TOPEKA — Kansas Tourism announced that more than 230 tourism attractions across the state, including the Hays region, are participating in the 2025 Sunflower Summer program. The lineup includes something for every interest and region of the state —&nbsp; museums and historic sites, zoos, arboretums, art centers and more.

Local participating tourism attractions include the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Ellis County Historical Society Museum and historic Fort Hays in Hays, Walter P. Chrysler Boyhood Home and Museum in Ellis, the Trego County Historical Society Museum and Cedar Bluff Lake and State Park, WaKeeney, and the four museums in La Crosse operated by the Rush County Historical Society.&nbsp;

“With such a wide variety of exceptional attractions participating this year, Sunflower Summer continues to open doors for Kansas families to explore and connect with every corner of our state,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “This program not only creates unforgettable memories for students and parents — it also fuels local economies by drawing visitors to main streets, museums and hidden gems across Kansas.”&nbsp;

The 2025 Sunflower Summer program will run from July 12 to August 3. 

During this period, eligible students and one accompanying adult are granted free one-time access to each participating attraction, once per season. Passes can be claimed through the free Sunflower Summer app and redeemed at the attraction upon arrival. Kansas students from pre-K through 12th grade — including those in public, private and homeschool settings — are eligible to participate. 

The program is exclusively available to Kansas residents.

Hays area attractions among free tourism sites to enjoy during Sunflower Summer

LIBERAL
– Lane Sparks had five hits and drove in four runs, Thomas Lyssy added three
hits and five RBIs and the Hays Larks gained a split in their doubleheader with
the Liberal Bee Jays with a 14-8 win in game two Wednesday night at Brent Gould Field. 

The Larks were held to one run on two hits and lost the opener 4-1.

Liberal
(8-6, 3-3 RMBL) scored two runs in the bottom of the first of the second contest, but the Larks (11-3-1,
7-3 RMBL) answered with three in the third, three in the fourth and five in the
fifth to build and 11-2 lead. They would add three more in the top of the
seventh which pushed the lead to 14-2 before the Bee Jays struck for six in the
bottom of the inning.

Lyssy
gave the Larks the lead in the second contest with a two-out bases loaded
double which scored three. An inning later, Kaleb Duncan drove in a run with a
single to center. Lane Sparks pushed the lead to 6-2 with a two-run triple
later in the frame.

Lyssy
led off the fifth with a double followed by back-to-back walks. Lorenzo Rios was hit
by a pitch to make the score 7-2. CJ Reid followed with a two-run double, Duncan a sacrifice fly and Sparks and RBI single to give Hays an 11-2 lead.

Sparks
drove in a run with a double down the right field line and Lyssy added another
run with a double to center in the seventh.

The
Bee Jays made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. They opened the inning
with three straight hits then with one out, scored a walk, two-run
homer, a double, a single and a passed ball Julio Ramos who got got
back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Trent Baker (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts and picked up the win.

In the opener, Jason
Davis held the Larks to on run on two hits over the first six innings. Larks starter Dalton Campbell (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits but walked
four over four innings and suffered his first loss of the season.

Thomas

Garrett Gruell was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first. Lyssy would
later scored in a sacrifice fly from Taber Stokes.

The

Victor
Eugene Potter, 82, died peacefully at his home in Hill City surrounded by his
family. Victor was born to Victor Joy and Cleo Marna (Cross) Potter, July 7,
1942 at Imperial, Nebraska. The family lived on a farm west of Hayes Center,
Nebraska.

Victor was
the oldest of three brothers with Jerry in the middle and Dexter the youngest.
One can only imagine the mischief&nbsp; these
three could dream up. Of course, Victor many times was the instigator and Jerry
and Dexter were the ones that got into the most trouble.

Victor
attended the schools in Hayes Center and graduated from high school there. He
tried college for a semester, but decided it wasn’t for him and instead
enlisted in the United States Navy. This was where Victor would find his
calling.

He was
initially stationed in Pensacola, Florida, and later at the Norfolk Naval Air
Station in Virginia. It was there that Victor gained rank and status.&nbsp; He spent his entire career in Virginia, and
became Commander Master Chief, retiring in the late 1980’s. He had always loved
tinkering with cars and now had time to do just that.

So, he
opened his own&nbsp; business, “Vic’s Mobile
Maintenance” in Norfolk. It has been said, “The man could fix just about
anything and make anything run.”

