 Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas is excited to announce the opening of its new thrift store in Hays, located at 1011 Centennial Blvd. The store officially opened its doors on February 3, providing a much-needed resource for low-income families in the Hays area and the western region of the Salina Diocese.

“Our focus with this new thrift store is to provide affordable clothing and household items for families who need a little extra help,” said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. “This store is about accessibility and dignity, ensuring that people can meet their basic needs close to home, in one convenient location.”

To celebrate this new facility, Catholic Charities will host a&nbsp;grand opening and ribbon-cutting event on February 14 at 9 a.m.&nbsp;at 1011 Centennial Blvd. The community is warmly invited to join us for this special occasion, tour the new space, and learn more about how the thrift store and other programs will serve local families.

Having the thrift store located onsite allows families who already visit Catholic Charities for assistance—such as food boxes, diapers, and hygiene kits—to access affordable clothing and household goods without the need for additional travel.

“We are so grateful for the support of the Hays community and our incredible volunteers,” Robl added. “Their generosity and commitment have made this expansion possible, and we look forward to continuing to serve families in need with their help.”

The thrift store is open to the public Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and donations of gently used clothing, household items, and small appliances are accepted Tuesday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those with questions about donations may contact Shannon Werth, Hays Thrift Store Manager, at 785-625-2644.

She was selected for the group and will be traveling to New York City for two performances at Carnegie Hall under the direction of renowned conductors. Tayler will leave on February 6th and will meet other finalists from around the world. 

During her trip, she will have rehearsals and enjoy sightseeing at famous landmarks, as well as the opportunity to see a Broadway show. She will also explore dining options, museums, and everything else the Big Apple has to offer. We are incredibly proud of you, Tayler, and hope you have an amazing experience!

The Kansas Legislature show returns to SHPBS on Feb. 7

GOVE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Tuesday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by Garrett L. Parker, 32, Dighton, was northbound on Kansas 23 just north of County Road C.

The driver was forced to evade a southbound semi that&nbsp;failed to maintain the lane. The semi traveled into the east ditch and overturned.

EMS transported Parker to the Lane County Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

A Garden City man was arrested in Hays following a report of a suspicious person dressed in all black.

According to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, a records check revealed that 31-year-old Oscar Salazar had stolen a van near the Garden City High School.

At around 12:30 p.m., the police department received a call about a suspicious man in a black sweatshirt and black pants walking in circles in the 1500 block of Commerce Parkway.

Officers found Salazar, who initially claimed he had run out of gas. Officers conducted a records check. According to Scheibler, Salazar later admitted to stealing the van, which had been unlocked and running.

Salazar was arrested on a charge of possession of stolen property and was booked into the Ellis County Jail.

The Ellis County emergency manager presented a report on disaster preparedness to the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday.

Lyle Pantle, Ellis County emergency manager, presented a document aligned with the Kansas Planning Standards. These standards are updated every five years to maintain Ellis County's disaster preparedness.

Pantle said a recent update to the document includes the addition of an emergency operations mapper, which can assist external agencies during a disaster.

A formal review of the plan was approved.

Ellis County Fair Board President Justin Scheck discussed updated rental agreements for the rodeo grounds.

The updated rental agreements specify fees of $100 for up to four hours or $200 per day for arena use, $15 per night for stall rentals and $25 per day per camper for hookup and electrical use.

"Some of the people who use the rodeo arena said that if we raise it to $200 per day, they're probably not gonna use it," Scheck said.

Scheck proposed temporarily reducing the per-day fee to encourage groups like the Fort Hays State University club to continue using the facility rather than seeking alternatives.

The contract was approved to update the fee to $75 for four hours and $150 for a full day, with an annual review.

The other rental agreements remained the same.&nbsp;

During the past few years, the Ellis County Commission has upgraded aging HVAC systems in several county facilities. Glassman Corporation was the contractor on a project to upgrade equipment at the administrative building.

Glassman submitted the project for an award for energy efficiency.

Joe Glassman with Glassman Corporation presented the Associated General Contractors State of Kansas Building Award of Honor to the commission on Tuesday.

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling signed off on the annual Ellis County townships' financial reports.

While the terms are confidential, all parties have come to a mutually beneficial arrangement that reflects our steadfast commitment to professional growth and quality patient care.

This resolution underscores the value we place on maintaining the long-term sustainability of medical care in western Kansas.

