Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported two active drilling rigs east of Wichita, up one, and eight in Western Kansas, which is up two on the week. Drilling is underway on one lease in Stafford County.&nbsp; Kansas regulators approved just six new drilling permits last week, one in the eastern half of the state, and one west of Wichita. Kansas operators completed 12 wells last week, five of them east of Wichita and seven in Western Kansas, including one in Stafford County.&nbsp; The government says oil and related product markets continue to be affected by efforts to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. But a new report from the Energy Information Administration shows that gasoline demand increased month-over-month in May as many states began to relax stay-at-home orders. EIA says demand for jet fuel plummeted for the third straight week, because of reduced commercial air travel. Jet fuel demand dropped by more than one million barrels per day from April to May, a 67% decrease, to reach its lowest level since 1968. Oil-by-rail shipments continue to lag behind last year's record pace, according to the Association of American Railroads. For the week ending August 1st, operators moved 10,070 tanker cars hauling petroleum, down more than seven percent on the week, and nearly 20% lower than a year ago. Monthly numbers from the AAR show total freight traffic in July was down more than 17% from a year earlier. They say coal and other energy-related rail commodities continue to struggle more than most. The world’s five largest oil companies slashed production rates and collectively cut the value of their assets by nearly $50 billion in the second quarter, as the coronavirus pandemic caused a drastic fall in fuel prices and demand. BP was the hardest hit, taking a $17 billion hit. The five majors also cut capital expenditures by a combined $25 billion.&nbsp; The Trump administration is seeking to ease a slew of Obama Administration rules for oil and gas drilling. One of the latest proposals could save energy companies more than $130 million over the next decade. But critics say that by relaxing requirements for measuring and reporting production on federal lands, the policy leaves open the possibility that taxpayers won't get their fair share of royalties. The proposal will be subject to public comment after being published in the federal register, which officials say has not been scheduled yet. The administration is also once again trying to get rid of rules for methane emissions in the oil patch. The Wall Street Journal reports the EPA wants to end requirements that producers have systems and procedures to detect methane leaks. Those new rules would apply to new wells and those drilled since 2016. They would also remove the largest pipelines, storage sites and other infrastructure from EPA emissions oversight. The administration has been trying to make such changes since 2017, but challenges from Congress and in the courts have, so far, stymied those efforts. The Energy Information Administration says U.S. inventories dropped 7.4 million barrels last week, and are now about 16% above the five-year average for this time of year. EIA reported a down-tick in U.S. crude-oil production, which dropped by more than 100,000 barrels per day to just over 11.3 million [["eleven point three million"]].Imports were up 900,000 barrels per day. EIA says the four-week average imports are about 18% less than the same four-week period last year. An appeals panel sided with the operators of the Dakota Access Pipeline, saying it's up to the Trump administration whether the pipe can continue to operate while a more robust environmental review is conducted. A judge in July ordered the pipeline shut down for the review, a move that rocked the industry. But the court of appeals is blocking that order until the Army Corps of Engineers can clarify in court whether the agency thinks the pipeline must shut down for the review.&nbsp; There's another pipeline shutdown in the headlines in North Dakota. This time, a federal agency says an oil pipeline is in fact "trespassing" on tribal land. The Bismarck Tribune reports an easement expired seven years ago. That easement allowed the Tesoro High Plains Pipeline to cross part of the Fort Berthold Reservation on its way to Marathon Petroleum's Mandan Refinery.&nbsp; The Bureau of Indian Affairs ordered the shutdown and is demanding $187 million in damages.&nbsp; Marathon has vowed to appeal the BIA’s order, which requires that the company “immediately cease and desist” using the segment deemed to be trespassing. The line remains operational according to an online statement.

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.huckboydinstitute.org/">Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development</a>&nbsp;will present Sen. Pat Roberts, Kansas, with a lifetime achievement award for service to rural America as part of the institute's celebration of its 30 years at Kansas State University.&nbsp; The institute will host a virtual event at 4 p.m., Aug. 19, to celebrate its April 1990 founding. The award will be presented virtually to Roberts at the event.&nbsp; "Sen. Roberts has been an outstanding advocate for rural citizens throughout his many years in Congress," said Shawna Moyer, chair of the board of directors of the Huck Boyd Institute. "He was a close friend to Huck Boyd, the rural leader for whom the institute is named. Sen. Roberts is retiring this year after 39 years in Congress. We are pleased to honor him in this way." Roberts is expected to make remarks via Zoom from Washington, D.C. Ellis County will conduct a budget hearing at 5:15 p.m. Monday at the Ellis County Administrative Center.

