ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson has agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent.

Agent Bryan Ehrlich confirmed the deal Sunday. Patterson started all 26 games for the Wolverines over the past two seasons after transferring from Mississippi.

Patterson threw for 3,061 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season. He threw 45 touchdown passes in his two years at Michigan. Patterson passed for 131 yards in the Senior Bowl.

Patterson started 10 games at Ole Miss but transferred after the school was hit by NCAA sanctions. He was granted eligibility at Michigan in 2018 without sitting out a year.

Kansas football announces renewed series with Missouri

While everyone from administrators to fans are hopeful for
the return of college athletics this fall, the NCAA and its member institutions
are making contingency plans should that not be the case. 

“We’re working as if everything is going to be normal in the
fall and keeping our fingers crossed that it will,” said Fort Hays State
Athletic Director Curtis Hammeke.

And while Fort Hays State is moving forward like everything
will go on as scheduled, Hammeke knows there is no guarantee seasons will
start on time or be played in their entirety. He said there has been some talk
of reduced or modified schedules at the Division II level for the upcoming
2020-21 academic year.

“Certainly, there’s financial ramifications involved, and
that’s going to eventually affect what the schedules look like,” Hammeke said.
“We’re still hoping everything stays as planned, but I
do see some momentum gaining for some reduced or modified schedules.”

Member institutions have received surveys from the NCAA
concerning a possible reduction in the number of games played in the 2020-21 academic
year. Schools are being asked how they feel about reductions ranging anywhere
from 10 percent to more than 20 percent. Hammeke said Memorial Day is target date for decisions concerning the fall.

FHSU has altered all of the summer sports camps. Some have been canceled, and others have been moved to July and will only be day camps, eliminating
the use of dormitories.

Both KU and K-State have announced in recent weeks that
their football and basketball coaches — along with some high-ranking athletic department
administrators — have taken pay cuts to help offset budget deficits. That has not
been the case at Fort Hays State, which works with a significantly smaller budget.

“I’m very grateful that we haven’t gotten into staff reductions
and furloughs,” Hammeke said. “Our people have been able to keep working from
home, continue the recruiting process, continuing the preparations for next
year.”

The athletic department had to move the annual Jim and Blake
McGuire Scholarship Golf Tournament, which was scheduled for mid-April, to September.
The next big event on the calendar is the Tiger Auction and Dinner. Hammeke
said, as of now, they are planning to hold the event as scheduled. &nbsp;

“Here we are in a situation where the auction will be more
important than ever at a time where a lot of people will be more handcuffed
then ever in terms of being able to help with that,” Hammeke said. 

“We’re going
to have some negative funding sources from the state level and potentially from
student fees if our enrollment is not as high on campus. And then if you start reducing
these schedules and you start taking away revenue from ticket sales and
concessions and marketing and advertising — all of those things we utilize to
help reach our budget.”

Chiefs sign free agent defensive end Taco Charlton

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has gone from the offensive line to the front line, using the medical degree he completed during offseasons with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to help patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Still dressed in his lab coat while taking a lunch break Friday, the gregarious Duvernay-Tardif explained during a video interview that he contacted the health ministry in his native Canada early in the outbreak to see how he could help.

Duvernay-Tardif began by making public-service announcements and getting out the word about social distancing. But he soon sprang into action when it became clear there would be a shortage of trained medical professionals.

“In times of crisis,” Duvernay-Tardif said while drinking from a carton of milk, “there are so many extra steps you need to take to protect yourself, but also the patients. We're using visors and masks all day long, washing hands — so many precautionary measures just makes everything heavier in terms of risk, and that's why they needed so many more people. There are a lot of health professionals that have gotten sick, but also just so much more work to do.”

The only active medical school graduate in the NFL earned his degree from McGill University. He still had hospital rotations and other work to finish when the Chiefs drafted him in 2014, which meant returning to his native Canada each offseason and putting in some long hours.

His dedication has paid off in both professions.

On the field, Duvernay-Tardif blossomed from backup lineman into stalwart starter for a franchise that just won its first Super Bowl in five decades. He became so dependable the Chiefs signed him to a $42.36 million, five-year contract in 2017, more than $20 million guaranteed and a $10 million signing bonus.

And Duvernay-Tardif kept up his studies, putting him in position to help when COVID-19 began to spread.

