boys golf team battled high winds along with 15 other teams and placed seventh

SALINA - The Hays High boys tennis placed fifth at the Salina South Invitational Thursday. Colin Clark went 3-1 and finished fifth in No. 1 Singles. Kenny Fisher was 2-2 and placed 13th in No. 2 Singles. The No. 1 Doubles team of&nbsp;Henry Fitzthum and Carsen Riat went 1-3 and placed 8th. The No. 2 Doubles team of&nbsp;Xavier Catura and Kale Schwien also went 1-3 and finished in 12th place.

On Monday, the Indians finished in second place at the Phillipsburg Invitational.&nbsp;Madox Zimmerman went 0-3 and placed fourth in No. 1 Singles.&nbsp;Ethan Dague was 0-3 and also placed fourth in No. 2 Singles. The No. 1 Doubles team of Preston Parr and Mason Schleicher went 3-0 to finish first. The No. 2 Doubles team of Leo Hernandez and Corbin Luck went 2-1&nbsp; and placed second.

Tuesday, the Indians traveled to Abilene and finished second.&nbsp;Ken Shaffer went 2-1 in No. 1 Singles and placed third.&nbsp;Bryton Unsworth went 0-3 in No. 2 Singles and placed sixth. CHICAGO (AP) — Gavin Sheets homered, Erick Fedde pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning and the struggling Chicago White Sox edged the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Wednesday for a doubleheader split that ended a six-game slide.

Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning of the opener to put the Royals ahead, and Kansas City went on to win 4-2.

Paul DeJong had a five-hit day, adding two singles in the second game after going 3 for 3 in the first with a homer, double and walk. The White Sox are off to the worst start in franchise history at 3-15.

“I don't think I've played a doubleheader where we did 30 minutes in-between,” DeJong said. "Two full nines, so it was a grinder day, but we got it done in the second game.

“To win a tight game against a team that's kind of beaten us all year, that's special for us."

The doubleheader was scheduled after Tuesday night’s game was rained out. The Royals (12-7) are 6-1 against the AL Central rival White Sox.

Fedde (1-0) allowed three hits, including two infield singles, over 5 2/3 innings for his first win with Chicago. The 31-year-old right-hander signed with the White Sox in December after pitching in South Korea last season.

“It went really well,” Fedde said of his fourth start with Chicago. “I felt like I was able to get leadoff guys out, control counts. Had a few walks (three), but I picked my places with it and got to good situations overall.”

Sheets' solo shot in the sixth off Michael Wacha struck the right-field foul pole and put Chicago ahead 2-0. Dominic Fletcher drove in Chicago's first run with a single in the fourth.

Hunter Renfroe knocked in a run with a groundout in the seventh against Tanner Banks, Chicago's first reliever. Deivi Garcia followed with two scoreless innings for his second career save and first this season.

Wacha (1-1) yielded two runs and four hits in six innings. The veteran righty struck out four and walked two.

“Our hitters will be there. They come up clutch, they get timely hitting,” Wacha said. “It just wasn't in the cards today.”

It was in the opener, though, when Perez homered off Michael Kopech to left-center to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. Kansas City’s eight-time All-Star catcher started both ends of the twinbill after missing Monday's game with a groin injury.

“Clearly, that home run was the huge point in the game," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “But regardless, I thought (Perez) looked really good prior to that, too.”

Perez launched the first pitch he saw from the hard-throwing Kopech with two outs for his fifth home run.

“Not surprised. He earned that,” Quatraro said. “I mean, Kopech, that guy's got an electric arm. To be able to turn a fastball around like that, that's impressive.”

Perez, who turns 34 next month, was injured in a collision at the plate in a 2-1 loss to the Mets in New York on Sunday.

Renfroe added a solo shot in the ninth and Adam Frazier drove in the Royals’ first run with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and was aboard for Perez's homer after beating out an infield single.

DeJong hit a two-run homer off Royals starter Brady Singer.

