The Counseling Connection offers affordable same-day therapy for mental health challenges in Hays, supported by student interns.

Counseling Connection, established in 2021, is a mental health service provider in Hays, 2703 Hall St., Suite 13.

The clinic's owners are three licensed therapists, Deanna Rupp, Tess Bennett, and Michelle Fairbank, who said providing affordable care for those in need is important.

"Depression and anxiety are most common," Fairbank said. "Sometimes you need a little help when you're going through life challenges."

Walk-in sessions are available to anyone from 3 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays during the Fort Hays State University academic year.

The one-hour sessions are made possible through FHSU's counseling department and clinical social work program, with student interns providing services under supervision.

Fairbank said incorporating interns allows clients to access counseling more quickly, avoiding long wait times.

"The benefit of having interns available is sometimes when somebody asks for help, they want it right then and there," she said. "They wait two weeks to a month, and it's resolved itself."

Counseling Connection provides support for mental health challenges such as grief and loss, work-related stress, family dynamics, divorce and adjusting to a new community.

The $10 fee helps cover basic expenses like utilities and office supplies. Counseling Connection provides waivers funded by the Women Who Lead program for those unable to pay.

Counseling Connection provides telehealth sessions as an alternative for clients in rural areas who find traveling for in-person support challenging.

Fairbamk said the partnership between Counseling Connection and FHSU provides Hays with much-needed services while offering interns experience and training before entering the workforce.

"The interns are studying at the master's level," Fairbank said. "As soon as they graduate, they will apply for the license and become licensed therapists."

Counseling Connection will bring on two graduating interns as full-time therapists in May.

Counseling Connection interns are not employees but earn college credit while supporting individuals without health insurance, those with high deductibles, other students and minors accompanied by a parent.

Fairbank said many mental health clinics now have waiting lists, attributing this trend to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Mental health should be just as important as taking care of our physical health because it's all related and connected," she said.

The clinic is also considering offering group therapy for anxiety and depression if there is sufficient need or interest.

The Counseling Connection is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

A long-time campus tradition is coming up to celebrate the holiday season at&nbsp;Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;President Mason will kick this event off, followed by multiple speakers including this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, prior to the lighting of the tree.

The holiday tree-lighting ceremony will be in front of Sheridan Hall. The event&nbsp;is&nbsp;open to the public&nbsp;and will begin at&nbsp;5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. &nbsp;

A variety of activities will follow the tree lighting, including creating Christmas ornaments and mini-wreaths, carriage rides beginning at 5:30, and photos with Santa Claus. Visit Santa’s workshop to write letters to Santa, play games, and make Christmas crafts.&nbsp;

The event is sponsored by several FHSU offices: the Office of Student Engagement, the Office of the President, and International Student Services.&nbsp;

has officially opened sponsorship opportunities for the 2025 Wild West
Festival, scheduled for July 2–July 5, 2025, offering local businesses
and organizations the chance to support one of the region’s most beloved
events.

This annual festival brings
affordable, high-quality family entertainment to the citizens of Hays, Ellis
County, and the surrounding communities.

Julie Edgeman, newly elected
president of the Wild West Festival Committee, emphasized sponsors and
volunteers' critical role in the event's success.

“Our sponsors and volunteers are
the foundation of the Wild West Festival,” Edgeman said. “Their dedication

 Wild West Festival announces sponsorship opportunities and new leadership for 2025

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling had a strong showing at its home tournament on Sunday (Dec. 1) in the second annual FHSU Bob Smith Women's Open.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/isabella-cross/8277">Isabella Cross</a>&nbsp;(110),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lindsey-lopez/8284">Lindsey Lopez</a>&nbsp;(117),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lexie-lopez/8283">Lexie Lopez</a>&nbsp;(124),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/jamie-laswell/8282">Jamie Laswell</a>&nbsp;(131),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>&nbsp;(138), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/hailey-conley/8276">Hailey Conley</a>&nbsp;(207) of Fort Hays State all won their respective classes, while 20 Tigers placed overall.

The Tigers had 10 finalists in the tournament spread over eight of the 10 classes. FHSU had teammates face off in the finals at 131 (Laswell and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/amanda-jaeger/8280">Amanda Jaeger</a>) and 207 (Conley and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/grace-johns/8281">Grace Johns</a>). The Tigers had 19 of their 20 placers reach the championship semifinals.

