There is an urgent need for blood donations right now, to meet the needs of patients in hospitals as surgical procedures and treatments that were temporarily paused earlier this spring in response to COVID-19 resume. At the same time, blood drives continue to be canceled, as many businesses and community organizations restrict the number of individuals at their locations, which creates challenges for a stable blood supply

St. John Lutheran Church, 425 N. Main, Russell, will host a blood drive Sunday, June 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Weekend blood drives in rural areas are not common, and provide an opportunity to donate blood for individuals whose schedules do not allow them to donate during a weekday drive.

A recent statement by the American Red Cross announced all blood, platelet and plasma donations will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies starting June 15, 2020. The antibody test is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed symptoms. 

For the next few months, Red Cross blood, platelet and plasma donations will be tested using samples obtained at the time of donation and sent to a testing laboratory, where the samples will also undergo routine screening and infectious disease testing. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity. 

The Red Cross has implemented additional measures to ensure blood drives are safe for donors and staff. 

· Checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering to make sure they are healthy

· Providing hand sanitizer for use before and throughout the donation process

· Following social distancing between donors including entry, donation and refreshment areas

· Ensuring face basks or coverings are worn by both staff and donors

· Routinely disinfecting surfaces, equipment and donor touched areas

· Wearing gloves, and changing gloves often

· Using sterile collection sets and an aseptic scrub for every donation

Individuals who would like to donate are asked to make an appointment online at <a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/">redcrossblood.org</a> or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule a time that works for them. Appointments allow the American Red Cross to exercise social distancing and provide good donor services.

Mathews and Sandy Seamone to the Hansen Museum Community Room to teach two Joy of Painting classes on June 27 and 28. On Saturday, June 27, the class will paint “The Old Pump,” and on Sunday, June 28, “Magic Dragon." Class will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.&nbsp;

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. T.R. and Sandy learned from the happy tree guy himself, and their tag-team approach to teaching creates a relaxing and light-hearted atmosphere. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels.&nbsp;

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation, in partnership with the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts, is pleased to announce two virtual high school summer theater workshops this summer.

Lovewell artists were originally scheduled to offer seven in-person workshops this summer, the third year of Lovewell Kansas. Due to the Coronavirus, the in-person workshops were canceled for the safety of our students. But creativity is not defined by in-person events!

The Foundation and Lovewell are excited to announce 2 online Lovewell Workshops (one week each) for NW Kansas high school students (those exiting 8th&nbsp;grade through graduating seniors).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Workshops dates are: June 22-26; and July 6-10, from 1pm to 4pm online. Students can participate in one or both.

Students will work with Los Angeles artists (and Kansas workshop favorites) Amber Allgyer and Eric Flemons to create a mini-musical or a themed song cycle. Other artists from around the globe are likely to pop in as well.

The final video product will be presented virtually and also be part of the Lovewell summer of 2020 around the world video.

Hays Christian Church is hosting a free drive-through smile and hygiene kit giveaway on Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Hays Christian Church parking lot, 22nd &amp; Marshall Road. 

Each individual will receive a smile kit donated by Delta Dental, soap and deodorant. 

In addition, each family can enter to win a bag full of groceries that will be given away at the conclusion of the event. 

A total of three grocery bags will be given away, limit one entry per household. 

The kits and giveaway are open to anyone in the community. Kits are limited to supply on hand.

Smile Kit giveaway Saturday at Hays Christian Church

Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, are looking for vendors for the two-day event. The Annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, in Municipal Park.

The raising of steins and wearing lederhosen will be part of the 2020 Oktoberfest Hays. The free admission event will feature two days packed with many German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing and more. &nbsp;

Registration is open for vendors to become an integral part of a long-standing Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. Oktoberfest provides the opportunity to expose businesses to a diverse demographic, due in part to the multitude of activities offered for every age and family size.

Businesses, artists, community groups and crafts vendors are invited to register for booth spaces. Vendors contribute to the Oktoberfest spirit and tradition by showcasing German-style crafts, activities, or foods into their vendor space.&nbsp;

The Annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, in Municipal Park.The raising of steins and wearing lederhosen will be part of the 2020 Oktoberfest Hays. The free admission event will feature two days packed with many German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing and more. &nbsp;Registration is open for vendors to become an integral part of a long-standing Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. Oktoberfest provides the opportunity to expose businesses to a diverse demographic, due in part to the multitude of activities offered for every age and family size.Businesses, artists, community groups and crafts vendors are invited to register for booth spaces. board members and staff of nonprofit organizations in the foundation’s
26-county service area in northwest Kansas. 

