It’s hard to believe that another year of being an extension agent has flown by! July 25 marks my 2nd anniversary as an extension agent. I just finished up my second year at the Ellis County Fair as well. Thank goodness for wonderful weather as it was another enjoyable week at the fairgrounds.

This year I got to help judge a couple of classes, which was quite an honor. I got to help Neil Younger, Ellis County Commissioner, judge the Special Class which was “Anything Noodles”. We had several entries but the winner went to, Dustin Rajewski, who made a tasty cold pasta salad based off of a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. I also assisted Seamus Holmes, Eagle Scout, who judged the open class scouting division. With a small number of entries, it was a difficult decision! I encourage more scouts to enter their merit badge projects, pinewood derby cars, or collections in the fair.

I also want to send a big thank you to all adults and youth who entered our King Arthur muffin class. We had a nice number of entries. Next year the King Arthur class will be “Yeast Breads”.

My favorite part of the 2024 fair was getting to watch the 4-H Champion Fitting and Showing Contest. I had never seen this competition before but WOW! These kids are amazing. I can’t believe the confidence and joy they have in working with the animals. I was brought to tears when the winners were announced. The junior winners were brothers so they hugged each other. Then two of their sisters won intermediate and finally one of their older sisters won the senior division. Almost the whole family was out there hugging and congratulating each other. It was heartwarming to see the support and love for each other.

One of the highlights of my second year was the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Level 2 class held at the beginning of 2024. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is a strength training class for older adults that helps them with balance, strength and flexibility. I had ten women enroll who were also previous Level 1 participants. They all finished! Now that is perseverance! Yes, life happens and throws us curveballs. Some participants had to miss a few classes, but they all finished. Not only did they all finish, but they continued to meet and do the exercises on their own! We had so much fun during the class and I’m so thankful for these ladies that have enriched my life and taught me so much. Another class will begin in early August.

I also brought two other K-State Research and Extension signature programs to the Cottonwood District this year. I have to say Walk with Ease has been my favorite program to offer. Walk with Ease is a program designed to help people with arthritis develop a walking routine. We partnered with Hays Rec to offer this program. Dining with Diabetes was the other new program offered this year. Thanks again to Hays Rec for partnering with us to provide an education and demonstration class to people with diabetes. We plan to continue these programs as time and need allow.

Since my background is in early childhood, I really enjoy supporting child cares in our community as well as programming in libraries and schools. Glo-germ handwashing, blender bike, story walks and organwise are a few of the programs I have to offer for the youth.

Goals for next year include offering Hypertension Awareness Prevention Program (look for that in February 2025) and to increase Maternal Child Health services in Ellis County. Several community partners plan on offering Becoming a Mom prenatal education classes in 2025 to create a circle of support for all families expecting a baby within their peers and with the services available to them in Ellis County. Mental health programs continue to be important in our community. I recently became certified in QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) which is a suicide prevention program and plan to offer those trainings as well.

Crude oil prices dropped nearly three dollars in just the last two trading sessions in New York.&nbsp; 

The Friday, July 27, settlement for September crude on the NYMEX was down more than a dollar to $77.16 per barrel.&nbsp;Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $67.50 per barrel after dropping a dollar on Friday. That price is down more than six dollars since the first of the month, but it's more than five dollars higher than at the first of this year.&nbsp;

The world's second largest oil-services provider says global and offshore exploration spending will grow this year, but U.S. shale operations will slow. 

The CEO of Baker Hughes told investors in an earnings call last week that the company's already glum outlook for this year is getting even more so. They forecast exploration spending in North America will fall this year, by percentages in the mid-single digit range, while offshore and international workloads will grow. U.S. shale work is dropping due to consolidation, careful spending and lower natural gas prices, according to reporting from Bloomberg.

The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes rose to 589 rigs, including an increase of five oil rigs. The gas rig count dropped by two rigs. The tally in Oklahoma was up two rigs from last week.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service is up one in eastern Kansas at 12 active rigs, and unchanged west of Wichita at 15 rigs. The tally is down four percent from a month ago and 31% lower than a year ago at this time. Drilling continued Monday on a lease in Ellis County.

Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 14 newly-completed wells for the week, four east of Wichita and ten in western Kansas. That's 727 for the year so far, compared to 959 by this time last year.

Kansas regulators okayed 33 new drilling permits last week, with 20 in eastern Kansas and 13 west of Wichita. Those include one new drilling location in Ellis County and one in Russell County. That's 570 new drilling locations statewide since the first of the year, compared to 720 a year ago at this time.

