A hiring freeze that resulted in shortened hours at the National Weather Service office in Goodland has been lifted.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/08853750-be1d-4b80-a0d6-501633d091a1">The freeze, which was implemented by the Trump administration, would have resulted in the office's inability to staff the center 24/7.</a>

The Goodland office covers the tri-state area, including northwest Kansas, southwest Nebraska and northeast Colorado. The weather service office in Dodge City covers Hays.

As employees retired or left for other jobs, the Goodland National Weather Service office had to cease night-time forecasting in May due to staffing shortages.

While the Goodland National Weather Service works to fill these vacancies, the office will be temporarily staffed by a rotation of weather service employees from other offices, returning to 24/7 operations on Sunday.

Jesse Lundquist,&nbsp;warning coordinator meteorologist in Goodland, said Wednesday he was very grateful to the temporary staff who have come from across the country to serve up to two weeks in western Kansas, many of whom are spending time away from their families.

Earlier this month, Moran&nbsp;introduced legislation&nbsp;with Sen. Gary Peters, D-Michigan, to exempt National Weather Service meteorologists from any executive order or memorandum imposing a hiring freeze.

During a recent Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies hearing, Moran&nbsp;questioned Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick&nbsp;on the importance of the National Weather Service and making certain safety-critical National Weather Service meteorologists and hydrologists remain protected from federal hiring freezes, according to an email from Moran's office on Thursday.

"Staffing National Weather Service offices, particularly in rural parts of the country, is a constant challenge, and recent staffing shortages have led to some offices, including in Kansas, being unable to provide 24/7 weather forecasting," Moran said in an email to the Hays Post.

"The meteorologists, hydrologists, and technicians maintaining critical equipment at Weather Forecasting Offices are instrumental in keeping our communities safe, particularly as our state continues to face tornado season," Moran said. "I secured a national exemption to allow the National Weather Service to hire meteorologists and weather forecasters and fill the vacancies at the Goodland National Weather Service office."

With the addition of the temporary staff, Lundquist said he thought the Goodland office is fully prepared to provide daily forecasts and respond to severe weather.&nbsp;

He said the office is still waiting to be cleared to advertise for the vacated positions and to learn what the long-term effects on the office's budget might be under the Trump administration.

The Ellis County Fair is seeking volunteers and workers for the upcoming season.

The fair will offer seven nights of ticketed grandstand events, including car races, rodeos and other family-friendly entertainment from July 11 to 19.

"We pretty much wouldn't be able to have the fair unless we have the volunteers to help run it," Pfannenstiel said.

Help is wanted to assist with cattle, manage competition entries, staff the inflatable carnival, direct parking and work in the beer garden.

No special qualifications are needed and community members, especially students needing service hours, are encouraged to help. Volunteers will be provided meals during their shifts.

The minimum age to work at the fair is 14 years for carnival and parking positions, and 18 years for beer garden duties. Some roles are paid.

"If you can come out and give us a couple of hours, we'll take it," Pfannenstiel said.

Help is also needed before and after the fair, primarily for cleanup. Pfannenstiel said preparations begin several weekends ahead of the fair.

Ellis County Fair looking for volunteers

Henry O. Fitzthum of Hays, Kansas, has been named to the dean's list in the University of Notre Dame's First Year of Studies for outstanding scholarship during the Spring 2025 semester.

Fitzhum finished with a 4.0 GPA as an Aerospace Engineering major. Through a summer abroad program, he is spending the summer in Rome, Italy.

Students who achieve dean's honors at Notre Dame represent the top 30% of students in their college.

Hays graduate named in University of Notre Dame spring dean's list

HAYS – Taber Stokes, CJ Reid and Brady Kreutzer all drove in
four runs as the Hays Larks opened up a seven-game homestand with a convincing
15-0 win over the Denver Cougars. The Larks had a 3-0 lead after four inning
then blew the game open with a pair of six run innings in the fifth and sixth.
The game was called after seven by run rule.

Dalton Campbell (2-0) allowed two hits with seven strikeouts
and two walks over the first five innings and picked up the win. Jordan
Stribling followed with two scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts
and three walks.