“The first time I was confronted by the coronavirus was at the Super Bowl, when a reporter asked me about it. I'm like, ‘I’m about to play in the biggest game of my life!' I wasn't really focused on it,” he said. “Three months later, half the planet is in quarantine. It's crazy how things have evolved."

Duvernay-Tardif took a trip with his girlfriend to celebrate the championship and recover from the grueling NFL season. It became clear how quickly things had changed upon his return. Duvernay-Tardif had been in an at-risk area on vacation and was forced to go into isolation.

“There was a shortage of people in long-term care facilities,” he said, “and I proposed myself to go work. And it's one thing to say that, but when you get your first shift, it hits you: ‘How can I protect myself and juggle these things?’"

Duvernay-Tardif ran his plans by Chiefs coach Andy Reid and the front office. He got their blessing and made arrangements to keep those around him safe. That included ensuring he was up to date on the latest protective equipment, and securing an empty apartment to use as a changing station. He goes there after each shift to shower and put on clean clothes before returning home to his family.

Because he hasn't finished residency requirements, Duvernay-Tardif's medical responsibilities are somewhat limited. He helps deliver medications and do the work of orderlies and nurses. But his training also means Duvernay-Tardif is able to recognize when something is amiss and act upon it quickly.

“Larry and I have talked a couple times,” Reid said Friday, “so I knew that's what he was doing. He's taking all the precautions he can, but he's jumping in. He's going. And you wouldn't expect anything different from Larry.”

Reid has a unique appreciation for Duvernay-Tardif because of his own background. His mother, a radiologist, knew Dan Fortmann, who'd been drafted by Chicago in 1936. Fortmann was unsure whether to play football or attend medical school, but Bears owner George Halas convinced him he could do both — even advancing him money for his education.

Fortmann eventually played eight seasons for the Bears, helped them win three NFL titles and made the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He retired in 1943, joined the Navy and was assigned to a hospital ship near the end of World War II. Fortmann returned to the U.S. and began his surgical practice in Los Angeles, where he became friends with Reid's mother.

“I got to know Dr. Fortmann,” Reid recalled, “and he told me the story of how Papa Bear Halas had let him in the offseason go about his medical studies, and I think it went into training camp a bit. Now here comes Larry and he had to do some things in the offseason, and I understood that. I had a mother who was a doctor, and I had heard these stories from Dr. Fortmann. So it allowed me with a clear mind to say, ‘Do what you need to do. It’s a pretty spectacular thing.'”

Considering Duvernay-Tardif's education, the NFL Players Association asked him to join a task force to evaluate return-to-play plans. He declined to reveal his preference.

Meanwhile, Duvernay-Tardif intends to put his medical training to use — for as long as necessary.

“I'm here to help, support and contribute in a time of crisis," he said. “I asked coach Reid and everyone, ‘Is it OK going to the front line?' Everybody has been great. We all understand that there is something bigger than football going on.”

The 28-year-old Breeland faces five total charges, including resisting arrest and drug possession, after he was seen smoking marijuana in a car late Tuesday. Breeland was released on $2,362.50 bond after spending nearly 10 hours in jail.

“Yeah, I've talked to him,” Reid acknowledged during a conference call with reporters. “We'll let it play out with the law enforcement side of things and evaluate it from there.”

Breeland was among three individuals witnessed by a deputy smoking in a parked car at a gas station, according to the incident report from York County. The report stated that when a sheriff's deputy attempted to speak with Breeland, the player continued to resist and the officer took out his taser. Breeland then pushed the deputy and attempted to get back into his car, at which point the officer drew his weapon and ordered him to put up his hands.

Breeland was handcuffed and arrested. A search of his vehicle found an open container of alcohol and a bag of marijuana, the report said, and a search of his phone found several communications about purchasing marijuana.

Breeland acknowledged to the deputy that he was a “marijuana enthusiast,” the report said.

Two attorneys for Breeland, Bakari Sellers and J. Preston Strom Jr., issued a statement in which they asked why the deputy drew his gun and said they were looking “forward to investigating why the level of force was necessary."

Breeland signed a one-year contract with Kansas City last year, and he wound up starting 15 games while allowing a completion percentage of just 48.4 He also picked off two passes during the regular season, and he had a team-high seven tackles and an interception while helping the Chiefs to a 31-20 victory over the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

He signed another one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million with the Chiefs last month.

