ATLANTA — Major League Baseball announced Monday the rosters for the 2025 All-Star Futures Game, scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Among the 50 top prospects selected for the annual showcase are a pair of Kansas City Royals farmhands: catcher Carter Jensen and left-handed pitcher Frank Mozzicato.

Jensen, ranked No. 80 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list, is the No. 3 prospect in the Royals’ system. Mozzicato, the No. 12 prospect in the organization, is currently pitching for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Mozzicato has posted a 1-2 record with a 4.29 ERA in 14 starts this season. Over 63 innings, he has recorded 55 strikeouts, allowed 45 hits, and held opposing hitters to a .206 batting average.

Wrobleski (4-2) pitched six innings of three-hit ball in place of opener Lou Trivino, Kirby Yates worked a perfect eighth and Jack Dreyer handled the ninth, helping Los Angeles win for the sixth time in seven games.

Max Muncy and Miguel Rojas also drove in runs for the Dodgers, who have won six consecutive series.

Kris Bubic (6-6) allowed Hernández's two-run shot in the second inning among his three hits and two walks in five innings. The left-hander struck out five but still took his fourth loss in his last five starts, despite maintaining a 2.25 ERA.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the first to score the only run for the Royals, who have lost seven of their last eight games.

Both of the teams paid homage to the Negro Leagues, whose museum is less than 10 miles from Kauffman Stadium. The Dodgers wore hats from their Brooklyn days out of respect for Jackie Robinson, who played for the Kansas City Monarchs before breaking the color barrier, and the Royals wore the interlocking “KC” hats of the 1945 Monarchs.

The Dodgers were leading 2-1 in the fifth when Freddy Fermin led off with a bunt single for Kansas City. Drew Waters worked a 3-0 count before failing to get down a sacrifice bunt, striking out instead. Wrobleski proceeded to get Jonathan India to pop out and struck out Witt to end the threat.

The Royals went 6 for 12 with runners in scoring position in their 9-5 win Saturday. They were 1 for 5 on Sunday.

D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89.

His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his Louisville, Kentucky, home.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d-wayne-lukas-hosptialized-3696adc1800e69d3f7708374bd444d1c">Lukas had been hospitalized</a>&nbsp;with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions.

“Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry — developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner’s circle,” his family said in a statement. “Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.”

Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

“The whole secret of this game, I think, is being able to read the horse: Read what he needs, what he doesn’t need, what he can’t do, what he can do,” Lukas said in May before his 34th and final Preakness Stakes. “That’s the whole key. Everybody’s got the blacksmith, everybody’s got to the same bed available, the feed man. We all can hire a good jockey. We all can hire a pretty good exercise rider if we’ve got the means, so what the hell is the difference? The horse is the difference and what we do with him in reading him.”

Lukas was affectionately known around the barns and the racetrack as “Coach” because he coached high school basketball before his professional career with horses began. Even with months to go before his 90th birthday, he would get up on his pony in the early morning hours and go out to the track himself, rather than letting his assistants do the day-to-day work.

Born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin as the second of three children, he rose to prominence in the sport with quarter horses in races that are effectively sprints. He moved into thoroughbreds in the late 1970s and won his first Preakness with Codex in 1980.

Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts.

"Today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in Thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years,” Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said. “We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport’s biggest days.”

Achieving something of a career renaissance over the past decade, one he credits to finding the right owners willing to spend money on horses, Lukas won the Preakness last year with Seize the Grey. Asked what motivates him to keep doing his job well into his late 80s, he gave a pep talk fit for a locker room before a big game.

“If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses,” Lukas said. “That’s how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep — as long as you got the passion. Don’t let that sofa pull you down. It’s a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know if I really want to do this today.’ Erase that. The most important decision you’ll ever make in your life is your attitude decision. Make it early, and make the right one.”

Roughriders in a battle of the first and second place teams in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League Saturday evening at Larks Park. The first place Larks improved to 13-3-1 overall and 10-3 RMBL while the Roughriders fell to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The Larks used four hits, two walks and a hit batter to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Thomas Lyssy had an RBI single, Jackson Babcock a two-run double and CJ Reid an RBI single.

