Fort Hays State hosts Pittsburg State for Senior Day at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. The matchup features two of the top four teams in the MIAA standings. FHSU enters at 17-8 overall and 10-6 in the MIAA, while PSU enters at 16-9 overall and 12-4 in the MIAA. Senior recognition for men's basketball will begin right after the conclusion of the women's game.

The Tigers have won two-straight entering Saturday, which includes a 70-59 win over Missouri Southern on Thursday night. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;(26) and Kyle Grill&nbsp;(20) each provided 20-point games for the Tigers as they held the Lions right on their nation's leading scoring defense average of 59 points per game. The Tigers are the only team in NCAA Division II allowing less than 60 points per game on average.

The Gorillas enter this contest on a 6-game winning streak. Their last loss was back on January 30 by five points to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. All four of Pittsburg State's conference losses this year have been by six points or less. The Gorillas average 78.5 points per game, but also yield an average of 74.5 per game. PSU is just 1-4 this season when being held to less than 70.

Pittsburg State won all three meetings with Fort Hays State last year. The Gorillas won by 12 on their home floor, by four in Hays, and then by 18 at the MIAA Tournament. Both FHSU and PSU were NCAA Tournament participants last year in the Central Regional, but both fell in the opening round. The last 12 meetings have nearly split evenly with the Tigers winning seven and the Gorillas winning five.

Kaleb Hammeke continues to lead the Tigers at 15.7 points and 4.0 assists per game. He is 48 points shy of the 2,000-point mark for his career as the Tigers now have three regular season games remaining. Hammeke averaged 29 points over his last two games with a season-high 32-point performance at Newman and then a 26-point effort in the most recent contest against Missouri Southern.

Shaun Riley&nbsp;leads the Tigers in rebounding at 6.3 per game, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kyle-grill/8223">Kyle Grill</a>&nbsp;is the only other Tiger besides Hammeke averaging double figures in scoring at 12 points per game.

Jordan Frison leads the Gorillas in scoring at 17.1 points per game and adds a team-best 6.3 assists per game. Avery Taggart (15.3) and R.J. Forney (11.7) also average double figures in scoring for the Gorillas.

The 7th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team hosts 5th-ranked Pittsburg State in a top 10 battle Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers improved to 23-2 overall and 14-2 in MIAA play with a 55-64 win over Missouri Southern on Thursday, while the Gorillas are now 24-2 on the year and 16-0 in league action thanks to an 81-74 road win over Nebraska-Kearney.

Fort Hays State will recognize six seniors 10 minutes before the game, including Kate DeGarmo, Kate Dilsaver, Megan Earney, Olivia Hollenbeck, Sasha Koenig and Bailey Wilborn. The group has combined to appear in 554 games at FHSU while winning 120 contests over the last five seasons.

Fort Hays State (10 straight wins) and Pittsburg State (15 straight wins) are two of 15 Division II schools that currently hold a double-digit winning streak.

The Tigers also opened the year with 12 consecutive victories, making this the third season in program history with multiple double-digit winning streaks. The current stretch is FHSU's 16th double-digit winning streak in team history.

Fans have been flocking to the Coliseum in droves this season, helping FHSU lead Division II in attendance with an average of 1,990 fans per home contest. That total would rank 89th in Division I and is more than 277 DI programs.

The Tigers reached 20 wins for the 14th season in a row this year, the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in Division II and tied for fifth best across all NCAA divisions. The next-best active stretch of 20-win seasons in the MIAA is three (MWSU, MSSU, PSU), while the next-best streak in DII is Drury with 11. Only four DI programs have longer active stretches of 20-win seasons, including UConn (32), Baylor (25), Stanford (23) and Florida Gulf Coast (21). Fort Hays State's run of 14-straight 20-win seasons is tied with Louisville, South Carolina and South Dakota State for fifth best in all NCAA women's basketball.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;distributed three assists in Thursday's win over the Lions, giving her 166 for the season to tie a 34-year-old program record set in 1990-91 by Kristi Leeper-Meis. The junior is second in Division II in total assists and fourth in assists per game, averaging 6.9 assists each night. She leads the MIAA in each category while ranking seventh in the conference with 1.75 steals per contest. A native of Huxley, Iowa, Loewe recently cracked the all-time top 10 list in assists at Fort Hays State with 321 career assists.

