DSNWK announced recently it was awarded a grant on behalf of the Kansas Children's Cabinet and Trust Fund in the amount of $11,553 that was approved through the CARES Act Technology for Families fund for support of families in DSNWK Kid-Link's Tiny-k program. The purpose of the grant is to ensure Kansas families, during the COVID-19 pandemic, have the connectivity supports and devices they need to access services.

Due to COVID-19, in-home early intervention services for families were limited due to the lack of&nbsp; necessary technology.&nbsp; Because services to these children are imperative, the need for telehealth has become the best option for families. &nbsp; 

The Tiny-k program is free to every child who qualifies, despite the family's resources.&nbsp; Thirty-eight children are currently being served in this program that are unable to connect virtually due to lack of equipment and/or connectivity. Having this kind of access to telehealth will also provide opportunities with their medical providers during the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

DSNWK partnered with&nbsp; Nex-Tech Wireless in providing the devices and connectivity needed to enable families to use telehealth services at a reduced price. DSNWK would like to thank Nex-Tech Wireless for their support.&nbsp;

DSNWK’s Kid-Link program covers six counties in rural north central Kansas to provide early intervention services to infants and toddlers from birth up to three years of age.

There are many unsung heroes on our Fort Hays State University campus. One group that fits this description is our admissions staff. On the surface, their jobs look like a lot of fun – meeting prospective Tigers and their families, sharing their love of FHSU, helping them complete all the right paperwork, and then welcoming each student to campus with great joy and enthusiasm. They get to dress in Fort Hays State gear EVERY day and connect with so many people in meaningful ways. They inspire and encourage the hearts of many who feel college is a big scary step. In a way, they are the big sisters and brothers of every on-campus student.

What we often fail to think about is exactly how complex, critical, and time-demanding their jobs are. Our staff really need to “be on” – and authentically on – all of the time. The position demands the ability to relate to diverse student populations and their family members while exhibiting a high level of enthusiasm and creativity.&nbsp;

However, they also need more than finely honed people skills. They manage a lot of paperwork and need to understand university policies and processes, not to mention how to navigate often overwhelming federal financial aid forms. They prioritize complex travel and event schedules, which often require extensive overnight, evening, and weekend work. After a long day of meeting students and their families, the administrative work begins. There are records to update, telephone calls to make, social media posts to draft, and relentless follow-up as each counselor continues to check-in with every student to ensure questions are answered and enthusiasm is built.

Two jobs on a college campus have built-in areas of accountability that are both data-driven and demanding. While it’s not only about the numbers for coaches and admissions staffers, coaches are evaluated on winning and admissions professionals must get students to become Tigers. At the end of the day, I know the desire to win is in the DNA of all of our coaches, and I know how much our admissions team cares about meeting institutional enrollment goals; it is, indeed, a heavy weight to bear for both.

Of course, student recruitment work requires a lot of support from the faculty who will teach and advise the new students, as well as from professional staff who will process financial aid and housing requests, help our new Tigers get acclimated to campus, and fulfill many other support service roles. These village-like efforts reinforce and supplement the work of the admissions staff. Our strong university-wide ethic of care also helps – a lot.&nbsp;

The pandemic has significantly changed how we interact with one another, and I got to wondering about its impact on the daily routines of our admissions staff. Like many of us, our admissions colleagues took to the Internet to communicate and develop strong personal relationships. Personal zoom sessions are becoming standard. Our admissions staff also attends virtual college fairs where they deliver short, powerful presentations to hundreds of students across the state simultaneously. To stand out in this media requires a whole different skill set.

Although some recruiters have placed their cars in park, the FHSU Tiger team is still making high school visits whenever they can. Our admissions staff don masks when visiting the schools and, not surprisingly, are thoughtful in adhering to social distancing measures, personal wellness checks, and sometimes temperature checks. In some cases, the in-class meetings have been replaced with socially distanced presentations in the high school gym – which demands our team to be even more creative and personable.