The Larks (5-1-1, 3-1 RMBL) grabbed the lead on Brady Kreutzer’s
RBI double in the bottom of the second. They tacked on two more runs in the
third on CJ Reid’s double to right field. The lead grew to 4-0 on an L Reid’s
RBI double in the fifth. Following back-to-back walks to Paul Smith and Ried, Kreutzer
cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line to push the
lead to 8-0. Trent Baker capped the inning with a single which scored Kreutzer.

After a walk and back-to-back hit batters loaded the bases
in the sixth, Reid grounded into fielder’s choice which scored a run. Another
hit batter loaded the bases then Lane Sparks singled to right which scored two
and made the score 12-0. Baker would cap the scoring a batter later with a three-run
homer. 

The Larks took advantage of 11 walks and three hit batters. Four
of their 15 hits were doubles including two by Kreutzer. Campbell and Stribling
combined to strikeout 11 Cougar (2-3, 0-1 RMBL) batters while walking only three.

TREGO COUNTY —Three adults and a child were injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Friday in Trego County.&nbsp; The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1993 Ford Ranger driven by Gregory J.&nbsp;Kroeger, 69, Ellis, was northbound on 400 Avenue two miles west of Ellis. The driver failed to yield at Old Highway 40. The pickup struck a westbound 2001 Subaru Forrester driven by Crystal Y.&nbsp;Hoffert, 32, Ellis,&nbsp;in between the drivers and rear doors.&nbsp; After impact the Subaru spun around and rolled into the north ditch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EMS transported Hoffert and passengers James D. Hoffert, 40, Hays, and a 10-year-old girl to Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.&nbsp; Kroeger had a minor injury and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Harold L. ‘Harry’ Leiker, 82, Hays, died Thursday, June 12,
2025 at HaysMed.

He was born November 14, 1942 in Hays, the son of Carl S.
and Helen (Schmidt) Leiker.&nbsp; He was
graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy with the class of 1960, then he proudly
served in the U.S. Army from 1960 – 1963 and was stationed in Germany during
that time.&nbsp; He owned and operated Harry’s
Heating and Air Conditioning and did sheet metal work.&nbsp; On April 24, 1965, he was united in marriage to
Carolyn Marsh at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, and they celebrated 60
years of marriage.&nbsp; Harry was a member of
the Eagle’s Lodge and the Hays American Legion Post #173.&nbsp; Harry was a car enthusiast who enjoyed new
and classic cars, was a stickler for a well-manicured lawn, was a proud member
of the McDonald’s Coffee Crew, and relished visiting with his friends.&nbsp; He and Carolyn spent 32 years in Longmont,
Colorado, moving back to Hays in 2017 due to his health.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn, of the home in Hays, two
sons, Loren Leiker (Linda) of Hays and Troy Leiker of Longmont, CO, a daughter,
Karen Zurfluh (Steve Gentry) of Frederick, CO, two brothers, Earl J. Leiker
(Mary Ann) of Hays, and Carl Leiker (Donna) of Texhoma, TX, five grandchildren,
Brandon Leiker (Kristina), Marissa Schumacher (Luke), Bailee Carroll (Jordan),
Brynn Leiker, and Tanner Zurfluh (Mackenzie), one great grandson due in
September, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Merlyn
Leiker (Phyllis), an infant brother Johnny Leiker, sisters, Betty Ann Walter
(Leo Walter, Jr.), and Janet Dreiling, an infant sister Mary Leiker, a daughter-in-law
Pam Leiker, a brother-in-law William Marsh, and a nephew Shawn Leiker.

Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in
St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW #9076 Honor
Guard.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to
Wounded Warriors or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.&nbsp; Services are in the care of Hays Memorial

Harold L. ‘Harry’ Leiker

Wesley, the oldest son of Elvin and Florence (Johnson) Tuttle, was born August
24, 1950, in Hays, KS. He gained his wings on June 8, 2025. Our hearts are
broken but also joyful knowing he is in the loving arms of Jesus and family.

As a child, he lived with his parents until the age of 10,
then moved to Topeka for special care. At 21, he moved to DSNWK in Hays, where
he lived in a group home setting for most of his adult life. In December 2019,
he moved to Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care Facility to be closer to
family. He always called Quinter his “hometown.” Later, he became a resident of
Logan County Senior Living until his passing. The family is grateful for all
the love and care he received at these locations.

