ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fort Hays State fell behind 12-0 to start
the game and never got closer than eight and lost 79-63 to Missouri Western
State Thursday at the MWSU Fieldhouse. 

The Griffons (8-11, 4-4 MIAA, who came into the game as one
of the worst 3-point shooting teams&nbsp; in
the MIAA, hit their first five from beyond the arc and six of their first seven
in building a 17-point first half lead.

The Tigers (7-10, 1-8 MIAA) closed within nine late in the half
and were down 47-36 at halftime but MWSU outscored the Tigers 11-3 over the
first five minutes of the second half to push the lead to 19 and were up as
many as 23 with 8:41 to play.

Jared Vitztum and Jake Hutchings both scored 17 to lead the
Tigers. Vitztum added nine rebounds.

Slow start too much for Tigers to overcome at Missouri Western

the final two minutes of the second quarter and knocked off the 10th-ranked Fort
Hays State women 75-58 Thursday night at the MWSU Fieldhouse, ending the Tigers
nine-game win streak.

Kacey Kennett scored eight of Fort Hays State’s first nine
points then hit a 3-pointer late in the quarter to give the Tigers (15-3, 6-3
MIAA) a 14-10 lead after one. 

The Griffons opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take
a four point lead. The Tigers would tie the game 22-22 with 2:53 to play in the
quarter but trailed 27-23 at halftime.

Missouri Western State (14-3, 6-2 MIAA) pushed the lead to
18 over the first four minutes of the third. 

Cydney Bergman scored the next 12 points for the Tigers as
they closed the gap to 11 and trailed 52-41 after three quarters.

FHSU got as close as 10 early in the fourth but failed to
scored on their next two possessions which would have pulled them within single
figures.

The Griffons tough pressure defense held the Tigers to
31-percent shooting and 17 turnovers.

MWSU shot 56-percent and went 9-of-9 from the foul line
despite being one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the MIAA.

Missouri Western ends Tiger women's nine-game win streak

First quarter turnovers by Hays High resulted in a double digit Scott City lead by the end of the first quarter at the 35th Annual Orange &amp; Black Classic in Colby Thursday afternoon.&nbsp; Hays jumped out to a 3-0 and 5-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game.&nbsp;

Scott City then took advantage of seven Hays turnovers and went on an 18-0 run and grabbed a 21-5 lead.&nbsp; The Beavers never led by less than ten points rest of the game. The Indians cut a sixteen point deficit down to ten in the second quarter but missed a three pointer to bring the gap to single figures.&nbsp;

Scott City took a fourteen point lead into the second half and still led by thirteen when the Beavers went on a 19-3 run that went into the fourth quarter and led to a 56-35 win.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays was led by Aleyia Ruder who scored ten.&nbsp; The Indians drop to 2-7 on the year.&nbsp; #4-3A Scott City is now 8-1.&nbsp; Hays will face the losing team of Goodland and Highland Park at Colby High School at 3:00.

Jace Linenberger came off the bench for a game high 21 points which set a new career high for the sophomore.&nbsp; Hays opened the second half on a 11-0 run where Dylan Ruder grabbed a pair of baskets on his way to a second double-double this season at 10 points and 10 rebounds.&nbsp;

Hays doubled up Scott City on rebounds 38-19.&nbsp; Hays has won six in a row and is now 7-2 on the year.&nbsp; Scott City falls to 4-5.&nbsp; The Indians will play the winner of Goodland and Beloit on Friday at the Community Building at 4:45.

Hays opens tournament play in Colby with Scott City

FAYETTE, Iowa - The Fort Hays State wrestling team moved back into the NWCA Division II Top 25 poll thanks to senior <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5381">Brandon Ball</a>
 coming in ranked No. 2 at 141 pounds this week, released Wednesday 
(Jan. 22). The Tigers will return to action this weekend ranked 22nd in 
the nation.


After a 7-0 start to his season, Ball regained his hold on the No. 2 
spot in the 141-pound rankings. Ball was listed in the second slot in 
each of the first two rankings this season before falling out of the top
 12 in the last release.


Ball's position in the ranks handed the Tigers 16 points in the team 
poll, good for 22nd. Fort Hays State is just two points shy of the top 
20. Conference opponents in the latest poll include No. 3 
Nebraska-Kearney and No. 6 Lindenwood.


The Tigers will take their No. 22 ranking on the road this weekend when 
they travel to Kearney, Neb. for the Midwest Duals. FHSU will face off 
against Chadron State, who is receiving votes in this ranking, and No. 
23 Northern State.