According to our admissions team, so far, we are experiencing larger crowds and more interest in FHSU. One creative high school counselor found our visit to be the perfect opportunity to gather the entire school, from freshmen to seniors, to listen to our presentation.&nbsp;

Jon Armstrong, director of admissions, shared that we have received great feedback from high school counselors. They are truly grateful that FHSU is willing to travel to them. It is a great time to demonstrate our resilience by doing everything we can to show up – even when it is difficult.

Another great example of that “can-do” attitude is how we have been able to accommodate students who are not able to visit campus. For example, when one student was unable to come to campus, our team created a virtual visit. This particular prospective Tiger was so impressed by everything FHSU had to offer that shortly after she participated in the virtual visit, her completed application arrived in our registrar’s office. The high school counselor also followed up, requesting an FHSU pennant and swag.

Other pandemic-related adjustments we’ve made include converting our larger Tiger Day and Tiger Mania fall and spring events into Tiger Days – which feature multiple campus events with a maximum of 45 guests. This will be more work for our admissions staff, but I know the moment one person steps on this campus, the staff will become so energized, and they will feel the extra effort was worth it. They are always so genuinely happy when parents and students share how thrilled they are to be able to visit the campus. And of course, positive energy feeds positive energy. So, I know the quality, personal attention each student and family receives will be exemplary.&nbsp;

Fall 2021 recruitment is even more challenging than fall 2020. I am so grateful for our hard-working admissions staff who always go the extra mile to make our prospective students and campus visitors always feel welcomed. Thank you, unsung heroes, for your positive, restless spirit. I know you love to promote the power of an FHSU education – no matter what it takes!

CAMPBELL: Control annual weeds with fall-applied herbicides

SCOTT COUNTY — Two people died in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Wednesday in Scott County.

A 2010 Chevy Silverado driven by Steven Craig Gruver, 60, Scott City, was southbound on U.S. 83 in front of a 2021 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Benjamin Keith Gilbert, 56, Jamestown, Kansas.

The Silverado initiated a left turn onto Scott County Road 30, entering into the north bound lane of U.S. Highway 83 directly into the path of a 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by Brian L. Lytle, 45, McCook, Nebraska.

The Peterbilt semi struck the Silverado causing it to rotate counterclockwise in a northwestern direction. 

The Freightliner then struck the Silverado.

Gruver and a passenger James D. Hickert, 37, Bird City, were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to&nbsp;Price &amp; Son's Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Gilbert and Lytle were not injured. The occupants of the Silverado and Lytle were not weariing seat belts, according to the KHP.

2 Kansas men dead after 3-vehicle semi crash

TREGO COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 9a.m. Wednesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Ford Truck driven by Justin L. Johnson, 24, Collyer, was westbound on Old Highway 40,&nbsp; one mile east of Collyer.

The truck left the roadway to the left, entered into the ditch, overturned and came to rest on its top.

President Donald Trump delivered a decisive Election Day victory among Ellis County voters in the midst of capturing Kansas' six electoral votes.

According to the Kansas Secretary of State's Office, Trump lost only five Kansas counties Tuesday — three in the Kansas City/Topeka area and Riley County.

In Ellis County, Trump and GOP running mate Mike Pence captured 9,423 votes, while challenger Joe Biden and Kamala Harris received 3,554 votes for the Democratic ticket.

The Libertarian ticket earned just 295 votes, and there were 51 write-in votes cast.

State races showed a similar split, with Republican Roger Marshall gathering 8,999 votes against Democrat Barbara Bollier's 3,715 votes.

In the battle for the Big First U.S. House seat, Ellis County again voted overwhelmingly Republican, with Tracy Mann receiving 9,375 votes against Democrat Kali Barnett's 3,658 votes.

The Ellis County Health Department on Wednesday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days increased again from 12 on Monday to 13 on Wednesday.

