MANHATTAN- The Hoxie Indians advanced to the state tournament with a convincing 81-66 win over the Plainville Cardinals last week in the Ellis 2A Sub-State Championship. The Indians 21-2 record was good enough for the 3 seed at the state tournament in Manhattan. They'd be facing off against the 6 seed Garden Plains Owls. The Owls won the Sedan Sub-State, holding a record of 18-5 on the year.&nbsp;

Hoxie started the game strong, scoring the first 7 points of the contest. However, the Owls steadily crawled back into the game, snatching a 14-13.

The Owls owned the first portion of the second quarter, using a 14-4 run to take a 28-17 lead. Hoxie scored the last 5 points of the half to cut the lead to 28-22 heading into the break.

The Indians slowly chipped away at the Owl lead in the the third. Freshamn Brady Jones knocked down a 3 at the end of the quarter to give Hoxie their first second half lead 39-38. That would be the score heading to the fourth.&nbsp;

The Indians played a hard fourth, pushing the lead to 47-40 with under four minutes to go. However, the Owls stormed all the way back, finishing the game on 10-0 run. That put score 50-47 in favor of the Owls. Hoxie's late attempts to take back the lead would fall short, resulting in a 50-47 Garden Plain win.

Junior Harlan Obioha finished the game with 21 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 4 assists. Senior Parker Jones chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The Indians finished the season 21-3. Jones is the only senior they are losing that played significant minutes.&nbsp;

Garden Plain improved to 19-5 on the year. They would have played Seabury Academy in the semi-finals, had the tournament not been canceled due to the Corona Virus outbreak. Accordingly, the 2019-20 season is now over for all teams.

TOPEKA — The Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced they are canceling the state basketball tournaments at the conclusion of quarterfinal round play Thursday due to concerns regarding COVID-19.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team could not tame the bats of second-ranked Central Missouri Thursday, dropping both ends of the doubleheader. The Mules took advantage of the stiff wind blowing out at Larks Park, slugging 13 home runs on the day, including an MIAA-record-tying nine homers in game one.

The Tigers move to 11-13 overall and 1-7 in MIAA play, while the Mules are now 20-3 on the year and 8-0 in league action.

Tiger baseball falls twice to No. 2 Central Missouri



CLAREMORE, Okla. – Fort Hays State Softball dropped a pair of MIAA contests to 17th-ranked Rogers State on Thursday. The Tigers fell by a score of 2-0 in each game, moving to 15-13 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. Rogers State improved to 21-8 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Rogers State 2, Fort Hays State 0

Fort Hays State struggled to get offense generated against Rogers State starter Andrea Morales, who improved to 15-2 overall on the season with the shutout win. Morales gave up just a pair of singles in separate innings, while striking out 13 Tigers and walking just two.

Rogers State plated its runs in the third and fourth innings on RBI doubles by Sabrina Anguiano and Abigail Taylor. FHSU starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run, while striking out three in her six-inning complete-game effort. Nelson moved to 7-5 on the season.

:KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The Big 12 Conference has announced the immediate suspension of all Conference championships until April 15, resulting in the cancellation of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships in Kansas City, along with its upcoming gymnastics and equestrian championships.&nbsp; Conducting future Big 12 championships this season will be evaluated and determined by April 15.

“After consultation with our Board of Directors it was decided that cancelling these championships was in the best interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.&nbsp;

Details will be forthcoming on full refunds of ticket purchases for these championships.

Hays High overcame a double digit deficit for the second time in three post season games winning 46-43 over Highland Park on Wednesday at the 5A State Tournament.&nbsp;

The Scots got to the rim early in the game posting a 15-5 lead through eight minutes.&nbsp; The Indians broke a 7:15 scoring drought early in the second quarter but then fell behind 18-7 on the following possession.&nbsp; Hays was able to close the gap down to seven by halftime 22-15.

Hays had two opportunities to tie or take the lead midway through the third quarter but failed to take advantage and fell behind by seven at 34-27.&nbsp; Hays rattled of six straight points to end the quarter and trail by one heading to the fourth.