In 2006,
Victor and his wife Cheryl moved to Hill City, Kansas to be closer to family.
Traveling with their RV, camping and especially fishing with the kids and
grandkids were so special to all.

Victor was
preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Jerry. He is survived by his
wife, Cheryl of Hill City; son Victor F. Potter and wife Eula of Alabama; three
daughters: Marna Wilson and husband Charles of Elizabeth, North Carolina; Vicki
Hauer of Camden, North Carolina; Stephanie Voss of Hill City;&nbsp; a brother Dexter Potter and his wife Claudia
of Hill City; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; nephews: Tony
Potter, Dale Potter and Kirk Potter; and nieces Julie Smith and Lisa Yost.

Lawrence 'Larry' Joseph Von Lintel, 71, of Goodland, Kansas,
passed away on June 21, 2025, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita,
Kansas.&nbsp;He was born on May 19, 1954, in Hays, Kansas, to Lawrence and
Theresa (Rohleder) Von Lintel.

Larry was raised on the family farm north of Quinter,
Kansas. Despite facing serious health challenges in his early years, he
remained positive and resilient throughout his life.

Larry graduated from Quinter High School in 1972 and later
that year enrolled at Northwest Kansas Vocational Technical School in Goodland.
He initially studied auto mechanics but soon found his calling in diesel
mechanics. While attending Vo-Tech, Larry began working at Goodland Greenline.
He later worked for Close Implement in Oakley and spent many years at Taylor
Implement in Hoxie, where he eventually retired. A loyal "John Deere
man" through and through, Larry took great pride in his work in the
agricultural equipment industry.

Known for his remarkable skill and passion for fixing
things, Larry was often found in his garage tinkering and keeping himself busy.
A dedicated and tireless worker, he was always ready to lend a helping hand—day
or night—never asking for anything in return and never complaining.

Family was everything to Larry, and he especially cherished
time spent with his grandchildren. He was known for his cheerful sayings,
including: “I’m fantastic!”, “Howdy Doody,” and “Toodle-oo.”

Larry was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus.

He married Debbie Horton in May of 1975. Together they had
three children: daughters,&nbsp;Mandi (Matt) Muller of Lawrence, KS, and Candi
(Russell) Owens of Edson, KS; and&nbsp;son, L.J. (Jessica) Von Lintel of
Goodland, KS.

In 1999, Larry married Debi Rarick in a civil ceremony
officiated by the justice of the peace in Hoxie, KS. Out of his deep love and
devotion to Debi, he chose to reaffirm their vows with a formal wedding
ceremony held on August 17, 2024, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church
in Goodland, KS.

Through this marriage, Larry gained three children:
daughters Elizabeth (Tom) Sykes of Wichita, KS, and Kari Bell of Hays, KS; and
son Robert (Amanda) Rarick of Tomball, TX.

He was a proud grandfather to fifteen grandchildren: Jordin,
Addison, Blade, Joseph, Landin, Colt, Laney, Nya, Brallion, Leo, Payton, Nikki,
Conner, Ethan, and Eldon. He loved each of them deeply.

Larry is survived by his wife, Debi; his sisters, Kathy
(Jim) Blackwill of Quinter, KS, and Annette (Jerry) Reitmayer of Derby, KS;
brother, Bruce Von Lintel of Larned, KS; and sister-in-law, Mary Von Lintel,
Russel, KS.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and
Theresa Von Lintel, and brother, Nick Von Lintel.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 5:00
- 7:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main St., Quinter, KS. A vigil
service and recitation of the Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on
Wednesday, July 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 202
Cottonwood St., Park, KS, with burial to follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Kansas
Foundation of Hope or Masses in Larry’s honor.

Hays city commissioners will vote on several items at their Thursday meeting related to two proposed new housing developments.

Hays resident Tim Speno, One Twenty Seven Investments, LLC, plans to construct three Airbnb rental apartments on the second floor of the building at 1012 Main St., which houses Eclectic Threads quilt shop on the ground floor.

Speno is requesting the city apply on his behalf for a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce. There would be no financial obligation for the city.

Commissioners will have a public hearing regarding the grant request, then vote on the interlocal agreement between the city and One Twenty Seven Investments, and approve resolutions to certify legal authority and declare a building as blighted.

Another agenda item addresses new short-term housing planned in west Hays on the east side of the little Dillons store at 2707 Canal Blvd. Aaron Dreher, AD3 LLC, Hays, is requesting rezoning from agriculture to residential multi-family district for .607 acres of land.

