Phillip R. Hammond, 69, of Ulysses, Kansas, passed away at his home early in the morning of June 14th with his wife and son at his side following a battle with cancer. Phil was born on March 23rd, 1955, to Raymond and Mignon Hammond in Garden City, Kansas, and was a lifelong resident of Ulysses, graduating from Ulysses High School in 1973.

Phil was raised on the farm north of Ulysses and loved the farming life with his dad and raised livestock while in high school. He left the farm after graduation and worked in delivery, sales and a manufacturing business until he made the decision to strike out on his own, which eventually led him to start his own business in remodeling and construction. He had a successful career over the next 30 years.

In 1980, Phil met his future spouse, Teresa, and wed in 1982, going on to have one son, Aaron Hammond.

Phil was a talented and determined man, always working to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. Phil was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father. His knowledge and guidance was the foundation of his family. Anyone who knew Phil knew that he was a truly special father, husband and friend.

Phil was also a passionate mechanic, sport-shooter, craftsman and patriot and could often be found creating new projects from his own design in his shop at home.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mignon Hammond of Ulysses, and sisters, Dorothy Hollingsworth of Antelope, California, and Lucinda Butler of Stockton, Kansas.

He is survived by his spouse, Teresa Hammond; his son, Aaron Hammond; and granddaughter, Piper.

Virgil Keith Howe, former Dean of Health and Life Sciences at Fort Hays State University, died May 27, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living in Hays, Kansas. He was 93.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Virgil was born April 22, 1931, on a farm outside of King City, Missouri to Fred and Luella (Jameson) Howe. He started school in a one-room country schoolhouse and graduated from King City High School as salutatorian for the class of 1949. He attended Gila Junior College, later Eastern Arizona Junior College, for two years, before transferring to Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In March of 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a medical technician in Tripoli, Libya and later transferring to Athens, Greece where he remained until his discharge in 1956. After returning to the U.S., he married Virginia Mae (Birbeck) on June 3, 1956, in King City.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He enrolled at Northwest Missouri State College and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1957. He accepted a graduate assistantship in the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he received a Master of Science degree with a major in botany in 1961. He was then accepted into the graduate program of the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Iowa State University, majoring in forest pathology with a special emphasis in the problems of shade trees. He received his PhD in 1964.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Virgil’s first faculty position was as an associate professor of biological science at Northwestern State College of Louisiana in Natchitoches. In 1968, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. He served as Chair of the Department for two years and was subsequently appointed Associate and Acting Provost and Academic Vice President at WIU.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1988, he was encouraged by Dr. Gene Fleharty to seek appointment as the first dean of the new College of Health of Life Sciences at Fort Hays State University. Over the nine years he served as dean at FHSU, three new degree programs were developed, the number of student majors nearly doubled, two new academic departments were created, and he was involved in procuring more than seven hundred thousand dollars in external funding support for the College. Additionally, he served as a member of the External Advisory Board of Kansas Health Institute and the Advisory Board for the development of the Primary Care Physician Education Program at the University of Kansas Medical Center.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Virgil had a long-standing commitment to Rotary International. Upon retiring from FHSU, he was elected as Rotary District Governor for northwest Kansas from 1998-1999.&nbsp;

Upon Virginia's passing, he remained at Homestead of Hays, where he cherished the companionship of his extended family, the residents and staff.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He is survived by a daughter, Christine and husband, Mark Milford, Kingman, KS; a son, Daniel and wife, Amy Howe, Lexington KY; six grandchildren, Jessica Quinn and husband, Sean Greenlee, Haysville, KS; Grant and wife, Caroline Quinn, Brunswick, GA; Ian Quinn, Wichita, KS; Wesley Howe, Lexington, KY; Austin and wife, Sarah Howe, Elmira, NY; and Zachary Howe, Lexington, KY; two step-grandsons, Jacob Milford, Wichita, KS; Riley Milford, Maize, KS; three great-grandchildren, Vivienne, Adele, and Rhett Greenlee, Haysville, KS; two-step-great-grandchildren, Anghus and Amia Houghtelling, Brunswick, GA; one brother, Robert Howe and wife, Anne, King City, MO; sister-in-law and husband, Mary and Jack Bush, Dallas, TX; sister-in-law, Mimi Birbeck of Mankato, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;added yet another talented wing to his 2024-25 roster with the signing of 2024 All-Big Ten selection&nbsp;Coleman Hawkins&nbsp;(Sacramento, Calif./Prolific Prep/Illinois)&nbsp;to a Financial Aid Agreement on Tuesday (June 18).

