Victoria's Herzogfest announces entertainment

Hays has received .57 inches of rain in the last 48 hours, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.

The city has received 6.26 inches of rain year to date. That compares to an average of 3.33 inches of rain for the month of May and a 7.92-inch average year to date by the end of May.

The Kansas Drought Monitor, as of Tuesday, had Ellis County listed as abnormally dry, which has improved from moderate drought thanks to recent rains.

Releasing water during late spring maximizes its benefit. Cooler temperatures and lower levels of plant activity in May enable more of the released water to seep into the groundwater, replenishing the aquifer efficiently.

That water release began on Monday and will continue through May 16.

The forecast calls for a slight chance of showers between 2 and 4 p.m. today and a 10% chance before 7 p.m. The high today is forecast to be 72.

The forecast through Monday is sunny and clear with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Hays is about to get much brighter with one smile at a time.

Dr. Alexyss Leiker is a Hays native bringing her dental practice home by expanding from Hoisington to a newly renovated office in Hays.

"I always had dreams of owning my own practice in my hometown of Hays," Leiker said.

After three years of working in Hoisington, she bought a building at 2701 Hall St. in Hays, with plans to open in early 2026.  Leiker said the building matched her ideal layout the moment she first saw it.

"I fell in love with it. I thought this was the perfect spot with great parking," she said. "The stars aligned, and I was able to purchase it. ... This would be the time to take a risk. It's now or never."

Construction on Leiker’s new office was announced in April. While excited to return to her hometown, Leiker said her Hoisington location will remain open.

Both offices will provide the same dental services to ensure a consistent patient experience, including preventive care, restorative treatments and cosmetic dentistry. Additional offerings like Botox and dental implants are planned for the future.

Leiker said another way her dentistry will stand out is by offering Friday appointments, a popular request that most other dental offices in the area do not provide.

"What makes us different is our focus on compassion and creating a long-term relationship with our patients," Leiker said. "I understand that going to a dentist can be stressful for many, so I've designed the office to be calming and welcoming."

Leiker said she wants Leiker Smiles to be more than just a dental office by getting involved with schools, community events and local health initiatives.

"Oral health impacts the overall health, so I see this practice as a part of the broader well-being of our town," she said.

Leiker earned her degree from Fort Hays State University and completed her Doctor of Dental Science at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 2020.

She purchased her first practice in Hoisington in 2022.&nbsp;

Leiker Smiles of Hoisington to expand to Hays

LAWRENCE - The <a href="https://www.kspaonline.org/">Kansas Scholastic Press Association</a> is proud to announce the winners of the 2025 KSPA State Contests, which awarded the best student journalism from nearly 1,300 entries gathered from around the state. Students were put to the test as they demonstrated their writing, design, illustration, photography, video and reporting skills.

In the State Contest, students from about 80 schools competed in 26 different categories, organized by school size classification. All qualified by placing in KSPA’s regional contest. More than 400 students earned recognition by placing in the top six in each contest. Results were announced via KSPA’s Instagram (@kspaonline) this week. A list of final results can be found on the KSPA website here.

Hays High School journalists place third in 5A at state

Many of us grew up watching “Sesame Street” and learning from Big Bird. Over 50 years later, I still remember my favorite songs from the show: Kermit the frog singing “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green”, Ernie singing “Rubber Duckie”, and Big Bird singing the alphabet.

For over 40 years, kids in central and western Kansas have been able to learn reading, math, science, and social skills by watching “Sesame Street”, “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood”, “Clifford the Big Red Dog”, “Curious George”, and many others on Smoky Hills Public TV (also called Smoky Hills PBS). 

· Issued an executive order to immediately defund PBS, which provides these shows to Smoky Hills PBS;

· Eliminated funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in its Fiscal Year 2026 budget; and

· Plans to ask Congress to rescind already-appropriated funding for the CPB.

The CPB is the Congressionally-created private, nonprofit corporation that allocates federal funding appropriated by Congress to local PBS stations and provides key infrastructure needed for local public TV stations to operate.

CPB funding is critical for a station like Smoky Hills PBS that serves 51 rural counties with relatively small populations, requiring 4 transmitters to broadcast its programming. These transmitters are expensive to operate and maintain. 

Serving areas with small populations likely means having lower potential revenue (i.e., fewer individual and corporate donors). Conversely, urban stations like the one in Kansas City can serve 5 times more people with just 1 transmitter.