Nick Anderson (1-1), the second of four Kansas City relievers, pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. James McArthur worked around DeJong's double in the ninth for his fourth save.

Kopech (0-2) allowed two runs on two hits in the eighth and was charged with his first blown save.

Singer yielded two runs and three hits in five innings, walking three and striking out five. The right-hander had given up just two runs over 18 1/3 innings in three previous starts for a 0.98 ERA.

White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon pitched five strong innings in his major league debut and exited with a 2-1 lead. The lanky 23-year-old right-hander allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one while throwing 54 of 79 pitches for strikes.

“I thought I did well. I thought I executed a lot of pitches,” said Cannon, who had family and friends in the stands. "I was really able to execute my game plan going in.

“It was a dream come true, really," he added.

Cannon retired his first five hitters and should have gotten a sixth to end the second. Nelson Velázquez hit a line drive to center field, but Fletcher slipped twice and the ball sailed over him for a double.

Chicago jumped on top 2-1 in the bottom half on DeJong’s third homer.

Veteran outfielder Tommy Pham was expected to report to Triple-A Charlotte after finalizing a minor league contract with the White Sox on Tuesday.

Royals: RHP Alec Marsh (2-0, 4.32 ERA) faces Baltimore RHP Dean Kremer (0-1, 4.96) in Kansas City on Friday.

White Sox: LHP Garrett Crochet (1-2, 3.57 ERA) takes the mound Friday in Philadelphia against RHP Spencer Turnbull (1-0, 1.80).

HAYS -&nbsp;Delayed by 24 hours the Hays High Indians and Great Bend Panthers opened their three game regular season series in Hays on Wednesday.

Hays scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-1 victory.

Hays High opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Dan Willeford drove in Alyse Zimmerman. Great Bend responded back with a single tally in the top of the third to tie the game at one a piece.

Hays broke the tie in the bottom of the same inning. Heads up base running by Shae Augustine and Alyse Zimmerman put both in scoring position on a ball that got just by the Panther catcher. During the same at-bat Brynlee Brous hit a hard single to right field that scored Augustine to score from third. An error in right field allowed Zimmerman to keep running and push the lead to 3-1.

There would be no more scoring for the rest of the game. Aubree Thomas sat down Great Bend in order in the fourth inning. She worked around a double in the fifth and overcame an error in each the sixth and seventh inning to preserve the 3-1 victory.

Thomas struck out eight and walked none. She allowed five hits in the victory.

Hays improves to 6-5 on the year and 5-0 in conference play. The Panthers fall to 13-4 and 6-1. The Indians head to Great Bend tomorrow for a double header with the Panthers.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis played its final home match of the spring on Wednesday, falling to No. 29 ranked Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 7-0. The Tigers fought hard, but the Lopers were too much to overcome with two nationally ranked and five regionally ranked individuals. UNK moved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA, while FHSU is now 6-11 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA.

FHSU celebrated Senior Day prior to the match as Fiorella Mendez&nbsp;is the lone graduating senior on the squad this year. Over four years at FHSU, Mendez has collected over 50 wins in singles and doubles action combined and she had a thrilling singles match on Wednesday against Loper opponent Alexis Bernthal. Heidi Lubbers&nbsp;also likely played her final home match with sister Hope in exhibition doubles as she plans to focus on her educational goals in her upcoming senior year of 2024-25.

Mendez fell in the first set of her singles match with Bernthal 6-1, but battled back for a 6-4 second set win to force a third-set tiebreak. Mendez battled Bernthal throughout the tiebreak forcing a win-by-two situation, but unfortunately Bernthal, a regionally ranked player, won the tiebreak 12-10. Mendez was the only Tiger to take her match to three sets.

