The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Monday in the area of Hall St. to Highway 183 Bypass between 27th St. and 43rd St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.

WAKEENEY — The WaKeeney Police Department is accepting cash donations for the annual bike rodeo, sscheduled for 2 p.m. April 22. 

Contact the WaKeeney Police Department at (785) 743-5711 if you are able to make a donation for this event. Officers will gladly accept any donation in person at the police department. 

All donations will go directly to the Recreation Commission to purchase bicycles for the bike rodeo.

WaKeeney PD accepting donations for annual bike rodeo

LOGAN - Join us in the Hansen Museum Community Room for a free historic adventure as author Dr. James Kenyon, D.V.M., presents his book “Golden Rule Days” on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. 

James Kenyon is a native Kansan who grew up on a farm caring for cattle, pigs, chickens, and horses in Graham County, Kansas, and graduated from Bogue Rural High School in 1966. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree at Kansas State University in 1975. Tied to Logan, Kenyon is a second cousin to the late Rose Gulick who served as the Logan city librarian for many years.

<a href="https://www.jamesrkenyon.com/">Dr. Kenyon’s book </a>about former Kansas high schools represents 12 trips to all 105 Kansas counties and contains one story from each county. This journey is a statewide perspective of the sociological and geographical changes in Kansas. Kenyon traveled on highways, county roads, gravel, and dirt roads to see old schools, if they were still standing, and talk to the people who attended these schools. During the presentation, Kenyon will review history by recounting charming and sometimes poignant stories connected to these old institutions.

In retirement, Dr. Kenyon has authored several books: “The Art of Listening to the Heart,” published in 2017; “A Cow for College and Other Stories of 1950s Farm Life” in 2018; “Golden Rule Days, History and Recollections of 109 Closed Kansas High Schools,” which was named winner of the 2018 Martin Kansas History Book Award; “Echoes in the Hallways, History and Recollections of 99 Closed Iowa High Schools” in 2021; and “Kansas City Kitty” in the fall of 2021.

Graham Co. author to discuss his book 'Golden Rule Days' at Hansen Museum

A modern Paraguayan music concert will be held&nbsp;Tuesday, April 11th at 7 pm in Studio 809, 809 Main St., Hays.

Guest artist Daniel Ayala, Paraguay, is coming to Kansas to perform, teach, and share stories about his music journey. Ayala and he is a pianist/composer specialized in jazz and modern music.&nbsp;

For Tuesday’s concert, Ayala will be collaborating with Emporia State University faculty violinist Ramiro Miranda.

This concert is free and open to the public. 

The music for this concert includes Ayala’s original compositions and arrangements of Paraguayan music, which includes an array of styles based in the bebop language, modal jazz, Latin and avant-garde.

Daniel Ayala is faculty at the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion and the Instituto Superior de Bellas Artes, teaching contemporary piano in both institutions. Ayala studied classical piano with Dr. Reena Natenberg at Pittsburg State University and jazz/contemporary piano and improvisation with Dr. Whitney Ashe at Western Illinois University. He has played alongside important figures of jazz such as Village Vanguard Orchestra, Michael Weiss, Aaron Kipola, Don Norton, Dan Miller and Alan Baylock among others. Native of Paraguay, his music includes an array of styles that combine jazz with traditional Paraguayan music, heavily based in improvisation. He is active in the Paraguayan music scene with his quartet playing classic and modern standards rooted in the bebop, post-bop, modal jazz, Latin jazz and swing tradition as well as original compositions. In 2021, he recorded his first album as a pianist and composer with his quintet (piano, guitar, alto sax, bass and drums) called “Sugestión” available in all music platforms.

Guest speaker Scott Finney will join us virtually to discuss Eisenhower's role during the Suez Crisis of 1956. 

President Eisenhower made a very difficult decision to not provide the British with military support. Three key factors weighed heavily in Eisenhower's decision. Primarily, he feared the situation would turn into a full scale war involving the Soviet Union. Additionally, he felt the British government miscalculated the level of threat posed by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Finally, he knew that Anglo-American relations would be damaged and in need of repair if the United States withheld support of its closest ally during WWII. Despite these difficulties, Eisenhower made his decision and employed sound crisis leadership skills in working through the crisis.&nbsp;

Finney is a doctoral thesis candidate completing his Ph.D. online through Manchester Metropolitan University in England.&nbsp;Scott was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and just recently visited the Eisenhower Presidential Library to complete research for his Doctoral thesis.

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a field survey for a proposed bridge replacement project along U.S. 36 in eastern Phillips County starting the week of April 17.

The bridge, which spans the Kyle Railroad, is located approximately 13 miles east of the U.S. 183 junction, or 2 miles east of Agra. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects work to be complete in early July.

A member of the survey crew will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed. John Sommers of JEO will oversee the survey for KDOT.

Antique tractor pull in Schoenchen is April 15

COLBY — This year's Spring Art Walk hosted by the Colby Community College art department will be set up throughout the college campus on Friday, April 21, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Artwork will also be displayed at Jonas Gallery and Donelan Jewelry on Franklin Avenue in downtown Colby.&nbsp;

The show features original works by professional artists and students from CCC and area K-12 public and private schools. Art will span the quad and hang in adjacent buildings around the center of campus. Many pieces are available for purchase.&nbsp;

"Ruth Ellen Lynch and her band are set to play jazz music all evening by the clock tower,"&nbsp;said CCC art instructor Rebel Mahieu."People should bring a chair and blanket so they can stay for a while and listen."

Additional highlights include a maze, food vendors, caricature drawings,&nbsp;an aluminum pour demonstration, face painting, and other activities.

ABILENE - Race organizers are preparing for the 2023 Eisenhower Marathon.

