COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A Black student group at a flagship Missouri university that was roiled by protests over race nearly a decade ago said it was forced to rename an upcoming barbecue the Welcome Black and Gold BBQ instead of the Welcome Black BBQ.

The Legion of Black Collegians at the University of Missouri said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C-u76Wux2RP/">post</a>&nbsp;on Instagram that it spent months fighting the decision and was “heartbroken.” But the university defended the change in a statement, saying the modification was made to reflect that the campus is “welcoming to all.”

“In striving for an inclusive university, we must not exclude (or give impressions that we are excluding) individuals with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives,” university spokesperson Christopher Ave said in the statement.

The Legion of Black Collegians started in 1968 after the song “Dixie” was played at a football game while students waved a Confederate flag, the group explained on its website. “Dixie” celebrates life in the old South and originated in blackface minstrel shows. Critics have said the term is racially insensitive.

The group describes itself as “the only Black Student Government in the Nation.” It said all other schools have a Black Student Union or a Black Student Alliance.

The group said in the Instagram post that the barbecue is a staple for incoming and returning Black students. At one point it considered canceling the event, but now is encouraging members to attend on Friday and resist "any further changes to our fundamental programming.”

“We are looking into all avenues to NEVER allow this to happen again. If it does, rest assured the Legion will have nothing to do with it," the post said. “The erasure of the names and visibility of our events will continue to erode our presence on this campus, and we plan to do everything we can to divest from that.”

The name-change dustup comes after massive protests erupted in 2015 on the Columbia campus over the administration’s handling of racial slurs and other racist acts. More than 30 Black football team members said they wouldn’t play until the university’s president was removed and one student went on a hunger strike.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence officials said Monday they were confident that Iran was responsible for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fbi-trump-iran-hack-campaign-02a44ea734c8ee92c4d3a576af7a79fe">hack of Donald Trump's presidential campaign</a>, casting the cyber intrusion as part of a brazen and broader effort by Tehran to interfere in American politics and potentially shape the outcome of the election.

The assessment from the FBI and other federal agencies was the first time the U.S. government has assigned blame for hacks that have raised anew the threat of foreign election interference. The hacking also underscored how Iran, in addition to more sophisticated adversaries like Russia and China, remains a top concern to U.S. officials tasked with protecting democratic processes.

Besides breaching the Trump campaign, officials also believe that Iran tried to hack into the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris.

The hacking and similar activities, federal officials said, reflect Iran's determination to “complicate the ability of any U.S. administration to pursue a foreign policy at odds" with its own interests. The goal is to sow discord, weaken faith in democratic institutions and influence the outcome of elections that Iran perceives to be “particularly consequential in terms of the impact they could have on its national security interests," officials said.

“We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, specifically involving influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting Presidential campaigns,” said the statement released by the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations denied the hacks, saying that Iran had neither the motive nor intention to interfere with the election, and challenged the U.S. to provide evidence.

The statement was released at a time of significant tensions between Washington and Tehran as the U.S. hopes to halt or limit a threatened threatened retaliatory strike on Israel over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-hamas-israel-30968a7acb31cd8b259de9650014b779">the assassination of Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh</a>. An Israeli strike last month in southern Beirut&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-lebanon-strike-beirut-52c2a1711e274859b60daf8d2db3e0e2">killed Hezbollah’s top commander</a>, but while Tehran and Iran-backed Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate, they have not yet launched strikes as diplomatic endeavors and Gaza cease-fire talks continue in Qatar.

But it said the intelligence community was confident “the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the Presidential campaigns of both political parties.”

At least three staffers in the Biden-Harris campaign were targeted with phishing emails, but investigators have uncovered no evidence the attempt was successful, The Associated Press reported last week.

“Such activity, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process. It is important to note that this approach is not new. Iran and Russia have employed these tactics not only in the United States during this and prior federal election cycles but also in other countries around the world,” the statement said.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-campaign-hacked-036ffd3ed07cf3fe9fb74d4958808b65">Trump campaign disclosed on Aug. 10</a>&nbsp;that it had been hacked and said Iranian actors had stolen and distributed sensitive internal documents. U.S. confirms Trump campaign claim it was breached by Iranian hackers

ELLSWORTH COUNTY —Kansas Highway Patrol reports more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit, despite a statewide campaign to crack down on excessive speeding.