The U.S. imported more crude oil than we shipped out by 2.7 million barrels per day last week. Petroleum product exports outpaced imports by nearly 4.5 million barrels per day. Crude imports averaged 6.9 million barrels per day, down by 166,000 barrels from a week ago. The four-week average is up 2.9 percent or 200,000 barrels over last year at this time. 

Crude exports averaged over 4.1 million barrels per day last week. Four-week average exports are up by about 600-thousand barrels over a year ago.

The government reports commercial crude inventories dropped 3.7 million barrels to just over 436 million barrels. Current stockpiles are five percent below the five-year seasonal average. 

Energy Information Administration inventory reporting shows another 700,000 barrels in refills for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which now stands at 374.4 million barrels. That's down from about 600 million barrels before the Department of Energy began selling barrels to temper the effects of the Ukraine invasion. This week's reporting adds $10.6 million in savings to the U.S. Treasury.

The government reported a slight drop in Alaska production, while output in the lower 48 states was unchanged at 12.9 million barrels per day. Total output averages 13,314,000 barrels per day, topping 13.3 million for the second week in a row. Cumulative production so far this year is about seven percent ahead of last year at this time.

Crude production in the number-three producing state, North Dakota, dropped by nearly four percent in May.

 The latest monthly reporting from the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources notes output dropped by 48,000 barrels per day (bpd) to just over 1.19 million bpd.&nbsp; That's the lowest production average since January weather shut in production across the country. North Dakota natural gas production also dropped in May, but the state's closely watched gas-capture rate held steady at 95%.

Puerto Rico filed a billion dollar lawsuit against the oil and gas industry joining the ranks of more than two dozen cities, counties and states that are seeking compensation for the effects of climate change. The lawsuit was filed last week in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan, accusing Exxon Mobil, BP, Chevron and other companies of unfair trade practices and failing to provide warnings about known environmental risks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

News from the Oil Patch: Baker Hughes lowers forecasts for North American oil & gas

The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed the eastbound driving lane on I-70 near mile marker 117 in Trego County.

The closure is necessary because of safety concerns regarding the structure carrying 150th&nbsp;Avenue over the interstate. The speed limit has been reduced to 60 mph through this area of I-70.

The bridge has been hit numerous times by above-height loads, and it is currently closed to traffic. A project to remove the bridge is planned for this fall.

After a daytime high of 103 degrees in Hays on Sunday, a fast moving thunderstorm shortly before 10 p.m. helped cool the temperature down a little more quickly, to 72 degrees.

The rainfall measured at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town was 0.54 inches.

So far in July, Hays has received 2.88 inches of rain, about half an inch less than the cumulative average for the month of 3.33 inches.

The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor map for Kansas shows all of Ellis County still in a drought, ranging from abnormally dry in the northwest part of the county to severe drought in the southeast corner.&nbsp;

Temperatures early this week will be soaring past the century mark according to the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4e795463-b113-46a4-8a6c-310326769109">three-day weather forecast</a>, with a heat advisory in effect for Monday.&nbsp;

Overnight rain brings temporary cooling relief to Hays; heat advisory today

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office responded to 312 incidents July 21-27, 2024, according to the activity report.

Thirteen counties in Kansas ceased to offer obstetric care services from 2013 to 2023 — a statistic that points to a shrinking availability of maternal care in Kansas, the lack of which can cause poor outcomes in pregnancy and delivery, overburdened hospitals and long drives for women seeking adequate care.

Jennifer Cunningham drove more than six hours for care at the University of Kansas Health System for two of her four, high-risk pregnancies because she didn’t feel the limited obstetrics department in her home area of Garden City could take care of her.

Garden City, with a population of about 27,000, serves as a local hub for shopping and other services in southwest Kansas. But with a declining number of providers who can deliver, Cunningham said, many of the women she knows are driving to Wichita, or further, to seek adequate care during their pregnancies and for deliveries.

It makes her worry for the future growth and prosperity of the town.

“If we can’t provide those basic services, we can’t continue to survive in general,” Cunningham said Tuesday during a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.medicalnewsnetwork.org/NewsNetwork/DocTalk/M/Morning%20Medical%20Update%20Tuesday%207-23-24" target="_blank">KU Health news briefing on rural maternity care</a>. “Local professionals, who are lawyers or other doctors or other professionals, they aren’t going to choose to come and live here if they can’t even have a baby here.”

