TOPEKA, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) with assistance from the DNA Doe Project has identified the remains of a previously unidentified homicide victim who was found in 1987 in Marion County, Kansas, according to a media release from the agency.

On September 21, 1987, a county road crew discovered human remains off 290th&nbsp;St., a rural road near Lincolnville, Kan. The investigation revealed the female victim had been murdered. Typical identification methods were unsuccessful since the remains were badly decomposed. At the time of the discovery, the Kansas State University Anthropology Department examined the remains and created a physical profile of the victim. It was determined she was a white female between 20-35 years, who had likely died two to three months prior to her discovery.&nbsp;

In February 2019, KBI agents and forensic scientists, with assistance from the DNA Doe Project, worked to identify the woman using DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy searching. During this search, a distant cousin was identified who had submitted DNA to an online service. A family tree was constructed and it was determined that the victim was closely related to the Carnall family from Cherryvale, Kan.

KBI agents were then able to connect with Leonard (Bud) and Donna Carnall of Corpus Christi, Texas, who had a missing daughter, Michelle. In October, the Carnalls voluntarily submitted DNA so that the KBI could test it against the woman's DNA. That testing recently confirmed that the remains found in Marion County back in 1987 belonged to their missing daughter.

The victim has been identified as Michelle E. Carnall-Burton. At the time she was killed, Carnall-Burton was 22-years-old and lived in Wichita. In 1986, she had left her home in Cherryvale, and lost touch with her family.

Carnall-Burton was a white female, 5 ft. 7 in. tall, and weighed approximately 140 lbs. She had brown hair and hazel eyes. She had a small cross tattooed on her lower left forearm.

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo. — A Kansas man has been sentenced prison after being convicted of sexually abusing two minor children.

Cody Curry, 31, Olathe, was sentenced Friday for crimes he committed against a child victim, according to a media release from the Buchanan County prosecuting attorney.

During the sentencing hearing, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kristina Zeit argued  for Curry to receive a sentence of 75 years in prison. 

In October, Curry was  found guilty of statutory sodomy in the first degree after the state presented evidence from  thirteen witnesses, including two child victims who described the abuse Cody Curry had inflicted upon them. 

 Both victims were present for the sentencing, along with their families. Buchanan County Circuit Court Judge Robb sentenced the defendant to 22 years in prison.

13 witnesses help prosecutors in Kansas man's sex crimes trial

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A federal lawsuit alleges that Kansas City, Kansas, police broke into a man’s home in the middle of the night and beat him before having him charged with battery of a law enforcement officer.

Joseph Harter, 43, claims in the lawsuit filed last week in federal court that he was temporarily blinded by blood in his eyes and went to a hospital after the October 2018 beating.

The police department and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County declined to comment Wednesday on the pending litigation, which alleges that Harter was the victim of illegal entry, battery, false imprisonment and excessive force.

The municipal battery charge that was filed against him was dropped less than two months later “due to prosecutor discretion and pending investigation,” according to court records.

Harter’s attorney, William Dunn, said he does not believe Harter had interacted with Kansas City, Kansas, police before that night. It was unclear why police would have been at his house.

“I think what you’re wanting to understand, and certainly I want to understand too but I don’t, is what are the police doing in there,” he said to a reporter. “That will hopefully come out as the case moves forward.”

Dunn said that by filing suit Harter is hoping for compensation for his $13,000 in medical bills and lasting trauma. Harter and Dunn also hope to prevent such an event from happening to another resident of Kansas City, Kansas, he said.

“Maybe, depending on how this all shakes out, maybe the unified government needs to take a look at their policies and procedures and who they’re hiring to carry them out,” he said.

Wyandotte County prosecutor’s office spokesman Jonathan Carter said in an email that no officers were charged in the case.

Suit: Police barged into Kansas home, beat man for no reason

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas man who molested two girls in the Sedgwick County area was sentenced Friday, according to the District Attorney's office.

&nbsp;Gene Cusick, 51 of Maize, was sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 25 years. On October 28, he pled guilty to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Between August of 2014 and October of 2018, Cusick molested two girls, both around the age of 10. One of the girls told her mother what Cusick had done when he watched her while the parents were at work. The child disclosed the crime after the family moved out of state.