The proposed budget keeps the mill levy flat at&nbsp;36.910 mills. The proposed budget is&nbsp; $26,557,396. This is compared to actual expenditures of $25,862,533 for 2019.

The board in its regular meeting will consider bids for bonds for road and bridge work.

The board is also set to consider replacing an existing stop sign with a yield sign in the 2300 block of Saline River Road and adding a yield sign at the opposite end of the road triangle.

Ellis County Commission to consider budget with flat tax rate

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for Ellis&nbsp;Co RWD 1C.&nbsp;The advisory was issued&nbsp;because of distribution maintenance, resulting in&nbsp;a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from&nbsp;Ellis&nbsp;Co RWD 1C&nbsp;indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Christian women’s group cancels meetings through 2020

Although delayed by COVID-19, the newest store is now open on the bricks, <a href="https://homeelementshays.com/">Home Elements by Jenny</a>, 119 E. Eighth.

Owner Jennifer Schaffer has been refurbishing furniture for years, but after moving back to Hays with her husband, the Hays native decided to expand into a brick-and-mortar store.

Schaffer, 45, had been creating items for anniversaries and events for family and friends and her own home, but all out of her own home.

"For me, it was kind of a hobby and something to keep my mind busy, since I was a stay-at-home mom — something I enjoyed doing," she said.&nbsp;

Her oldest is 19 and her youngest, twins, are 12. She said she always wanted to have her own store, and she thought now was the time to do it.

"I wanted to share with other people the things that I could do," she said.

The store was set to open in the spring, but the COVID pandemic and subsequent shutdowns delayed the opening. Schaffer said she was not able to obtain some of the items she had ordered for her home decor showroom until recently.

Schaffer and her husband purchased the building in May and did some minor renovations to prepare the showroom.

"As I went around and shopped, because I'm from here, I said, 'I think there is something missing.' [I just wanted] to add something else," she said. "I really wanted to be downtown. That was a big part of it because I think downtown growing is a huge thing in Hays."

The building also has a classroom.&nbsp;Once social distancing rules are relaxed, Schaffer said she would like to offer furniture restoration classes as well as children's art classes in that space.

Home Elements by Jenny is carrying all sorts of item for the home, including furniture, accessories, pictures, lighting and the candle line, River Chic.

"I kind of look for antiques that are in bad shape and need to be freshened up — unique pieces," Schaffer said. "I will add a twist to them or texture and different kinds of resign pieces or artistic pieces. Everything I do I like to do a little bit different."

She also purchases new items from various manufacturers.

Schaffer said she likes all aspects of design, but leans toward shabby chic and more rustic pieces. She also has more traditional and farmhouse furnishings.

"What I try to do here in the store is to add a little bit of all worlds, so everyone has opportunity, because everyone has different taste," she said.

Schaffer carries a full line of Dixie Belle Paints, which are&nbsp;Chalk Mineral paints for DIY projects or professional painters. She also carries Jade Bloom Essential Oils for diffusers.

Schaffer is open by appointment. She is waiting to see what happens with COVID-19, but she said she hopes to open for regular hours later this fall.&nbsp;

"Now we are back here again, letting the younger ones be raised by their grandparents and their family. It is kind of neat being back in your hometown. We didn't ever expect that would happen. ... Now, we're super glad that we're here."

Jimmy raised his arms higher and higher, a smile spreading across his face, as he, the enchanted tree, grew larger and larger.

Jimmy was one of about 30 individuals with developmental disabilities who became stars this week as part of the Center Stage Theatre Camp.

The story of the enchanted tree is one of the scripts Center Stage participants practiced this week in anticipation of a performance recorded for broadcast on YouTube on Friday.&nbsp;

In addition to three simple scripts, the group also performed "Lean on Me" in American Sign Language.

This is the second year Annie Wasinger, 17, a senior at Thomas More Prep-Marian, directed the camp.

This year's camp looked a little different from last year. All the participants and volunteers wore face shields. Brightly-colored dots were placed on the stage to promote social distancing. Individuals who lived together or had regular contact were grouped together to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Wasinger said she thought this year's camp is probably more important for the campers because COVID-19 has resulted in the cancellation of other activities, such as Special Olympics, in which they usually participate.