Obstetric and family medicine providers are searching for solutions to the maternal health care deserts in everything from telehealth to student loan repayment incentives.

Bob Moser, executive director at the Kansas Center for Rural Health, said it is difficult for a rural hospital to retain or attract an OB-GYN doctor or someone who can provide those services.

“It’s challenging if you go out there and you’re the only provider providing obstetrical services, because you’re basically on call 24/7,” Moser said.

Additionally, these hospitals often lack consistent anesthesia services and wraparound, pre- and postnatal care.

“As more (communities) are dropping (obstetrical services), it falls to those who are remaining to take on that added burden,” Moser said.

Patients are driving further, sometimes an hour or more, to seek care throughout their pregnancies, which means more time off, additional child care and increased expenses.

Moser said the travel distance also increases the risk of roadside birth or a person in labor walking into the nearest emergency room, to be met with a nurse who maybe hasn’t delivered in 10 or more years.

Marc Parrish, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at KU Health, performs telemedicine services with patients across the state.

Parrish was Cunningham’s caregiver and performed some of her check-ups via telehealth and a partnership with an ultrasound clinic in Garden City.

Parrish said it’s like being “in a fight with one hand tied behind your back.” Telehealth can only be as good as what the local partner is able and willing to provide, he said.

Michael Kennedy, a family medicine physician and rural health expert with KU Health, said he also sees a lack of obstetric exposure during residency programs and not enough effort to get doctors in training to experience rural hospitals.

There are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kumc.edu/institute-for-community-engagement/our-divisions/rural-health/programs-and-services/kansas-bridging-plan/loan-forgiveness-and-repayment-options.html" target="_blank">several loan repayment programs</a>&nbsp;on a state and federal level that incentivize doctors who specialize in OB-GYN services or choose to serve in health professional shortage areas. Kennedy and others on the panel said these programs could be an effective way to alleviate some of the maternal care shortages.

Maternal care deserts exist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.marchofdimes.org/maternity-care-deserts-report" target="_blank">throughout the country</a>, including in urban areas.

Sandra Stites, an OB-GYN and chief medical officer at Vibrant Health in Kansas City, Kansas, said if care is not culturally accessible, even folks in an urban setting can be in a care desert that can endanger their pregnancies.

Medical professionals on the panel said solutions for all of these shortages will require collaboration across local, regional, state and national advocates.

Carrie Wieneke, OB-GYN clinical service chief for KU Health, said access to maternal care is on the&nbsp;<a href="https://healthexec.com/topics/patient-care/care-delivery/ecri-out-2024s-top-10-patient-safety-hazards" target="_blank">2024 list for the top 10 patient safety hazards</a>.

“We’re going to have to work together with lots of people at lots of levels, not only in Kansas City but Topeka and D.C., to really be able to provide the care that people deserve,” Wieneke said.

Dr. David Bauer ’68, Kearney, Neb.

Though Dr. David Bauer had always loved music, it was on the campus of Fort Hays State University where he began to hone the talents that led to his lifelong success. Thanks to the mentorship from his FHSU music instructors, Dr. Donald Stout, Mr. Lyle Dilley, Dr. Leland Bartholomew, Mr. Norman Jennings, and Mr. Patrick Goeser, Bauer developed the skills needed to kickstart a career in choir direction.

After graduating from FHSU, he earned a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Missouri Conservatory of Music in Kansas City and a Doctor of Education degree from Arizona State University. Bauer taught secondary choral music across Kansas for eleven years before transitioning to instructing collegiate-level students. He helped students fine-tune their voices at the University of Nebraska-Kearney for 35 years before retiring in 2019.&nbsp;He continues to be the artistic director of the Platte River Singers, a community choir he created in 2013.

Bauer has enjoyed 56 years of marriage to his wife, Ann, who is also an FHSU alum. The couple has five children, sixteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. This year, the couple received the “Friends of Kearney” award from the Kearney, Nebraska, Chamber of Commerce for contributions and leadership within their community.

Dr. Dale Herl&nbsp;<a></a>’01, Independence, Mo.