A 6-foot-10, 230-pound wing, Hawkins arrives at K-State after spending the last 4 seasons (2020-24) at Illinois, where he was apart of 96 wins, 4 Big Ten Championships (2 regular season and 2 tournament titles) and 4 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2023-24. He was a key part of the Fighting Illini’s first run to the Elite Eight since 2005, leading the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg.), steals (1.5 spg.) and blocks (1.1 bpg.) and ranking third in scoring (12.1 ppg.) en route to earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors from the AP.

Following his senior season, Hawkins declared for the 2024 NBA Draft and was invited to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, where he was among a group of standout performers out of 120 prospects. He finished with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting in his final scrimmage. He withdrew from the draft before the deadline on May 29.

Hawkins will have one season of eligibility remaining after the NCAA granting student-athletes who played during the 2020-21 athletic season an extra season of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hawkins has scored nearly 1,000 career points in his college career, which includes 126 games at Illinois (2020-24) with 82 starts. He has totaled 979 career points on 44.2 percent (345-of-781) shooting, including 31.9 percent (118-of-370) from 3-point range, and 69.8 percent (171-of-245) from the free throw line, with 581 rebounds, 256 assists, 115 steals and 102 blocks in 2,964 minutes played. He is the only player in Illinois school history with at least 900 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals in a career.

Among Hawkins’ 979 career points were 592 in Big Ten play, coming on 44.3 percent (208-of-470) shooting. In addition, he has tallied double figures in 5 of his 8 career NCAA Tournament games, averaging 7.6 points on 41.8 percent (23-of-55) shooting with 4.6 rebounds per game. For his career, he is averaging 7.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.8 blocks in 23.5 minutes per game.

Hawkins has collected 6 20-point games and one 30-point game in his career, along with 6 double-doubles and one triple-double. He scored a career-high 30 points in the Illini’s win against Iowa on Feb. 24, 2024, connecting on 9-of-11 field goals, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, in less than 30 minutes of action. He tallied the fifth triple-double in Illinois history on Nov. 29, 2022, with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over Syracuse.

The bulk of Hawkins’ production has come in the last 2 seasons (2022-24), in which, he has posted 749 points (11.0 ppg.) on 44.7 percent (267-of-598) shooting, including 32.9 percent (96-of-292) from 3-point range, with 419 rebounds (6.2 rpg.), 195 assists (2.9 apg.), 87 steals (1.3 spg.) and 76 blocks (1.1 bpg.) in 2,180 minutes played (32.1 mpg.) while starting 68 of the Fighting Illini’s last 71 games. In that span, he scored in double figures 38 times with 6 20-point games, one 30-point game, 6 double-doubles and one triple-double.

Hawkins’ scoring ability increased each season at Illinois capped by his 12.1 points per game average as a senior in 2023-24 in which he posted career-bests for field goal percentage (45.1), 3-point field goal percentage (36.9) and free throw percentage (79.2). He scored in double figures in 22 of 35 games played with 4 20-point games highlighted by his 30-point effort against Iowa on Feb. 24. He also had a pair of double-doubles in road games at Michigan (21 points, 10 rebounds; Jan. 18, 2024) and Northwestern (22 points, 13 rebounds; Jan. 24, 2024).