HaysMed reaches agreement with doctors on noncompete clauses

The new American Legion Post 173 is designed to serve the Hays community by providing a space for small gatherings.

The building, 5025 General Hays Road., is available for rent and can accommodate up to 99 people. It also provides tables and chairs for various events.

Harvey Jansonius, a member of the American Legion Post in Hays, said the new facility is designed to serve the community's next generation.

"It's not your grandpa's American Legion or your dad's American Legion. It's ours," Jansonius said.

The building measures 40 by 60 feet, with part of the space designated for offices, restrooms and a planned kitchenette. The Legion does not offer food or catering services, leaving renters responsible for their own arrangements.

There are plans for future Wi-Fi in the building.

The facility does not have a bar or kitchen, but renters may bring their own alcohol and must handle the required permits and liabilities.

The facility rents for $300 per day, with a $200 refundable deposit if it is left clean. For rental availability, contact Jansonius at 785-623-8468 or American Legion Post member Jay Pfeifer at 785-432-1965.

"In our community, everybody had monster weddings," Pfeifer said. "Those aren't so big anymore, so we thought the need was for a smaller venue like the one we have here."&nbsp;

American Legion Post 173 offers tables, chairs, and a podium for meetings, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and veteran-related events.

Rental funds directly support veterans and community programs, including gas, hotel stays, food for veterans, youth sponsorships and high school awards.

The building has received rental interest but was unavailable until city occupancy approval was granted.

"We have turned down many people, but now we're ready to roll," Pfeifer said.

The American Legion Post is operated by volunteers and veterans, with support from groups such as the American Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

American Legion Post 173 opens new venue for rent in Hays

ELLIS COUNTY—Two people were&nbsp; injured in an accident just before 4 a.m. Monday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Volvo semi driven by&nbsp;Abdikarim J.&nbsp;Muse, 25, Minneapolis, Minnesota, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of 380th Avenue. The semi left the roadway to the south, crossed the median, overturned and came to rest on its driver's side blocking both eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. 

An eastbound 2016 GMC Sierra driven by Derek A&nbsp; Miller, 35, Clarksville, Tennessee,&nbsp;collided with the overturned semi.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Muse and Miller to Hays Medical Center. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized in Hays after semi overturns on I-70

The Ellis County emergency manager will present a report on disaster preparedness to the Ellis County Commission at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

After the local review and updates are finalized, the State of Kansas will review and approve the plan before it is sent back to the Ellis County Commission for final adoption.

Ellis County Fair Board President Justin Scheck will discuss updated rental agreements for the rodeo grounds.

The fair board was also asked to provide an estimate of volunteer hours for various events throughout the year and the time spent on projects, mowing and fairground maintenance.

During the past few years, the Ellis County Commission has upgraded aging HVAC systems in several county facilities. One project, which involved upgrading equipment at the administrative building, was awarded to Glassman Corporation.

Joe Glassman with Glassman Corporation will discuss the award with the commission.

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling will present a review of the annual Ellis County townships' financial reports.

Jim VanSteenhouse came face-to-face with a grizzly bear and lived to share his story at the Hays Super Buck Dinner.

His Feb. 1 appearance at the North Oak Community Church also included antler competitions and giveaways to foster connections between faith and outdoor enthusiasm.

Following a dinner, VanSteenhouse took the stage to share his harrowing September 2015 encounter and the lasting scars it left behind.

VanSteenhouse is an adventurer and archery enthusiast from Houston who ventured to Canada’s Mackenzie Mountain Range to pursue a moose hunt.

After being dropped off by helicopter, VanSteenhouse and his Canadian guide, Jordan Wagner, found themselves in a remote area where they spotted a large grizzly bear but initially dismissed it.

On Sept. 5, the fourth day of the trip and miles from base camp, VanSteenhouse’s role shifted from hunting to being hunted when he was suddenly ambushed.

"When Jordan said 'Bear,' he wasn't looking at me. It's like he was looking straight through me," he said.

Wagner fires a shot to scare off the bear, and despite VanSteenhouse's efforts to escape, the bear charges and attacks VanSteenhouse.

The bear lunges at VanSteenhouse, targeting his head and shoulders as he attempts to shield himself. The grizzly bites into both shoulders, his right hip, left thigh, a calf and a hand.

"As my hand got caught up in his mouth, it just started snapping like twigs,"&nbsp;VanSteenhouse said. "I'll never forget the way that he smelled. He smelled like death."

