Tuesday's high school basketball scores



The Fort Hays State women's basketball team will return to play inside Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend as the 16th-ranked team in the WBCA DII Coaches Poll. The latest poll, released Tuesday (Jan. 28, saw the Tigers move six spots after a 1-1 road trip last week.

Fort Hays State is 4-1 all-time when ranked 16th in the coaches poll, including a perfect 4-0 mark this season. The Tigers defeated Harding, No. 6 Saint Anselm, Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State earlier this season after coming in 16th on the Dec. 17th poll.

The Tigers are the top-ranked team in the MIAA, joined this week by 22nd-ranked Central Missouri while Emporia State represents the league in the receiving votes category.

The Tigers return to the floor Saturday (Feb. 1) when they host rival Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m.

FHSU women's basketball ranked 16th in latest coaches poll

BROOKFIELD, Ill. – Senior placekicker&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5067">Dante Brown</a>&nbsp;repeated as the Don Hansen Football Committee National Special Teams Player of the Year for 2019. Along with the honor, Brown is an All-America First Team selection at placekicker by the committee for a second-straight year. Brown received All-America honors from five organizations for the 2019 season, four being first-team selections.

Brown is the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year for a second-straight season. In 2019, he averaged 1.72 field goals per game, succeeding on 19-of-23 attempts. He added in a school-record 52 PAT makes for 109 points on the season. He racked up 232 points over two years, making 47 field goals and 91 PAT tries as the Tigers' kicker.

In 2018, Brown had one of the most successful kicking seasons in NCAA Division II history, converting 28 field goals out of 33 attempts. His 28 field goals in 2018 were second most for a season in Division II history, only two shy of the record 30 set by Jeff Glas from the University of North Dakota in 2005. Brown broke the MIAA record of 25 made by Simon Mathieson in 2015, but Mathieson set that record in 15 games played compared to just 12 for Brown. Brown also broke Mathieson's MIAA record for attempts in a season. His 123 points in 2018 set a new FHSU single-season scoring record.

Even with his impressive accolades at kicker, Brown was also an All-America selection at punter in both 2017 and 2018 for Fort Hays State. He served as both the team's kicker and punter in 2018, earning All-MIAA First Team accolades at both positions. He averaged 41.4 yards per punt in 2018 with 14 attempts going for more than 50 yards. He tied the school record for longest punt with an 84-yard boot. In 2017, he served solely as the team's punter and averaged 43.5 yards per attempt, which included 21 attempts going for more than 50 yards. Over the two years in a punting role, he averaged 42.4 yards per attempt, second best in FHSU history.

Brown was a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Placekicker Award for a second straight year in 2019. The award is given annually to a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA placekicker that excels on the football field and in the community. Luis Aguilar of Northern Arizona University (FCS) received the award this year. Brown was one of three kickers from NCAA Division II to make the finalist list.

FHSU's Brown named Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Freshman Christian Braun had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 3 Kansas to a 65-50 victory over Oklahoma State. 

Isaiah Moss added 13 points and Devon Dotson had 11 for the Jayhawks, who led wire to wire. Kansas has won five in a row, including a 74-68 triumph over Tennessee on Saturday. 

It was the Jayhawks’ second game since a brawl with rival Kansas State that led to two players being suspended.

The Tigers (8-11) used runs of 8-0, 13-3, and 22-2 in the first
half to build a 26-point lead late in the first half. Kansas Wesleyan (13-8) used
a 10-2 run to pull within 18 early in the second half but would get no closer.
FHSU scored 18 straight capped by an Alvin Thompson fast break dunk to push
their lead to 41.

Jared Vitztum went 7-for-7 from the floor which included
three 3-pointers and led the Tigers with 19 points and seven rebounds. His only
missed shot was free throw. Vitztum also recorded four of the Tigers nine
blocked shots.

Calvin Harrington scored 12 points, Jake Hutchings and Perry
Carroll both added 11 and Thompson finished with 10.