"They had a lot of disappointments where a lot of those got canceled or postponed, so for me personally, I wanted it to happen in any kind of way," she said.

She said the camp allows individuals to have a creative outlet.

"I think the most important thing they gain is being able to interact with each other and that we can do that safely," she said. "Also so they can be creative.&nbsp;

"There are so many who come in and they are really timid and shy. Then they get on stage and they completely come out of their shell. You will talk to their providers later and their family and they will say, 'We've never seen so and so do anything like that. We didn't know he had it in him.' "

People realize they can be like the people they see on TV, she said.

"I think it is also really, really important for me and for them to be able to come somewhere and just be authentically themselves," she said. "It's a safe space where you can be anybody. I try to tell people that on the first day."

Wasinger has been a part of local theater since she premiered in her first Hays Community Theatre production at the tender age of 3. She also is active in her school's theater productions.

Wasinger's parents took on the care of a man with cerebral palsy before Annie was born. Joel, who Annie considers a brother, is now in his 3os. He was unable to participate in the camp this year, but she said she felt she has always had a special connection to individuals with disabilities.&nbsp;

"That was the inspiration for it. I thought he should be able to perform and have the same opportunities I had," she said.

Wasinger is using an online curriculum, 4th Wall Backstage, for the camp that is geared for individuals with disabilities. She has also mixed in games she learned at theater camps and a couple of activities of her own design.

The campers play one minute of fame during which they can sing or perform anything they want. 

They play pass the hat. They also play a game called build the machine. On Wednesday, each camper was a part of a car with an assigned sound and motion to represent their part.&nbsp;

As Wasinger's graduation approaches this spring, she said she is leaning toward entering a career in the sciences, but she thinks people with disabilities will always be a part of her life.

"I never really thought of it as a career, but more of a lifestyle," she said. "Wherever I go, I think I will always engage with people with disabilities, and I will always remain best buds with everyone who is in this room."

The camp was sponsored by Hays Community Theatre; Celebration Community Church, which provided the location; JBW Services; and&nbsp; &nbsp;Gone Logo Screen Printing, which provided discounted T-shirts.

Center Stage Theatre offers creative outlet for disabled campers

MANHATTAN – In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kansas State University’s Extension Master Gardener program is planning to offer a statewide online training option this fall for those wanting to join the popular group.&nbsp;

Cheryl Boyer, an associate professor in the Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources and interim coordinator of the state’s Master Gardener program, said weekly online sessions begin Sept. 3 and will run through Dec. 17.&nbsp;

The cost for online training is $45 plus any additional fees set by the county – or about $1 per hour of educational content, she said -- and can be paid at the local extension office. Some counties may offer an in-person or hybrid training option.&nbsp;

For online training, Kansans must sign up through&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/stateandareamaps.html">their local extension office</a>&nbsp;by August 28. More information about the program is&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners">available online</a>. Training sessions will be held each Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for 15 weeks.&nbsp;

“This online choice is optional and local units are not required to use this training in place of their own programming plans,” Boyer said. “However, because fall travel is limited for K-State Research and Extension educators, face-to-face training can not be expected or required.”&nbsp;

The K-State Research and Extension Master Gardener program is available to anyone with an interest in horticulture. “If you want to improve your gardening skills and knowledge, and you like to work with people, this program may be for you,” Boyer said.&nbsp;

The program is currently offered in&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners/mg-program-counties.html">more than half of Kansas’ counties</a>.&nbsp;

Once certified as an Extension Master Gardener, participants are asked to donate time in their community to help others learn more about gardening and horticulture. Boyer noted that in 2019, Extension Master Gardeners donated approximately 99,000 hours for a total value of more than $2.6 million.&nbsp;

This fall’s 15-week training schedule will provide up to 50 hours of training on 13 topics delivered by lecture and hands-on activities. Boyer said the topics include plant growth and development, soils, turfgrass, annual and perennial flowers, landscape maintenance, woody ornamentals, vegetable gardening, insects, pesticide safety, plant diseases, fruit, landscape design and wildlife management.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Twenty-month-old Kelton Wolf is known as one of the butterfly children.

He was born with a rare skin condition that makes his skin as delicate as a butterflies wings.

Kelton is unable to make a protein that helps keep skin together. Nicole Wolf, Kelton's mother, explained it's as if Kelton is missing the glue he needs for strong skin.

"It's called the worst disorder you've never heard of because it is very rare," Kelton's mother, Nicole Wolf, said.

