Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital

WAKEEENEY—Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital began experiencing a computer network disruption on May 6.

In response, the hospital immediately activated its incident response plan and began investigating the issue with its IT team and third-party specialists. 

The investigation confirmed the hospital had been targeted by a sophisticated ransomware attack, which we promptly reported to the FBI.

Since day one of this incident, the IT team and third-party specialists have worked tirelessly to safely restore affected systems, minimize any impact on our ability to serve patients and implement additional security features to further secure our network.

"We’d like to thank our doctors and all staff for their hard work continuing hospital operations during network restoration efforts, which are in their final stages. The hospital is currently operating at normal capacity," the hospital said in a press release.

While we are still determining the full scope of potential impact on data stored on our network, we have no reason to believe the criminal perpetrators of this incident accessed or stole any personal identification information and/or protected health information from our network, the press release said.

 Therefore, we do not believe there is any risk to the security of any such information. We will update our community and any impacted individuals should this conclusion change, the press release said.

The hospital IT team will be using lessons learned from this incident to further harden our network amid what is a constantly changing cybersecurity landscape.

This incident is also an important reminder for all of us to remain vigilant about cybersecurity, especially amid continued and escalating threats from criminal actors who routinely target health care providers across the country, the press release said.

Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital subject of ransomware attack

The Run for the Wall convoy ran for shelter when a storm struck during their stop at Bunker Hill, delaying their cross-country journey.

The nonprofit raises awareness for veterans, prisoners of war and those who are missing in action.

On the fifth day of the central route's expedition, the motorcyclists were halted by strong winds, heavy rain and hail on Sunday.

After exiting Interstate 70, the motorcade stopped for gas at Sunmart, 4115 193rd St., before being abruptly instructed to take cover inside the gas station.

Motorcyclist Mark Ruffalo from Los Angeles said that while he had encountered earthquakes before, the unexpected storm was a new experience.

"All of a sudden, we get these tornado warnings," he said. "I've never seen anything grow so far."

For about 45 minutes, the patriots and other travelers took shelter in the truck stop's backroom as the lights flickered and the sound of roaring winds and hail echoed outside.

Motorcyclist and Navy Veteran Darwin Hansen from Idaho said he was not fond of the storm but remained optimistic.

"I didn't like that," Hansen said. "It's been good up until this point, but it's still fun."

Members of the convoy were scattered up to 31 miles from the truck stop.&nbsp;All riders were accounted for, according to the statement.

According to Russell County, the area faced golf-ball-sized hail and wind gusts reaching 82 mph,&nbsp;resulting in damage across the community and leaving many without power.

This marks Hansen's first time in the Run for the Wall, who said he was excited about visiting the Vietnam Wall memorial in Washington, D.C.

"It's something that I wanted to do before my time is up," he said.

The coast-to-coast routes include the central route, the midway route, the southern route and the sandbox route.

The Run for the Wall concludes at the nation's capital before embarking on a three-day "run" to the Middle East Conflicts Wall in Marseilles, Illinois.

Ruffalo said the ride is a deeply emotional and patriotic tribute to retired soldiers, prisoners of war and those missing in action.

"We ride for those who can't ride anymore and who are not with us anymore," he said.

About two hours after seeking shelter, the riders returned to their motorcycles and continued their journey to Junction City, enduring more rain along the way. They are expected to reach Washington, D.C., by Saturday.

About 35 years ago, Run for the Wall was started by veterans who rode motorcycles, working with local radio, television and newspapers to bring attention to the thousands of people still unaccounted for from different wars.

Due to freeway closures, Ruffalo said the convoy has not encountered a single red light, calling the ride a "military operation."

"We can never forget that freedom is not free. A lot of people put their lives on the line for all of us, and that's why I'm riding," he said.

Run for Wall convoy hit by storm at Bunker Hill

The Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau is kicking off the 41st-annual National Travel and Tourism Week May 19-25 with the release of its 2023 Destination Summary report. The report gives an in-depth look at tourism’s impact on the community by leveraging data compiled from analytics and ad-tech platform provider&nbsp;<a href="http://www.datafyhq.com/">Datafy</a>&nbsp;to track the key performance indicators with the greatest impact on the destination’s economy, community, and growth.

Key statistics from the 2023 Destination Summary report<a href="https://outlook.office.com/mail/inbox/id/AQMkAGFlNzI4ZWFkLTg5NzYtNDhmNS1iNTg2LTg2MGYxNzFlMGU1OABGAAADTC9sJqt2Oky8cu3nmDqntQcAFuq%2BYBcYckuEjWyiuW%2BGBQAAAgEMAAAAFuq%2BYBcYckuEjWyiuW%2BGBQAEA2sttQAAAA%3D%3D?nativeVersion=1.2024.508.600#x__ftn1">[1]</a>&nbsp;include:

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hays welcomed&nbsp;1,310,552 trips, an 8.8% increase from 2022. The average length of visitor stay was 1.8 days.

