LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — AJ Storr had a season-high 16 points off the bench and three starters also reached double figures as No. 1 Kansas easily handled Oakland 78-57 on Saturday.

KJ Adams scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, Rylan Griffen added 11 and Hunter Dickinson finished with 10. Dickinson led the Jayhawks with nine rebounds.

Kansas (4-0) pulled away methodically in the first half, leading by 22 at halftime. The Grizzlies never got closer than 18 in the second half. Kansas played the final 4:32 with only reserves in the game.

Allen Mukeba led Oakland (1-3) with 19 points, and Tuburu Naivalurua added 12.

Oakland struggled from 3-point range, shooting 6 of 23 (27%), and was woeful at the free-throw line (3 for 12).

Oakland: The Grizzlies were no match for Kansas inside during the first half, when the game was decided. They were outrebounded 20-12 and outscored 26-14 in the paint.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have too much depth for a mid-major program like Oakland to overcome. The Jayhawks got points from 11 players. They had 36 bench points, compared to 17 for Oakland.

Dickinson hit a floater in the lane at the 4:37 mark of the first half to give Kansas a 34-17 cushion. Griffen made a baseline 3 just before the buzzer, and the Jayhawks took a 46-24 lead into the locker room.

DaJuan Harris scored only two points in 23 minutes, but he had six assists and just one turnover. He was tenacious on defense, with four steals — including three in the first few minutes of the second half when Kansas eliminated any thoughts of an Oakland comeback.

Oakland returns home to face Eastern Michigan on Thursday. Kansas hosts UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday.

DALLAS(AP)— Bela Karolyi, the charismatic if polarizing gymnastics coach who turned young women into champions and the United States into an international power, has died. He was 82.

USA Gymnastics said Karolyi died Friday. No cause of death was given.

Karolyi and wife Martha trained multiple Olympic gold medalists and world champions in the U.S. and Romania, including Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton.

“A big impact and influence on my life,” Comaneci, who was just 14 when Karolyi coached her to gold for Romania at the 1976 Montreal Olympics,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DCc1ex3pJWU/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" target="_blank">posted on Instagram</a>.

The Karolyis defected to the United States in 1981 and over the next 30-plus years became a guiding force in American gymnastics, though not without controversy. Bela helped guide Retton — all of 16 — to the Olympic all-around title at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and memorably helped an injured Kerri Strug off the floor at the 1996 Games in Atlanta after Strug’s vault secured the team gold for the Americans.

Karolyi briefly became the national team coordinator for USA Gymnastics women’s elite program in 1999 and incorporated a semi-centralized system that eventually turned the Americans into the sport’s gold standard. It did not come without a cost. He was pushed out after the 2000 Olympics after several athletes spoke out about his tactics.

It would not be the last time Karolyi was accused of grandstanding and pushing his athletes too far physically and mentally.

During the height of the Larry Nassar scandal in the late 2010s — when the disgraced former USA Gymnastics team doctor was effectively given a life sentence after pleading guilty&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-news-ap-top-news-lansing-in-state-wire-north-america-de31f08ab1fe435c88129d64bd1fbee4">to sexually assaulting gymnasts and other athletes</a>&nbsp;with his hands under the guise of medical treatment — over a dozen former gymnasts came forward saying the Karolyis were part of a system&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/0c67e962d7524c87a865d3c468bdd521">that created an oppressive culture</a>&nbsp;that allowed Nassar’s behavior to run unchecked for years.

Still, some of Karolyi’s most famous students were always among his staunchest defenders. When Strug got married, she and Karolyi took a photo recreating their famous scene from the 1996 Olympics, when he carried her onto the medals podium after she vaulted on a badly sprained ankle.

BETHANY, Okla. –Fort Hays State Men's Soccer captured the Great American Conference (GAC) Tournament Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southern Nazarene on Saturday (Nov. 16). With the win, the Tigers secured an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, their 10th&nbsp;appearance in the national tournament in just the program's 14th&nbsp;season of existence and first since 2021.