“We're just going to let the law enforcement part of it take its course. Let's see exactly what went on,” Reid said. “I know there is video out there. I've seen the video. I've talked to the kid. Let's find out what the pace of this was and what caused everything to take place. I'm curious to see that part, as we all are, and then we'll evaluate it from there.”

Brown was the 41st overall pick, selected in the fifth round of the Canadian Football League draft by the Edmonton Eskimos.



Brown, a Mississauga, Ontario native, joins former Fort Hays State running back Shaquille Cooper with the Eskimos.

Brown is the most decorated kicker in FHSU history and was recently named to the D2Football.com All-Decade Team.

When St. Joseph's College (Ind.) closed its doors in the spring of 2017, Brown was left searching for a new place to play. St. Joseph's was a member of Division II, part of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Brown was nearly committed to play in his native country of Canada at the University of Western Ontario as a defensive back, but Fort Hays State contacted him with an offer a couple weeks prior to the start of the 2017 season. Brown took the opportunity at FHSU and earned All-America honors as both a kicker and punter over his final three years of collegiate football.

Though he didn't serve as placekicker his first year at FHSU, Brown made an immediate impact for the Tigers as a punter averaging 43.5 yards per attempt for the second-best average in program history. It netted him his first All-America honor while wearing the Black and Gold, helping the Tigers to a perfect 11-0 regular season and the No. 1 seed in Super Region 3 of the NCAA Playoffs.

Brown took over the kicking duties from senior Brandon Brown in 2018 and decimated the FHSU record for kicking points in a season with 123, breaking Brandon Brown's mark of 94 set the prior season. He made 28-of-33 field goal attempts and added 39 PATs that year, while also averaging a solid 41.4 yards on his 67 punt attempts for the season and tying the longest punt in FHSU history (an 84-yard bomb). 

Brown finished the year two field goal makes shy of the NCAA Division II single-season record of 30. He earned MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year and All-America honors as a kicker from three organizations, while being named an All-America selection at both kicker and punter by the Don Hansen Football Committee. That netted him the distinction as Don Hansen's Division II National Special Teams Player of the Year, helping the Tigers to another appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.

Brown gave up his punting duties his senior season and&nbsp;closed out his signature career at FHSU by earning All-America honors from five organizations that included four first team selections as a kicker. Named the National Special Teams Player of the Year by the Don Hansen Football Committee for a second-straight year, he made 19 field goals alongside 52 PATs for 109 points on the season. 

Brown is the only FHSU kicker in history to break the 100-point barrier in a season, accomplishing it twice. He finished with 232 points in two years of holding the kicker role at FHSU, 12 points shy of career points leader Drew O'Brien, who kicked from 2012-15. Brown also finished second on the career punting average list at FHSU, averaging 42.4 yards per attempt over two years in the punter role.

FHSU kicker Brown selected by Edmonton in CFL Draft

Former TMP-Marian standout Bailey Lacy has
verbally committed to play softball next season at Missouri Southern State. 

Lacy made the announcement on Twitter Thursday evening.

Following her
career with the Monarchs, Lacy spent two seasons at Highland Community College.


She made two appearances with one start this spring before their season was
canceled, taking a loss. As a freshman, Lacy went 16-5 with three saves in 25
appearances and 19 starts.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have exercised their fifth-year option on Patrick Mahomes, ensuring their star quarterback will be under contract for at least two more seasons.

But general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid are hoping to reach a long-term deal with the reigning Super Bowl MVP by the start of training camp. The contract could last four or five years and make Mahomes the first player in NFL history to make at least $40 million per season.

Mahomes has completed almost 66% of his passes for 9,412 yards, 76 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions since being taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 draft.

If the Chiefs are unable to sign Mahomes to a long-term deal, he would be due a base salary of $25 million for the 2021 season.

NCAA board supports name, image and likeness compensation

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With recent events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and in conjunction with University leadership, K-State Athletics today announced that selected coaches and senior level staff members have agreed to salary reductions for the upcoming fiscal year which begins on July 1.

Head football coach Chris Klieman and men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber have agreed to a 13 percent reduction, while all K-State Athletics employees making more than $150,000 per year will see a 10 percent reduction. Those who make between $100,000 and $150,000 will see their salary reduced by 5 percent. Combined, these salary reductions are expected to save the department approximately $1.5 million.

