GARDEN CITY - Hays High jumped out a three touchdown lead on Friday night in Garden City by scoring on three of their first drives. The Indians scored on an 8 play 91 yard drive, 1 play 40 yard drive and 12 play 59 yard drive to take the 21-0 lead with 7:28 left in the second quarter.

Hays forced a three and out on the next defensive series but could not take advantage of a short field. The Indians picked up a dead ball fifteen yard penalty setting up 4th and 23. The punt snap sailed high resulting in Garden City taking over at the Indian 30 yard line.&nbsp;

The Buffaloes had just one yard of offense prior to that drive. They scored from the thirty on just three plays closing the gap down to 21-7 at halftime.

The Indians defense dominance continued through out the second half. Garden City moved the ball into Hays territory but was stopped on a sack on fourth down after 14 plays and 5:50 came off the clock.&nbsp;

Garden City never threatened to score again. Hays pushed the score ahead one more touchdown on a fourth quarter run with 8:34 remaining for a 28-7 lead.&nbsp;

Dylan Dreiling and Jordan Dale each ran for two scores. The Hays High defense allowed just 50 yards of offense, 3o of which came on the Buffaloes lone scoring drive.&nbsp;

Hays wins a minimum share of the WAC title at 3-0 and is 4-0 overall. Garden City falls to 1-3 and 1-1 in the conference.

The Indians right now do not have a game schedule next Friday as Abilene had to cancel due to COVID. The next scheduled game for Hays High is at home against Dodge City in two week. The Indians are searching for an opponent next week.

Royals outfielder Alex Gordon announced today that he will retire from baseball, effective this Sunday, September 27 following the season finale vs. the Detroit Tigers. Gordon, a seven-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner and Rawlings Platinum Glove winner (2014), ranks among the franchise’s all-time leaders in most all offensive categories, including walks (682, 3rd), home runs (190, 4th), doubles (357, 5th), extra-base hits (573, 5th), games played (1,749, 6th), at-bats (6,380, 6th), runs (867, 6th), hits (1,641, 6th) and RBI (749, 6th).&nbsp;

Gordon, who started all 16 postseason games during Kansas City’s 2015 World Series run, has played his entire 14-year career with Kansas City from 2007-20, making him one of three position players to play 14 seasons (or more) with the Royals, joining George Brett (21 seasons) and Frank White (18). Gordon’s 1,749 games entering tonight are the fourth most of any active player who has played for only one team, trailing Yadier Molina (2,021), Joey Votto (1,768) and Ryan Braun (1,761).&nbsp;

Gordon was selected second overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nebraska and made his Major League debut on Opening Day in 2007 as a third baseman, before moving to left field during the 2010 season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a three-run home run, Maikel Franco hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 8-7. 

Franco’s eighth homer of the season put the Royals ahead in a game between two teams eliminated from postseason play. 

Adalberto Mondesi had four hits and two RBIs, Perez had two hits and three RBIs, and Jorge Soler plated one. 

Miguel Cabrera continued his hot streak with a two-run homer in the fifth to tie the game at 4. He has four home runs and 12 RBIs in the past four games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cardinals are headed back to Busch Stadium with their playoff fate still in their hands.

No thanks to Salvador Perez and Franchy Cordero.

The pair of Royals each hit two homers and drove in five runs Wednesday night, and out-of-contention Kansas City got a solid start from Danny Duffy while pummeling playoff-chasing St. Louis 12-3 in their series finale.

The Cardinals (27-26) remain 3 1/2 games back of first-place Chicago in the NL Central after the Cubs lost to Pittsburgh, but their edge for the No. 2 spot in the division was nearly wiped out. The Reds (29-28) beat the Brewers (27-28) in their series finale to close within percentage points of St. Louis headed toward a pivotal final weekend.

“We do have our destiny in our own hands,” said Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, whose team has five games in four days against Milwaukee beginning Thursday night. “We just came off a 13-game, 10-day road trip with a winning record, so we have to feel good about that. And we have our destiny in our hands, and I feel good about it.”

Both of Perez’s homers came off Carlos Martinez (0-3), who departed with a strained lower back with two runners on and nobody out in the sixth. Seth Elledge inherited a 1-0 count against Cordero, who had just returned from a wrist injury, and he crushed his first homer of the year two pitches later to extend the Kansas City lead.