As a senior, Hawkins led the Fighting Illini in rebounding (6.1 rpg.), steals (1.5 spg.) and blocks (1.1 bpg.) while he was third in scoring and 3-point field goal percentage (36.9). He was named to the watch list for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award before earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors from the AP, third team honors from the media and honorable mention accolades from the league coaches.

Hawkins jumped to the forefront as a junior in 2022-23, leading the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg.) and assists (3.0 apg.) while placing second in blocks (1.2 bpg.) and third in scoring (9.9 ppg.) in starting all 33 games. He had 16 double-digit scoring games, including a pair of 20-point efforts, to go with 3 double-double and his first career triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Syracuse on Nov. 29, 2022. He opened the season with a 23-point, 12-rebound performance against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 7, 2022.

Hawkins began his ascension as a sophomore in 2021-22, averaging 5.9 points on 44.2 percent (68-of-154) shooting with 4.3 rebounds in playing in all 33 games with 14 starts. He started the first 10 games of the season, which included his first career double-digit scoring game (13 points vs. Jackson State, Nov. 9, 2021) and first double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds vs. Arkansas State, Nov. 12, 2021). He played nearly 25 minutes in the Illini’s win over K-State at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, posting 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. His season-high 18 points came against Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament on March 11, 2022, while had a near double-double (10 points, 8 rebounds) in the Illini’s NCAA First Round win over Chattanooga on March 18, 2022.

Hawkins played in 25 games off the bench as a true freshman in 2020-21 for an Illinois squad that won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. He scored in 12 games, including a 5-point, 4-rebound and 2-assist effort in his first career game against North Carolina A&amp;T on Nov. 25, 2020.

A native of Sacramento, Calif., Hawkins played his high school basketball at prep powerhouse Prolific Prep in Northern California, leading his team to a 31-3 overall record and the program’s first-ever Grind Session Championship prior to the cancellation of GEICO Nationals due to COVID-19. He averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-high 6.5 assists as a senior in 2019-20.

Hawkins comes from a basketball family, as his father,&nbsp;Rodney, played at San Diego State (1987-88) while his 3 older sisters (Ashley,&nbsp;Taylor&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bailey) all played at the collegiate level. His father started his college basketball career at Colby Community College in Colby, Kan., before joining the Aztecs.

Hawkins is the 10th player to sign with the Wildcats for the 2024-25 season, including the eighth Division I transfer.

Blowing dust causes closure for portion of Highway 40 in Ellis County

History came to life in front of the historic Patee House museum, the original home of the Pony Express, as the historic mail system rode again.   

People from near and far celebrated and sent off three riders to kick off the Pony Express re-ride, recreating the historic journey made from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California.  

The Re-Ride is held every year by the National Pony Express Association, which covers all eight states of the journey.  

Penny Orrick has been taking part in the event for 23 years and says for her it started with her love for horses, but as she learned the history of the Pony Express.  

"I've learned to value the history behind it a lot more, especially now that my kids are old enough to be able to do it with me, it's fun to be able to explain to them why we're doing it besides just to have fun on a horse," Orrick tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

The journey will consist of 10 days, just like in 1860.  Orrick says if anything the journey is easier now than it was back in 1860.  

"We have better routes, we have escorts, that kind of thing," Orrick explains. "I know a lot of the times when they make the deciding factor on when to do the reenactment it has to do with the moon, to make sure there's enough moonlight during the night ride that kind of thing." 

Orrick says if anything the difficulty is it being a lost art with not as many people riding horses.  

National Pony Express Association president Pam Dixon Simmons says it takes about 700 volunteers to get the event done 

"It takes about 700 riders' horses to get across all eight states in the 10 days, and that's the goal, we want to do it in 10 days just like in 1860," Dixon Simmons says.

History comes to life as the Pony Express rides again from St. Joseph

Teacher shortages across Kansas are worsening, so school districts are seeking new ways to recruit and retain teachers.

Area school administrators met at Fort Hays State University on June 6 to discuss teacher recruitment and retention strategies.