Miles Koehler was the only Coyote to reach double-figures
with 10.

yards with 861. He was also a threat rushing the ball with 128 yards, 
while also recording 106 kick return yards. Hazlett had 12 total 
touchdowns (9 receiving, 3 rushing) to lead the team in 2019. He even 
threw the ball one time for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Hazlett became the
 eighth receiver in FHSU history to reach 2,000 receiving yards, going 
past the mark in the final game of the season. He finished with 2,038 at
 FHSU, which accounted for more than two-thirds of his 2,738 all-purpose
 yards. He owns the FHSU record for career receptions with 184.


Fuller put up big numbers in his first full year as a starter for the 
Tigers at quarterback. The MIAA featured three of the top five passers 
in the nation during the regular season, Fuller being one of the three 
by ranking fifth in the nation with 3,344 yards. He finished seventh 
nationally after completion of all NCAA playoff games. Fuller broke the 
FHSU record for passing touchdowns in a season with 35, previously set 
by Shawn Behr in 1995 with 34, and he ranked fourth in the nation in 
passing touchdowns by the end of the regular season before ultimately 
landing sixth on the list. He ranked 12th nationally in completion percentage (258-of-400) at 64.5 percent.

by Shawn Behr in 1995 with 34, and he ranked fourth in the nation in 
passing touchdowns by the end of the regular season before ultimately 
landing sixth on the list. He ranked 12th nationally in completion percentage (258-of-400) at 64.5 percent.

Three from FHSU football picked for All-Super Region honors

MIAMI (AP) — Kansas City waited 50 years to get back to a Super Bowl. And then the Chiefs had to wait a few extra minutes once they got to Miami.

It took workers at Miami International Airport about three attempts to get one of the rolling staircases that the Chiefs would use to deplane properly lined up with the front door of their chartered jet. The delay was brief, and coach Andy Reid and the rest of the Chiefs’ delegation to make their way into the hangar for the short walk to waiting buses.

A handful of local politicians and officials were at the airport to greet the teams, as loud hip-hop music blared through the maintenance hangar that was being used for the arrivals.

No players or coaches spoke to reporters inside the hangar. The first media session for the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers — who arrived a couple hours after the Chiefs did on Sunday — is Monday night, when the NFL has Super Bowl Opening Night at Marlins Park.

Super Bowl 54 is next Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Even as football enters its biggest week, basketball was on the teams' minds. The teams both paid tribute Sunday on social media to Kobe Bryant, whose shocking death in a helicopter crash earlier Sunday reverberated around the world.

“A legend gone too soon," the 49ers wrote.

Added Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark, on Twitter: “I'm devastated, RIP to my idol, Bean, 8, 24, the Goat, the Black Mamba. Wow." And Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland called it a “sad day in America."

A handful of volunteers greeted players, coaches and staff as they made their way down the stairs. Everyone was handed a floral baseball cap, and many players held their phones out to shoot video of the moment they arrived at the Super Bowl.

A few of the 49ers danced once they deplaned, in time with the music coming from a nearby DJ. Even the flight attendants on the Chiefs’ flight were celebrating the moment— they gathered at the top of the stairs for a group photo once their passengers deplaned, and then a few of them pulled out their phones for some pictures of players as well.

Chiefs, 49ers arrive in Miami for Super Bowl week

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs outscored Phillipsburg
10-4 to start the game and never trailed the rest of the way as they claimed
the 2020 Mid-Continent League tournament championship Saturday with a 59-46 win
over the Panthers.

TMP had lost the last two MCL title games to the Panthers and tt's the first MCL tournament title for the Monarchs since 2016.

Phillipsburg opened the game with a 4-2 lead but TMP
answered with a, 8-0 run capped off by back-to-back Ryan Stoecklein field goals
to put the Monarchs up 10-4. They extended their lead to seven, at 16-9 before
taking a 16-11 lead into the second quarter.

