A Hays man was arrested on multiple charges alleging his involvement in the rape of a teen victim younger than 18.

According to court records, 25-year-old Adam Joel Klausmeyer engaged in alleged sexual activity on or about July 13 with a girl who is younger than 18. 

Court records indicate the victim was intoxicated and vomiting. The court records also allege Klausmeyer intended to distribute the act online.

According to district court records, Klausmeyer was arrested on July 13 on charges of alleged rape, sexual exploitation of a child, aggravated human trafficking, aggravated intent to trade in child pornography and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Klausmeyers is in the Ellis County Jail with a bond set at $500,000. His bond hearing is set for Thursday.

Hays continues to experience a housing shortage across various price ranges, according to the latest housing study update conducted by RDG Planning and Design in Omaha.

While construction activity has declined during the past several years, much of the new rental construction has been in&nbsp;locations or layouts appealing to students rather than the city’s young workforce or retirees.

The housing analysis will be presented during Thursday's city commission meeting.

A housing study is required by state statute before the economic incentive tool,&nbsp;Reinvestment Housing Incentive District,&nbsp;can be used. 

Also on the agenda is a public hearing for the $300,000 state Community Development Block Grant request by Hays developer Tim Speno, One Twenty Seven Investments, LLC. Speno plans to rehabilitate the second floor of the 100-year-old building at 1012 Main St. into Airbnb rental units.

There is no financial obligation to the city.

Study reveals Hays needs more housing at all prices; city commission to review analysis 

Rosemary Bunker Wickham, age 85 of Hays, KS passed away on
Saturday June 28, 2025, at Hays Medical Center – Hays.

She was born November 27, 1939,
in Ellis County to George F. Bunker and Agatha (Wolf) Bunker. She married
Robert E. Wickham on January 9, 1960, in Hays, KS.

She graduated from Girls
Catholic High School in 1958. She went on to get her bachelor’s degree at Fort
Hays State University in Home Economics and was a registered dietitian. She
worked at Hadley hospital for many years and at St. Anthony Hospital in the
nursing department, American Cancer Society, Blind services, Area on Aging and
before her retirement KETCH for disabled people.

Rosemary was a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church – Hays.

She enjoyed time with her kids,
grandkids, great grandkids. She loved holidays, especially Halloween pumpkin
carving, and dying Easter eggs. She loved family gatherings and was a great
German cook. She loved to play the piano and sing and dance. She was the best
spouse, mom, grandmother, great grandmother. Her legacy of compassion, grace
and deep love for her family will live on through all who were blessed to have
known her. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

husband Robert of the home, her children: Carrie Sutton and husband Jeff of
Buhler, KS; Connie Linenberger and husband Gerold of Hays, KS; Robert J.
Wickham and wife Linda of Hays, KS; Michael T. Wickham and wife Gail of Hays,
KS. Seven grandchildren: Anthony (Tony) Linenberger and wife Kathleen of Hays,
KS; Tyler Sutton and wife Leesa of Bates City, MO; Emily Alamo and husband
Erick of Hutchison, KS; Rusty Wickham and wife Katie of Colorado; Copeland
Wickham and wife Ember of Hays, KS; Zane Wickham and significant other Whytney
of Hays, KS; and Carissa Pfeifer and husband Dexter of Olathe, KS. 15 Great
grandchildren: McKenzie, and Macie Linenberger, Derrick, Elleigh, Wyatt Alamo,
Roman Sutton, Nora, and Navy Pfeifer, Laytyn and Layney Wickham, Elayna,
Alloraha, and Zariah Wickham, and Gracelynn, and Madelyn Wickham.

She was preceded by her
parents: George F. Bunker and Agatha (Wolf) Bunker, her stepfather: Samuel
Hayton, Brothers: George, Eugene, William (Bill), Robert, Eddy, Tom and infant
brother Samuel, Sisters-in-law: Vernea, Betty, Freda, and Glennis, and her granddaughter:
Corie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday,
August 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 West 13th Street
Hays, Kansas 67601. Inurnment will follow the services in the St. Joseph
Catholic Cemetery – Hays.

In lieu of flowers the family
suggests memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The American Heart
Association, The American Cancer Society, and/or The Area on Aging, in care of

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field and cross country teams were all listed as USTFCCCA All-Academic teams for the 2024-25 season, announced Monday (July 21) by the coaches association. Fourteen individuals also achieved All-Academic recognition, including nine from the women's team and five from the men's squad.

Emily Diercks, Taylor Hoskinson, Darian Hudgeons, Makenzie Premer, Jaycee Vath and Emma Weiner all received the individual honor during the cross country season, with Diercks doubling up by picking up the award again during the track and field season. Others earning the track and field award include Reba Mader, Jessica Saunders and Emma Slade.