Dilsaver and Hollenbeck are each averaging 2.08 steals per night, tied for second-most in the conference. The Tigers as a team top the conference with 9.8 steals per outing.

Hollenbeck also ranks second in the league and fifth nationally with a shooting percentage of 62.4 percent while ranking fifth in the association with a team-best 16.7 points per game. The forward continues to climb the all-time charts at Fort Hays State, now ranking second in blocks with 213, fourth in points with 1,819, fourth in field goals with 687 and ninth in steals with 189. She needs 42 rebounds to crack the top 10 in that category as well.

Already the program's all-time leader in rebounds with 1,176, DeGarmo also ranks second in school history with 2,145 points, second with 805 field goals, fourth in assists with 380 and fifth in steals with 225.

Dilsaver scored in double figures for the 14th time this season on Thursday, totaling 10 points while finishing one rebound shy of her career-high with eight. She has now scored in double figures nine times in the last 12 games.

Fort Hays State is 36-30 all-time against Pittsburg State, including a 21-11 record at home. PSU holds a one-game winning streak in the series, but the Tigers have dominated of late, winning 11 of the last 14 meetings since 2017. The Tigers are 2-1 against the Gorillas under head coach Talia Kahrs, including a 1-0 record at home. At 16-14, Pittsburg State is one of two schools to hold a winning record over FHSU in regular season MIAA matchups (ESU). Fort Hays State leads 3-2 in games that reach overtime. The Tigers are 2-0 against the Gorillas on February 22, including a home win exactly one year ago.

Pittsburg State tops the MIAA standings at 24-2 overall and 16-0 in MIAA action. The Gorillas have won 15 in a row, the seventh-longest active winning streak in Division II. The Gorillas lead the MIAA with an average of 80.5 points per game, ninth-best in Division II. They hit a Division II-best 48.3 percent from the floor while ranking second in the country with a shooting percentage of 38.8 percent from behind the arc. Karenna Gerber leads the team in points and rebounds, ranking seventh in the MIAA with 15.7 points per night and fourth in the league with 8.3 boards per contest.

Whether you're a seasoned local food producer, just starting out, or simply curious about growing and selling local food, the Local Food Producer Workshop is for you! Join us on Friday, February 28 at the Hays Agricultural Research Center for a day full of learning, sharing, and connecting with others who care about local food and community.

The Kansas Local Food Systems program, administered by K-State Research and Extension, has joined with the Kansas Department of Agriculture to offer a series of workshops for local food producers. 

“One of the things we learned from a series of community roundtables we held last year is that there is a great need to support local food entrepreneurs, especially when it comes to navigating regulations, increasing their marketing skills, and reaching new markets for their products,” said Rebecca McMahon, administrator of the Kansas Local Food System program.

“These workshops are a great way to reach a range of farmers and small food businesses around the state that want to sell their products directly to consumers.”

Lindahl notes that the workshop also helps local food producers build a network of other food producers in Kansas.

“I believe that the direct-to-consumer market provides opportunities for farmers and ranchers to capture more value for their products, ultimately making more profitable operations for Kansas producers,” Lindahl said.

• Inspiring Local Stories – Learn from area producers like Bryttni Miller (Yucca Flats Cattle Co.) and Matt Bender (Harvest Hays) as they share their successes and challenges.

• A Delicious Local Lunch – Enjoy a meal prepared by Chef Austin Petz from Verdant Bistro, who will share how he incorporates locally grown food into his menu.

• Farm-to-School Opportunities – Discover ways to connect with schools and provide fresh, local food, with insights from Jay Harris, District Director and Horticulture Agent.

• Practical Sessions – Topics include marketing, food safety, sales tax regulations, and building strong community partnerships.

The workshop is designed to be informative, welcoming, and accessible to everyone – no matter your experience level. It’s a great way to learn something new, make connections, and feel more confident about growing and selling local food.

The Ellis County Health Department is introducing a new director with a strong background in public health.

Melissa Miller, a Tribune native, spent about 10 years in Denver before returning to rural Kansas. She launched her public health career as the office manager at the Greeley County Health Department.

"I was looking for a full-time job... I really thought it would be scheduling appointments and answering the phone. I had no idea that it would turn into a passion for public health," Miller said.&nbsp;

Starting Monday, Miller will bring her experience and dedication to the health department, focusing first on understanding Ellis County.

"My first priority is just to listen and to learn," Miller said.