Nebraska-Kearney's top five singles players were all regionally ranked, but the Tigers still put up a valiant fight. At No. 1 singles, Shreethika Vangala&nbsp;had a few set point opportunities against regionally ranked Melisa Becerra, but ultimately Becerra rallied to win the opening set 7-5 and went on to win 6-1 in the second. Irina Alfonso&nbsp;fell to No. 31 nationally ranked Fabiana Gamboa at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0. Yone Pereiro&nbsp;fell to No. 29 nationally ranked Jazmin Zamorano at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2. Ines Latorre&nbsp;fell to a regionally ranked Loper in the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-1, and Grace Unruh&nbsp;fell in her No. 6 match 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, the No. 2 team of Alfonso and Latorre and the No. 3 team of Pereiro and Unruh each fell by scores of 6-3. UNK's No. 45 nationally ranked doubles pair of Becerra and Narindra Ranaivo won the No. 1 match over Mendez and Vangala 6-1.

In exhibition play, the Lubbers twins fell 6-0 in doubles action. In singles exhibition, Bethan Gill and Ines Steeman&nbsp;each came up short by scores of 6-2 and 6-0 respectively.

Fort Hays State goes on the road for its final four matches of the season. They play a pair of non-conference matches this weekend in Arkadelphia, Arkansas at Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State, neighboring Great American Conference schools that are right across the street from each other.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf concluded its spring season with an eighth-place finish at the MIAA Championships, held at Shoal Creek Golf Club from April 15-17. The tournament course featured a par-71 layout spanning 7,011 yards. Cole Streck and Cooper Scheck&nbsp;each secured an 11th-place finish, posting a score of 12-over par for the tournament. Scheck's resilient performance earned him All-MIAA status, accumulating 13.5 points for the season.

The Tigers wrapped up the event 64-over par with a total of 916 strokes across three rounds. Their third-round score of 292 stood as the team's best for the tournament, tying for fourth in round three. Jackson Rader&nbsp;delivered the standout individual performance, finishing round three 1-under par. Rader's under-par round was one of only six achieved in the tournament. FHSU recorded 25 birdies, 137 pars, and an eagle by Rader. The team's season stroke average closed at 298.1, marking the first time in 30 years that the season average dipped below 300. Both Scheck and Streck's impressive top-15 finishes contributed to their standings in the MIAA individual rankings.

Scheck showcased notable performances in the first and third rounds, posting scores of 73, 78, and 74, respectively, to finish the week at 11-over par, tying for sixth in par 3 scores. Streck's consistency shone in the first two rounds, carding scores of 77 and 76, each punctuated by a birdie. He surged in the third round, tallying four birdies and finished 1-over par. Streck excelled in par 5 scores, boasting an average stroke count of 4.78, and clinched the most pars on the team, tying for eighth in the tournament with 32.

Rader fired off rounds of 77, 88 and 70 and tied for 34th. Rader had a solid first round, going 6-over with one birdie. The third round was Rader's round, going 1-under par with two birdies. The sophomore eagled hole 13 to put his round under par and kept if there. Rader secured 29 pars, the second-highest on the team, and also excelled in par 5 scoring alongside Streck.

Tanner Copeland&nbsp;posted rounds of 78, 85, and 76, finishing the tournament 26-over par. Copeland's best showing was in round three, where he carded two birdies and finished 5-over par. The senior accumulated four birdies across the tournament.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/parker-krob/7694">Parker Krob</a>&nbsp;and Jacob George&nbsp;did not receive a finishing score. Krob began the first round, with George stepping in to complete rounds two and three. George managed to birdie three times across two rounds and posted scores of 80 and 79.

Luis Limon of Missouri Southern secured the individual title after shooting 4-over par, three strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Limon's impressive performance included an opening round of 72, followed by scores of 75 and 70 to finish strong. MSSU claimed the team victory, with three Lions finishing in the top 10, including the top two individual finishers. ⛳ Tiger men finish eighth at MIAA Championships, Scheck and Streck tie for 11th

There are two sides to Hays High senior Brendan Stults. According to head baseball coach Dustin Dreher he is a bulldog on the mound. At other times you will see him performing behind the double bass.