Defunding CPB would financially devastate Smoky Hills PBS and defunding PBS would cut off kids’ access to these educational shows that are available at no charge, unlike those on cable, satellite, and streaming services. 

During the past 5 years, 48% of Smoky Hills PBS’ revenue has come from CPB. CPB costs Americans about $1.60 per person and comprises roughly 0.01% of the federal budget.

NORTON COUNTY —Four people were injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Wednesday in Norton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Chevy Malibu driven by Shelby J. Gibson, 17, Norton, was attempting to turn from Lower Dam Road onto U.S. 283.

The driver pulled out in front of a southbound 2014 Peterbilt semi driven by Trent C.&nbsp;Koehler, 42, Marion. The semi struck the car.

EMS transported Gibson and&nbsp; passengers identified as 18-year-old Rhiannon&nbsp;Romey of Norton,&nbsp; 20-year-old Roxy&nbsp;White and 20-year-old Sierra Dial both of Lenora to&nbsp;Kearney Good Samaritan Hospital. Koehler was not injured. Gibson, Romey and Dial were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Two NW Kansas teens among 4 injured in car, semi crash

Yes, you read that right.&nbsp;We had several worm days recently following a couple of soaking rains.

&nbsp;Hard, dry dirt or super fine dust became all too common for those who live near the 100th Meridian. Most of us hadn’t seen a worm unless we bought it in a Styrofoam box at the bait shop, so these overnight rains not only turned our hardpack to mud, it brought soggy wigglers to the surface where they could soak up sun and dry out.

Years ago, I read a story about first grade girls greeting one another on the playground before school started one rainy morning with jubilant cries of, “It’s a worm day! Yea.” Every since then, when we get a good soaking, I wake up thinking, “Yea! It’s a worm day!” How can I not celebrate.

First things first on such occurrences—still in jammies, I raced from window to window making sure bushes, trees, flowers, garden plants, and patio pots celebrated as joyfully as I did. 

I hadn’t measured before the rain, but I’m sure our hollyhocks grew six inches overnight. Either that or increased hydraulic pressure due to extra ground moisture made them stand taller and prouder than they had the day before. The asparagus for sure grew enough to require harvesting. We dined well that night. Nearby, strawberry plants stretched their tendrils into new territory. One growing an actual strawberry looked more vibrant than usual. Around the corner, floppy horseradish perked up and looked like it flexed leafy muscles.

As I inventoried plantings, I spied joyous robins hopping around the yard. I had to check out front to see if as many lingered there as in the backyard. Yep, they like worm days too. For the next several hours I watched them score one delectable nightcrawler after another. They can’t store them so they must’ve eaten til they about burst.

Even the chickens seemed excitable. Perhaps they lucked out and found worms seeking dry ground in their pen. If sodden creatures emerged within reach of our four tiny dinosaurs, they didn’t last long. That might explain some of the squawks and flapping wings I observed. It might also explain extra muddy footprints on that day’s egg collection.

Later that day, a friend found multiple soaked earthworms attempting to dry out by lining his concrete driveway,. Neighborhood robins spied them before they crawled back underground. I’m guessing those stuffed birds resorted to an after-feast nap to recover from their gluttonous overindulgence.

Years ago, a student asked me how bored I was to focus on so many little details my yard. That caught me unawares. I’d never thought of my observations defining boredom. I always thought they enriched each day and offered more to be grateful for. 

Worm days add additional layers to everyday blessings. Besides spying water-logged vermiculture, I see unexpected bird interactions—this is wooing time so I might see a worm become a tenderly delivered courtship offering.

Some might consider attention to detail boring, but it’s not—especially on worm days. What a thrill to witness minute details about how plants, birds, and insects respond to a long-prayed for rain.