Kelton's mother and father of Quinter both have a recessive gene for epidermolysis bullosa, which is also know as EB. Neither parent were aware they carried the gene. Neither family was aware of anyone in their families having the disorder.

Kelton's older sister, Adaline,&nbsp; 4, is healthy, but she also carries one of the recessive genes.

There is no cure for the disease. Kelton will have the disorder for the rest of his life. It will not likely get better, but get worse, his mother said.

Kelton's skin is so fragile even the rubbing of his clothes against his skin can cause sores and blisters. He wears clothes made of 100 percent cotton or silk, which is softer on his skin.

He wears dressings on his body, arms and legs to protect his fragile skin.

"If you see us in public, don't be afraid to ask," Nicole said. "I get a lot of looks. Normally [people ask], 'What happened?' 'Was he in a fire or a car crash?' I have also had a few who asked me what I did to him."

She said she would rather people ask so she can spread awareness of EB. About one in every 20,000 babies are born with the disorder. Kelton's disease is considered to be severe.

Kelton's condition also affects him internally. Some children who have EB have so many sores in their mouth, they can't eat. Kelton has also had issues with his throat tightening.&nbsp;

Kelton receives supplemental nutrition, because he can't keep up with the calories needed to heal his wounds.&nbsp;

Nicole started to cry softly as she talked about caring for her son.

"It's very hard on our family," she said. "Every day is a blessing for us because we never know that is going to be the day God calls him home."

Nicole said she knows that her son is in pain and struggles. He receives pain and anxiety medication during his regular dressing changes.

The family has been especially concerned since the emergence of COVID-19. Kelton's lungs and immune system have been compromised by the EB. COVID-19 could be fatal, Nicole said.

Nicole said her daughter has learned great compassion and gentleness in dealing with her younger brother.&nbsp;

"My daughter is amazing with him," she said. "You have to be super careful with him — kind of act like he is wrapped in Syran Wrap."

However, like delicate Monarch butterflies that fly hundreds of miles even with torn and battered wings, Kelton is also beating the odds.

Many children, who have EB never learn to walk, in part because of the wounds they develop on their feet.&nbsp;

Thanks to physical therapy, Kelton has learned to walk with the help of a walker.

"I am a very religious woman, so I thank God. We've prayed that he would be able to walk because we were told he probably wouldn't," Nicole said.

She also thanks Theraplay Learning Center in Hays, which has helped Kelton get to where he is today.

Despite his struggles, Nicole said Kelton is a happy little boy. Whether its eating ice cream, vanilla dripping off his chin, or feeling the soft feathers of a baby chick.&nbsp;

"If you ever meet Kelton, he is the happiest guy you will ever meet," his mother said. "He has bright blue eyes and a cute little smile. You would never guess what he goes through in a day."

Kelton has extensive medical bills. The Wolfs have insurance, but some costs are not covered, such as&nbsp; travel expenses to a special EB clinic in Denver every three months.

His family has organized a softball tournament and raffle to defray some of Kelton's medical costs.&nbsp;

The softball tournament, which is scheduled for&nbsp; 8 a.m. Aug. 29 in WaKeeney, has reached its 10-team limit for this year. However, organizers are taking donations for a raffle that will be conducted in conjunction with the tournament.&nbsp;

Kelton has a nonprofit bank account set up in his name for use for his medical expenses. Proceeds from the tournament and the raffle will go there. If money raised exceeds Kelton's needs, the Wolfs plan to make a gift to the EB clinic, where Kelton is treated, to help other families who have children with EB.

Neither family was aware of anyone in their families having the disorder.Kelton's older sister, Adaline,&nbsp; 4, is healthy, but she also carries one of the recessive genes.<figure>

 </figure>There is no cure for the disease. Kelton will have the disorder for the rest of his life. It will not likely get better, but get worse, his mother said.Kelton's skin is so fragile even the rubbing of his clothes against his skin can cause sores and blisters. He wears clothes made of 100 percent cotton or silk, which is softer on his skin.He wears dressings on his body, arms and legs to protect his fragile skin."If you see us in public, don't be afraid to ask," Nicole said. "I get a lot of looks. Normally [people ask], 'What happened?' 'Was he in a fire or a car crash?' I have also had a few who asked me what I did to him."She said she would rather people ask so she can spread awareness of EB. About one in every 20,000 babies are born with the disorder. Kelton's disease is considered to be severe.<figure>