The Tigers scored two goals early in the match and then held on by yielding only one to the Crimson Storm in the second half. Fort Hays State is the first to win a GAC Tournament title on the opponent's home pitch since the 2019 season, when Rogers State tied FHSU 2-2 in Hays and claimed the trophy on a penalty kick shootout. The Tigers were the first No. 3 seed to win the tournament since 2018. It was the first GAC Tournament title for the Tigers since 2021, when they also won in Bethany 2-0 over Northeastern State.

The Tigers set the tone early less than four minutes into the match as senior defender&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jeremiah-johnson/8553">Jeremiah Johnson</a>&nbsp;delivered a statement goal that put Fort Hays State on the board. Mines started out the dual red hot, winning the first 8 matches. At 197 pounds eighth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/8295">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers on the board by major decision. Henry started the second period on bottom and quickly gained an escape for the first points of the match. The former All-American later secured a third-period takedown and gained four near fall points to the score to 8-0 where the match ended.

HUTCHINSON - Hays High continued their postseason road trips with a trek to Hutchinson on Friday night. Hays won 28-0 for their first victory over the Salthawks in four tries.

The Indians held on downs on the first offensive series of the game for Hutchinson. The Salthawks attempted a run on 4th and 2 but was stuffed at their own 35 yard line.

Holden Lind took the first offensive play for Hays 30 yards to the four yard line. Carter Graham finished of the remaining yards on the next to plays. A Carson Moore extra point made the score 7-0 three minutes in to the game.

Hays forced a punt after three plays. The Indians drove into the red zone but lost the ball on downs. Following a short put by Hutchinson on three plays the Indians found pay dirt again. Two plays into the drive Graham found Jarek Purdy 34 yards down the field for a touchdown. Moore tacked on the extra point for a 14-0 advantage with :51 left in the first quarter.&nbsp;

Hutchinson possessed the football for the next 7:33 but came away empty. They got as far as the Hays 13 yard line but threw an incomplete pass&nbsp; on fourth down. Neither team could do anything with the football for the remainder of the first half for the halftime score of 14-0 in favor of the Indians.

Hays kept up the same pressure in the second half. The Indians opened the half with the football turned 11 plays into six points. Ian McGuire broke threw tacklers on the way to a 43 yard scoring run on third down. Moore's extra point made the score 21-0 with 7:51 left in the third quarter.

The Indian defense continued to control the game. Hutchinson had five second half drives. They punted once and failed to convert on fourth down four times. One of the failed conversions came just four plays after Hays turned the ball over for the first and only time.&nbsp;

The Salthawks took over at the Indian 37 but managed one yard. The Indians final score came from the Hutchinson 17 yard line after another four down stop by the defense. This time Holden Lind found the end zone. Carson Moore's extra point made up the final score of 28-0.

Hays held Hutchinson to 121 yards of total offense, 105 of those on the ground. The Salthawks were averaging 334 total yards, 289 rushing.

Hays grabs their third shutout of the season for the first time since 1999.

The Indians are 7-4 on the year and will play a 12th game in a single season for the second time in program history. It is the fourth trip to the semi-finals for the Indians' program. They will play Eisenhower in Goddard next Friday.

HAYS, Kan. – Katie DeGarmo recorded a double-double and was one of four Tigers in double figures as Fort Hays State won their home opener 77-52 over Adams State Friday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season, while Adams State dropped to 2-2 overall.

DeGarmo scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Kate Dilsaver added 15 points, Olivia Hollembeck 12 and Telexa Weeter a career-high 11.

The Tigers used an 11-0 first quarter run to build a 22-10 lead after the first period. The Grizzlies cut the lead inside 10 four times in the second quarter, but the Tigers ended the half on a 6-0 run with four points from Dilsaver and a pair of free throws by Hollenbeck for a 40-26 lead.

