LOGAN - If you enjoy sunshine and crafts, come spend a fun-filled Saturday in northwest Kansas on Highway 9. The town of Logan, home to the renovated Hansen Museum, hosts one of the best arts and crafts fairs in Kansas. 

Join the festivities on Saturday, August 19, 2023, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., when more than 57 artisans and crafters from Kansas and the surrounding states will turn the Hansen Plaza into a shopper’s paradise. 

The day kicks off with a 5K Run and 2 Mile Fun Walk. Registration and T-shirt pickup begin at 7:00 a.m. at the corner of Douglas and Main. The 5K Run starts at 8:00 a.m. with the 2 Mile Walk to follow at 8:15 a.m. All registration fees will be given to Phillips County Hospice Services. After the race, cool off in the shade and check out the crafty offerings as every booth opens for business at 9:00 a.m. Food vendors fill the air with tantalizing smells as they prepare delicious foods such as hamburgers, bratwursts, turkey and noodles, pies, barbeque, walking tacos, snow cones, kettle corn, and more. There is something tasty for every palette. Also, at 9:00 a.m., Inflate-o-Fun will be ready to entertain the children with an obstacle course, meltdown game and a jump/slide combo.

For your listening pleasure, live music on two stages can be enjoyed throughout the day. The south stage will showcase the talents of “Formerly Three” at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. alternating with “The Bent Fork Band” entertaining from the north stage at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Artisans presenting their skills around the Plaza Square throughout the day include Joy of Painting instructor Sandra Seamone; caricature sketches by Brooke Werner; basket weaving by Marsha Jensen; wheel throwing techniques on the potter’s wheel by Rodney Zimmerman; weaver Sally Brandon; pen and ink artist Julie Peterson-Shea; and fast draw shooting with the Deer Creek Regulators.

Amble across the street to the Logan Library where you can watch Janie Lowry’s Disappearing Quilts Keep Showing Up demonstration at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. On the other end of the block, Iowa chainsaw artist, Blair Smith, will astonish you with his chainsaw artistry. Blair is scheduled to carve at the service station at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. Be sure to stop and watch his amazing talent. Two of his incredible sculptures will be given away in drawings at 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

Please take time to step inside the museum and meander through the gallery. On display is Sean Kenney’s Animal Super Powers exhibition, sculptures made with LEGO bricks. This exhibit is a crowd-pleaser, so make sure to stop in the gallery for a look. 

While inside, check out the membership table to purchase or renew your Hansen Museum membership. Purchasing a membership during the Arts &amp; Crafts Fair automatically enters you in the Hansen Bucks drawings (Hansen Bucks can be spent just like cash at all Arts and Crafts Fair vendors). Hansen Bucks worth $500 will be given away in drawings held at 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Remember to stick around because you must be present to win and spend these bucks!

The Kansas Small Business Development Center is hosting workshops for women-owned small businesses on Aug. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sternberg Museum, 3000 Sternberg Drive, Hays.

The workshops are geared toward women and their partners who own or are interested in starting businesses, and for resource providers. Businesses are also welcome to bring their employees or encourage them to attend to gain valuable information.

Workshop topics include access to capital; certifications for Women-Owned Business Enterprise/Women-Owned Small Business (WBE/WOSB); branding for women-owned businesses; regional food businesses; high growth opportunities; and networking opportunities.

“We are excited about offering this opportunity in Hays,” said Laurie Pieper, assistant state director of Kansas SBDC. “This is a chance for participants to learn about issues, needs, and opportunities specifically for women-owned businesses and to share information, connections, and enthusiasm for supporting women-owned small businesses to create strong pathways for success.”

The registration fee to attend any or all the day’s workshops is $10.

On August 10, First Care Clinic and Heartland Dermatology Center will again team up to offer a free health screening and education event.

This event will take place from 4-7 p.m. at First Care Clinic located at 105 W. 13th.

 The screenings are open to the public, are free of charge, and do not require an appointment. 

Opportunities include skin cancer screenings, vision screenings, blood pressure checks, and blood glucose testing. Assistance with meal planning will also be available.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with First Care Clinic again for the upcoming health screening event, offering free skin cancer screening to raise awareness and promote early detection," said&nbsp;Tara Gillespie, APRN-C and CEO of Heartland Dermatology. "Join us in prioritizing health and empowering our community to take proactive steps towards a healthier future.”

"The purpose of a health screening event is to empower attendees with knowledge and practical strategies to lead healthier lives and take proactive steps towards preventative care," said Stephanie Burkholder, Regional Director for Heartland Dermatology.

The event is completely free of charge and the community is invited to bring their friends and family to come partake in these screenings. 

Refreshments will be served and staff from both clinics will be onsite to answer questions.

Celebrate with the Hays Public Library Foundation! The Foundation is hosting the 3rd&nbsp;Annual Wine &amp; Cheese Fundraiser on September 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hays Public Library.

The event will begin with a wine and cheese social hour, followed by a fascinating, inspiring, and fun presentation from Kansas Sampler Foundation Executive Director Marci Penner. The evening also will include a raffle and silent auction.

The Hays Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 to&nbsp;serve as a source for funding emergent and unexpected needs and events associated with the library. 

In the past the Foundation has contributed to the purchase of the bookmobile and to the 2021 library remodel. 

The library currently is working on plans to update the basement which houses most of the adult collection.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will host the 2023 Kansas Environmental Conference, taking place on August 9-10 in Manhattan, Kansas, at the Hilton Garden Inn &amp; Manhattan Conference Center. 

Kansas environmental professionals gather yearly at KEC to hear from industry professionals on key issues such as conservation, restoration and other environmental quality projects and programs carried out by industries, agencies and non-profit organizations. 

