ATLANTA - Fort Hays State's Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;has been named to the 2025 WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches' All-America Team, announced Thursday by the coaches association. DeGarmo was one of 10 athletes nationwide in NCAA Division II to earn first-team honors this year after picking up WBCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades in 2024.

DeGarmo is just the third player in program history to earn first team All-America honors, joining Annette Wiles (1989-90) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). It is also only the third time in team history that a player has earned All-American recognition in multiple seasons.

The Andover, Kan. native wrapped up one of the greatest careers in program history with another stellar season, averaging 17.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game while knocking down 49.2 percent of her shots from the floor in 33 contests. She ranked in the top 10 in the MIAA in points (third), rebounds (third), assists (10th) and field-goal percentage (seventh).

DeGarmo was named MIAA Player of the Year for a second year in a row in addition to earning D2CCA All-Central Region First Team honors for the second-consecutive season. She was named to the MIAA All-Tournament Team and also earned a spot on the NCAA Central Region All-Tournament Team.

The graduate student scored in double figures 31 times this season, including nine games with 20 or more points. She recorded 10 double-doubles on the year, bringing her career total to 46. Her 567 points scored in 2024-25 are sixth-most in a single season in program history.

DeGarmo wraps up her career with 2,299 points in 156 games, ranking second in program history. She is the leading rebounder in school history with 1,248 career rebounds, while ranking fourth in assists (408), tied for second in steals (236), and second in field goals (865).

She helped the Tigers to 28 wins this season, sixth-most in school history. The Tigers surpassed 20 wins for the 14th consecutive season, extending the longest streak in NCAA Division II.

DeGarmo was the lone MIAA athlete to earn first team All-American honors, while both Grace Pyle of Pittsburg State and Reese Schaaf of Central Missouri received honorable mention recognition.

🏀 DeGarmo earns WBCA All-American honors

ATLANTA - Fort Hays State's Talia Kahrs&nbsp;was a finalist for the 2024-25 WBCA NCAA Division II Coach of the Year award, announced Thursday by the coaches association.

Kahrs was one of seven coaches nationwide to be named a finalist this year. The second-year head coach led Fort Hays State to 28 wins this season, sixth most in a single season in program history. The Tigers reached 20 wins for the 14th consecutive season, extending the longest active streak in Division II.

Fort Hays State finished second in the MIAA regular season standings and reached the finals of the MIAA Championship Tournament before advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Central Region Championship for the second year in a row.

Kahrs now has 53 wins in her first two seasons as head coach at Fort Hays State, making her the fastest coach to 50 wins in program history.

Mike Williams of Grand Valley State was selected as the National Coach of the Year.

Fort Hays State won four of the six singles matches contested, which were played first due to court availability. All four wins were in straight sets. Alfonso blanked her opponent at No. 2 by scores of 6-0, 6-0. TOPEKA, Kan. - The 27th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth to rally and beat Washburn 7-5 Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. The MIAA-leading Tigers are now 17-5 overall and 12-1 in league play after winning their fifth game in a row while the Ichabods dip to 13-12 on the year and 6-7 in conference games.

Fort Hays State got to work right away, manufacturing a run in the top of the first after a walk, a single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout. The Ichabods responded immediately, plating one run off two hits and a walk off Tiger starter Mike Acierno&nbsp;in the bottom of the first.

The Tigers had runners on base in each of the next three innings but were unable to push a run across, allowing the home team to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth off two base hits and three batters that were hit by a pitch.

The FHSU offense punched back in the top of the fifth when Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;drove in Derek Woolwine&nbsp;with an RBI single. Woolwine opened a two-out rally with a single before taking second on a wild pitch. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;then struck out but was able to reach first on a passed ball, extending the inning. The reigning MIAA Hitter of the Week made the Ichabods pay, helping the Tigers close within 3-2 with a single through the hole at short.

Trevor Baugh then delivered the first 1-2-3 inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth before WU pushed its lead back to 4-2 with a home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Fort Hays State had two runners reach in the seventh inning with no outs, but the Ichabod bullpen was able to get out of the jam.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/kaleb-carpenter/8453">Kaleb Carpenter</a>&nbsp;came on after the seventh-inning stretch, striking out a pair and working around a double to post another scoreless frame.