On Monday, KHP Lt. Brown in Ellsworth County stopped a vehicle on I-70 westbound going 106 mph in a 75 mph zone, according to a social media report.

In addition to speeding, the driver was not traveling in the right lane like they should. Speeding and not following lane rules puts everyone in danger.&nbsp; The ticket was for $393.00.

KHP: Driver ticketed for traveling 106mph on I-70

The Brass Rail has been transformed from a historic downtown Hays bar to a vibrant salon with a wide range of services.

The salon, 114 E. 11th St., is the former location of the Brass Rail bar, a significant part of Hays' history for more than 70 years.

Transformed into a salon by owner Courtney Clayton, she looks to honor its history while pursuing her dream of creating an environment for people with her interests.

"That's the motivation behind this. I wanted to create a space for people like me."

Clayton teaches at Hays Academy of Hair Design and said her new establishment is perfect for customers who enjoy a "funky, West Coast and trendy hip-hop vibe."

With a team that includes herself, two full-time nail technicians, a cosmetologist and more joining in September, the salon offers pedicures, manicures, nail repairs, haircuts and spa treatments.

"What I specialize in is eyelash extensions, body waxing, things that make you feel more body positive," Clayton said.

The salon's basement features three separate treatment rooms for lashes, facials, and hair removal in a more private environment.

Clayton said its welcoming environment and inviting atmosphere set her salon apart from others in Hays.

After purchasing the former bar, the Hays Historical Society acquired most of the older decorations, including tables, booths, chairs and wall art.

Recognizing its history and strong connection to the people of Hays, Clayton kept the Brass Rail's name, sign and selected interior decorations to honor its legacy.

"I tried to keep as much as I could that still fits into what I'm trying to create," she said. "I think of it as creating something new and vibrant out of something still here."

The Brass Rail bar first opened in downtown Hays in 1950 and was put up for sale in 2017. It continued operating until its lights flickered off for the last time in October.

The Brass Rail Salon celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 3.

Clayton was born in California and has lived in Kansas for about six years. She balances her responsibilities at Hays Academy, raising her 6-year-old daughter and managing the salon.

"We're just getting our feet in the water with the salon," she said. "I love teaching, and I don't see that going anywhere. This is something I'm very passionate about."

Clayton hopes to expand and grow the salon with innovative and exciting beauty techniques in the future.

The hair salon is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

 </figure>Clayton said its welcoming environment and inviting atmosphere set her salon apart from others in Hays.After purchasing the former bar, the Hays Historical Society acquired most of the older decorations, including tables, booths, chairs and wall art.Recognizing its history and strong connection to the people of Hays, Clayton kept the Brass Rail's name, sign and selected interior decorations to honor its legacy."I tried to keep as much as I could that still fits into what I'm trying to create," she said. The TMP-Marian football program began year number two under
head coach Grant Stephenson Monday with the first practice of the year.

Approximately 30 players joined Stephenson for the first practice
of the season, including three new seniors who joined the team for their final
year of high school.

The Monarchs finished 5-5 last season losing to Norton (18-6) in the second round of the 2A playoffs.&nbsp;

TMP travels to Larned on Aug. 30 for a jamboree and then
opens the season the following week on the road at Russell.

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — George Santos, the former New York congressman who spun lies into a brief political career, pleaded guilty Monday to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, acknowledging that he allowed his ambitions to cloud his judgment.

Santos, 36, is likely to spend at least six years in prison and owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution. His federal fraud case, which led to his expulsion from Congress, was just weeks away from going to trial.

“I betrayed the trust of my constituents and supporters. I deeply regret my conduct,” the New York Republican said, his voice trembling as he entered the plea in a Long Island courtroom.

Santos, 36, said he accepted responsibility for his crimes and intends to make amends. He faces more than six years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines and owes at least $370,000 in restitution.

Senior Federal Judge Joanna Seybert scheduled sentencing for Feb. 7.

Santos was indicted on felony charges that he stole from political donors, used campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses, lied to Congress about his wealth and collected unemployment benefits while actually working.