Individuals from the men's track and field team picking up the award include Avrey Albright, Hayden Albright, Josiah Ball, Noah Morenz and Ethan Salmans.

This is the fifth honor for Vath and Hayden Albright, the third for Hudgeons and the second for Salmans, while the other 10 honorees are first-time recipients.

The women's cross country team earned the honor for the 18th-consecutive season, while the men achieved the honor for the 13th time since 2005 and the 10th time in a row dating back to 2014. The women's cross country team finished the year with a team GPA of 3.67, while the men turned in a team GPA of 3.19.

This is the ninth-consecutive season that both the men's and women's track and field programs have picked up this distinction. The women's track and field team carried a GPA of 3.519, while the men completed the year with a team GPA of 3.216.

In order to qualify for All-Academic team distinction in cross country, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period and compile a team score at their respective regional championship meet, among other qualifiers. Individuals must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-30 percent of their respective regional championship meet, among other qualifiers.

In order to qualify for All-Academic team distinction in track and field, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Individuals must compile a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and reach a provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons.

Melvin James Gabel, 84, of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully
on July 18, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Melvin was born on May 22, 1941, in Hays, Kansas to Leo and Emma
Gabel. He proudly served in the United States Navy, an experience that helped
spark his lifelong love of travel and&nbsp;exploration.
Whether it was a cross-country road trip or simply discovering a new backroad,
Melvin was always up for an adventure—especially if there was a good map
involved.

In 1964, he married Jeanette Dechant in Hays, Kansas. Together,
they raised three children: Ursula, Cornel, and Jessica. Later in life, Melvin
married Nancy Timmons in 2013. The couple made their home in Salina, where
Melvin enjoyed retirement by planning travels, visiting family, and studying
historical politics.

Melvin was a man of quiet curiosity, gentle humor, and kindness.
He found joy in the simple things: the best fried egg sandwiches, perfectly
folded laundry, and the company of family. His presence brought calm, and his
stories left lasting impressions on those lucky enough to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children and their spouses:
Ursula and Kevin Baird, Cornel and Donna Gabel, and Jessica and Ryan Cino; and
his beloved grandchildren: Kiera and Max Gabel, and Gabe and Cooper Cino.

Mel’s adventurous spirit, big laugh, and love for life will be
dearly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel
in Hays, KS, on Monday, July 28, 2025 at 10am.

Hays Community Theatre will stage the ABBA hit musical "Mamma Mia!" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State University Campus.

"Mamma Mia!" is a jukebox sensation based on a book by Catherine Johnson and music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from the band ABBA, said Director Pamela Grizzell.

"If you were a kid in the '70s, the place to go was Stardust Skate Center, and the tunes playing through the air were ABBA. It really touches a generation. They have taken all of the ABBA songs and created a sensational playlist that makes you want to sing along, dance along," she said.

The musical premiered at the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End in 1999.

The film adaptation was released in summer 2008 and starred Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan.

The story opens as friends and family are gathering for the wedding of young Sophie Sheridan. 

Sophie has never met her father and invites several men who had relationships with her mother, Donna, in an attempt to determine which one is her dad.

Her mother doesn't know of Sophie's plan, and it has been a long time since she has seen any of the men from her past.

Bill Gasper, assistant director, said the musical offers a little romance and surprise, and in the end, Donna reunites with her love.

"It's the theme of family, freindship and coming of age and discovering who you really are," Grizzell said.

The cast comprises 33 actors, with Rebecca Cole playing Sophie, the daughter, and Anita Walters playing Donna, the mother.

"We have a lot of senior actors in Hays who don't always have those opportunities to shine," Grizzell said, "and this is like the golden ticket for them. It provides a venue, an outlet for them to show off their craft."

Grizzell said the cast includes actors of all ages, and that is the meaning of community theater.

"I have to give it to the board, who chose this show," she said. "Not only is it something that the audience is going to love, but it also really reflects all the actors' abilities in our community, and it lets everybody get involved."

Gasper said he wanted to echo the praise of the cast.

"This show has a lot of choreography, more than most shows do. ... They have really held together and done a great job on that. Our principal actors are excellent," he said. "They sing well. Our ensemble, I think, sounds phenomenal when they are singing together.&nbsp;

"It is overall a very, very good dynamic show. I have been involved in a lot of productions, and this is really top-notch."

Grizzell said the actors in this production have a lot of insight.&nbsp;

"Because some of them are a little older, they bring life experiences with them," she said. "Monte Smith is the one who comes to mind. He has been with the community theater for a long time and even directed at the high school for a few years. 

"He brings a wealth of knowledge and instinct on where he needs to be and what he needs to do and how he can draw that extra emotion out."