In fall 2023, the state had an estimated 1,810 teacher vacancies, according to the Kansas State Department of Education. In fall 2022, there were 1,650 reported vacancies.

Hays USD 489 has four open teaching positions and, at this point, has no applicants for the positions, said Superintendent Ron Wilson via email.

USD 489 is looking for a high school math teacher, an elementary vocal music teacher, an elementary special education teacher and a teacher at Early Childhood Connections.

According to Educate Kansas, the specialties in the greatest demand are special education, math and science.

"Although we have dodged the teacher shortage issue the last several years, we are now starting to feel the impact inside our district with having no applicants for these four open positions," Wilson said.

"We are still hopeful that we will be able to fill these positions before the start of school in August."

He said the district is looking at creative ways to fill these positions. 

Administrators remain optimistic that the positions could be filled using the transition to teaching program or the newly approved Kansas Department of Education teacher apprentice program. 

Kansas universities, including Fort Hays State University, participate in these programs.

If the district is unable to find anyone interested in those programs, district administrators will consider long-term substitutes and sponsored student teaching candidates to fill positions, Wilson said.

Dave Younger, former legislator and superintendent for USD 214, said the school district in Ulysess owned houses that they offered to new teachers for the first year or two of their tenures.

He said the small school district in western Kansas struggles to compete against larger communities.

Younger said his district had to change its recruiting strategies.&nbsp;

"I was sitting there at our little booth, and nobody, nobody came," he said. "There was a line coming around the corner. Where are those people going? It was Spring Hill and Shawnee Mission."

Young people want to live in urban areas, Younger said. "They often eventually want to come home to rural areas to raise their families, but not initially, he said.

Instead of attending college teacher fairs and talking to seniors, they targeted underclassmen.

"We brought them in, bought them dinner, and just had a conversation with them," he said. "It was not a hard sales pitch, but we were starting to turn a corner then."

The district also offered a signing bonus for new teachers.

Last year, the<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5d3f9e9c-4044-45c1-8148-518991be5f42">&nbsp;Victoria school district considered going to a four-day school week in hopes of attracting more applicants for teaching positions.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;That plan did not move forward.

Superintendent Kimberly Woolf said at that time the district was only receiving about two applications per open position.&nbsp;

Cris Seidel is the program director for Educate Kansas, which assists 18 school districts from across the state with recruiting.

"It really is complex," she said. "There's not going to be one magic bullet that actually fixes this. There are so many layers to this."

Common barriers she sees are housing and access to child care. However, she said each district needs to identify barriers specific to their communities.

"That connection, that culture, is so vital when we think about the teacher shortages," she said.

Jennifer Olt, a 19-year veteran teacher currently working for USD 489, said relationships keep her teaching.

"I'm a walking billboard for my profession," she said. "If I don't show [my students] every day that I want to be there and that I love them, I need to quit. I do it for them. I want to see them succeed."

However, Olt said teachers also want to feel their administrators value them.

"That comes from at a district level who says we understand that you as a person matter," she said.

This comes when teachers say they think their profession is not valued.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/69cf19f7-809f-41d6-aeaf-4782d6b69403">A 2023 survey of teachers in the Hays district found 83% of teachers surveyed said they were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with how society views teaching. This was even higher than the state average of 74%.</a>

Eighty-eight percent of Hays teachers surveyed said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the superintendent's leadership, which was much higher than the state average of 56%.

Olt said flexibility in her work schedule is also important to her as a working mother.

She said she was grateful her principal at Hays High School allowed her to take off time to visit her daughter's school Valentine's Day party.

Olt also encouraged districts to tap into high school teacher career programs similar to the one Hays High has implemented and she leads.

Hays, other Kansas districts seek ways to address teacher shortage

Hays Post 6:26 p.m. UPDATE: Interstate 70 between Hays and WaKeeney is back open. But officials are still urging motorists to use caution and be prepared for area of reduced visibility due to blowing dust.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City has also issued a blowing dust advisory for portions of central, south central, southwest and west central Kansas.