On Oct. 2, the Hays City Commission voted to extend the ordinance requiring face coverings until the seven-day new case average was five or fewer for 14 straight days.

There were 29 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Monday. There are currently 122 active cases of coronavirus, including five active hospitalizations, and 1,368 recovered cases.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests jumped from 21.7 percent on Monday to 26.3 percent on Wednesday.

Since reporting began, there have been 1,508 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 18 deaths.

Of the total 10,770 tests administered, 13.1 percent have returned positive for coronavirus.

NOTE:&nbsp;"New cases" reflects cases reported by the Ellis County Health Department between regular reporting periods of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. "Total cases" reflects all cases reported by the department. Clinton Wade McElroy, 49, Ellis, has been charged with one count of producing child pornography and one count of committing a crime involving a minor child while registered as a sex offender, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Stephan McAllister. The crimes are alleged to have occurred May 27 through June 23 in Ellis.

In 2017, he was convicted in Ellis County District Court of sexually exploiting a 14-year-old victim. He is registered on the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nsopw.gov/">https://www.nsopw.gov/</a>&nbsp;.

If convicted, McElroy could face a penalty of not less than 15 years and not more than 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on the production charge, and up to 10 years (consecutive) on the other count. The FBI investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart is prosecuting.

HaysMed acute care nurse named Daily Award winner

The Hays Police Department had an eventful night Saturday, with a handful of arrests being made, and numerous calls for more minor crimes.

"Halloween was a busy night," said Hays Police Department chief Don Scheibler.

During one incident, HPD officers took into custody a naked Hays man following an alleged assault.

At around 1:24 a.m. on Nov. 1, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Ash following a report of a physical disturbance, Scheibler said.

The reporting party told police that a fight between a man and a woman was occurring, with the woman screaming "Let me go," he said.

When officers arrived, the man was located and was smeared with blood, Scheibler said.

He was also reported to be completely naked.

The suspect, later identified as&nbsp;Dustin Jay Kraft, 34, then attempted to flee on foot, as officers pursued.

He continued to resist, and officers deployed a taser, but the suspect continued to assault officers while also making threats upon the life of the officer, Scheibler said.

Officers would eventually detain Kraft under suspicion of domestic battery, criminal threat against a law enforcement officer, criminal threat, drug possession and drug paraphernalia.

Kraft has previous convictions including drug possession in Ellis County from an incident in 2017, as well as convictions for battery and obstructing a legal process in Norton County from an incident in 2019.

During an unrelated incident at a local bar the night of Halloween, a man described to be wearing a "shimmering gold mermaid outfit" was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct after refusing to leave a bar in downtown Hays, Scheibler said.

And another incident led to an individual being arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and drug possession.

Between 2:30 a.m. and 2:40 a.m., a victim reported walking west on the 200 block of West 10th and being struck in the back of the head, which caused him to fall, Scheibler said.

He also reported being kicked in the face by the suspect and lost consciousness.

Following that incident, Cody Lohrding, 20, Hays, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and drug possession.

Hays man arrested after alleged naked attack on busy Halloween night

WASHINGTON — Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue recently designated Rawlins County as a primary natural disaster area. Producers who suffered losses caused by recent drought may be eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency emergency loans.

This natural disaster designation allows FSA to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts.

Producers in the contiguous counties below are also eligible to apply for emergency loans:

Kansas: Cheyenne, Decatur, Sherman and Thomas Nebraska: Dundy, Hitchcock and Red Willow

The deadline to apply for these emergency loans is June 15.

FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.

FSA has a variety of additional programs to help farmers recover from the impacts of this disaster. FSA programs that do not require a disaster declaration include: Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program; Emergency Conservation Program; Livestock Forage Disaster Program; Livestock Indemnity Program; Operating and Farm Ownership Loans; and the Tree Assistance Program.

Drought leads to natural disaster designation in NW Kan. counties

TOPEKA —Republican Tracey Mann will be the next congressman in Kansas’ 1st District, with The Associated Press calling the race at 9:25 p.m. By midnight, Mann was up 70.7% to Democrat Kali Barnett's 29.3%.

