The first Apply Free Days are coming up. From Nov. 7-9, Kansas residents can apply to any state undergraduate program free of charge.

This Kansas Board of Regents initiative is hoped to remove a financial barrier for people applying to Kansas higher education institutions. Regardless of age or income, Kansas residents can apply for free to any state public university, community college, technical college, and private member institutions of the Kansas Independent College Association.

FHSU’s Director of Admissions, Jon Armstrong, said applying at FHSU is relatively simple.

“There are a lot of different ways students can apply to Fort Hays and not have to worry about the $30 application fee,” Armstrong said. In addition to the Apply Free Days, FHSU has historically offered application fee waivers for students attending FHSU admission events at their local high schools, campus visits, and FHSU recruitment events.

He said he hopes the Apply Free Days will encourage students who hadn’t considered higher education to explore the opportunities. The hope is also that students will gain more access to scholarships.

“We are more than willing to help any student apply and show them how the application process works,” he said. “The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to understand that access to higher education is not as difficult as they think it might be.”

Throughout the project, the signal lights may be intermittently flashing red, indicating a four-way stop, or even off completely. Under these scenarios the intersection may be controlled with temporary stop signs at some or all legs of the intersection. &nbsp;

Drivers are asked to use extra caution when approaching and entering the intersections. 

Avoid these areas, if possible, as travel delays can be expected. &nbsp;

Repairs are expected to be completed on or before the end of the day on Thursday.

The City of Hays regrets any inconvenience this may cause to the public. If there are any questions, please call the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

We'll end up at Municipal Park where, starting at 8 p.m., the Descendants band will play in concert, and it is free to the public.

The City of Hays Water Resources Department has contracted with CC Steel, LLC to conduct sewer line cleaning and inspections at the locations shown on the above map. 

Cleaning will begin today. The entire project should be completed by Dec. 8

Door hanger notices will be placed on homes and businesses affected prior to cleaning. 

Work will begin at the north end of the project area and proceed south until completed. 

During this process, residents may experience a rumbling sound, in addition to the possibility of water entering your sink, bathtub and/or toilet. Sewer lines can develop air pressure or a partial vacuum from the cleaning process. If you will not be home or on vacation during this time of sewer line cleaning, please protect your home by keeping your toilet lids down.

Sewer cleaning starts today in select areas of north Hays

The TMP Key Club and Kiwanis Club of Hays are proud to partner with each other for this year’s annual fall blood drive on Wednesday, November 8.

Nearly 20 spots for donating blood remain.

Those wishing to donate blood are encouraged to arrive at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School at 1701 Hall St. at least ten minutes before the appointment time unless they are checking in throught the quick pass on the Blood Donor App.

The American Red Cross sponsors numerous scholarships annually for students who volunteer time to host successful blood drives.

Currently, there are over 50 students at TMP-Marian who are participating in Key Club. The Kiwanis Club of Hays is proud to be the sponsoring Kiwanis organization for the TMP-Marian Key Club each year.

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Kansas State University will spend Nov. 7-9 visiting several county regions: Barton County, Ellis County, Norton County, Phillips County and Smith County.

The multi-day event across five counties is part of the second year of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/" target="_blank">regional community visits</a>&nbsp;across the state.&nbsp;Through the community visit initiative, K-State is engaging with people and communities across all 105 counties of Kansas.

The upcoming community visit to the five counties will include several days of activities to engage with, listen to and learn from Kansans in the&nbsp;Great Bend,&nbsp;Hays,&nbsp;Norton,&nbsp;Phillipsburg&nbsp;and&nbsp;Smith Center&nbsp;regions.

K-State leaders and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/connected-cats/" target="_blank">Connected 'Cats students</a>&nbsp;will lead several events, including community conversations, recruitment activities and events to highlight university partnerships and K-State Research and Extension relationships.

The Connected 'Cats students for the Barton County and Ellis County portion of the visit include&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/connected-cats/jocelyn-rigler.html" target="_blank">Jocelyn Rigler</a>, sophomore in biology,&nbsp;Hays, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/connected-cats/rachel-sabesta.html" target="_blank">Rachel Sebesta</a>, junior in agricultural education and global food systems leadership,&nbsp;Wilson.

FHSU Science Cafe presents portable planetarium Nov. 13 

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Cold Weather Rule, designed to help Kansans who are behind on their utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter months, began November 1 and remains in effect through March 31.

