Nobody ever expects to be a victim of a natural disaster.

However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that since 1980, the United States has sustained 355 weather and climate disasters at an average expense of $57.8 billion per year.

Unfortunately, we can’t change the weather, but we can keep ourselves safe and prepare for disaster.

Kansas State University Family Resource Management Specialist, Elizabeth Kiss, shares more:

“One of the best things to do is to start or add to what’s called a ‘Grab and Go’ box,” Kiss says. “If bad weather is approaching…and you need to evacuate your house, just take the box with you and go, and you’ll have the things you need to recover from any eventual loss.”

Items that should be stored in a Grab and Go box, according to Kiss, include originals or paper copies of such items as:

· Insurance policies, particularly property insurance.

Then, consider some personal items such as photos, letters and various keepsakes, and even a small amount of money. The box should be waterproof and/or fireproof, Kiss said.

“We have become very dependent on things being online, but depending on the severity of any sort of emergency, we may be able to recover faster with paper copies,” Kiss said. “We just don’t know.”

Preparing a household inventory and building a Grab and Go box may seem daunting, but Kiss says it begins by doing just a little bit at a time.

“In terms of the household inventory, we recommend starting with one room, or even one part of a room at a time,” she said.

“Something is better than nothing. You can even videotape documents with your phone these days, or take pictures…that’s a start. You do need to have some documentation about when things were purchased and what their value was, but video or pictures is a start. Then be sure you take your documentation from your phone and store it in a way electronically that you can access it if something were to happen to your phone.”

Kiss also suggests talking with insurance agents to make sure you’re adequately covered for loss to the home and personal property; and consider storing copies of your important documents off-site – such as in the home of a trusted friend or relative.

“Much of the Grab N Go Box is records that you would be keeping anyway,” Kiss said. “It’s a form of record keeping, and it’s just being proactive to have it in one place in case of an emergency.”

WINKEL: Grab ‘N Go, be prepared for severe weather

Hays Mayor Shaun Musil is pleased to announce that the City of Hays has been named the recipient of a Build Kansas grant in the amount of $12.5 million for the project to develop a long-term water supply on its property in Edwards County. 

Hays is undertaking the project jointly with the City of Russell which co-owns the property. The project will result in a sustainable supply of water that is estimated to last Hays and Russell for 50 years or longer. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The project is critical to the future survival of Hays and Russell as both cities have water sources that are inadequate to serve their current residents and very susceptible to the effects of drought. 

The City of Hays has submitted an application for $50 million in BRIC (Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities) funding through FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). The Build Kansas grant will provide matching funds for the BRIC grant if Hays is awarded.

Hays receives $12.5M Build Kansas grant for R9 water supply project

A little more moisture for Hays from Sunday into Monday morning at 8 a.m.

The official measurement at the K-State Agriculture Research Center was 0.12 rain.

The average amount of moisture in Hays through the end of May is 7.92 inches. As of May 13, Hays has received 4.49 inches for the year.&nbsp;

A little rain for Hays; still 3.5 inches behind average for the year

Tryyaki Asian Cuisine in Hays now offers bubble teas, milk teas, smoothies and new entrees.

Tryyaki opened in Hays eight years ago and is owned by Eric and Ivory Han.

Milk tea consists of tea and milk and is found in many cultures.

Boba, or bubble tea, contains tea, milk, water, sugar and tapioca pearls.

The fruit teas come in a variety of flavors like lychee and dragonfruit.

The Hans have a variety of toppings that can be added to one of the teas, including fruit pearls such as mango, strawberry, cherry, passion fruit, kiwi, lychee and peach.

All beverages come with one free topping, but you can add fruit or boba pearls for an extra 75 cents per flavor.

"With the different syrups and toppings, you can make your own flavors," Eric said.

The milk tea flavors are banana, iced mocha, honeydew, matcha green tea, Okinawa brown sugar and taro.

Taro is a root. Depending on how you prepare it, it can taste sweet, like vanilla.

Smoothies come in flavors, including mango, peach, strawberry and pina colada.

Last week, Tryyaki started offering fruit teas open to close every day.&nbsp;

The Hans hope to hire more staff to offer the full drink menu daily.

