Numerous students from Tiger Media Network recently earned statewide, regional, and national honors for their work during the last year.

TMN, the convergent media hub for Fort Hays State University students, has grown throughout the last five years and employs students from multiple majors at the university. “The work our students produce helps them develop leadership skills and civic engagement and provides a real-world learning environment – all things essential to producing engaged, global citizens,” said Nick Schwien, director of Tiger Media Network. “We are extremely proud of the professional work our students continually showcase, and the awards they have received recently are a great way for them to earn the recognition they deserve not only statewide but regionally and nationally as well.”

Multiple TMN students collaborated to earn second-place honors in the 2023 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts contest for Video Sports Live Game Production. Their submission was the student-produced, live broadcast of the 2022 NCAA Division II Central Region women’s basketball championship game between FHSU and Missouri Western.

BEA competitions do not separate universities into categories based on size or enrollment. Instead, the TMN students were in the same category as many larger NCAA Division I institutions.

“For our students and their work to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the top broadcasting schools in the country, regardless of size or division, is a testament to the quality students we have at Fort Hays and working for TMN,” said Russell Heitmann, news and sports director for TMN. “I am really proud of how much ownership the students take in the productions, so for their work to be recognized on a national scale speaks to the students and their abilities.”

Tiger Media Network was ranked 23rd in Top Winning Sports Programs from BEA in 2023. That ranking is based on student achievements at the BEA Festival of Media Arts, which is known as the preeminent international media competition focused on student and faculty creative endeavors. TMN students were ranked higher than multiple DI schools, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Baylor University, and West Virginia University. FHSU was the only university in Kansas ranked in the top 30.

“Through our co-curricular collaboration with TMN, we offer students exceptional&nbsp;opportunities to combine technical skills and creativity to develop compelling stories in multimedia format,”&nbsp;said Melissa Hunsicker-Walburn, chair of the Department of Informatics, which includes Tiger Media Network. “TMN is a learning lab that enhances and expands the opportunities for students to refine and improve their creative products. Award-winning, multimedia student portfolios help our students differentiate themselves in the job market thanks to organizations like BEA and KAB.”

FHSU students also earned nine awards from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters – including five first-place honors.

Freshman Caleb Todd won first in Sports Color Commentator or Sideline Reporter in the college audio category, and Freshman Garrett Wellbrock won first in Sports Play-by-Play in the college audio category.

Senior Tim Schoepflin won top honors for station promotion in the college visual category, and TMN swept the categories for best station website in the college audio and visual divisions.

In the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards in Region 7, three TMN students were named finalists. Region 7 includes colleges from Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Sophomore Madison Shapland and sophomore Caitlin Leiker were named finalists in the Photo Essay/Slideshow category. Junior Kerrigan Hutton was a finalist in the category for Television General News Reporting.

Tiger Media Network also received international coverage from NewTek and Vizrt for its student productions and learning environment for students.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects, including three northwest Kansas counties.

The letting took place April 19, 2023, in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work.

Three-day weather outlook

LEAVENWORTH - Sierra Eichman was recently honored with the 2023 Graduate Student Leadership Award from the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas. She is one of twelve candidates pursuing her Doctor of Occupational Therapy in the inaugural class of the OTD program. On April 28, 2023, her class was recognized at their pinning ceremony in the Annunciation Chapel on the campus of the University of St. Mary.

Eichman received the Graduate Student Leadership Award for displaying leadership in the mission of the University and demonstrating the four core values of Community, Excellence, Justice, and Respect. She is also the current President of Student Occupational Therapy Association at the University. Under her leadership, SOTA has completed numerous community outreach events and has promoted the role of occupational therapists in society. In addition to her coursework, Eichman has completed fieldwork at USD 453 in Leavenworth, Kansas, University of Kansas Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center in Kansas City, Kansas, and the Veterans Administration’s Domiciliary in Leavenworth, Kansas. She will begin a 12-week intensive fieldwork rotation with Hays Medical Center’s Outpatient Occupational Therapy Department later this month before returning to USM two more rotations in the Kansas City Metro area.

Sierra is a 2017 graduate of Hays High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Health Professions from Fort Hays State University in 2021. She is the daughter of David and Sheila Eichman, Hays, and the granddaughter of Ronald and Carol Whitehurst, Garden City, and the late Cleo and Frances Eichman, formerly of Palco. After receiving her Doctor of Occupational Therapy next May, she plans to return to western Kansas as an occupational therapist.