The second young girl told her mother about being sexually assaulted by Cusick when he watched her at his home in Maize.

In each case, Cusick connected with the parents by telling them his 10 year old daughter died in a go-cart crash. Detectives with the Exploited and Missing Child Unit investigated the claim and found it to be false.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Brown also ordered lifetime parole for Cusick when he’s released from prison which includes electronic monitoring and registration as a sex offender.

GARDEN CITY – A former Kansas police officer has been sentenced to life in prison for child sex crimes, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Douglas Heit, 50, pleaded no contest in October in Finney County District Court to two Jessica's Law&nbsp;counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child younger than 14 years of age. 

District Judge Michael Quint yesterday ordered Heit to serve two concurrent&nbsp;sentences of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. During the hearing, four juveniles testified that Bowman pointed a handgun at them as they were leaving the skate park at Larned's&nbsp; Schnack Park in the evening of October 22.

Arraignment is scheduled for February 28, according to McNett. Bowman remains free on bond and as a condition of the bond was ordered to surrender all firearms to law enforcement.

Kansas man will stand trial for allegedly pulling a gun on 4 teens

LaVonne Kelch, age 93, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the Lane County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Dighton, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on April 10, 1926 in Lane County, Kansas, the daughter of George Joseph and Bessie Leah Rich Cross.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Lane County, Kansas, she was a teacher.

She was a member of the Healy United Methodist Church and UMW in Healy, Kansas.

On July 7, 1943 she married Emery Richard Kelch in Sweetwater, Texas.&nbsp; He passed away on October 4, 2004 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Two Sons - Maurice R. “Butch” Kelch of Garden City, Kansas, Valeny “Gene” Kelch of Garden City, Kansas, Two Daughters - Roxanna Felbush of Broomfield, Colorado, Tamara Piccone of Dighton, Kansas, Ten Grandchildren, Twenty Great Grandchildren and Seven Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents,Husband, Two Sons - John &amp; Jimmy Ray, One Sister - Elma Cross and four grandchildren.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Kansas Department of Labor and Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.1 percent in November. This was unchanged from 3.1 percent in October and a decrease from 3.3 percent in November 2018.

“This month's report shows continued improvement in labor market conditions in Kansas. The state gained jobs and maintained the lowest unemployment rate in 40 years,” said Secretary Delía García. “Unemployment insurance claims data shows widespread improvement over the last twelve months, but there is still room for improvement.”

The jobless rate in Ellis County was unchanged at 2 percent. The only county in northwest Kansas with an unemployment rate at 3 percent was Graham County. Wichita County posted the state's lowest jobless rate in November at 1.5 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 1,200 from October. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 900 from the previous month.

“Preliminary estimates for November show a modest increase in jobs for the state,” said Senior Labor Economist, Tyler Tenbrink. “The industry showing the most notable increase is transportation equipment manufacturing where workers returned to the payroll after being on strike in October.”

Longtime Goodland resident, Helen Marie Rohr, 86, passed away at her home in Goodland on Friday, December 13, 2019.

Helen was born on October 12, 1933, in Norton, Kansas to Leonard and Mary Jane (Whetstone) Johnson.&nbsp; She was one of 12 children.&nbsp; She attended school in Norton, Kansas through the 8th grade.

On May 10, 1968, she married Howard Kosse.&nbsp; They had 10 children.&nbsp; After his death in 1980, she married Walter Rohr on December 11, 1982, and to this union, 3 more children were added to the family.

Helen was a homemaker.&nbsp; She loved cooking and spending time with her family and grandchildren.&nbsp; She also loved woodworking, gardening and making wedding cakes.

Preceding her in death were her husband’s Howard and Walter, and one daughter Linda Foster.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by 7 brothers and 4 sisters.

She is survived by three daughters Jody DeHart (Arlo Tropf) of Imperial, NE, Patricia Krien of Greeley, CO and Paula Kear of Rapid City, SD; four sons Dale (Rhonda) Skrdlant of Alliance, NE, Roger Skrdlant of Norton, KS, Allen (Nicole) Skrdlant of Florence, CO and Phillip (Sok-Yong) Skrdlant of Des Moines, IA.&nbsp; She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Edna Johnson of Carlotta, CA.

Private family services for Helen will be held at a later date.

