Now in its 27th year, Hays Arts Council Famous Figures is a living history and performance project open to fifth-grade students in Ellis County public and private schools.

It involves a short performance as a favorite person (living or deceased) from the present through the distant past. The project promotes the use of research skills, awareness and appreciation of the qualities of a positive role model, thinking and writing in a creative manner, and developing acting and public speaking skills. 🎥  Ellis County fifth-graders portray Famous Figures during annual event

Fort Hays State University proudly announced its 2023 commencement award recipients during a press conference in the Memorial Union Tuesday morning. The three highly coveted annual awards recognize outstanding efforts and achievements of FHSU students and faculty.

The Torch Award was presented to Emily Reitz as the outstanding graduating senior, and the Lighthouse Award was presented to Diane Nuñez as the outstanding graduate student.

Dr. Ziwei Qi, assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, was awarded the Pilot Award as the outstanding faculty member.

Emily Reitz, Longmont, Colo., received the Torch Award as the outstanding graduating senior of the class of 2023 at Fort Hays State University. A passionate learner and athlete, Reitz received the award for her years of commitment to life on and off the soccer field. Reitz came to Fort Hays State to study health and human performance, aspiring to become a physical therapist.

Reitz showed early academic promise as a recipient of the Presidential Award of Distinction, a four-year renewable academically based scholarship offered to freshmen at FHSU. As she grew through her program and as a starter on the soccer field, Reitz earned numerous accolades athletically and academically.

One of Reitz’s nominators says, “Whether in the classroom, on the soccer field, or in the community, Ms. Reitz was a leader her fellow students could look up to.”

Reitz actively participated in several on-campus student organizations, including the Pre-Physical Therapy Club as president, as a Phi Epsilon Kappa (PEK) honors fraternity member, and as a member of the FHSU Honors Society. Reitz graduated from Fort Hays State Summa Cum Laude in December 2022 with a 4.0 GPA. She plans to pursue her doctorate at Creighton University in Omaha this fall and looks forward to helping others in the field she will dedicate her life.

“I can confidently say that this school will forever have a place in my heart,” commented Reitz. “How lucky am I to be a part of the Fort Hays State University family.”

Diane Nuñez, Topeka, was honored with the Lighthouse Award as the outstanding graduate student of the academic year. As the first to attend college and graduate school in her family, Nuñez recognizes the vital role of gaining an education. Many geosciences faculty and students appreciate Nuñez’s positive and enthusiastic presence in the classroom as a student and graduate teaching assistant.

She has taught three courses with two sections each semester while maintaining a high GPA. Her research, willingness to participate, and leadership in the classroom as a graduate teaching assistant gained the attention and praise of faculty in her academic area.

One nominator wrote, “As a student, Diane is first to talk and the first to help classmates grasp difficult concepts. The time and commitment she puts into her work and the courses she teaches are only matched by other faculty.”

In addition to her full schedule as a graduate teaching assistant, Nuñez presented numerous research posters at local and international conferences and served as president of the Sternberg Geosciences Club, among many other academic pursuits. Nuñez hopes to keep the momentum of her undergraduate and graduate studies going as she pursues her doctoral degree at one of three universities that have offered her a fully funded opportunity.

Through tears, Nuñez thanked Fort Hays State University for all the life-changing opportunities that she has received and all of the faculty members who have consistently believed in Nuñez and her work.

Her nominator said Dr. Z instilled self-confidence and belief in attaining their professional goals. They also applauded her adaptability in presenting information to suit diverse learners.

Interim Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Daniel Blankenship, echoed the nominating students’ sentiments.

“Dr. Z uses innovative approaches masterfully to reach students with hands-on learning approaches while modifying her teaching techniques successfully to different student learning styles,” Blankenship said.

Her work as a teacher-scholar includes instructing an array of undergraduate and graduate courses and collaborating with community members to provide students with valuable service-learning opportunities.

Her interdisciplinary research with communication studies associate professor Dr. Hsin-Yen Yang established the Center for Empowering Victims of Gender-Based Violence on the FHSU campus. A game-changer for rural Kansans, the center provides critical information and long-term support to survivors of gender-based violence.

