KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Super Bowl champion Chiefs saw something they liked in the Giants.

Right tackle Mike Remmers signed a one-year contract Saturday with the Chiefs, following special teams gunner Antonio Hamilton’s lead of going from the Giants to the Chiefs, according to agent Brett Tessler.

The exact terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Remmers started 14 games last season as a one-year stopgap. The two ex-Giants are the only players signed by the Chiefs in the first week of free agency.

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado (AP) — The Denver Broncos have agreed to a two-year deal with former Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon. 

The Broncos are getting a running back who has rushed for 36 touchdowns over the last four seasons and scored 11 more on receptions. That's an ideal fit for new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

FHSU basketball signs Colorado point guard

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas senior Udoka Azubuike and sophomore Devon Dotson were each named Associated Press All-America Second Team, the AP announced Friday. The Associated Press All-America Team was selected and voted on by a media panel of 65.

Dayton breakout star Obi Toppin is the lone unanimous first-team choice to The Associated Press men's college basketball All-America team. Toppin is joined on the first team by Iowa's Luka Garza, Marquette's Markus Howard, Myles Powell of Seton Hall and Payton Pritchard of Oregon. Toppin is Dayton's first first-team AP All-American after averaging 20 points and seven rebounds per game.

Azubuike and Dotson gives Kansas an Associated Press All-America selection each of the last five seasons. Last year, Dedric Lawson was a third-team selection, while Devonte’ Graham was a first-team choice in 2018. Frank Mason III (first) and Josh Jackson (third) were named in 2017 with Mason being named 2017 Associated Press Player of the Year. Perry Ellis was a second-team selection in 2016. In head coach Bill Self’s 17 seasons at Kansas, there have been 18 Jayhawks named to the Associated Press All-America teams.

Azubuike, a senior from Delta, Nigeria, led Division I in field goal percentage at 74.8%, which helped his career percentage of 74.4% break the all-time Division I field goal percentage record of UCF’s Tacko Fall (74.0%). Azubuike led the Big 12 in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and double-doubles (15) and was second in the conference for blocked shots at 2.6 per game. A unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection who was named Big 12 Player of the Year, Azubuike was the only player in the conference to average a double-double (13.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg).

Dotson led the Big 12 in scoring at 18.1 ppg, steals (2.1) and free throws made (142). The Charlotte, N.C., sophomore guard ranked among the Big 12 leaders in 20-point games (second at 9, field goal percentage (second at 46.8, free throw percentage (fifth at 83.0, assists (fifth at 4.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (fifth at 1.7). Dotson became just the fifth Jayhawk to lead the Big 12 in scoring joining Drew Gooden in 2002, Wayne Simien in 2005, Frank Mason III in 2017 and Dedric Lawson in 2019. Flacco sustained a neck injury last season and missed the final two months of the season. He was eventually replaced by rookie Drew Lock. 

Earlier this week the Broncos agreed to terms with new backup quarterback Jeff Driskel. 

Cutting ties with Flacco means the Broncos take a $13 million salary cap hit but it also frees up $10 million for the team to spend in free agency.

Twin bill? Doubleheaders may be possibility to make up games

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The cash-strapped Kansas City Chiefs were quiet on the first day of NFL free agency with their biggest move Wednesday a restructuring of defensive end Frank Clark's contract in an effort to alleviate some of their financial misery.

Similar moves could be made in the coming days, potentially for wide receiver Sammy Watkins and offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif as the Super Bowl champions try to free up the resources to bolster their defense in free agency and sign star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to what could be a record-setting extension.

The Chiefs also have to decide what to do with Chris Jones, who was given the franchise tag earlier this week and would need to be offered a one-year deal worth at least $16,126,000. The problem is that number is almost untenable for Kansas City, which means general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid have to decide whether to reach a long-term deal with him — something they failed to do last offseason — or attempt to trade him to a team with more cap space.

The trade would be akin to what the Seahawks did with Clark, who was given the franchise tag and then dealt to the Chiefs for a pair of draft picks. Veach proceeded to sign him to a $105.5 million, five-year contract extension.

“You're going to have to find, really, where a team is, right? Because you talk about a tag-and-trade, you're talking about draft quantity and money, and the team has to be in a position it makes sense for them,” Veach said. “It was a unique setup last year and certainly we were happy to get that done and ultimately win the Super Bowl.”

Watkins starred during the Chiefs' championship victory over San Francisco, and the club would love to have him back given they expect to lose wide receiver Demarcus Robinson in free agency. But he also carries a prohibitive $21 million hit against the salary cap next season, so Watkins' deal will likely be restructured if he isn't released.

