The<a href="https://www.alz.org/"> Alzheimer's Association's</a> Walk to End Alzheimer's is happening in Hays on Saturday, October 10 and in Victoria on Saturday, October 17.

 We are walking everywhere — on city sidewalks, hiking trails, paths, and treadmills to honor those we love who are currently battling Alzheimer’s, the 6th leading cause of death in America.

 We are raising money toward finding a cure, so others don’t have to face the same heartbreak as my family and many others have. I encourage everyone to get out and walk on October 10th and October 17th, wear purple and fundraise so that someday we will be celebrating the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. 

October 10 is the Hays Walk kickoff in downtown Hays at the Union Pacific Plaza from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 am. The Hays Accessible Recreation Complex (ARC Park)
will provide safe, boundless play opportunities for individuals of all ages and all abilities in one accessible spot. There is not currently a fully accessible play
 space of this scope and size anywhere in western Kansas. 

Construction will begin on phase 1 — a 15,500-square-foot playground. The $750,000-project has been in development for two years by The Arc of Central Plains and was funded entirely from private donations
 within the community.&nbsp;

Outdoor play stimulates speech, cognition, gross motor skills, fine motor skills and social skills more efficiently
 than any other method of instruction. The play space also will promote self-empowerment and imaginative play for all kids, while allowing children with disabilities to play safely alongside peers.
 Construction of the playground is slated to finish in April. Dirt work, playground equipment, and concrete work will be installed before end of the year; however, the synthetic flooring is weather-contingent and can't be installed until the spring.


The ARC Park complex will eventually include phases 2 and 3 — an accessible recirculated splash pad and an all-ability turf baseball field, respectively. Fundraising continues

ARC Park groundbreaking scheduled for Friday

Local Knights of Columbus members will hand out Tootsie Rolls in front of many Hays businesses Oct. 9-11 during the 50th annual Tootsie Roll drive to help people with intellectual disabilities.

Eighty percent of the donations from Tootsie Roll weekend stays in Hays and is given to local organizations that work with these special citizens.

The balance of the collections is given to the state "Commitment to Humanity" fund, which helps finance projects such as the Special Olympics.

Last year the Knights of Columbus gave $23,000 to the Kansas Knights of Columbus Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.&nbsp;

K of C Tootsie Roll Drive scheduled for this weekend

Funded by an EllisCARES grant, First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall St., Hays, is offering a safe, supervised and distanced alternative for remote/hybrid learning to all middle and high school students enrolled in the Ellis County school districts. 

The free program will run from October 5- December 14, 2020.

We know that districts, teachers, students and families are facing unprecedented challenges. 

We hope that this option helps relieve lack of access to adequate internet, social isolation and family stress with students home alone for those who are using hybrid or remote learning options. 

The remote learning staff will providing instructional support, encouragement, and maintain health and safety guidelines.

The building is fully accessible on one level with a dedicated entrance and dedicated restrooms.

The Wi-Fi-enabled hall will accommodate up to 20 preregistered middle and high school students in 3 ½ hour blocks. 

There will be separate morning and afternoon groups Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-3:00pm. If there is a need, hours can be expanded to include some evenings and weekends.

Attendance will be recorded. Masks will be required for all inside the building. Distanced seating will be assigned. A full kitchen is on site for storing lunch and snacks brought by the students.

What is the secret to staying positive? Staying positive when times are tough is much easier said than done.&nbsp; Living a healthy lifestyle is very important but maintaining a positive attitude in today’s world is even more important.

On Wednesday, October 7, at 12:10 p.m., Berny Unruh, extension agent, will be presenting “I’m&nbsp;Positive, I’m OK” at the Cottonwood Extension Office, 601 Main, in Hays.

Come spend your lunch hour with us as we outline ideas to keep a positive outlook on life. 

The program will be concluded by 12:50 p.m. so participants can return to work. The program will be held in the large meeting room at the back of the Extension office and social distancing will be practiced.

Research has shown that optimism improves not only mental well-being but also physical health and that resilience and optimism can be associated with greater longevity. 

There are many ways to stay keep a positive outlook and the first one is to be around positive people and those that support you.&nbsp; That has been more difficult during the last six months but there are many ways to connect with people when you cannot physically be with them.

Hopefully, this lesson will inspire you to make a checklist of the things that will help you live a more positive and successful life.

Seniors at Thomas More Prep-Marian are completing a capstone project that is the 
culmination of their years of religious education. Makinsey Schlautman 
and Kamryn Hudsonpillar are hosting a 5k run/walk for Operation Underground Railroad Organization. 

Human trafficking has been an ongoing
 issue but, in 2020, it is estimated that 40.3 million people at any 
given time are being victimized by this — and an astonishing 25 percent of these
 victims are children. This is heartbreaking, and Schlautman and Hudsonpillar are looking to 
help join the fight against human trafficking.&nbsp;

For their senior capstone project,&nbsp; they are hosting a 5k run/walk for Operation Underground Railroad 
Organization. The event will be held at a Thomas More Prep-Marian 5k 
course on Saturday, Oct. 17, and will raise money for the 
battles that the Underground Railroad team face. In order to make this 
happen, they are asking for help. There are several sponsorship

Monarch 31 Days of Cash fundraiser underway

The Heartland Community Foundation, which serves Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties, is accepting applications for fall grants. Online applications are due Sunday, November 15, 2020.

This year, over $190,000 is available to charitable projects in Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties, with more than $50,000 available per county. This cycle will fund local community projects that meet one or more of the following criteria:

Funding for the fall grant cycle is provided by the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, the Heartland Healthy Living Fund and the Kansas Health Foundation, the Heartland Area Action Fund, the Ellis County Legacy Fund, the Rooks County Legacy Fund, and the Trego County Legacy Fund.

If participants are feeling sick, they should refrain from coming.

 We will be taking temperatures and anyone with a temperature of 100.0 or above will not be allowed in. Everyone will be required to wear a mask, if you do not have a mask, one will be provided for you. In addition, we will be practicing social distancing and ask for your patience during this process.

Unite Common Grounds Coffee House and Free Store (Inside The Gamers Guild), 200 E. 8th&nbsp;Street in Hays Friday, October 2 from 7:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. if supplies allow. 

Clients may only get commodities at one of these distribution times, and commodities will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis until we run out.

Doors will not open until 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.

ADP, sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, is a network of nearly 300 state colleges and universities focused on public higher education’s role in preparing the next generation to be informed, engaged members of their communities.

The discussion, open to the public to participate as well, is set for 11 a.m. to noon Central time, Wednesday, Sept. 30. It will provide access to articles covering the previous night’s debate to use for guided questions and prompts for discussion.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, the west leg of the intersection of Cody Avenue and General Hays (1000 block of Cody) will be closed to through traffic for pavement repairs.
