The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is
announcing that a bridge deck repair project will be taking place in the 2600
block of Highway 40, between 350th Avenue and Vincent Avenue.

The area will be closed to through traffic beginning at 8:00
a.m. on Monday, August 28th and will reopen by 5:00 p.m. on the same day.

Applications are still open for employers in northwest Kansas interested in a Fort Hays State University spring or summer intern.

Thanks to a grant from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, funding was made possible for paid internships during the 2023-24 academic year, including the summer 2024 term.

Applications for spring and summer interns will be accepted through September 15th.

Eligible employers must be located within the Hansen Foundation’s 26-county service area: the block of counties stretching from the Cheyenne-Wallace County east, including the Republic-Saline County area and Ellsworth County. It includes Ellis County.

NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to start work on multiple resurfacing projects in Trego County the week of Aug. 28.

Project work will include milling and overlay on the following roads:

• K-198 from the I-70 junction to the east city limits in Collyer WaKeeney business loop: U.S. 283 at I-70 (Exit 127) north to Barclay Ave., east on Barclay Ave. to the U.S. 40B junction, then south on U.S. 40B to I-70 (Exit 128)

• K-147 from 1,600 feet south of P Road to P Road near the Big Creek bridge crossing&nbsp;

• Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zones and directed by flaggers and a pilot car in some areas during daylight hours. Drivers are advised to plan for delays of 5 minutes or less.

KDOT expects the projects to be completed by the end of September, conditions permitting.

APAC-Kansas Inc., Shears Division, of Hutchinson is the primary contractor with a combined contract cost of approximately $1.8 million.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas is proud to offer a new service called Shared Living. Shared Living is a nationally recognized model for residential services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 

In Shared Living, one or two individuals share a home with a family or single adult’s family. The family (or contractor) provides support to individual(s) in accordance with their person-centered support plan. 

The agency provides training and ongoing support every step of the way by ensuring a good and rewarding experience.&nbsp;

This newly-opened Shared Living model is an individualized Family-style form of residential services. This extended family atmosphere plays a significant role in supporting people with special needs in their everyday lives.

 “DSNWK will work to match individuals with a family who have similar interests and lifestyles,” states Sara Biggs, director of programs and services. “Our goal is to now offer persons with disabilities this model of individualized support, love, and learning in a family environment.”&nbsp;

Shared Living homes give people (contractors) the opportunity to earn a living while helping someone else live their best life. 

This opportunity will also give these independent contractors the ability to be home more, spend more time with family, and make a meaningful difference in their community and in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.&nbsp;

Beginning Tuesday at 8 a.m. through Wednesday at 5 p.m. Proseal Inc., Augusta, will begin application of an asphalt rejuvenator on various streets throughout the city. 

"No streets will be completely closed," Jesse Rohr, public works director, said Friday. "Traffic will be reduced and slowed to one lane at times."

 The two-day project is part of the Hays' 2023 street maintenance plan.

The asphalt rejuvenator application is a preservative seal that is used on newer asphalt streets that do not yet warrant more advanced treatment. 

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to be moved from the street by 8:00 a.m. Streets being sealed will be partially closed for a short duration during the time of the application. Access can be achieved in cases of emergency. Parking on adjacent streets is recommended during the daytime.&nbsp;  Parking in driveways is okay if you DO NOT plan on moving the vehicle during the daytime hours.

After application, the surface should not be driven on until the fine overlay of sand is applied.&nbsp; 

If tracked upon before curing is complete, the product may stain surfaces such as concrete, carpet, or flooring if tracked from construction areas.&nbsp; 

Please have all lawn watering devices turned off the evening before the scheduled date.&nbsp; Please help keep the streets clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project.&nbsp; 

Traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed and picked up by the end of the work day.&nbsp;

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Hays High School will have a Back-to-School Party from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the football field on the Hays High campus.

Speaking will be Pastor Russell Kirkpatrick from High Plains Baptist Church and Vinny Walker, the Indians’ football running backs coach.