Baseball has led him to sign with Fort Hays State University where the music department is willing to work with his schedules.

Stults says while the two sides are polar opposites, baseball and the double bass are "...two in the same. They both require a lot of practice and a lot of technical work." The bonus is that Stults doesn't feel like he has to change who he is while doing either skill.

Out at the baseball diamond Stults has a home on the mound. Dreher had a decision to make during Stults' junior year. Place him on the junior varsity roster and make sure he gets lots of reps or get occasional and inconsistent time on varsity. While Stults was disappointed he landed on the JV team he trusted the coaching staff.

One year later he is signing with the hometown Fort Hays State Tigers.

Stults currently has a 1.91 ERA that covers 11 innings pitched. He has pitched in three games an started two of those. He has allowed just three earned runs during his time on the mound.

While he has limited time with a bat in his hand during games, Stults points out with a wry smile that he has the highest batting average on the team at .500. He is 1 for 2 at the plate this season with his first varsity hit of the year coming on Tuesday against Dodge City when Hays locked up the Western Athletic Conference championship.

This past fall Dreher had a conversation with the senior pitcher. Stults mentioned his goal was to pitch for FHSU. As a former Tiger himself, Dreher is pleased to see him get that opportunity.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State Tiger baseball team hit three home runs to overcome a four-run deficit and defeat William Jewell (Mo.) 11-8 on a windy Tuesday afternoon at Larks&nbsp; Park. The two teams combined to hit seven home runs in a game that saw the two teams combine for 29 hits. The Tigers (22-20) snapped a four-game losing streak while ending the Cardinals (21-16) five-game win streak.

Tiger starter Spencer Maley&nbsp;surrendered a lead off home run to Alex Epp to begin the game but recovered to retire the next three batters. Maley worked out of bases-loaded jam in the second getting getting Epp to fly out to center to end the inning. Andrew Hansen took over on the mound in the third inning, striking out the first batter before yielding a home run to Evan Jilbert. A remarkable diving play and throw by shortstop Sebastian Burgos to get a runner out at third base held WJC to just one run in the inning.

Fort Hays State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;reached base on an error, followed by a single from Zane Knox. Jose Cintron's sacrifice fly brought Kreutzer home to cut the lead in half.&nbsp;

William Jewell used a sacrifice fly and two-run homer from Dawaon Tweet to extend their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth.

The Tigers roared back in the bottom of the fifth. Cesar Saavedra doubled followed by a home run from Isaiah Ural to pull the Tigers within 5-3. FHSU capitalized on a fielder's choice, walk, and single, with Trey DeGarmo delivering his third hit of the game with the bases loaded which drove in a run and pull the Tigers back within a run at 5-4.

The Tigers pulled even in the sixth when Kreutzer's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded brought in a run. The Cardinals regained the lead with an RBI double in the seventh, but Fort Hays quickly responded, scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Saavedra's two-run homer.

William Jewell's Evan Jilbert added another solo home run in the eighth inning, but Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;answered for the Tigers with a home run of his own in the bottom of the inning to push the FHSU lead to 11-7.

William Jewell used three walks to load the bases in the top of the ninth&nbsp; then scored a run on a single which drove Brett Jacobs from the game. Landyn Sterling came and got the final out and end the game.

The Tigers utilized six pitchers, conceding eight earned runs while striking out nine. Jacobs (1-1) earned the win going 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Sterling picked up his first save.

Offensively, the Tigers amassed 16 hits, with Saavedra, Ural, Herrmann, and DeGarmo leading the charge with multiple hits each. DeGarmo led the way with four hits and an RBI. Nearly every Tiger contributed with an RBI, with Saavedra, Ural, Kreutzer, and Burgos each contributing two. Kreutzer extended his hitting streak to a team-best 14 games.