Caught in the grizzly’s powerful jaws, he believed his life was ending and questioned if he was ready for heaven. At that moment, his thoughts turned to his wife and daughter.

"I open my eyes, and out of the left corner of my eye, I see the bear's nostrils right there. His nostrils were close, and I could feel the air just sucking into his nose," he said.

VanSteenhouse was then dragged more than 100 yards down the rain-soaked mountain. When he tried to wipe the water from his face, he realized his fingers were twisted in unnatural directions.

He then attempts to wipe his face with his forearm, only to realize it was blood streaming from his head. Struggling to his feet, VanSteenhouse stumbles up the hill in search of Wagner, leaving a trail of red on the green moss beneath him.

VanSteenhouse reunites with Wagner, and after several failed rescue attempts using a satellite phone, a helicopter finally arrives to evacuate him.

VanSteenhouse credits his survival in the near-fatal attack to the "grace of God" and the courage of Wagner, an experience that forever changed his life.

Not only did he escape death, he found renewed faith, strengthened his marriage, and founded Bear Man Ministries to share his story and inspire others.

Hays man elected to FHLBank Topeka board of directors 

Join the Hays Symphony for a special night to celebrate the talented music students of FHSU. 

The symphony will be presenting its annual Arias and Concertos Concert on Saturday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Brian Buckstead, assistant professor of violin and viola at FHSU.

The annual February concert honors the winners of the Department of Music’s Concerto/Aria Competition, an auditioned event held last December. Since the start of the Fall 2024 semester, these students have poured hours of practice into preparing their pieces. Now, the winners’ efforts will be shared for all the Hays community to listen to.

The three soloists performing this year are Ashley Vilaysing (clarinet), Shan Wang (soprano), and Adam Ward (euphonium). FHSU students are permitted to audition for the competition every other year. 

Notably, this is Vilaysing’s second year as a winner of the competition, the first being in 2023 where she performed Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet with the Hays Symphony.

Ashley Vilaysing is a senior pursuing a major in music education with a minor in psychology. She is involved in many ensembles, with clarinet being her primary instrument. Passionate about creating a love for music, Vilaysing plans to teach in western Kansas after graduation, where she can inspire future students within the music classroom. Vilaysing will perform Gioachino Rossini’s Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra.

Shan Wang graduated from Zhengzhou Sias University in China with a bachelor's degree in music performance. Currently, Wang is pursuing a postgraduate degree in vocal music at Fort Hays State University while studying under Professor Elisa Ramon. After graduating with the postgraduate degree, Wang will return to Sias University to work and contribute to the educational development of the school and her hometown area. At the concert, Wang will perform “Si. Mi chiamano Mimi” from Giacomo Puccini’s opera La bohème.

Adam Ward is pursuing a degree in music education. Ward’s area of specialty is low brass, with his primary instrument being the euphonium. Once Ward graduates, he plans to pursue a master’s in music performance with intentions to teach at the collegiate level. February’s concert will close with Ward performing Barbara York’s Concerto for Euphonium and Orchestra, “Creative States.”

Each of the musicians express their honor and excitement to participate in this concert with fellow musicians from the department.

Like with all Hays Symphony concerts, attendance is free and open to the public. Following the concert, attendees are invited to the hall’s lobby to meet the musicians at the post-concert reception sponsored by Downtown Hays Development Corporation.

The New Year inspires new goals including financial resolutions.

The holidays can be a challenging time to save money, and now you may be motivated to regain control of your spending habits. However, saving, reallocating funds, and budgeting can be overwhelming tasks requiring attention to detail and time. The good news is that there are methods to simplify the process.

Budgets don’t have to be restrictive. In fact, a budget is simply an organizational tool that can help you keep track of income and expenses. With increased awareness, a budget can help you determine the best way to allocate your money. Overall, a budget can help you get “financially fit.” This means effectively managing your money to meet short-term and long-term goals.

So, instead of letting money management overwhelm you, here are a few ways to rethink the budgeting process.

First, pay yourself! A rewarding budgeting method is to “pay yourself first.” 

This means putting a set amount of money from each paycheck into savings or investment portfolios before spending anything. Organizing the remainder of your income is simplified and reduces the temptation to overspend on things you may regret. Paying yourself first streamlines goals, and for some, this can be done automatically through an electronic bank withdrawal system to make saving mindless.

Another key step to building a budget is to get organized. Keep track of bills to quantify expenses and get a realistic picture of how you spend money.