Wesley enjoyed many things in life, especially MUSIC.
He had a natural rhythm, keeping beat with his foot, hand, slinky, and
sometimes even playing a recorder to his favorites: Christmas music (played
year-round), Johnny Cash, and Elvis. A few of Wesley’s favorites included
dollar bills—which he preferred over big bills—strawberry malts, riding in a
pickup pulling a trailer, riding his three-wheel bike down the driveway to get
the mail, and giving his nieces and nephews rides in the basket or pulling his
cart behind. When opening a card with money, he would exclaim, “Money, Money,
Money!”

He carried numerous pictures in his wallet, so many that it
would bulge. He always looked forward to coming home for holidays and his
birthday; on the trip back to Hays, he would already be talking about his next
visit home. Wesley’s sense of humor and teasing could put a smile on anyone’s
face. He had many favorite sayings that will be treasured.

He helped us appreciate people with disabilities by teaching
us to look at their strengths. He touched many hearts and will be missed;
however, we know that even though he lived his life here with a disability, he
now lives in heaven free.

Preceding Wesley in death are his beloved parents, Elvin and
Florence; brother, Lester; and nephew, Lloyd. Survivors include his sister,
Lesa (Ron) Ochs; sister-in-law, Mary Tuttle (Terry Cox); nieces and nephews and
their children: Tyler Tuttle &amp; daughter Journie; Renee Tuttle &amp; son
McCoy; Dwayne Tuttle &amp; sons Asher &amp; Archer; Ryan (Tiff) Ochs &amp;
children Rylee &amp; Ryder; Shawna Ochs (Dallas Goetz) &amp; daughter Wrenley.
Many other extended family members are also grieving Wesley’s passing.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14, at

Wesley, the oldest son of Elvin and Florence (Johnson) Tuttle, was born August
24, 1950, in Hays, KS. He gained his wings on June 8, 2025. Our hearts are
broken but also joyful knowing he is in the loving arms of Jesus and family.As a child, he lived with his parents until the age of 10,
then moved to Topeka for special care. At 21, he moved to DSNWK in Hays, where
he lived in a group home setting for most of his adult life. In December 2019,
he moved to Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care Facility to be closer to
family. He always called Quinter his “hometown.” Later, he became a resident of
Logan County Senior Living until his passing. The family is grateful for all
the love and care he received at these locations.Wesley enjoyed many things in life, especially MUSIC.
He had a natural rhythm, keeping beat with his foot, hand, slinky, and
sometimes even playing a recorder to his favorites: Christmas music (played
year-round), Johnny Cash, and Elvis. A few of Wesley’s favorites included
dollar bills—which he preferred over big bills—strawberry malts, riding in a
pickup pulling a trailer, riding his three-wheel bike down the driveway to get
the mail, and giving his nieces and nephews rides in the basket or pulling his
cart behind. When opening a card with money, he would exclaim, “Money, Money,
Money!”He carried numerous pictures in his wallet, so many that it
would bulge. He always looked forward to coming home for holidays and his
birthday; on the trip back to Hays, he would already be talking about his next
visit home. Wesley’s sense of humor and teasing could put a smile on anyone’s
face. He had many favorite sayings that will be treasured.He helped us appreciate people with disabilities by teaching
us to look at their strengths. He touched many hearts and will be missed;
however, we know that even though he lived his life here with a disability, he
now lives in heaven free.Preceding Wesley in death are his beloved parents, Elvin and
Florence; brother, Lester; and nephew, Lloyd. Survivors include his sister,
Lesa (Ron) Ochs; sister-in-law, Mary Tuttle (Terry Cox); nieces and nephews and
their children: Tyler Tuttle &amp; daughter Journie; Renee Tuttle &amp; son
McCoy; Dwayne Tuttle &amp; sons Asher &amp; Archer; Ryan (Tiff) Ochs &amp;
children Rylee &amp; Ryder; Shawna Ochs (Dallas Goetz) &amp; daughter Wrenley.
Many other extended family members are also grieving Wesley’s passing.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14, at

A 30-year-old Plainville man was sentenced to more than 13
years in prison Friday in Rooks County District Court for rape and sexual assault.