The event will also feature games and, from 7 to 8 p.m., free sno-cones. Food will be available for purchase from The Local Food Truck. Prayer tents will also be set up, said the club’s sponsor, Dave Buller.

Buller said churches are being asked to bring and distribute water bottles at the event. Churches willing to do this may contact him at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:davebuller28@yahoo.com">davebuller28@yahoo.com</a>.

The group’s regular meeting time during the school year will be at 7:15 a.m. every Thursday in the school’s library. “You do not have to be an athlete to attend,” he emphasized.

Southern block of Milner Street in Hays to be closed for repair

GREAT BEND - The Shafer Art Gallery at Barton Community College will unveil a sculpture to add to its permanent collection by world-renowned artist Kris Kuksi of Lawrence as well as its next exhibit “Posters: A Shafer Gallery Retrospective” at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Shafer Gallery and will feature light refreshments and comments from retiring Gallery Director Dave Barnes.

Barnes said adding a piece from Kuksi, a Fort Hays State University graduate, to the gallery’s collection is the perfect way to cap off his time as the director.

“In the words of world renown filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, Kris Kuksi is ‘a post-industrial Rococo master, (who) obsessively arranges characters and architecture with an exquisite sense of drama,’” he said. “Over the span of Kuksi’s career, his works have been featured in many magazine publications such as Hi Fructose, Juxtapoz, Wild, and many others. Kuksi’s art has attracted many public and private collectors in the United States, Europe, The Middle East, and Australia. Kuksi received an Emmy for his work on the main title sequence for the series ‘Black Sails.’"

Barnes said he is excited because this is a one-of-a-kind piece of art in every way.

“Kuksi has made a piece of art dedicated to, inspired by, and designed expressly for the Shafer Art Gallery,” he said. “The piece is called ‘Where the Old West Meets the Future’ and will be unveiled for the first time at the ribbon cutting. I am very excited to have this piece enter our permeant collection. I can’t think of a finer, more meaningful way to end my time at the Gallery. Like the Gus Shafer bronzes, this work is a defining benchmark in the Gallery's public evolution and growing prestige.”

Barnes said the “Posters” exhibit will showcase selected posters that were designed to advertise some of the exhibits the gallery has had during his 13-year tenure.&nbsp;

“A poster can also document the journey and progress of an institution,” he said. “A really good poster makes us curious and stimulates our critical thinking, but it also moves us on an unconscious emotional level. You see, a poster is also a work of work.”

SALINA — 24/7 Travel Store is gearing up for its annual Food Bank Fill-Up campaign. The program will roll out Sept. 1 and run all month long in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month and in support of nine Kansas food banks.

 In its sixth year, the program has returned with a goal to raise another $60,000 ($6,000 per store) in the fight against hunger.

“We are anticipating another successful year with this program. Last year was the program’s fifth anniversary and we were blown away by the support we received. 

"We raised over $71,000 for the nine Kansas communities we serve. It was our most successful campaign to date," said Jackie Hynes, director of marketing.

On September 23, National Hunger Action Day— for one day only, 24/7 Travel Store locations will have food bank representatives onsite during select times accepting food items and monetary donations. 

“We encourage community members to plan their giving on this day, if possible. To take the opportunity to come inside and visit with their local food bank representative. Perhaps learn other ways they can be supportive or calm any doubts about the Food Bank Fill-Up funds donated staying local. We hosted this event last year and it was our biggest fundraising day, bringing in $3,674 collectively,” said Hynes.

24/7 Travel Store annual food bank fill-up to benefit area food banks 

GRAHAM COUNTY - Antelope Lake, an 80-acre public fishing impoundment, is located approximately 14 miles west of Hill City.

 The lake and surrounding park is owned by Graham County and the fishery is managed cooperatively by the county and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

As part of fish management activities, KDWP collects fish population and angler use data at Antelope Lake. Standard sampling results reveal bluegill growth is relatively rapid. 

But creel survey results indicate bluegill are harvested by anglers at a relatively high rate. Taken together, angler harvest may limit bluegill population size structure quality.

