Today and Thanksgiving Day, the forecast calls for sunny skies and highs in the 40s.

However, after a high of 50 on Friday, a cold front is forecast to move in with a 20 percent chance of showers after midnight in Hays.

The National Weather Service calls for a chance of rain and snow showers before noon Saturday, and then a slight chance of snow showers. The high is forecast to be near 43, with wind. The chance of precipitation is 30%.

The forecast calls for a 20% chance of snow showers on Sunday, a 30% chance of snow showers on Sunday night, and a 20% chance of snow showers on Monday, with a high of 33.

The Kansas Department of Transportation issued the following press release today about the upcoming weather and travel precautions.

Early weather forecasts from different weather services are showing the possibility of inclement weather affecting parts of Kansas as well as several northern and western states this holiday weekend.

If inclement weather does impact the highways, the Kansas Department of Transportation is ready to treat roadways as needed. KDOT employees have been preparing since September: Salt, sand and brine materials have been ordered, trucks and other equipment have undergone preventive maintenance and crews have completed training courses.

“Whatever the obstacle, KDOT crew members work together and find a way to get the job done,” said Director of Field Operations Ron Hall. “Our crews always do their best to serve the public in their efforts to clear the highways.”

Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed&nbsp;shared a reminder for all travelers: “Check on road conditions and weather forecasts in advance and possibly delay travel plans. It’s important to stay informed, plan ahead and travel safe.”

Resources and safety reminders for motorists:

Kansas maintains about 9,500 miles of highways, including more than 25,000 total lane and ramp miles. Clearing snow from these highways takes time, especially while the snow is still falling.

Secretary Reed emphasized the importance of safety for the crews working to keep roads open.

“KDOT employees work challenging 12-hour shifts to remove snow and ice from the highways,” said Secretary Reed. “Don’t drive in their blind spots and give them space to work so they can focus on the job.”

The free Community Thanksgiving Feast, sponsored by the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance (ECMA), will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 200 Main St., Hays.

No reservations are required; the meal is first-come, first-served. There will be no individual carry-out meals. Cheryl Glassman, ECMA president, said that 530 meals have been ordered from the caterer; 225 of those meals will go to Meals on Wheels clients and residents of local shelters and group homes.

On the menu will be roasted turkey, dressing, garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, a roll, drink, and dessert.

The Union Catering Co. is catering the main meal. The ECMA is seeking desserts from churches and individuals. Desserts may be brought to the office of First Call for Help of Ellis County, 607 E. 13th, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, and Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Glassman said volunteers are needed at the dinner, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, to help with set-up, serving plates, slicing pies, cleaning up, and other duties. Volunteers may sign up by calling First Call for Help at 785-623-2800.

One familiar aspect of the dinner will be the grocery give-away. Every household in attendance who wants one will receive a free sack of groceries, Glassman said. One feature that will be new this year is each sack will contain recipe cards featuring the food items in the sack. Last year around 200 sacks were distributed.

Glassman said the ECMA sponsors the free community meal each Thanksgiving because “Thanksgiving is a time for gathering--gathering with family, gathering with community.&nbsp;There are also people who are alone for the holidays .&nbsp;. . We want people to feel welcome. All are invited.”

Tax deductible donations to help with the cost of the dinner may be sent to ECMA, P.O. Box 173, Hays, KS 67601, with proceeds to benefit the ECMA Second Mile Fund.

WICHITA — Thanksgiving and the day before are the top two days in this country for the chance of a cooking fire to happen in someone’s home.

Cooking causes an average of 158,400 home fires per year, which is 44% of all home fires in the United States.&nbsp;The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas offers safety steps everyone can follow if they will be preparing their family’s Thanksgiving feast.

“Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, home fire injuries and the second leading cause of home fire deaths,” said Jane Blocher, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Greater Kansas. “Most happen because people leave cooking food unattended. Red Cross offers steps to help avoid a Thanksgiving cooking fire

Cathleen Kroeger of Ellis is looking for children to enroll in her Cat's Child Care in Ellis.

Kroeger, 38, became a child care provider in 2020. She was working as a children's librarian at the Hays Public Library, but was facing the challenge of enrolling three of her children in child care. She said that it did not seem practical at the time.

"It was pretty boring only having three kids to take care of," she said.