This year various sessions will provide updates on current environmental issues, technological innovations and program and regulation updates. 

Online registration is open through July 31, 2023.

“Environmental workers across the state strive to protect and improve the environment of Kansans throughout the year,”&nbsp;said Secretary Janet Stanek. “This conference is an opportunity to concentrate those efforts, bringing industry experts, environmental agencies and state employees together to collaborate and distribute information back to their communities.”

Speakers will present on a variety of topics organized into different breakout sessions. Deputy Secretary for Environment Leo Henning will kick off the conference by providing an overview of the agency and introducing Division of Environment bureau directors for program updates. Lieutenant Governor David Toland is the 2023 KEC keynote speaker and will discuss the correlation between permitting, evaluations and compliance with economic growth.

The Environmental Stewardship Award is also announced during the conference. This award recognizes projects that eliminate or reduce the generation of pollutants or wastes at the source or projects that conserve natural resources.&nbsp;

Brick repair begins Monday on two Hays streets 

MANHATTAN — The beauty of Kansas agriculture has been celebrated throughout the state’s ag industry, and we encourage photographers to capture that beauty and share it with others through the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s annual photo contest. The department began accepting photos on July 19, and will continue accepting entries through the end of August.

This year’s photo contest categories were selected to promote different aspects of Kansas agriculture:&nbsp;Farm Fresh,&nbsp;Technology in Agriculture,&nbsp;Kansas Critters, and&nbsp;Kansas Life.

 These categories allow you to showcase Kansas agriculture in many ways — the various products of our labor that feed our local communities, the scientific and technological advancements that increase efficiency and value, the many animals that play a role in agriculture, and the overall beauty of Kansas agriculture and what it means to live in this scenic state. 

For the third year, a video category will welcome drone footage, harvest videos, or other short clips of under 30 seconds that showcase Kansas agriculture. 

As always, there is a separate youth division, for young photographers under age 19. 

Prizes will be awarded to the top two winners in each of the six categories.

KDA serves to advocate for agriculture, the state’s largest industry and economic driver. Photos which best capture the categories will be used throughout the year as we tell the story of Kansas agriculture. Attendees are also invited to participate in a social event on the evening of August 16, also at the Manhattan Conference Center.

Speakers for the 2023 Ag Growth Summit will focus on broad topics that affect the whole Kansas agriculture community. 

Guests will include Chuck Conner, President and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, and Nathan Hendricks, a professor in agricultural economics at K-State who specializes in the economics of land and water. 

Workforce and water have been identified as two major areas of focus that have a significant impact on the potential for growth in Kansas agriculture, so the guest speakers and small group discussions during the day will be directed toward those two topics.

KDWP’s Special Hunts program offers hunting opportunities with limited access to public and private lands, including select refuge areas, for deer, upland game, waterfowl, doves, turkey and furbearers.

This fall and winter, KDWP is offering more than 350 individual “Special Hunt” opportunities.

The application period opened July 8, 2023, with the application draw dates as follows:

Resident or nonresident hunters may apply, though some hunts are restricted to residents only. When applying online, hunters will select hunts by species, date and category, which include “Open,” “Youth,” or “Mentored” hunts. 

All applicants are eligible to apply for Open Hunts, regardless of age or hunting experience. Youth Hunts require parties to include at least one hunter age 18 or younger, accompanied by an adult age 21 or older (who may not hunt). And Mentored Hunts are open to both youth and novice hunters supervised by a mentor age 21 or older (who may also hunt).

E-mail notifications are sent to both "successful" and "unsuccessful" applicants within two business weeks of the drawing. Successful applicants will also be emailed their hunt permit, as well as area maps and other pertinent information. Hunters are responsible for purchasing necessary licenses and permits required by law.

Victoria Community Coalition to sell popcorn balls during Herzogfest

The city of Hays has hired T&amp;T Builders to remove and replace portions of General Hays between Cody and Downing. 

The portion of General Hays between Cody and Downing will be closed starting at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28th for pavement removal and replacement with the hopes of opening back up by the end of August 2023.

GREAT BEND - Bike Brew Q will host its annual charity event this Saturday at the Expo II building at the Barton County Fair Grounds, 455 West Barton County Road in Great&nbsp;Bend and all proceeds will go to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.&nbsp;

The event features cycling rides and a mountain bike race in the morning, food trucks that start serving food at 11 a.m., and a Craft Brew Expo featuring 20 breweries from around the region from 1 to 4 p.m. with the VIP portion starting at 12:30 p.m. 

All events are independent of each other. 

Designated drivers get into the Craft Brew Expo at no charge.

There is a pretzel necklace contest as well and the winner receives two tickets to next year's Craft Brew Expo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KAYS Summer Music Showdown underway

MANHATTAN — Producers and landowners who install enduring conservation practices may qualify to receive financial assistance for these projects through a voluntary cost share program.

 The FY 2024 state cost share program for conservation practices is underway to encourage projects that improve water quality and quantity. 

Funding is provided by the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Conservation through appropriation from the State Water Plan Fund and the program is administered by Conservation Districts across the state.

Landowners and producers with natural resource concerns on their property are encouraged to visit their local conservation district office to discuss the possibility of receiving state financial assistance. 

Along with the annual funding, additional funding is available this year to landowners and producers interested in eligible water resources practices such as irrigation water management, nutrient management, planting cover crops, livestock water supplies, cross fencing, and abandoned well plugging.

Landowners and producers who are approved for the program will be notified of the practice(s) approval and the estimated amount of cost-share that will be provided. Projects started or completed prior to being approved for funding by individual districts and KDA–DOC are not eligible for these funds.

Applications for cost share funds must be made through local conservation districts; please contact your district office for details about funding eligibility.