The home team has dominated the series, with Missouri Western leading 15-8 in St. Joseph and the Tigers leading 19-5 in Hays. Missouri Western has won each of the last two meetings in St. Joseph, with the last Tiger road win coming on December 7, 2013 (67-53). Fort Hays State is 12-5 against Missouri Western under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=884">Tony Hobson</a>, including a 3-5 mark on the road.

The Tigers are 7-5 in the Joe under Hobson thanks to a 4-0 mark in neutral site contests.

Missouri Western is off to a 13-3 start to the season, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. The Griffons are one-half game behind the Tigers in the conference standings. Looking ahead, the Tigers have seven conference games remaining against teams currently with sub-.500 overall records, compared to just four against teams with winning records. The path ahead also includes a make-up non-conference game with Kansas Wesleyan in Hays this coming Monday (Jan. 27). Seven of the eight games the Tigers have played so far in conference have been against teams with above-.500 overall records.

FHSU men's basketball begins Missouri road swing Thursday at Missouri Western State

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;(AP) - The Big 12 has suspended four players from Kansas and Kansas State a combined 25 games for their roles in a melee that spilled off the court. 

The brawl erupted into a section of disabled seating in Allen Fieldhouse near the end of the third-ranked Jayhawks' win over the Wildcats. 

Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa was suspended indefinitely by Jayhawks coach Bill Self earlier Wednesday. He was given a 12-game suspension by the league office. LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;(AP) - The Big 12 has suspended four players from Kansas and Kansas State a combined 25 games for their roles in a melee that spilled off the court. The brawl erupted into a section of disabled seating in Allen Fieldhouse near the end of the third-ranked Jayhawks' win over the Wildcats. Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa was suspended indefinitely by Jayhawks coach Bill Self earlier Wednesday. He was given a 12-game suspension by the league office. His teammate, David McCormack, was suspended two games while Kansas State forward James Love received an eight-game suspension and Antonio Gordon a got three-game suspension.

 added another signee to his 2020-21 signing class in Kerrigan Rudolph. 
Rudolph wrapped up an impressive career at Goodland (Kan.) High School 
last fall, picking up her fourth medalist finish at the Kansas 3-2-1A 
State Tournament.


Rudolph placed in the top 10 four times at the state meet, finishing 
ninth as a freshman in 2016, third as a sophomore in 2017, second as a 
junior in 2018 and fourth as a senior in 2019. She helped the Cowgirls 
to an undefeated state championship in 2019, finishing in the top four 
at all nine meets through the fall. Rudolph was honored as an Elite (top
 12 in the state) athlete at The Topeka Capital-Journal's Best of Kansas
 Preps awards banquet.


She was a three-time league champion, winning the Great West Activities 
Conference meet as a freshman, junior and senior. Rudolph finished in 
the top four at the region meet all four years, including a runner-up 
finish as a sophomore.


Rudolph was a three-sport athlete with the Cowgirls throughout her high 
school tenure, playing basketball in the winter and running track and 
field in the spring. She also picked up a letter in trap shooting as a 
junior.


She was very involved outside of athletic competition, serving as the 
president of the Girls Athletic Association, participating in choir and 
theater, serving as a Junior Commission Officer and serving as a student
 mentor for junior high students.


"I am excited that Kerrigan made the decision to become a Tiger," said 
DeBoer. "Her competitive drive is evident by her participation in three 
sports throughout her high school career. I look forward to her bringing
 that same drive and work ethic with her to the next level."

The Kansas City Royals signed outfielder Alex Gordon to a $4 million contract for next season, giving the rebuilding club a veteran presence in what is expected to be a young lineup under new manager Mike Matheny.

The 35-year-old Gordon, a three-time All-Star, won his seventh Gold Glove last season to move within one of Frank White for the most in franchise history.

Tuesday's high school basketball results

HAYS – The TMP boys made six of their first three-point attempts
Tuesday and used a 14-0 first quarter run to beat the Trego Golden Eagles 66-49 in the first round of the Mid-Continent League tournament.

The Monarchs got out to a hot start in the first quarter.
Leading 5-4, TMP put together a 14-0 run to end the quarter to lead 19-4. Ryan
Stoecklein scored five points during the run.

Stoecklein added two more three-pointers to open the second
quarter as TMP extended the run to 20-3 and built a 25-7 lead. Trego briefly closed the deficit back to nine
before TMP took a 29-18 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half Trego closed the deficit to six, at 33-27
midway through the third quarter but TMP closed the quarter on a 12-5 run, capped
off by a Lucas Lang three-pointer.

Lang added a second straight three-pointer to start the fourth quarter
giving TMP a 48-32 lead.

Trego closed within 11 two different times in the fourth
quarter but could get no closer as the Monarchs earned the 66-49 win.

