⚾Offense carriers Larks to sweep of Cougars

The Hays Larks collected 19 hits and hit four runs as they picked up their sixth win in-a-row Sunday 16-9 over the Denver Cougars at Larks Park in Hays.

The Larks (10-1, 5-1) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first inning.

The first four hitters of the game reached base for the Larks in the bottom of the first as they hit for the cycle as a team.

After a Grant Lung single, Cam Pehrson homered to put Hays up 2-0.  Wyatt Divis followed with a triple and then Grant Schmidt doubled him home for a 3-0 lead. 

Two batters later Core Jackson singled and then Brock Lummus followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field making it 6-0 Hays.

After the Larks added a run on a wild pitch in the second inning Denver plated two runs in the top of the third inning cutting the Hays lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the third inning the Larks sent 10 to the plate and scored five runs to take a 12-2 lead.

With the bases loaded Zach Henry was hit by a pitch and followed by a Grant Lung grand slam to put Hays up by 10.

Denver (3-11, 1-5) got three runs in the top of both the fifth and sixth innings to make is 12-7 Hays.

Lummus drove in a third run in the bottom of the sixth inning making it 13-8 Hays through six innings.

After Denver got a run back in the top of the seventh to cut Hays’ lead to 13-9, Hays scored three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Divis opened the inning with a two-run home run making it 15-9 Larks. Core Jackson tripled home a run to put Hays up 16-9.

Corey Bright earned the win for Hays. He allowed five runs over four and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts and four walks.

Lung was two-for-six with four RBI’s and two runs. Lummus drove in three runs. Pehrson, Divis and Jackson all drove in two runs.

Hays will have Monday off before hosting the Boulder Collegians for a two-game series starting Tuesday.