Mann, who lives in Salina, campaigned on removing coronavirus restrictions to boost the country’s struggling economy. He also said he would vote for a stimulus package that is limited and targets only specific industries.

The former lieutenant governor also wants to change the U.S.’ immigration system to help bring more workers to western Kansas but said that border control must be addressed first.

Mann said Republican congressional leaders have promised him a spot on the House Agriculture Committee.

“I want to roll up my sleeves and go to work to advocate for our farmers and ranchers in Washington,” Mann said. “It’s such a big economic impact for the Big First.”

The former real estate manager said his experience on his family farm and the knowledge he developed of agriculture as the lieutenant governor gave him the edge.

“The voters were trying to find someone who had that experience and background who was willing to go to Washington and stand up for us — and also for our basic, conservative Kansas values as well.”

The Big First came open when current U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall decided to run for Senate. Marshall has represented the 1st District since 2017.

Barnett, a Garden City music teacher, received about 32% of the vote.

The Noyce Teacher-Leader Program at Fort Hays State University offers a $14,000 renewable scholarship to juniors and seniors preparing to become a science or math teacher.

But the program through the National Science Foundation (NSF) is more than just a scholarship. Recipients of the Noyce Teacher-Leader awards engage in specialized coursework and enroll in a seminar program designed to help them learn how to teach in rural school districts. In addition to preparation for teaching, additional resources are provided to support undergraduate research experiences and travel to conferences.

The scholarship, for juniors and seniors only, can be renewed for a second year. For each year they receive the scholarship, Noyce graduates agree to teach in a high-needs school district for two years. The new teachers also continue to receive support the first three years in their school district through an online mentoring program.

FHSU applied to the NSF for a five-year grant in 2011and received $1.2 million for scholarships that began being awarded in 2012. The NSF awarded Fort Hays State an additional year of funding in 2018, and the school was encouraged to apply again. FHSU is now in its third year of a five-year, $1.45 million grant that will run through 2023.

Dr. Paul Adams, dean of the College of Education and professor of education and professor of physics at FHSU, calls Noyce “the Super Bowl of scholarships.”

“The NSF wants to support institutions that are committed to preparing the best science and mathematics teachers who can then can go on to become leaders in their communities and make a difference in these high-need communities,” he said.

After participating in the Teacher-Leader program the past two years, Seth Boxberger and Cayla Steinert said they feel prepared to take over a classroom of their own.

“This has definitely given me a jumpstart to my career,” said Boxberger, a math education major. “As a teacher in the STEM education field, you are likely going to be involved with a number of departments in your school. This program helped me come out of my shell and get involved with a lot of people. Not only did the scholarship help pay for my education, I got a lot more in-depth experience than I would have in the regular teacher education program.”

Boxberger grew up in Russell, where his mom, Kim, is a long-time kindergarten teacher.&nbsp;His hesitation in pursuing the same career as his mom vanished when, while transferring from Kansas State University to FHSU, he heard about the Noyce scholarship.

He treasured the experiences that a smaller school district provided him as a student and welcomes the opportunity to offer the same experience to his future students.

“I was able to be very involved and knew all my teachers and coaches in high school,” Boxberger said. “We were able to build relationships that students in larger schools might not be able to. Our discussions in Noyce seminar help us realize the importance of those aspects of education."

Steinert – a biology education major from Olmitz, a small town in Barton County – also is a transfer student and was able to take advantage of a partnership that FHSU has with five western Kansas community colleges through the Noyce Scholarship Program.

Steinert, a graduate of Garden City Community College, was the first transfer student to become a Noyce scholar through the community college partnership.&nbsp;

Now, she looks forward to teaching students in a rural district similar to the one she attended at Otis-Bison, which includes students from Otis, Bison, Olmitz, Albert, and Timken.&nbsp;

“I graduated in a class of 17, so I knew my classmates very well,” she said. “It was a great family dynamic, and we were able to be involved in so many activities.”