Although Miller has some familiarity with Ellis County, she acknowledges that stepping into her new role comes with a learning curve, especially in identifying health challenges affecting residents.

Miller plans to build on existing initiatives and assess opportunities for improvement or expansion rather than making immediate changes.

One of Miller's long-term goals is to enhance public awareness of public health's impact on prevention, screenings, maternal health and community support programs.

"I really feel like living a well-rounded life takes a village. And so people helping people is very important to me," Miller said.&nbsp;

By evaluating community needs and strengthening partnerships with local organizations, she aims to introduce effective health strategies to Ellis County.

"Accessibility starts with awareness. If people don't know what services are available to them, they can't take advantage of them," she said.

Growing up on a farm in Tribune, Miller developed a deep appreciation for the vital role public health plays in small communities.

She recalls classic public health campaigns from her childhood, like "Don't be a Litterbug" and "Smokey Bear," which have remained influential across generations, including her children.

"Public health isn't just for a certain demographic of people. It's not limited to people of certain ages or different income levels or backgrounds. It really just benefits society as a whole," Miller said.&nbsp;

BELOIT - Fort Hays Tech | North Central has been awarded a $3,002,788 grant to support the purchase of heavy machinery for its training program. This funding will expand opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience, increase the number of trained machinery operators in the region, and improve their ability to attain professional certifications.

The initiative addresses a critical regional need by preparing skilled operators who can assist with disaster response and recovery efforts in northcentral and northwest Kansas. The program is projected to graduate approximately 30 trained individuals per year, directly contributing to workforce readiness in the area.

“We are so grateful to be selected and to all who have assisted us in the application process and supported our proposal. This grant will enable us to better serve our students and communities. As a result, we can enhance the effectiveness and affordability of our heavy equipment operations program!” said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President Eric Burks.

Beyond disaster response, the project will bolster the agribusiness sector by enabling crucial infrastructure improvements. These enhancements include rebuilding access roads, creating waterways, installing culverts, and constructing ponds to mitigate flooding risks for crops, homes, and businesses. 

By equipping students with real-world experience in infrastructure development, the program will play a key role in strengthening the regional economy, enhancing economic resilience, and fostering long-term growth.

"This funding will allow our students to develop their equipment operation skills with the newest technology as they prepare to enter the workforce and strengthen the Kansas economy,” said Mark Jones, department chair.

The new equipment and expanded training opportunities will provide students with in-demand skills, making them valuable assets to local industries and disaster recovery efforts. This investment underscores Fort Hays Tech | North Central’s commitment to workforce development, economic growth, and regional sustainability.

**KSHSAA has updated the week’s schedule after this story was

The TMP-Marian girls and boys teams will now play a doubleheader
on Thursday, Feb. 27. The girls' game will start at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse in Hays.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs earned the No. 8 seed in the 2A
Sublette sub-state #1 next week and will host Medicine Lodge in the first
round.

TMP finished the regular season 12-9 and will host the 10-10
Indians on Friday, Feb. 28 at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The winner will get the top-seed Wichita County (19-1) or
the 16-seed Sublette in the semifinals.

The bottom side of the bracket has the No. 4 seed Hoxie hosting

🏀 TMP girls get sub-state against Medicine Lodge

With their win on Friday night over Norton, the TMP-Marian
boys basketball teams earned a first-round home game in next week’s opening
round of the 2A Sublette Sub-state.

The Monarchs boys finished the regular season 12-9 and
earned the No. 8 seed in the sub-state.

They will host Medicine Lodge (11-9), who is the No. 9 seed,
at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The Indians defeated the Monarchs in the third-place game of
the 2023 2A state tournament in Manhattan. They also defeated TMP in the 2-1A
state baseball tournament semifinals last May.

The winner will get either the top-seed Sterling or the No.
16 seed Phillipsburg.

In sub-state No. 2, Syracuse is the second seed, taking on
15-seed Hill City. 

The winner will take on either the seven-seed Ellinwood or
the 10-seed Trego. 

Plainville is the No. 3 seed. They will host 14-seed Smith
Center, and the winner will receive the winner of six-seed Hoxie and 11-seed
Oakley.

The high seed hosts the first two rounds, and the sub-state
championship games are played on Friday, March 7, in Sublette.