The workshops will be presented by Nancy Jackson of Generous
Change, Lawrence.&nbsp; Nancy started her own nonprofit, has served on dozens
of boards, raised tens of millions of dollars, and supported board members all
across Kansas. 

The workshop is designed to help board members and staff feel comfortable
helping to raise funds for the nonprofit organizations they serve. Each
workshop will include a light meal, and couple hours of conversation and
laughter. 

For those who wish are not sure about gathering yet, Nancy
will lead two, interactive virtual workshops on Wednesday,
June 17, 7-9 p.m., and Monday, June 22, 7-9 p.m.&nbsp;This is the same workshop, offered twice.

For those who are comfortable gathering, Nancy will lead seven,
interactive in-person workshops for nonprofit board members and staff.

The Fort Hays State University Science and Mathematics Education Institute is offering free online summer activities with G.G. Launchbaugh, FHSU SMEI Makerspace/Makervan director and staff.&nbsp;

Free online summer science activities for kids at FHSU SMEI

Backpacks For Kids is&nbsp;accepting donations now&nbsp;&nbsp;for 2020. 

Donors can go to the First Call for Help website at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.firstcallelliscounty.com/school-supplies-needed">https://www.firstcallelliscounty.com/school-supplies-needed</a>&nbsp;for a list of supplies. If they prefer not to shop,&nbsp;monetary donations are also appreciated. Please write B4K or Backpacks For Kids in the memo line of the check.

Registration for a backpack with school supplies and hygiene bags are now open for Ellis County students in grades pre-K through high school. 

There are three ways to register,&nbsp;online&nbsp;at­­­­­­­­­­­­­<a href="https://www.firstcallelliscounty.com/backpacks-registration-form" target="_blank">https://www.firstcallelliscounty.com/backpacks-registration-form</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;call&nbsp;First Call For Help&nbsp;or&nbsp;complete a registration page and mail it&nbsp;to FCFH. The&nbsp;registration deadline is July 24.

The&nbsp;Backpacks For Kids Distribution Day will be&nbsp;from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.&nbsp;on Thursday, Aug. 6 at the Presbyterian Church&nbsp; for registered students only.

Laura Shoaff, project coordinator, said she anticipates the economic effects of COVID-19 will result in more families needing assistance this year.

“I definitely think we will see an increase in need this year due to parents abrupt loss of jobs or layoffs caused by COVID-19," she said. "Many parents are struggling to pay their rent and utilities. &nbsp;If there is no money coming in or they are waiting on severance pay, it’s difficult to stay caught up.

"Now that restrictions have been lifted, some people who were fortunate enough to report back to work are experiencing a cut in hours, which also affects them financially."

&nbsp;Shoaff said&nbsp;First Call For Help was blessed to have donors who sent monetary donations for the agency to assist more Ellis County families in need with their rent, utilities or food. 

"However, now we’re seeing less donations for Backpacks For Kids, which I’m hoping will increase in the next few weeks so we’re able to purchase the supplies we need for backpacks and hygiene bags," she said. 

Last year, the agency distributed 671 backpacks to Ellis County students in grades pre-K through high school. 

"If you are financially strained and your child is going to need a new backpack with supplies in August," Shoaff said, "make sure you register before July 24. Kids who are registered will be guaranteed a backpack and hygiene bag as long as we have the financial means or donations to complete them all.”

bridge repair project will take place in the 1400 block of 310th Avenue — between Airbase Road and Vineyard Road. 

This one-mile stretch
of road will be closed to through traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday and will remain closed until the project is completed. The expected completion
date is Thursday, pending weather conditions. Motorists traveling in
the affected closure area should use alternate routes of travel until the project
is complete.

The annual First Responders Appreciation Barbeque is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Frontier Park.

Knights will honor first responders at weekend barbecue

From Sept. 3, 2018, through Aug. 9, 2019, the Hays Police Department recovered 31 bicycles of various makes, models and styles. 

Please contact the Hays Police Department at (785) 625-1030 if you believe any of these bikes may belong to you. 

After 10 days from this notice, all unclaimed property will be disposed of in accordance with Section 26-21 of the City of Hays Code of Ordinances.
