Fort Hays State Men's Basketball looks to build on its first MIAA win of the season when it hosts Washburn on Saturday (Jan. 18) at 4 pm. The Tigers are looking to end a four-game losing streak to the Ichabods, which dates back to the 2017-18 season. FHSU enters at 7-8 overall, 1-6 in the MIAA, while WU is 8-7 overall, 3-3 in the MIAA.

The Tigers snapped a four-game losing string on Wednesday night with a 56-46 win over Emporia State. The 46 points by Emporia State was the lowest by a Tiger opponent in an MIAA contest since allowing 42 to Missouri Western in 2017-18. The win also snapped an 0-6 start to conference play this season for the Tigers.

Washburn was an NCAA Tournament participant each of the last two years, but has seen a sluggish start this year at 8-7 overall. The Ichabods are coming off a 79-51 loss at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. Washburn's conference wins so far this year have been over Pittsburg State, Emporia State, and Missouri Western.

Fort Hays State's last win over Washburn occurred on February 4 of the 2016-17 season in Topeka. FHSU claimed the earlier meeting in Hays that season as well. FHSU and Washburn are meeting just one time in the regular season for a second-straight year. Washburn won the only meeting last year, 80-73, in Topeka.

Fort Hays State (14-2, 5-2 MIAA) has won each of its last eight games, the second-longest active streak in the MIAA and 12th-longest in Division II. Washburn (8-7, 2-4 MIAA) is coming off a road loss to Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, 69-53.

Washburn holds a 47-35 lead in the all-time series, including a slim 20-18 lead in games played in Hays. The Tigers have controlled the series of late, winning&nbsp;eight of the last nine meetings.&nbsp;The Tigers are 10-12 against Washburn under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=884">Tony Hobson</a>, including a 6-4 mark inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Washburn enters the weekend 8-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Ichabods are 1-3 in road games this season. They average 70.4 points per game while allowing 67.2 points each night. Three Ichabods average in double figures in scoring, led by Reagan Phelan's 13.3 points per contest. Hunter Bentley adds 12.5 ppg while leading the team with 7.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 0.8 blocks per outing. Phelan leads the team and ranks second in the MIAA with 5.0 assists each game.

Hays High and Garden City waited out the weather by pushing their start times back an hour and were able to get their games in on Friday night.&nbsp;

A strong start for Hays gave way to a long field goal drought in a 54-40 loss in Garden City.&nbsp; Hays jumped out a 9-0 lead and led by nine points three times in the first half.&nbsp; The final lead of nine at 19-10 came just in front of going 7:20 without a field goal that lasted into the second quarter.

Hays held onto the lead by one point into halftime and never trailed in the first two quarters.&nbsp; Garden City jumped in front for the first time at 24-21 with 6:15 left in the third quarter and never looked back.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Indians fell behind by ten in the third quarter&nbsp; but forced their way back into the game at 37-32 going to the final quarter.&nbsp; The Indians drew within four points with 7:31 left in the game but was outscored 17-7 rest of the way.

Garden City buried five of eight second half three point attempts after shooting just one of nine in the first half.&nbsp; Hays High shot five of twelve in the first quarter but made only nine field goals over the remaining three quarters.

Hays was led in scoring by Tasiah Nunnery with ten, her fifth double figure game of the year. Garden City was led by freshman Amaya Gallegos as she scores 15 points, seven in the third quarter alone.

Hays falls to 2-6 and 1-2 in conference play.&nbsp; Garden City is now 6-3 and 2-1 in the WAC.

Hays matched their entire first half total scoring in the third quarter on their way to a 50-36 win against Garden City.&nbsp; The game was tied four times in the first quarter including the end of the first at nine points a piece.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Garden City built a seven point lead in the second quarter but failed to build on it in the final two minutes.&nbsp; Hays scored five points in that time to bring the contest to 19-17 at halftime.&nbsp;

The Indians held Garden City scoreless for seven minutes of the third and fourth quarter and used the opportunity to go on a 12-0 run and grab the lead for good at 36-27.&nbsp; Over the third and fourth quarter Garden City scored just three field goals and went 12:34 in between field goals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays outscored Garden City 33-17 in the second half while shooting 65%.&nbsp; The Indians improve to 6-2 on the year and 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.&nbsp; Garden City is now 4-5 and 0-3 in conference play.

Hays was led by the double-double of Dalyn Schwarz at 13 points and 10 rebounds.&nbsp; TJ Nunnery scored 11 and Jason Krannawitter added a career high 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays is on the road next week at the 35th Annual Orange and Black Classic in Colby.&nbsp; Both teams open the tournament on Thursday with Scott City.&nbsp; The girls play at 3:00 at the Community Building followed by the boys.