Hays High grad Eichman receives graduate student leadership award

CHEYENNE COUNTY— Two people were injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Monday in Cheyenne County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Chevy Lumina driven by&nbsp; Jaren K.&nbsp;Adelman, 18, Colby, was northbound on County Road 20 at County Road M.

The driver lost control of the car and it began to swerve from one side of the road to the other.&nbsp; The car entered the west ditch sideways, slid over the embankment into a field, rolled and both occupants were ejected.

EMS transported&nbsp;Adelman to Swedish Medical Center in Denver and a passenger identified as Michael A. Adams, 31, Colby, to the Cheyenne County Hospital. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

The <a href="https://wildwestfestival.com/">Wild West Festival</a> is needing your help to continue to make the event happen.&nbsp;

Volunteers, as well as sponsors, are needed as expenses continue to grow for the annual Hays event.

Volunteers are most needed in the days leading up to the event for set up and immediately after the event for tear down.

Volunteers will be needed on Monday, June 26, through Wednesday, June 28, for set up and Sunday, July 2, for tear down.

Although some of the work, including setting up fencing, includes lifting, you do not have to be big and burley to assist the festival.

Volunteers also are needed to set up chairs, set up trash barrels, set up tents, set up ticket lines and place signage.

You must be at least 21 and provide the festival with a valid driver’s license or ID.

College and high school groups are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult instructor, sponsor or supervisor. Volunteer hours can be used to meet community service requirements.

Volunteer start time is 6:30 a.m., and the group usually finishes for the day by mid-afternoon.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves, sunscreen, work clothes, closed-toed work shoes and jacket for cool mornings.

The festival will provide a light breakfast, snacks, lunch, water and sports drinks.

The festival also is looking for groups to work security during the festival. Security personnel will work with entertainers, as well as man the gates to help check for contraband.

This personnel also will help make sure people keep alcohol in designated areas on the festival grounds and check IDs.

Groups of people of all shapes and sizes, men and women, have all served in these roles,&nbsp;Sandi Maier, event coordinator, said.

&nbsp;Maier said the festival has always struggled to find enough volunteers during the short set up and tear down time the city allows the festival.

As costs continue to increase, the festival is in more need of sponsors. She said the festival was about at the break-even point last year.

The committee chose to make a small increase in ticket prices this year, but Maier said the group does not want to rely on steep ticket hikes to fund the festival.

<a href="https://wildwestfestival.com/tickets/">General admission tickets will be $30 this year for all three nights. They will be $35 per night at the gate and $200 for VIP tickets.</a>

"That's our problem," Maier said. "We don't want to keep raising ticket prices because we want it to be affordable for families to come."

Compared to other concert series or even single-act concerts, Wild West Festival tickets are very affordable, she said.

Maier said the committee is concerned about next year and beyond. The cost of this year's entertainers has not quite doubled, she said.

The cost of fireworks is up by about $10,000. Staging costs also have increased.

Wild West Festival seeks volunteers, sponsors to address increasing costs

LANE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Monday in Lane County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 International semi driven by Thomas Westerman, 33, Great Bend was northbound in 4000 Block of Dodge Road.

The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and rolled one time into the east ditch.

EMS transported Westerman to the Lane County Hospital in Dighton. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Street patching in various Hays locations starts today

After a lengthy discussion Tuesday, the Ellis County
Commission elected to wait a couple of weeks to decide on a grant that could
lead to the closure of the 12th Street bridge in Hays.

Ellis County Public Works Director Brendan Mackey presented
the commission with a proposal this week to close the deteriorating bridge on
the western edge of Hays, with the idea of using the grant funds received from
the closure to repair a bridge over the Saline River in northern Ellis County.

Mackey said changes, he and other members of the Kansas
County Highway Association were able to negotiate with the Kansas Department of
Transportation on expanded options for closing a bridge and using the
funds to repair other bridges in the highway system that are in poor condition.

The recommendation from Mackey was to submit a grant in which the county would close the 12th Street bridge. If approved, the
county would use about $232,000 to repair a bridge 12.5 miles north
of Ellis on 125th Avenue over the Saline River.

“With the way the grant is written now, we would have no
cost for the cost share,” Mackey said. “The only costs we would have would be
the non-participating costs, which would be the preliminary engineering and the
right of way acquisition.”

An engineer also recommended closing the 12th Street bridge. Mackey said they have had several engineers over several years look at
it and recommend the same closure.