The Roughriders answered with four in the top of the second but the Larks would take back the lead for good when Lyssy drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth. 

The Larks would add three more runs in the sixth on a Trent Baker two-run homer and Brady Kreutzer RBI single which pushed the lead to 8-4.

They blew the game open with a five-run seventh. Kaleb Duncan started the scoring with an RBI single. Baker added an RBI double, Duncan scored on a wild pitch, Babcock and Kreutzer also had runs scoring singles.

Duncan closed out the scoring with an RBI single to left to end the game by run-rule in the eighth.

Baker and Taber Stokes both had three of the Larks 14 hits. Baker drove in three runs with Duncan, Lyssy, Babcock and Kreutzer all driving in two runs.

Brooks Jones (1-0) allowed only one hit in four shutout innings of relief with eight strikeouts and three walks and picked up the win.

Starting pitcher Jordan Stribling allowed four runs on three hits with six strikeouts and five walks.

The Larks stole 11 bases in the game. Stokes had four, the most since Damian Ruiz stole four in game one of a doubleheader against the Liberal Bee Jays on July 19, 2023.

⚾ Larks pull away from Roughriders to take series opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino homered, doubled and drove in a career high-tying five runs, and the Kansas City Royals beat Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 on Saturday to snap an 11-game home losing streak.

Ohtani made his third start of the season and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-pitching-882646a3578e99e4c81b1c0e774df7d1">threw the fastest pitch</a>&nbsp;of his career, a 101.7 mph fastball that induced an inning-ending double-play grounder by Pasquantino in the first.

The Dodgers' two-way superstar threw 27 pitches in two scoreless innings. He is working as an opener as he eases back into pitching following Tommy John surgery in 2023. Ohtani went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as LA's leadoff batter.

Pasquantino’s&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MLB/status/1939074998011916473">430-foot, three-run blast</a>&nbsp;to right-center off Ben Casparius (6-2) capped a four-run fifth inning for the Royals, who won at Kaufmann Stadium for the first time since May 31. They ended a six-game skid overall.

Freddie Freeman went 3-for-3 with a homer for the Dodgers, whose five-game winning streak ended. Infielder Miguel Rojas pitched the eighth.

Seth Lugo (5-5) threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out eight.

Casparius relieved Ohtani in the third and quickly allowed three hits and a pair of runs on Maikel Garcia’s two-out double off the left-field wall.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit an RBI single in the fifth before Pasquantino went deep. Pasquantino added a two-run double in the seventh.

Jonathan India and Witt each had four hits as the top four Royals batters finished with 11 hits and eight runs.

The Royals' four-run fifth was their biggest inning at home since they scored four in the eighth against the Chicago White Sox on May 8.

The Royals' 15 home-field home runs are the fewest in the majors.

The Dodgers plan to use an opener for Sunday’s series finale against Royals LHP Kris Bubic (6-5, 2.16 ERA).

LIBERAL – After falling behind early, the Hays Larks
outscored the Liberal BeeJays 8-0 from the seventh inning on, including a pair
of runs in the top of the 10th inning in an 11-9 extra-inning
victory Thursday in Liberal.

The Larks (12-3-1, 7-3 RMBL) took the early 3-1 lead through
three and a half innings, scoring on a Garrett Gruell RBI single in the first
inning, a CJ Reid double in the second inning and a passed ball.

Liberal erased the deficit, scoring four runs in the bottom
of the fourth and then extended the lead with three in the fifth and one in the
sixth for a 9-3 lead.

Down six runs through six innings the Larks outscored
Liberal 8-0 over the next four innings.

They got their rally started by scoring two runs in the
seventh on a wild pitch and a Ried RBI single.

Jackson Babcock’s grand slam in the top of the eighth inning
tied the game at nine.

Then, after a scoreless ninth, Dylan LaRue put the Larks up
10-9 with an RBI triple, and Babcock followed with a sacrifice fly to put Hays
up 11-9.

Babcock was two-for-three with five RBIs and scored three
times. LaRue collected three hits and scored three times.