Santos was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-expulsion-vote-ethics-investigation-fd0f1524065883c6b2fe3e6f9afd84db">expelled from the U.S. House</a>&nbsp;after an ethics investigation found “overwhelming evidence” that he had broken the law and exploited his public position for his own profit.

The case&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-case-hearing-e28226562b4bd71327415ba8e4f65b50">has been set to go to trial</a>&nbsp;in early September. If that had happened, federal prosecutors said Monday that they were prepared to call some 40 witnesses, including members of Santos' campaign, employers and family members.

Santos was once touted as a rising political star after he flipped the suburban district that covers the affluent North Shore of Long Island and a slice of the New York City borough of Queens in 2022.

But his life story began unraveling even before he was sworn into office. At the time, reports emerged that he had lied about having a career at top Wall Street firms and a college degree along with other questions swirling about his biography.

New&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-district-of-columbia-congress-george-santos-campaign-finance-f58dc7242796327d81738559885e9078">questions then emerged</a>&nbsp;about his campaign funds.

He was first indicted on federal charges in May 2023, but refused to resign from office.

Santos had previously maintained his innocence, though he said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-trial-plea-new-york-6ecf3896ae1de466bef442dc0409fc15">in an interview</a>&nbsp;in December that a plea deal with prosecutors was “not off the table.”

Asked if he was afraid of going to prison, he told CBS 2 at the time: “I think everybody should be afraid of going to jail, it’s not a pretty place and uh, I definitely want to work very hard to avoid that as best as possible.”

Separately Monday, in Manhattan federal court, Judge Denise Cote tossed out&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-jimmy-kimmel-copyright-lawsuit-41e1c2951945e11c069a41f9ea62281d">a lawsuit in which Santos claimed</a>&nbsp;that late-night host&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jimmy-kimmel">Jimmy Kimmel</a>, ABC and Disney committed copyright infringement and unjustly enriched themselves at his expense by using videos he made&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-cameo-video-7aa0cf8ed6303a1e18da0b7a108e341c">on the Cameo app</a>&nbsp;for a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” segment. The judge said it was clear that Kimmel used the clips, which were also posted to YouTube, for the purposes of criticism and commentary, which is fair use.

Santos had begun selling personalized videos on Cameo in December shortly after his ouster from Congress. He subsequently launched,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-congress-campaign-a4c4cc2ea7cb52a13ec9f8dfc5ede86c">then quickly abandoned</a>, a longshot bid to return to Congress as an independent earlier this year.

In&nbsp;<a href="https://wabcradio.com/show/cindy-adams/">a radio interview</a>&nbsp;that aired Sunday, Santos said he has taken comfort in being a “somewhat private civilian” again.

“I really don’t miss the rubber chicken dinners and the rah-rah-rah parties and fundraisers," he said of his former life.

With his criminal trial looming, he had said in the WABC interview that he was “terrified.”

“This is not absolutely an easy process to go through. It really hurts and it really messes with your psychological health,” he told host Cindy Adams.

As the trial date neared in recent weeks, Santos&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-case-charges-8f869a6afbd97be3bed20db0be523809">had sought</a>&nbsp;to have a partially anonymous jury, with his lawyers arguing in court papers that "the mere risk of public ridicule could influence the individual jurors ability to decide Santos’ case solely on the facts and law as presented in Court.”

He also wanted potential jurors to fill out a written questionnaire gauging their opinions of him. His lawyers argued the survey was needed because “for all intents and purposes, Santos has already been found guilty in the court of public opinion.”

Judge Joanna Seybert agreed to keep jurors’ identities public but said no to the questionnaire.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, had been seeking to admit as evidence some of the financial falsehoods Santos told during his campaign, including that he’d worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs and that he had operated a family-run firm with approximately $80 million in assets,

Disgraced former Congressman offers apology, reaches plea deal

Moving forward with various funding mechanisms for proposed new housing developments and business expansions was the focus of Thursday's Hay City Commission meeting.

The east Hays Tallgrass Housing Development Phases 1-3 was financed with a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District.