In addition, the department has cut its operating expenses by 10 percent, a savings of approximately $2 million, for the upcoming year.

“We are in the midst of such a unique time, and I sincerely appreciate our staff and coaches taking this situation in stride and showcasing strong leadership,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “From revenue streams to competitions, a lot of unknowns remain ahead of us, and this reduction plan will allow us to focus on the needs of our programs and student-athletes. We remain confident that the return to normalcy is ahead of us and appreciate all that our coaches, staff, student-athletes, fans and supporters have done to help us through this unprecedented period.”

Northeastern State opened the 2019-20 season with a 9-1 mark and entered the NABC National Top-25 poll for the first time since 2013. &nbsp; The RiverHawks finished the season with an 18-11 record and fifth the MIAA standings.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State women's basketball head coach Tony Hobson&nbsp;has announced the signing of six incoming freshman in advance of the 2020-21 season. All six players in the loaded class earned All-State honors at least once during their high school tenure.

"This is a very talented freshman class that could prove to be the strongest class we've ever signed," said Hobson. "That is saying a lot because we have had several tremendous classes over the last nine years.

"Not only is this a deep group with six solid players, but it also covers all positions. They all come from winning programs, and there are multiple state champions in this group. Five of the six players played in the state tournament this year, with the other one missing the state tournament by just one game."



Sydney Golladay&nbsp;| 5-8 | Guard Fremont, Neb. | Fremont High Sc

Sydney Golladay was a four-time letterwinner at Fremont (Neb.) High School. As a team captain during her senior year, the 5-8 guard helped the Tigers reach the Class A semifinals after their first State Tournament victory in school history to reach the Class A semifinals. Golladay earned honorable mention All-State accolades after averaging 11.2 points, 4.7 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. She earned first team all-conference honors and was picked to play in the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game.



Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;| 6-3 | Forward Lincoln, Neb. | Lincoln Christian School

Olivia Hollenbeck is coming off an impressive four-year run at Lincoln (Neb.) Christian School. The forward was a first team All-State selection as a junior and a senior. She played in three state championship games as a Crusader, winning the Class C1 title in 2017. A two-time team captain, Hollenbeck set the school record for highest field goal percentage and scored more than 1,000 points in her career at LCS. She averaged 15 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.2 assists per game as a senior. As both a junior and senior Hollenbeck was named first team all-conference, first team All-Class C1 state tournament and second team&nbsp;Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;all-city team. She was also selected to play in this year's Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game.

Emma Ruddle&nbsp;| 5-8 | Guard Canton, Kan. | McPherson High School

Emma Ruddle joins the Tiger family from McPherson (Kan.) High School, a perennial powerhouse. A three-year starter at MHS, Ruddle helped the Bullpups to a 66-5 record over the last three seasons, reaching the state semifinals each year. McPherson won the state title in her sophomore season (2018) and were in the semifinals before the cancellation of this year's tournament. Ruddle earned All-State honors for the second time in her career as a senior after picking up second team honors as a freshman at Canton-Galva High School. The guard earned all-league honors three times, including first team as a freshman, honorable mention as a junior and second team as a senior. Ruddle averaged 8.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.3 assists per game as a senior. She also excelled in track, winning three state titles and finishing runner-up three times. She won both the 100m hurdles and the 100m dash as a sophomore before capturing a second 100m hurdle championship as a junior in 2019.



Jessie Sallach&nbsp;| 6-1 | Forward Callaway, Neb. | South Loup High School

Jessie Sallach joins the Tigers after a strong career at South Loup High School in Arnold, Neb. The forward earned All-State honors, picking up honorable mention honors from the&nbsp;Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;three times and second team honors from the&nbsp;Omaha World Herald. A 1,000-point scorer at South Loup, Sallach left her time with the Lady Bobcats as the career leader in points, rebounds and blocks, the single season leader in points, rebounds and blocks and the single-game leader in points and rebounds. The Callaway, Neb. native was a three-time first team all-conference performer and was selected to play in the 2020 Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game. Sallach nearly averaged a double-double as a senior, tallying 13.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. She also had success in the classroom, earning NSAA Basketball Academic All-State honors.