5:25 p.m. UPDATE:&nbsp; The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed eastbound I-70 between WaKeeney and Hays to allow for cleanup of vehicle crashes blocking the roadway.

Blowing dust is causing reduced visibility in northwest Kansas. Motorists traveling through the region are advised to use caution and delay travel, if possible, until conditions improve.

KDOT does not have an estimated time for reopening.

Visibility is less than three feet, Braun said.&nbsp;

Blowing dust is also occurring to a lesser degree in eastern Ellis County.&nbsp;

Braun urged drivers to slow down or avoid the area if possible.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Dodge City says&nbsp;strong surface winds today and tonight will be sustained out of&nbsp;the south at 25-35 mph with gusts 50 mph or greater.

4:15 p.m. UPDATE: Reduced visibility also being reported in the WaKeeney area.&nbsp;

ELLIS COUNTY - Blowing dust is causing reduced visibility on I-70 between Hays and Russell. Use caution if traveling in the area. Glenda Kaye Daves, age 81, died Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart, Kansas. She was born April 11, 1943, in Clayton, New Mexico, the daughter of Berlin and Zelpha “Tommy” (Stewart) Crites.

Kaye married Tracy Daves on August 21, 1960. Although she worked at J&amp;J Oilfield Services, Boaldin Appliance and DJ’s Variety Store, being a mom and wife was what she took the most pride in. She loved all animals and fed everything in the neighborhood including squirrels, skunks, birds, cats and dogs. She loved her time spent with friends and family, eating, shopping and playing Bridge. Kaye was a member of Hillcrest Southern Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Allen Daves of Durant, Oklahoma; daughters, Lisa Tucker and husband, John, of Elkhart, and Lana Daves of Elkhart; grandchildren, Tiffani Tucker Dudley and husband, David, Kayla Daves Langston and husband, Chris Greenhaw, Jarrod Tucker and wife, Linell, Peyton Daves and wife, Patience, Makenna Daves and Megan Daves; great-grandchildren, Kacey Langston, Gunner Langston, Cooper Dudley, Kenadi Dudley, Paisley Greenhaw, Kyla Tucker, Luke Tucker, Carter Daves, and Gabby Tucker; and great-great-grandchild, Kendal Langston.

Kaye is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tracy Daves; and grandson, Jordan Forbit.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 18, at 2:00 PM at the First Church of God in Elkhart with Reverend Terrell Giddens officiating. Interment will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery. Patricia Lea Feezor, age 81, died Saturday, June 15, 2024, at her home in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born July 27, 1942, in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, the daughter of Russell and Mary Lou (Johnson) Ryser.

Pat grew up in Cheyenne Wells and graduated from Cheyenne Wells High School. She then furthered her education at Fort Hays State University where she obtained a bachelor’s degree. Pat taught school for one year in Hugoton after marrying Marvin Feezor on September 7, 1963, in Cheyenne Wells. They were happily married for 61 years. She was the office manager and co-owner with her husband, of Satanta Lumber Company, Sublette Furniture Store and in 1993 they moved to Ulysses and started Ulysses Building Supply. In her free time, Pat was an avid quilter, belonging to a quilting guild, an active member of the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and enjoyed traveling. She and Marvin had the opportunity to travel to many countries and most of the United States. They built a cabin in New Mexico, where they made many fond memories. Pat’s greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandson, and she thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with them. Pat was also a member of the Satanta Arts Council and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Garden City.

Pat is survived by her husband, Marvin, of their home; son, Eric Feezor and wife, Holly, of Ulysses; daughter, Karla Hennebold and husband, Jon, of North Plains, Oregon; brothers, Randy Ryser and wife, Shirley, of McCook, Nebraska, and Kelly Ryser and wife, Karen, of Hays, Kansas; sister, Carmen Medina and husband, Jess, of Kyle, Texas; and her four adored grandchildren, Andrea Feezor, Nick Feezor, Ben Hennebold and Amelia Henelbold; great-grandson, Levi Hennebold; and nieces and nephews.