Brett Jacobs&nbsp;was next out of the pen, coming on with no outs and two on in the bottom of the eighth. The righty was able to get out of the inning with a ground out and two fly outs.

FHSU's ninth-inning rally opened with a pinch-hit single from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/jose-cintron/8418">Jose Cintron</a>. Two beaned batters and two strikeouts loaded the bases for DeGarmo, who worked a walk to close the gap to 4-3. The Tigers then scored four unearned runs after a throwing error and a Cooper Howell&nbsp;two-RBI single to right, putting FHSU in front for the first time since the top of the first.

Brandon Chavez&nbsp;came on to record his MIAA-leading seventh save after allowing one run to score on three hits in the bottom of the ninth.

Zane Knox&nbsp;and Howell both collected two hits on the day, while Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;and Woolwine both scored twice and DeGarmo and Howell both drove in two RBI.

⚾ No. 27 Tigers rally past Ichabods

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball swept a pair of non-conference games from Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday 

at Fleharty Family Field. The Tigers won by scores of 2-1 and 4-2 to improve to 18-6 overall for the season. The Rangers fell to 6-18 overall. FHSU ran its overall win streak to seven games, all in non-conference play.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 2, Northwestern Oklahoma State 1 Savanah Egger&nbsp;dominated in her second-straight appearance at home this week, holding Northwestern Oklahoma State to just one hit and a pair of walks. She struck out five on her way to a complete-game win, moving to 8-4 overall on the season. Her only blemish in the run column was a runner who reached base by error in the fourth inning.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single from Regan Curry&nbsp;and RBI double by Lilly Mohr. The Rangers got the one run back in the top of the fourth, but Egger shut them in the final three innings by retiring the final nine batters she faced. Egger also retired the side in order in the second and third innings. The one hit was Egger's fewest allowed in a game so far this season. Mohr led the Tigers with two hits in the game.

Chloe Brown threw a complete game for the Rangers, striking out five and allowing six hits. She moved to 3-8 on the season.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 4, Northwestern Oklahoma State 2 Fort Hays State jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings and held on once again to complete the sweep of NWOSU. Jules Bosco&nbsp;led off with a double in the first and Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;followed with an RBI triple to straight-away center field. Madison Pierce&nbsp;brought her home with an RBI groundout to the right side. In the second, Bosco drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

The score remained 3-0 all the way until the sixth when NWOSU had a single and then two-run home run by Rachel Sherwood to trim the lead to one. However, the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Lexi Mohr. Mohr and Bosco led the Tigers with two hits each.

Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;threw a complete game for the Tigers, recording six strikeouts with no walks allowed. She scattered six hits. Kathryn Jones took the loss in a complete game for NWOSU, allowing four runs on seven hits with one strikeout.

The Tigers return to conference play on Friday when they play host to Northwest Missouri State. The doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🥎 Tigers sweep Rangers, run win streak to seven

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Fort Hays State Tennis ran its overall win streak to six matches by edging University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday. The Tigers and Cougars played the match indoors at the Huether Family Match Pointe. The contest came down to the final singles match remaining, won by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/grace-unruh/8121">Grace Unruh</a>&nbsp;of FHSU in thrilling fashion.

Fort Hays State picked up the first point in the match by winning two of three doubles contests. The Tigers clinched the first team point when the No. 2 team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/suzana-faucz/8130">Suzana Faucz</a>&nbsp;and the No. 3 team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/ines-latorre/8117">Ines Latorre</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/yone-pereiro/8119">Yone Pereiro</a>&nbsp;each won 6-3. Pereiro dropped her No. 4 match 6-2, 6-3.The Cougars evened up the team count by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. Vangala fell at No. 1 7-5, 6-3, while Alfonso fell at No. 2 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). The team result came down to the No. 6 contest between Unruh and Katelyn Nesheim of Sioux Falls. Unruh fell in the first set 6-4, but rallied for a 6-1 win in the second to force a tiebreaker set. Unruh pulled away for a 10-5 win in the final frame to lift the Tigers to victory.

The Tigers continue their three-match road trip for the week at Winona State on Wednesday (Mar. 19) in Winona, Minn. The match is set for 1:30 p.m.