Joyce Philip Hurt Barr of Emporia entered into rest Wednesday, December 
11, 2019, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. She was 79.



Joyce was born October 28, 1940 in Hays, Kansas, to Ward Robert and 
Mildred Pauline (Lusebrink) Philip. She earned two Bachelors Degrees 
from Fort Hays State University — one in 1962 and one in 1963 — then began 
her teaching career in Ness City on February 1, 1963. Joyce married 
David Hurt on June 1, 1963 and they had two children; they divorced 
later on. Joyce returned to school and earned her Masters Degree from 
Emporia State University in 1981. She married Bryan Barr on July 1, 2000,&nbsp; and retired the same day as a teacher from Village Elementary School in 
Emporia.



Joyce is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her 
husband, Bryan Barr of the home; son, Dean (Lori) Hurt of Corvallis, 
Oregon; daughter, Jana (Col. John) Grimm of San Diego, California; 
stepson, Lee (Shelly) Barr of Canton, Texas; six grandchildren; and two 
great grandchildren.


A Memorial Service will be officiated by 
Pastor Karla Sheffy at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 3, 2020 at First

Alvin P “Dutch” Rohr’s life began on April 16, 1927; the son of Peter P and Mary (Klaus) Rohr near Pfeifer, KS. Alvin faithfully served his country at the end of WWII and during his service he guarded SS men in Germany and also secured buildings in Berlin looking for snipers. 

Alvin was united in marriage to Vera Pfannenstiel on October 22, 1951 in Hays, Kansas and was later married to Cleo Copeland Welty on January 28, 1978 in El Dorado, Kansas. Alvin enjoyed tinkering in his garage, working in his yard and woodworking. Alvin came from a generation where men could fix almost anything. 

In the 1960’s, he ran a small business from his home repairing small appliances. His greatest joys in life were his religion, working and his family. 

Alvin is survived by his daughters, Rose Ann Rohr, Lila (Gerald) Mercer, Judy (James) Rohr-Smith all of El Dorado, Juliann (Gerald) Rowland of Augusta; his sons, Elmer Rohr of El Dorado, Donald (Teresa) Rohr of Osborne, George (Adella) Welty of El Dorado, Richard Welty of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren. 

Alvin passed away on December 13, 2019 in El Dorado. He is preceded in death by his wives, Vera and Cleo; son, Julian Rohr; step-daughter, Irene Macy; brothers, Robert Rohr, Fred Rohr, Nick Rohr, Victor Rohr and Cyril Rohr; baby brother, Nicholas Rohr; sisters, Ottillia Rohr, Clementina Braun, Agnes Gross, Philomena Braun and Clarita Braun. 

Friends may gather at the Carlson Colonial Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 18 from 5-7 pm, a Rosary will be held at 7 pm. Visitation will also be held at Cline’s Mortuary on Friday, December 20 from 5-7pm with a Rosary held at 6:30pm at Cline's.

Hays USD 489 received awards in all four of the areas measured under the new Kansans Can Star Recognition program.

The district received bronze recognition for student postsecondary success, and copper awards for graduation rate and students being&nbsp; academically prepared for postsecondary success. The district also received a Commissioner's Award with Honor for postsecondary success.

The school board heard a report on the awards at its meeting Monday night.

"I think it is worth noting that there were four areas that we could receive awards in from the state, and we received them in all four areas," Superintendent Ron Wilson said. "I think that is a real feather in the cap to the work that is being done in our district.

"I know they are going to work hard to see if they can up the ante a little bit."

The postsecondary preparedness category looks at state assessments and ACT scores. Copper award winners must have at least the state average of students scoring at a level three or four on state assessments in English, math and science, which is students working above grade level.

Level two is students working at grade level and level one is students working below grade level.

The district for 2019 had 41.66 percent of students scoring in the top two tiers in math, 43.57 percent of students scoring in top two tiers in English and 43.57 percent of students scoring in the top two tiers in science. The state average was 34.6 percent.

Shanna Dinkel, assistant superintendent, said only one school district in the state received a silver award. Ten districts received bronze awards, and no districts received the gold award.

Dinkel also presented ACT scores. The average student composite score on the ACT for district students in 2018-19 was a 22. The state average was 21.2.