“Sammy is a guy like Chris that we'll have dialogue with,” Veach said. “There's different scenarios and options that will play out with him. He's a guy we do want back. These are good problems to have. You win a Super Bowl, you have a lot of good players. We'll talk about the landscape of where we are. What's the landscape for us and how can we make it work?”

The only deal the Chiefs have reached in free agency so far is a two-year contract with backup quarterback Chad Henne, who missed most of last season with a broken ankle. The Chiefs elected to bring him back as the second-string QB over Matt Moore, who was signed when Henne went down and wound up leading them to a pair of wins.

If the Chiefs manage to free up some salary cap space, expect them to target the best cornerbacks still available. They lost Kendall Fuller, Morris Claiborne and Bashaud Breeland to free agency, leaving them perilously thin at the position.

The Chiefs also could address that problem through the draft, though their selections will come at the end of each round.

“I get excited (about the draft) because Brett and his guys do such a good job, you know you're going to get a good player,” Reid said. “I'm OK with it being 32. We're OK there. We get a player, get a good player that can help us — it doesn't have to be any particular position. It has to be someone who can come in and help you, whether it's this year or down the road.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas has finished the season No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll, receiving 63 of 65 first-place votes from a national media panel. Gonzaga was second and Dayton third with Florida State and Baylor rounding out the top five. 

It's the fourth time since the inception of the men's poll for the 1946-47 season that the Jayhawks finished on top. 

The AP poll is typically released before the NCAA Tournament settles the national champion. The tournament was canceled this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Fort Hays State Athletic Department has announced that Tiger Club has been canceled for the remainder of the spring semester.

ATLANTA – Kansas senior center Udoka Azubuike has been named
one of five finalists for the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy, recognizing the
most outstanding men’s college basketball player, the Atlanta Tipoff Club
announced Tuesday.


Azubuike is one of three senior finalists along with Myles Powell (Seton Hall)
and Payton Pritchard (Oregon). Junior Luka Garza (Iowa) and sophomore Obi
Toppin (Dayton) round out the Naismith Trophy finalists. Azubuike is vying to
be the third player from Kansas to bring home the award, joining former
Jayhawks’ winners Danny Manning (1988) and Frank Mason III (2017).


Azubuike, from Delta, Nigeria, led Division I in field goal percentage at
74.8%, which helped his career percentage of 74.4% break the all-time Division
I field goal percentage record of UCF’s Tacko Fall (74.0%). Azubuike led the
Big 12 in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and double-doubles (15) and was second in the
conference for blocked shots at 2.6 per game. A unanimous All-Big 12 First Team
selection who was named Big 12 Player of the Year, Azubuike was the only player
in the conference to average a double-double (13.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg).


Top-ranked Kansas went 17-1 in conference play, the most league wins in Big 12
history, and 28-3 overall.

KU's Azubuike named a Naismith Trophy finalist

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– For the second time in program history, the Kansas men’s basketball team has finished the season No. 1 in the USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll as the Jayhawks were top-ranked in the final poll of the 2019-20 campaign. KU was also the top-ranked team following its 2008 NCAA National Championship.

Traditionally, the Coaches’ Poll is released following the NCAA Tournament but with this year’s global pandemic and the event being canceled, the poll was released March 16. Kansas received 29 of a possible 32 first-place votes and outdistanced No. 2 Gonzaga, 795-760, in the cumulative votes.

The Coaches’ Poll began in 1989-90 and Kansas has been ranked in 562 polls, including 318 under head coach Bill Self. KU has been in the poll each of the last 228 consecutive weeks which is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

Kansas’ No. 1 ranking marks the 66th&nbsp;time the Jayhawks have been ranked atop in the Coaches’ Poll, including 35 under Self. KU was ranked No. 1 the final four weeks, five times total, of the 2019-20 season.

Jayhawks finish No. 1 in Coaches’ Poll

LOUISVILLE, KY. (AP) — The Kentucky Derby is being postponed from May to September because of growing concern about the coronavirus pandemic, according to a published report. 

The Courier-Journal of Louisville cited unidentified sources close to the race saying Churchill Downs will postpone the Derby from May 2 to Sept. 5. That would make it the first time in 75 years that the race won't be run on the first Saturday in May. 

A formal announcement by the racetrack will be made Tuesday. The last time the Derby wasn't held on the first Saturday in May was in 1945.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“All possible scenarios that would have supported a spring sports season were seriously considered by multiple NAIA governance groups,” said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. “However, the growing state of emergency due to COVID-19, as well as the Center for Disease Control’s recommendation yesterday to limit gatherings to fewer than 50 people for eight weeks, meant we could not in good conscience move forward with the spring sports season and championships.”