Steinert stressed that a benefit of teaching in a rural program is the chance to stay connected to students well as they progress through their K-12 experience.

“When you see them every year, you can form better relationships with your students,” she said. “That creates a more welcoming environment for learning.”

To date, 54 Fort Hays State students in the Noyce Teacher-Leader Program have received the scholarship. All but three of those (who dropped out because they changed their majors) are either still teaching, student teaching or attending school.

Students have until Dec. 1 to apply for a spring 2021 award. Those interested in starting in the fall of 2021 have until Feb. 15, 2021, to apply. Students with junior level status (45 credit hours) by the spring semester are eligible to apply. Not only did the scholarship help pay for my education, I got a lot more in-depth experience than I would have in the regular teacher education program.”Boxberger grew up in Russell, where his mom, Kim, is a long-time kindergarten teacher.&nbsp;His hesitation in pursuing the same career as his mom vanished when, while transferring from Kansas State University to FHSU, he heard about the Noyce scholarship.He treasured the experiences that a smaller school district provided him as a student and welcomes the opportunity to offer the same experience to his future students.“I was able to be very involved and knew all my teachers and coaches in high school,” Boxberger said. “We were able to build relationships that students in larger schools might not be able to. Our discussions in Noyce seminar help us realize the importance of those aspects of education."Steinert – a biology education major from Olmitz, a small town in Barton County – also is a transfer student and was able to take advantage of a partnership that FHSU has with five western Kansas community colleges through the Noyce Scholarship Program.Steinert, a graduate of Garden City Community College, was the first transfer student to become a Noyce scholar through the community college partnership.&nbsp;Now, she looks forward to teaching students in a rural district similar to the one she attended at Otis-Bison, which includes students from Otis, Bison, Olmitz, Albert, and Timken.&nbsp;“I graduated in a class of 17, so I knew my classmates very well,” she said. “It was a great family dynamic, and we were able to be involved in so many activities.”Steinert stressed that a benefit of teaching in a rural program is the chance to stay connected to students well as they progress through their K-12 experience.“When you see them every year, you can form better relationships with your students,” she said. “That creates a more welcoming environment for learning.”To date, 54 Fort Hays State students in the Noyce Teacher-Leader Program have received the scholarship. All but three of those (who dropped out because they changed their majors) are either still teaching, student teaching or attending school.Students have until Dec. 1 to apply for a spring 2021 award. Those interested in starting in the fall of 2021 have until Feb. 15, 2021, to apply. Students with junior level status (45 credit hours) by the spring semester are eligible to apply. HPD Activity Log, Oct. 22-25

Fall harvest has come to a screeching halt for my family. We have had some minor issues that have slowed us down, but those issues are always expected during the marathon known as fall harvest. We began back in August picking corn. Since then, we have transitioned to popcorn followed by soybeans followed by sorghum with wheat sowing sprinkled into the mix starting in late September.  

And now here we are in November. I can always begin to see the light at the end of the proverbial fall harvest tunnel when we start cutting sorghum. Once we move into our sorghum fields, I know we are getting closer to being done with harvest. We are closer to being done eating sandwiches in the field. Closer to putting fewer miles on my vehicle. Closer to having regular grocery bills for a family of four instead of for a harvest crew. Closer to having my husband home at night to help with bedtime routines. Closer to returning to order and normalcy.

When we start harvesting the sorghum, it’s as if a switch is flipped in my mind. It happens every year. For so many months before the sorghum harvest, I try to stay laser focused on the tasks at hand that need to be done on a day-by-day basis. I do what I can to help the crew stay as efficient as possible. I put my head down and keep moving forward while trying to preserve as much of a routine as possible for the kids. But by the time sorghum harvest rolls around, my focus wears off, and I begin envisioning our anticipated “downtime” once harvest wraps up. I am ready to get the crop in and return to normalcy with my family.

However, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. Case in point — 2020. The recent change of weather has completely shut down our harvest efforts. We were running full-steam ahead, but our late October ice and snow has made it impossible to get the machines into fields. It’s simply too wet. My husband half-jokingly stated we should be done with harvest by Christmas now. 

In the 10 years I’ve been part of this farm, the latest we have ever gone with fall harvest is the day before Thanksgiving. I’d like to aim for the eve of Thanksgiving this year if possible. But I realize we very well could be harvesting into December. Afterall, we still have the sunflower crop to harvest after we get done with the sorghum.

One silver lining to harvest being delayed because of weather is my husband has been home during the evenings. My family has been able to eat warm meals at the kitchen table together. We’ve cuddled on the couch with the kids to enjoy a family movie night. We’ve played board games in the living room before bedtimes. It’s a rare occurrence to have him join us at home in the evenings during fall harvest, but it’s one we truly embrace when we get the sweet opportunity. 

I know this pause in harvest will soon end, and I also know we will eventually get all of the crops out of the fields. Even though it’s less than ideal — and regardless of my desire to get harvest done as soon as possible — there is a possibility that we will harvest clear into late December. I’ll continue to remind myself that whenever we officially finish our fall harvest it will still allow my little farm family some much anticipated normalcy before spring planting begins and another busy season rolls around.

Kansas Farm Bureau Insight: Anticipating normalcy

Catching rainbow trout in Kansas seems like an oxymoron; sort of like polar bear hunting in West Virginia or whale watching at Yellowstone Lake. Kansas is known for its walleye, crappie and catfish, but trout?

&nbsp;Wildlife and fisheries programs here in KS are funded largely by revenue from license sales that comes back to the state from the federal government. That money is reallocated back to Kansas according to the number of hunting and fishing licenses sold each year, so the more licenses sold, the more money we get back. In the 1990’s, Kansas began a trout stocking program as a way to generate more fishing license sales in the off-season, and as a way to create more fishing opportunities during the fall and winter.&nbsp;

I spoke with Jeff Conley, Fisheries Program Specialist with the KS Dept of Wildlife Parks and Tourism KDWPT) who oversees the trout stocking program. This year there will be 32 lakes and water impoundments across Kansas stocked with trout. Fifteen of those are private lakes owned by towns or cities that are enrolled in the Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP), meaning they purchase their own fish, but allow the KDWPT to manage the lakes. The rest of the lakes and reservoirs stocked with trout are state owned and operated.&nbsp;

Although KDWPT operates 5 fish hatcheries here in Kansas, none are equipped to hatch and raise trout, which are especially sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature, water quality etc., so it’s more cost effective to purchase trout from commercial hatcheries for the stocking program. This year, a Colorado hatchery will supply all trout for the western half of the state, trout for the south central and south eastern portions of the state will come from a hatchery in Missouri, and a hatchery in Nebraska will supply trout for the northern and north central portions of Kansas. &nbsp;

Rainbow trout are the easiest and least expensive trout for hatcheries to raise, making them also the least expensive to buy, plus they tolerate warm temperatures better than other trout, so this year all trout stocked here in KS will be rainbows. Water in the seep stream below Kanopolis reservoir comes from the bottom of the reservoir, and the lakes and ponds that make up the mined land area in eastern KS are old strip mine pits that are very deep, so the water in those impoundments is very cold.&nbsp; Trout in most locations are not expected to live through the hot Kansas summers, but trout in those 2 locations often survive.&nbsp;

All locations are stocked twice a month from November through March; waters in the southwestern region are stocked November through April. A complete stocking schedule can be found on the KDWPT website, <a href="http://www.ksoutdoors.com">www.ksoutdoors.com</a>. Click on “fishing” at the top, then click “special fishing programs” on the left. The “trout program” will appear in a box toward the center of the screen. All available information on the trout fishing and stocking program is available there including license and permit requirements which vary from region to region.&nbsp;