Cordero added a solo shot off Kodi Whitley in the seventh for his second career multi-homer game.

“He put on a show,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He just took over.”

Duffy (4-4) allowed Dexter Fowler’s single in the fifth inning and loaded the bases in the sixth, but reliever Scott Barlow retired pinch-hitter Brad Miller to preserve a 6-1 lead. The Royals’ bullpen handled the Cardinals the rest of the way to give Kansas City its first rubber-game win in six tries this season.

“I had no idea,” Matheny said. “Once again, we’re thinking of winning every game. But there’s something to be said for winning series. To have the kind of sustained success we want to have, you have to be winning series.”

Cincinnati has three games left against Minnesota, while the weary Cardinals face Milwaukee. If needed to settle who is in the playoffs or home-field advantage, the Cardinals also could have two makeup games against Detroit on Monday.

At least the Cardinals won’t have to face Perez again.

The hot-hitting Royals catcher sent the first pitch he saw from Martinez an estimated 437 feet to center field for a two-run homer. Two innings later, he crushed a 1-0 offering an estimated 435 feet to left for a three-run shot. It was the sixth career multi-homer game for Perez, who is hitting .358 for the season, and the third with five RBIs.

“You know, when a guy displays that elite skill set and elite talent on both sides of the ball, day-in and day-out, it doesn’t surprise you anymore,” Duffy said. “It’s what we’ve come to expect. He does what he does. He’s a pro.”

OF Bubba Starling (back spasms) and RHP Kyle Zimmer (elbow pain) were placed on the injured list. Cordero and LHP Mike Montgomery (lat strain) returned from rehab assignments. RHP Jakob Junis was recalled from the alternate training site and INF/OF Erick Mejia was optioned there. RHP Matt Harvey (lat strain) was transferred to the 45-day IL.

Cardinals RHP Dakota Hudson (flexor tendon) was examined by team medical director Dr. George A. Paletta Jr. and will seek a second opinion. Hudson was 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA when he was shut down for the season.

“I don’t think we’re in a place where we’re going public with (the results),” said Shildt, who declined to say whether surgery will be needed. “Not trying to be coy. There’s just some semantics here from a timing standpoint. He did see Dr. Paletta and all the imaging has been looked at and he’s aware of what’s going on.”

RHP Austin Gomber earned the potentially crucial Sunday start against Milwaukee in the Cardinals’ final scheduled regular-season game. Gomber took Hudson’s place against Kansas City on Tuesday night and pitched six innings of four-hit ball.

TMP's Wasinger signs with Tabor College

HAYS - More than a month after the MIAA announced
the suspension of fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, three of the
conference’s schools have announced they are moving forward with a partial 2020
football schedule beginning in late October.

Despite the move by Pittsburg State, Missouri
Western State and Nebraska-Kearney to play games this fall, Fort Hays State
has no such plans.

“We felt like that was going against what we
had originally voted on.” said FHSU athletic director Curtis Hammeke. “We made
our plans and our practice structures with the idea of not playing any games
this fall, so we’re going to stick to that.”

The move by the three schools to play comes
after last Thursday’s 10-2 vote by the MIAA athletic directors to move forward with
a four-game fall schedule. The motion did not gain approval from the conference’s
presidents who had a 5-5 split on the vote with two of the league’s presidents
abstaining.

Pittsburg State, Missouri Western State and
Nebraska-Kearney will each play two games against one another while filling out
the remainder of the schedules with other NCAA II and NCAA I FCS institutions.

And while there’s technically nothing wrong
with conference schools scheduling games, Hammeke senses some frustration amongst
the other MIAA members.

“I do believe the intent of that action was
for no one to participate against outside competition this fall for a number of
reasons in terms of safety with their student athletes.” Hammeke said. “Fort
Hays has chosen not to go against that, feeling like it’s the ethical thing to
do, but I do think there is a sense of frustration.” 

“I think we’ll probably see some others maybe
try to put themselves in a position to play games this fall, we just aren’t going
to follow along in that path. I don’t think it makes sense.” Hammeke added. “We’re
going to hold to our plans that we had in place and hopefully have a sense of
gratitude for how much we are able to do right now rather than focus on what we’re
not getting to do.”