Hays Post Sports**KSHSAA has updated the week’s schedule after this story was
initially published. The TMP-Marian girls and boys teams will now play a doubleheader
on Thursday, Feb. 27. The girls' game will start at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse in Hays. With their win on Friday night over Norton, the TMP-Marian
boys basketball teams earned a first-round home game in next week’s opening
round of the 2A Sublette Sub-state.The Monarchs boys finished the regular season 12-9 and
earned the No. 8 seed in the sub-state.They will host Medicine Lodge (11-9), who is the No. 9 seed,
at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.The Indians defeated the Monarchs in the third-place game of
the 2023 2A state tournament in Manhattan. They also defeated TMP in the 2-1A
state baseball tournament semifinals last May.The winner will get either the top-seed Sterling or the No.
16 seed Phillipsburg.In sub-state No. 2, Syracuse is the second seed, taking on
15-seed Hill City. The winner will take on either the seven-seed Ellinwood or
the 10-seed Trego. Plainville is the No. 3 seed. They will host 14-seed Smith
Center, and the winner will receive the winner of six-seed Hoxie and 11-seed
Oakley.The high seed hosts the first two rounds, and the sub-state
championship games are played on Friday, March 7, in Sublette.<figure>

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs closed the regular season with a
doubleheader sweep of the Norton Bluejays on senior night at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse.

GIRLS: TMP 49, Norton 33 On a night when the TMP-Marian Monarchs girls basketball
honored six team members, they used a 14-3 run to close out the first half and
open the second half on their way to a 48-33 win over the Norton Bluejays on
senior night. The win also clinches a first-round home game for the Monarchs
(12-9, 6-4 MCL) in next week’s 2A Sublette sub-state.

The two teams were evenly matched in the game's first
minutes, with three ties and six lead changes.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman scored the final first quarter,
making it 13-12 TMP.

Koenigsman and Claire Schippers hit back-to-back
three-pointers to open the second quarter, and the Monarchs built a 19-13 lead.
But Norton eventually erased the deficit and tied the game at 19 with less than
two minutes and thirty seconds left in the first half. 

After the 19-19 tie, the Monarchs put together the 14-3 run
over nearly six and a half minutes that closed out the first half and opened
the third quarter, making it 33-22 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Norton (9-12 &amp; 6-4 MCL) closed the game within nine at
the end of the third quarter, at 36-27, but TMP outscored the Lady Jays 12-6 in
the final quarter to win 49-33.

Brooke Koenigsman scored a game-high for the Monarchs, and
Claire Schippers added 13 points, matching her season-high.

BOYS: TMP 56, Norton 46 The TMP-Marian Monarchs (12-9 &amp; 7-3) outscored Norton
25-10 to close out the first half and opened the second half as they handed the
Bluejays their only loss of the MCL regular season Friday 56-46.

TMP built an early lead thanks to the three-point shot. Ty
Schmeidler connected on two of his game-high six, and Caden Dinkel added his
first of three in the first quarter as the Monarchs built a 15-13 first-quarter
lead.

Norton (15-5 &amp; 9-1 MCL) outscored TMP by five to open
the second quarter and led 22-19 before the Monarchs answered with a 25-10 run to
lead by 12 at 44-32.

Schmeidler connected on three more three-pointers during the
run and then added a fifth for the game, putting TMP up 46-36 heading into the
final quarter. 

In the final frame, Norton closed within six before Will Eck
knocked down the 10th three-pointer of the night for TMP, and
Schmeidler converted on four of four free throws, securing the 56-46 TMP
victory.

Schmeidler led all scorers with 26 points.

TMP will begin play in the 2A Sublette regional next week.
Brackets will be released on Saturday.

🏀 TMP sweeps Norton to close out the regular season

The Fort Hays State track and field team delivered a strong performance Friday at the Loper Tune-Up, securing multiple event titles while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/annabeth-baalmann/8389">Annabeth Baalmann</a>&nbsp;continued her historic season in the women's pole vault. The team also sent athletes to the Nebraska Tune-Up to compete against a competitive Division I field.

Baalmann stole the show once again, clearing 14-0.50 to set a new school record—a mark that now ranks fourth in NCAA Division II this season. Her record-breaking effort highlighted a dominant showing for the Tigers. The men's pole vault squad was led by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>, who claimed victory, followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/brady-deges/8485">Brady Deges</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/kurtis-mccormick/8493">Kurtis McCormick</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/mason-younger/8540">Mason Younger</a>, completing an impressive 1-4 finish.