She said the scores in 2018-19 took a dip, but the district had more students taking the ACT because the state offered to pay for all students to take the test.

More Hays students than the state average reached benchmark scores for being ready for college in the areas of English, math, social science and biology.

Seventy-three percent of Hays students taking the ACT hit the benchmark for being ready for taking English composition, compared to 64 percent for the state average.

The district's graduation rate for 2018 was 88.5 percent. The state is always a year behind in reporting graduation numbers.

Dinkel also included statistics in her report on chronic absenteeism.

"We know that student attendance — those who are chronically absent — that will really impact them being on track for graduation and that postsecondary success," she said.

The elementary schools are celebrating attendance and posting school-wide attendance numbers near their offices.

For 2019, the district calculated its graduation rate at more than 90 percent. This would earn the district a bronze award for next year.

School districts that have a postsecondary success rate higher than is predicted according to its limiting factors receive a Commissioner's Award. Hays received a Commissioner's Award with Honor, which is the second highest level in that category.

Next year districts will also be judged on social emotional growth, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study and civic engagement as part of their accreditations.

A one page district report card is set to be released before the end of the month. That report card will be posted on the USD 489 website when it becomes available.

The USD 490 Endowment for Education Excellence presented a check to the school board Monday from proceeds from its fundraising auction in October.

The auction raised&nbsp;$25,170, which will be dedicated to further security upgrades at district schools.

"I think that is a real feather in the cap to the work that is being done in our district."I know they are going to work hard to see if they can up the ante a little bit."<h2>Postsecondary preparedness&nbsp;</h2>The postsecondary preparedness category looks at state assessments and ACT scores. Copper award winners must have at least the state average of students scoring at a level three or four on state assessments in English, math and science, which is students working above grade level.Level two is students working at grade level and level one is students working below grade level.The district for 2019 had 41.66 percent of students scoring in the top two tiers in math, 43.57 percent of students scoring in top two tiers in English and 43.57 percent of students scoring in the top two tiers in science. The state average was 34.6 percent.Shanna Dinkel, assistant superintendent, said only one school district in the state received a silver award. Ten districts received bronze awards, and no districts received the gold award.<figure>

The state average was 21.2.She said the scores in 2018-19 took a dip, but the district had more students taking the ACT because the state offered to pay for all students to take the test.More Hays students than the state average reached benchmark scores for being ready for college in the areas of English, math, social science and biology.Seventy-three percent of Hays students taking the ACT hit the benchmark for being ready for taking English composition, compared to 64 percent for the state average.<figure>

Hays school district receives Kansans Can Star awards

LAWRENCE, KAN. (AP) —&nbsp;Police in the college towns of Lawrence and Manhattan are warning students to be cautious as they continue to search for a serial rapist known to attack over holidays.

Police say they have connected 13 incidents in the two town over more than a decade to a single suspect but have yet to identify or catch him.

The incidents spanned from October 2000 to December 2008. All of the victims were students of either&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/kansas">Kansas</a>&nbsp;State University or the University of Kansas.

Police say each incident involved a masked intruder entering the victim’s off-campus residence, mostly between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. as the victim slept.

Police say the suspect is a white man, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old at the time of the assaults.

Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports drilling underway on one lease in Ellis County, two in Russell County and one in Stafford County.

Baker Hughes reports 799 active drilling rigs across the U.S., an increase of four oil rigs and a decline of four gas rigs.&nbsp; Canada checks in with 153 rigs, up 15 for the week.

Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports a lot of completion activity across the state as we approach the new year. Operators completed 30 wells last week in the eastern half of the state, and 24 in western Kansas. That includes one in Barton County and one in Stafford County, but both were dry holes.&nbsp; So far this year there are 1,357 newly completed wells. &nbsp;

Regulators gave their okay to 21 permits for drilling at new locations across Kansas, 1,049 so far this year, including nine in eastern Kansas and 12 west of Wichita.&nbsp; There's one new drilling permit in Ellis County and one in Stafford County.