The TIgers quickly pushed the lead to 18 in the third quarter on four straight free throws. Bailey Wilborn then hit three-straight 3-pointers, the final of which sparked a 12-0 run, which also included five-straight points from Hollenbeck, midway through the quarter. The Tigers led by&nbsp; 31 with 2:09 remaining in the third. They never let ASU closer than the final 25 point margin the rest of the way.

FHSU shot 50 percent from the field (25-of-50). They made seven of their first nine 3-point attempts and finished 7-of-13 from beyond the arc . They also made 20 of their 26 free throw attempts. FHSU dominated glass, outrebounding the Grizzlies by 24.

The Tigers held the Grizzlies to 37 percent overall from the field. ASU shot just 54.5 percent at the free-throw line. Kiiyani Anitielu was the only ASU player to reach double figures in scoring with 18, and she tied for a team-high four rebounds.

Fort Hays State will play MSU Denver at 5 p.m. Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Roadrunners lost to Nebraska-Kearney in the game Friday. The Lopers play Adams State at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.&nbsp;

🏀  #23 FHSU women cruise past Adams State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team fell in three sets on the road at Missouri Western Friday evening, losing 19-25, 10-25, 15-25. The Tigers are now 12-12 on the year and 4-11 in conference play, while the Griffons improve to 22-6 overall and 12-4 in league action.

The teams traded the lead four times early on in the first set, with FHSU keeping things within one for the first half of the frame. Leading 14-13, Missouri Western used an 11-6 run to pull away and take the set, 25-19. The Griffons then scored the first five points in the second set before going on to win 25-10.

Fort Hays State took the lead early in the third set thanks to kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/ella-goodwin/8179">Ella Goodwin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/gracie-rains/7948">Gracie Rains</a>. The Tigers led as late as 8-7 before the Griffons used a 10-3 run to take control. Missouri Western continued to control the momentum, going on to secure the sweep with a 25-15 win.

The Tigers are now 12-12 on the year and 4-11 in conference play, while the Griffons improve to 22-6 overall and 12-4 in league action.The teams traded the lead four times early on in the first set, with FHSU keeping things within one for the first half of the frame. Leading 14-13, Missouri Western used an 11-6 run to pull away and take the set, 25-19. The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team will make its home debut this weekend with a pair of games against former RMAC rivals. The Tigers will first battle Adams State on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. before hosting MSU Denver on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.

Nebraska-Kearney will also be playing the same two teams in the reverse order in neutral site contests, with those matchups slated to begin two hours before the listed FHSU game time.

The Tigers lead the MIAA and rank 11th in DII in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 29.7 percent from the floor.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/8329">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;was named the first MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week, presented by Southern Bank, of the 2024-25 season after leading the Tigers with 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks per game over the weekend. She opened the year with 29 points in the win over the Vikings, one off her career high.

Hollenbeck moved up to ninth on the FHSU all-time scoring list in the process, now with 1,450 career points. She is 14th on the career scoring list amongst active DII players, while her 174 blocks are sixth-most among current DII competitors.

The Tigers are 28-5 in home openers during the NCAA DII era (since 1991-92). The women are 568-140 at home since Gross Memorial Coliseum opened in 1973, good for a winning percentage better than 80 percent.

The Tigers have won 12 in a row against schools from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FHSU's last loss to an RMAC team came at Nebraska-Kearney in November 2007 (54-70, 11/29/07). FHSU is 2-0 against RMAC schools under Kahrs.

Dug McDaniel drove the baseline for an open layup and made a steal at the other end, leading to his fast-break layup to cut Kansas State’s deficit to 56-46 with 9:14 remaining. After a timeout, Carter sank a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

Miller missed a wide open 3-pointer early in the shot clock in the closing minutes but got his own rebound before making a 3 from the corner to extend the lead to 72-57 with 2:33 left.