Dr. Z is also a prolific author of several peer-reviewed journal pieces, a well-known presenter, and an inclusive and dedicated instructor.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Z. “I aim to be better every day, and I’m grateful to be at a university where students continually strive for their best and faculty and staff members support others along the way.”

Fort Hays State faculty and staff nominate Torch Award and Lighthouse Award candidates based on classroom excellence; leadership; participation in campus, community, or national organizations; and student, civic, or research activities. Nominees are May 2023 graduating seniors or students who graduated in December 2022. Awardees are selected by a committee of FHSU faculty and staff from a pool of nominated students.

Pilot Award candidates are nominated by graduating seniors based on classroom excellence, ongoing research, and service activities.

Fort Hays State announces 2023 commencement award recipients

The first Wheat Rx field day will be offered from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.&nbsp;Thursday, May 25 at the Agricultural Research Center in Hays, 1232 240th Ave.

This is a collaboration between K-State Research &amp; Extension and the Kansas Wheat Commission.

Growers and anyone interested will have the opportunity to see hands-on the most updated research on growing high-yield, high-quality, economically feasible wheat.

Crop walks include breeding nurseries, long-term fertility and tillage experiments, improved agronomy management and disease control trials, finishing up with an inside talk about recent economics of wheat production.

Attendance is free but registration is requested at <a href="https://kswheat.com/events/wheat-rx-hays">https://kswheat.com/events/wheat-rx-hays</a> for headcount a light breakfast and a lunch meal will be provided.

MANHATTAN — A statewide student entrepreneurship competition featuring 77 high school and five community college teams from across the state has awarded entrepreneurial-minded students $75,000 in prize money.

The 10th annual Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge gave students from around the state experience in the process of making a business proposal. The event was organized by Kansas State University's 

Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship. The Kansas Masonic Foundation sponsored the event, which was also supported by Network Kansas.

"I was blown away by the maturity and poise of all of the students, especially at the high school level, and I was particularly impressed with the innovative ideas on display," said Robert Nelson, president of the Kansas Masonic Foundation. "We see this event as an opportunity for the Kansas Masons to extend our charitable mission to help young people build businesses that are going to help the state's economy and be beneficial to all Kansans and Kansas communities."

Prior to the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge, many of the teams competed in a local-level competition series hosted by Network Kansas known as the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge. The winning team from each of the 56 local competitions automatically qualified for a spot in the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge. All qualifying teams received $700.

The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge saw teams compete in three events: a mock boardroom session, a trade show and a trading card game to test the students' entrepreneurial mindset. In the mock boardroom, judges reviewed each team's executive summary and had 10 minutes with each team to ask questions about their business. The judges' scores were used to determine winners in the different competition divisions. In the tradeshow event, students showcased their products and services to guests at the competition, and then the guests voted for their favorite ideas.

"This event is an opportunity to showcase the tremendous entrepreneurial talent we have in the state of Kansas," said Chad Jackson, director of the Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship. "The real-world experience of pitching a business in front of the type of business experts we have on our panel is invaluable to these students and provides real-world feedback and support to launch companies within our state."

The following high school students won the top prize of $3,000 in the competition:

K-State College of Business Administration awards $75,000 to student entrepreneurs

They waited ‘til the midnight hour, almost, it was the evening of the final day of the 2023 legislative session when lawmakers compromised on school funding and school choice voucher bills.

Republicans, Democrats, legislators from rural counties, and urbanites from up-scale northeast suburbs had been arguing almost non-stop since January.&nbsp;

Since no group is happy with the Friday outcome, the closing bill SB113&nbsp;appears to be a true compromise.

The bill proves some sense of rational lawmaking prevailed and it will go forward for the governor’s approval or veto.

Fortunately, SB113&nbsp;continues the court-required education spending plan at S6.4 billion for the next two years but doesn’t include an additional $72 million for special education to meet the state’s statutory requirements.

Gone is the previous legislative proposal to award about $5,000 from the public school budget to current private school students who’ve never attended public school.

&nbsp;Gone is the proposal to give $1,000 to each public school student next year for educational support such as tutoring or piano lessons.