The Marathon will be April 29, in Abilene. The race will start in Old Abilene Town and offers 5k, 10k, Half-Marathon, and Full-Marathon options.

The race began in 2003 under the leadership of June DeWeese and was one of only a handful of marathons in the Midwest. Today, Steve Cathey serves as race organizer. A Boston Marathon Qualifying Course, runners from 27 states are registered for the “fast and mostly flat” race.

&nbsp;“People love running the Eisenhower Marathon,” Cathey said. “Many people set personal records on this course.”

&nbsp;Another reason runners love coming to Abilene is the hospitality.&nbsp;

“The event&nbsp;provides big race swag and small-town hospitality; runners coming to town become part of the Abilene family!” he said. “Over the past three years of being the director, we have had many returning runners due to the amazing support of our staff on race day, making everything enjoyable for the participants!”

A race of this size wouldn’t be possible without community support.

Saturday will be the last date to connect with local legislators representing Ellis County. Doors will open at 8 a.m. at&nbsp;the Hays Public Library. Coffee and scones provided by Breathe Coffee House will be served from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., with the official program commencing at 8:30 a.m. Legislators will provide opening remarks and share their committee&nbsp;assignments, provide a question and answer forum, and conclude with closing remarks.

Kansas Sen. Rick Billinger, R-Goodland, and&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, have confirmed&nbsp;attendance, with Kansas Rep Ken Rahjes’&nbsp;presence pending. Rahjes is a Republican from Agra.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has restricted traffic to one lane on the K-23 bridge located approximately 10 miles north of Hoxie in Sheridan County for emergency repairs.

The Post Nine, vintage base ball team of Historic Fort Hays, will play the Hays City 9 team at p.m. Saturday, April 22. &nbsp;The game will take place at Historic Fort Hays.

Since forming the Post Nine club in 2017, suiting up the club with vintage style uniforms, bats and&nbsp;following&nbsp;1869 base ball rules the Post Nine&nbsp;team&nbsp;has hosted and played games with vintage teams from Wichita, Topeka, Denver, Emporia&nbsp;&nbsp;and Hays — Larks alumni and Hays City 9.

If you like to run or walk and would like to meet others with similar interests, then the Hays Area Road Runners might be for&nbsp;you. &nbsp;HARR members&nbsp;meet&nbsp;on&nbsp;Tuesdays&nbsp;at various locations around Hays&nbsp;(often at the former Hays Daily News building, 507 S.&nbsp;Main), but also in Plainville and Ellis. Green Ribbon Hays announces Green Ribbon Conversations for parents, caregivers, teachers, and others who work with middle school students. 

These conversations will be led by Patrick McGinnis to help participants connect better with the kids in their lives.

Parents can learn to talk to middle school kids tonight at Hays library

LOGAN — In-person high school theater workshops offered by the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation are returning this summer.

Each weeklong musical theater workshop is open to high school students (incoming high school freshman through outgoing college freshman).&nbsp; In just five days, participating students will conceive, write, choreograph, compose, design, rehearse and perform an original piece of musical theatre in collaboration with a staff of professional artists. There will be three workshops this June, including a residential option.

June 5-9 – Hays Residential Camp (Fort Hays State University)

New this year, Lovewell is offering a residential camp experience at Fort Hays State University. Students arrive on Sunday evening, June 5, and stay in the residence hall on campus. The performance will be Friday evening, June 9, at the Felten Theater in Malloy Hall, followed by checkout. Students who wish to participate in this workshop without staying in the dorms may register as day camp participants.

June 12 – 16 – Concordia (Brown Grand Theater)

June 19 – 23 – Phillipsburg (Huck Boyd Center)

Students from surrounding communities and counties are encouraged to participate in a workshop closest to them.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The week-long day camp/workshop brings students from all different creative backgrounds together to create an original work of musical theatre from scratch. While the performance is an enormous part of the workshop, the focus is on the creative process. No previous music or theater experience is required. To make it come together, the process needs writers, actors, poets, dancers, singers, dreamers, visual artists, musicians, composers, designers, and creative students of ALL kinds.

The students will work with a team of professional artists to help utilize all the students’ gifts and explore the arts while forging new friendships and making memories to last a lifetime.

This is the sixth summer the Lovewell workshops have been offered in Kansas.&nbsp; Lovewell offers students an opportunity to explore music and theater in a unique way. The response from the students and faculty in previous summers has been overwhelmingly positive.

Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts is a not-for-profit organization that brings students together with professional artists to conduct these unique and transformational workshops. The Lovewell team are artist who make their living as musical directors, play writes, choreographers, composers, lyricists, etc.

Creative arts institute to offer first summer camp in Hays

On Sunday, April 16, at 3 p.m. Trinity Lutheran Church, 2703 Fort, Hays, will be holding an Easter service in the German language.&nbsp; 

This service is much the same as the services that were held by the Lutheran Russian-German immigrants who came to Ellis, Barton and Russell counties.&nbsp; 

The service will be led by Rev. Delvin Strecker, whose family emigrated to the Barton county area of Kansas from the Lutheran area along the Volga River in Russia. He grew up speaking the Volga German dialect but learned to speak High German and was a high school German teacher until he retired and went to seminary.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Even though the Volga Germans who came to this area did not speak High German, the worship services were held in High German because their hymnals, catechisms and Bibles were written in High German.&nbsp; Pastor Strecker’s sermon will be in High German but he will conclude his sermon making some comments in the Volga German dialect. Come join us as we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord using the German language. There will be a time for fellowship following the service.&nbsp;

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Monday in the area of Hall St. to Oak St. between 7th St. and 17th St. also Vine St. to Canterbury Dr. between 22nd St. and 33rd St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.&nbsp;