"Child care seemed like the perfect fit," she said. "I was able to work with kids again, having more kids to take care of and do some of the things I think are fun along with my kids."

Kroeger has six children. Her step-daughter is 12, and she also has children aged 11, 9, 7, 1, and 2 months.

Kroeger said she has always loved working with children.

She has a degree in psychology from Kansas State University and took many courses in early childhood development while working on her degree.

Although Kroerger does not have a formalized preschool curriculum, she said she focuses on developing creativity and problem-solving skills through play.

"My favorite part is when you are working with a kid, and they get it," she said. "You worked on it, worked on it, worked on it, and you've seen the kid go through all of the frustration and then getting some proficiency and then all of a sudden they get that proficiency, and they get that mastery level, and they are just so proud of themselves."

She said she tries to help the children build life skills, such as putting on their shoes or zipping their jackets.&nbsp;

Even very young children can help pick up a toy. She thanks the child and praises them for being helpful.

"I try to pick moments to tell them about things," she said. "When we are out on a walk, I'll hand them some leaves and talk about how this feels cruncky and 'Look at the color. That's brown.' They're learning things naturally.

"They're little sponges. If you engage them in conversation about things over and over throughout the whole day, they pick up a lot."

She said these daily life lessons help build kindergarten readiness. The students who leave her child care to go to kindergarten generally know their colors and have started to learn numbers and some letters.

"I don't have them sitting down doing worksheets. It's not like a curriculum or institution-type setting. It's learning through play and their own curiosity."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Being in a child care home rather than a center, Kroeger said, allows her to focus more on the individual needs and development of children.

She said she loves to take the children on field trips. They go to parks in Ellis and Hays, the swimming pool, the Sternberg Museum, the Hays and Ellis libraries, and even out of town to the zoo.

Kroeger tends to have school-age children during the summer. She asks on the parent form what types of activities the children would like to do and what their interests are.

One child was interested in the solar system. Kroeger obtained appliance boxes from the hardware store, and the children created a spaceship.

They used sidewalk chalk to draw the layers of the atmosphere, then "flew" their spaceship through the atmosphere into space.

Kroeger, who rides a motorcycle, likes to take the children on bicycle rides. She has several toddler balance bikes for the younger children.

"I have a really cute picture from one summer. I was full. I had 10 kids. There was a line of all 10 of them on the little bikes. We stopped, and they looked back at me, and I snapped the photo. I always said that was my little biker gang," she said.

On another occasion, she took a group of seven boys outside to play after the rain. They all jumped into a giant mud puddle.

"Those boys had a blast," she said. "They were covered in mud. ... I try to keep those things alive—the everyday things that you would get to do as a kid, especially some of those things as parents we don't enjoy because it makes a big mess.

"I had several parents comment at pick up, 'I'm glad they got to do that with you and not at my house,'" she said.

Kroeger also brings some of her experience from working as a librarian into her child care home, including reading books and singing songs.

Her favorite book is "Nuts: Sing and Dance in Your Polka Dot Pants" by Eric Litwin. He performed at the Hays Public Library during her tenure there, and she was able to visit with him about his books.

She attended a special training session for librarians on physical exercise, along with learning math and literacy skills, which can help children build connections between the two hemispheres of their brains and better retain these skills.

She is also certified as an instructor in noncorrosive potty training and elimination communication. She starts potty training at 18 months old in the child care. The children in her care are usually reliably potty-trained and wearing underwear by age 2.

Kroeger said her most significant challenge, at the moment, is finding children to fill her child care slots. She currently has no children enrolled. She said she has an opening for one infant in addition to older children.

Cattleman’s Café, 1230 E. 27th, Hays, will once again offer a free sit-down turkey dinner from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

No reservations or pre-orders will be taken; it is first-come, first-served until the food runs out, a news release said.

A slice of pumpkin pie will be $1. Water will come with the meal, but other drinks will be $2.99 each.

Crude oil prices hover at or near four-year lows. 

Kansas Common crude starts the week at $48.25 per barrel, after dropping $1.25 on Friday. That's the lowest posted price at CHS in McPherson since October 16. The monthly average price drops to $49.57 per barrel.&nbsp; The last time that monthly average was less than $50 was in February of 2021.