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hays hosted&nbsp;a diverse group of visitors<a href="https://outlook.office.com/mail/inbox/id/AQMkAGFlNzI4ZWFkLTg5NzYtNDhmNS1iNTg2LTg2MGYxNzFlMGU1OABGAAADTC9sJqt2Oky8cu3nmDqntQcAFuq%2BYBcYckuEjWyiuW%2BGBQAAAgEMAAAAFuq%2BYBcYckuEjWyiuW%2BGBQAEA2sttQAAAA%3D%3D?nativeVersion=1.2024.508.600#x__ftn2">[2]</a>&nbsp;from all over the country in 2023; 52.5% of visitors were from in-state, while 47.5% came from out-of-state.&nbsp;The top three visitation markets were: Wichita, Kansas City, and Denver, Co.&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Markets with the highest visitor spend were Wichita, Denver, and Lincoln &amp; Hastings, Ne. This visitor-generated spending supports critical city services throughout our city and lowers the average tax burden on local households, in addition to supporting thousands of local jobs in hospitality-related industries.&nbsp;

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The three most popular months for visitation were July, June, and December.

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitors spent time in our hotels, attractions, shops and businesses, as well as food and beverage outlets. Some of the&nbsp;most-visited local points of interest&nbsp;include: Big Creek Crossing Mall, The Golden Q, Gella’s Diner &amp; Lb. Brewing Co., Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, and Thirsty’s Brew Pub &amp; Grill.&nbsp;

In the first few months of 2024, the CVB staff has assisted visitors from Massachusetts, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, Canada, and cities throughout Kansas.

Hays CVB celebrates National Tourism Week: What to do in Hays this summer

RUSSELL COUNTY —The National Weather Service damage survey team found two areas of tornado damage across central Kansas from Sunday's storms.

According to the National Weather Service, the first tornado rated EF1 with maximum winds of 98mph. It was on the ground northwest of Russell from 3:32 to 3:42p.m. and traveled 1.7 miles. A majority of the damage was to numerous power poles.

The second tornado was northeast of Wilson. It also rated EF1 with maximum winds of 100mph. It was on the ground from 4:20 to 4:25p.m. and traveled approximately a quarter of a mile. The winds flipped a pivot system north and south of I-70, according to the National Weather Service.

Three programs from North Central Kansas Technical College participated in the annual SkillsUSA competition in Hutchinson, KS from April 22 -26th. Competing in Welding, Diesel Technology, and Automotive Technology categories, NCK Tech emerged triumphant, with several students earning gold medals and securing their spot at the National SkillsUSA competition.

The NCK Tech Diesel Technology program from the Beloit campus showcased their skills and expertise, earning top honors in the competition. Austin Vowinckel secured a spot in the upcoming SkillsUSA national competition being held in Atlanta, GA in June.

NCK Tech student participate in SkillsUSA competition

Within the quaint confines of Ellis, the Ellis High School Alumni Association Museum stands as a testament to the rich memory of local history. Recently, the museum unveiled two captivating displays that transport visitors back in time, shedding light on the educational heritage of the area.

The first display pays homage to the country schools that once dotted the landscape of Ellis and Trego counties. Stepping into this exhibit brings back memories to a bygone era, where the sounds of school bells, clunking galvanize lunch buckets and the laughter of children echoed in a one-room schoolhouse. 

 The display has a meticulously crafted map showcasing the locations of these former educational institutions, some of which date as far back as 1879. From Beaver Bank to Stockrange, Cottonwood Grove to Silverdale, and Good Hope, the map serves as a visual testament to the widespread reach of over twenty-five schools. 

Among the artifacts adorning the exhibit are precious records and cherished items from these old schools. These relics serve as tangible reminders of the generations of families who entrusted their children's education to these rustic institutions. Visitors can marvel at old photographs, handwritten documents, and treasured mementos that offer a glimpse into the past. 

One standout piece is a remarkable model of Sunflower School, crafted by Norbert Honas, a former attendee. This detailed replica serves as a loving homage to Honas' childhood alma mater. 

Transitioning from the rural to the urban, the second display shines a spotlight on St. Mary's School, a beloved institution deeply ingrained in the local community.Among the items on exhibit are a delicate First Communion dress from 1958 that was worn by Rosabel Flax, a vibrant cheerleading uniform from Margie Mickelson and a 1963 letter jacket donated by Stan Bittel, each representing its own story and significance. These relics serve as connections to the past, with memories of academic achievements, athletic triumphs, and cherished friendships. 