Carly Thompson&nbsp;| 6-0 | Guard Greenwood Village, Colo. | Cherry Creek High School

Carly Thompson is coming off back-to-back runs to the Colorado class 5A state championship game with Cherry Creek High School. The Greenwood Village, Colo. native helped the Bruins to a state title in 2019 and reached the title game again in 2020 before the tournament was cancelled. Thompson was a team captain as a senior, earning all-league honors after averaging 7.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. The guard also earned first team Academic All-State honors.



Katie Wagner&nbsp;| 5-11 | Guard Maize, Kan. | Maize South High School

Katie Wagner compiled an impressive resume during her time at Maize South High School. The 5-11 guard earned All-State honors each of the last three years while guiding the Mavericks to sub-state titles as a junior and senior. She was a finalist for Kansas Class 5A Player of the Year and earned first team All-State honors from the&nbsp;Topeka Capital Journal,&nbsp;Wichita Eagle&nbsp;and&nbsp;Sports In Kansas. After averaging 18.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.0 steals per game as a senior, she also earned a second team All-State selection by the KBCA, a spot in the All-State All-Class Top 30 by&nbsp;Sports In Kansas, a spot in the Wichita Area All-Metro Top 5, first team all-league honors and co-MVP honors in the AVCTL DII. The Maize, Kan. native also earned first team all-league honors as a sophomore and junior while picking up multiple first team All-State honors as a junior and honorable mention All-State accolades as a sophomore. Wagner surpassed the 1,000-point plateau during her senior year.

 </figure>Sydney Golladay was a four-time letterwinner at Fremont (Neb.) High School. As a team captain during her senior year, the 5-8 guard helped the Tigers reach the Class A semifinals after their first State Tournament victory in school history to reach the Class A semifinals. Golladay earned honorable mention All-State accolades after averaging 11.2 points, 4.7 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. She earned first team all-conference honors and was picked to play in the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game.

As both a junior and senior Hollenbeck was named first team all-conference, first team All-Class C1 state tournament and second team&nbsp;Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;all-city team. She was also selected to play in this year's Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game.

Ruddle earned All-State honors for the second time in her career as a senior after picking up second team honors as a freshman at Canton-Galva High School. The guard earned all-league honors three times, including first team as a freshman, honorable mention as a junior and second team as a senior. Ruddle averaged 8.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.3 assists per game as a senior. She also excelled in track, winning three state titles and finishing runner-up three times. She won both the 100m hurdles and the 100m dash as a sophomore before capturing a second 100m hurdle championship as a junior in 2019.

Sallach nearly averaged a double-double as a senior, tallying 13.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. She also had success in the classroom, earning NSAA Basketball Academic All-State honors.

FHSU women's basketball announces 2020 signing class

YORK, S.C. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland was arrested on several charges Tuesday in South Carolina, including possessing marijuana or hash, driving with an open container of alcohol and resisting arrest.

The 28-year-old Breeland, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was being held at the York County Jail, according to the facility’s online records.

Breeland started 15 of 16 regular-season games and all three postseason contests for Kansas City this past season. He had seven tackles and an interception in the Chiefs’ 31-20 victory over San Francisco in the Super Bowl in February.

Breeland, who played his college ball at Clemson, re-signed with the Chiefs earlier this month.

Breeland was charged by the York County Sheriff’s Office with driving without a license, driving with an open container of alcohol, possession of less than 28 grams of marijuana or 10 grams of hash and resisting arrest.

Breeland is a 5-foot-11, 195-pound defensive back from Allendale, South Carolina. He played for the Tigers from 2011-13 before leaving after his junior season. Breeland played four seasons with Washington before moving to Green Bay in 2018 and then the Chiefs this year.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Christian Covington on a one-year contract.

Covington played for the Dallas Cowboys last year after spending four seasons with the Houston Texans, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Broncos, D-lineman Christian Covington agree to 1-year deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dustin Colquitt walked into the Kansas City Chiefs training facility 15 years ago as a third-round pick out of Tennessee, a punter with a big leg and peerless pedigree.

He wound up setting numerous franchise records, including most games played and most postseason appearances.

Colquitt’s long tenure is finally coming to a close. The Chiefs are releasing the two-time Pro Bowl punter after signing a pair of prospects to compete for the job in training camp. A person familiar with the team’s decision confirmed it to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because it had not been announced.

“I have enjoyed my time in Chiefs Kingdom,” Colquitt, who turns 38 next month, wrote in an Instagram post. “All things come to an end, sometimes sooner than you hoped, prayed and pleaded for them to.”