At 110, Cross recorded four-straight tech falls to win her class. Three of those were by shutout scores of 10-0, including the semifinal and final. She yielded only two points on the day in her quarterfinal match that had a 12-2 result. She defeated Rylee Balcazar of Chadron State in the final.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lindsey-lopez/8284">Lindsey Lopez</a>&nbsp;recorded a tech fall, a fall, and a pair of decisions to win at 117. The tech fall and one of her decisions were shutouts, but her championship match was a thriller as she scored two points in the waning seconds to flip a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win over Jaia Ashley of Schreiner University.

At 124, No. 10 ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lexie-lopez/8283">Lexie Lopez</a>&nbsp;posted a 4-0 day with three-straight tech falls and then a fall in the championship match. Two of her tech falls were 10-0 shutouts, while the other was a 13-2 spread. She pinned Kira Bufford of Schreiner in the final in 1:37.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/jamie-laswell/8282">Jamie Laswell</a>&nbsp;did not yield a point all day in her 4-0 performance to win at 131. She posted a 27-second fall in her first match, then scored 10-0 tech falls in her final three matches of the day. Her championship match was against teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/amanda-jaeger/8280">Amanda Jaeger</a>, who had a similar result path on her way to the final with a fall and a pair of shutout tech falls before meeting Laswell in the final.

At 138,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>&nbsp;had three-straight shutout wins en route to the final. Her first two were tech falls by scores of 12-0 and 11-0 and then she had an 8-0 decision in the semifinal. Moore avenged a loss to Corrie Williams of Adams State from the dual the night before in the final. Moore won the championship on criteria in a 2-2 tie.

At 207,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/hailey-conley/8276">Hailey Conley</a>&nbsp;went 3-0 to claim the title of her class. She recorded a pair of falls to reach the final and then took a 7-1 decision in the final over teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/grace-johns/8281">Grace Johns</a>, who also had a pair of falls to reach the final before running into Conley.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/arianna-ortiz/8214">Arianna Ortiz</a>&nbsp;(103) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/isabella-renfro/8286">Isabella Renfro</a>&nbsp;(180) also notched second-place finishes for the Tigers. Ortiz had a tech fall and fall to reach the final, where she lost by fall to Odelia Lopez of Schreiner. Renfro blitzed through her first three opponents of the day with a pair of fast falls and a shutout tech fall before losing by fall to Nina Sandoval of Minot State.

Aside from the 10 top-two placing Tigers, FHSU had four third-place finishers, three fourth-place finishers, two fifth finishers, and one sixth-place finisher. Three little girls circled Kelly Groff on Wednesday, eagerly coloring Thanksgiving turkeys.

She spoke to them calmly with love and patience as they asked questions and showed off their multi-color squiggles.

For 24 years, Groff has cared for children in Hays. She has started caring for her three daughters, and now her in-home child care includes two of her grandchildren.

Groff, 43, of Hays was nominated as the November Child Care Champion by&nbsp;Michelle Wiesner.

"She has been a loving and caring provider for over 20 years,"&nbsp;Wiesner said. "She loves every child she has cared for, loves finding new crafts and creating new experiences for the kids. She loves what she does."

Kari Groff also nominated Kelly, saying, "She takes the extra step to make the kiddos feel at home."

Kelly Groff said, "I just love being with all of the kids. I don't know anything else, really. I love being with them. They love being with me."

Groff loves holidays and engages the children in craft activities that focus on giving back to the community.

The children and their families will give to the Toys for Tots program. The children also help Groff make cookies during the holidays. The plate of cookies is gifted to a family, who is encouraged also to make cookies and pass them on to someone else.

"We always say it's not what's under the tree, but who's around the tree," Groff said.

Groff said the children and families look forward to all of their giving experiences.

She talks with the children about what they are thankful for every morning through November.

"My philosophy is to be kind and humble," she said.

The Groffs love Halloween, and not only do the children who are currently in her child care come trick or treating, but so do children who she has cared for in the past.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the family's 13-foot skeleton still loomed in the yard across from blow-up Christmas decorations already greeting the kids for the next holiday.

Groff said she stays close to many of the children in her child care in the past, some of whom are now teenagers or even in college.

"It's so great to see how well they are doing in life," she said.

When the weather is nicer, Groff likes to take the children for walks and allows them to play outside.

"Every child needs to be outside," she said. "That is what I preach the most is every child needs fresh air. Every child needs to burn energy."

Groff said one of the most challenging aspects of her job is raising the children from babies and then letting them go when they start school.