As visitors wander through the rooms of the Ellis Alumni Museum, they are transported on a journey through time, reliving the cherished memories of their school days. From the beginnings of the first Alumni Association in 1901 to the present day, the museum preserves the stories of past generations. 

For those seeking to reconnect with their roots or simply indulge in a nostalgic trip down memory lane, the Ellis Alumni Museum proves to be a hidden gem, offering a captivating glimpse into the heart and soul of Ellis’ educational heritage. As the Ellis High School Alumni celebrates their 123rd Annual Banquet on Saturday, May 25th, the museum will be open from 11am-2pm and open on Sunday, May 26th from 11am-1pm.

 New displays at EHS Alumni Museum opens Memorial Weekend

LEAVENWORTH - Sierra Eichman was one of 11 students receiving a Doctorate of Occupational Therapy on May 4 from the University of Saint Mary. The university recently received accreditation for its Occupational Therapy Program for the longest possible accreditation period. Sierra was among the inaugural class receiving their OTD as part of the 101st graduating class from USM.

Sierra has completed intensive fieldwork at USD 453 in Leavenworth, Kansas, University of Kansas Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center in Kansas City, Kansas, and the Veterans Administration’s Domiciliary in Leavenworth. She also completed both inpatient and outpatient rotations at HaysMed and an outpatient pediatric rotation in 2023. Sierra recently completed her Doctoral Capstone Experience with the Leavenworth school district working with 5th and 6th grade students investigating the positive impact of sensory regulation on behavior. She drafted her capstone project entitled Sensory Regulation Programming Paired with Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum to Improve Behavior in an Educational Setting in April and presented the results of her capstone study to the public on May 3rd. In addition to her course work, Sierra was the President of the campus’ Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA), attended the 2023 national conference for the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), and was awarded the 2023 Graduate Student Leadership Award from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Sierra is preparing for her National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy examination and has accepted an Inpatient OT position with HaysMed beginning later this year.

Sierra graduated from Hays High School as a 4.0 honors student and received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Health Professions from Fort Hays State University in 2021. While at FHSU, Sierra participated in and held various leadership roles in numerous campus organizations. Additionally, she was also recognized as a 2021 graduate of the FHSU Honors College. She is the daughter of Dave and Sheila Eichman, Hays, the granddaughter of Ronald and Carol Whitehurst, Garden City, and the late Cleo and Frances Eichman, formerly of Palco.

Sometimes, the simplest things can help families stay within their monthly budget.

There are, for certain, common ways to save a few bucks this summer: turn down the air conditioner a tad, shut off the lights when you leave a room, watch less TV, draw the curtains when the sun is shining in.

But maybe there’s another way to think about saving money.

We’re coming into the longer days of summer, so think about what we can do outside that might not cost so much money, especially before it gets really hot. Maybe it’s just walking around the neighborhood, hanging out with your family outside in the yard. There are a lot of activities you can do instead of ‘doing something’ or ‘going somewhere’ that costs money.

During the recent COVID pandemic, the ‘Stay-cation’ became more popular, as families were forced to stay home rather than travel for vacation. The concept caught on, and even as the world opened up, many saw value in planning activities around their home base.

It’s a lot less stressful than traveling, and it’s a chance to unwind. Sometimes we schedule a vacation thinking we’ve got to go somewhere and we’ve got to do something and be active and that involves a lot of eating out and traveling. But there’s nothing wrong with staying around the house and doing some project, or just relaxing.

Another idea is visiting someplace close by that is unique and doesn’t involve much travel or eating out. We can always pack some food to take along especially for breakfast or lunch. And save the eating out for dinner.

Feeling time- or money-stretched is a sign that one needs to slow down and think about how they’re spending their time. It often can coincide with a boost to the family’s savings account.

When thinking about managing a family’s resources, it includes intentional, thoughtful choices that we all can make, but sometimes we get on auto pilot. Maybe we go to the grocery store and buy the same thing every week. That’s an opportunity for us to intentionally review what we’re regularly buying and eating.

There are rhythms and rituals. The rhythm of your day, the rhythm of your week and year. And then we have rituals, which are more like the daily things we do. It’s important to match the rhythms of your life to the rituals that you want in order to have a good life, and I think planning ahead can be very helpful to cut down on the stress in your life.

Food costs always seem to rise to the forefront when thinking of saving money. Planning menus each week can help consumers cut the bite of rising costs at the grocery store.