I hadn’t measured before the rain, but I’m sure our hollyhocks grew six inches overnight. Either that or increased hydraulic pressure due to extra ground moisture made them stand taller and prouder than they had the day before. The asparagus for sure grew enough to require harvesting. We dined well that night. Nearby, strawberry plants stretched their tendrils into new territory. One growing an actual strawberry looked more vibrant than usual. Around the corner, floppy horseradish perked up and looked like it flexed leafy muscles.As I inventoried plantings, I spied joyous robins hopping around the yard. I had to check out front to see if as many lingered there as in the backyard. Yep, they like worm days too. For the next several hours I watched them score one delectable nightcrawler after another. They can’t store them so they must’ve eaten til they about burst.Even the chickens seemed excitable. Perhaps they lucked out and found worms seeking dry ground in their pen. If sodden creatures emerged within reach of our four tiny dinosaurs, they didn’t last long. That might explain some of the squawks and flapping wings I observed. It might also explain extra muddy footprints on that day’s egg collection.Later that day, a friend found multiple soaked earthworms attempting to dry out by lining his concrete driveway,. Neighborhood robins spied them before they crawled back underground. I’m guessing those stuffed birds resorted to an after-feast nap to recover from their gluttonous overindulgence.Years ago, a student asked me how bored I was to focus on so many little details my yard. That caught me unawares. I’d never thought of my observations defining boredom. I always thought they enriched each day and offered more to be grateful for. Worm days add additional layers to everyday blessings. Besides spying water-logged vermiculture, I see unexpected bird interactions—this is wooing time so I might see a worm become a tenderly delivered courtship offering.Some might consider attention to detail boring, but it’s not—especially on worm days. One of the most anticipated parts of the day is the Wicked Wilson Gravel Race, expected to draw around 100 cyclists to downtown Russell. Just west on I-70 from the gravel-famous Flint Hills lies a hidden gem—perhaps the best-kept secret in Midwest Gravel—the beautiful Smoky Hills of Russell County. These fast-rolling roads offer a challenge that won’t chew up your tires, with steep, relentless hills and stunning views waiting at nearly every summit. Riders will take on four “Ruler of the Mountain” climbs and experience a course full of diverse, engaging terrain from beginning to end. The 100k race will take off from downtown at 7:30 AM, followed by the 50k race at 8:30 AM. Registration is $99 for the 100k and $79 for the 50k. Thomas More Prep-Marian and other Hays High School students and contributors were honored with Jester Award nominations.

"For over two decades, the Jester Awards, presented by Music Theatre Wichita, have celebrated excellence in Kansas high school musical theatre. Dedicated judges recognize the hard work and creativity of students and faculty statewide, from Wichita to Garden City and beyond," the Jester Awards program said on its website.

"This program, honoring casts, crews, directors and designers, is made possible by the legacy of Belden and Anna Mills, through the Lois K. Walls Jester Fund at MTWichita and the Naftzger Fund for Fine Arts."

“The level of talent present in our high schools around Kansas is spectacular,” said Paul Witte, MTWichita’s board president. “I see at least 25 Broadway and professional shows a year, in addition to Jester school shows. I’m always blown away by the dedication of our students and teachers in producing student shows we can admire.”

Local student productions, performers honored with Jester Awards

&nbsp;Ellis County Attorney On May 1, 2025, a man accused of aggravated indecent liberties with a child was found not guilty by a jury of 12 in Ellis County District Court.&nbsp;

The defendant, Amador Pena III, was charged with one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, an off-grid person felony. The charge alleged Pena lewdly touched/fondled his daughter, an 11-year-old, in July of 2022. Pena is a Florida resident who was visiting relatives in Hays during the time of the alleged crime.&nbsp;

The defendant was represented by Kip Johnson, Hays attorney. The state was represented by former Ellis County Attorney and now Special Prosecutor Appointed Robert A. Anderson Jr. Judge Curtis J. Brown, chief district court judge of the 23rd Judicial District, presided over the trial.&nbsp;

The jury heard testimony from the 11-year-old daughter (now age 14), who testified that during this incident, her father was “spooning” her, rubbing her side, and whispering statements about her becoming a woman. The victim also testified that the defendant had an erect penis poking into her back and buttocks while cuddling her. Additionally, the jury heard testimony from the victim’s older sisters, who testified about specific instances of other sexual misconduct they alleged the defendant had committed against them.&nbsp;

The defense presented several character witnesses, highlighting the defendant’s military service record and top-secret government clearance. The defendant took the stand to testify and denied all allegations. Throughout the trial, the defense focused on the bitter dissolution of the marriage between the defendant and the girls’ mother, suggesting that the allegations were fabricated to get back at their father for abandoning the family and for other various transgressions, like cutting them off financially.&nbsp;

The jury deliberated for over four hours before notifying the judge around 5 p.m. on Thursday that they were “hopelessly split” in their decision. The court inquired of the jury foreman to see if they believed it was possible they could reach a unanimous verdict if they continued to deliberate. The foreman indicated they would try. Twenty minutes later, the jury reached a unanimous “not guilty” verdict.&nbsp;

“This verdict tells me that I failed to convince this jury beyond a reasonable doubt," Anderson said.