U.S. futures prices have only dipped this low four times in the last four years. At just over $58 a barrel, near-month NYMEX crude was nearly a dollar lower on the day Friday, but about half a dollar higher than a week ago. Prices were nearly half a dollar higher by lunchtime on Monday.

U.S. crude production drops slightly from last week's all-time record, but remains above 13.8 million barrels per day for a second week in a row. The Energy Information Administration reports a weekly production average of 13,834,000 barrels per day, down 28,000 daily barrels from a week ago, but good enough for second-best. The four-week average sets a new record over 13.7 million, and cumulative production so far this year is at an all-time high just under 13.5 million barrels a day.

The Energy Information Administration  reports another half million barrels added to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, now just under 411 million barrels. That's up more than 46 million barrels since refill operations resumed in April of last year at $35 a barrel less than what we sold it for three years ago.

Commercial inventories dropped by 3.4 million barrels to just over 424 million. That's about five percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

After a major adjustment last week, crude-oil exports make a major readjustment this week.&nbsp; Crude exports jumped fifty percent, more than a million barrels a day, after a similar decline last week. Exports are over four million barrels a day after dropping below three million last week. The four-week average is up five percent at just under four million daily barrels.

Crude imports increased by 729,000 barrels a day to just under six million barrels a day. The four week average is down 16 percent from a year ago.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes up up two oil rigs and two gas rigs for a US total of 554 active rigs. The breakout for horizontal rigs is up by five. The statewide tally in Wyoming is up three rigs.

The number of inactive, or "cold-stacked" drilling rigs is up by four across Kansas. The weekly Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is unchanged statewide, but down one active rig in eastern Kansas and up one west of Wichita. The total of 17 active rigs is down ten percent from a month ago and nearly 40 percent lower than a year ago. Drilling was underway on Friday on a lease in Finney County and another in Gove County.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 15 new well-completions this week, with eight in eastern Kansas and seven west of Wichita, including one each in Barton and Haskell counties.

State regulators okayed nine new drilling locations, with seven in western Kansas including two new permits in Stafford County. That's 607 new permits so far this year, compared to just over a thousand a year ago. 

The world's third-largest oil and gas company is going all in on AI. Chevron has chosen a site in West Texas for its 5,000 megawatt natural-gas powered data center, in what Bloomberg calls a new line of business to capitalize on the boom in artificial intelligence. The announcement did not identify the end-user, or put a price on the project, but the company said it expects to make a final investment decision early next year, and could begin operations the year after that.

Western sanctions against Russia are kicking in in a very big way. Reuters reports sanctions are cutting Russia's oil and gas revenue by 35 percent to just under $6.6 billion dollars in November. 

Meanwhile Bloomberg reports Russia is offering India its deepest discounts in two years. Most Indian refiners have skipped placing orders for Russian crude.

In an announcement last week, the Trump administration officially scrapped a drilling ban in the mammoth arctic landscape known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The reserve is described as 23 million acres of tundra and wetlands, roughly the size of Indiana, teeming with wildlife, and an estimated 8.7 billion barrels of crude. The new policy reverses a Biden-era rule that blocked drilling on nearly half of the reserve.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Average Kansas crude prices drop to 4-year lows

The Hays USD 489 school board accepted donations from several businesses to build a storage shed at the new high school at its meeting on Monday night.

The three companies below have combined resources to donate materials and labor to construct a 40-foot by 56-foot storage building on the Hays High School/Hays Middle School campus. &nbsp;• Leitner Buildings–donation of building framing materials • RM Custom Metals–donation of custom metal to match Hays High brick • RoofMasters Roofing and Sheet Metal–donation of construction and labor

The district will have to demolish a couple of smaller garden sheds and lay a concrete pad. The district had budgeted $200,000 for this project in its FY 2027 capital outlay budget.

The shed will be used for storage for high school and middle school athletics and activities.

Chris Hipp, assistant superintendent of business services, said, "We can't thank them enough for approaching us and then being so willing to work with us on what our vision was and to make it happen."

Several board members thanked the donors for their gifts.

"I am very grateful for the community reinvesting in the district," board member Jayme Goetz said.

Board member Ruth Ruder said, "Kudos to those three businesses for doing that. We are so grateful."

The board also approved the demolition, regrading and addition of new concrete to a portion of the staff parking lot at Hays Middle School, 2300 E. 13th, to allow for better drainage of water away from the tennis courts.