FHSU head football coach Chris Brown agrees
with Hammeke’s decision to no play this fall.

“When we heard that the season was canceled
and there would be no fall competition, we set a plan for our kids to make sure
they were healthy and safe and ready to actually play a true football game and
I just don’t think we’re there yet.” Brown said. “We moved things a little bit
slower than we normally do during the fall, but that’s because we didn’t really
do much through the spring and through the summer. We’ve had a plan set since
this all happened and we’re going to stay to that plan and make sure our kids are
ready to play when that time comes.” 

Discussions are ongoing for MIAA spring
volleyball and soccer schedules. Brown said football will likely have three or four
playing dates in the spring that will be either games or scrimmages against
outside competition.

🏈 FHSU sticks with plan for no football this fall

The Knights, who are ranked ninth in last week's KVA Class 1A Division I poll, swept the host Coyotes 25-20, 26-24 then swept Ness City 25-17,&nbsp; 25-20.

Ellis split their two matches at their own triangular Tuesday. The Railers were swept by Smith Center 25-14, 25-11 but came back to defeat Hill City 25-23, 22-25, 25-12.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Austin Gomber heard longtime Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright say that his goal before pitching a complete game against Milwaukee last week was to throw no more than 12 pitches in any inning.

With the same target in mind, the reliever-turned-starter proceeded to throw six innings of four-hit ball in a crucial spot start against Kansas City on Tuesday night. And with Dylan Carlson and the rest of Gomber’s offense providing support, the Cardinals rolled to a 5-0 victory that gave them the slightest of cushions in the race for a playoff spot.

“Me not being built up as much as everybody, I was just trying to go as deep as I could,” said Gomber, who got the ball in place of injured right-hander Dakota Hudson. “That was my goal, 12 pitches or less. That was just kind of the goal. Get as many outs as I could as quickly as I could.”

Gomber (1-1), who dealt with biceps tendinitis throughout last season, wound up striking out three without a walk while blanking an opponent for the 11th time in 13 appearances. He also won for the first time since Sept. 18, 2018, at Atlanta.

The Cardinals, who trail the Chicago Cubs by 3 1/2 games in the NL Central, improved to 27-25 by evening their series with their cross-state rivals. They also built the slightest of cushion in the race for the No. 2 spot in the division after Milwaukee (28-28) eked out a win over Cincinnati (27-27) earlier in the evening.

“We’re coming out here looking to win some ballgames,” said Carlson, who had two RBIs while finishing a homer shy of the cycle — he hit a ball to the warning track in his final at-bat. “To come through early and get some runs on the board felt good.”

Brad Miller, Tommy Edman and Kolten Wong also drove in runs for the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, Royals starter Brady Singer watched the 14-inning scoreless streak that he carried into the game go away, along with his command. He walked two in the first inning, then walked the first two batters of the second, when Carlson’s double brought them home. Wong made it 3-0 later in the inning.

Singer (3-5) wound up walking five in three-plus innings, throwing just 44 of 81 pitches for strikes.

That led to an ugly ending to the 50th birthday of Royals manager Mike Matheny, who took umbrage with what he thought was the squeezing of his young pitcher by plate umpire Manny Gonzalez. Matheny expressed his displeasure while making a pitching change in the fourth inning and was immediately tossed from the game.

With no fans in the ballpark, Matheny’s rising voice could be heard all the way into the upper deck.

“Walked off the field and I basically told him he was squeezing the kid, making it harder for him than he needed,” Matheny said. “He asked me who the pitcher was and I told him to figure it out for himself and that’s how the whole thing went.”

The rookie starter wasn’t shy about voicing his displeasure with the plate umpire, either.

“Yeah, I did,” Singer said. “Absolutely.”

The Cardinals wore the gray road uniforms of the 1930 St. Louis Stars and the Royals donned the home cream uniforms of the 1945 Kansas City Monarchs to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues.

The Stars featured such players as “Cool Papa” Bell, John “Mule” Suttles and Willie Wells while Jackie Robinson played for the Monarchs before breaking baseball’s color barrier by signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers for the 1947 season.

Hudson, who left his start last week against Pittsburgh with elbow soreness, was shut down for the season when the Cardinals transferred him to the 45-day injured list. The original diagnosis was a “flexor tendon issue,” Cardinals president John Mozeliak said, but Hudson is due to see team medical director Dr. George A. Paletta Jr.