Gone are the most egregious school choice schemes—Education Savings Accounts.&nbsp; This proposal would have awarded about $5,000 of taxpayer funds for any public school student to attend private school, for homeschooling or to spend on academic learning services—all without adequate oversight or evaluation. Also gone is the ESA plan’s most recent iteration that would have awarded $5,000 vouchers to individual students but only those in the 10 most populous Kansas counties.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The compromise bill, however, does expand&nbsp;school choice through the state’s single existing school choice program originally designed as scholarships for low-income, low-performing students.

The 2023 bill would extend scholarship opportunities to students whose families earn up to 250 percent of the federal poverty level, currently $69,375 for a family of four.&nbsp; Recipients would be eligible for up to $8,000 per year to attend private schools that are accredited or are “working toward accreditation.”&nbsp;

The scholarships are financed by individual and corporate donations that would give a 75 percent tax credit for donations up to $500,000 per year with fund disbursements capped at $10 million per year.

School choice supporters can claim compromise benefits because more Kansas students will have the opportunity to finance private schooling at least partially.&nbsp;

School advocates gave up fully funding special education and accepted tax credit funding but can claim compromise benefits because ESA vouchers, the greatest threat to free public education for all, were averted.&nbsp;

Tax credit scholarships drain taxpayer dollars indirectly because they diminish the larger, general fund. ESAs pull taxpayer dollars directly from budgeted school funds and thus weaken rural and small-town schools as well as fragment the education experience into multiple for-profit, ideological and religious segments that weakens the capability for citizenship instruction, a central mission of public schools.

As the single unifying institution of Kansas’ increasingly diverse population, safeguarding our local schools is vital.

It’s unfortunate that so much time was wasted in quarrels over school choice when it could have been devoted to important school needs like safety and security for students and teachers or ensuring all Kansas students have learning technology and internet access at home and school or increasing student achievement.&nbsp;

Nevertheless, with the session behind us, we should respect our lawmakers’ passion and acknowledge their ability to compromise, though long overdue.&nbsp; As has been often said, “better late than never.”

GOVE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Friday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 GMC passenger vehicle driven by Oscar H. Chavez Adame, 38, Dodge City, was southbound on County Road 22 one mile south of Gove County I Road.

The driver missed the curve and rolled into the field.

EMS transported passengers 40-year-old&nbsp; Pedro I.&nbsp;Delgado Contreras and 26-year-old Andres&nbsp;Delgado both of Ness City to the Lane County Hospital. Chavez Adame was not injured. Delgado was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

2 Kansas men injured after vehicle rolls into field

SHERIDAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 10:30a.m. Friday in Sheridan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by 18-year-old Devin C. Powell of Dodge City was northbound on Kansas 23 approximately 14 miles south of U.S. 24.

The vehicle left the roadway to the right, vaulted over a field entrance, continued northeast, entered a field, made a sharp right turn and rolled.

EMS transported Powell to Swedish Medical Center in Denver and a passenger Eldon M.&nbsp; Leighty, 18, Lakin, to the Sheridan County Hospital. Powell was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Jaime L. Budde, 40, Scott City, was northbound on U.S. 83 eight and one half miles south of Oakley.

The semi rear-ended a 2023 Freightliner semi driven by Douglas L. Gibson, 55, Greensboro, North Carolina, who slowed when a camper&nbsp; hauling a passenger car moved out in front of the vehicle.

A tornado was also reported just before 9 p.m. approximately 9.5 miles east-northeast of Dighton, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City. 

The storms dropped hail and heavy rain in that area, with 3.16 inches of rain falling six miles southwest of Utica. Flood warnings were also issued for the area.

The major activity stayed west and south of Hays.&nbsp;

According to the K-State Agricultural Research Center, Hays received 0.25 inch of rain.

Although human trafficking is illegal in every country in the world, it is the fastest-growing&nbsp;criminal industry, worth more than $152 billion a year.

Margaret Nacke, a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, spoke about human trafficking Wednesday night to a group in Victoria.&nbsp;

Nacke founded <a href="https://sistersagainsttrafficking.org/">U S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking</a> 10 years ago. The faith-based national network offers education, supports access to survivor services and engages in advocacy to end modern-day slavery.&nbsp;

Nacke said Americans like to think of slavery as a problem that happens over there in other countries, but human trafficking is happening in the United States and even in our small, rural communities.