Bryan Moran was initially arrested in September 2024 for eight
felony counts and two misdemeanor charges for a series of incidents that occurred
Aug. 23-26 in Plainville.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation.

According to court documents, Moran held the victim, with
whom he was in a relationship, against her will on multiple occasions. He kicked
and hit the victim in the head, threatened her with an axe, struck her with a
light bulb and a piece of wood and strangled her multiple times, according to
court documents. 

On April 22, 2025, Rooks County Prosecutor Danielle Muir filed an amended complaint with the
district court, and on April 28, Moran accepted a plea agreement.

Under the plea agreement, Moran agreed to plead guilty to
rape, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated domestic battery, all felonies. The
other charges were dropped.

With only one prior misdemeanor battery conviction, Moran faced
a total of 161 months, or about 13 years and five months, in prison with the Kansas Department of
Corrections.

According to the amended complaint, Moran, on two occasions,
raped or forced the victim to engage in sexual intercourse.

Moran also committed sexual battery on the victim when she
was unable to give consent during the same two incidents. 

The final count, aggravated domestic battery, combined all
of the prior reported crimes, from Aug. 23-26, 2024, into one charge. 

Friday, Moran appeared in the Ellis County Courthouse in
front of District Judge Curtis Brown, who handed down the 161-month sentence. 

“What you have done, the sentence doesn’t make it any better.
It doesn’t heal,” Brown said. “But it does serve justice.”

Moran was remanded back into the custody of the Rooks County
Sheriff's Department and will be transferred to the Kansas Department of
Corrections.

Flying off the top rope and into the Ellis County Fair for the first time is Midget Wrestling Warriors, a new addition to this year’s lineup.

The fair runs from July 11 to 19 and includes car races, rodeos, family-friendly fun and now wrestling.

Midget Wrestling Warriors will perform at 8 p.m. July 18 at the Rodeo Arena. Ellis County Fair Vice President Jill Pfannenstiel said the show is meant for anyone eager to see jaw-dropping stunts.

"We wanted a show that was something new and not offered a whole lot in the community," Pfannenstiel said.

These warriors are ready to deliver a high-flying show that pushes limits and redefines live entertainment. The lineup features Short Sleeve Sampson, Rob the Giant, Demus, Mascarita Divina and Potro Romano.

Center for Health Improvement launches cutting-edge AI fitness technology

The Paradise Flats Theatre Collective will present the first of two performances this morning, featuring local students.

The program started as a theater program for Plainville elementary students as part of its summer school program.

Last year, USD 270 opened the program to all students and added a section for students in grades 3 through 12. The program has more than doubled since the expansion, with students coming from six schools, as well as home-schooled students participating, music teacher Adam Flax said.

This year, the young student program had 63 enrolled students, and the older student session had 30 enrolled students.

"It's been exciting to see it grow," Flax said.

In addition to practicing for their performance, the students have been learning about theater traditions and superstitions this week, Flax said.

The younger students' program will culminate at 10:30 a.m. today with a "Peter Pan" performance at the Plainville High School auditorium. All are welcome. Admission is through a free-will donation.

The older students' session will begin on Monday and culminate with a "Broadway Ever After" performance at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 27, also at the Plainville High School auditorium. The show is a compilation of Broadway favorites, all with fairy tale themes.

"I think the program emphasizes teamwork when you have to put a show together, especially in a short time," Flax said.

The students are also encouraged to flex their imaginations and put themselves in other people's shoes.

"They also get exposure to theater and the arts," Flax said. "They don't get a lot of access to that, especially in this area. They latch onto it and come back summer after summer to be a part of it."

Plainville theater camp's first of 2 performance this morning

Lyle Dean Koci, age 70, from Bison, Kansas,
passed away on June 12, 2025, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend,
Kansas.&nbsp; He was born December 25, 1954,
in Hays, Kansas, to Glenn D. and Marilyn E. (Alger) Koci. 