This is not all so serious that you can’t have any fun or you can’t have any treats. I think it gets back to intentionality of what it is you’re trying to accomplish.

There are ebbs and flows in managing money. We have different needs and wants. We have different income levels over time and across our lives. And so, it’s not like you make a plan that lasts forever. You plan and see how it works, and then adjust from there.

Winter weather in January wreaked havoc in the oil patch across the U.S., but until now we didn't know the extent of the slowdown here in Kansas. 

The latest numbers from the Kansas Geological Survey show glacial Kansas crude production in January, down 18% from the month before. Total output in the Sunflower State dropped from the historically low 71,000 barrels a day in December, to just over 58,000 barrels a day in January. Statewide production is down 21% from a year ago. Barton County output was down 15% from December. Ellis County dropped by 12%. Output in Russell County dropped 9% while Stafford County dipped 16%.

Baker Hughes reports a slight uptick in drilling activity for the week, with 604 active drilling rigs nationwide, an increase one oil rig. The tallies in Texas and Oklahoma were each up one while New Mexico was down two rigs.

The Kansas Rig Count is up slightly from a week ago, but down slightly from a year ago. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 31 active rigs. The tally is up one rig in eastern Kansas at 14, and unchanged west of Wichita at 17 active rigs.. Drilling was underway on Monday on a lease in Russell County.

Kansas regulators last week okayed six new drilling permits statewide. There's one in Barton County and one in Ellis County out of four in western Kansas.

Operators completed 34 wells in Kansas last week. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 15 of those were west of Wichita, including one in Barton County and one in Stafford County.

Government crude purchases for the SPR continue as commercial stockpiles drop. Weekly inventory data from the Energy Information Administration show the government bought another 600,000 barrels of crude last week in its ongoing effort to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The Energy Department sold off about half of our strategic reserves to stave off big price increases after Russia invaded Ukraine. U.S. commercial crude oil stockpiles dropped by more than 2.5 million barrels last week to 457 million as of May 10. That's about four percent below the five year average for this time of year.

Energy Information Administration reported a drop in U.S. crude production for the third week in a row. Domestic operators pumped 13,117,000 barrels per day in the week through May 10. Seasonal declines in production in Alaska account for the difference of 4,000 barrels a day from a week ago, and more, bigger differences from the last several weeks. Output has topped 13.1 million barrels a day in each of the last 16 weekly reports, and in 30 out of the last 31.

Tens of thousands of acres are charred in the province of Alberta, where wildfires spurred evacuations in the heart Canada's oil-sands industry. According to CBC News, more than 50 wildfires raged in Alberta by Tuesday, May 14.&nbsp; A provincial agency called Alberta Wildfire said the blazes grew dramatically a week earlier, when the sun came out, the humidity dissipated, and the winds shifted. No injuries have been reported.

The government reported another increase in wells drilled but uncompleted (DUC) in the nation's major shale basins. That hasn't happened for two months in a row since March of last year. It means operators drilled more wells than they completed in the seven shale basins tracked by the government. With DUCs, operators can quickly ramp up production when prices rise. The Energy Information Administration reports a total of 4,510 DUCs nationwide in April, an increase of six wells over March. The March tally was up nine wells from February.&nbsp;

The U.S. is a net petroleum exporter, but we import more crude oil than we ship out. The difference went up last week, following several weeks of declines. The Energy Information Administration reports crude imports topped exports by 2.6 million barrels a day in the week through May 10th. Domestic crude exports were down by 333,000 barrels to 4.1 million barrels a day. Crude imports averaged 6.7 million barrels a day, down about a quarter-million barrels from a week ago. The four-week average for crude exports and imports are each up about seven percent from a year ago. 

Petroleum product exports top imports by nearly 4.3 million barrels a day.&nbsp; Product imports are down more than 13% week over week, while exports dropped about ten percent.&nbsp; &nbsp;

News From the Oil Patch: January weather shuts in 18% of Kansas crude production

Beginning Tuesday, at approximately 8 a.m., Morgan Brothers Construction will begin work on pavement reconstruction on 28th Street in Hays, between Fort and Oak. 

The area will be closed to through traffic until further notice and traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed.

Update: Some customers still without power in Russell

The Southeastern Conference announced their 2024 baseball awards and Hays, Kan. native Dylan Dreiling is among the honorees.&nbsp;

Dreiling was named to the first team as an outfielder. The true sophomore recorded 61 hits while batting .333. Out of the 61 hits, 34 were for extra bases. He hit 15 doubles, 2 triples and 17 home runs.&nbsp;

Dreiling scored 53 runs and drove in 59 and registered a team high 37 walks.