This time of year combines and other types of farming equipment are making their way through fields, down highways, roads and local streets.

While harvesting a wheat field on Saturday, the driver of one of the four combines working the lot noticed a spark of flames between the wheat stalks. 

Quickly afterward, fire engulfed a farm machine in the 4400 block of East Meadow Road. Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the field at 12:35 p.m., according to Sheriff Roger Soldan.

"They were cutting wheat when one of them noticed a fire in the wheat, so they went to cut around it, trying to isolate it, and the combine stalled," Soldan said. "Which resulted in the loss of the combine too."

"It may have been the machine that had an issue — they just didn't know at the time."

Soldan said the charred combine was a John Deere S670. With the fire spreading to about 80 acres of wheat, the total loss was more than&nbsp; $200,000. Soldan said no one was injured as a result of the fire.&nbsp;

The Kansas City Chiefs announced dates for training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

This marks the 14th year of training camp at Missouri Western. All times and dates are subject to change. All practices will take place on the Mosaic Training Fields. There'll be 19 practices in all.

Open practices begin July 21 and conclude August 15. All training camp practices will be free of charge to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Training camp tickets must be reserved in advance at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chiefs.com/trainingcamp/" target="_blank">www.chiefs.com/trainingcamp/</a>.

Due to expected interest and demand, attendance each day will be limited. Ticket reservations will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 for Chiefs Season Ticket Members followed by the general public on Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m.

Fans can reserve a maximum of six tickets per practice, and can reserve tickets for a maximum of three separate practices.

Paid practice days will require advance payment to reserve tickets, while only Chiefs Season Ticket Members have the option to reserve tickets for the exclusive Season Ticket Member days.

Chiefs Tailgate Suites will be available for purchase in the North Endzone for groups of 10 or more. Missouri Western will charge a $5&nbsp;admission fee&nbsp;on three different days – Sunday, July 21; Saturday, July 27 (Family Fun Day) and Sunday, August 4.

The Chiefs will host two free, exclusive Season Ticket Member days that are&nbsp;not&nbsp;open to the public – Monday, July 22 and Wednesday, August 7. Ambassador Day will take place on Monday, July 29 and Military Appreciation Day will be Thursday, August 15. Team autograph sessions are scheduled to take place July 21, July 22, July 27, August 4 and August 7.

🏈 Chiefs announce 2024 training camp schedule

Hays High School claimed a pair of Kansas State High School Clay Target League state titles over this past week.

Hays won the Class 1A Skeet Team Overall competition with a team total of 435. Their score was 46 better than second place. Logan Schmidt was the team's high gun with a 91. Daniel Maier scored a 90. Cole McDonough, Jaxon Stoffel and Gunner Weigel rounded out the team score.

Schmidt's 91 was good enough for a second place tie in the individual placings. Maier tied for fourth, McDonough tied for sixth with an 88 and Stoffel tied for eighth with an 86. Weigel finished just outside the top ten in a tie for eleventh with an 80.

Hays High also claimed the 2A Trap Shooting Novice title with a score of 361. LaCrosse finished second at 333. Brandon Dague was the high gun for the team with an 83. Callie Bets, Makayla Lewallen, Jack McMurtrie, and Eleanor Stoffel rounded out the scoring. Lewallen was second on the team and the top female high gun with a 72.

Dague was the competition's top novice male. 

The junior varsity shot a 384 and placed 14th. The varsity team finished eighth with a 472. 

 Kaeilin Maier was the junior varsity's female high gun and had the highest team score with an 86. Dakota Schmidt was the team's male high gun at 84. The varsity team was led by Jaxon Stoffel with a 97. Mariella Dreiling was the top female gun at 87.

Maier placed second junior varsity female scores. Stoffel tied for 11th in the varsity male high gun scores.

Area shooters that finished in the top three included&nbsp;Trego's Quintin Walt, who shot a perfect 100 and was the varsity male champion and was the overall state champion. Second, third and fourth place each missed just one shot for a 99.