Lyle grew up on the family farm spending his
early days on the tractor with his father. He enjoyed being outdoors, being
around the animals on the farm, listening to music, watching TV and helping his
grandmother by taste testing her recipes! Lyle may have had some handicaps, but
he was always smiling and pulling pranks to brighten everyone’s day.

He is survived by; his sister, Linda Koci of
Bison; his brother, Donald (Laurie) Koci of Colwich; niece, Sarah (Pete) Langaly
of Wichita; and nephew, Ryan (Haley) Koci of Denver, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn
and Marilyn; grandparents, Emil and Toni Koci and L.R. and Grace Alger; and
brother-in-law, Steve Ball.

A Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m.,
Saturday, June 21, 2025, La Crosse Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor
Larry Schumacher presiding.

passed away on June 12, 2025, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend,
Kansas.&nbsp; He was born December 25, 1954,
in Hays, Kansas, to Glenn D. and Marilyn E. (Alger) Koci. Lyle grew up on the family farm spending his
early days on the tractor with his father. He enjoyed being outdoors, being
around the animals on the farm, listening to music, watching TV and helping his
grandmother by taste testing her recipes! Lyle may have had some handicaps, but
he was always smiling and pulling pranks to brighten everyone’s day.He is survived by; his sister, Linda Koci of
Bison; his brother, Donald (Laurie) Koci of Colwich; niece, Sarah (Pete) Langaly
of Wichita; and nephew, Ryan (Haley) Koci of Denver, Colorado.He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn
and Marilyn; grandparents, Emil and Toni Koci and L.R. and Grace Alger; and
brother-in-law, Steve Ball.A Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m.,

TOPEKA — The Kansas Board of Regents on Thursday approved tuition and fee rates for the upcoming fiscal year at the state’s six public universities, emphasizing a continued focus on affordability and student success.

“The Regents’ strategic plan emphasizes affordability for Kansas families and success for students in our institutions,” said KBOR Chair Carl Ice in a statement. “These tuition rates balance those priorities by keeping costs as low as possible while ensuring that state universities can continue to help students succeed in the classroom and in their careers after graduation.”

The decision aligns with the Board’s strategic plan, Building a Future, which aims to improve student outcomes while expanding access to financial aid. According to KBOR, on-time graduation rates at state universities have increased by 10.2 percentage points over the last five years. Entry-level wages for graduates have risen more than 15% since 2020, and the total amount of need-based aid, grants, and scholarships has grown by 28%.

Individual tuition rate changes for each university are expected to be posted on the Board’s website.

The six state universities governed by KBOR include the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Wichita State University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University and Pittsburg State University.

A request to rezone the property site of the former Lincoln Elementary School, 1906 Ash, will be heard by the Hays Area Planning Commission on Monday.

An application has been submitted for a change from public and institutional district to&nbsp;residential multi-family district.

Property owner and Hays developer Michael Graham is proposing to remodel&nbsp;the former school into apartments, as well as build a residential multi-family housing&nbsp;development on the surrounding property.

Lincoln School was closed this spring as part of the Hays USD 489 bond project. Graham&nbsp;plans to remodel the 100-year-old school into 26 to 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments&nbsp;and construct seven 4-plexes on the surrounding area east of the former school.

City&nbsp;staff recommends setting a public hearing for&nbsp;July 21.

Rezoning request for former Lincoln School property to become housing

Gavin D. Buffington, 57, died
at his home on Wednesday May 29, 2025. He was born June 9, 1967 to Jack and
Marlene Buffington in Kansas City, Missouri and was raised in Frontenac, Kansas
alongside his brother and in close proximity to both sets of grandparents and
several cousins. Gavin’s parents were both teachers, his father teaching
physics at Pittsburg High School and Pittsburg State University. Gavin followed
his lead after he graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1985 by pursuing
physics as well. Gavin attended Pittsburg State University, graduating with a
Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1989 and a Master’s Degree in Physics in
1991. He then attended and graduated from the University of Missouri — Rolla in
1997 with a Ph.D in Physics.

Gavin was married to Michelle
Lehman in 1991 and they eventually made their home in Hays, Kansas when he was
hired to the faculty at Fort Hays State University in the fall of 1997. He and
Michelle had two children, Quinn Buffington and Zoe Buffington. Gavin became
chair of the Physics Department in August, 2006 and retained that position and
full professorship at the university until his death.