🎾 Tigers win last match to edge Cougars

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Fort Hays State baseball team is ranked 27th in the latest ABCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday by the coaches association. It is the first recorded time the Tigers have been listed inside a national poll since 2006 and the first time they have been mentioned in a poll since the 2011 preseason poll when they were receiving votes.

Fort Hays State is 16-5 on the season, including wins in 12 of its last 13 contests. The Tigers lead the MIAA at 11-1 on the year, including five wins over ranked opponents over the last two weeks in Missouri Southern and Central Oklahoma.

Two other MIAA programs are listed in the Coaches Top 30, including second-ranked Central Missouri and No. 29 Rogers State. Missouri Southern, Central Oklahoma and Washburn are all receiving votes this week.

Fort Hays State is also receiving votes in the most recent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.diviibaseball.com/rankings">D2Baseball poll</a>, released Monday.

The Tigers hit the road for the first time in nearly one month this afternoon when FHSU opens a midweek series at Washburn before taking on Pittsburg State in a three-game set over the weekend.

🏀 Three TMP boys named to All-MCL teams

The TMP-Marian girls’ basketball team had two players named to the All Mid-Continent League, released Monday by league officials.

TMP senior Brooke Koenigsman was named one of the unanimous first-team selections.

The complete list of selections is available below.

Koenigsman led the Monarchs, scoring 14.2 points per game. She also led the team in rebounds (5.0) and assists (3.2) per game. 

She was joined on the first team by Norton senior Hallie Brooks, also a unanimous first-team selection.

Brooks averaged 12.2 points per game this season. 

Seniors Emily Bainter from Hoxie and Kayla Jacobs of Phillipsburg were also named on the first team.

Oakley’s Jade Beckman was the only non-senior named to the first team.

TMP’s Gracyn Schipper was named to the second team. 

Ellis’ Isabella Eck and Natalee North were also named to the second team. Along with Russell’s Kelvie Reeves and Oakley freshman Alexa Weiser.

Hays Post SportsThe TMP-Marian girls’ basketball team had two players named to the All Mid-Continent League, released Monday by league officials.TMP senior Brooke Koenigsman was named one of the unanimous first-team selections.The complete list of selections is available below.Koenigsman led the Monarchs, scoring 14.2 points per game. She also led the team in rebounds (5.0) and assists (3.2) per game. She was joined on the first team by Norton senior Hallie Brooks, also a unanimous first-team selection.Brooks averaged 12.2 points per game this season. Seniors Emily Bainter from Hoxie and Kayla Jacobs of Phillipsburg were also named on the first team.Oakley’s Jade Beckman was the only non-senior named to the first team.TMP’s Gracyn Schipper was named to the second team. ⚾ FHSU's DeGarmo named MIAA Hitter of the Week

After winning the Western Athletic Conference title in 2024, the Hays High Lady Indians did a re-set of their goals for the 2025 campaign to include bigger and better final destinations.

The Lady Indians, under fifth-year coach Len Melvin, accomplished that in a big way, repeating their 8-0 WAC double round-robin record, but went two steps further, winning their Class 5A sub-state to reach the state championship for the first time in 29 years.

That ultimate goal, taking a 22-0 record to the state tourney, ended prematurely with a heart-breaking 51-48 to private school St. Thomas Acquinas in the quarterfinals of the state tourney on March 12 in Emporia.

However, that final record of 22-1 for the Lady Indians will certainly go down historically as one of the best in program laurels.

That will be the message for Melvin as he sees a solid class of seniors departing, including all-state guard Molly Martin and center Katie Linenberger, who both notched positions on the All-WAC first and second teams.

Shed no tears, though, as Melvin will welcome a talented underclass group back for 2025-26 spearheaded by rising-sophomore Jenna Schmeidler, who was voted WAC Player of the Year by the conference coaches. It is believed that Schmeidler is the first freshman to garner the award.

“We were blessed to have nearly a perfect blend of players in back-to-back-to-back classes,” Melvin said of this year’s Hays squad. “The seniors had suffered with bad losses as freshmen so they remembered what it was like to not be on a winning team and set a standard of hard work that carried through to the younger players.”

Melvin said the unselfishness of this year’s team was one of the key components of the success they enjoyed.