Preliminary numbers from North Dakota's Department of Mineral Resources show another all-time record in that state's crude production. North Dakota operators produced more than one and a half million barrels per day in October, according to the latest numbers available.&nbsp;

Lawmakers in New Mexico say revenues from oil and gas production will be a bit lower than originally forecast, but still a "bonanza." Experts project an extra $797 million for the next fiscal year. That’s a dip from an earlier estimate but it’s still enough for lawmakers to consider budget increases for schools, health care, and crime-fighting initiatives.&nbsp;

U.S. crude production dropped slightly last week from the all-time record set the week before. The government reports domestic output of 12.788 million barrels per day, which is down about 100,000 barrels per day from the record. The four-week production average in the U.S. is ten percent higher than for the same period last year.

The Energy Information Administration reported a slight increase in domestic crude-oil stockpiles.&nbsp; For the week ending December 6, inventories were 447.9 million barrels. That's up 800,000 barrels from the week before and about four percent above the five-year seasonal average.

EIA reported the fifth consecutive weekly increase in gasoline stockpiles, while demand dropped.&nbsp; AAA says that should produce some downward pressure on prices at the pump.&nbsp; The national average dropped to just over $2.57/gal. The average across Kansas was just shy of $2.30. We spotted $2.12 at several locations in Hays and $2.20 across Great Bend. Your average cost to fill a 15-gallon tank will be about the same as last week, a dollar less than last month and five dollars less than six months ago.

In the monthly report, the government says crude oil prices will drop next year, but not as much as expected.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration now predicts London Brent will average $61 per barrel next year, a dollar more than the prediction they made last month. The agency pegs the average WTI price next year at about $55.50.

Next year is expected to be a good one for the nation's refineries, with increasing margins for diesel fuel, and record high volumes. The government credits upcoming international efforts to reduce the sulfur content in shipping fuel. EIA now predicts U.S. refinery runs will jump three percent next year to a record 17.5 million barrels per day.

Chevron on Wednesday reduced its long-term outlook for oil and gas prices because of that glut. The nation's No. 2 oil company plans to write down assets by ten to eleven billion dollars to reflect its price pessimism.

Trading began in Saudi Arabia for shares in Saudi Aramco in the world's largest-ever initial public stock offering. Shares surged in the first day of trading, giving the company a valuation of $1.88 trillion. That makes Aramco the largest listed company in the world, comfortably ahead of Microsoft and Apple.

Mexico announced the biggest oil discovery in that country since 1987.&nbsp; Officials said the on-shore field in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco has 500 million barrels of crude in proven, probable and possible reserves.&nbsp;

The International Energy Agency says in its monthly Oil Market Report that last week's extension of the OPEC+ production cuts may not be enough to stave off next year's predicted oil glut. IEA reports production could exceed consumption by upwards of 700,000 barrels per day.&nbsp; Analysts say the new production agreement last week did not have the full expected effect, largely because ongoing cheating by some OPEC members.

Goldman Sachs announced over the weekend that it will no longer finance Arctic energy development. The bank also said it will stop investing in new thermal coal mines anywhere in the world. The move is a mixed bag for the oil patch. Analysts say if other banks follow suit, coal financing could become "unbankable" according to a report in The Guardian newspaper.

Acts of piracy on shipping in West Africa have been steadily increasing in recent weeks. An oil tanker was attacked on Sunday in West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea. Bloomberg reports most of its crew were kidnapped. Earlier this month 19 sailors were kidnapped from a supertanker off the coast of Nigeria, and four crew members were taken from a smaller Greek tanker docked at a port in Togo in early November. According to the International Maritime Bureau, crew kidnappings in the Gulf of Guinea make up more than 80% of the worldwide total. Passing ships have been advised to stay at least 200 nautical miles and preferably 250 miles away from the coast.

Charlene V. (Gamble) Roll passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 
Redbud Village Nursing Care in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 90. She
 was born on January 26, 1929, in Hunnewell, Kansas to the late Charles 
E. and Ollie (Bridges) Gamble. Charlene graduated from South Haven High 
School in South Haven, Kansas and on October 22, 1949, she was united in
 marriage to Dale Roll in Winfield, Kansas. She and Dale owned and 
operated Roll Tank Service for 38 years. They were blessed with a 
daughter, Dalene.


Charlene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. When 
she wasn’t busy working, she enjoyed quilting, crafting, and hanging out
 with the morning coffee group. But the most important people in her 
life were her family.