Fort Hays State hosts Emporia State in a key MIAA series beginning Friday at Larks Park. They will then travel to Liberty Mo. to take on William Jewell in the Tigers final non-conference game of the season next Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ Tigers rally past William Jewell in offensive showdown

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian
Monarchs girls track team had four first and four second place finishes and won
the Plainville Invitational by one point of Ellis who had five first place and
four second place finishes. Norton won the boys division by three points over
Plainville. TMP-Marian finished in fifth place.

Shalee Gottschalk led
the TMP girls with first place finishes in the 100 hurdles (15.55) and the 300
hurdles (50.61). She also finished second in the triple jump (33-08.75) and was
a part of the second place 4x100 relay which also includes Shyanne Yost, Navaeh
Weigel and Emma Basgall.

Wiegel won the long jump
(16-05.5) and Macara Rohr finished first in the triple jump (34-02.0).

In addition to being on
the second place 4x100 relay team, Emma Basgall was second in the 100 meter
dash (13.32) and the long jump (16-04.5) and placed third in the 200 meters (28.15).

Ellis’ Evelyn Merriman
won the 100 meters (13.04) and 200 meters (27.07). Avery Boydston won the 1600
(5:38.84) and finished second in the 800 (:33.92). Isabella Eck took the high
jump (5-3.0) and Natalie North the discus (118-08.0). North was second in the shot
put (34-01.5).

Kylee Pfeifer finished
second in the 300 hurdles (51.93) and Reagan Jimenez placed second in the
javelin (96.03.0).

Caydence Carter had the
only top-three finish for the Plainville girls, placing third in the shot put (33-4.5).

Caden Becker led the
Monarch boys with a second place finish in the 800 (2:15.68). 

Logan Russell was the
top placer for the Railer boys finishing third in javelin (134-4).

A.J. Brown had the only
first place finish for the Plainville boys, winning the 110 hurdles (16.17).
Brown placed second in the 300 hurdles (44.40).

Other second place
finishes for the Cardinal boys included Roy Bright Jr. in the long jump (19-02.25),
Tucker Rudman the discus (145-0) and Braylon Bittel in the javelin (151-11) and
shot put (47-1).

followed with an RBI single. Four straight walks plated two more runs then Johnson
singled which scored two.

HHS added three more in
the second on an RBI single from Graham, a double from Brett Schumacher who
later scored on a wild pitch.

The Indians added another
run in the third then scored five in the fourth to end it early.

Cooper Johnson and Jack
Weimer both had three of the Indians 17 hits. Johnson drove in a career-high

CHICAGO (AP) — The Kansas City Royals’ game at the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night has been postponed because of rain.

It will be made up on Wednesday afternoon as part of a straight doubleheader.

Kansas City beat Chicago&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-white-sox-score-lugo-9f51d9b56efae644197f5d1fac620cd7">2-0 in the series opener</a>&nbsp;on Monday night.

White Sox right-hander Jonathan Cannon takes the mound in the doubleheader opener for his big league debut. Right-hander Brady Singer starts for the Royals.

Kansas City right-hander Michael Wacha and Chicago right-hander Erick Fedde start the second game.

The rainout creates an extra day of rest for Royals catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-perez-b495ebd2ed1ecafd912c4f9f03d40e47">Salvador Perez</a>, who is dealing with a groin injury.

Perez was out of the starting lineup before the game was postponed, but manager Matt Quatraro said he was available off the bench.

“He came in early, got worked on ... did his hitting and running,” Quatraro said. “Really we’re just trying to use discretion a little bit. Hopefully he feels better tomorrow.”

Perez, who turns 34 next month, had an MRI on Monday that showed a mild groin strain. He got hurt during Kansas City’s series finale at the New York Mets on Sunday.

Perez is batting .339 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 16 games this season. He hit his 250th career homer on Saturday.

The slumping White Sox finalized a minor league contract with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/white-sox-pham-716910dbbf8db68d1d8d96e572302d83">Tommy Pham</a>. The veteran outfielder will report to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, giving him some time to ramp up before joining the big league team.