"They are real slaves by definition," she said. "People forced to work without pay and unable to escape. They are trafficked in brothels, factories, rest stops, hotels and they are women and children.

"Despite real progress, slavery often remains hidden."

In American history, slaves were advertised on posters in taverns. Today traffickers use the internet and social media to sell people.

An estimated 100,000 children are commercially sexually exploited annually in the U.S. That number could be as high as 300,000.

Children as young as 8 and 9 are being forced into pornography and the sex trade.

In the United States, 82 percent of the human trafficking is sex trafficking. Ninety-eight percent of those who are trafficked are women and girls, although Nacke said there's been a steady increase in the number of men and boys who are being sex trafficked.

Trafficked victims can be anyone. They can come from "good homes" and wealthy families, she said.

A judge from Colorado told her the story of how his father, who was a doctor, abused him from the time he was a boy and then sold him to others for sex.

Grooming is a significant factor in luring girls and boys into the sex trade. Social media is often used to do that. Runaways, foster children, children who have been abused, individuals who suffer from drug addiction, LGBTQ youth and individuals in poverty are more vulnerable, she said.

Interstates, including I-70 and I-80, are shipping lanes for traffickers.

The group Wednesday talked about the need for parents, grandparents, teachers, doctors, emergency room personnel, hairdressers and even dentists to be aware of how to spot signs of trafficking.

Via Christi Health offered some of those red flags in handouts provided at the lecture. • Has few or no personal possessions. • Suddenly has expensive items with no means to pay for them • Has a much older girlfriend or boyfriend • Carrying large amounts of cash • Calls significant other daddy • School-age but not in school • Shows signs of physical or sexual abuse • Has tattoos that say "daddy" or "property of ..." • Sexually transmitted diseases • Malnutrition • Lack of health care • Clothing inconsistent with the weather • Is accompanied by a controlling person • Exhibits fear and nervousness and avoids eye contact • Does not control passport, ID or other personal documents • Hyper-vigilance • Is not in control of their own money

Once a person is in the sex trade, life can be brutal and short. Nacke said her organization is helping a woman whose pimp pulled out all her top teeth as a punishment for trying to run away.

Mail-order brides or forced marriages are other forms of slavery.&nbsp;Nacke said her organization was contacted about a citizen from another country bringing a child bride onto a U.S. university campus. The organization wasn't able to help the girl because the man had legally married her in his home country.

Nacke said minors who have been forced into the sex trade are not criminals, although they were traditionally treated as such by the U.S. justice system.

The pimps and the customers are the criminals, she said.

"Just like with any product, if you don't have buyers, the product closes out. That is not happening as far as buying people," she said.

Nacke said she hopes more families will talk about this issue with the men in boys. She also said she would like to see more research on why men, typically 40 to 60, married with children and college educated, chose to buy women and girls for sex.

Labor trafficking is even more common than sex trafficking, and it is occurring in the United States. Minor immigrants desperate to earn money to help support their parents come to America and are put to work in dangerous jobs.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/05d62af3-339b-4741-b2f0-c62ae4cbbe49">The U.S. Department of Labor recently found children working in meat processing plants in southwest Kansas.</a>

Every day, Americans use products and consume foods that are produced by child laborers in other countries. These products can include coffee, chocolate, rice, fish, fresh produce, gold jewelry and athletic shoes.&nbsp;

Nacke encouraged people to research where and by whom the products they buy are made. They also can choose fair-trade products.