The Heart of America Development Corporation footed the development cost upfront and is receiving the revenues from the RHID to recoup part of its cost. Heart of America has requested to be “cashed out” of the development to pursue more Phase 4 housing to the north.

 Commissioners discussed issuing general obligation bonds and utilizing the RHID revenue to pay those bonds. The money generated by the bonds would be given to Heart of America as reimbursement for its previously incurred costs in the Tallgrass Development. Heart of America would then agree to use those revenues to create water, sewer and street infrastructure on the remainder of the property it owns.

The bonds would also be used to finance the new <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/292e6398-09de-4575-8f00-59772bbb0c0c">automated meter infrastructure for the water and wastewater system</a>.

The city must enact its first-ever home-rule ordinance to execute the process.

Also discussed was a resolution to set a Sept. 26 public hearing for establishing an RHID for the Depot Addition housing at 10th and Walnut in downtown Hays. The private developer is Hays resident Michael Graham.

The commission moved forward with two more resolutions to issue industrial revenue bonds for other downtown projects.

Local developer Adam Pray plans to rehabilitate the former bank building at 1108 Main Street. The Chestnut Suites project would consist of 24 to 26 short- and long-term rentable luxury rooms, targeting out-of-town visitors who want to stay downtown.

The second resolution would be for IRBs for&nbsp;Gella’s Diner and Liquid Bread Brewing Company.

 It wants to expand into the adjacent building to the east, which would be used for event space and Fort Hays Tech-North Central culinary classes.&nbsp;

An IRB issuance does not count against the city’s debt limit or affect its debt rating and does not require taxpayer commitment.

Commissioners spent considerable time discussing proposed fee increases at Hays Aquatic Park and Wilson Pool, along with hikes at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.

All three are considered quality-of-life&nbsp;amenities and are not expected to generate a profit for the city.

Hays Mayor Shaun Musil, however, wanted to raise prices higher than Jeff Boyle, parks director, recommended.

"From a businessman's perspective, you wouldn't let the gap between revenues and expenses be that wide," Musil said.

Ultimately, commissioners agreed to fee hikes at the golf course for 9-holes, 18-holes, single, couple and family memberships, with no changes in the junior membership, card shed rental or trails fee.

They also agreed to an increase in daily admission to the aquatic park and for a season pass. Daily admission to the neighborhood Wilson Pool will remain the same.

All agenda items will be voted on at the Sept. 22 city commission meeting.&nbsp;

 </figure>The east Hays Tallgrass Housing Development Phases 1-3 was financed with a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District.The Heart of America Development Corporation footed the development cost upfront and is receiving the revenues from the RHID to recoup part of its cost. Heart of America has requested to be “cashed out” of the development to pursue more Phase 4 housing to the north. Commissioners discussed issuing general obligation bonds and utilizing the RHID revenue to pay those bonds. The money generated by the bonds would be given to Heart of America as reimbursement for its previously incurred costs in the Tallgrass Development. Heart of America would then agree to use those revenues to create water, sewer and street infrastructure on the remainder of the property it owns.The bonds would also be used to finance the new <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/292e6398-09de-4575-8f00-59772bbb0c0c">automated meter infrastructure for the water and wastewater system</a>.The city must enact its first-ever home-rule ordinance to execute the process.<figure>

 </figure>Also discussed was a resolution to set a Sept. 26 public hearing for establishing an RHID for the Depot Addition housing at 10th and Walnut in downtown Hays. The private developer is Hays resident Michael Graham.The commission moved forward with two more resolutions to issue industrial revenue bonds for other downtown projects.<figure>

 </figure>Local developer Adam Pray plans to rehabilitate the former bank building at 1108 Main Street. The Chestnut Suites project would consist of 24 to 26 short- and long-term rentable luxury rooms, targeting out-of-town visitors who want to stay downtown.<figure>