The #1 ranked Volunteers won the SEC regular season title. Their first game in the SEC tournament will be on Wednesday, May 22nd.

Midwest Energy crews are still addressing power outages in Russell and areas just west of Russell Monday morning.

As of 9:45 this morning, thirty-nine customers were still without power in Russell. Eighty-five customers were listed without power west of Russell, presumably in the Gorham area.

Hays received .41 inches of rain Sunday, according to the K-State Ag Research Center south of Hays.

That puts Hays at 1.34 inches of rain for the month and 5.11 inches of precipitation year to date.

Hays still falls below the expected precipitation for the year to date, which is 7.92 inches by the end of May.&nbsp;

Isolated thunderstorms are possible across northern zones, mainly Monday night and early Tuesday. Storm coverage will be limited, but any storm may produce marginally severe wind and/or hail, according to the National Weather Service.

A slight chance of thunderstorms return Thursday and Friday.

Power outages still reported Monday; official rain report for Hays

Taco Riendos' food truck made its final stop as it transitioned into a new building to serve Latin flavors to the community.

Owners Hublester Rauda and his wife, Mirian Rauda, have been in the food business for 11 years and opened their new taco shop at 804 Main St.

Their new chapter began on April 26, 10 years after they first arrived in Hays, during which their household has also expanded.

"The family has grown," Mirian said. "That's also why we decided to undertake this new beginning because we had more help."

Originally from Dodge City, Hublester and Mirian saw an opportunity to establish themselves and leave their mark on the food scene in Hays.

Taco Riendos' former food truck resided on Vine Street and received encouragement from customers to grow beyond its mobile roots.

The family is grateful for the customers who supported Taco Riendo during its truck days, but the lack of seating contributed to their decision to expand.

"We were always busy in the truck, and the same is true here, but it has worked better because now people come to sit down for a snack," Hublester said.

With new seating came more food items, introducing dishes that were previously unavailable, such as quesabirrias, taco locos, the mega taco and the mega burrito.

"All of this is new, and everything sells very well. We are going to add more things little by little,"&nbsp;Hublester said.

Mirian said what separates Taco Riendo from other establishments is the fresh food that stays true to its Mexican authenticity.

"The most important thing for people who have not come to visit us is to try our specialty tacos," she said. "That's why we're called a taqueria."

Additional items on the menu feature churro cups, milkshakes, bolis, pina loca and a variety of burgers. The selection of premium meats includes pork, chicken, beef and beef tongue.

After relocating from Dodge City, Taco Riendos' food truck evolved to larger trucks and utilizing trailers. However, their most recent vehicle was sold to a different business.

"We still have a trailer that we only use for events like town fairs, weddings and quinceaneras,"&nbsp;Hublester said.

The taco shop has expanded its reach to places like Ellis, Ellsworth and Russell, reflecting its growing popularity and support beyond Hays.

Taco Riendos' new home comes after a significant hiatus, during which Hublester and Mirian welcomed a new family member and employee.

"We had to take a little break from the business for a year because we had a baby," Hublester said.

The family of six operates the taqueria with the help of other extended family members, ensuring top-quality food and service for the area.

Hublester and Mirian thanked God and their children for the growth and achievements they have experienced since the taco shop's relocation to Hays.

"Keep supporting us, and we'll continue giving it our all,"&nbsp;Hublester said.

Taco Riendo's is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

Severe weather-related issues cancel Monday classes in Russell

The Hays Public Library Kansas Room will undergo a remodel later this year as part of a project to update the basement. The Hays Public Library Foundation is conducting a fundraiser, beginning May 20, 2024, to cover the costs of the Kansas Room portion of the project.

The Kansas Room is a place to explore the people and history of Kansas and the Great Plains, conduct genealogy research, and attend presentations. Updates to the Kansas Room will include new furniture, flooring, lighting, and workspaces to improve the use of the room for the special collection as well as for presentations and meetings. This project is scheduled to happen in the final phase of the overall basement project, which is slated to start in August.

Donors who give a minimum of $25 will receive a special Hays Public Library sticker. A plaque will be placed in the Kansas Room with the names of those who donate $1,000 or more. Donations can be dropped off at the library or made online at&nbsp;<a href="http://hayslibrary.org/fundraiser/">hayslibrary.org/fundraiser/</a>.The last two weeks of May are the kickoff for the fundraising effort, which will continue through the year. Money raised at the 4th&nbsp;Annual Wine &amp; Cheese Fundraiser on Oct. 19 also will be designated for the Kansas Room project. Tickets for that event will go on sale Aug. 19.