The Indians missed a three to take the lead to start the fourth quarter.&nbsp; Two minutes later TJ Nunnery connected on an inbound play for a three that gave Hays their first edge in the contest at 36-35.&nbsp; Leading 37-36 Hays turned the ball over on three of their next four possessions and missed a free throw on the other.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Highland Park took the lead at 38-37 but never led again.&nbsp; Carson Kieffer scored seven of the team's last nine points keeping the Indians from ever falling behind.&nbsp; Two Nunnery free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining gave Hays a 46-43 lead as Highland Park could not get a three to fall at the buzzer.

Carson Kieffer led the Indians with a career high 19 points.&nbsp; TJ Nunnery added 14 and Dalyn Schwarz put in 10 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays improves to 17-6 on the year and #5 Highland Park ends the year at 15-8.&nbsp; Wednesday night's opponent marked the ninth state ranked team Hays has played in their last fifteen contests.

Hays will play Basehor-Linwood in the semi-finals on Friday.

FHSU Baseball Series with No. 2 Central Missouri to Start Thursday

Fort Hays State Softball begins a 20-game road stretch on Thursday and Friday (Mar. 12-13) by heading to Oklahoma for a pair of MIAA doubleheaders. The Tigers take on No. 17 ranked Rogers State in Claremore on Thursday at 2 pm before heading to Tahlequah to face Northeastern State at 11 am on Friday. The games have been moved up a day earlier due to a threat of inclement weather.

Like Fort Hays State, both Rogers State and Northeastern State are out to 2-2 starts in MIAA play. Northeastern State split with both Central Oklahoma and Newman, while Rogers State swept Newman but lost twice to Central Oklahoma. Fort Hays State dropped a pair to Central Missouri in Hays last weekend before bouncing back in a sweep of Lincoln.

Rogers State jumped out to a 17-4 start to the year, but lost four of six contests last week and now sits at 19-8. Outside of the two losses to Central Oklahoma last weekend, the Hillcats dropped a pair to nationally ranked Texas A&amp;M-Commerce earlier in the week. Northeastern State went 5-5 in its last 10 contests, but sits at 14-8 overall.

Since a doubleheader sweep of Kansas Wesleyan in mid-February, the Tigers have posted a record of 7-7. The Tigers are 15-11 overall for the season.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5339">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;leads FHSU in batting average at .365, while starting every game at second base this season. Wednesday State Basketball Tournament Scores

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas center Udoka Azubuike is The Associated Press Big 12 player of the year. 

The 7-footer is the only player in the conference averaging a double-double. 

Azubuike and his Jayhawks teammate Devon Dotson are the only unanimous picks for the AP All-Big 12 first team released Tuesday. 

Baylor sophomore guard Jared Butler, TCU senior guard Desmond Bane and Oklahoma senior forward Kristian Doolittle are the other first-team selections.

Azubuike named Associated Press Big 12 player of the year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State hadn’t won consecutive games since opening the season in November with four straight wins.

The Wildcats have now put together back-to-back wins after beating Iowa State on Saturday, and TCU 53-49 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.

Cartier Diarra scored 13 points, Mike McGuirl added eight points that included two free throws to ice the game for No. 10 seed Kansas State (11-21, which scored the final eight points of the game.

RJ Nembhard scored 19 points to lead the way for seventh-seeded TCU (16-16). Desmond Bane chipped in 16 points.

Nembhard missed a go-ahead 3 with five seconds remaining. “All you can do is get the best shot you can and I thought it was a pretty good shot,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said.

McGuirl followed with a pair of free throws with two seconds left.

“We get to fight another day,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. “We finally found a way to win a game like this.”

David Sloan added nine points and Xavier Sneed had eight for Kansas State, which shot 21 of 54 (39%) from the field while the Horned Frogs were 20-of-50 shooting (40%). The Wildcats also had a 36-27 rebounding advantage, and held the lead for 35 minutes.

The Horned Frogs got their first lead of the game, 46-45 with five minutes left, on a floater by Nembhard. Kevin Samuel’s free throw and jumper stretched TCU’s advantage to 49-45.

But the Horned Frogs didn’t score in the final three minutes of the game and finished with 14 turnovers. “We made bad decisions with the ball and we’ve been a high-turnover team all season,” Dixon said.