“Such a small percentage of sex crimes are reported to law enforcement each year. Of those that are reported, an even smaller percentage result in criminal charges. Of those where charges are filed, only a very small amount reaches a criminal jury trial. Of those that make it to trial, not all of them result in a conviction," he said.

"I believe these statistics are attributable to many different factors. For instance, these are the types of crimes that are almost never committed in front of others. These are the types of crimes where we aren’t going to have video evidence. These are 'he said, she said' cases, and the jury will either believe the victim beyond a reasonable doubt, or they won’t,” Anderson said.

“Unfortunately, the pattern I’ve seen, particularly here in Ellis County, is that sexual assault victims, even when they are children, are on trial just as much, if not more, than a defendant. I believe this is why these crimes don’t get reported, don’t get filed, and don’t result in conviction,” Anderson said.

“Sexual abuse and sexual assault happen in every community. It is difficult for people to imagine this happening, particularly in our own community, but it does. I am proud that the Ellis County Attorney’s Office is not afraid to file difficult cases and take them to trial. I know under Aaron Cunningham’s leadership the office will continue to seek justice for victims and hold perpetrators accountable, even in cases where, historically, juries acquit,” Anderson said.&nbsp;

Ellis County jury acquits father in aggravated indecent liberties with a child case

A man accused of stealing funds from Thomas More Prep-Marian made his first appearance in court on Tuesday.

Former TMP employee Joseph Aaron Roth, 31, of Hays, is facing a theft charge for allegedly transferring&nbsp;$19,153 from a TMP account into his personal account.

The crime is listed in court records as a level 9 nonperson felony.

He entered a not guilty plea on March 10.

Roth's next appearance in court is set for May 20.

This is the first moisture Hays received during May. The city receives an average of 3.33 inches of rain by the end of May.

Hays has received about 5.94 inches of rain year to date compared to a yearly average of 7.92 inches by the end of May.

The forecast calls for a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, with chances of more rain, 20 to 30%, overnight.

New rainfall amounts are expected to be between a tenth and a quarter of an inch. Higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers overnight bring moisture; more rain chances today

When his business partner suggested to Billy Sims that they start a barbecue restaurant, the former star running back for the Oklahoma Sooners and Detroit Lions was dubious, to say the least.

“Like most men, we think we can barbecue,” Sims said.

Sims and his partner started out slowly with just a few restaurants in Oklahoma, then started to franchise out locations. On Saturday, Sims signed autographs and met fans for two hours at his Billy Sims BBQ restaurant in Hays.

Brian Garcia was one of those fans who asked Sims, “Why barbecue?”

“When I asked Billy how he got into the business, he said he was still trying to figure that out,” Garcia said.

Opposing defenses never could figure out Sims. As a youngster growing up in St. Louis, he wanted to be a big-league baseball player. After moving to football-crazy Texas, Sims turned his attention to that sport.

“Everybody was playing football,” Sims said. “I decided to get involved in the football side of it. The rest is history.”

Sims won the Heisman Trophy his junior year with the Sooners in 1978, rushing for 1,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. Sims did not find out he won the Heisman Trophy with a big ceremony in New York like they do these days.

Sims was in class, and his roommate came rushing in to give him the news.

“That’s how I found out, from my roommate,” Sims said. “My professor didn’t care about the Heisman Trophy. I finished class and was an hour late for my interview.”

After finishing his career at Oklahoma with 3,813 yards rushing and 48 touchdowns, Sims was the overall No. 1 pick in the NFL draft by the Detroit Lions.

“Not bragging,” Sims said. “But ‘first round, first pick’ sounds pretty good until they tell you where you’re going – Detroit!?”

Sims could only laugh at the recollection. But his runs over, through and around defenders was no laughing matter.

After going 2-14 the previous season, the Lions finished 9-7 in 1980, when Sims was named Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,303 yards and 13 touchdowns.

“We started off 4-0,” Sims said. “The whole state of Michigan thought we were going to win the Super Bowl.”

But fate intervened in the form of artificial turf fields, which were popular back then in stadiums. After Sims and the Lions made the playoffs in 1983, the next season would prove to be his last in the NFL.