🎥  Hays High basketball at Garden City

David Dayne Glass, who served as President and CEO of Walmart Inc. from 1988 to 2000 when he led the company through extraordinary growth, died January 9, according to the Glass family. He was 84.

He died of complications associated with pneumonia, according to a media release from the Glass family.

Most recently Glass was owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Royals, a team he helped lead to two consecutive World Series appearances and in 2015 brought the World Championship trophy to the fans of Kansas City. Glass and his family sold the Royals late last year.

A native of Mountain View, MO, Glass served in the U.S. Army after graduating high school from 1954-56. After leaving the Army Glass earned a business degree from Southwest Missouri State University, now named Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO.

Upon graduation Glass began his retail career in 1960 with Crank Drug Company in Springfield. He left Crank in 1968 after the company was sold and worked for two other companies, including serving as General Manager of Consumer Markets in Springfield. In 1976, Glass was recruited by Walmart founder Sam Walton to become Walmart's Chief Financial Officer.

Glass was named President and CEO of Walmart in 1988 and served in that role for 12 years. During his term in that role, Glass guided the company through a period of extraordinary growth both in terms of revenues and expansion including retail acquisitions, expansions including new retail formats and significant international expansion. Specifically, under Glass' leadership, Walmart:

Glass led a team of managers who adopted new and innovative technologies to streamline operations and improve customer service. This included the development of automated distribution centers, linked by computers to Walmart headquarters, stores and suppliers, which enabled the company to expand beyond a regional retailer to become an international retail leader.

Glass was also a mentor and leader to many who are now leading successful business careers and lives of their own.

Rob Walton, former Walmart Chairman and eldest son of Sam Walton, said the following:

"When we lost my Dad, David provided a steady, visionary hand the company needed to lead it forward. He did so with a deep sense of humility while maintaining the values and principles Dad founded the company on. More than anyone beyond Sam Walton, David Glass is responsible for making Walmart the company it is today. On behalf of the entire Walton family, I want to express our appreciation for David as a leader and as a friend. He will be deeply missed."

Added Doug McMillon, current Walmart President and CEO:

"Due to his authentic humility, we think David Glass may be the most under-appreciated CEO in the history of business. The choices he made and the results of the company reflect his wisdom, dedication and servant leadership. We will miss him immensely and are eternally grateful."

Glass was honored with numerous retail and business awards over the years, including being named "most admired CEO" in 1993 by Fortune Magazine, and inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame in 2000 and into the Arkansas Business Hall of Fame.

A lifelong baseball fan starting as a child when he followed the St. Louis Cardinals, Glass was appointed interim Chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Royals in 1993 upon the death of then owner Ewing Kauffman. Glass and his family acquired the Royals in 2000 and it was at that time that he began his second career, a career in baseball, at age 64.

During his ownership of the Royals, Glass was an active member in Major League Baseball and served on key committees within the Major League organization. Glass was the Chairman of the Board of MLB Advanced Media, a member of Major League Baseball's Executive Council and a member of MLB Enterprise and Finance Committee.

Glass was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2000, where he served as a member of the Pension and Audit Committees.

Dayton Moore, Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager for the Royals, said the following:

"Mr. Glass loved this game, this team and our city with all his heart. He cared deeply for our fans and for the future of baseball. But above all, Mr. Glass placed an emphasis on putting family first which is what he stressed to our entire organization. We are forever grateful for his humble and supportive leadership, and we are beyond blessed that we were a part of his incredible life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his very special family."

However, while the list of business and sports achievements and honors are impressive indeed, those who knew Glass best knew that his number one priority throughout his entire life was his love and commitment to his family. Glass and his wife, Ruth, have three children, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Glass and his family have been supportive of numerous charitable causes and organizations over the years including Missouri State University. In fact the Missouri State College of Business is named David D. Glass Hall in honor of his dedication to the university.