The  $53,100 bid from&nbsp;J-Corp came in under budget.

The tennis courts will be completed by the spring.

Superintendent Ron Wilson will also give a bond projects update.

He said Nabholz Construction is nearing closing in the additions for O'Loughlin&nbsp; Elementary School.

Work is nearing completion on the renovation at the former high school, 2300 13th St., to ready the building for the middle school to move into that space in January.

Hays Middle School teachers toured the school this week.

Wilson said the USD 489 Foundation delivered food donations to district families this week.

The board also recognized the Hays High School unified bowling team, which recently won a state championship.

MANHATTAN — The Thanksgiving holiday brings family, food and festivities — but it can also bring hidden hazards for pets. As kitchens fill with tempting aromas and guests come and go, Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian at Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>, is reminding pet owners to keep safety in mind during celebrations.

"Many Thanksgiving foods and decorations can pose serious risks to pets if ingested or mishandled," Nelson said.

Keep bones out of reach and do not intentionally feed bones to your pets. Bones can cause tooth damage, become a choking hazard, or lead to gastrointestinal obstructions or perforations, Nelson said. Ingesting corncobs can also result in fatal gastrointestinal complications.

When preparing food, do not feed any raw meat scraps to your pet, as these can potentially make your pet — as well as people living or interacting with them — sick.

"There are other things you can feed your pet instead of fatty foods," Nelson said. "Gravy, dark meat, ham, butter and meat drippings can lead to gastrointestinal upset and, in some cases, fatal pancreatitis. As an alternative, offer vegetables not cooked in butter, chopped apples, plain pumpkin or sweet potatoes."

Raw dough can cause bloating and alcohol poisoning. Garlic, onion, leeks and chives — often used in dressings and gravies — can destroy red blood cells in pets if ingested.

"There are a number of common foods and beverages that could be toxic to your pet if ingested," Nelson said. "Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, currants, macadamia nuts, artificial sweeteners like xylitol, and alcoholic and caffeinated beverages out of reach."

If possible, Nelson suggests using baby gates or other barriers to block your pet's access to the kitchen or food preparation areas to prevent them from getting into unsupervised food. Make sure garbage is placed in closed, pet-proof containers and kept out of reach.

Be sure to keep baking twine and foil out of reach and in the garbage as well, as they can also cause GI obstruction, Nelson said, and the lingering scent of food on them makes them a temptation for your pet.

"When decorating your home, be mindful of things that could be harmful to pets," Nelson said. "Consider using battery-operated candles, as burning candles pose a risk of burns to your pet and, if tipped over, could lead to a house fire."

If decorating with floral arrangements, be aware of what flowers are included. Lilies can be deadly to cats and harmful to dogs, depending on the species, Nelson said. Any part of the lily — including pollen — is toxic to cats, she said.

"It's also important to know if guests make your pet nervous," Nelson said. "If they do, put the pet in a closed room away from guests with something to distract them, such as a toy or food puzzle. Be sure to watch the doors as guests arrive and leave so your pet doesn't escape and become lost."

Some pets may need anxiety medication while guests are visiting, so Nelson suggests speaking with your veterinarian for the best recommendations. It's also a good idea to have your pet microchipped and include ID tags on their collar in case they wander off. Make sure your contact information is up to date.