Eric and his wife have been considering expanding their menu to include milk tea for several years. Three years ago, during the Thanksgiving holiday, they traveled to Overland Park and found people in the Kansas City area enjoying milk and bubble teas.

The Hans had considered opening a separate location for the tea business but ultimately decided to integrate the concept with Tryyaki.

"Bubble tea, milk tea, and fruit tea are pretty popular in China and Taiwan," Eric said. "Just like American people like coffee, Asian people love tea."

Both Eric and Ivory are from China. They lived in Lawrence and studied at the University of Kansas before moving to Hays to open Tryyaki.

Tryyaki is a drive-through restaurant, so customers sometimes buy their drinks from other businesses. Eric said they wanted to encourage customers to buy drinks from their restaurant.

New food menu items include teriyaki (chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu) bowls, general chicken bowls, orange chicken bowls, general tofu bowls and sesame chicken bowls.

New sushi rolls include golden crunchy crab roll, golden crunchy Philly roll, golden crunchy tuna roll, golden crunchy eel roll and golden crunchy veggie roll.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We are really thankful to our Hays community. Without our community’s support, we cannot go that far," Eric Han said.

Tryyaki in Hays offers new entrees, line of boba, milk teas

The ongoing drought affects everyone in the region, but many are unaware of the steps needed to ensure the safety of water from private wells. 

A new program from K-State 105 aims to provide residents with an easy guide to “Know Your Water.” Direct mailings have recently arrived in Ellis, Hays, Victoria and all Ellis County mailboxes.

If residents use a private water well for their domestic water supply, it is recommended that they take a water sample annually to test for nitrates, E. coli bacteria and more.

“Spring is a great time to set a reminder to have your private water well tested,” said Stacie Minson, K-State watershed specialist. 

For those who are unsure about the process, Minson said the information packet mailed to residents includes recently updated K-State Research &amp; Extension Know Your Water publications on understanding and protecting your private water source.

The mailing also includes a yellow postcard to return if Ellis County residents want to have their private well tested or have a landscape irrigation system assessment conducted within the city of Hays. 

Minson said the water tests and irrigation assessment are free if the postcards are returned quickly.

Experts say that this is the perfect time of year for residents to assess how they can protect local water quality.

“Spring rains create run-off events, allowing pollutants, including excess fertilizer and pet waste, to enter our local creeks and streams, including Big Creek,” said Joe Billinger, city of Hays stormwater superintendent.

A quick reference magnet is also included. The magnet lists locations where electronic waste, household hazardous waste, recycling and compost can be taken for reuse or recycling.

It also reminds readers to use the web resources at <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/870/Water-Conservation">www.watersmarthays.com</a> to learn about water conservation rebates that help homeowners conserve local water supplies.

The Know Your Water Project is a partnership between the city of Hays, Kansas State University Big Creek and Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds, K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood Extension District, Fort Hays State Geosciences Department, Ellis County Environmental Office, city of Ellis, and city of Victoria.

SHPBS reveals winners of 2024 PBS KIDS Writers Contest

For the 17th&nbsp;consecutive year, FHSU has been recognized for its investment in programs that improve the lives of veterans and military personnel, earning the 2024-2025 Military Friendly School designation from militaryfriendly.com.

Institutions that received the designation were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 2,600 schools participated in the 2023-24 survey, with more than 500 schools earning award-level designations in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. FHSU attained the rank of Silver again this year.

“Every year, we use this survey to evaluate, improve, and better FHSU and the way we take care of our military-connected students,” said Randy Adkins, Military Admissions Advisor of FHSU Online Military-Connected Student Services.

The Military Friendly® program creates civilian opportunities for veterans and is the standard that measures an organization’s commitment, effort, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful opportunities for the military community.

The Hays USD 489 school board will meet today at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Administration Center to consider purchasing a new activity bus.

Cats of any description are fierce, efficient hunters, and feral cats, all-the-more. They do untold damage to pheasant and quail populations and kill large numbers of songbirds. By feral cats I mean cats that live totally in the wild and possibly haven’t had a domestic relative for years or even generations; NOT “Fluffy” next door that rolls around at your feet and plays hide and seek with you from a paper sack.