"You raise them for four years, and then they're gone," she said.

She said she has also seen challenges in the increasing number of regulations in-home child care providers face and decreasing demand for in-home child care as more child care centers open in the area.

Groff said patience is the key for anyone wanting to enter the child care profession. She said each child is different, and you never know what you're going to get.

"For me, it just comes naturally," she said. " I have always loved kids. I have always loved being around kids. I've always loved doing activities with kids. You have to have the knack for it, I guess.

"It definitely takes time and patience, and it's a learning experience."

The Chamber in Hays, Kansas, announces new health insurance option for 2025

Throughout 2024 parts of Kansas have been in abnormally dry or drought conditions. Some places, like those that use Cheney Reservoir west of Wichita as a water source, have even had water conservation restrictions in place for several months.

Changes in rainfall have been commonplace for the past few years. This rainfall is distributed unevenly across the state. Some places are going from very dry to getting the expected monthly rain total in a single day. These changes don’t necessarily show up in long-term averages but have a significant effect on agricultural production and infrastructure-disruptive flooding.

The historic trend of widespread droughts can also lead to increased food prices and according to research from Harvard University, such droughts are likely to continue into the future.

These trends prompted the Docking Institute at Fort Hays State University to add water conservation questions to their annual Kansas Speaks public opinion survey this year.

The survey asked respondents whether local and state governments across the state were addressing water conservation efforts satisfactorily.

33.4% of respondents felt that their local government was not doing enough for water conservation in their part of Kansas. Nearly 40% felt it was doing the right amount, and only 2.4% felt it was doing too much.

Nearly 37% of respondents felt the state government was not doing enough, nearly 34% felt it was doing the right amount, and only 3.2% said it was doing too much.

Respondents were nearly evenly split on whether or not voluntary action by individuals and businesses (33.6%) is sufficient for improving water conservation efforts across the state or whether local governments should pass new laws (35.7%). Similar results appeared for voluntary action by individuals and businesses (33.5%) versus new laws from the state government (34.1%).

About 30% of respondents had no opinion for both questions.

Nearly a majority (49.6%) of Kansans report being very or moderately concerned that the state might be running out of water. An additional 27.7% report being slightly concerned.

Kansas lawmakers face a pivotal choice about the future of water conservation in the state.

The data from the Kansas Speaks survey reflects a growing public awareness of the challenges posed by shifting rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and unequal water availability. With nearly half of Kansans expressing significant concern about the state’s water resources, it’s clear that inaction is not an option.

The question now is whether state and local leaders will take proactive steps to address these concerns through targeted policies and investments or leave the responsibility to voluntary efforts by individuals and businesses.

As extreme weather events and historic drought trends continue to strain Kansas's water systems, the decisions made today will determine whether the state can secure its water future and support its agricultural backbone for generations to come.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Public opinion signals urgency for Kansas water conservation

EMPORIA - Hays High took the field in their first ever football championship on Saturday night. The Indians faced the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints in Emporia at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.

The Saints never trailed in a 35-13 victory over Hays.

The Indians' opponents in 2024 had a collective record of 100-38.

Aquinas(13-0) scored on plays of 41, 23 and 36 yards in the first half to build a 21-0 lead. Hays(8-5) got into the Saints' territory twice but couldn't keep their drive going. Hays punted on four of their five drives in the first half and lost the ball on downs on the other.

Hays took the opening drive of the game as far as the 30 yard line of Aquinas. The Indians lost 13 yards on the next play to set up an eventual punt. Aquinas punted on their first drive but Hays gave the ball back on a punt three plays later.

A short punt set up the Saints at the Hays 41 yard line and on the first play of the drive Elzie Slaughter found Brett Yankovich for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

It was the first of three straight possessions that Aquinas scored. It looked like the Indians stuffed a third down and six play but Calin Arndt broke free of the tackle and gained 45 yards. He scored two plays later on a 23 yard run pushing the advantage to 14-0.

Slaughter completed the trifecta of touchdowns with a 36 yard run after the Indians turned the ball over on downs on a 4th and 2 play. The Saints nearly scored before half but a pass was broken up near the end zone as time expired leaving Aquinas with a 21-0 lead in the locker room.

The Indians scored the first points of the second half. Neither team scored in the third quarter as the teams traded punts. An early fourth quarter punt was blocked by Hays. One play later Ian McGuire found Holden Lind wide open for a 25 yard yard scoring pass. Carson Moore nailed the point after for a 21-7 score with 11:08 left in the game.