 </figure>The second resolution would be for IRBs for&nbsp;Gella’s Diner and Liquid Bread Brewing Company. It wants to expand into the adjacent building to the east, which would be used for event space and Fort Hays Tech-North Central culinary classes.&nbsp;An IRB issuance does not count against the city’s debt limit or affect its debt rating and does not require taxpayer commitment.Commissioners spent considerable time discussing proposed fee increases at Hays Aquatic Park and Wilson Pool, along with hikes at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.All three are considered quality-of-life&nbsp;amenities and are not expected to generate a profit for the city.Hays Mayor Shaun Musil, however, wanted to raise prices higher than Jeff Boyle, parks director, recommended."From a businessman's perspective, you wouldn't let the gap between revenues and expenses be that wide," Musil said.Ultimately, commissioners agreed to fee hikes at the golf course for 9-holes, 18-holes, single, couple and family memberships, with no changes in the junior membership, card shed rental or trails fee.The recommended new fees would be:Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course 9-Hole — $17 18-Hole Weekday — $23 18-Hole Weekend — $26 Annual Single Membership — $575 Annual Couple Membership — $720 Annual Family Membership — $740Hays Aquatic Park Season Pass — $53They also agreed to an increase in daily admission to the aquatic park and for a season pass. Casey McAvoy is asking to reduce the west side yard setback by four ft. from the required five ft. to one ft. for the installation of a 10X12 ft. shed at 4108 Covenant Drive.

Another Hays resident, Leslie Smith wants to reduce the west side yard setback by three ft. from the required seven ft. to four ft. for the extension of carport at 407 E. 17th St.&nbsp; 

The commission will consider setting a public hearing date after hearing the request.

Hays Area Planning Commission meets Monday afternoon 

SUMNER COUNTY —Law enforcement across Kansas continue to see&nbsp; drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit, despite a statewide campaign to crack down on excessive speeding.

On Friday, KHP Lt. Hammond stopped a couple of motorists for driving over 100mph on the Kansas Turnpike within a couple hours, according to a social media report.

On Sunday, KHP Trooper J. Davis issued a citation in Ottawa County, on U.S. 81 at milepost 178 northbound. The driver was clocked at 104 mph, far exceeding the 70 mph speed limit. For those wondering, a ticket like this totals $363 in fines.

Report aggressive drivers on the highways to *47 or *582 on the Kansas Turnpike.

Driver clocked traveling 102mph on the Kansas Turnpike

While savoring the aroma of fresh coffee, Breathe Coffee House in Hays offers a hub for conversations and morning treats.

The building, 703 B Main St., underwent transformations before owner Patrick McGinnis remodeled it into a coffee shop in 2016.

McGinnis has experience in ministry, restaurants, community development, mental health, and counseling, and he says his coffee house is a blend of all these fields.

"When I talk about my calling or what I'm supposed to do, I'm getting to do everything I wanted to do here," he said.

The building was the Brunswick Hotel in the early 1900s before being converted into an antique shop. Its legacy is still felt in the coffee shop today.

The structure underwent remodeling after a fire damaged the south side, leading to an extension on the north side. This created space for the hotel lobby and eventually became the entrance of the coffee shop.

The staircase that now leads to the coffee shop's basement once extended to the second floor, accommodating travelers passing through Hays.

McGinnis opened his coffee shop in 2016 after extensive rebuilding, utilizing elements from the building's history, such as the original doors.

"Some of them are two feet wide and very narrow," he said. "All of our menus on the wall are doors that came from the original Brunswick Hotel."

The shop's entrance features an original brick wall, while the basement has a limestone wall and charred wood, remnants of a long-ago fire.

The building now offers a variety of delicious morning snacks and drinks, including banana mocha smoothies, root beer lattes, pizza crepes, and Ethiopian and Guatemalan coffees.

"If you want to taste&nbsp;the difference between African coffee versus Central American coffee versus South American coffee, you can do that," McGinnis said.

You can enjoy all of these in a welcoming and social environment on either the main floor or the lower level, surrounded by positive messages to kickstart your morning.

The coffee shop has interactive walls filled with positivity, such as a prayer wall, a pay-it-forward wall, and an art and message wall where patrons voluntarily started hanging their pieces.

"The main goal is everybody who walks through the door feels comfortable and connected," McGinnis said.&nbsp;

McGinnis serves as a mental health counselor at the Health and Wellness Center at Fort Hays State University, creating a partnership with the school to support students in addressing mental health.

As the school semester kicks off, students can look forward to "Can We Just Talk" sessions every Thursday at 7 p.m. starting this week. These sessions are also open to nonstudents.