Three adjustments to the Unified Development Code regarding small accessory structures 120 square feet or smaller will be voted upon.

Proposed are the elimination of&nbsp; • Side and rear setbacks for accessory structures 120 square feet and smaller • Maximum number of two accessory structures that can be placed on a single parcel &nbsp;• Restrictions on the size of accessory structures in agriculture districts, which are on the edge of town.

Commissioners will also further consider a recommended general nuisance abatement for 206 E. 14th St.

There would be no financial obligation for the city.Commissioners will have a public hearing regarding the grant request, then vote on the interlocal agreement between the city and One Twenty Seven Investments, and approve resolutions to certify legal authority and declare a building as blighted.<figure>

Hays City Commission to consider 2 housing projects

ACCESS General Public Transportation in Hays is bracing for a 2026 funding gap after state funding fell short to keep rides rolling.

Jerry Michaud, DSNWK executive director, said KDOT has provided some funding for 2026, but it falls short, and with the city and county also unable to fully cover the deficit, a significant gap remains.

Michaud said the gap is about $161,000, with the city of Hays contributing $82,500 and Ellis County providing $50,000.

"We definitely appreciate the support of the county and the support of the city. They've been great partners all along the way," Michaud said.

ACCESS offers public transportation primarily to low-income, elderly and disabled individuals. Michaud said the service provided about 28,000 rides in 2024, with more than 11,000 of those trips related to work.

Michaud said there are no plans for immediate changes to the service.

"We've been able to make it work through 2025, but for 2026, we are seeing a deficit of which we're trying to find a solution to that," Michaud said.

Ellis Police Chief Avery Smith posted on Facebook on Sunday that a sign marking the historical Ellis Trail in Ellis had been vandalized.

The sign is one of several in the area that mark the Ellis Trail, which honors the 35-mile route that early Nicodemus settlers walked to reach their settlement.

About 380 black settlers, most recently freed slaves, arrived from Kentucky at Ellis by rail in fall 1877.

Nicodemus is the only all-black settlement west of the Mississippi River remaining. It is home to a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/nico/index.htm">National Historic Site</a>.

Smith said in his post, "The Ellis Police Department is seeking assistance from our community members to identify the person(s) responsible for damaging the Nicodemus sign at Memorial Park."

The timeframe for the damage to have occurred is unknown, but it is believed to be recent and deliberate, the post said.

"Without interviewing a suspect, we cannot directly determine&nbsp;whether a bias motivated the damage. The damage appears to be DELIBERATE in nature, meaning that someone damaged the sign on purpose and not accidentally."

He added, "If there is a hate bias involved, the investigation will be appropriately conducted and referred to the appropriate charging authority. We strongly condemn hate speech and hate crimes, but also recognize and honor that free speech is a tenet of a free society. 

"The Ellis Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to Constitutional policing and respecting the rights of all Community Members that we have the honor of serving. Political scapegoating, on ANY side of the political spectrum, is not the answer to solving this case. You cannot have a community without UNITY."

Smith said Tuesday afternoon there were still no leads on the case.

Eastbound I-70 is temporarily shut down at Ellis due to a semi truck fire. Vehicles are being directed down the off ramp and then they can get back on using the on-ramp. Please slow down if you were in this area!

According to a Kansas Department of Transportation camera as of 2:30 p.m. today at the Ellis 146 exit, there is a semi on fire in the westbound lanes.

Smoke is blowing over both lanes of traffic, and traffic is being diverted.

Marvin 'Curly' Leiker, 84, Hays, died Monday, June 23, 2025, at his home in Hays.

He was born
September 6, 1940 in Hays the son of Ted and Sally (Haas) Leiker.&nbsp; He was ranch manager for Sweetwater Ranch for
40 years and it was there that memories were made and cherished with family and
friends.&nbsp; Curly lived and demonstrated
his strong faith and is well known for the metal sculptures, art, and mailboxes
distributed around the United States.&nbsp; He
has crafted hundreds of metal sculptures for gifts, and sold as a
business/hobby for sixty years.&nbsp; He was
featured in numerous magazines, newspaper articles, and gave demonstrations at
city meetings, churches, and schools.&nbsp; He
was honored to serve his country and be a veteran.

