp;Endangered Species Act of 1973. Twenty-two animal species are on the state’s&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/Services/Threatened-and-Endangered-Wildlife/Kansas-Threatened-and-Endangered-Species-Statewide" target="_blank">list</a>. Most are fish or invertebrates like mussels and beetles.Nearly 30 species are on the state threatened list, and more than 80 are on the list of species in need of conservation. Endangered and threatened species receive the same protections, including habitat conservation and capture prohibitions.Warren Gfeller, a state wildlife and parks commissioner, wondered if the downlisting means the three species are at a heightened risk of becoming threatened again.There’s always a potential, Hofmeier said, but the species won’t be ignored if reclassified.“It gives us the ability to react a little bit better if they do become more imperiled in the future,” Hofmeier said. “But if we find that they’re continuing to do well, then they may get downlisted from species in need of conservation to totally unlisted.”Three other Kansas species were considered and ultimately rejected for listing changes. They were the black-tailed prairie dog, the coal skink and the greater prairie chicken. All are currently unlisted.