The Panthers trimmed TMP’s lead to 16-13 to open the second
quarter when Jackson Schulte hit his first of five three-pointers on the night
to put TMP up 19-13. A Lucas Lang field goal midway through the second quarter
gave TMP their largest lead of the first half at 26-17.

Phillipsburg finished the first half with a flurry of field
goals and trimmed the TMP lead to just 28-22.

The Monarchs extended their lead to 10 at 39-29 to open the third
quarter when Schulte hit back-to-back threes and Stoecklein added his second three
of the game. The lead grew to 12 at 44-32 on a Lucas Lang three-pointer. TMP
led 48-38 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter led by as many as 15 on their way to
the 59-46 win.

Jackson Schulte led three Monarchs in double-figures with 15 and Carson Jacobs finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Ty Sides for Phillipsburg led all scorers with 19 points.

TMP improves 10-1 with their 10th straight win. Phillipsburg
drops to 8-5 on the season.

TMP boys claim MCL tournament title

Hays High could not overcome a season high 21 turnovers as their seven game winning streak was snapped by Pine Creek High School in Colby on Saturday.

Hays led by as many as seven in the second quarter while Pine Creek led by eight in the third quarter.&nbsp; Each time the teams canceled the lead.&nbsp; A 14-3 run by the Indians in the second half erased an eight point deficit and put them up 40-37 with 4:26 remaining.&nbsp; The lead switched hands three more times in the final three minutes.&nbsp;

The Indians final lead came with 2:44 left on a pair of free throws.&nbsp; Pine Creek made nine of their final eleven free throws to keep Hays their lead and a 50-46 victory.&nbsp; The Eagles had started the game four of ten from the line before going eleven of fourteen in the fourth quarter.

Dalyn Schwarz and TJ Nunnery each scored sixteen points.&nbsp; Hays fall to 8-3 on the year and #10-5A Pine Creek improves to 15-2.

Carson Kieffer, Dylan Ruder and Jace Linenberger were named to the All-Tournament team.&nbsp; Ruder was also honored on the All-Academic Team.&nbsp; Linenberger was named the tournament's "Off-The-Bench" award as well.&nbsp; &nbsp;Jason Krannawitter was given the Gary Garrettson Sportsmanship Award.

The Indians are on the road on January 31st in Salina to take on the Central Mustangs.&nbsp;

Hays falls in championship game in Colby

MARYVILLE, Mo. – No. 2 Northwest Missouri State shot 61-percent in
the first half including 10-of-19 from 3-point range to build a 28-point
halftime lead and beat Fort Hays State 83-57 Saturday afternoon at Bearcat
Arena. 

It ties the Tigers (7-11, 1-9 MIAA) worst loss to the Bearcats (18-1, 8-1
MIAA) matching a 26-point setback in 2007. The Bearcats have won 10 straight and
56 of their last 57 games and ran their home winning streak to 28 games, the second
longest current streak in Division II.

The Tigers got off to a good start. Calvin Harrington, who made his first start of the season, hit a 3-pointer to tie the game 5-5 then
Jared Vitztum scored near the rim to pull FHSU with 13-11 at the first media
timeout but Northwest scored the next 11 points and were never threatened
again.



FHSU outscored NWMSU 38-36 in the second half, but the first half damage was too much to overcome. The Tigers brought the Bearcat lead down to 21 by opening the second half on a 12-5 run, but that was as close as they could get after halftime. The Tigers shot 53.8 percent from the field and 60 percent beyond the 3-point line after the break.

Alvin Thompson scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half. Jared Vitztum added 11 along with a team-high seven rebounds.

Sophomore Trevor Hudgins recorded a triple-doublefor Northwest scoring 10 points along with a career-high 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Second-ranked Bearcats too much for Tiger men



KEARNEY, Neb. - 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling turned in a 1-2 record at the eighth annual Midwest Duals Saturday (Jan. 25, defeating Northwest Kansas Tech before a pair of narrow defeats against Chadron State and No. 23 Northern State. The Tigers' dual record now sits at 4-4 on the year.