Colquitt stopped short of saying he was retiring, which would save the Chiefs $2 million in salary cap space. He was due a workout bonus of $2 million, and there will be $650,000 in dead cap space as he entered the final year of his contract.

“I’ll miss walking into the building and smelling the coffee, talking to everyone,” Colquitt continued. “It took me forever to weave through some of the most loving people you’d ever hope to work with. I was a young kid when I first walked into Arrowhead. Hell, the indoor facility used to be 70 yards long. Holding this post for 15 years has been an honor that I never took for granted. Thank you KC.”

Rarely do teams use a third-round draft pick on a specialist, but rare came to describe Colquitt perfectly. He was called upon to punt 1,124 times, 15th in NFL history, and his average of 44.8 yards puts him in the top 25. He also became known for his almost otherworldly ability to pin opponents inside the 20.

His tenure with the Chiefs matched Jerrel Wilson, who punted for the club from 1963-77, for the longest stint in franchise history. His 238 games surpassed offensive lineman Will Shields this past season for the most among Kansas City players. Twelve of those games were in the playoffs, and Colquitt’s last appearance in a Chiefs uniform will have been this past February in Miami, where he helped them win their first Super Bowl championship in five decades.

Along the way, Colquitt earned a reputation as a well-spoken fan favorite who exuded professionalism, whether the Chiefs were winning two games, as they did in 2012, or a dozen, as they had the past couple seasons. He would sign autographs for hours at training camp, and he often took part in the organization’s charitable efforts.

Those efforts led the Chiefs to nominate Colquitt for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Colquitt comes from punting stock. His father, Craig, was part of two Super Bowl championships, and his brother, Britton, is still kicking after winning a title with Denver in 2015. His cousin, Jimmy, also briefly punted in the NFL.

Colquitt’s time in Kansas City nearly ended in 2013, shortly after Andy Reid and his coaching staff arrived. He was a free agent, and new special teams coach Dave Toub had to give Colquitt a recruiting pitch to keep him in the fold.

“I just talked about how I had never had a punter like him. He was such a bomber. He could really flip the field,” Toub recalled. “We actually turned him into more of a directional guy. He was a bomber when we first got here, then we taught him to be more directional, which I really think helped his career in the long run.”

The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing quarterback Kyle Shurmur according to a report by ESPN's Dan Graziano on Monday.

The 23-year old Shurmur joined the Chiefs in April of 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt. He's the son of current Broncos offensive coordinator and former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur.

Shurmur played the most snaps of any of the Kansas City quarterbacks during the preseason last year and finished 33-of-56 for 316 yards, two touchdowns and one interceptions. He was on the Chiefs practice squad for most of 2019 except when he was added to the roster in late October to back up Matt Moore when Patrick Mahomes was injured.

With Shurmur's release that still leaves the Chiefs with three quarterbacks on the roster as Mahomes is joined by Chad Henne and recently signed XFL QB Jordan Ta'Amu.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas athletic director Jeff Long, football coach Les Miles and basketball coach Bill Self have taken a 10% salary reduction for the next six months in an effort to save the athletic department nearly $500,000. 

The move comes as the COVID-19 pandemic is putting pressure on collegiate athletic departments nationwide to cut costs. 

Many schools have asked their highest-paid employees to take salary cuts during the pandemic. A few have taken the more aggressive step of eliminating some sports entirely.

There is another reason the Chiefs wanted to get faster on defense: Every team in the AFC West spent the draft trying to catch them on offense, and that means more pressure on their defense when the play them six times each season.

Raiders general manager Mike Mayock acknowledged that was the case when they chose Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, the fastest player at the scouting combine with a 4.27-second 40-yard dash, with the 12th overall pick. They also added Kentucky wide receiver Lynn Bowden and South Carolina’s Bryan Edwards among the first three rounds.

The Chargers added Virginia’s Joe Reid, another wide receiver with a sub-4.4-second 40, while the Broncos used their first-round pick on Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy (4.45) and their fourth-round selection on Missouri’s Albert Okwuegbunam, who had the combine’s fastest 40 among tight ends at 4.49 seconds.