“Nobody cared about who scored the most points, or who played the most minutes,” Melvin said. “We were fortunate to have games where we were able to have a lot of players get significant varsity minutes.”

That’s what happens when your team is winning by big margins as the Indians averaged 64 points a game to their opponents’ 31. In the WAC, the margin was even higher (65.4-27.5), a 37.9-point differential.

“I think we had a running clock in about 16 or 17 games, so our statistics really don’t give a true picture of what some of the players could have done had the clock not been running,” Melvin said. “But, it gave us a chance to play a lot of young players to give them experience.”

While the WAC served as about 40 percent of the team’s schedule, it was the non-conference slate that provided the most challenges.

The Indians defeated Class 3A state semifinalist Colby, 52-35; they toppled private Sunrise Christian Academy, 64-43, and Life Prep Academy (63-56) while battling 4A power Wellington (in state semifinals) before winning a dramatic 74-72 overtime thriller.

“We wanted to be able to take that next step up to be competitive at the highest level, and I think we proved that we were able to do that,” Melvin said.&nbsp;

The joy of going undefeated during the regular season and then qualifying for the state for the first time in nearly three decades saw the enduring heartbreak of a season not fully realized in the team’s loss to St. Thomas Aquinas, which as the No. 8 seed, won the 5A title on Saturday (March 15).

“We got the worst draw possible,” Melvin said of the Indians’ first-round foe. “They’re very good, but we were right there with them. I still think we are as good as them, but just weren’t on that one night. When you’re playing at that level, you have to be able to meet the challenge and we came up just a little short.”

Aquinas was the only team to score more than 50 points against the Indians’ defense.

“The girls take a lot of pride and I think they did such a good job of transitioning from practice into the games,” Melvin said. “The defense has to be our identity because it gives you a chance to compete.”

Melvin, however, said there is little he would change, considering that despite losing a handful of seniors to graduation, he feels good about the returning group.

“We had a number of players in the lower classes who probably could have played varsity, but we wanted to be sure they got minutes on the court and thus we played them on sub-varsity,” Melvin said. “I think we’ve got a great group of players coming back and I’m excited to see where we go from here.”

While the winning margin in the WAC was significant, Melvin said he still has a lot of respect for the other schools.

“A lot of the teams have some really good underclass players and are well-coached,” Melvin said. “We don’t take anything for granted with any opponent and I’m proud that our team did a great job of preparing for each game and not take anybody for granted.”

Melvin loses Martin and Linenberger along with a couple of other veterans, but will return Schmeidler, the do-everything 5–7-point guard who averaged 15.9 points per game while directing traffic for the Indians’ offense. Martin and Linenberger averaged 13.7 and 9.6 points while the returning Winter averaged 6.3 ppg. Schmeidler’s point output was 366 for the season.

In addition to Schmeidler and Martin, the first team all-WAC included juniors Shamari Lewis and Kylie Rhine of Liberal, and K.J. Pinchon of Garden City.

Len Melvin will be the first person to tell you that he expected Jenna Schmeidler to be a good player going into her freshman basketball season at Hays High School.

But what he could not have told you is just how good she would be in her rookie high school campaign.&nbsp;

All Schmeidler did was to come into an already-talented Hays High roster, find her way to the starting point guard position that allowed all-state guard Molly Martin to move to the No. 2 shooting guard spot.

“It opened up a whole new playbook for us,” Melvin said of Schmeidler, who is believed to be the first freshman in the WAC’s 40-plus history to win the award. “She has given us so many options that worked to the talents of the other players.”

Schmeidler proved to be adept both on the offensive and defensive end of the court, averaging 15.9 points per game to lead the team in scoring. She shot 50.6 percent from the field, including 37.6 percent from 3-point range while making 89.9 percent of her free throws on 62-of-69 charities.

“Everybody around just becomes a better player,” Melvin said. “Obviously, there are things where she can get better, but her work ethic is as good as any player I’ve coached. I just wasn’t sure how she would transition to the varsity level as a freshman.”

For Schmeidler, the WAC honor was something of a mild shock if not total surprise.

“I knew I’d been working hard and knew that Molly&nbsp; and others were seniors and very deserving of the award,” Schmeidler said. “So, when Coach (Melvin) told, me I was just grateful that others saw that I had worked hard at playing the game.”