Adrian Najar pitched the final four innings of relief for

PLAINVILLE — Corbyn Marquess will be hosting the first annual Fore the Kids Classic, Saturday, July 26. The tournament will be a 4-person scramble held at Rooks County Golf Course, Plainville. All tournament proceeds will be donated to Children's Mercy Hospital. 

Because of generous business and individual donations the tournament will have a guaranteed payout for first&nbsp;place in all flights of $600.

 Corbyn is very passionate&nbsp;about this project as she was diagnosed&nbsp;with thyroid cancer when she was 16 years old. Children's Mercy gave her excellent care and she would like to give back to an important cause.

In conjunction with the tournament she is raffling off a spot at the Oklahoma State Golf Camp that is held in June of 2026.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is going to again play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, and next year certainly will have a bigger role than last time.

Witt announced Thursday that he is committed to playing for the United States and manager Mark DeRosa in the 2026 WBC. It will be Witt's second time on the team.

When part of Team USA in 2023, Witt was 22 and the youngest player on the roster who was coming off a standout rookie MLB season. He was a bench player who went 1 for 2 at the plate, and also was a pinch-runner in the ninth inning of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/world-baseball-classic-japan-us-ohtani-trout-09c620b87260f7d8e8736ccc8fd950a6">championship game won by Shohei Ohtani and Japan</a>.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/judge-captain-us-wbc-ffb327da780472c99043c7e80c50c986">who will be the U.S. captain</a>, and Pirates ace Paul Skenes have also committed to play for Team USA next spring.

“It’s truly an honor,” Witt, who turned 25 two weeks ago, told MLB Network. “It’s something I’ve kinda dreamed about my whole entire life. Just being part of that team a couple years ago was amazing, and now we’re going to bring home the gold.”

Witt was the runner-up to Judge in the American League MVP voting last season, when the shortstop led the majors with a .332 batting average. Witt hit .285 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in the Royals' first 80 games this year.

DeRose said on MLB Network that he approached Witt during spring training about playing in the 2026 WBC, to which the player responded, “100%. I'm starting, right?”

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will play Mississippi State in the second game of the Hall of Fame Classic at 8:30 p.m., CT on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, as the NABC announced the complete bracket for the 25th annual event on Thursday (June 26).

Nebraska and New Mexico will open the tournament at 6 p.m., CT on Thursday. The winners of the two semifinal matchups will play in the championship game at 8:30 p.m., CT on Friday, Nov. 21 with the consolation bracket set for 6 p.m., CT.

All games will be streamed on Peacock and NBC Sports NOW.

Tickets for the 2025 Hall of Fame Classic will go on sale via the T-Mobile Center box office and t-mobilecenter.com on Sept. 3.

The Bulldogs are coming off their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024-25 with a third straight 20-win season under head coach Chris Jans. They finished in a four-way tie for ninth in the rugged SEC with Arkansas, Georgia and Vanderbilt with an 8-10 mark.

This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the schools and the first since a 67-61 MSU win at the Never Forget Tribute Classic in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 14, 2019. K-State won the previous three meetings in the series in 1984, 1985 and 1994.

Nebraska won the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament championship in 2025, finishing with a 21-14 record and a 7-13 mark in Big Ten play. LIBERAL
– Lane Sparks had five hits and drove in four runs, Thomas Lyssy added three
hits and five RBIs and the Hays Larks gained a split in their doubleheader with
the Liberal Bee Jays with a 14-8 win in game two Wednesday night at Brent Gould Field. 

The Larks were held to one run on two hits and lost the opener 4-1.

Liberal
(8-6, 3-3 RMBL) scored two runs in the bottom of the first of the second contest, but the Larks (11-3-1,
7-3 RMBL) answered with three in the third, three in the fourth and five in the
fifth to build and 11-2 lead. They would add three more in the top of the
seventh which pushed the lead to 14-2 before the Bee Jays struck for six in the
bottom of the inning.