The weekly meetings alternate between on-campus and the coffee shop, occasionally collaborating with various campus departments and organizations to tackle challenging topics.

"Those topics vary based on the needs each semester because I work with a leadership 310 class who coordinates that for me on what may be most pertinent to university," McGinnis said.

When you walk into Breathe Coffee House, you’ll often be greeted with a smile and have your order taken by a student, as most of the staff are students.

McGinnis was born and raised in Hays and attended Fort Hays. After spending some time away, he returned to Hays with his wife.

"We're committed to Hays, even though we never necessarily intended on being here," he said. "We really felt like it was where we were supposed to be, and it's where we raised our kids."

McGinnis is married to Penny McGinnis and has three children, two of whom work at Fort Hays, and three grandchildren.

McGinnis and his wife are Christian, and while their coffee house is connected to their faith, they always intend to create a place for everyone.

"The goal was never to try to create our own church," he said.

The shop offers a coffee club where you can make monthly donations and join others who share the vision of connecting the community.

Donors receive coupons to encourage visits to the coffee house for drinks and conversations and a personal mug for refills at the shop.

"You can build a community one cup of coffee at a time," McGinnis said.

The coffee shop is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.&nbsp;

Breathe Coffee House: A place of Hays history, community connections

The latest state child care regulations changes were released earlier this summer.

One of the most significant changes was to the children-to-provider ratios. Those ratio changes don't go into effect automatically. Providers have to apply for certification for the new child counts.

The <a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1130">Kansas Department of Health and Environment website</a>&nbsp;contains a complete list of the regulation changes.

The new regulations would allow providers to care for more children ages 1 to 5, depending on staffing.

The definition of an infant changed to a child younger than 1 instead of 18 months.

Surveys in Ellis County have shown that the greatest need is infant care. Providers are required to have more staff for infant care than older children.

Andrew Cutright, board member for the Hays Area Children's Center, said although the center would be allowed to have more children under the new rules, the center would need to have more square footage to account for more children. They do not have that space.

Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, said changing the square footage requirements would greatly help providers.

Kansas requires 35 square feet per child, and most states require 25 square feet per child, Wasinger said.

Watching videos on the new regulations counts toward child care providers' required hours for recertification.

Child care providers must also have a written policy on how they change diapers, which must be posted in the diaper changing area.

Tori Ruder, in-home child care provider, said the regulation would require her to post her diaper changing policy in her living room or move that area to another place in her home.

Regulations are also now requiring hands free trash cans and diaper pails as well as first aid kits.

Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, suggested the task force could seek grant funds to help providers pay for the first aid kits.

Dana Stanton, child care program director for the&nbsp;<a href="https://nwkeici.org/">Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center</a>, said some longtime providers are now required to take additional training to meet current training standards.

The task force also discussed the need to make parents more aware of the availability of state assistance for child care.

Only 12% of Kansas families who qualify for child care subsidies in Kansas use them.&nbsp;

A family of four making less than $6,966 a month could earn child care subsidies. Children must be younger than 13. Call&nbsp;<a href="tel:18883694777" target="_blank">1-888-369-4777</a>&nbsp;to learn more. The Department of Children and Families runs subsidies and applications can be picked up at any agency office.

"It makes me wonder if that is an awareness thing that the task force could be using out there," Cutright said. "Did you know that you could be eligible for these funds? Even though child care is expensive, here's an opportunity."

Stanton said not all providers accept the subsidies, but a good chunk of them do.

Ruder said being becoming a DCF provider is not difficult.

However, Curtright said the state has an initial delay in paying funds to child care providers. Centers can handle that cash flow issue, but that might be more difficult for in-home providers, he said.

Wasinger said, "How many providers are we talking to who, if they could take those dollars, would have more kids on their workload and wouldn't have to struggle to fill up their spots?"

The next task force meeting will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Hays Welcome Center, 2700 Vine.

Child care providers who need fingerprinting can have their fingerprints done for free at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Welcome Center or at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Rose Garden Baquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth St. Training will also be offered the evening of Nov. 14.