Dr. Dale Herl's 11-year tenure as the Independence School District (ISD) superintendent has been marked by transformative leadership and an unwavering dedication to student success. He has propelled the district to new heights with a solid foundation that was built during his four years as ISD's Deputy Superintendent of Operations and Finance. Herl oversees 30 schools with more than 15,000 students and is driven to prepare students for college and their future careers. Under Herl’s leadership, a recent initiative has empowered students within the district and led to a surge in academic achievement. When Herl began serving as superintendent, the ISD offered six courses for college credit, which has grown to more than 90 courses, giving students a head start on their futures.

A lifelong learner, Herl earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Fort Hays State University, and a doctorate from Wichita State University. Actively engaged in community service, Herl is a Rotary Club and Lions Club of Independence member and previously served on the Centerpoint Hospital Board of Directors and ISD Foundation Board.

With four children who graduated from Independence School District schools, Herl's investment in the district mirrors his professional commitment to shaping every student’s future.

Jennifer (Mardis) Kitson ’76, ’80, ’92, Hays

Jennifer Kitson grew up in Pratt, never dreaming that she would leverage her education from Fort Hays State to lead her to where she is today. She has become a recognized leader in school psychology and an expert in advocacy, school mental health, community collaboration, and sustained system change supporting child well-being outcomes.

Kitson received a bachelor's and master’s in psychology and an education specialist in school psychology degrees at Fort Hays State. She had three professional careers over 45 years, including as a school psychology practitioner and coordinator of a $3 million federal grant in Ellis County, a co-leader for a federally funded national center providing training and assistance to communities in 50 states focused on achieving positive outcomes for children and youth, and as an FHSU Department of Psychology instructor and school psychology program director. Kitson’s state and national leadership were recognized as she received the 1997 KASP School Psychologist of the Year, 1999 NASP School Psychologist of the Year, 2022 KASP Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2024 NASP Legend in School Psychology.

Kitson was pivotal in creating Ellis County’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program and coordinating county-wide parenting classes. Her commitment to developing resources like this in communities nationwide further acknowledges the lives she’s touched through her advocacy, passion, and knowledge.

Donald “Don” Reif Jr. ’82, Hoisington

Every day, Don Reif lives and works in service to others thanks to his upbringing and Fort Hays State University education. Reif grew up in Hoisington and graduated with his bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State, double majoring in political science and history. As a student, Reif was involved with FHSU’s Young Democrats and served as a Student Government Association president and senator. These experiences inspired Reif to pursue a Juris Doctor of Law at Washburn University, where he served as a research assistant and intern for the Kansas Legislature.

Reif returned to his hometown of Hoisington after law school and founded an independent firm. Still serving after more than 35 years, Reif provides expertise to clients facing business law, criminal defense, and juvenile law cases. Throughout his career, Reif has facilitated more than 150 adoption cases, finding loving homes for neglected or abused children. He has been known to kindly represent veterans, elderly, and low-income clients pro bono on a case-by-case basis. Outside of his practice, Reif has educated aspiring lawyers as an adjunct instructor at Fort Hays State University for several years.

Sharing his expertise with students isn’t the only support he provides, though. Reif established the Don E. Reif Jr. Political Science Scholarship at Fort Hays State for pre-law political science students. In 2020, he became a Fort Hays State Wooster Society member by including the university in his estate plans. Reif’s passion and love for FHSU are demonstrated through his leadership, generosity, and the legacy he’s leaving in support of future Tigers. &nbsp;

Since graduating from Fort Hays State University, Ernestor De La Rosa has been working behind the scenes to make tangible change in the communities he has called home. As an immigrant, De La Rosa has used his own experience to show the possibilities available to others following in his footsteps. At 12 years old, De La Rosa came to the United States, faced challenges learning a new language, and experienced discrimination. He persevered through many barriers to gain an education.

Due to his status, De La Rosa did not qualify for financial assistance to attend Fort Hays State. He pushed himself to earn a bachelor’s in political science from FHSU while working two jobs. This hardworking spirit carried over to other pursuits, including earning his Master’s in Public Administration from Wichita State University and leading communities in various capacities. In 2014, he became Dodge City’s Assistant to the City Manager and spearheaded several immigration and transportation projects.

In early 2023, he became the City of Topeka’s first-ever Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. De La Rosa transitioned out of the role in 2024, entering the private sector as a regional manager of local government and community affairs with ITC Great Plains Corp., a transmission-only utility company based in Topeka.

His service and mentorship to others, community enrichment efforts, and leadership demonstrate all that is possible for students seeking a degree in political science.

Tre’ Giles ’15, Portland, Ore.