If you suspect abuse or trafficking, call 911. If you are a victim of sex trafficking or are seeking help for someone who is, you can access help through Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services in northwest Kansas.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostAlthough human trafficking is illegal in every country in the world, it is the fastest-growing&nbsp;criminal industry, worth more than $152 billion a year.Margaret Nacke, a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, spoke about human trafficking Wednesday night to a group in Victoria.&nbsp;Nacke founded <a href="https://sistersagainsttrafficking.org/">U S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking</a> 10 years ago. The faith-based national network offers education, supports access to survivor services and engages in advocacy to end modern-day slavery.&nbsp;Nacke said Americans like to think of slavery as a problem that happens over there in other countries, but human trafficking is happening in the United States and even in our small, rural communities."They are real slaves by definition," she said. "People forced to work without pay and unable to escape. They are trafficked in brothels, factories, rest stops, hotels and they are women and children."Despite real progress, slavery often remains hidden."In American history, slaves were advertised on posters in taverns. Today traffickers use the internet and social media to sell people.An estimated 100,000 children are commercially sexually exploited annually in the U.S. That number could be as high as 300,000.Children as young as 8 and 9 are being forced into pornography and the sex trade.In the United States, 82 percent of the human trafficking is sex trafficking. Ninety-eight percent of those who are trafficked are women and girls, although Nacke said there's been a steady increase in the number of men and boys who are being sex trafficked.Trafficked victims can be anyone. They can come from "good homes" and wealthy families, she said.<figure>

 </figure>A judge from Colorado told her the story of how his father, who was a doctor, abused him from the time he was a boy and then sold him to others for sex.Grooming is a significant factor in luring girls and boys into the sex trade. Social media is often used to do that. Runaways, foster children, children who have been abused, individuals who suffer from drug addiction, LGBTQ youth and individuals in poverty are more vulnerable, she said.Interstates, including I-70 and I-80, are shipping lanes for traffickers.The group Wednesday talked about the need for parents, grandparents, teachers, doctors, emergency room personnel, hairdressers and even dentists to be aware of how to spot signs of trafficking. <h2>Warning signs</h2>Via Christi Health offered some of those red flags in handouts provided at the lecture. • Has few or no personal possessions. • Suddenly has expensive items with no means to pay for them • Has a much older girlfriend or boyfriend • Carrying large amounts of cash • Calls significant other daddy • School-age but not in school • Shows signs of physical or sexual abuse • Has tattoos that say "daddy" or "property of ..." • Sexually transmitted diseases • Malnutrition • Lack of health care • Clothing inconsistent with the weather • Is accompanied by a controlling person • Exhibits fear and nervousness and avoids eye contact • Does not control passport, ID or other personal documents • Hyper-vigilance • Is not in control of their own moneyOnce a person is in the sex trade, life can be brutal and short. Nacke said her organization is helping a woman whose pimp pulled out all her top teeth as a punishment for trying to run away.Mail-order brides or forced marriages are other forms of slavery.&nbsp;Nacke said her organization was contacted about a citizen from another country bringing a child bride onto a U.S. university campus. The organization wasn't able to help the girl because the man had legally married her in his home country.Nacke said minors who have been forced into the sex trade are not criminals, although they were traditionally treated as such by the U.S. justice system.The pimps and the customers are the criminals, she said."Just like with any product, if you don't have buyers, the product closes out. That is not happening as far as buying people," she said.Nacke said she hopes more families will talk about this issue with the men in boys. She also said she would like to see more research on why men, typically 40 to 60, married with children and college educated, chose to buy women and girls for sex.Labor trafficking is even more common than sex trafficking, and it is occurring in the United States. Minor immigrants desperate to earn money to help support their parents come to America and are put to work in dangerous jobs.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/05d62af3-339b-4741-b2f0-c62ae4cbbe49">The U.S. Department of Labor recently found children working in meat processing plants in southwest Kansas.</a>Every day, Americans use products and consume foods that are produced by child laborers in other countries. These products can include coffee, chocolate, rice, fish, fresh produce, gold jewelry and athletic shoes.&nbsp;Nacke encouraged people to research where and by whom the products they buy are made. They also can choose fair-trade products.<h2>How to get help</h2>If you suspect abuse or trafficking, call 911. Hays student wins 1st place in Kansas Masonic Foundation Essay Contest

Jacie Roth has always had a sweet tooth and a passion for baking, so when she and her mother decided to launch a homemade treats business,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087339709185&amp;mibextid=LQQJ4d" target="_blank">161 Candy</a>, she had no idea it would lead to future learning opportunities.