Feral cats have become so overpopulated in some states that over the years, hunting seasons have actually been proposed for them. Heck, when we were kids, we called feral cats RT’s, short for Running Targets. But I think I have some good ideas to actually utilize feral cats in today’s topsy-turvey society. For starters, and in light of all the recent “protests” at our nation’s colleges, how about using them for crowd control. Rioting crowds would probably react badly to snarling German Shepherds, which will soon be history anyway since the K-9 police units will probably be washed down the drain with the rest of law enforcement officers by those claiming animal cruelty. But who’s gonna’ notice a few fluffy cats rubbing against everyone’s legs. Really long-haired ones rolled in some sort of fairy-dust sleeping potion and turned loose to spread it through the crowd could have the “demonstrators” simply falling asleep where they stand. All that’s needed is to pile everyone against the curbs and traffic is restored; no buildings burned, no one shot, no historic statues that have stood there for generations torn down, and just look at the money saved on tear gas. Hopefully when the protestors all awake to see how pathetic they look on the evening news, they’ll just slink off into the shadows and be too ashamed to try it again.

Since it appears many 911 calls could soon be answered by only mental health professionals of some description who will undoubtedly be unarmed except for a clipboard and some colored markers, a few of the nastiest, old hag, feral cats can be trained to go with them when they enter whatever the new nations within our cities will call themselves by then. They can be carried in small cat size carriers or with those nifty little harnesses with a handle so they can be carted around like a lunch box. “A cat against a crowd of demonstrators?” you’re thinking. Remember,

these “demonstrators” that want the world to believe they are the toughest things since Dirty Harry are mostly snowflakes and tree huggers; they’ll urge violence against law enforcement officers and burn cities, but they won’t harm a cat. And if one does get out-of-line, that old hag, feral cat will lay them open like a fish with a couple lightning quick swipes of a paw; pretty good protection I’d say.

Those new nations set-up within our cities will probably become overrun with rodents, since none of the snowflakes or tree huggers would ever think of killing a mouse or rat. Heck, I have already read a report claiming someone released rats into one of the college “encampments.” Those rodents would soon spread out into the rest of the city, so a crew of feral cats released there could soon take care of the issue. Besides, the only food our feline mousers would be offered by residents there would probably only be vegan.

Well, there you have just a few examples of innovative ways to repurpose feral cats for today’s topsy-turvey world. I see it as a win-win-deal; a few feral cats are taken out of the wild, pet lovers are happy cause’ they weren’t killed and we hunters reap the benefits… Continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors!

Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Repurposing feral cats for today’s topsy-turvey world

WAKEENEY - The support poles for the planned new drive-in theatre screen in WaKeeney are finally in the ground.

Installation of the 106 metal sheets and their horizontal braces that make up the screen was expected to start this weekend.&nbsp;

Two buildings are to be moved onto the site south of Interstate 70 at Exit 128 in June and July.&nbsp;

"It's coming together. We're so excited," said theatre board member volunteer Lynelle Shubert.

It's a slow process. The project is in its <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/497a901e-7490-454b-91d4-34f56e8c39a3">fourth year</a>.&nbsp;

The labor is being done by volunteers or donated by professionals.

"The screen poles laid on the ground for 10 months. Linemen at Western Coop Electric and Midwest Energy donated their time and equipment to install the poles in mid-April, but of course, we weren't a priority so we had to wait until they had time."

A year ago the Trego Sky View Foundation received a $44,400 attraction development grant from&nbsp;Kansas Tourism, a division of the Kansas Department of Commerce.&nbsp;

"It shows their faith in us and how this will be good not only for WaKeeney but also northwest Kansas.

"The nearest drive-in theatres are in Kanopolis and Dodge City."&nbsp;Wichita, Kansas City and Paola are the only other remaining communities in the state with drive-ins.

Shubert said they've been building as they have the money.&nbsp;

"The big push now is to build the bank account again so that we can get the projector.

"A new one is outside our budget. We're looking at a buying used one for about $50,000."

Shubert, who is the director of WaKeeney Tourism and Travel, attended a&nbsp; Main Street America program last week in Las Vegas.

One of the sessions focused how having a theatre in a town can enhance the local economy.

"We have done the market research and this will bring Trego County increased sales tax and transient guest tax, and create seasonal jobs," Shubert wrote on the Trego Sky View Drive-in Theatre Facebook page.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"So when people say movies are dying,&nbsp; you can stay home and watch a movie, that might be true for in-house theatres. But what we're building is very different.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The tourism trend is that people want an experience. They want to go back in time and have a nostalgic experience."