Tre’ Giles, a Colorado native, brings passion, commitment, and joy to everything he does.

As a first-generation college student, Giles became a voice for others with different ethnic backgrounds. Guided by his faith, his ability to uplift those around him was well-recognized at FHSU, earning him both the Men of Merit and Diversity Ally awards. After graduating, Giles took the leadership skills he learned at FHSU to the Peace Corps.

In The Gambia, West Africa, Giles advocated for education and gender equality and created a group to spiritually support fellow volunteers during their service. He was led back to Hays and gravitated naturally to leadership positions at FHSU, Jana’s Campaign, and as a youth director at Celebration Community Church. His latest role as the Pastor of Justice and Mercy at the Bridgetown Church in Portland, Ore., has provided Giles a platform to share his faith in a larger capacity.

Giles empowers audiences in prisons, auditoriums, schools, and international venues to impact their communities through leadership and collaboration. When he’s not busy pastoring at Bridgetown, he cherishes family time with his wife, Carma, and their son, Saint.

Giles took the opportunities available to him at Fort Hays State University and has since proved that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to.

Thanks to the mentorship from his FHSU music instructors, Dr. Donald Stout, Mr. Lyle Dilley, Dr. Leland Bartholomew, Mr. Norman Jennings, and Mr. Patrick Goeser, Bauer developed the skills needed to kickstart a career in choir direction.After graduating from FHSU, he earned a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Missouri Conservatory of Music in Kansas City and a Doctor of Education degree from Arizona State University. Bauer taught secondary choral music across Kansas for eleven years before transitioning to instructing collegiate-level students. He helped students fine-tune their voices at the University of Nebraska-Kearney for 35 years before retiring in 2019.&nbsp;He continues to be the artistic director of the Platte River Singers, a community choir he created in 2013.Bauer has enjoyed 56 years of marriage to his wife, Ann, who is also an FHSU alum. She had three professional careers over 45 years, including as a school psychology practitioner and coordinator of a $3 million federal grant in Ellis County, a co-leader for a federally funded national center providing training and assistance to communities in 50 states focused on achieving positive outcomes for children and youth, and as an FHSU Department of Psychology instructor and school psychology program director. Kitson’s state and national leadership were recognized as she received the 1997 KASP School Psychologist of the Year, 1999 NASP School Psychologist of the Year, 2022 KASP Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2024 NASP Legend in School Psychology.Kitson was pivotal in creating Ellis County’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program and coordinating county-wide parenting classes. Her commitment to developing resources like this in communities nationwide further acknowledges the lives she’s touched through her advocacy, passion, and knowledge.<h2>Distinguished Service Award</h2>Donald “Don” Reif Jr. ’82, HoisingtonEvery day, Don Reif lives and works in service to others thanks to his upbringing and Fort Hays State University education. Reif grew up in Hoisington and graduated with his bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State, double majoring in political science and history. As a student, Reif was involved with FHSU’s Young Democrats and served as a Student Government Association president and senator. These experiences inspired Reif to pursue a Juris Doctor of Law at Washburn University, where he served as a research assistant and intern for the Kansas Legislature.Reif returned to his hometown of Hoisington after law school and founded an independent firm. Still serving after more than 35 years, Reif provides expertise to clients facing business law, criminal defense, and juvenile law cases. Throughout his career, Reif has facilitated more than 150 adoption cases, finding loving homes for neglected or abused children. He has been known to kindly represent veterans, elderly, and low-income clients pro bono on a case-by-case basis. Outside of his practice, Reif has educated aspiring lawyers as an adjunct instructor at Fort Hays State University for several years.Sharing his expertise with students isn’t the only support he provides, though. Reif established the Don E. Reif Jr. Political Science Scholarship at Fort Hays State for pre-law political science students. In 2020, he became a Fort Hays State Wooster Society member by including the university in his estate plans. Reif’s passion and love for FHSU are demonstrated through his leadership, generosity, and the legacy he’s leaving in support of future Tigers. &nbsp;<h2>Young Alumni Award</h2>Ernestor De La Rosa ’12, TopekaSince graduating from Fort Hays State University, Ernestor De La Rosa has been working behind the scenes to make tangible change in the communities he has called home. As an immigrant, De La Rosa has used his own experience to show the possibilities available to others following in his footsteps. At 12 years old, De La Rosa came to the United States, faced challenges learning a new language, and experienced discrimination. He persevered through many barriers to gain an education.Due to his status, De La Rosa did not qualify for financial assistance to attend Fort Hays State. He pushed himself to earn a bachelor’s in political science from FHSU while working two jobs. This hardworking spirit carried over to other pursuits, including earning his Master’s in Public Administration from Wichita State University and leading communities in various capacities. In 2014, he became Dodge City’s Assistant to the City Manager and spearheaded several immigration and transportation projects.In early 2023, he became the City of Topeka’s first-ever Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. Early voting continues through Aug. 5