Curly is
survived by his wife Tamy, daughter Kenda Falley, son Tyson Leiker, his
grandchildren Braden and Kate Falley, Jadyn Falley, Cody and Cheyenne Gephart,
and Keaton Leiker, a great granddaughter Imelda, his sisters Mary Luecke and
Shirley (Ivan) Werth, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was
preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Stacy Albers-Leiker.

Curly was
laid to rest in St. Fidelis Cemetery in Victoria.&nbsp; There will be a graveside memorial service at
St. Fidelis Cemetery at 10:30 am on Thursday, June 26, 2025.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, choose a charity that
would be a blessing to others.&nbsp; Services
are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and condolences and
memories of Curly may be shared with his family at www.haysmemorial.com

The Kansas Department of Transportation will temporarily close both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 at Exit 157 near Hays on Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29.

During daylight hours on both days, traffic will be diverted through the exit and entrance ramps and back onto I-70. The traffic diversion is scheduled to end by 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 29.

The closure is necessary for crews to set steel girder beams for construction of the new U.S. 183 bypass bridge over I-70, which is part of the project to improve the U.S. 183 bypass and I-70 interchange. Project work began in spring 2023 and is expected to be completed later this fall, conditions permitting.

Knoll, age 90, a very well-known artist, sculptor, teacher, and a friend to
many passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the Redbud Village Care Center
in Plainville, Kansas.

He was a former
Ellis County resident and lived his later years in Palco, Kansas. He was born
October 8, 1934, in Hays, Kansas, and was one of nine children in the family of
Adam and Barbara (Sander) Knoll.&nbsp;&nbsp; He married Mary (Desbien) in 1965
at Zurich, Kansas

Omer grew up in
Victoria, Kansas and was a 1952 graduate of Victoria High School, and was a
veteran of the US Army.

He earned a BS
and an MS in Art Education from Fort Hays State University and completed
undergraduate studies in architecture at Kansas State University and design,
photography and painting classes at the University of Kansas.&nbsp; He started
sculpture commissions as a graduate student.&nbsp; From 1965 to 1978, Knoll
served as an art instructor teaching drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, 2D
and 3D design, art history, art appreciation, art fundamentals and photography
at Iola and Allen County Community College.&nbsp; From 1978 to present he has
been a self-employed artist/sculptor, and he had a studio in Hays from 1978 to
1986.&nbsp; In 1986, he moved to Arizona but returned to Kansas in 1994 to live
in Palco.&nbsp; He was Fire Chief for the City of Palco for two years.

His vast
collection of sculptures includes famous Kansans, including Dr. Michael
DeBakey, philanthropist Dane G. Hansen, Senator Robert J. Dole, many of Knoll’s
family and friends, as well as a salute to his beloved Volga German heritage,
are included in his work.&nbsp; There are also paintings of iconic western
Kansas churches and structures.

Omer is
survived by his son, Anthony “Tony” Knoll, Phoenix, AZ; his brothers, Lester
Knoll, Victoria, KS; Larry Knoll, Denver, CO; his sister, Jane Knoll-Tenney and
husband, James, Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded
in death by his parents, Adam and Barbara; his wife, Mary; his brothers, Wayne; Carroll;
Devon; Terry and his sister, Iris.

A Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 5, 2025 at The
Basilica of Saint Fidelis, 900 Cathedral Ave., Victoria, Kansas with Celebrant,
Father Curtis Carlson O.F.M. Cap.

The family will
receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Saturday, at the church.

Inurnment will
be in Saint Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas with military honors by the
Victoria V.F.W. Post 1751.

The family
suggests memorials made payable to: Saint Fidelis Cemetery in care of
Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays,
Kansas 67601.

Omer Aloysius Knoll

The painters&nbsp;from <a href="https://www.brickmobbrickup.com/">Brickmob of Wichita</a>&nbsp;applied the final coat of paint this weekend to a new mural on the south side of the&nbsp;<a href="https://stemharvest.org/" target="_blank">STEM Harvest</a>&nbsp;building, 507 Main,&nbsp;Hays.

Brickmob is co-owned by&nbsp;Chris Garcia and his wife, Nicky Rocho. The art for the mural was created by Joe Worley.

The mural was made possible thanks to a grant from the Beach Family Foundation.

Garcia said STEM Harvest's owner, Dallas Haselhorst, wanted a mural in a different style than others in Hays and that would promote the science mission of STEM Harvest, which is a nonprofit organization primarily focused on kids' STEM education, especially technologies such as programming, 3D printing, prototyping and electronics.