 </figure>David Dayne Glass, who served as President and CEO of Walmart Inc. from 1988 to 2000 when he led the company through extraordinary growth, died January 9, according to the Glass family. He was 84.He died of complications associated with pneumonia, according to a media release from the Glass family.Most recently Glass was owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Royals, a team he helped lead to two consecutive World Series appearances and in 2015 brought the World Championship trophy to the fans of Kansas City. Glass and his family sold the Royals late last year.A native of Mountain View, MO, Glass served in the U.S. Army after graduating high school from 1954-56. After leaving the Army Glass earned a business degree from Southwest Missouri State University, now named Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO.Upon graduation Glass began his retail career in 1960 with Crank Drug Company in Springfield. He left Crank in 1968 after the company was sold and worked for two other companies, including serving as General Manager of Consumer Markets in Springfield. In 1976, Glass was recruited by Walmart founder Sam Walton to become Walmart's Chief Financial Officer.Glass was named President and CEO of Walmart in 1988 and served in that role for 12 years. During his term in that role, Glass guided the company through a period of extraordinary growth both in terms of revenues and expansion including retail acquisitions, expansions including new retail formats and significant international expansion. Specifically, under Glass' leadership, Walmart:<ol>
 <li>Increased annual revenues from $16 billion in the fiscal year ending January 31, 1988, to approximately $165 billion in revenues in the fiscal year ending January 31, 2000.</li><li>Launched Walmart Supercenters and expanded Sam's Club.</li><li>Expanded international operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Mexico, Puerto Rico and United Kingdom.</li>
 </ol>Glass led a team of managers who adopted new and innovative technologies to streamline operations and improve customer service. Former owner of the Royals David Glass dies at age 84

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team was ranked third 
in the 2020 MIAA Wrestling Coaches Dual Poll, announced Wednesday (Jan. 
15) by the league office. The Tigers picked up nine points in the 
balloting process.


Defending champion Nebraska-Kearney topped the poll with three 
first-place votes. The Lopers edged out Central Oklahoma by just one 
point, who picked up two top votes to rank second. Newman is just one 
point behind the Tigers in fourth, with Central Missouri occupying the 
No. 5 spot in the poll.


With the conference down to five teams, the Tigers will hit the mat 
against conference opponents just four times this season. FHSU&nbsp;will host
 the top two teams at home, wrestling Central Oklahoma on January 31 and
 Nebraska-Kearney on February 13.


Fort Hays State finished fourth in the league last season, going 2-3 in 
MIAA duals a year ago. The Tigers are off to a 1-0 start this season 
after besting Central Missouri Wednesday evening.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Quinton Rose scored 19 points and Temple used a strong defensive performance to upset No. 16 Wichita State 65-53.

Jake Forrester and Monty Scott each chipped in 11 points for the Owls (10-6, 2-3 American Athletic Conference, who on Wednesday night snapped a three-game losing streak while defeating a ranked opponent for the 13th consecutive seasons. 

Shockers leading scorer Erik Stevenson went scoreless, missing eight shots and five from 3-point range. Tyson Etienne, who entered tops in the conference with 37 3-pointers made, also was scoreless and missed three 3-point tries.

Rose leads Temple to upset of No. 16 Wichita State

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State used some solid defense to hold Emporia State to their fewest points of the season and picked up their first conference while ending a four-game losing streak with a 56-46 victory Wednesday night at Gross Coliseum. 

Fort Hays State (7-8, 1-6 MIAA) closed the first half on a 5-0
run to tie the game 22-22 at halftime then scored the first 10 points of the
second half to go up 32-22 with 15:48 to play.

The Hornets (9-6, 3-3 MIAA) pulled within seven on two
different occasions but back-to-back step-back threes from Nyjee Wright pushed
the lead to 13 with 3:43 to play. 

Jared Vitztum led the Tigers with 17 points and eight
rebounds. Wright went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and scored all of his 11
points in the second half.

The Tigers won despite 34-percent shooting but held the
Hornets to 33-percent shooting and a season low in points.

The Tigers move to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference action, while the Mules dip to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in MIAA competition. It was the 12th-straight time the Tigers have defeated the Mules in dual competition.

Tiger wrestling wins MIAA opener

HAYS, Kan. – The 13th-ranked Fort Hays State women shot
59-percent from the floor including 11-of-20 from beyond the arc and cruised to
an 87-55 rout of No. 15 Emporia State Wednesday evening in front of 2,305 at Gross Coliseum. 

It’s
the largest margin of victory for the Tigers (14-2, 5-2 MIAA) over an Emporia State team as they run their win streak to eight straight&nbsp; and five straight
in conference play. It also snapped the Hornets (12-3, 5-1 MIAA) nine-game win streak.

The Tigers worst shooting quarter was the first when they
went 8-for-16 and led by seven. The Hornets were within five when freshman
Allison McFarren scored the final eight points of a 15-3 run to close out the
second quarter which pushed their lead to 17. 

McFarren finished 5-of-6 from the floor and went 3-for-3
from beyond the arc and scored a career-best 15. Kacey Kennett led six Tigers
in double-figures with 16. Taylor Rolfs added 12 while Belle Barbieri and Jaden
Hobbs both added 10.