Lyssy
gave the Larks the lead in the second contest with a two-out bases loaded
double which scored three. An inning later, Kaleb Duncan drove in a run with a
single to center. Lane Sparks pushed the lead to 6-2 with a two-run triple
later in the frame.

Lyssy
led off the fifth with a double followed by back-to-back walks. Lorenzo Rios was hit
by a pitch to make the score 7-2. CJ Reid followed with a two-run double, Duncan a sacrifice fly and Sparks and RBI single to give Hays an 11-2 lead.

Sparks
drove in a run with a double down the right field line and Lyssy added another
run with a double to center in the seventh.

The
Bee Jays made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. They opened the inning
with three straight hits then with one out, scored a walk, two-run
homer, a double, a single and a passed ball Julio Ramos who got got
back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Trent Baker (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts and picked up the win.

In the opener, Jason
Davis held the Larks to on run on two hits over the first six innings. Larks starter Dalton Campbell (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits but walked
four over four innings and suffered his first loss of the season.

Thomas
Lyssy had both of the Larks hits including a triple in the second in which
Garrett Gruell was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first. Lyssy would
later scored in a sacrifice fly from Taber Stokes.

The
Larks loaded the bases on three walks in the third but couldn’t score. They got
two on with one out in the seventh but a pop out and line out ended the game.

(AP) — Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings of two-hit ball, Tampa Bay scored three times in the second on an array of singles and bunts, and the Rays held on the rest of the way to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Rasmussen (7-5) struck out five and walked two before turning it over to the Tampa Bay bullpen on a hot, humid night. Three relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk before Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 14th save.

The Rays (45-35) have won five straight on the road, nine of their last 12 overall and are a season-best 10 games over .500.

José Caballero had an RBI bunt single and Danny Jansen laid down a sacrifice bunt against Michael Wacha during the decisive second for Tampa Bay. Christopher Morel, Josh Lowe and Chandler Simpson had singles in the inning.

Other than that, Wacha (4-7) was tough on the Rays. He went six innings and struck out nine while walking just one.

His biggest problem has been the Royals' biggest problem: They aren't scoring. Not only have they managed four runs total amid a four-game losing streak, they have given Wacha two runs of support or fewer in 13 of his 16 starts this season.

Kansas City has lost nine straight at Kauffman Stadium since beating Detroit on May 31, its longest home skid since dropping 10 in a row in April and May 2023. The Royals also have lost 10 of their last 14 games overall.

The Royals put runners on the corners in the fourth, but Salvador Perez popped out on his first pitch to end the threat.

Kansas City has not hit a home run in its last 54 innings at Kauffman Stadium.

Rays RHP Shane Baz (7-3, 4.79 ERA) starts the series finale Thursday. RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-7, 4.81) starts for the Royals.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Center Paul Mbiya has signed a financial aid agreement to play basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced Wednesday. Mbiya is from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo will be a freshman for the 2025-26 season.

Mbiya is 6-foot-11, 260 pounds, and has a 7-foot-8 wingspan. He played this past season in the ASVEL team system in the top-tier level French Pro A League. Mbiya averaged 15.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game in 2024-25. In 2023-24, Mbiya averaged 15.5 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game for the ASVEL U21 team. He also appeared in 10 games in 2023-24 for the top ASVEL team. Prior to playing for ASVEL, Mbiya was part of the NBA Academy Africa and was a 2022 Basketball Without Borders All-Star selection.

"We've had a good last couple of days recruiting with Kohl (Rosario) signing yesterday and Paul today," Self said. "Paul is big. He's a legit 6-11 with a wingspan of 7-foot, 8 inches. He fits very well with the way we play. He is an immediate impact guy, and he gives us much needed size to go along with Flory (Bidunga) and Bryson (Tiller)."

Mbiya becomes the sixth incoming freshman signee for Kansas, joining Darryn Peterson, Samis Calderon, Bryson Tiller, Kohl Rosario, and Corbin Allen. Tiller joined the KU team as a redshirt in January. Kansas' spring transfer portal signees include Melvin Council Jr. (St. Bonaventure), Jayden Dawson (Loyola Chicago), and Tre White (Illinois).