 </figure>Kelton's condition also affects him internally. Some children who have EB have so many sores in their mouth, they can't eat. Kelton has also had issues with his throat tightening.&nbsp;Kelton receives supplemental nutrition, because he can't keep up with the calories needed to heal his wounds.&nbsp;Nicole started to cry softly as she talked about caring for her son."It's very hard on our family," she said. "Every day is a blessing for us because we never know that is going to be the day God calls him home."Nicole said she knows that her son is in pain and struggles. He receives pain and anxiety medication during his regular dressing changes.The family has been especially concerned since the emergence of COVID-19. Kelton's lungs and immune system have been compromised by the EB. COVID-19 could be fatal, Nicole said.Nicole said her daughter has learned great compassion and gentleness in dealing with her younger brother.&nbsp;"My daughter is amazing with him," she said. "You have to be super careful with him — kind of act like he is wrapped in Syran Wrap."<div><div id="fb-root"></div>

</div>However, like delicate Monarch butterflies that fly hundreds of miles even with torn and battered wings, Kelton is also beating the odds.Many children, who have EB never learn to walk, in part because of the wounds they develop on their feet.&nbsp;Thanks to physical therapy, Kelton has learned to walk with the help of a walker."I am a very religious woman, so I thank God. We've prayed that he would be able to walk because we were told he probably wouldn't," Nicole said.She also thanks Theraplay Learning Center in Hays, which has helped Kelton get to where he is today.Despite his struggles, Nicole said Kelton is a happy little boy. Whether its eating ice cream, vanilla dripping off his chin, or feeling the soft feathers of a baby chick.&nbsp;"If you ever meet Kelton, he is the happiest guy you will ever meet," his mother said. "He has bright blue eyes and a cute little smile. You would never guess what he goes through in a day."<figure>

 </figure>Kelton has extensive medical bills. The Wolfs have insurance, but some costs are not covered, such as&nbsp; travel expenses to a special EB clinic in Denver every three months.His family has organized a softball tournament and raffle to defray some of Kelton's medical costs.&nbsp;The softball tournament, which is scheduled for&nbsp; 8 a.m. Aug. 29 in WaKeeney, has reached its 10-team limit for this year. However, organizers are taking donations for a raffle that will be conducted in conjunction with the tournament.&nbsp;You can contact Nicole at 785-299-0096 or her sister, Tabby&nbsp;Ummel,&nbsp;785-731-1039. Both sisters are in Hays once a week and would be happy to pick up raffle items or donations.&nbsp;The raffle already includes coolers and Fort Hays State University corn hole boards. Those can also be found on the Facebook page.Kelton has a nonprofit bank account set up in his name for use for his medical expenses. Proceeds from the tournament and the raffle will go there. If money raised exceeds Kelton's needs, the Wolfs plan to make a gift to the EB clinic, where Kelton is treated, to help other families who have children with EB.

'Butterfly boy' beats the odds; family organizes fundraiser

The State Library of Kansas, located on the third floor of the Capitol Building, is an agency of the Governor’s Office and though we are one of the oldest library organizations in the state, it is sometimes difficult to inform and educate the public about our work. Not to let a great opportunity go to waste, the following is a very brief and partial overview of a few services we provide at no cost to you, our patron.

The State Library makes available to all residents an extremely wide range of resources for work, life, and leisure. These include research databases covering a multitude of topics and disciplines through magazine, periodical and news coverage, encyclopedia and critical analysis, video, photos, statistical data, activities, and games.&nbsp;

Our skill-building collection includes language learning (non-English and ESL courses), resume, career, and job-seeking skills, literacy and reading skills, business and computer training, parenting and family information, crafts and hobbies, real estate, self-help, pet training, and much more.

The collection of digital books, in audio and ebook formats, circulated over 680,000 titles last year, and in our continued effort to meet current demand, popular and literary fiction along with timely non-fiction titles are featured and added constantly.

Since most digital books circulate from reader to reader, one check out at time, just like books off the shelf, an individual account is necessary to request and check out a title. The Kansas Library eCard is not a traditional library card. Rather it is an account that lets readers borrow from any of our digital book providers.&nbsp;

The research and skill building collections generally don't have this requirement, so for most Kansans, they are available and usable right from our website. When this doesn't work (for Kansans traveling, attending school or in military service outside the state), the eCard also lets you take your library with you, by providing alternate access to the same online materials available in-state.