You have a long to-do list and not enough time in the day to get everything done. Most Americans would agree that this is a regular dilemma. So, we often try to solve this problem by multitasking. Whether it’s eating lunch while replying to emails or making a grocery list while talking on the phone, we are all guilty of multitasking whether we realize it or not.

If you’ve ever noticed that you’re ineffective while multitasking, that’s probably because the human brain is unable to do it. In fact, MIT professor, Dr. Earl Miller, explains, “The brain is incapable of simultaneously processing separate streams of information from multiple tasks.” When we try to multitask, what we are actually doing is inefficiently “task-switching.”

As you can see, productivity suffers when we multitask, but this is not the only consequence of it. Another short-term effect includes overindulgence, and in the long run, this can wreak havoc on health.

It might seem strange to think that multitasking can lead to overindulgence, but research indicates that distraction causes a person to crave more of what they miss out on. For example, if a person plays sudoku while eating lunch, they aren’t fully satisfied by solving the puzzle or their meal. In fact, people who multitask while eating tend to overindulge in food throughout the day. Or, people who scroll through social media while watching TV tend to engage in both activities more frequently.

This concept can also apply to gambling, gaming, and drinking alcohol, so it’s crucial to be mindful when we take part in activities that release “feel good” hormones such as dopamine. Or else we may have the urge to overindulge later on.

To combat this, being mindful can help us to savor the moment and anything we may be doing. While mindfulness is a simple concept, it’s difficult to practice in the midst of a busy day. Here are two tips to stay focused on the present moment.

Start the day off right. First thing in the morning, focus on body sensations for a few minutes. This can include tingling, sleepiness, thirst, and more. You can also tune into sensory stimulations like smell, sight, and sound. These practices are intended to help you notice what is happening to you and around you.

Walking meditation is another structured activity that can help to build a greater sense of mindfulness. Focus on the movement of walking and take in the environment. For example, listen to the chirping birds and notice the warmth of sunshine. Redirect any wandering thoughts to your current experience.

In today’s world of constant distraction, mindfulness is no easy task. But, if we slowed down to savor the things we enjoy, maybe we would be more satisfied and healthier overall.

Hays road closure on 6th, 7th southside between Park, Walnut starts Monday

When I was a kid, I owned a big ole’ jumbo prehistoric aluminum canoe that looked like it would have been more at home on four big tires and pushing a snowplow. Its saving grace was that it was also extra stable on the water. One particular evening my brother-in-law and I were anchored in the middle of dad’s farm pond, fishing. A boat anchor on one end and a big steel ball for an anchor on the other kept the thing from twirling around in the wind. We had multiple tackle boxes open on the seats, I guess to give the appearance that we were big-time contenders on the professional farm-pond bluegill circuit. Anyway, as it was getting dark, we pulled anchor to paddle toward shore. My anchor came up with no problems, but the steel ball on his end was stuck in the black, oozy mud bottom of the pond. Wrapping the rope around his hands a couple times, he leaned backwards to dislodge the steel ball. He was built like a dump truck and when the ball came free, he hit the other side of the canoe like a rodeo bull out of the chute, causing ole’ jumbo to do the unthinkable and dump us both into the drink. There we were, bobbing around in the middle of an absolute flotilla of fishing lures; some floating and some sinking slowly toward the bottom, but all sporting at least three razor-sharp hooks. Now, Katie Ledecky could swim the length of dad’s pond as easily as the rest of us could walk across the kitchen, but how about swimming it through a scum of floating fishing lures.

Welcome to the first event in the 2024 Farm Pond Olympics, the freestyle lure swim. The swimmers can choose their stroke, but they have to stay on top of the water. We’ll divide the pond into lanes with bailer twine tied to electric fence posts on each side of the pond. All shapes and sizes of floating fishing lures will be scattered over each lane beforehand, and at the crack of the starter’s pistol, the swimmers simply swim to the other side of the pond as quickly as possible. The event can be scored a variety of ways; most lures on their body, fewest lures on their body or certain lures could be given a point value and the winner would be the swimmer with the most points when the point value of the lures clinging to their body is tallied. The event could be made even more life-like by unceremoniously flinging each swimmer from a sinking canoe to start the race.

