Joyce Philip Hurt Barr

Joyce Philip Hurt Barr of Emporia entered into rest Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. She was 79.

Joyce was born October 28, 1940 in Hays, Kansas, to Ward Robert and Mildred Pauline (Lusebrink) Philip. She earned two Bachelors Degrees from Fort Hays State University — one in 1962 and one in 1963 — then began her teaching career in Ness City on February 1, 1963. Joyce married David Hurt on June 1, 1963 and they had two children; they divorced later on. Joyce returned to school and earned her Masters Degree from Emporia State University in 1981. She married Bryan Barr on July 1, 2000,  and retired the same day as a teacher from Village Elementary School in Emporia.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Bryan Barr of the home; son, Dean (Lori) Hurt of Corvallis, Oregon; daughter, Jana (Col. John) Grimm of San Diego, California; stepson, Lee (Shelly) Barr of Canton, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place.

A Memorial Service will be officiated by Pastor Karla Sheffy at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 3, 2020 at First United Methodist Church, 823 Merchant St. in Emporia, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mildred Lusebrink-Philip, Rose Lusebring-Summers and Joyce Philip-Barr Scholarship at Pittsburg State University in care of Charter Funerals.

The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Jan 4 for a gravesite gathering at Mount Allen Cemetery.