Charlene is survived by her granddaughter, Michele Cozart and 
husband Craig of Olathe; niece, Treva Younie; and great-grandchildren, 
Peyton and Regyn Cozart.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ollie Gamble; 
husband, Dale Roll; sisters, Cora Hobaugh and Helen Tinsman; brothers, 
Garland and Archie Gamble; and daughter, Dalene Erwin.


Charlene was a woman of strong faith, abiding hope, and 
unconditional love. She will be greatly missed. Until we see her again 
in her eternal home, she will live forever in our hearts.


A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 23, 2019 at the 
Baptist Church in Plainville starting at 10 A.M. Inurnment will follow 
at the Plainville City Cemetery.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —A suspect in the October shooting at a Kansas bar that killed four people and injured five others is now back in a Kansas jail after an arrest in Mexico.

Hugo Villanueva-Morales, 29, was booked over the weekend into the Wyandotte County Detention Center, according to online jail records.

He is a suspect in the shooting at a Tequila KC bar.  Villanueva-Morales and another man, 23-year-old Javier Alatorre, are charged each with four counts of first-degree murder, with bond set at $1 million each. Alatorre was arrested shortly after the shooting.&nbsp;

Bar shooting suspect returned from Mexico to Kansas jail

KANSAS CITY– A Virginia man was convicted by a federal jury In Kansas City Friday for his role in wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies as part of a nearly $3 million romance fraud scheme, according to the United State's Attorney's office.

Henry N. Asomani, 34, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ghana, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and two counts of money laundering. The court ordered Asomani taken into federal custody at the close of today’s proceedings to await sentencing.

Evidence introduced during the trial indicated that Asomani was the middle man who received the proceeds of the fraud conspiracy from unknown co-conspirators into his bank accounts. Asomani transferred the funds among various accounts; he kept a portion of the proceeds for himself, and funneled the rest of the proceeds to co-conspirators in Ghana. Asomani operated five different companies with 16 different accounts at eight different banks.

Asomani received a total of $2,993,354 from more than a dozen victims across the United States, including three victims in the Kansas City metropolitan area, from Sept. 15, 2015, to Oct. 17, 2017. Although bank investigators and FBI agents repeatedly warned Asomani that his bank accounts were receiving the proceeds of a fraud scheme, he continued to receive the funds and simply closed accounts when funds were frozen, then opened new accounts at a different bank.

Unknown co-conspirators targeted individuals through online dating websites with various romance frauds. The unknown co-conspirators impersonated individuals who were involved in businesses overseas. They convinced the victims that they needed funds to help with moving gold from a foreign country, orphanage expenses, and school and travel expenses. The co-conspirators told the victims they would share the profits when the gold was returned to the United States. In fact, none of the victims received any profit or received any gold from the co-conspirators.

For example, one victim who resides in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, set up a profile on ChristianMingle.com following the death of her husband to brain cancer. In October 2015, an individual claiming to be “Larry B. White” initiated contact with her. Following numerous conversations by email and telephone, “White” convinced the victim to invest in a Ghana gold mine. “White” promised a 40 percent return on the investment of money. From November 2015 through January 2016, under the direction of “White,” the victim sent funds to multiple entities by check and wire totaling approximately $3,292,000. Of that amount, $2,292,000 was transferred to accounts controlled by Asomani. Asomani spent $50,000 of those proceeds to make a down payment on a 2019 silver Lexus NX300. To date, the victim has not received any money or gold profits from “White.”

Another victim, who resides in Kansas City, Missouri, met “Bradley Fischer” on ChristianMingle.com. “Fischer” convinced the victim to send funds for school expenses, travel expenses, and to start a new life in Kansas City. On July 19, 2017, the victim wired $24,000 to Asomani’s bank account. “Fischer” promised to pay the victim back when he got to Kansas City. &nbsp;To date, the victim has received $1,000 back from “Fischer.”

Other victims reside in Kansas, New Jersey, Alaska, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas and Iowa.

Following the presentation of evidence, the jury in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., deliberated for approximately two hours before returning the guilty verdict to U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark, ending a trial that began Monday, Dec. 9.