On the track, the Tigers showcased their depth in the 60m dash, with four athletes advancing to the finals, narrowly missing provisional qualifying marks.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/daniel-little/8514">Daniel Little</a>&nbsp;raced to victory in the men's mile, clocking a time of 4:32.70, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ethan-salmans/8502">Ethan Salmans</a>&nbsp;secured first place in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.47.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/kenny-fritsch/8489">Kenny Fritsch</a>&nbsp;added another title in the men's 200m, crossing the line in 23.24.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/keziah-bachman/8440">Keziah Bachman</a>&nbsp;claimed victory in the women's 3,000m, crossing the finish line in 12:07.24 to lead the field. Competing in Lincoln, Neb.,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/reba-mader/8402">Reba Mader</a>&nbsp;secured a win in the 400m, finishing in 56.92, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/hayden-albright/8477">Hayden Albright</a>&nbsp;earned runner-up honors in the 200m dash.

In the field events,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/jayme-hagerman/8396">Jayme Hagerman</a>&nbsp;took the women's long jump title with a personal-best leap of 18-6.00, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/liberty-booker/8390">Liberty Booker</a>&nbsp;also notched a personal best in the weight throw, finishing third with a mark of 53-2.75.

Fort Hays State now turns its attention to the MIAA Championships, set for next weekendar. The Tigers look to carry their momentum into the conference meet, aiming to make a strong statement on the championship stage.

🏃‍♀️ Baalmann shatters record as Tigers excel in tune-up meets

HAYS - Hays High capped a five game homestand by hosting Garden City on Friday night. The Indians got the sweep. The state-ranked HHS girls' won 63-29 and the boys cruised to a 57-33 victory.

GIRLS:&nbsp;#4 Hays 63, Garden City 29 There wasn't much that went wrong for Hays High on Friday night. The Indians used a 10-0 first quarter run and a season high nine three point field goals to win 63-29 over Garden City.

The Indians and Buffaloes each hit a pair of free throws in the first ninety seconds for the only tie in the game. Hays scored the next ten points of the game, six from the free throw line, to lead 12-2. Garden City was only within single digits twice more, the last at 16-8 with 1:15 left in the first quarter.

Hays led 18-8 after one quarter. The Indians pushed their advantage to twenty two different times in the second frame. A 7-2 run and 9-0 run in put Hays up 20 for the first time at 34-14. Hays led 36-19 heading into halftime.

Hays was never threatened in the second half. Garden City went to a zone defense in the third quarter. The Indians responded by making five of a season high nine threes against that defense.&nbsp;

Hays took a 55-28 lead into the fourth quarter. A three pointer ten seconds into the quarter started the continuous clock fourth quarter at 58-28. The Indians' final points came two minutes later. It was a momentous three points.

BOYS:&nbsp;Hays 57, Garden City 33 Hays used two first half runs to build a double-digit first half lead on their way to a 57-33 victory over Garden City.

The Indians scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. Hays was up 11-2 and had chances to take a their first double-digit lead but didn't convert. Garden City scored the game's next seven points to pull within two at 11-9. It was the closest the Buffaloes got all night.

Hays hit a three late in the first quarter for 14-9 lead heading to the second. It was a six point ball game at 20-14 when the Indians went on their best run of the game. A 15-0 run fueled by Garden City turnovers ballooned the Hays lead to 35-14. The Buffaloes went 4:40 without any points and finally found the net at 35-16 with forty seconds left before halftime.

Neither team could get into a groove in the second half. Hays outscored Garden City 11-8 in the third and 11-9 in the fourth for the 57-33 victory. The Indians did lead at one point in the fourth quarter by 30 points at 57-27.

Hays(11-7, 5-1) shot over 50% in the game and for the fifth time this season. Garden City(4-15, 2-5) could not pickup back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

Hays keeps pace, one game back of Great Bend in the Western Athletic Conference. They also remain in the hunt for a top eight seed in 5A West postseason.

Hays travels to Dodge City on Tuesday for their final road game of the regular season.

The Indians used a 10-0 first quarter run and a season high nine three point field goals to win 63-29 over Garden City.The Indians and Buffaloes each hit a pair of free throws in the first ninety seconds for the only tie in the game. Hays scored the next ten points of the game, six from the free throw line, to lead 12-2. Garden City was only within single digits twice more, the last at 16-8 with 1:15 left in the first quarter.Hays led 18-8 after one quarter.