Over the past 10 years, nearly 1.7 million trout (about 3.7 million pounds) have been stocked in Kansas lakes through the program; that averages out to be over 150,000 per year. This year alone, over 95,000 trout (more than 56.000 pounds) will be stocked in the 17 state owned lakes alone. The lakes enrolled in the Communities Fisheries Assistance Program purchase their own fish, so the total number of trout stocked in those 15 lakes is unknown. The state record rainbow trout weighted 15.72 pounds, was 28.5 inches long and was caught in Kill Creek Park Lake in Johnson Co. in February, 2014 by Josh McCullough from Spring Hill, KS.&nbsp;

I know fishermen who do not keep any of the trout they catch because they deem them to be less desirable fish, and yes, compared to walleye and crappie, which is kinda’ like comparing a Volkswagen to a Cadillac, I would agree. But trout is a very mild tasting fish that actually contains higher than average amounts of good Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin B12. Trout is also known to help reduce bad cholesterol and to help lower high blood pressure.

I don’t ever order trout in a restaurant because it always comes with the head still attached and I’m not real crazy about my meal looking back at me. However, trout can be filleted just like any other fish, and can be battered and pan fried or deep fried just like catfish, or can be basted with herb butter and baked. The way I see it, I have now officially removed all excuses for not fishing here in Kansas this winter. This year, a Colorado hatchery will supply all trout for the western half of the state, trout for the south central and south eastern portions of the state will come from a hatchery in Missouri, and a hatchery in Nebraska will supply trout for the northern and north central portions of Kansas. &nbsp;Rainbow trout are the easiest and least expensive trout for hatcheries to raise, making them also the least expensive to buy, plus they tolerate warm temperatures better than other trout, so this year all trout stocked here in KS will be rainbows. Water in the seep stream below Kanopolis reservoir comes from the bottom of the reservoir, and the lakes and ponds that make up the mined land area in eastern KS are old strip mine pits that are very deep, so the water in those impoundments is very cold.&nbsp; Trout in most locations are not expected to live through the hot Kansas summers, but trout in those 2 locations often survive.&nbsp;All locations are stocked twice a month from November through March; waters in the southwestern region are stocked November through April. A complete stocking schedule can be found on the KDWPT website, <a href="http://www.ksoutdoors.com">www.ksoutdoors.com</a>. Click on “fishing” at the top, then click “special fishing programs” on the left. The “trout program” will appear in a box toward the center of the screen. All available information on the trout fishing and stocking program is available there including license and permit requirements which vary from region to region.&nbsp;Over the past 10 years, nearly 1.7 million trout (about 3.7 million pounds) have been stocked in Kansas lakes through the program; that averages out to be over 150,000 per year. This year alone, over 95,000 trout (more than 56.000 pounds) will be stocked in the 17 state owned lakes alone. The lakes enrolled in the Communities Fisheries Assistance Program purchase their own fish, so the total number of trout stocked in those 15 lakes is unknown. The state record rainbow trout weighted 15.72 pounds, was 28.5 inches long and was caught in Kill Creek Park Lake in Johnson Co. in February, 2014 by Josh McCullough from Spring Hill, KS.&nbsp;I know fishermen who do not keep any of the trout they catch because they deem them to be less desirable fish, and yes, compared to walleye and crappie, which is kinda’ like comparing a Volkswagen to a Cadillac, I would agree. But trout is a very mild tasting fish that actually contains higher than average amounts of good Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin B12. Trout is also known to help reduce bad cholesterol and to help lower high blood pressure.I don’t ever order trout in a restaurant because it always comes with the head still attached and I’m not real crazy about my meal looking back at me. However, trout can be filleted just like any other fish, and can be battered and pan fried or deep fried just like catfish, or can be basted with herb butter and baked. The way I see it, I have now officially removed all excuses for not fishing here in Kansas this winter.