Mackey and County Administrator Darin Myers told the
commission while they have never invited city officials to a commission
meeting to discuss the bridge, the two entities have had discussions about the
bridge. Myers said he has email confirmation the city did not have
concerns about closing the bridge.

The bridge is almost entirely within the city limits of Hays.
When the Eighth Street bridge was replaced by Ellis County in 2008-9 the
county paid for the construction, even though a portion of it is in city
limits. Mackey said they do not believe the city would be willing to pay for
work on the 12th Street bridge.

Mackey said there are 11 bridges in Ellis County that are
considered “poor.” The 12th Street bridge is one of those 11. County
Commissioner Michael Berges asked if the county could use the grant to close a
similar bridge and use the funds from closure to repair the 12th Street bridge.

Mackey said the county could do that and even if they
elected to close the 12th Street bridge they could open it back up and
add it back to the road system in Ellis County. 

“Just like if we build a road that hasn't existed before, we
can add a bridge to our system, because this will be taken off of our system,”
Mackey said. “A county could come back and five years, 10 years or tomorrow and
decide no we want to fund this structure. We feel it's vital to the growth of
our county.”

Berges said the county has to work to figure out a long-term
plan for fixing the deteriorating bridges within Ellis County. 

“Is that part of the plan is to continue to use this process,
so that's what we're looking at doing for 12 Street this year?” Berges said. “Are
we looking at another bridge next year to close to rehab another one and another
one? I mean, are we looking at shrinking down our bridge population for lack of
a better term and have to go through this kind of commission?”

Mackey said they did identify a bridge that is oversized and
needs to be replaced north of Ellis that would be replaced by a culvert and the
county could apply for the $50,000 in grants. 

Residents who live in the area voiced their concerns with
the commission about the possibility of the closure. They claimed the
bridge was left to fail and that the county does not have the data as to why
the bridge exists. 

Mackey said they have done traffic studies and he
presented the commission with that data last year. It shows that the numbers
lean heavily toward people using Eighth Street and not 12th Street.

“I don’t want to take structures out, I want everyone to get
where they are going safely,” Mackey said. “The problem is the county and city
didn’t act in a timely matter to this infrastructure so something has to give
somewhere.”

He also presented the commission with the option to change
the grant application. They can apply for the application with the closure of
the bridge northwest of Ellis, which would net the county $50,000, and then fund
the replacement of the 12th Street bridge without grant funds.

He estimated that the bridge replacement would cost more than
$1 million. It would have to be a complete replacement. 

“Having a closure gives you more points towards being
selected (for the grant),” Mackey said. 

He also said there isn’t as much funding for this area
because of the small population.

A similar grant was accepted in years past that allowed Ellis
County to close a bridge.

Hays Attorney John T. Bird was one of the speakers in opposition
to the closure. Bird lives near the bridge on 12th Street.

He brought up several concerns to the commission including
the ability of emergency vehicles to get across the railroad tracks in the event
of a train derailment and the amount of traffic that uses the bridge.

He urged the commission to repair the bridge and then fund a
replacement in the future.

Bird also said because the residents whose homes are in
that area pay several hundred thousand dollars in taxes and said, “We deserve to
have that (the repairs.)”

Mackay said the repairs, to make it smooth, will accelerate
the wear and tear off the bridge deck. He does not recommend just making repairs
to the bridge because it could shorten the lifespan of the bridge.

Former County Commissioner Glenn Deihl also addressed the
commission and said they were aware of the condition of the bridges.

“There was a long-term plan in place, unfortunately, the
county had other priorities and the plan went to the wayside,” Deihl said.

The current commission has worked in recent years to begin
setting aside money in a special highway and road and bridge fund to pay to replace the aging county infrastructure.

The commission elected to table the issue. Berges wants
Mackey to put together two different grants. 

The first would recommend the closure of the structure on
the county line northwest of Ellis that would then be turned into a culvert.

The second grant proposal would be to close the 12th
Street bridge.

Mackey said if the commission has any doubts about closing
the 12th Street bridge, he urged the commission to not use the grant application. If
the county accepts the funds and then elects not to close the bridge, it will
have a negative effect the next time Ellis County applies for a KDOT grant.

Commission Nathan Leiker said the county needs to get the process
started.

“We have to start repairs, that’s been my focus,” Leiker
said. “The process that it started today will see very, very little action,
publicly, for a year and a half, more of less.”