While the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer's service when the local temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees within the following 48-hour period. The Kansas Corporation Commission, the agency that regulates public utilities in the state, implemented the rule in 1983 to prevent utility companies from disconnecting a customer's natural gas or electric service during periods of extreme cold.

The Cold Weather Rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements; however, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their gas or electric company to make those arrangements.

Payment plan terms to maintain or restore service require that customers agree to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, 1/12th of the current bill, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fee, plus any applicable deposit to the utility. The remaining balance must be paid in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the current monthly bill.

The free Ellis County Community Thanksgiving Feast is moving back to the Armory, 200 Main St., this year after several years in other locations.

Meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, Thanksgiving Day. Once again, the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance is sponsoring the event.

Reservations are required by Monday, Nov. 6., to&nbsp;<a href="https://signup.com/go/eCjbPxP" target="_blank">https://signup.com/go/eCjbPxP</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;&nbsp;to (785) 623-2800.

Catering the event this year will be&nbsp;The Union Catering Company, owned by Phil Kuhn of Hays. Kuhn said his firm is delighted to be part of this year’s feast. "Thanksgiving is a huge holiday centered around food, family, and friends. That is really what the food industry is about. What better way to show that, than being a part of this event?"&nbsp;

The menu will consist of turkey, stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and a dinner roll. Cheryl Glassman, head of the ECMA organizing committee, said churches and individuals are being asked to provide desserts.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Glassman said all dinners will be served at the armory with one exception: Take-out meals will go to housing units who have pre-arranged meals for their residents.

No free transportation will be provided to the event.

Glassman said the committee decided to return to a single large venue this year because “we want it to be a community-wide unifying event. Thanksgiving and the holidays in general can be a difficult time for some people, either due to financial constraints or living alone. This event is to promote togetherness and give those in need a spiritual or physical gift. It is in giving that we can truly be thankful.”

Macey Pfeifer, executive director for First Call to Help, said her organization is coordinating the efforts of volunteers who will be needed to help make the day run smoothly. Individuals may call the above number to volunteer. She said volunteers are needed the day of the event to help set up, serve, clean tables as diners leave, and clean up afterwards.

Free sacks of groceries will be available to those in attendance, said Ben Houchen, who is coordinating the efforts to collect the groceries, sort, and sack them prior to the event. There are no income requirements to receive the free groceries, he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;The sacks will be distributed as long as supplies last.

Houchen said volunteers will be collecting non-perishable food items at Walmart and at both Dillon’s Grocery stores from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. He said people may sign up to volunteer for an hour or more at a time.

Volunteers will be sorting and sacking the groceries from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd.

“We can have 10 volunteers at a time, with one-hour time slots, and people can sign up for as long as they would like,” Houchen said. &nbsp;

On July 5, the Wild West Festival will turn into an enchanting realm as Savannah Chestnut's melodies lead the way. To commemorate their 40th Anniversary,&nbsp;SAWYER BROWN&nbsp;will perform a musical séance that promises to be an experience more than just a treat – it's a time-traveling journey through four decades of music.

Opener: Sunset Sinners HEADLINER: QUIET RIOT

As the festival crescendos into its climax on July 6, Sunset Sinners will ignite the atmosphere, creating a gateway for the legendary&nbsp;QUIET RIOT. Their headlining performance will electrify your soul, making it a night to remember for all eternity.

"We're thrilled to bring this diverse and electrifying lineup to Hays, Kansas,” said event coordinator Sandi Maier. “It's going to be a memorable Fourth of July weekend, and we can't wait to share this experience with the community and visitors from all around the region."

With the early announcement of this year’s lineup, the non-profit group behind the Wild West Festival, the all-volunteer Wild West Festival Committee, hopes to secure additional help for this year’s event and into the future.

"This festival has always been a labor of love, but we need more volunteers to join us to ensure its continued success,” said Wild West Festival Committee president Jeff Ridgeway. “We are calling on the community to support this event and keep the tradition alive."

Rising costs for entertainment and feedback from previous years have also left the committee searching for new ways to invigorate the decades-long tradition. One major piece of feedback from the community has been heard loud and clear.

"We've been tirelessly searching for a carnival to be part of the event, as it has been in the past, but unfortunately, we have found no options available,” said vice-president Tim Cossaart. “Rest assured, we are committed to creating a sustainable and exciting event for western Kansas and are exploring changes for future festivals. Stay tuned for future updates."