The Tigers opened the day with a big 34-16 win over Northwest Kansas Tech thanks in large part to three Maverick forfeits. Fort Hays State came away victorious in four of the seven matches thanks to wins from Verhaeghe, Jones,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5388">Jordan Davis</a>&nbsp;and Cooper.

Fort Hays State fell behind 10-0 against Chadron State and could never quite come back, falling 25-22. Ball got the Tigers on the board with a dominating 15-0 tech fall before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5396">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;helped close the gap to 10-8 with an 8-4 decision. Verhaeghe (MD 20-8) and Jones (MD 12-1) both picked up major decision wins for the Tigers, but not before the Eagles ran away with wins at 157 and 165 pounds. Cooper finished things off with a first-period pin, but it wasn't quite enough to complete the comeback.

The Tigers found themselves in another early hole against No. 23 Northern State, trailing 11-0 after two bouts before falling 24-19. The Black and Gold came away with wins in five of the next eight matchups, but another tech fall and another pin gave the Wolves enough of an edge to seal the victory. Ball picked up another big win at 141 pounds, earning four team points with a 16-4 major decision.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5543">Tristan Porsch</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers stay in it with a 7-5 win at 157 pounds before Verhaeghe (Dec 3-0) picked up his third win of the day at 174 pounds. Jones followed with his third victory of the morning before Cooper tallied his third pin of the day.

Fort Hays State returns home to continue conference action on Friday (Jan. 31) when the Tigers host No. 6 Central Oklahoma. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

No. 22 FHSU wrestling picks up one win at Midwest Duals

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Fort Hays State outscored Northwest
Missouri State 17-6 over the first six-plus minutes of the third quarter to
turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a six-point lead and beat the Bearcats
70-59 Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Arena. 

The 10th-ranked Tigers (16-3, 7-3 MIAA) overcame 32-percent shooting in the first half by going 12-of-24 in the second half and 21-of-22
from the free throw line after halftime.

FHSU used a 9-0 first quarter run to turn a five-point
deficit into a four-point lead but Northwest (8-10, 3-6 MIAA) responded with a
17-5 run to go up eight with 2:19 to play in the second quarter. The Bearcats,
who have lost five straight, led 32-25 at halftime.

The Tigers built their biggest lead of the game at 56-45
with 7:42 to play in the fourth quarter but the Bearcats closed the gap to five
with 1:28 left. FHSU scored the final six points of the game from the free
throw line to push the lead back to 11.

Jaden Hobbs scored 17 of her game-high 22-points in the
second half including 10-of-11 from the free throw line.

Kacey Kennett went 10-for-10 from the foul line and scored
16. It's the&nbsp; most makes without a miss for a Tiger in nearly five years. Taylor Rolfs added 15 points.

FHSU didn’t make a 3-pointer in the final three quarters and
finished 2-of-17 from beyond the arc.

A 10-2 run to finish the fourth quarter propelled Hays High to a fourth place finish at the 35th Annual Orange and Black Classic on Saturday. Hays trailed 27-23 with 6:05 left in the game before starting their run on a pair of Tasiah Nunnery free throws.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Isabel Robben scored on back to back steals with the second giving Hays lead at 29-27.&nbsp; Valley Center did tie the game at on their next field goal but never took over the lead as Hays made five of their final nine free throws to win 34-29.

Hays never trailed in the first quarter and then only led for the forty-five seconds of the second quarter.&nbsp; The Indians trailed at half time 18-16 and were tied at 21 going to the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

Isabel Robben led the way with her first career double-double at 15 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays wins back to back games for the first time this season while improving to 4-7.&nbsp; Valley Center drops to 3-8.

Hays girls claim fourth place in Colby

PLAINVILLE - The TMP Lady Monarchs could not overcome a rough shooting afternoon as the Norton Lady Jays beat TMP 47-32 in the seventh place game of the Mid-Continent League tournament Saturday in Plainville.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the first quarter with Norton building a 13-8 lead after one.