The Tiger defense held ESU to 30-percent shooting and a
season low in points.

Colorado State transfer Mollie Mounsey hit seven 3-pointers
and led the Hornets with a season-high 23 points.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball looks to get on track at home on Wednesday (Jan. 15) when it hosts Emporia State at 7:30 pm. The Tigers (6-8, 0-6 MIAA) are looking to snap a four-game losing skid and pick up their first win in MIAA play this season. Emporia State brings in a record of 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are looking for a split in the season series with Emporia State after falling 69-66 in Emporia back in December. The Hornets are the only MIAA opponent the Tigers have held to less than 50 percent shooting from the field this season. ESU shot 43.1 percent from the field in the first meeting, which is the lowest shot by an MIAA opponent of the Tigers this year. FHSU held opponents to 40 percent or less from the field in all six wins so far this year.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5313">Aaron Nicholson</a>&nbsp;averaged a team-best 15 points per game in the two road contests for the Tigers last week in Oklahoma. Edwards, No. 23 Texas Tech hold off Kansas State

Hays High continued Western Athletic Conference play on Tuesday as they hosted Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays held Great Bend scoreless for the first 7:55 of the game.&nbsp; The Indians though were only able to build a 7-0 lead during that stretch.&nbsp; The Panthers first points came from a three pointer with five seconds on the first quarter clock.

That three sparked a 20-4 run that built a nine point lead for the Panthers with four minutes to go in the second quarter.&nbsp; Trailing 20-11, Hays held Great Bend scoreless for the next 3:59 seconds.&nbsp; However Hays only made up three points of the deficit from the free throw line during that stretch.&nbsp; Great Bend nailed a three at the buzzer for another nine point lead at 23-14.

Hays led for only 2.3 seconds in the second half.&nbsp; Fortunately for the Indians it was the final seconds of the game.&nbsp; Great Bend led by by no less than five for the entire third quarter and entered the fourth up 31-26.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Indians led Great Bend without a fourth quarter field goal.&nbsp; The Panthers though made five of seven free throws over a seven minute stretch to remain up by two with :56 left.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays stayed in the game with ten straight second half points from Aleyia Ruder who went on to tie a career high with 16 points.&nbsp;

The final moments game down to free throws.&nbsp; Great Bend went 0-4 in the final 22 seconds.&nbsp; The first two misses with a two point lead.&nbsp; Hays made just one of four chances with under ten seconds remaining to close the gap down to 36-35.&nbsp; The Panthers then missed two more free throws with 3.5 seconds left and fouled Tasiah Nunnery on the second miss just after rebounding the ball.

Nunnery, who is the best free throw shooter on the team, made two free throws wrapped around a Great Bend timeout.&nbsp; The Panthers last chance heave came after the final buzzer.

Ruder led the way with 16 points and grabbed a career high eight rebounds.&nbsp; Isabel Robben also tied a career high with eight boards.&nbsp; Nunnery led the game with ten rebounds with also tied a career high.

Hays snaps a five game losing streak and is 2-5 on the year and is now 1-1 in the WAC.&nbsp; Great Bend falls to 2-7 and 0-2.

Hays and Great Bend got after each other from the opening tip.&nbsp; The lead changed hands four times in the first five minutes and was tied twice more.&nbsp;

The Indians used a 9-0 run on four straight field goal makes for an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.&nbsp; The Indians never trailed in the second quarter and led by as many as eight at one point 33-25.&nbsp; Great Bend closed the gap down to six by half time at 35-29.

The Indians led the entire third quarter by at least three points and 47-42 heading to the final eight minutes.

The Panthers used an 11-2 run to take their first second half lead on back to back field goals from Alex Schremmer.&nbsp; Hays trailed 56-52 with 3:30 before setting out on a 10-3 run.&nbsp; Jace Linenberger made one of two free throws to start the run.&nbsp; Dylan Ruder rebounded the miss on the second attempt and scored.&nbsp; Carson Kieffer scored a layup, Dylan Ruder added a second basket in the run and Jason Krannawitter finished the run with a step back three pointer for a 62-59 lead with one minute remaining.

Hays would not trail for the remainder of the game.&nbsp; Great Bend buried a pair of free throws to cut the Hays lead down to 62-61 with forty-one seconds left.&nbsp; Kieffer was fouled moments later and missed the front end of a one and one opportunity.&nbsp; Ruder however was there to clean up the miss and put the ball back up and in for a 64-61 lead with thirty seconds remaining.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend had one last chance after getting fouled after a three point attempt. They needed to make a free throw and miss the last for a chance to tie with seven tenths of a second left.&nbsp; The second free throw however never touched rim and allowed Hays High to inbound and win 64-62.