Under federal statutes, Asomani is subject to a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison without parole on each of the four conspiracy and wire fraud counts, and up to 10 years in federal prison without parole on each of the two money laundering counts. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. Asomani, 34, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ghana, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and two counts of money laundering. The court ordered Asomani taken into federal custody at the close of today’s proceedings to await sentencing.Evidence introduced during the trial indicated that Asomani was the middle man who received the proceeds of the fraud conspiracy from unknown co-conspirators into his bank accounts. Asomani transferred the funds among various accounts; he kept a portion of the proceeds for himself, and funneled the rest of the proceeds to co-conspirators in Ghana. Asomani operated five different companies with 16 different accounts at eight different banks.Asomani received a total of $2,993,354 from more than a dozen victims across the United States, including three victims in the Kansas City metropolitan area, from Sept. 15, 2015, to Oct. 17, 2017. Although bank investigators and FBI agents repeatedly warned Asomani that his bank accounts were receiving the proceeds of a fraud scheme, he continued to receive the funds and simply closed accounts when funds were frozen, then opened new accounts at a different bank.Unknown co-conspirators targeted individuals through online dating websites with various romance frauds. The unknown co-conspirators impersonated individuals who were involved in businesses overseas. They convinced the victims that they needed funds to help with moving gold from a foreign country, orphanage expenses, and school and travel expenses. The co-conspirators told the victims they would share the profits when the gold was returned to the United States. In fact, none of the victims received any profit or received any gold from the co-conspirators.For example, one victim who resides in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, set up a profile on ChristianMingle.com following the death of her husband to brain cancer. In October 2015, an individual claiming to be “Larry B. White” initiated contact with her. Following numerous conversations by email and telephone, “White” convinced the victim to invest in a Ghana gold mine. “White” promised a 40 percent return on the investment of money. From November 2015 through January 2016, under the direction of “White,” the victim sent funds to multiple entities by check and wire totaling approximately $3,292,000. Of that amount, $2,292,000 was transferred to accounts controlled by Asomani. Asomani spent $50,000 of those proceeds to make a down payment on a 2019 silver Lexus NX300. To date, the victim has not received any money or gold profits from “White.”Another victim, who resides in Kansas City, Missouri, met “Bradley Fischer” on ChristianMingle.com. “Fischer” convinced the victim to send funds for school expenses, travel expenses, and to start a new life in Kansas City. Man convicted in KC in $3M romance fraud scheme

The angels called Clifford James Werth 
home on December 12, 2019. He was born in Schoenchen, Kansas on 
September 7, 1933 to Rudolph and Irene (Zimmerman) Werth. He resided at 
Via Christi with his wife Helen.

Clifford married the love of his life 
“the girl from Hays” Helen Frances Braun at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
in Hays on October 6, 1952. They had 67 beautiful years of marriage and 
were blessed with six children: Robert Werth (Silvana, James Werth 
(Susan, Dick Werth (Kay, Dave Werth (Debbie, Tim Werth (Sandee) and 
Kay Gottschalk (Gene). Sixteen grandchildren: Aaron Gottschalk (Julie, 
Clint Gottschalk (Cristan, Brandon Werth (Amanda, Erica Bittel 
(Brett, Travis Werth, Holly Gottschalk, Amy Evans (Dave, Matt Werth 
(Jen, Shelly Werth, Cory Werth, Kelsey Bailey (Sam, Tyler Werth, 
Preston Werth (Macy Ziegler, Austin Werth (Adiba Matin, Collin Werth 
and Tanner Werth. Ten great-grandchildren: Eleanor and Frances Bittel, 
Sadie and Connor Werth, Bladyn and Bodhi Werth, Charles and Patrick 
Evans, Trinity Gottschalk, Emmett Bailey, and two step

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Roger Werth and wife Carrie, and a sister Nancy Ingle.

 1968 he opened Hays Car and Truck Alignment. After many successful 
years, he retired and began traveling. Fishing, having fun at his lake 
house with his best cousins for 22 years then spilled over to 20 plus 
years as winter snowbirds. Golfing and deep-sea fishing became his new 
winter sports. Visiting the casinos was also a favorite pastime. Many 
good times were also spent watching the KC Royals and the Jayhawks.

am until 9:45 on Thursday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral 
Home.&nbsp; A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 pm, a parish vigil
 service will be at 6:30, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at