Shubert said the project is on the right track even though there is a whole generation that has no concept what a drive-in movie is.

"We've had some people say they don't want their kids riding their bikes across the interstate. But this is not a 'send your kids to the movie' experience. It's a whole family experience."

One group eagerly anticipating the drive-in are high school-aged students, she said.

"They don't really have any place to go socially in WaKeeney for fun with their friends or date night and they wind up driving to Hill City or Hays."

"Once the projector is purchased, we're ready to rock and roll."

Shubert is aiming for the drive-in to be open in June 2025.

"The only thing we won't have until after the first year of operation is bathroom facilities. Once we get up and rolling we can tell people their patronage will help us buy bathrooms next season. We'll probably use portable ones until then. "&nbsp;

New WaKeeney drive-in movie theatre project slowing coming together 

MANHATTAN AND ANDOVER — The statewide&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/KEC-competition-info.html">Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge</a>&nbsp;recently awarded more than $75,000 in total prizes to 31 aspiring entrepreneurs. In total,&nbsp;72 businesses and 81 students participated in&nbsp;the event in April at the K-State Student Union.

The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge, or KEC, is a program of the NetWork Kansas Entrepreneurship (E)-Community Partnership and involves several Kansas State University partners, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/">Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship</a>&nbsp;in the College of Business Administration. Through the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.k-state.edu/105">K-State 105 initiative</a>, the 2023-2024 competition year involved&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/">K-State Research and Extension</a>&nbsp;and Kansas 4-H.KEC represents the culmination of a sequence of community-based entrepreneurship competitions for students in grades 6-12, known as the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, or YEC, series. Students are selected to compete in KEC by winning a sanctioned YEC series competition or by being selected as one of 16 wildcard participants, who are chosen because of the strength of their executive summary and pre-recorded elevator pitch.

This competition year marks the 11th annual YEC season and was the largest year for the entrepreneurship series, with 1,159 students participating from across the state.

"NetWork Kansas is thrilled with the growth of the YEC Series over the past decade," said Amara Kniep, director of (E)-Community Partnership. "Our goal is to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in young Kansans and to empower our youth to know that their future is in their hands."

The YEC series consists of local-level youth entrepreneurship competitions hosted by volunteers. Local YEC series events require students to prepare an executive summary and formal presentation, and they often feature interactive tradeshows or elevator pitches. Students work in teams or individually to represent a business concept and compete for awards and prizes. Students' work is judged by local entrepreneurs, public sector partners, teachers and other community members.

The businesses that advanced to the KEC state championship were judged on their executive summaries and mock boardroom presentations."K-State Research and Extension is excited to be a partner in this hands-on learning experience for the youth of Kansas," said Sarah Maass, program director for 4-H youth development. "The future for our state is bright with these young entrepreneurs helping lead the way."

MANHATTAN AND ANDOVER — The statewide&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/KEC-competition-info.html">Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge</a>&nbsp;recently awarded more than $75,000 in total prizes to 31 aspiring entrepreneurs. In total,&nbsp;72 businesses and 81 students participated in&nbsp;the event in April at the K-State Student Union.The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge, or KEC, is a program of the NetWork Kansas Entrepreneurship (E)-Community Partnership and involves several Kansas State University partners, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/departments/center-advancement-entrepreneurship/">Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship</a>&nbsp;in the College of Business Administration. Through the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.k-state.edu/105">K-State 105 initiative</a>, the 2023-2024 competition year involved&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/">K-State Research and Extension</a>&nbsp;and Kansas 4-H.KEC represents the culmination of a sequence of community-based entrepreneurship competitions for students in grades 6-12, known as the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, or YEC, series. Students are selected to compete in KEC by winning a sanctioned YEC series competition or by being selected as one of 16 wildcard participants, who are chosen because of the strength of their executive summary and pre-recorded elevator pitch.This competition year marks the 11th annual YEC season and was the largest year for the entrepreneurship series, with 1,159 students participating from across the state."NetWork Kansas is thrilled with the growth of the YEC Series over the past decade," said Amara Kniep, director of (E)-Community Partnership.