The diving board at dad’s pond was an old steel frame with a big old barn plank for a board. We welded the frame from stuff dug out of the usual farmer’s scrap pile and carried it to the pond with the tractor and loader. It was on the dam, so the frame was made to be as tall as the dam. One end of the old barn plank lay across the steel frame and hung out over the water and the other end rested on top of the dam and was held there with a huge rock. It did little good to bounce on the board when diving because the old plank had zero spring to it. I remember going to a nice swimming pool once with the church youth group and running out onto the diving board and pouncing on it like I did at the pond. The thing flung me so high I had a nose bleed when I hit the water! I once watched my buddy Ralph bounce off the end of the board as usual,

then looked-on as the plank followed him end-over-end into the pond cause’ the rock had somehow gotten moved. Anyway, the next event in the Farm Pond Olympics would be farm pond diving. The degree of difficulty will always be high no matter what dive they choose, and the chunkier divers will have a definite advantage in the event. We’ll probably have to employ an extra person at the judges table to keep an eye on the rock.

Dads pond was chock full of pesky little bluegills and each tiny one we caught found its way into the nearby fencerow as a way to weed them out of the pond. We found out that smacking them with a canoe paddle was a pretty novel and effective way to get them to the fencerow, so the third event in the Farm Pond Olympics would be bluegill batting. The event will be divided into two categories; land batting in which each contestant will bat his or her bluegill from the bank, and water batting where the batting will take place from a canoe. The batters can choose to have their bluegills pitched to them or they can choose the freestyle delivery where they throw it up in the air themselves before whacking it. Winners will be chosen for both longest distance and for highest flight, and naturally canoe paddles will be provided so that no one has an unfair advantage.

I’ve made my pitch to the International Olympic Committee, but I’m not yet sure if this Farm Pond Olympic thing will catch on. I figure we have ranch rodeos so why not Farm Pond Olympics. Any way, if the 2024 Farm Pond Olympics become a reality, I’ll be available to coach bluegill batting…Continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors!

The thing flung me so high I had a nose bleed when I hit the water! I once watched my buddy Ralph bounce off the end of the board as usual,then looked-on as the plank followed him end-over-end into the pond cause’ the rock had somehow gotten moved. Anyway, the next event in the Farm Pond Olympics would be farm pond diving. The degree of difficulty will always be high no matter what dive they choose, and the chunkier divers will have a definite advantage in the event. We’ll probably have to employ an extra person at the judges table to keep an eye on the rock.Dads pond was chock full of pesky little bluegills and each tiny one we caught found its way into the nearby fencerow as a way to weed them out of the pond. We found out that smacking them with a canoe paddle was a pretty novel and effective way to get them to the fencerow, so the third event in the Farm Pond Olympics would be bluegill batting. The event will be divided into two categories; land batting in which each contestant will bat his or her bluegill from the bank, and water batting where the batting will take place from a canoe. The batters can choose to have their bluegills pitched to them or they can choose the freestyle delivery where they throw it up in the air themselves before whacking it. Winners will be chosen for both longest distance and for highest flight, and naturally canoe paddles will be provided so that no one has an unfair advantage.I’ve made my pitch to the International Olympic Committee, but I’m not yet sure if this Farm Pond Olympic thing will catch on. I figure we have ranch rodeos so why not Farm Pond Olympics. What started as a way to help out the high school play 13 years ago has turned into a phenomenal opportunity for youngsters in a six-county area in northwest Kansas.

The Main Street Summer Theater Festival—developed by the Main Street Arts Council in Hoxie—has now expanded to six communities, all in different counties.

Led by two local musical/theatrical icons, the 2024 festival is in its seventh year, and this summer provided more than 225 youngsters ages 5 to 18 opportunities to explore their creativity on stage.

This is all free to participants because the program is funded through various grants and local donations and fundraisers.

“I don’t like the pay-to-play concept. It excludes too many kids,” said Bonnie Cameron, creative director of the Main Street Arts Council and show director of the summer festival. “I want this program to be available to any child.”

Qualifications to participate are simple.

“We just ask them to put the work in and have good behavior and try their best,” Cameron said.