Trego's Karlie Long finished third in the female novice division with a 79. Denton Pfannenstiel of LaCrosse was third in the male novice division on an 80 score. Sarah Clements of Trego shot 86 and was third in the female junior varsity division.&nbsp;

special legislative session to once again, take up tax policy, after the
governor vetoed prior attempts to reach an agreement on a tax-cutting deal, but
a deal announced late last week could signal a quick session.Lawmakers in Kansas will return Tuesday, June 18 for the
special session. The special session comes after Democratic Governor Laura
Kelly vetoed three prior tax plans.Her final veto came in May after lawmakers reached an
agreement in the final hours of the legislative session. In a statement Kelly said the legislature, “played political
games with reckless tax policies,” when it did not follow her recommendations.The measure passed both the house and the senate with
overwhelming bipartisan support.Hays Representative Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, 111th
District, is a member of the House Taxation Committee is scheduled to be back
in Topeka Monday to begin work ahead of the special session. Wasinger, like many Republican lawmakers expressed
frustration with the need for a special session. “In the last set of vetoes, she vetoed her own tax plans and
she knew if she vetoed the last one, she was going to cost Kansas even more
money to come back (for a special session),” Wasinger said. “I just sometimes think
that political people do not use good common sense and they don’t think about
the people they are affecting when they do things like this.”Rep. Ken Rahjes, R-Agra, 110th district also voiced his
disappointment with the need for a special session that is expected to cost
taxpayers approximately $84,000 per day.“I think it was avoidable. It's disappointing that we have
to do this,” Rahjes said. “The legislature, in a bipartisan fashion, had
something and the governor decided to play games and so here we are.”Late Thursday Kelly announced that she and Republican
leadership in the legislature had reached an agreement on a plan before
Tuesday’ session. Kelly said in a statement, “Legislative leadership and I
have come to a consensus on a tax relief package that will be presented to the

Dan Hawkins of Wichita said in a joint statement, “It simplifies the tax code
into two brackets, lowers rates, includes substantial exemptions to help
lower-income Kansans, reduces statewide property taxes and repeals the state
tax on Social Security.”Both the house and senate must still approve the latest tax
measure before it can go to the governor. Kelly has said she would sign the
latest bill.Rahjes said he believes it important to get something of
substance done because the stat does currently have a surplus and said high
inflation and other economic factors continue to weigh on Kansans.“A week ago, Caterpillar said they're going to be really
shuttering their facility in Wamego and Wamego is one of the bright spots in
the state of Kansas, that people continue to grow,” Rahjes said. “But 400 jobs
in that in that area, is tremendous.”Rahjes said he also planned to be in Topeka Monday and has
volunteered to be on the taxation committee now that there is an opening.He added, “To worry about these other things and playing
games to try to gain a seat or two in the legislature, that is not what Kansans
want. Kansas, is used to being pragmatic, and getting solutions that are good
for Kansans.”Wasinger said she is focused on easing the tax burden on
many groups of Kansans. “I want to give tax relief to Kansans,” Wasinger said. “I
want to stop taxing our seniors, so they leave the state and take their money
other places, I want them to stay in Kansas, I want them to have the same tax
advantages that other states around us have done.”Wasinger added, “I want our veterans, particularly our
disabled veterans to have some tax relief, so they can live in their homes without
concern. There's so much we need to do for our taxpayers, that is just not
getting done.”Rahjes said he believes that many lawmakers agree with
Wasinger and himself on the need for relief for seniors and veterans but they
also expressed the need top find a way to give taxpayers property tax relief.“People are always saying, Ken we need property tax relief
on our homes and for everything else, especially knowing that there's a surplus
there that can be used for that relief,” Rahles said. “So that to me is the
priority.”According to reports from the Associate Press, the deal
announced last week would save Kansas taxpayers $1.2 billion over the next
three years.It would also move Kansas to a two income tax rate system
and cut property taxes by at least $230 million more over the next three years.