“He’s got a track record in this game, and he’s a really good hitter,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “He’s got the ability to control the strike zone. ... He’s got an edge to him that I really like.”

⚾ Royals game Tuesday postponed due to rain in Chicago

ALVA, Okla. – Fort Hays State improved to 22-20 overall on the season with a doubleheader sweep at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday. The Tigers won game one by run rule, 8-0 in six innings, before taking the second contest by a score of 9-5. Northwestern Oklahoma State moved to 17-27 overall on the season with the results.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 8, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0 Fort Hays State took an early lead in the first contest and never looked back as Savannah Egger&nbsp;recorded her fourth complete game shutout of the season. Egger scattered just four hits over 6.0 innings with one walk, while striking out six in a game that was shortened by an inning due to the run rule. Egger is now 12-9 on the season.

The Tigers went up 1-0 in the first inning when Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;had a two-out double and Loren Beggs&nbsp;followed with an RBI single to drive in Tiffany. The lead extended to 3-0 in the second inning with another two-out rally. Regan Curry and Madison Pierce&nbsp;singles and a fielding error by the Rangers loaded the bases and Peyton Shepard&nbsp;drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle.

NWOSU took an initial lead in the first 1-0 before FHSU took the lead 2-1 in the third. NWOSU took the lead back at 3-2 with single runs in the third and fourth, but FHSU ultimately took the lead back with a pair of runs in the fifth and held on to the lead the rest of the way.

Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;threw the first 5.2 innings of the game for FHSU, recording eight strikeouts, though the Rangers were able to pick up 11 hits against her. All five of the runs she allowed in the game were earned. Emma Montoya&nbsp;took over with two outs in the sixth to slam the door on a threatening opportunity for the Rangers and went on to record her first save of the season with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work. She entered the game with two runners in scoring position and two outs in a 7-5 game.

The Rangers opened their half of the first with a double and triple to instantly take a 1-0 lead before the Tigers recorded an out. However, Schmidt worked her way out of the jam with three-straight strikeouts.

Madison Pierce&nbsp;drew a walk to open the third and eventually came in to score on a two-out RBI single by Carly Stuke. Peyton Shepard&nbsp;extended the inning with another single and then Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;pushed the Tigers into a 2-1 lead with another RBI single. Two batters later, Loren Beggs&nbsp;put the Tigers in the lead 4-3 with her team-leading third homer of the season that flew over the wall in left field.

The Tigers loaded up the bases in the sixth on a Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;single, a Stuke double, and then a Shepard walk. Beggs upped the FHSU lead to 6-3 with a two-RBI single, then Alondra Dominguez followed with an RBI double to make it 7-3.

The Rangers put together yet another two-out rally in the sixth with a pair of RBI singles to make it 7-5, but Montoya took over for the Tigers and got a groundout to keep NWOSU from potentially tying the game or taking the lead. FHSU got both runs back in the top of the seventh when Pierce and Ramirez-Johnson singled to set up a two-RBI double by Stuke. Montoya got the first two outs of the seventh with strikeouts before getting a groundout to end the game.

Stuke, Shepard, and Ramirez-Johnson all had three hits in the game as FHSU recorded 16 as a team and finished the day with 30 hits between the two games. Beggs and Shepard each had four RBIs on the day between the two games to lead the Tigers.

Fort Hays State now prepares to take on MIAA-leading Central Oklahoma on Friday in Hays at Fleharty Family Field. The doubleheader between the teams starts at 1 p.m.

🥎 Tigers bats come to life in sweep of Rangers

NEW YORK (AP) — Whitey Herzog, the gruff and ingenious Hall of Fame manager who guided the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series title in the 1980s and perfected an intricate, nail-biting strategy known as "Whiteyball," has died. He was 92.