Karl Pratt, executive director of the Main Street Arts Council and festival manager, said they have the children take ownership in the productions.

“Over the years, we have had the kids help sell tickets to the shows and contribute baked goods for bake sales after their performances,” he said. “That makes it possible to plant seeds for the next year’s festival.”

Work on the shows begins in May following spring auditions.&nbsp;

Cognizant of how busy summer schedules can be for youngsters, the directors hold practices for one hour a day, four days a week.

“That’s the model we have found that works the best,” Pratt said. “We really require the kids to do their homework and practice at home. We hold them accountable, and they always come through.”

“We hold them to a pretty high standard,” she said. “They have to come in with their lines learned and be ready to go.”&nbsp;

A born musician who has studied abroad and performed opera professionally in Europe, Cameron returned to her hometown in 2011.

After helping Hoxie High School with its spring play in 2012, she decided to direct the summer community production “Snow White.”

“After that, everyone was asking, ‘What are we doing next year?’ ” Cameron said. “I remember thinking, ‘I guess we just started something.’”

That something soon developed into a full-fledged festival as more and more youngsters jumped on board.

The Main Street Arts Council was formed as a nonprofit organization in 2015, and the summer theater festival was started shortly thereafter.

The festival quickly expanded, with shows added at Atwood, Goodland, Colby, Quinter and Oakley.

Coincidentally, all six towns in which the productions are performed are in different counties, giving more children the chance to participate.

“A big part of our mission is to provide that opportunity at home so they don’t have to travel three to four hours away to participate in something like this,” Pratt said. “There is a lot of untapped talent in their own backyard that you don’t know about until they have an opportunity to express it.”

“It was very organic, knowing other teachers and talking about what we were doing in Hoxie,” Cameron said. “All of a sudden, it was getting bigger and bigger.”

The council has acquired more than 3,000 costume pieces and many other materials over the years, and they are all stored for next year’s use.

For example, this year, 4-year-old Kolbe Schrick got to join his three older brothers and sisters in the “Honk!” production in Colby.<figure>

 </figure>Cameron said it’s not unusual for entire families to participate.This year, the Atwood production of “Aladdin” featured all but one of the seven sons of Mike and Shandi Sayre.Shandi Sayer is one of several parents in the communities who go above and beyond to help out backstage during performances.&nbsp;“We are always grateful for the help of parents and other volunteers, especially during performance weeks, when it’s all hands on deck for the finishing touches to put on a show,” Pratt said.<h2>Learning by doing</h2>Student interns are funded through the Nex-Generation Round Up for Youth organization, and they continue to enjoy preparing for the productions—just in a different role.“It’s a lot more complicated than I thought,” said Hailey Vaughn, a junior-to-be at Hoxie High School this fall.Vaughn served as an intern this year after performing for five years.“I’ve learned so much, how the show all comes together behind the scenes,” she said.Vaughn is thinking of pursuing nursing when she goes off to college in two years. She said she will take valuable life lessons from the summer theater festivals with her, no matter what career path she chooses.“I’ve learned how to work with a lot of different age groups and how to communicate with them,” she said. “It’s been a great experience. When you work together like this, you build a big family. And once a year, we get together with that family.”<figure>

 </figure>Intern Tori Rucker has been involved with the summer festival since she was 10 years old.A 2024 Fort Hays State University graduate, Rucker will begin her professional career in education this fall as a sixth-grade science and social studies teacher in Russell.Like Vaughn, Rucker said she has learned many life lessons.“I’ve really developed my classroom management skills through the festival and how I want to be a teacher,” she said. “You can have strict expectations but still be able to have fun.”One of the many duties of a student intern includes building sets for the productions. Rucker has a real knack for that skill, which she learned from her dad, Ed, while helping him in years past.This year, Rucker added another task to her summer duties and directed the Quinter production of “Shrek The Musical.”As the 2024 summer season winds down, Rucker said she realized how being a teacher had many parallels with directing a play.“Everything I’ve learned at school about being a teacher, I was able to put into action here,” she said. “This summer was a breeze with the kids.”Cameron moved to Chicago about a year ago but vows to keep returning each summer to help direct shows in the music theater festival back home.She said she “was busting at the seams” while watching “Shrek The Musical” in Quinter the weekend of July 13-14.“Tori has grown up with us, and this summer she did it all,” Cameron said. “That’s so rewarding to see how she has taken to what we are doing so well and loves it. Shrek was phenomenal.