Roth graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 2021 and joined the Barton Community College family as a freshman the following fall, and she has enrolled in several business-related courses. However, there are two that she attributes much of her success to, Introduction to Business and Marketing, both taught by Business Computer Management Instructor Deanna Heier. She was invited to participate in the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge (KEC) hosted by Kansas State University (KSU) through these classes.

Heier said she immediately thought of Jacie when she heard about the KEC. “Jacie is a real leader in class and has so much initiative to really reach for her dreams and work really hard to achieve them,” she said.

Throughout the business and marketing courses, Roth was tasked with developing a business and marketing plan for a real or fake business.

“I chose to refine 161 Candy within these projects, and the KEC seemed to fit right in with the work I was currently doing in my classes,” she said. “I felt that this competition was a great opportunity for me to showcase the business we have created and gain more publicity for our business as well.”

Roth submitted an executive summary and an ‘elevator’ pitch video. This submission secured her a spot as a finalist in the KEC. On April 20,&nbsp;Roth traveled to Manhattan to compete in the live competition on the KSU campus. The live competition consisted of a tradeshow competition where she would explain her business proposal to the attendees, mostly made up of KSU students, staff, faculty, and community members, who would then vote for their favorite businesses. She also presented her business and marketing plan for 161 Candy to a panel of KEC judges.

“I put countless hours into preparation for the competition by creating several professional presentation boards, purchasing packaging supplies that fit the event theme, printing hundreds of pictures, designing a product scrapbook, preparing a speech, figuring out possible table layouts, and making delicious treats to be displayed and given to judges,” she said.

Out of the six finalists in the college division, 161 Candy took home first place in both the tradeshow and the KEC-judged competitions. Roth won a total of $4,000 that she will use toward funding new kitchen equipment for her business expansion.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity that was presented to me,” she said. “I am very proud of all the hard work that I put in to make this all possible.”

Heier said it was exciting to see Roth implement what she learned in the classroom to take her business to the next level. “Jacie’s dedication and passion for her business is apparent and paid off during her competition this spring,” she said. “I am very proud of her for all her accomplishments and very excited to see how her business will grow.”

Phillipsburg grad and BCC student wins $4,000 in entrepreneurship competition   

There were smiles all around at the inaugural STEM Harvest event in downtown Hays Saturday.

STEM Harvest is a local non-profit organization and is the brainchild of Dallas and Dacia Haselhorst. This was the first of many activities planned for the organization and it allowed them to showcase the repurposed, beautifully renovated space at 507 Main aimed at STEM&nbsp;(science, technology, engineering and math) education.

Made possible by the “To Infinity and Beyond” grant from NetWorked for Change, the event offered a range of station-based activities, including 3D printing, electronics and soldering, technology deconstruction, and coding.

 </figure>At the electronics and soldering station, participants learned how to build simple circuits and safely solder components.The technology deconstruction station allowed participants to take apart old laptops and explore the inner workings of various devices.Finally, the coding station provided an opportunity for participants to learn programming basics and see how that code translated to the real world by flying a drone.Volunteers ran the stations, providing valuable knowledge and experience to the participants.<figure>

 </figure>Several volunteers traveled in from out of town to lend a hand while many others came from local businesses and Fort Hays State University student organizations, such as FHSU STEM Education and FHSU Cybersecurity Club.STEM Harvest sponsors for the event were Networked for Change, TreeTop Security, SANS Technology Institute, Grow Hays, Heartland Community Foundation and the Beach Family Foundation. Refreshments, snacks, and lunch were provided by local businesses, including Breathe Coffee House, Daylight Donuts, and Little Dinero Pizzeria. “This was a small sliver of the possibilities and what we have in mind," Dallas Haselhorst said. "The space and idea have been years in the making so while it has been exhausting to get to this point, the success of this single event fuels us to continue forward with our vision.” Grants have been hard to come by for the organization with more than 80 percent of the efforts thus far being self-funded.The husband and wife team said those statistics do not include time volunteered by family and friends who also believed in the STEM Harvest vision.“It’s been frustrating, although we are hopeful this helps others better understand the concept and need for these valuable learning opportunities," Dallas&nbsp;Haselhorst said."I’m not overselling it when I say this has the potential to be transformative for the community and region for many years to come.