She said several actors in the show have the ability to bring the show to life.

Gasper taught at Hays High School and still directs shows there, but he said he has been a bit overwhelmed by the move from the community theatre venue downtown to the performing arts center.&nbsp;

The crew began teardown on Sunday and has less than a week to fine-tune the sets, audio and lights.

The show's music director is Amy Staab, and the director of choreography is Nathan Leiker

It really touches a generation. They have taken all of the ABBA songs and created a sensational playlist that makes you want to sing along, dance along," she said.<figure>

 </figure>"We have a lot of senior actors in Hays who don't always have those opportunities to shine," Grizzell said, "and this is like the golden ticket for them. It provides a venue, an outlet for them to show off their craft."Grizzell said the cast includes actors of all ages, and that is the meaning of community theater."I have to give it to the board, who chose this show," she said. "Not only is it something that the audience is going to love, but it also really reflects all the actors' abilities in our community, and it lets everybody get involved."<figure>

 </figure>Gasper said he wanted to echo the praise of the cast."This show has a lot of choreography, more than most shows do. ... They have really held together and done a great job on that. Our principal actors are excellent," he said. "They sing well. Our ensemble, I think, sounds phenomenal when they are singing together.&nbsp;"It is overall a very, very good dynamic show. I have been involved in a lot of productions, and this is really top-notch."Grizzell said the actors in this production have a lot of insight.&nbsp;"Because some of them are a little older, they bring life experiences with them," she said. "Monte Smith is the one who comes to mind. He has been with the community theater for a long time and even directed at the high school for a few years. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and instinct on where he needs to be and what he needs to do and how he can draw that extra emotion out."<figure>

Hays Community Theatre to present ABBA hit musical 'Mamma Mia!'

WASHINGTON, D.C — Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, met with the Kansas FFA Association state officers, a group of six young leaders who represent almost 14,000 members across the state.

Among the visiting leaders was Kansas FFA State Secretary <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/986f6bc3-160b-40db-a858-b74d965e4b7d">Marisa Wasinger of Hays High School</a>.

Moran and the students discussed Moran's work in D.C. and the issues affecting Kansas agriculture and rural communities. The officers shared the impacts that FFA and agricultural education have had on them and how they can exercise leadership in their communities. 

The National FFA Association helps shape the next generation of leaders through the development of critical skills, and Moran said he will continue working to help our Kansas communities thrive for this and the next generation.

🎾 FHSU women earn ITA All-Academic team honor for 9th-straight year

ATLANTA - The 2024-25 Fort Hays State women's basketball team received special mention for its academic performance with the release of the WBCA NCAA Division II Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, announced Tuesday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

The squad completed the academic year with a team GPA of 3.685, finishing just outside the top 25 in the country. Eleven Tigers were listed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll this year, with four taking home the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award and two receiving the MIAA Academic Excellence Award.

Katie Wagner DeGarmo was selected as the winner of the MIAA Ken B. Jones Award for a second year in a row, given to the top student-athlete across all conference sports on an annual basis. DeGarmo and Kate Dilsaver both earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award for carrying a 4.00 GPA, while DeGarmo, Dilsaver, Olivia Hollenbeck and Brooke Loewe all received the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award for earning All-MIAA honors and holding a GPA of 3.50 or better.

Megan Earney, Sasha Koenig, Avery Lowe, Maddy Powell, Callie Ott, Ellie Stearns and Bailey Wilborn were also listed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, while DeGarmo, Dilsaver, Hollenbeck and Loewe were all named to the CSC Academic All-District team. DeGarmo went on to earn second team Academic All-America honors.

Steven Craig Massey,
born August 29, 1944, passed away at his home in Albany, Oregon, on May 31,
2025. Steven died of cancer after a short illness. Teacher, husband, father,
fly fisherman, hunter, oilfield roughneck, and soldier, Steven lived a good
life. Born in Hutchinson, Kansas, he attended schools in Nickerson, Hays and
Elkhart, Kansas, where he graduated in 1962, He attended Fort Hays Kansas State
College (now University) and earned a BA and MA from the University of Oregon.
Steven served as an infantry first lieutenant platoon leader in Vietnam in 1967
and 1968. For nearly two decades he taught elementary school in Eugene, Oregon
where he was also a realtor and owner of Franchetti’s. Steven was a city
councilman for Rainier, Oregon, from 2012 to 2020.

Steven was the third of
six children of Leo and Neva (Belden) Massey. He married Sandra Crutchfield of
Goodland, Kansas, in 1969; they divorced in 1972. In 1980 he married Rita
Kendrick. The parents of two sons, Abram of Whitefish, Montana, and Joseph of
Springfield, Oregon, they divorced in 2002. In 2008 he married Joy McWilliams.
He is also survived by siblings Kathryn Joy and Garth Massey of Portland and
three grandchildren.