During this current time of isolation and difficulty, it should be recognized that some of our content partners like Encyclopedia Britannica, EBSCO and Tumblebooks are providing all Kansans with new and expanded book and research resources at no additional cost to the State Library.&nbsp;

Another service of the State Library is the Talking Books of Kansas. Just this month, Talking Books celebrated 50 years of providing personalized support and materials specific to Kansans who are blind, have physical impairments, or are otherwise print disabled. Accessible audio and braille reading materials are available via mail at no cost to the patron or by direct download, to all qualifying Kansas residents of any age.&nbsp;

Through the pandemic, our dedicated staff have continued to engage and work with our Talking Book patrons through daily phone and email contact, providing themed reading lists and quarterly phone book discussions, and facilitating a yearlong Youth Reading Club.

Public libraries across the state are staying engaged with their communities online through so many exciting and imaginative ways – interactive story times, book clubs, trivia nights, author talks, photography clubs, writing workshops, cooking classes, genealogy groups, just to name a few that I have seen on Facebook alone. For those of us in Shawnee County, I strongly encourage you to take advantage of all that the Topeka &amp; Shawnee County Public Library has to offer by visiting <a href="https://tscpl.org/events">https://tscpl.org/events</a>.&nbsp;

NORRIS: Kansas State Library a key resource — especially now

TONGANOXIE — Educators and administrators are getting ready for an unprecedented school year.

Witte is the new activities director at Tonganoxie High School. He 
also serves as a new assistant principal, taking over for Brandon 
Mellen, who stepped down to take on another job at an American academy 
in Peru.

Witte comes to THS from Jackson Heights, a Class 2A school near 
Holton. He was there three years and served as high school and middle 
school athletics director at Jackson Heights.

“There’s been no slowly getting the ball rolling,” Witte said of his new post. He started at THS on July 1.

Originally from Udall near Wichita, he eventually played football at 
Winfield High School and continued his football career at Fort Hays 
State University where he played as a wide receiver for the Tigers.

He got into coaching as a Rule 10 coach at LaCrosse while he finished up his degree at FHSU in 2008.

His first job was at Chisholm Trail Middle School in Newton.

After two years there, he taught in the Auburn-Washburn school 
district and then taught strength and conditioning and physical 
education at Mission Valley, also near Topeka. 

He served as head coach of football and track during his four years at MVHS.

From there it was on to Jackson Heights and the home of the Cobras.

Now he takes on his next challenge while navigating more situations with COVID-19 pandemic precautions and regulations.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has approved 
keeping the start of fall practices at Aug. 17. Competition schedules 
for some sports might be pushed back and other changes might be 
implemented, but the first day of practices is at least one constant 
right now.

“There’s been no slowly getting the ball rolling,” Witte said last 
week. “It’s not what you really want, but it has given us the ability to
 really get in and get going right off the bat.

“It’s that sense of urgency from Day 1 and really getting to work.”

Witte said there are many modifications the THS athletics department 
is working on to help minimize the risk of getting COVID-19. 

“We’re taking a lot of measures to keep doing everything as safely as possible with those changes,” Witte said.

There also will be fall sports parents meeting on Aug. 13, but those 
meetings will be conducted  virtually. Head coaches of fall sports — 
boys soccer cross country, football, girls golf and volleyball will lead
 those virtual meetings.

He noted that conversations also were taking place as far as what 
competition events might look like with fans and the various pandemic 
precautions, but those are still in the works. 

Like any planning during the pandemic, it’s a moving target.

“We’ve had no positive cases this summer and that’s allowed us to continue to have our workouts,” he said last week.

As for his philosophies as an activities director, Witte said it’s 
important to shape the students’ lives as best educators and 
administrators can.

“For me, I feel strongly that we as a school need to provide as many 
opportunities we can for our students to be successful,” he said, adding
 that includes helping develop good life skills for the rest of their 
lives and having the focus on both academics and activities.

He said he’s eager to interact with the many new faces at THS.

“I do enjoy getting to work with our coaches and student-athletes and
 being part of the experiences also of debate, band and choir and 
scholars bowl,” he said. “The list goes on.”

He and his wife, Rebecca, who is the public information officer with 
the Department of Corrections in Topeka, have two children: a son, 
Layton, who is 8, and daughter, Logan, who is 6.

FHSU alum with La Crosse ties takes reins as Tonganoxie AD