TMP’s Jackson Schulte finished with 21 points and Ryan
Stoecklein added 17.

Trego’s Carter Minson scored a team-high 17.

TMP improved to 8-1 with the win and they will take on Hill
City Friday in the second of two boys semifinals Friday in Plainville. 

TMP was
the only higher seed to win on the boys side Tuesday.

The seven-seeded Ringnecks upset two-seed Plainville 62-57 Tuesday.

On the other side of the bracket top-seeded Hoxie was upset
by the eight-seed Phillipsburg Panthers 42-40. Phillipsburg will play No. 5

FHSU women's basketball returns to top 10 of coaches poll

In late April 2019, the Kansas State High School Activities Association approved the formation of girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport for the first time.&nbsp; By late August, a vote of 65-2 by a board of school representatives put the wheels in motion for the 2019-20 school year to be the first official season.&nbsp;

Schools are not required to have girls wrestling if there is no interest.&nbsp; First-year Hays High wrestling coach Heath Meder began to see if any girls in Hays had interest.&nbsp; The answer he found out was a quick yes.&nbsp; Initially, 12 girls signed up to receive more information and 10 eventually started the season.

Currently, six of those are still active wrestlers including Sarah Zimmerman who as a freshman is ranked fifth at 109 pounds as of the Jan. 14 rankings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It has been a work in progress for coach Meder as the season has gone along. Singlets needed to be ordered but had to wait until a week into the season to see how many would be needed.&nbsp; Girls are not required to wrestle boys if they do not wish to.&nbsp; This is the first time wrestling for most of the girls so the coaching staff had to bring back the basics.

There have been some girls only tournaments this season. Most recently, Hays High hosted the Junior Prairie Classic. Traditionally, this tournament was for junior varsity wrestlers. This year, they decided to add an all level girls tournament to the equation. 340 wrestlers showed up last Saturday in Hays. Nearly 100 of them were girls.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Meder said some of his favorite moments so far in the new venture of girls wrestling comes from the joy the girls have competing.&nbsp; He also notes that some of the girls are the most aggressive wrestlers he coaches.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There will be separate girls regional tournaments that will lead to a separate state tourney.&nbsp; Currently, there are two regionals with classes 1A through 6A all in one division.&nbsp; Hays will be among the 79 schools in McPherson Feb. 14 and 15 trying to qualify individuals for the state tournament.&nbsp; The other tournament is in Paola and has 71 schools attending.&nbsp; The top four from each weight class at each regional will qualify for state.&nbsp;

The State Tournament will be in Salina on Thursday, Feb. 27.&nbsp; The tournament is one day in advance of the boys state tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER Hays PostIn late April 2019, the Kansas State High School Activities Association approved the formation of girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport for the first time.&nbsp; By late August, a vote of 65-2 by a board of school representatives put the wheels in motion for the 2019-20 school year to be the first official season.&nbsp;Schools are not required to have girls wrestling if there is no interest.&nbsp; First-year Hays High wrestling coach Heath Meder began to see if any girls in Hays had interest.&nbsp; The answer he found out was a quick yes.&nbsp; Initially, 12 girls signed up to receive more information and 10 eventually started the season.Currently, six of those are still active wrestlers including Sarah Zimmerman who as a freshman is ranked fifth at 109 pounds as of the Jan. 14 rankings.&nbsp;&nbsp;It has been a work in progress for coach Meder as the season has gone along. Singlets needed to be ordered but had to wait until a week into the season to see how many would be needed.&nbsp; Girls are not required to wrestle boys if they do not wish to.&nbsp; This is the first time wrestling for most of the girls so the coaching staff had to bring back the basics.<div><iframe width="100%" height="300" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" allow="autoplay" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/747217321&color=%23ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true"></iframe></div>There have been some girls only tournaments this season. Most recently, Hays High hosted the Junior Prairie Classic. Traditionally, this tournament was for junior varsity wrestlers. This year, they decided to add an all level girls tournament to the equation. 340 wrestlers showed up last Saturday in Hays. WAKEENEY – Trego used a 7-0 to build a first half lead over TMP and then&nbsp;outscored the TMP Lady Monarchs 15-3 to
open the second half on their way to a 63-48-win Monday in the first round of
the Mid-Continent League Tournament.

Trego rushed out to a 6-2 first quarter lead before TMP
scored eight straight, capped off by back-to-back three pointers from Kyleigh
Allen and Sophia Balthazor to put the Lady Monarchs up 10-6.

After leading by four twice in the first quarter TMP led
17-15 at the end of the first quarter on the second Balthazor three of the
first half.