Into the second quarter TMP opened the quarter on a 11-4 run and three straight Kassidi Yost free throws gave TMP a 19-17 lead. TMP led by two 21-19 after two Emilee Lane free throws before Norton’s Taylie Hartwell hit a three pointer late in the first half to put Norton up 22-21. They would never trail again.

TMP was just 1-12 from the floor in the third quarter as Norton outscored the Monarchs 10-2 in the quarter and led by nine 32-23.

The Monarchs closed the deficit to seven two different times to open the fourth quarter but could get no closer as Norton pulled away for the 47-32 win.

Emilee Lane finished with a game-high and career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;

Tessa Hauser led Norton 14 points and 10 rebounds.

TMP drops to 4-8 on the season and will take on Abilene next Friday.

Norton improved to 6-5 and will take on Trego on Tuesday.

The Bearcats are 4-3 at home this season, including losses in each of their last two home games. They rank 14th in the MIAA in scoring offense, averaging 60.0 points per night. But the defense sits in fourth in the league, allowing just 55.9 points per game. The Bearcats lead the league and rank sixth in Division II in free-throw percentage, knocking down 80.1 percent from the stripe. They rank third in the league in blocked shots, swatting 4.1 attempts each night. Kendey Eaton leads the team with 14.6 points per contest, while Mia Stillman leads the team in both rebounds (4.5 rpg) and steals (1.4 spg). Ellie Horn's 1.2 blocks per night ranks fifth in the MIAA.

The weather cooperated for this installment of the Area Game of the Week as the Palco Roosters paid a visit to the Logan Trojans.

The night started crisply at 6 o'clock with the girls game. The first few minutes of the first quarter saw a tight game start to develop. However, some timely shots and big 3-pointers by senior Harlee Voss helped Logan build a 24-11 lead by halftime. Voss had already accumulated 14 points by the half.

The second half was a back and forth battle, but Palco struggled to ever pull closer than 9.&nbsp; Despite several furious comeback attempts, Logan held out for a solid 46-33 win.

Harlee Voss finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Senior Khloee Braun pitched in 11 points and 6 rebounds as well. Senior Camryn Greving was a beast on the boards, ripping down 15 rebounds.&nbsp; Logan gets to an even .500 with the win. their record stands at 5-5.&nbsp;

Palco was led in scoring by senior Riley Wells, who had 11 points and 6 rebounds. They fall to 4-5 on the year with the loss.

The night progressed quickly into the boys action. Palco opened the game with a 3 by Junior Micah Thompson. That was the only lead Palco would ever have. Logan went on a 17-0 run and never looked back, building a 44-13 lead by halftime.&nbsp;

It was more of the same after the break, as Logan won the 3rd quarter 27-2. The fourth quarter was greatly shortened due to running-clock rules, ending the game at 80-15 in favor of the hometown Trojans.

Senior Ian Sparks paced Logan with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Dylan Van Laeys was also impressive, netting a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Nathaniel Cruz chipped in 16 points and sophomore Ty Kats also had 16. Sophomore Connor Knipp&nbsp; led Palco with 6 points and 5 rebounds.&nbsp;

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian boys used a 9-0 fourth quarter
to rally from down three on their way to a 49-45 win over Hill City Friday to
advance to the MCL tournament championship game Saturday.

The Monarchs opened the game on an 8-1 run and led by eight at
12-4 on three straight Carson Jacobs field goals. Jacobs scored eight of his 15
points in the first quarter as TMP took a 15-8 lead at the end of the first
quarter.

Back-to-back Jace Wentling field goals gave TMP their
largest lead of the first half a 19-9. Hill City trimmed the Moanrch lead to
four on two different occasions in the second quarter, the final time at 25-21
at halftime.

Hill City outscored TMP 12-5 in the third quarter as they
took a 33-30 lead. 

The Ringnecks led 36-32 to open the fourth quarter when TMP
put together a 9-0 run to retake a 41-36 lead. Lucas Lang hit four free throws
and Jackson Schulte added five points during the run.