In the eighth game that year, at the Minnesota Vikings in the Metrodome on their artificial turf, Sims was running on a sweep and planted his right leg to cut upfield. He crumpled to the ground with a serious knee injury. After a seven-hour operation, he vowed to play again. But he was never the same and was forced to retire.

“At that time, there were three or four stadiums with terrible turf,” Sims said. “It wasn’t a hit. It was the turf that got me.”

“I was trying to come back too fast, playing on that bad knee,” he added. “I knew it was time to hang it up.”

Sims, 69, finished his NFL career with three Pro Bowl selections and as a two-time All-American was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Football’s loss was barbecue-loving fans’ gain.

Sims was in attendance for the grand opening of the Hays franchise for Billy Sims BBQ on July 27, 2017. Saturday was his first time back in Hays since the opening of his 63rd franchise. He said he listens closely to fans’ feedback.

“The fans will tell you the truth about the food,” Sims said.

Amy Bohrer, general manager for the Hays franchise, said there were more dine-in customers than usual on Saturday, and fans were lined up outside, waiting for the doors to open.

Fans – many clad in OU garb – patiently waited in line for autographs and selfies with the Sooners legend.

“It’s wonderful to put a personality behind the face we all know,” Bohrer said.

Rod Windholz and his 7-year-old son, Landon, met Sims and got an autograph before heading off to a youth soccer game.

When Windholz learned Sims was coming to town, he looked high and low for an old Sports Illustrated magazine he had with Sims on the cover, but couldn’t find it.

So, he found one on eBay for Sims to sign, but it had not arrived in the mail before Saturday. He told Sims about it, and the former Sooner star arranged to have the magazine mailed to him to sign, then mail it back.

“I’m going to get it signed after all,” Windholz said.

Garcia joined his brother, Colten Acton, and Acton’s wife, Jessica, to meet Sims on Saturday. Colten – a Boomer Sooner like no other – wore an OU jersey and a Sooners cap to the signing.

“I think he’s a bigger fan than me, for sure,” said Jessica, who admitted with a laugh that she roots for Kansas State.

Colten had a spot picked out for his autographed football.

 </figure>By RANDY GONZALES Special to the Hays PostWhen his business partner suggested to Billy Sims that they start a barbecue restaurant, the former star running back for the Oklahoma Sooners and Detroit Lions was dubious, to say the least.“Like most men, we think we can barbecue,” Sims said.Sims and his partner started out slowly with just a few restaurants in Oklahoma, then started to franchise out locations. On Saturday, Sims signed autographs and met fans for two hours at his Billy Sims BBQ restaurant in Hays.Brian Garcia was one of those fans who asked Sims, “Why barbecue?”“When I asked Billy how he got into the business, he said he was still trying to figure that out,” Garcia said.Opposing defenses never could figure out Sims. As a youngster growing up in St. Louis, he wanted to be a big-league baseball player. After moving to football-crazy Texas, Sims turned his attention to that sport.“Everybody was playing football,” Sims said. “I decided to get involved in the football side of it.  </figure><h2>Rushing to success</h2>Baseball’s loss was football’s gain.Sims won the Heisman Trophy his junior year with the Sooners in 1978, rushing for 1,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. Sims did not find out he won the Heisman Trophy with a big ceremony in New York like they do these days.Sims was in class, and his roommate came rushing in to give him the news.“That’s how I found out, from my roommate,” Sims said. “My professor didn’t care about the Heisman Trophy. I finished class and was an hour late for my interview.”After finishing his career at Oklahoma with 3,813 yards rushing and 48 touchdowns, Sims was the overall No. 1 pick in the NFL draft by the Detroit Lions.“Not bragging,” Sims said. “But ‘first round, first pick’ sounds pretty good until they tell you where you’re going – Detroit!?”<figure>

But his runs over, through and around defenders was no laughing matter.After going 2-14 the previous season, the Lions finished 9-7 in 1980, when Sims was named Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,303 yards and 13 touchdowns.“We started off 4-0,” Sims said. “The whole state of Michigan thought we were going to win the Super Bowl.”But fate intervened in the form of artificial turf fields, which were popular back then in stadiums. After Sims and the Lions made the playoffs in 1983, the next season would prove to be his last in the NFL.<h2>Knee injury ends career</h2>In the eighth game that year, at the Minnesota Vikings in the Metrodome on their artificial turf, Sims was running on a sweep and planted his right leg to cut upfield.