The Monarchs held a two-point lead for much of the second
quarter and were up 23-21 on an Emilee Lane layup but Trego responded with a
7-0 run to take a 28-23 lead. A lead they were never relinquish.

After trialing by as much as six in the second quarter TMP
closed within two at 34-32 on a pair of Balthazor free throws but a Tillie Malinowski
layup at the buzzer gave Trego the 36-32 lead at halftime.

Trego’s Lili Shubert and Libby Frost sparked a 15-3 run to
start the third quarter as they built a 51-35 lead. Shubert scored nine of her
game-high 27 points during the run. Libby Frost scored six points to open the
third quarter.

In the fourth quarter TMP outscored Trego 9-4 to cut the
Trego led back to 10 but Trego made five free throws in the final minutes to
secure the 63-48 win.

TMP had four players scored in double-figures led by the 13 points
of Kyleigh Allen. Sophia Balthazor scored a career-high 12. Emilee Lane and Megan
Hamel chipped in 10 each.

Trego’s Lili Shubert finished with 27 points and Libby Frost
added 12.

Trego improved to 10-0 and TMP dropped to 4-6.

The Golden Eagles will take on Smith Center Friday in the
championship semifinals. The Lady Red downed Ellis Monday 59-48.

TMP will take on Ellis Thursday at the Stockton Grade
School.

In the other two first round games Hoxie held off Norton
49-43 and Phillipsburg beat Oakley 61-49. 

Phillipsburg will take on Hoxie in Friday’s semifinals while
Oakley plays Norton Thursday at Stockton.

Baylor leaped over Gonzaga and into the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll to give the Top 25 its seventh team on top this season. 

That matches the record set in 1983 for the most No. 1s in the history of the poll that dates to the 1948-49 season. Baylor received 33 first-place votes from the 65-member media panel and had 1,591 points. 

Gonzaga received 31 first-place votes for 1,588 points. Kansas, undefeated San Diego State and Florida State replaced Duke, Auburn and Butler in the top five after those three schools each lost a pair of games last week.

Tennessee led 17-7 until Mahomes led two touchdown drives over the last 4:03 of the first half, beginning with his 20-yard scoring strike to Tyreek Hill. The NFL's reigning MVP followed that with a long TD run in which he tip-toed along the left sideline and squirmed through a wrap-around tackle attempt near the end zone.

Cooper</a>&nbsp;(285) each earned titles.

Ball blitzed through the 141-pound bracket with a bye, a fall in 1:02, and a 7-0 decision before receiving an injury default win in the championship. Jones made efficient work of the 184-pound bracket with a 16-0 tech fall, a pin in 0:33, and an 8-3 decision over Nate Panagakis of Newman in the final. Cooper mirrored Jones' win types with a 17-0 tech fall, a pin in 1:28, and then a 9-4 decision over Christian Arriola of Central Oklahoma in the final.

Tiger wrestling has three champions at Jet Invitational

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State made a late rally but missed
two three-pointers in the closing seconds and lost 75-72 to Washburn in front
of 2,575 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers (7-9, 1-7 MIAA) had a couple of early two-point
leads but after a 12-0 run by Washburn (9-8, 4-3 MIAA) would never lead again.
After tying the game a couple of times late in the first half, the Ichabods got
three 3-pointers from Tyler Geiman and closed on a 10-2 run to lead 34-26 at
halftime.

Washburn pushed the lead to 14 with 13:14 to play but the Tigers
battled back with a 22-11 run over the next eight and-a-half minutes to pull within
three on an Aaron Nicholson 3-pointer with 5:39 to play.

After the Ichabods pushed the lead to seven with 2:14 left,
the Tigers made one final surge. Devin Davis hit a shot in the lane to close
within give. After two missed free throws from Washburn’s Drew Maschoff, Jake
Hutchings scored following an offensive rebound to cut the lead to 73-70.

Following a Washburn turnover, Aaron Nicholson scored in the
lane to close the gap to one. Maschoff was fouled and hit two free throws with
15 seconds to play to push the lead back to three. Nicholson missed on a three
then after grabbing the offensive rebounds, Jake Hutchings missed a three at
the horn.

Jared Vitztum led the Tigers with 21 points and 10 rebounds
before leaving the game midway through the second half with an ankle injury.
Nicholson added 17 and Alvin Thompson 11.

The Tigers shot 48-percent and were 8-of-22 from beyond the
arc and 16-of-20 from the free throw line.

Washburn, who was held to a season-low in points Thursday at
Nebraska-Kearney, shot 58-percent in the second half and 53-percent for the
game and 11-of-23 from beyond the arc.