“Our doctors have reviewed the MRI but you still want to do the normal consultation,” Mozeliak said, when asked whether surgery could be needed. “Until that happens, no decision has been made on next steps.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The MIAA COVID-19 Task Force has prepared a Return To Competition Game Plan. The document provides recommendations and requirements for member schools to implement as the Association prepares for the return of competition this fall and winter on MIAA Campuses.

The Task Force developed the Return To Competition Game Plan through the MIAA’s partnership with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.uscah.com/">U.S. Council For Athletes Health</a>&nbsp;and other higher education association resources along with a collection of best practices and suggestions from local and state agencies.&nbsp;

A few highlights include COVID-19 screening and testing protocols for practices and competitions. It also covers general guidelines and recommendations for facilities, fans, teams, media, student-athletes, coaches, officials, and game day staff.&nbsp;

The Return To Competition Game Plan document was made available to member institutions last week, and it will continue to be monitored by the Task Force and Conference Office Staff. Changes and updates to the document will be edited as necessary per medical and scientific advancements.

MIAA prepares return to competition document

As
the 2020 Kansas high school football season continues, The Kansas Shrine Bowl
Board of Directors has announced the selection of the 2021 head coaches. DeSoto’s Brian King and Norton’s Lucas Melvin will serve as&nbsp;the head
coaches for the 2021 Kansas Shrine Bowl, to be held Saturday,&nbsp;June 26th&nbsp;at Gowans Stadium in&nbsp;Hutchinson, Kansas. 

Melvin
will lead the&nbsp;West and King the East.&nbsp;

The
head coaches are selected by a&nbsp;vote of the previous games staff, including
fellow coaches, camp directors, trainers, and managers.

Twenty
years after competing for the East Squad in the 2000 Kansas Shrine Bowl, DeSoto’s
Brian King returned as an assistant coach in 2020. Now King will join a rare
list of players who have also served as head coach in the game. Coach King
joins recent coaches, Warren Seitz and Scott Vang who each played in the game,
then coached in 2018. 

King
has led a growing DeSoto program to prominence, finishing 10-1 in 2019. The
Wildcats are off to a 2-1 start in 2020. Coach King prepped at Onaga before
getting his degree&nbsp;in Education from Emporia State. Brian and his
wife&nbsp;Audrey have three children Addison, Briggam, and Canton.

“I
am very honored&nbsp;to be selected as the East head coach in the 2021 Shrine
Bowl.”&nbsp;said King. “Participating in this game is a great honor, as well as a great way for us as players and coaches to serve others while playing and coaching the game we love. I participated in this game as a player in 2000 and a coach in 2020 and I have greatly valued the experience and the relationships I have built during those times. I have a great appreciation for the Shriners and Shriners hospitals and the services they provide and could not be more excited to be participating in this game in 2021.”

In
2020, Lucas Melvin joined a special list of assistant coaches that have had the
opportunity to coach their own son in the Kansas Shrine Bowl, as Kade Melvin
represented Norton for the West Squad. Coach Melvin will return to the Kansas
Shrine Bowl sideline as the head coach in 2021.&nbsp;

Melvin
has led a Norton program to become a consistently dominant program in the West,
building a 102-47 record in 13&nbsp;seasons as head coach. Coach Melvin led the
Bluejays to a 9-4 record in 2019, falling to Nemaha Central in the class 2A state championship game. Norton is off to a 3-0 start in 2020 and are currently
ranked #4 in class 2A. 

Coach Melvin graduated from Colby High School before
graduating from Hutchinson Community College and Fort Hays&nbsp;State
University. Lucas and his wife Angela have five children,&nbsp;Alec, Miah,
Kade, Tyce, and Noah.

“I
feel very honored and privileged to be chosen as the head coach of the West
forthe 2021 Kansas Shrine Bowl” said Melvin. “I had a tremendous
experience&nbsp;last year and I am looking forward to&nbsp;agreat experience

As of now, Hays&nbsp; High has no opponent for their homecoming game on Oct. 2.

The Indians were to host Abilene but their district has moved to remote learning due to an increase in COVID-19 cases and has suspended all extracurricular activities until at least Oct 5.