Mackey said the grant that they applied for last fall, in
2022, was called the 2024 Off System Highway Grant because the state’s start
dates are so far out.

Leiker said they may have to make some improvements to the
12th Street bridge in the near future but if it becomes unsafe for
travel, then they will have to close the bridge.

“I’d rather be proactive and prevent an accident then have a
catastrophic failure,” Leiker said.

The weight limit, according to Mackey is 15 tons, and an
engineer has recommended the county reduce the weight limit.

“If we have an engineer’s report out there currently stating
that the weight limit needs to be restricted, I think that needs to be done,”
Leiker said. “Not when, but now.” 

The grant application deadline is May 25. 

The commission's final meeting in the month of May is May 16.

Ellis Co. Commission tables 12th Street bridge closure discussion

The Center for Empowering Victims of Gender-based Violence (CEVGV) at Fort Hays State University recently announced the formation of a new community advisory board, bringing together leaders from social entrepreneurship, business and finance, victim advocacy, and mental health professions. This collaborative effort is dedicated to advancing the mission of the CEVGV to support victims of gender-based violence and promote a safer, more inclusive rural community.

The CEVGV, a leading research center housed in the Fort Hays State University Criminal Justice program, is committed to developing evidence-based solutions to address and prevent gender-based violence. The center aims to empower individuals affected by violence and create lasting change in communities through interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach. The formation of the community advisory board is a strategic step in furthering this mission by leveraging the expertise and experience of its distinguished members.

The community advisory board members include:

“Together, these esteemed professionals will provide guidance, support, and strategic insight to the CEVGV,” said Dr. Rachel Dolechek, FHSU assistant professor of applied business studies and community outreach coordinator. “Their diverse perspectives and deep understanding of the issues surrounding gender-based violence will be invaluable in shaping the center's research, programs, and outreach initiatives.”

“The board will also play a critical role in fostering partnerships with other organizations, institutions, and stakeholders working to eliminate gender-based violence,” said Dr. Ziwei Qi, FHSU assistant professor of criminal justice and the co-founder of the CEVGV.

 </figure>&nbsp;FHSU University RelationsThe Center for Empowering Victims of Gender-based Violence (CEVGV) at Fort Hays State University recently announced the formation of a new community advisory board, bringing together leaders from social entrepreneurship, business and finance, victim advocacy, and mental health professions. This collaborative effort is dedicated to advancing the mission of the CEVGV to support victims of gender-based violence and promote a safer, more inclusive rural community.The CEVGV, a leading research center housed in the Fort Hays State University Criminal Justice program, is committed to developing evidence-based solutions to address and prevent gender-based violence. The center aims to empower individuals affected by violence and create lasting change in communities through interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach. The formation of the community advisory board is a strategic step in furthering this mission by leveraging the expertise and experience of its distinguished members.The community advisory board members include:<ol>
 <li>Anniston Weber&nbsp;is a victim advocate and campus outreach coordinator of the Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services, Hays, KS.</li><li>Becca Stevens&nbsp;is an American author, speaker, and social entrepreneur dedicated to serving vulnerable communities and advocating for social justice. She is the founder and president of Thistle Farms, a nonprofit organization based in Nashville, Tennessee, that provides a safe and supportive community for women who have survived trafficking, prostitution, and addiction.</li><li>Cristina Jimenez, a former researcher of CEVGV and Criminal Justice alumni of FHSU, is currently a University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law student.</li><li>Dr. Christie Brungardt&nbsp;is a renowned expert on relationship violence education and leadership and founded Jana's Campaign, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healthy relationships and preventing gender-based violence.</li><li>Kaley Conner is a prominent professional in mental health. She is currently working in education and outreach at High Plains Mental Health Center, Hays </li><li>Loganne Ditter,&nbsp;a graduating senior double majoring in criminal justice and psychology, &nbsp;will pursue her graduate degree in criminal justice at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Fall 2023.</li><li>Megan Shepard&nbsp;is a senior sociology major minoring in criminal justice at FHSU. She is also a research assistant at CEVGV and will serve as the post-graduate committee chair.</li><li>Schuyler Coates&nbsp;is the director of development at the FHSU Foundation.</li><li>Thomas Powell&nbsp;is the new Robbins Banking Institute director at FHSU and the board president of Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services, a local victim advocacy organization serving northwest Kansas.</li>

The visit includes activities to engage with, listen to and learn from Kansans in Colby and the Thomas County region.