It was just Kansas State’s fifth loss at home in 36 games under coach Jerome Tang.

Jordan Sears had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Daimion Collins added 12 points for LSU (3-0). Corey Chest, who entered with just three minutes played this season, grabbed 13 rebounds in 21 minutes.

🏀 LSU beats K-State behind former Wildcat Cam Carter's 20 points 

BETHANY, Okla. - In a thrilling semifinal clash GAC/MIAA Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal, No. 3 seed Fort Hays State and No. 2 seed Rogers State played to a 3-3 draw on Thursday evening. With 110 minutes not enough to determine an advancing team, the Tigers triumphed 7-6 in a dramatic penalty kick shootout to move on to the championship match on Saturday. The match officially goes on record as a tie, moving FHSU to 11-3-4 overall and RSU to 8-5-6 overall.

The match kicked off with high intensity, as both teams came out with strong energy. Rogers State struck first in the 15th minute when the Tigers were called for a foul inside the box, leading to a penalty kick converted by Marcos Vasallo. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Major League Baseball tonight announced its First and Second All-MLB Teams, which included three Royals.

Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;was named All-MLB First Team at shortstop, while catcher&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;and starting pitcher&nbsp;Seth Lugo&nbsp;were named All-MLB Second Team at their positions.

The Royals three players selected across both teams tied the Astros and Dodgers for 2nd most and trailed only the Padres, who had a Majors-most four selections.

This is the first All-MLB Team honor for Witt Jr. and Lugo. Perez was named First Team All-MLB at catcher in 2020 and 2021. In the six years since these awards were introduced in 2019, Salvy is one of two catchers to earn All-MLB honors three times, along with Philadelphia’s&nbsp;J.T. Realmuto, who was named First-Team All-MLB in 2019 and 2022 and Second Team All-MLB in 2020.

Major League Baseball introduced the All-MLB Team awards in 2019 to give a more comprehensive honor that covered the full breadth of a season, complementing the All-Star Game selections that are awarded just past the season’s halfway point. NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team is ranked 25th in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Coaches' Poll, released Wednesday by the coaches organization. The Tigers moved down two spots after finishing sixth at the Central Region Championships last weekend in Joplin, Mo.

Fort Hays State is the top-ranked team that did not earn a bid to the 2024 NCAA Division II Championships. The Tigers won three races during the regular season and did not finish behind a Division II school until the postseason when they suffered just seven head-to-head losses.

The Tigers earned 45 points in the voting process, 10 behind 24th-ranked Colorado Mesa. Adams State received all eight possible first-place votes and will enter the NCAA DII Championships as the favorite next Saturday (Nov. 23) in Sacramento, Calif.

While the Tigers were not chosen to compete as a team, Fort Hays State will still have representation at the national meet with junior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/emily-diercks/8438">Emily Diercks</a>&nbsp;chosen to run as an individual thanks to her seventh-place finish at the regional championship.2024 was the first season the FHSU women's program was ranked in the national polls more than once during the regular season. Ten teams from the Super Region will be selected to the NCAA Tournament, which begins next week following conference tournaments throughout the country this week.

Four of the ten teams selected to the Super Region 3 field of the NCAA Tournament will be automatic selections, which includes conference tournament champions from the GAC, GLVC, GMAC, and GLIAC conferences. Fort Hays State is the No. 3 seed in the GAC Tournament this week, which will be held Thursday and Saturday (Nov. 14 and 16) in Bethany, Oklahoma hosted by No. 1 seed Southern Nazarene.

According to the Super Region 3 PDF found at the bottom of the region rankings on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-men/d2/regional-rankings">NCAA.com</a>, Fort Hays State has the 10th-best performance indicator and 11th-best RPI in Super Region 3. FHSU has the second-best in-region record (11-2-2) with an .800 win percentage and the third-best win-loss percentage against NCAA Division II competition in the region (11-3-3) at .735.