Sneed, McGuirl and Mawien made a basket apiece and the Wildcats regained the lead 51-49 with 1:19 to play.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby announced 30 minutes before the start of the Iowa State-Oklahoma State game in the opener that the league would not allow fans at any games after Wednesday night. The only people in attendance for the rest of the tournament will be teams, family members and essential staff. Each team will get 125 tickets to hand out on a game-by-game basis.

Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said cancelling games might be the best for everyone involved in the country.

“This is scary and I’m old,” Weber said. “I’m in the group where people die and I have a grandson coming any day now.”

TCU: The Horned Frogs started slowly, but caught fire in the second half (13-of-28 shooting from the field that included four 3-pointers). It wasn’t enough though as their season came to an end.

Kansas State: Coming off a 79-63 win against Iowa State on Saturday, the Wildcats used that momentum to beat TCU. But in order to win the next one against second-ranked Baylor, they’ll have to play much better.

Currently all tournament sites are proceeding as scheduled with fans.  We encourage everyone attending a state basketball tournament to continue to take the proper precautions in preventing illness transmission including proper and frequent hand washing with soap or sanitizer, covering the face when coughing or sneezing and keeping your hands away from your face.  Anyone who is feeling sick or suffers from a significant health issue should stay home.

INDIANAPOLIS - On Tuesday afternoon (March 11, 2020, NCAA President Mark Emmert released the following statement on attendance for all upcoming NCAA Championship events.

The NCAA President's statement encompasses all NCAA levels (I, II, and III, effective immediately. This includes all winter championship events. Fort Hays State University is competing in three of the championships this weekend, which includes the Central Regional of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship in Warrensburg, Mo., the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., and the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

NCAA limits attendance at FHSU postseason events

MIAMI (AP) — The NBA has suspended its season “until further notice" after a Utah Jazz player tested positive Wednesday for the coronavirus, a move that came only hours after the majority of the league's owners were leaning toward playing games without fans in arenas.

Now there will be no games at all, at least for the time being. A person with knowledge of the situation said the Jazz player who tested positive was center Rudy Gobert. MANHATTAN- The Trego Golden Eagles finished fourth at last year's 2A State Tournament. That meant this year's trip to Manhattan was about unfinished business.&nbsp;

The Golden Eagles 22-1 record was good enough for the 2 seed in the State Tournament. Their first game came against the 7 seed Bennington Bulldogs. Both teams came into the game giving up around 30 points per game defensively, so the match-up had the potential to be a low-scoring affair.

The Golden Eagles came out fighting in the first quarter, pushing their lead to as much as four. However, a 6-0 run pushed the momentum back in the Bulldogs favor, leading us to an 11 all tie.

Trego once again built a 3 point lead in the second, however, another 6-0 run gave Bennington a 3 point lead with under a minute until half. Two quick Trego buckets gave the Golden Eagles a 23-22 lead at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive affair for the Golden Eagles. Trego held the Bulldogs to just 6 points and used an 11-0 run to take a 34-28 lead in the the final act.

Trego somehow increased the defensive intensity even further, allowing just&nbsp; 3 fourth quarter points. The defense, combined with some timely free throws, led to a 45-31 Golden Eagle win.

Junior Lilli Shubert led all scorers with 13 points. She also had the high in rebounds with 7. Senior Gracie Pfannenstiel chipped in 11 points.&nbsp;

The Golden Eagles, who are now 23-1, are on to the semifinals for the second year in a row. They play the winner of tonight's Garden Plain-Sterling match-up, which is a rematch of last year's state championship game.&nbsp;

Hays Wrestling Club qualifies 27 for Kan. championships

Offensive linemen don't normally get much attention.&nbsp; Tuesday morning the light shined on one of Hays High's as Luke Fletcher signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Butler County Community College.&nbsp;

Fletcher was a two year starter at Hays High and two-time second team Western Athletic Conference selection.&nbsp; He earned the honor as a left tackle his junior season and left guard his senior year.&nbsp; The 6'4" 245 pound senior is projected to play more at the tight end spot in college.

Fletcher was part of an offensive line that paved the way for over 6000 yards of offense the last two seasons.&nbsp; Hays High also advanced past week nine of the season for one of the few times in program history with a victory on the road over Goddard-Eisenhower.&nbsp; The game remains one of the Fletcher's favorite memories.

Coach Tony Crough credits Luke Fletcher for helping set the foundation for the future of the Hays High program and helping change the culture.