&nbsp;In an effort to provide relief, no spring sport student-athlete will be charged a season of competition. Any spring sport student-athlete who was enrolled full-time in 2020 will be awarded two additional semester terms of attendance or the equivalent.

&nbsp;The NAIA is continuing to address outstanding questions related to these unprecedented changes and will share new information as it becomes available.

Effective Monday, March 16, all spring sports and activities are suspended through Sunday, March 22. This includes cancellation of all practices and competitions for this week. This prohibition is consistent with KSDE and governmental guidance and may be extended, should conditions warrant. Please note spring sports team members are prohibited from club or outside team participation and practice during this period. Not only would such outside participation be contrary to handbook rule, it would be contrary to the very reason activities are cancelled during the time we seek to mitigate potential transfer of the contagion.

KSHSAA shuts down spring sports and activities for one week

The Hays High boys basketball team had four players named to the All-Western Athletic Conference team. Senior Dylan Ruder and junior Dalyn Schwarz were named to the first team. Junior guard TJ Nunnery was named to the second team and sophomore guard Carson Kieffer was named honorable mention.

Sophomore Aleyia Ruder was the only Indian named to the girls All-WAC team. Ruder was named to the second team.

KSHSAA releases statement concerning springs sports and activities

INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA has released a statement regarding spring sports athletes in Division II. Those athletes who had their seasons canceled to to the Coronavirus outbreak&nbsp; will be granted one more year of eligibility.&nbsp;

Today, the Division II Administrative Committee implemented a recruiting dead period in all sports at least until April 15. The committee provided flexibility for schools to assist student athletes with travel, in addition to the already permitted housing and meals. The committee granted an aditional season of eligiblity to athletes in spring sports, and waived sports sponsorship requirements for schools canceling spring seasons.

not be held over three weeks because of concerns about the coronavirus, college
sports officials toyed with a plan to hold a 16-team event to crown a champion
in one long weekend.

he started to consider ways of condensing the tournament Wednesday night after
the NBA announced one of its players tested positive for the virus and the
league suspended its season. 

He hoped the men's games could be played in Atlanta, with
the committee choosing the top 16 teams in the country to participate.

MANHATTAN- The Hoxie Indians advanced to the state tournament with a convincing 81-66 win over the Plainville Cardinals last week in the Ellis 2A Sub-State Championship. The Indians 21-2 record was good enough for the 3 seed at the state tournament in Manhattan. They'd be facing off against the 6 seed Garden Plains Owls. The Owls won the Sedan Sub-State, holding a record of 18-5 on the year.&nbsp;

Hoxie started the game strong, scoring the first 7 points of the contest. However, the Owls steadily crawled back into the game, snatching a 14-13.

The Owls owned the first portion of the second quarter, using a 14-4 run to take a 28-17 lead. Hoxie scored the last 5 points of the half to cut the lead to 28-22 heading into the break.

The Indians slowly chipped away at the Owl lead in the the third. Freshamn Brady Jones knocked down a 3 at the end of the quarter to give Hoxie their first second half lead 39-38. That would be the score heading to the fourth.&nbsp;

The Indians played a hard fourth, pushing the lead to 47-40 with under four minutes to go. However, the Owls stormed all the way back, finishing the game on 10-0 run. That put score 50-47 in favor of the Owls. Hoxie's late attempts to take back the lead would fall short, resulting in a 50-47 Garden Plain win.

Junior Harlan Obioha finished the game with 21 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 4 assists. Senior Parker Jones chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The Indians finished the season 21-3. Jones is the only senior they are losing that played significant minutes.&nbsp;

Garden Plain improved to 19-5 on the year. They would have played Seabury Academy in the semi-finals, had the tournament not been canceled due to the Corona Virus outbreak. Accordingly, the 2019-20 season is now over for all teams.

TOPEKA — The Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced they are canceling the state basketball tournaments at the conclusion of quarterfinal round play Thursday due to concerns regarding COVID-19.

The following statement is on the KSHSAA website.

After the conclusion of the quarterfinal round, the 2020 KSHSAA State Basketball Tournament will be canceled. Given the escalating concerns regarding COVID-19, the best decision for the safety of the student-athletes and spectators was to cancel the remainder of this championship tournament. The KSHSAA regrets the lost opportunity for teams and players that have worked to achieve their goals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The move comes after the NCAA announced earlier in the day that they were canceling their men's and women's basketball tournament as well as all spring sports.

Hays High was scheduled to play Friday evening in the semi-final round.