Professionally Gavin was a
dedicated teacher and mentor to both his students and fellow faculty. He served
on numerous committees at the university throughout his tenure and remained
committed to dynamic and engaging teaching and support for students by helping
to maintain a strong physics program and research at Fort Hays State
University. His research over the years focused on theoretical and
computational physics, and atomic physics. In addition to teaching physics, he
taught classes for those majoring in computing, networking, and informational
systems.

Gavin and Michelle divorced in
2004. In 2013, Gavin met Shelli Patterson and they began a relationship that
led to their marriage in 2015. Shelli and Gavin split their time between Hays
and Kansas City, MO enjoying one another, supporting their careers, and
spending time with family and friends. In the last 4 years their faithful
companion for these cross-state ventures was Maxwell, their Yorkshire Terrier
who misses Gavin dearly. In recent years they had begun to travel more
extensively, Gavin discovering a love for cruising with Shelli.

Beyond his professional
expertise and accomplishments, Gavin had lifetime passions that kept him busy.
His early love for Kansas City Southern Railroad stemmed from his grandfather
who was an engineer for KCS. From his father he developed in interest in both
amateur radio (Gavin was licensed at age 14) and electronics work. Gavin was
also an avid cyclist and a lifelong musician. Whatever he did to support his
longtime passions or new interests, Gavin was always around people and ready to
make new acquaintances. He never went anywhere — Hays, Kansas City, the
Mediterranean, on the radio airwaves — where he did not meet and befriend
someone.

Gavin was preceded in death by
his parents, Jack and Marlene Buffington of Frontenac and all grandparents. He
is survived by his wife, Shelli, and children, Quinn (Tara) Buffington of
Overland Park, KS and Zoe Buffington of Hays. He is also survived by his
step-sons, Richard Patterson III and Joshua (Blake) Patterson all of Kansas
City, MO.. Finally, he is survived by his brother Cortney (Shannon) Buffington
and niece MacKenzie of Lawrence, KS.

Eschewing the formalities of a
sad occasion and much preferring to remain the life of the party, Gavin will be
celebrated rather than mourned at Gella’s Diner and LB Brewing on Saturday,
August 2nd from 2:00 - 4:00. The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers
to the two causes which Gavin and his family fervently wish to see cured or

DODGE CITY – Dylan LaRue tripled home the go-ahead run in
the top of the 10th inning, lifting the Hays Larks to a 5-4 win over
the Dodge City A’s Wednesday in Dodge City. 

Jackson Babcock led off the 10th inning with his
fourth hit of the game, and on the next pitch, LaRue drove him home, putting
Hays up 5-4.

Hays’ Julio Ramos turned in four perfect innings of relief
with six strikeouts for the win. 

LaRue and Babcock both homered and scored twice. LaRue also
drove in a pair of runs. 

The Larks open a three-game home series against the Denver
Cougars on Friday.

I love entrepreneurs who creatively meet local needs. A history group friend recently mentioned a service that supports individuals many don’t think about—elderly or disabled folks who once lived vibrant lives growing gardens, taking walks, and riding bikes around neighborhoods.

She described attending an event where Gay Flax, a clever Hays woman with a mission, showed up with adapted bicycles built for two. Keep in mind, these are not the style built for Daisy who pedaled behind her sweetheart as they fell in love. No, one bike is a side-by side-bike that permits the passenger to ride in something like a side car. The other version has a bicycle-powered wheelchair attached to the front. Naturally, driver and passengers sport protective head gear. Is your mind going where mine went?

I immediately thought of nursing home residents or loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other disabilities who can no longer bike or walk distances. Many would love to buzz through nearby neighborhoods, looking at flowers and other landscaping or noticing flitting birds. My mom would have thrilled to feel sunshine warming her face, wind blowing her hair, all while checking out pretties local green-thumbs grew. She’d let me know which ones she loved most.

Owner/operator Gay Flax is a bike rider and so was her mother before Alzheimer’s interfered with this activity. While Gay originally altered the bikes to permit her to continuing bicycling with her mother, she expanded her target audience.