“We like guys, certainly in our scheme, that have some length and can run,” Veach said. “If we had the first pick in Round 4 it would have been Sneed, so we were certainly holding our breath there. Our guys did a good job of helping me be patient and work through this, because letting the board play itself out and getting Sneed there at the bottom of four there certainly enabled us to use the other equity to go up and get Keyes (in the seventh round).”

Veach said the Chiefs had a fifth-round grade on him, making it good value to trade a sixth-rounder next year to get him.

Arguably the biggest needs of the Chiefs, who used their first-round pick on LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, was at cornerback and linebacker. And they not only addressed those roster shortcomings, they managed to do it through the draft and with rookie free agents while acquiring the kind of speed they have been so sorely lacking.

Perhaps that is why Veach was so pleased with the way things transpired when he recapped the draft on Sunday.

“Our guys did a really great job. Really excited about our draft class,” he said, “and I think our guys really hit a home run after the draft. Some of these guys that we were able to land in free agency were guys that we were considering in the fifth round there, so a lot of these guys that were on the board for that final pick, we were able to stay aggressive and sign after the draft. Again, really excited about the future of the Kansas City Chiefs.”

They spent the past weekend getting their defense up to speed, too.

The Chiefs only had five scheduled picks — they traded back into the draft to pick up a sixth — and made a point of using their choices to prioritize speed and athleticism. Second-round pick Willie Gay Jr. ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash among linebackers at the NFL scouting combine, and fourth-round pick L’Jarius Sneed not only had the fastest time among safeties at 4.37 seconds but the fourth-fastest of any player that ran during the week in Indianapolis.

The run on speed even continued after the draft. The Chiefs signed five defensive backs and two linebackers as undrafted free agents, and one of them — Auburn’s Javaris Davis — had the combine’s second-fastest 40 time among cornerbacks

“It’s certainly how those positions are played nowadays,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. “When you have guys that test extremely well and perform at the combine, or if they had pro days, those guys are certainly going to be — if you didn’t like them on tape, those guys are the ones that are going to get second and third looks.”

That was certainly the case with Gay, Sneed and seventh-round pick Thakarius Keyes. Gay only played a handful of games last season because of off-the-field issues while Sneed (Louisiana Tech) and Keyes (Tulane) mostly played cornerback against lesser competition, leaving all of them with a dearth of quality game film.

Our guys did a good job of helping me be patient and work through this, because letting the board play itself out and getting Sneed there at the bottom of four there certainly enabled us to use the other equity to go up and get Keyes (in the seventh round).”Veach said the Chiefs had a fifth-round grade on him, making it good value to trade a sixth-rounder next year to get him.Arguably the biggest needs of the Chiefs, who used their first-round pick on LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, was at cornerback and linebacker. Second-round pick Willie Gay Jr. ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash among linebackers at the NFL scouting combine, and fourth-round pick L’Jarius Sneed not only had the fastest time among safeties at 4.37 seconds but the fourth-fastest of any player that ran during the week in Indianapolis.ADVERTISEMENTThe run on speed even continued after the draft. The Chiefs signed five defensive backs and two linebackers as undrafted free agents, and one of them — Auburn’s Javaris Davis — had the combine’s second-fastest 40 time among cornerbacks“It’s certainly how those positions are played nowadays,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. “When you have guys that test extremely well and perform at the combine, or if they had pro days, those guys are certainly going to be — if you didn’t like them on tape, those guys are the ones that are going to get second and third looks.”That was certainly the case with Gay, Sneed and seventh-round pick Thakarius Keyes. Gay only played a handful of games last season because of off-the-field issues while Sneed (Louisiana Tech) and Keyes (Tulane) mostly played cornerback against lesser competition, leaving all of them with a dearth of quality game film.The speed they showed during the scouting combine wound up validating the looks the Chiefs did manage to get.“When you see their performances on tape, you get even more excited,” Veach said. “We certainly want to target guys that test well, but they don’t just test well. They’re football players that test well. Not testers that play football.”Of course, straight-line speed is one thing. But what gets Chiefs coach Andy Reid most excited about the fresh faces on his defense is that they play fast. They also have the burst, agility and quickness necessary in the modern NFL.“We kind of have to formulate it and make sure we have the best group that can go in there and dominate on game day,” Reid said. “Brett worked that whole thing and did it to perfection, and as you watch it, you’re able to go back and look at this guy and go, ‘OK, you could use this and you could use that.’ But these kids just jump off the screen at you.”