From boyhood Steven was
an avid angler. (No one could cast more beautifully.) His well-trained bird
dogs were his best companions, along with many close friends. Steven was
gregarious, patient, sincere, and an avid reader who kept up with current
events. To say he will be missed only begins to express how his loved ones
feel.

Donations in Steven’s
name can be made to Sierra Club Oregon.

will be at the Alden Community Center in Alden, Kansas at 3:30 on Sunday, July

Paul John Cersovsky, age 71 of Ellis, Kansas died July 20, 2025,
at his home in Ellis.

John was born in Colby, Kansas on December 27, 1953, to Paul and
Jacqueline 'Jackie' (Delzeit) Cersovsky.

He worked as a security officer for Colby Community College for 25
years, retiring in December 2020. As a young man he enjoyed hunting and fishing
and later in life he started collecting stamps and coins.

John is survived by his wife: Jennie Cersovsky, of Ellis, KS;
children: Randall (Maranda) Cersovsky, of Healy, KS; Anita (Nabeel) Khokhar, of
Hutchinson, KS; Sarah (Mark) McArthur, of Cleveland, OK; and Eric (Kacey)
Cersovsky, of Topeka, KS.

His extended family includes stepchildren: Bonnie (James)
Brungardt, of Hays, KS; Felicia (Shawn) York, of Salina, KS; Savannah Clapper,
of Ellis, KS; and Donald (Ashley) Clapper, of Mesa, AZ.

Grandchildren: Landon, Ana, Korben, and Aylee Cersovsky, Hannah,
Noah, Christian Khokhar, Caden, Cale, Colter, and Chisolm McArthur. Step

Heavy rainfall Monday night slowed the Ellis County Fire Department’s response to a hay bale fire.

Ellis County Assistant Fire Chief Lyle Pantle said the department received a call at 8:22 p.m. for the fire south of the 1800 block of Saline River Road.

Pantle said reaching the site was difficult because the muddy field prevented fire trucks from accessing it. At 9:07 p.m., Ellis County Fire Chief Darin Myers radioed from the scene, saying that they expected to be on site for an extended period.

Pantle said lighter pickups were used to transport personnel and tools, including rakes, shovels and pitchforks, to spread out the hay bale since tightly rolled bales can take hours to burn. Additional rainfall also helped extinguish the fire.

Pantle said the official cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, but a lightning strike is suspected. No injuries were reported.

Ellis County Public Works Director Brendan Mackay said the fire department notified them at 10 p.m. about water over Saline River Road, but it had receded by 4 a.m. Tuesday.

No damage was reported as a result of the flooding.

Flash flood warnings were in effect for Ellis and Trego counties from about 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Bazaar on the Bricks Sidewalk Sale is coming to the heart of Hays to give local vendors, businesses and nonprofits a chance to set up shop.

The sale runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Main Street. Lee Ann June, executive director of the Bricks in Downtown Hays, said the event will feature more than 50 vendors, along with downtown retailers.

"There's everything from your homemade food items to different nonprofits, and items to wear and personalize," June said.

The annual sale stretches from Eighth to 12th streets. The Downtown Hays Market will also take place alongside Bazaar on the Bricks at 7:30 a.m. under the Downtown Hays Pavilion.

Bryan VonFeldt, treasurer of the Bricks board of directors, said the day will also be full of family fun with a bouncy house, bubble machine and chalk for kids.

Well, are you aware that 39% of Ellis County residents are working and yet are living BELOW the poverty level*. Feeding Hays is dedicated to combating food insecurity right here in our community. We do this by providing free, weekly, hot meals, donating to USD489 student lunch debt account and providing food through our pantry. It's incredibly rewarding work, and we see the positive impact every day. We have provided over 4,000 meals and donated over $2,500 towards student lunch debt in the past 12 months.As we move towards the next phase of growth, creating a stable and committed board plays a crucial role in guiding our efforts, helping us make important decisions, and meeting our goals for the future of Feeding Hays. We're a friendly, dedicated group, and we believe that a diverse range of voices makes us stronger. Feeding Hays seeking board members

HAYS - It appears mother nature may be the only thing able to stop the Hays Larks. 

The Larks (28-4-1, 20-4 RMBL) had won 13-straight overall and 15 in a row at home entering Monday's regular season finale against Dodge City and had a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when rain and lightning moved in forcing the game be eventually be called.

Thomas Lyssy singled, advanced to third on a
Trent Baker base hit then stole home to give the Larks the early lead.


The Larks now head to Wichita where they will begin defense of their NBC World Series title Thursday at 6 p.m. against the Seattle Blackfins.