The Tigers will be attempting to knock off Rogers State in the GAC Tournament Semifinals, which currently holds the No. 10 ranking in the Super Region. The only categories Rogers State holds an edge over FHSU on the Super Region formula PDF is strength of schedule (.537 compared to .476) and RPI (10th&nbsp;compared to 11th), otherwise FHSU holds the advantage in three categories for in-region win-loss record, win-loss record in NCAA Division II matches, and performance indicator. The win percentage against teams with above .500 records is dead even between FHSU and RSU. The Hillcats are 1-0-1 against the Tigers this year, so FHSU is looking to level the results between the teams for the year. The semifinal match could be a big key for FHSU elevating in the super region rankings even more after ranking No. 12 last week, but still must go into the conference tournament with the mindset of winning the tournament title and taking the automatic qualifier. (AP) — The Chiefs got three of their key players back from injuries Wednesday when wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster joined running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive end Charles Omenihu on the practice squad ahead of this weekend's trip to Buffalo.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said there's a chance Smith-Schuster would play in the pivotal matchup between the unbeaten Chiefs and the Bills. He's been out since Week 7, when he hurt his hamstring in the opening minutes of a win over San Francisco.

“We'll see as he goes through practice,” Reid said. “If it's up to him, he's back.”

Smith-Schuster's injury, coupled with earlier injuries to wide receivers Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice, were big reasons why the Chiefs traded a draft pick to Tennessee to land DeAndre Hopkins. And while they share similar skill sets, Smith-Schuster and Hopkins also have some different abilities, and there is a chance they could see the field at the same time Sunday.

As for Pacheco and Omenihu, Reid called it “unlikely” that they would play in their first game after rejoining practice.

Pacheco fractured his fibula in Week 2 against Cincinnati and required surgery. The initial timeline called for him to return in six to eight weeks, and that puts Pacheco right on schedule. But the Chiefs also are not desperate for him to return to the backfield with Kareem Hunt playing so well since he was signed essentially off the couch when Pacheco went down.

Hunt has touched the ball at least 21 times each of the past five games. And despite having no real offseason or training camp, he has run for 449 yards and five scores and caught 14 passes for 116 yards in his first six games.

The Chiefs hope that adding Pacheco to the backfield in the coming weeks will lighten Hunt's load, though, and perhaps keep both running backs in better shape for the stretch run. In fact, it could look a lot like the one-two punch of Hunt and Nick Chubb that the Browns have had for most of the past five years.

“I'm happy for him, and I know he's excited to get back out there. I think it's going to be a heck of a backfield,” Hunt said. “I think it could be very similar (to Cleveland). I'm excited. I'm used to working with other great backs and stuff like that.”

Omenihu had been on the physically unable to perform list ever since the defensive end tore his ACL in the Chiefs' AFC title game win in Baltimore. The Chiefs have been biding their time until he could return by leaning heavily on George Karlaftis, Mike Danna and Felix Anudike-Uzomah, then added Josh Uche to the pass rush group in a trade with New England.

Omenihu was a force in 11 games for Kansas City last season, piling up seven sacks and forcing a pair of fumbles.

"All these players are different in regards to how they come back from injury,” Chiefs manager Brett Veach told a small group of reporters Wednesday. “They all heal differently. And the exact nature and the rehab and the body and all that — I mean, they’re just so different. Some of these kids, they hit the ground running. Some of these guys, it takes a few games. Some of these guys it takes a few months. Some of these guys, it takes a whole year. There’s a big unknown there.”