She now goes to area nursing homes taking residents on rides as well. She calls her business Sunny Cycling and designed an interesting and informative <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61575750135078">Facebook </a>page to promote it. She describes her service as “companion rides through parks and scenic spots allowing individuals to reconnect with the world one ride at a time.” She’s also willing to meet near a passenger’s former home so they could revisit an old neighborhood. As I explored her many options, my heart smiled, thinking about the joy she brings her clients and their loved ones.

Rates are $50 an hour, but users can choose one 60-minute ride,&nbsp; two 30-minute rides, three 20-minute rides, or four 15-minute rides for one or multiple passengers. Using her pick-up and trailer, Gay will take her service to nearby communities. Long-term care facilities can arrange several short rides for multiple residents. An online photo revealed one of her passenger’s grandkids biking alongside their loved one. Think of the laughter everyone experienced making memories during that adventure.

It's more than just a bike ride. Gay said she thoroughly enjoys visiting with each passenger. They talk about spouses, children, grandchildren, jobs, relocating, and memories of the area. She genuinely loves the relationships she builds with each rider.

In another post, I noted Hays Recreation Commission added this as an option people over 55 can sign up to enjoy. This makes it easy to involve either elders or the disabled in a laughter-filled outdoor activity that will generate great family stories around holiday tables.

I didn’t realize this was an option in this area until a couple of weeks ago. Now that I know, I’m telling our daughters to sign me up when that day comes and to tell Gay I want to go past houses with the most flowers and birds.

MADORIN: Sunny cycling, peddling blessings in Hays

The Ellis County Commission reviewed the process for funding outside agencies for the 2026 fiscal year, including an almost $82,000 requested increase from High Plains Mental Health Center.

Craig Poe, executive director of High Plains Mental Health Center, requested $378,603.

The request includes $305,993 in annual funding to support core mental health services and $72,609 for the new Crisis Intervention Center.

Poe said the 22-bed center remodeling project is expected to cost $5.4 million. The facility aims to relieve strain on state hospitals, such as Larned, and help reduce wait times for treatment.

"This facility is the only type that will be in any of the western half of the state," he said.

Eight agencies submitted funding requests totaling about $1.22 million. The Care Council will review most of the requests and provide recommendations at a future meeting.

Five of those agencies presented to the commission on Tuesday.

Amanda Rupp, executive director of the Ellis County Historical Society, requested $140,000 for 2026, an increase of $40,000 from the organization’s 2025 funding.

 </figure><h2>Ellis County Historical Society</h2>Amanda Rupp, executive director of the Ellis County Historical Society, requested $140,000 for 2026, an increase of $40,000 from the organization’s 2025 funding.Rupp said county funding is vital to the historical society’s efforts to operate programs, maintain and grow access to its collections, and support schools, researchers, and families.Rupp said the society cut staff hours due to budget constraints and would like to restore those hours. The society has been drawing from reserves, but those are starting to be depleted.The society is also hoping to open its Victoria location in 2026, and it will need to staff that new location."We will continue to find other ways to fund," she said.<h2>Humane Society of the High Plains</h2>Jessica Frieb, assistant manager of the Humane Society of the High Plains, requested $2,600, the same amount as last year.Frieb said the Humane Society took in 54 dogs and 36 cats from Ellis County in 2024, with just 18% of strays returned to their owners. The average cost to care for each unclaimed animal, excluding emergency veterinary care, is $118."We are doing everything we can to help all of the animals within Ellis County and the Hays community, including the ones that are left without any help," Frieb said.<h2>Ellis County Conservation District</h2>Mary Pfeifer, chairperson of the Ellis County Conservation District, requested $72,646, with $61,896 for operations and $10,750 for cost-share programs."Our goal is to develop and implement programs to protect and conserve the natural resources in Ellis County," Pfeifer said.&nbsp;<h2>Grow Hays</h2>Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, requested $165,000 from the commission and said the county and surrounding communities play a vital role in the organization's mission."Without you all, we would not be able to function the way we are, and we wouldn't be able to have the success that I believe we've had," he said.At a previous commission meeting, Williams updated the commission on ongoing projects and economic development efforts.