In a notice to parents/guardians, USD 435 Superintendent Greg Brown wrote, "Please understand this is absolutely the last thing we want to do. We understand how important it is to have our students in school, receiving a first-rate educational experience, but COVID-19 has struck our teachers and support staff significantly. We have four (4) adults who have already tested positive and (4) more not feeling well, who are being tested as I speak. The combination of adults who have tested positive and the related quarantine orders have made it necessary to take this measure. We hope to be back in school on Monday, October 5th. During the next two weeks, we will be looking at other measures to provide the face to face instruction we know our community desires in spite of the increased COVID-19 testing results."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals were into the Kansas City bullpen by the fourth inning, and Adam Wainwright was looking like a spry youngster rather than a 39-year-old workhorse as the right-hander sliced through the Royals batting order.

Just about everything was looking up for a team fighting for a playoff spot.

Maikel Franco hit the go-ahead single off Wainwright with two outs in the sixth inning, and the Kansas City bullpen shut down the Cardinals from the fourth inning on, allowing the Royals to rally for a 4-1 victory on Monday night.

“The hardest part for me is I’m standing on the mound, I know our team needs me to get that zero right there,” said Wainwright, who wound up allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. “That’s probably the best I felt all year, honestly. And it hurts to come away with a loss. The team needed me to come away with a win.”

The Cardinals fell 4 1/2 games back of the Cubs in the NL Central and, more importantly, into a tie with Cincinnati for the division’s second guaranteed playoff spot. The Reds beat the Brewers earlier in the night.

“You know, they all count. Clearly. We don’t come to the park any day and don’t feel good about it,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “We played a pretty straight-up ballgame and a couple bounces went their way.”

Alex Gordon and Jorge Soler also drove in runs for the Royals, who returned for their final homestand after getting swept in Milwaukee, and were starting off with a playoff contender in the Cardinals that had won four straight games.

It didn’t matter to Carlos Hernandez, making his second career start, and a stout Kansas City bullpen. Hernandez allowed one run over 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Jake Newberry, Scott Barlow, Josh Staumont (2-1) and Jesse Hahn. They combined to allow one hit — a two-out single by Paul Goldschmidt — without a walk over the next 4 1/3 innings.

Greg Holland worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his sixth save.

“The bullpen was fantastic,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “One right after the other.”

The Interstate 70 rivals played to a draw through five innings in wildly different fashions.

The Cardinals leaned on Wainwright, their erstwhile ace, who faced the minimum number of batters through the first five innings. The Royals countered with a parade of relievers that seemed ever-stingier as the innings wore on.

How each team produced its lone early run was different, too.

The Cardinals took advantage of one mighty swing from Matt Carpenter, who sent the 3-1 offering from Hernandez nearly 440 feet into the fountains in right . The Royals answered with small ball in the fifth, stringing together a single, a double and a chopping fielder’s choice from Gordon that knotted the game 1-all.

They used some more small ball to pull ahead in the sixth. Whit Merrifield led off with a single, Salvador Perez added a single of his own and, after Jorge Soler drew a walk, Franco gave the Royals a lead they would never relinquish.

“I mean, groundball to right field, to the left of first base — not a common thing,” Shildt said. “We’ll take that soft contact. Can’t always tell where it’s going to go. Just because it doesn’t work out doesn’t mean it wasn’t right.”

The Cardinals activated OF Dexter Fowler and RHP Giovanny Gallegos from the injured list before the game. Fowler had been out since Sept. 2 to deal with a stomach ailment that required a medication regimen that would have made him more vulnerable to the coronavirus should he become exposed. Gallegos was sidelined by a groin injury.

OF Justin Williams and RHP Nabil Crismatt were optioned to the club’s alternate training site and RHP Roel Ramirez was designated for assignment to create space on the roster.

The Royals reinstated Soler from the injured list before the game and optioned infielder Kelvin Gutierrez to their alternate training site. Soler was hitting .235 with eight homers and 22 RBIs before hurting his oblique on Sept. 5.

SALINA - Another
tournament, another title for the Hays High girls’ golf team. The Indians won their fourth tournament in five tries this fall, taking the Salina South Invitational by one shot over Manhattan Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Taleia McCrae shot a six-over-par 76 and finished second. Sophia Garrison fired a