Schmeidler said she gives all the credit to her teammates who share in the award.

“The seniors accepted me from the very beginning,” Schmeidler said. “They took me right in. We were able to change the offense and was able to use my knowledge to help.”

Schmeidler said that her commitment to excelling in the sport started in the sixth grade.

“I knew I wanted to focus on basketball and to work to become the best player I could possibly be,” Schmeidler said. “I spent two hours a day working on all areas of my game. I’m never satisfied with how I play.”

Schmeidler said that her continued improvement will include getting stronger to help her in the drive to the basket and to improve her court vision.

“If I have a bad shooting night, I’ve got to find other ways to contribute,” Schmeidler said. “If I get stronger I can be more effective in protecting the ball on offense.”

Defensively, Schmeidler also sees areas in which she can improve.

“I think I do a pretty good job of playing on-ball defense,” Schmeidler said. “It’s important to have good communication with my teammates so I can help them more. My off-ball defense can get better, too.”

Her plans will include an intensive summer workout program with a personal trainer.

“We’ll work the first 30 minutes on agility drills and then work on all the specific individual drills to get better in all areas,” Schmeidler said. “The biggest thing is to get physically stronger and quicker and be better at seeing the game at a pace that benefits our team.”

While knowing she will miss the graduating seniors from this year’s squad, Schmeidler is excited with her other underclass returnees.

“A lot of them got valuable junior varsity minutes and they were tearing it up at that level,” Schmeidler said. “I think we’re gonna have an awesome team, and we just want to get back to state and improve to work toward a championship.”

Melvin, too, says he likes the roster that will return for 2025-26.

“We’ve got nice pieces in the junior-sophomore classes and it’s been beneficial to stack back-to-back classes with quality players,” Melvin said. “When you have somebody with the skill set of Jenna, you know you’ll have a good chance to win a lot of games.”

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State is one of 32 teams selected for the 2025&nbsp;National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and will open at Oklahoma State on Tuesday, March 18 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Wichita State (19-14) will make its 14th&nbsp;appearance in the NIT and first since 2019. Out of the Big 12 Conference, Oklahoma State finished the season at 15-17. Wichita State is 11-32 all time against the Cowboys with the two teams splitting each of the last four meetings.

Wichita State is 11-12 all time in the NIT which includes a 2011 NIT championship.

The winner of Wichita State and No. 4 seed Oklahoma State will advance to play the winner of No. 1 SMU and Northern Iowa on March 22-23.

First round play is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18 and 19, with the second round playing March 22 and 23. Quarterfinals will be held March 25 and 26 with four teams advancing to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the semifinals on Tuesday, April 1. The oldest postseason tournament in college basketball will conclude with the 87th&nbsp;NIT championship game on Thursday, April 3.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers threatened in the bottom half with a two-out single from Derek Woolwine, but UCO's Brady Gilmore escaped the frame unscathed.The third inning proved to be the difference-maker for FHSU. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1. After a single from Woolwine, Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;crushed a two-run homer to left, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;followed immediately with a solo shot of his own, making it back-to-back home runs and extending the lead to 4-1. Cooper Howell&nbsp;ripped an RBI double to left center, bringing home another run before Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;capped off the six-run explosion with an RBI double of his own to make it 6-1.UCO battled back in the fifth when Caden Robertson delivered a three-run home run to left center, trimming the FHSU lead to 6-4. However, Paul Panduro&nbsp;settled in to finish the inning, and the Tigers' bullpen shut the door from there.Kreutzer added an insurance run in the eighth inning, sending a solo home run over the left-center fence to push the lead to 7-4.Panduro (2-1) earned the win after tossing 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits while striking out seven. Brett Jacobs&nbsp;entered in the seventh and provided 1.2 scoreless innings before Brandon Chavez&nbsp;closed things out in the ninth, recording his sixth save of the season.FHSU finished with 11 hits, led by two-hit performances from Saavedra, Herrmann, DeGarmo, and Kreutzer. Robertson paced Central Oklahoma with three hits and three RBIs.UP NEXTThe Tigers head to Topeka to face Washburn Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Falley Field.