Great Bend's Alex Schremmer scored 38 including seven three pointers.&nbsp; TJ Nunnery scored a career high 18 while Dylan Ruder added 13 and Jace Linenberger scored 12.&nbsp; Ruder scored 11 of his points in the fourth quarter

Hays improves to 5-2 on the season and has won four in a row.&nbsp; They are 2-0 in the WAC.&nbsp; Great Bend falls to 5-4 and 1-1.

Hays is on the road to Garden City on Friday.

Hays sweeps Great Bend in two close games

The TMP boys earned their seventh straight victory Tuesday
night in WaKeeney while the TMP girls dropped their second straight MCL game as
the Monarchs split a doubleheader with the Trego Golden Eagles.

Girls: Trego 62, TMP 40 The Trego Golden Eagles used a pair of 9-0 runs in the first
quarter to build a double-digit lead Tuesday on their way to a 62-40 win over
the TMP Lady Monarchs.

Trego’s Lili Shubert scored the games first nine points and
11 straight for Trego as they built an 11-4 first quarter.

After their second 9-0 run in the first quarter Trego led
20-4. Trego led 23-9 after the first quarter. TMP senior Adell Riedel suffered
an apparent knee injury midway through the quarter and did not return.

TMP ended the first quarter and began the second quarter on
an 8-3 run to cut the Trego led to 23-12 but TMP would never get closer as Trego
cruised to a 62-40 win.

Trego’s Lili Shubert and Libby Frost each scored 22 for the
Golden Eagles who improved to 8-0 and 2-0 in the MCL.

The Monarchs’ Kyleigh Allen tied her career-high with 14.
TMP drops to 3-5 and 2-2 in the MCL.

Boys: TMP 65, Trego 44 The TMP used an 11-1 run to start the second half as they
pulled away from the Trego Golden Eagles for a 65-44 win Tuesday in WaKeeney.

The Monarchs and the Golden Eagles traded baskets early in
the game before Trego built a 9-5 first quarter lead. 

Down four late in the first quarter TMP’s Carson Jacobs
scored six points in-a-row to tie the game at the end of the first half at 15.
He then added a dunk to start the second quarter that gave TMP the 17-15 lead.

The Jacobs dunk sparked a 12-3 TMP run as they took a 27-18
lead. 

Trego was able to close within three, at 31-28 at the break.


TMP’s Lucas Lang started the second half with a three-pointer
leading TMP to an 11-1 run giving TMP a 42-29 lead.

Trego was able to close the deficit back to nine on one occasion
in the third quarter but the Monarchs stretched the lead to 19 with a 10-0 run.

Trego got no closer as the Monarchs earned the 65-44 win.

Carson Jacobs led the Monarchs with 18 points. Jackson Schulte
added 15 and Lucas Lang finished with 11.

Trego’s Charlie Russell record a new career-high 18 points.

TMP improves to 7-1 and 4-0 in the MCL while Trego drops to
5-3 and 0-2 in the MCL.

TMP basketball splits with Trego



After playing more than 28 seasons of Division II basketball without being ranked 13th in the country, the Fort Hays State women's basketball team now occupies that spot in the WBCA&nbsp;Coaches Poll for the second week in a row, announced Tuesday.

The Tigers (13-2, 4-2 MIAA) picked up three wins since the last poll was released, holding off Pittsburg State at home before earning a pair of road victories over Northeastern State and Rogers State. FHSU's point total in the balloting process rose three points this week, up to 310.

Emporia State, the lone other MIAA representative in the polls, moved up one spot to No. 15 in the coaches poll while holding on to the No. 16 spot in the media ranks.

The Tigers and Lady Hornets will face off in a top-15 battle Wednesday evening inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m.

FHSU women's basketball maintains No. 13 ranking

Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has made the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his fifth attempt. 

Tagliabue and former New York Giants general manager George Young made it to Canton, Ohio, as contributors. 

Ex-Dallas Cowboys safety Cliff Harris and former Cleveland receiver Mac Speedie completed the centennial class. 

The class of 10 senior candidates, three contributors and two coaches are part of the hall's celebration of the NFL's 100th season. 

Also going into the hall are Harold Carmichael, Donnie Shell, Steve Sabol, Bobby Dillon, Jim Covert, Winston Hill, Duke Slater, Ed Sprinkle, Alex Karras, Bill Cowher and Jimmy Johnson.

The modern-era Class of 2020 will be announced the day before Super Bowl LIV.&nbsp;