The mural, which is an urban, graphic-novel design, showcases Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla and technology in general, Garcia said.

Tesla can be seen with lightning bolts in his hands that shoot down into the electric charging station on the south wall of the building.

It also includes the following "Easter Eggs": the Linux Penguin, the debugging "moth" popularized by Admiral Grace Hopper, the Konami code, MST3k and the symbol for a black hole.

Painting began in May, but Garcia said the project has been in the works for several years. The mural took about 250 hours of painting time.

Garcia said painting conditions were not ideal over the weekend. Winds were gusting to 40 mph, and high temperatures were in the upper nineties.

Garcia, a graduate of Wichita State University, co-founded Brickmob with several other artists in 2014.

"I had a day job, but I wanted to continue doing my artwork, so I reached out to three other artists whom I thought could work well together, I could work well with and could bring something to the table," he said.

They started selling prints, T-shirts and small sculptures at art fairs.

They had the opportunity to do a mural at an art festival in Wichita.

"We all fell in love with it immediately," he said of mural painting. "There was something about being outside and working in the elements and fresh air and seeing your artwork on a grand scale for everyone to enjoy."

"We were literally changing the landscape of where we were at," he said.

In Kansas, the Brickmob has also created murals in El Dorado, Valley Center, Goddard, Osawatomie, Kansas City and Hillsboro. They have also painted murals in Oklahoma and Texas.

One of the company's significant goals is to employ artists and pay them a fair wage.

However, Garcia and his wife love to take on projects that involve kids or socially driven programs.

The STEM Harvest mural fit perfectly within that mission, Garcia said.

Garcia said he thought the new mural will be a complementary addition to the other murals in downtown Hays. The crew took time to drive around Hays and view the other murals in the community.

"There is definitely some skill here. I can appreciate that," he said.

"There's a lot of realism and things that have to do with history and the Western aesthetic for artwork, which is really cool. We embrace that too. But with [our mural] being more graphical and brightly colored, I didn't see anything like this in town. This one is really going to stand out in comparison."

Brickmob finishes new mural on STEM Harvest building in Hays

TMP-Marian is pleased to announce the new faculty joining the Hays school for the 2025-26 school year. 

Ms. Whitney Befort will teach 6th grade social studies and 6th grade crop science as well as lead the high school Scholar’s Bowl team. Ms. Befort graduated from TMP-Marian High School in 2022 and is graduating from Fort Hays State University in May 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in history secondary education.

 "I am extremely excited to come back to my high school and teach 6th grade social studies. I have many fond memories of TMP-Marian from when I was a student, and I am hoping to help students grow in their studies and interests!” Ms. Befort said.

Ms. Rhonda Windholz is returning to TMP-Marian as well, not as a former student, but as a former teacher. Ms. Windholz taught at TMP-Marian from 2022-2024. Mrs. Windholz recently moved back to Hays from Tennessee. She has worked in education for 29 years. 

“I’ve done much soul searching and praying this year and am excited to give back and help prepare our students for their future,” Ms. Windholz said.

Mr. Conor Nicholl will teach 6th and 7th grade English Language Arts as well as coach the junior high girls basketball team. Additionally, in the spring, he will assist with the softball team. 

Mr. Nicholl most recently taught English language arts at Victoria Jr/Sr High School. He may be familiar to many Monarchs because he was the JH girls basketball head coach for the 2023-24 season. He was also a high school girls basketball assistant coach and assistant softball coach during the 2023-24 school year. 

"I am very happy to rejoin the TMP-M community," Nicholl said. "My family and I have long held TMP-M in high esteem. We love the faith-filled atmosphere and the smaller school environment. I am happy to be involved as both an educator and a coach with TMP-M and excited for what's to come." 

Other teaching assignment announcements: Sr. Mary Monica will teach senior religion including overseeing the Senior Capstone projects. Mr. Rick Binder will teach 8th grade religion and Confirmation prep. Ms. Brenda Rose will take on Lead Teacher duties in the junior high while continuing to teach 8th grade language arts.

Located in Hays, Kan., Thomas More Prep-Marian is a Catholic school serving grades 6-12. Students come from Hays, the surrounding region, and from countries around the world. The school was founded by the Capuchin Franciscans as Hays Catholic College in 1908 and ultimately became Thomas More Prep-Marian in 1981. The school continues to serve young people in the traditions of spiritual growth, academic excellence, and leadership formation.