Ingesting corncobs can also result in fatal gastrointestinal complications.When preparing food, do not feed any raw meat scraps to your pet, as these can potentially make your pet — as well as people living or interacting with them — sick."There are other things you can feed your pet instead of fatty foods," Nelson said. "Gravy, dark meat, ham, butter and meat drippings can lead to gastrointestinal upset and, in some cases, fatal pancreatitis. As an alternative, offer vegetables not cooked in butter, chopped apples, plain pumpkin or sweet potatoes."Raw dough can cause bloating and alcohol poisoning. Garlic, onion, leeks and chives — often used in dressings and gravies — can destroy red blood cells in pets if ingested."There are a number of common foods and beverages that could be toxic to your pet if ingested," Nelson said. "Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, currants, macadamia nuts, artificial sweeteners like xylitol, and alcoholic and caffeinated beverages out of reach."If possible, Nelson suggests using baby gates or other barriers to block your pet's access to the kitchen or food preparation areas to prevent them from getting into unsupervised food. Make sure garbage is placed in closed, pet-proof containers and kept out of reach.Be sure to keep baking twine and foil out of reach and in the garbage as well, as they can also cause GI obstruction, Nelson said, and the lingering scent of food on them makes them a temptation for your pet."When decorating your home, be mindful of things that could be harmful to pets," Nelson said. "Consider using battery-operated candles, as burning candles pose a risk of burns to your pet and, if tipped over, could lead to a house fire."If decorating with floral arrangements, be aware of what flowers are included. Lilies can be deadly to cats and harmful to dogs, depending on the species, Nelson said. Any part of the lily — including pollen — is toxic to cats, she said."It's also important to know if guests make your pet nervous," Nelson said. "If they do, put the pet in a closed room away from guests with something to distract them, such as a toy or food puzzle. Be sure to watch the doors as guests arrive and leave so your pet doesn't escape and become lost."Some pets may need anxiety medication while guests are visiting, so Nelson suggests speaking with your veterinarian for the best recommendations. It's also a good idea to have your pet microchipped and include ID tags on their collar in case they wander off. Make sure your contact information is up to date.If you suspect your pet has ingested something dangerous, contact your veterinarian immediately or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 for guidance.

K-State veterinarian shares Thanksgiving pet safety reminders

The Hays Symphony Orchestra invites the community to “a night of orchestral carols and holiday cheer” at its annual “ringing in” of the holiday season.

The free “Poinsettia Pops Concert” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center. Ken Windholz, who teaches in the Psychology Department at Fort Hays State University, will be the special guest emcee.

“The symphony this year is partnering with the local chapter of Toys For Tots&nbsp;to bring children in need across Ellis County the joy of receiving gifts this holiday season,” the symphony’s website said.

“Please consider bringing new toys or other gifts,&nbsp;such as books, board/card games, arts and crafts kits, sports equipment, and personal items (hairbrushes, makeup, hair accessories, etc.) to be dropped off in the lobby” at the concert, the website said.

Among the traditional pieces scheduled to be performed are “Carol of the Bells,” “Sleigh Ride,” and “Greensleeves.”

The symphony is directed by Ben Cline, professor of cello and bass and chair of the Music and Theatre Department at FHSU. A post-concert reception is being sponsored by Great Plains Dermatology.

Hays has received 1.48 inches in the month of November, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.

The Eagle Media Center received .26 inches of rain as of 6 a.m.

Hays has received 26.11 inches of moisture year-to-date.

On average, Hays receives .84 inches of rain in November and 23.34 inches of moisture year-to-date by the end of November.

The forecast for today is a slight chance of showers, with a high of 54 and a low of 38. Sunny skies are expected this week, including Thanksgiving Day, with highs remaining in the 40s.

The Hays school board will consider accepting donations from several businesses to build a storage shed at the new high school.

The three companies below have combined resources to offer a generation donation of the materials and labor to construct a 40-foot by 56-foot storage building on the Hays High School/Hays Middle School campus. &nbsp; • Leitner Buildings–donation of building framing materials • RM Custom Metals–donation of custom metal to match Hays High brick • RoofMasters Roofing and Sheet Metal–donation of construction and labor

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Hays city commissioners will meet on Tuesday rather than the usual Thursday.

Agenda items relate to new housing development in west Hays and to infrastructure for potential commercial and residential development in east Hays.

Jesse Rohr, public works director, will present recommendations to vacate DK Ranch Addition and a portion of Country Club Estates Sixth Addition for consideration of the Smoky Hill Plains Addition final plat. The project proposal also requires the deannexation of DK Ranch and the annexation of Smoky Hill Plains Addition to streamline the property's legal description.

Interstate 70 Exit 161 Infrastructure&nbsp;Bid&nbsp;

A bid for infrastructure installation at Interstate 70, Exit 161, on 90 acres of city-owned property will be presented by Tom Howie, project manager. Smoky Hills, LLC, Salina, has the low bid of $3.9 million for&nbsp;water, sewer and street infrastructure.

Rohr will also present recommendations for street maintenance projects next year.&nbsp;

The special highway budget provides $1,089,245 for&nbsp;seal coat, polypatch, major rehabilitation (street and concrete alley), pavement markings, curb and brick repair, sidewalk rebate program, and in-house crack seal and asphalt/concrete repair.