The Indians forced a fumble on the next drive deep in their own territory. However, Hays couldn't move the ball and turned the ball over on an interception. Aquinas scored on their next two possession, establishing a 35-14 lead with 3:42 remaining.

The Indians took their final possession 76 yards on ten plays and scored as the final seconds dripped off the clock. McGuire found Johnny Cano for his 41 reception of the season, a 17 yard touchdown. The clocked had expired leaving the final score at 35-13.

Hays ran the ball for 110 yards, 40 more than the Saints defense gave up on average. The Indians totaled 190 in the game. Aquinas ran for 289 yards and threw for 83 more.

GOLDEN, Colo. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team improved to 7-0 after holding on to defeat Colorado School of Mines on Saturday (Nov. 30), 59-46. The Tigers never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 17 after holding the Orediggers to a season-low shooting percentage of 26.6 percent (17-of-64).

The teams traded baskets early on before a 7-0 run helped the Tigers build a 16-7 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/8329">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;opened the run with back-to-back buckets before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ellie-stearns/8333">Ellie Stearns</a>&nbsp;buried a corner 3-pointer, prompting a Mines timeout.

Fort Hays State led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter before FHSU scored the first eight points to stretch the lead to 14, 26-12.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/katie-wagner-degarmo/8334">Katie Wagner DeGarmo</a>&nbsp;scored on the Tigers' first possession before Stearns knocked down two more triples. Both teams struggled to score over the final six minutes of the first half, with Mines outscoring FHSU 6-2 the rest of the way to close within 10 by the break, 28-18.

The Orediggers closed within seven early in the second half before a 10-point Tiger run pushed the lead to a game-high 17, 40-23.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/talexa-weeter/8335">Talexa Weeter</a>&nbsp;opened the scoring with a traditional 3-point play and then wrapped up the run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Mines closed the gap to 11 by the end of the third stanza, 44-33, before another Stearns triple helped FHSU score the first five points of the fourth quarter to go back up 16. The home team tried to make a late rally, closing within nine with 70 seconds left before DeGarmo finished things off with a pair of baskets in the final minute.

DeGarmo led all scorers with 19 points, matching her season high, while also leading the team with eight rebounds and matching her career high with four blocks. Stearns netted a season-high 14 points thanks to four 3-pointers, the most triples made in a game by a Tiger this season. Weeter scored in double figures for the fifth game in a row, contributing 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Fort Hays State hit 37.9 percent from the floor (22-of-58) and knocked down 6-of-19 from behind the arc (31.6 percent). The Tigers scored 15 points off 15 Mines turnovers and outscored the Orediggers in the paint, 30-24.

The Tigers will return to Hays next weekend to open conference play when they host Central Missouri on Thursday (Dec. 5, 5:30 p.m.) and Washburn on Saturday (Dec. 7, 2 p.m.).&nbsp;&nbsp;

championship game, with a perfect 12-0 record against opponents. However, the
Axtell Eagles, also undefeated, pounced on Victoria, winning 50-0.

At the start of the game, the Knights were able to move the
ball offensively, earning two first downs before punting the ball away. Both
Axtell and Victoria started cold offensively. 

But at the 3:18 mark in the first quarter, the Eagles struck
paydirt with a twenty-two-yard touchdown from KU verbal commit Brandon
Schmelzle. After the kickoff, the first play of the Knights' offensive drive,
the pass was deflected and intercepted, giving the Eagles a 14-0 lead. 

In the second, both teams could not move the ball much, but
Axtell scored at the 4:52 mark to make it 30-0 before halftime. 

After halftime, the Knights' offense had opportunities, but
they were squandered by Axtell's suffocating defense, which did not allow more
than ten first downs the entire game.

The Eagles tacked on fourteen more points from Eli
Broxterman and Schmelzle in the third. 

During the fourth quarter, the Knights stopped a crucial
two-point conversion that would have ended the game sooner. After the
second-to-last scoring drive, Axtell led the Knights 44-0. 

On the game's final play, the Eagles used a double counter
flee-flicker to throw it to the near sideline to score the mercy rule
touchdown. 

Axtell claimed its fourth straight title in school history,
while mercy rules in the last three state championship games to Thunder Ridge,
South Central, and Victoria. 

Axtell’s winning streak continues at 52 straight wins. The
program's seniors completed their high school careers perfectly, with no losses.