(AP) — The Chiefs got three of their key players back from injuries Wednesday when wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster joined running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive end Charles Omenihu on the practice squad ahead of this weekend's trip to Buffalo.Chiefs coach Andy Reid said there's a chance Smith-Schuster would play in the pivotal matchup between the unbeaten Chiefs and the Bills. He's been out since Week 7, when he hurt his hamstring in the opening minutes of a win over San Francisco.“We'll see as he goes through practice,” Reid said. “If it's up to him, he's back.”Smith-Schuster's injury, coupled with earlier injuries to wide receivers Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice, were big reasons why the Chiefs traded a draft pick to Tennessee to land DeAndre Hopkins. Walsh finished the regular season tied for the national lead in assists with 14. The 14 assists is currently tied for the single-season record at FHSU, matching the amount produced by Derick Gonzalez in 2017. Walsh started the year recording assists in five-straight matches, recording half of his total in the month of September. He has scored a goal and added at least one assist in all four matches he scored in this season. Walsh has 36 career points (8 goals, 20 assists) and leads FHSU with 22 this season (4 goals, 14 assists), already doubling his point total of 11 from the 2023 season.Ovelar 

Semeniuk is now a two-time all-conference selection. He moved up to the first team this year after a second-team selection last year. He enters postseason play tied for the team lead in goals with eight, while adding three assists. His 19 points ranks second for the Tigers. He had one hat trick for goals in a home contest against Ouachita Baptist earlier this season and leads the GAC in game-winning goals this season with three. He ranks third in the GAC in goals, fifth in points, and eighth in shots. He has 35 total points in his career, now with 15 goals and five assists over two seasons.

German is now a four-time all-conference selection overall in his collegiate career after being a three-time first-team selection at Central Methodist University in the Heart of America Conference at the NAIA level. He was also a three-time All-America selection at CMU. Though his primary role on the team has been defender, German has been utilized in both the midfield and in attacking situations for the Tigers this season. He has 16 points for the season with four goals and eight assists. He ranks third in the GAC for assists and second for the Tigers behind Walsh's national-leading number. He ranks seventh in the GAC in points. Now in his fifth year of collegiate soccer, German has an impressive 102 career points with 27 goals and 48 assists. He produced 23 goals and 40 assists over his four years at CMU.

Dickerson picked up the first all-conference selection of his career after playing at Maryville University for two years and Florida Memorial University for one year. He is a second-team selection in the midfield this year with three goals and five assists (11 points). Dickerson has started all 17 matches for the Tigers this season, playing 1,278 minutes. Dickerson now has 19 points in his collegiate career with a total of six goals and seven assists.

Johnson received the second all-conference selection of his collegiate career with a second-team selection at defender this season. He was an All-Heart of America Conference second-team selection as well in 2022 at Central Methodist University, one of his previous two stops before coming to FHSU this season. Johnson has two goals and two assists this season (six points). One of his goals was a game winner. He has started 16 of 17 matches this season and played 1,284 minutes. Johnson has 31 points in his collegiate career with nine goals and 13 assists over four years.

Carlman is an honorable mention selection in his first year of collegiate soccer. He posted an impressive eight goals in just 11 regular season matches, dealing with injuries throughout the season. He is tied for the team lead in goals and has 18 points this season (8 goals, 2 assists) to rank third on the team. He has two-game winning goals this year and had a hat trick in a 5-0 win over Maryville University in September.

Tellez Ramirez is now a three-time all-conference selection in the GAC/MIAA after earning the distinction twice at Newman University. The graduate transfer has one goal and one assist for the Tigers this year in 10 matches, also battling injury issues throughout the season. He was a two-time second-team selection at Newman in 2022 and 2023. He has 38 points in his collegiate career with 12 goals and 14 assists over five years.

Elgas is now a two-time all-conference honorable mention performer at defender. He received the same distinction back in his freshman season of 2022. Starting all 16 matches he has played in this season, he has played 1,166 minutes helping solidify the Tiger back line. Though he has no points this season, he has 10 in his three-year career at FHSU with two goals and six assists.

Five of the eight all-conference selections (Walsh, Ovelar Semeniuk, Dickerson, Tellez Ramirez, and Elgas) were also part of the 11 individuals named to the GAC/MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