Cardinals spokesman Brian Bartow said Tuesday the team had been informed of his death by Herzog's family. The team was not yet sure whether it happened Monday night or Tuesday. Herzog had been at Busch Stadium on April 4 for the Cardinals' home opener.

Under Herzog, the Cards won pennants in 1982, 1985 and 1987, and the World Series in 1982, when they edged the Milwaukee Brewers in seven games. Herzog managed the Kansas City Royals to division titles in 1976-78, but they lost each time in the league championship to the New York Yankees.

Overall, Herzog was a manager for 18 seasons, compiling a record of 1,281 wins and 1,125 losses. He was named Manager of the Year in 1985 and voted into the Hall by the Veterans Committee in 2010, his plaque noting his "stern, yet good-natured style," and his emphasis on speed, pitching and defense. Just before he formally entered the Hall, the Cardinals retired his uniform number, 24.

When asked about the secrets of managing, he would reply a sense of humor and a good bullpen.

Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog was born in New Athens, Illinois, a blue-collar community that would shape him long after he left. He excelled in baseball and basketball and was open to skipping the occasional class to take in a Cardinals game. Signed up by the Yankees, he was a center fielder who discovered that he had competition from a prospect born just weeks before him, Mickey Mantle.

Herzog never played for the Yankees, but he did get to know manager Casey Stengel, another master shuffler of players who became a key influence. The light-haired Herzog was named "The White Rat" because of his resemblance to Yankees pitcher Bob "The White Rat" Kuzava.

Like so many successful managers, Herzog was a mediocre player, batting just .257 over eight seasons and playing several positions. His best year was with Baltimore in 1961, when he hit .291. He also played for the Washington Senators, Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers, with whom he ended his playing career, in 1963.

"Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it," he liked to say.

After working as a scout and coach, Herzog was hired in 1967 by the New York Mets as director of player development, with Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan among the future stars he helped bring along. The Mets liked him well enough to designate him the successor to Gil Hodges, but when the manager died suddenly in 1972 the job went to Yogi Berra. Herzog instead debuted with the Texas Rangers the following season, finishing just 47-91 before being replaced by Billy Martin. He managed the Angels for a few games in 1974 and joined the Royals the following season, his time with Kansas City peaking in 1977 when the team finished 102-60.

Many players spoke warmly of Herzog, but he didn’t hesitate to rid his teams of those he no longer wanted, dumping such Cardinals stars as outfielder Lonnie Smith and starting pitcher Joaquin Andujar. One trade worked out brilliantly: Before the 1982 season, he exchanged .300 hitting shortstop Garry Templeton, whom Herzog had chastised for not hustling, for the Padres' light-hitting Ozzie Smith, now widely regarded as the best defensive shortstop in history. Another deal was less far successful: Gold Glove first baseman Keith Hernandez, with whom Herzog had feuded, to the Mets in the middle of 1983 for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey. Hernandez led New York to the World Series title in 1986, while Allen and Ownbey were soon forgotten.

Herzog was just as tough on himself, resigning in the middle of 1990 because he was “embarrassed” by the team’s 33-47 record. He served as a consultant and general manager for the Angels in the early '90s and briefly considered managing the Red Sox before the 1997 season.

If the '82 championship was the highlight of his career, his greatest blow was the '85 series. The Cardinals were up 3 games to 2 against his former team, the Royals, and in Game 6 led 1-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, with Worrell brought in to finish the job.

Jorge Orta led off and grounded a 0-2 pitch between the mound and first base. In one of the most famous blown calls in baseball history, he was ruled safe by umpire Don Denkinger, even though replays showed first baseman Jack Clark's toss to Worrell was in time. The Cardinals never recovered. Kansas City rallied for two runs to tie the series and crushed the Cards 11-0 in Game 7.

"No, I'm not bitter at Denkinger," Herzog told the AP years later. "He's a good guy, he knows he made a mistake, and he's a human being. It happened at an inopportune time but I do think they ought to have instant replay in the playoffs and World Series."