Those ratio changes don't go into effect automatically. Providers have to apply for certification for the new child counts.The <a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1130">Kansas Department of Health and Environment website</a>&nbsp;contains a complete list of the regulation changes.The new regulations would allow providers to care for more children ages 1 to 5, depending on staffing.The definition of an infant changed to a child younger than 1 instead of 18 months.Surveys in Ellis County have shown that the greatest need is infant care. Providers are required to have more staff for infant care than older children.Andrew Cutright, board member for the Hays Area Children's Center, said although the center would be allowed to have more children under the new rules, the center would need to have more square footage to account for more children. They do not have that space.Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, said changing the square footage requirements would greatly help providers.Kansas requires 35 square feet per child, and most states require 25 square feet per child, Wasinger said.Watching videos on the new regulations counts toward child care providers' required hours for recertification.Child care providers must also have a written policy on how they change diapers, which must be posted in the diaper changing area.Tori Ruder, in-home child care provider, said the regulation would require her to post her diaper changing policy in her living room or move that area to another place in her home.Regulations are also now requiring hands free trash cans and diaper pails as well as first aid kits.Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, suggested the task force could seek grant funds to help providers pay for the first aid kits.Dana Stanton, child care program director for the&nbsp;<a href="https://nwkeici.org/">Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center</a>, said some longtime providers are now required to take additional training to meet current training standards.The task force also discussed the need to make parents more aware of the availability of state assistance for child care.Only 12% of Kansas families who qualify for child care subsidies in Kansas use them.&nbsp;A family of four making less than $6,966 a month could earn child care subsidies. Children must be younger than 13. Call&nbsp;<a href="tel:18883694777" target="_blank">1-888-369-4777</a>&nbsp;to learn more. "Did you know that you could be eligible for these funds? Even though child care is expensive, here's an opportunity."Stanton said not all providers accept the subsidies, but a good chunk of them do.Ruder said being becoming a DCF provider is not difficult.However, Curtright said the state has an initial delay in paying funds to child care providers. Centers can handle that cash flow issue, but that might be more difficult for in-home providers, he said.Wasinger said, "How many providers are we talking to who, if they could take those dollars, would have more kids on their workload and wouldn't have to struggle to fill up their spots?"The next task force meeting will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Hays Welcome Center, 2700 Vine.Child care providers who need fingerprinting can have their fingerprints done for free at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Welcome Center or at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Rose Garden Baquet Hall, 2350 E. Reg. changes seek to open more child care slots but space may be obstacle

DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton isn't ready to name rookie quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-indianapolis-colts-preseason-6d7445a697ffefbb0e9848632ff14283">Bo Nix</a>&nbsp;his starter just yet. It sure seems it's just a matter of time, though.

“Well listen, he's played well. I'm not announcing any starting quarterback tonight," Payton said after Nix made another strong case for the gig when he led Denver to scores on both of his drives in his first NFL start, a 27-2 win over the Green Bay Packers' backups on Sunday night.

Nix, the former Oregon star and the sixth QB selected in the 2024 NFL draft, has now led Denver to scores on six of his seven drives in the preseason.

Nix threw a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1825333028182274306">2-yard touchdown pass to Tim Patrick</a>, whose trip to the end zone was his first in 974 days as he missed the last two seasons with leg injuries. Nix also had a 14-yard strike to Javonte Williams that was overturned on review as he was ruled just past the line of scrimmage when he threw.

Denver (2-0), which got touchdowns from all three QBs, settled for the first of Wil Lutz’s two field goals instead.

Asked if he feels he’s done enough to win the job, Nix said, “That’s not for me to decide.”

It’s for Payton to determine and he's not ready to reveal his pick, although he did heap plenty of praise on Nix.

“He had the one penalty which was right on the line. It was tough,” Payton said. “It was a pretty heads-up play. He did a good job at the line of scrimmage with some checks. You feel his comfort level as he continues to get used to the calls coming in. And you know, you kind of feel the poise when he's playing."

Nix finished 8 of 9 for 90 yards and a stellar 140.7 passer rating. Patrick caught four of his passes for 30 yards, none bigger than his TD, his first since Dec. 19, 2021.

"You lose the advantage that you get from the safety. It is what it is; that’s the rule. We’ll just have to play it that way.