To improve bluegill and other sunfish population dynamics at Antelope Lake, KDWP has implemented a 6 to 9 inch protected slot length limit on all sunfish species, including bluegill, green sunfish, redear sunfish, and their hybrids, a five-fish daily creel limit on sunfish nine inches and longer, and an unlimited daily creel limit on sunfish six inches and shorter.

Special sunfish harvest regulations implemented at Antelope Lake

The Kiwanis Club of Hays is hosting a family-friendly event this August 26 at the Kiwanis Park, 1314 Harvest Road.  

  Families are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items that will be collected to donate to the Community Assistance Center. 

 Bottled water will also be available for free at the park this Saturday.

Fentanyl community conversation slated in Hays for Sept. 21

Grow Hays, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the ‘Think Like an Entrepreneur’ - Ice House Entrepreneurship Program offered in Ellis County starting September 20. Sessions will be&nbsp;held over eight weeks, Wednesdays September 20 through November 8.

 The goal of the course is to teach participants to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Taught by Kris Munsch, a certified Ice House facilitator, this interactive 8-week program provides practical entrepreneurial lessons through first-hand experiences of successful, real-life entrepreneurs. Based on the book,&nbsp;Who Owns the Ice House, this curriculum consists of case studies along with individual assignments, assessments, and discussion topics. This popular course is offered only a handful of times per year across the state and Grow Hays is excited to have local Kris Munsch teaching the course.

"To think like an entrepreneur, you need to begin at the beginning.&nbsp;The beginning is "what is a mindset?"&nbsp; I believe we need that understanding, a foundational building block of self.&nbsp; From there, we can seek, explore, and build our path,, Kris Munsch, Ice House facilitator.

The program fee runs $150 for adults and $75 for students and covers catered meals. We are offering an early bird price of $100 if signed up and paid by September 8th.&nbsp;Registration is limited, and in-county attendees will have priority to fill the course. Out of county attendees are welcome to register but may be put on a waiting list. The deadline to register is Thursday, September 15.

Hays area employers seeking to fill part-time positions or internships are invited to attend the Part-time Job Fair at Fort Hays State University on Wednesday, August 23, from 2 to 4 p.m.

There is no cost to participate, but employers must register no later than August 18 by phone (785-628-4260) or email (careers@fhsu.edu). Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.

Businesses and organizations will have an opportunity to share information with students about part-time jobs or internships that are available.

Part-time job fair set for Aug. 23 at FHSU

The Ellis County Environmental Services Department opens a new construction and demolition pit on Wednesday

The opening of the new pit marks the completion of an over two-year long project. 

Land for the Ellis County Landfill expansion was purchased back in 2020. Time from the land acquisition to today was spent obtaining permitting and completing construction. 

Construction of the expansion was entirely completed by Ellis County employees, equating in more than $100,000 of savings in the Solid Waste budget.&nbsp;

The new construction and demolition cell is split into a southern and northern half. Presently, dumping is only permitted in the southern portion. The dumping area will progress south, until its full. At that time, dumping will begin filling in the north. 

This new cell is projected to last approximately eight years, and future expansion cells are already planned for the property.&nbsp;

The new cell is located at the Ellis County Landfill, 1515 W. 55th St., Hays.

 Customers will follow normal check-in procedures at the scale house, then continue west past the former construction and demolition pit. From the former pit, follow the curve to the north.

“Go slow and keep right as you enter the new landing area,” says Solid Waste Director Justin Craig. "Be mindful of other drivers, as this is a new practice for everyone.” 

All dumping will be at the south face of the landing area. 

Drivers are directed to pull into the area to the north, and back vehicles south. When exiting, keep right, take your time, and watch for traffic while exiting the area back to the scale house. Solid waste staff are available at the scale house to answer questions or provide guidance if needed.&nbsp;

Accepted material at the construction and demolition pit includes, but is not limited to concrete, wood, drywall, roofing materials, bricks, fiberglass, and additional construction and demolition debris. 

The current tipping fee is $45 per ton, with a $10 minimum (440 pounds or less). 

Ellis County Solid Waste operating hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday. No dumping is allowed 15 minutes prior to close.&nbsp;
