HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team will wrap up its fall season with the Fall World Series at Larks Park. The Black and Gold teams will compete in a series consisting of seven intrasquad scrimmages&nbsp;beginning Friday, October 2 at 6 p.m. Team rosters and the full series schedule can be found below.

Fans in attendance will be required to adhere to all&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/covid-19-response/visitors">FHSU&nbsp;health and safety expectations</a>, including but not limited to facial coverings when appropriate, social distancing,&nbsp;hygiene, self-monitoring and symptom checking.

In addition, fans are asked to bring at least one&nbsp;canned food item as price of admission. All items collected will then be donated to a local food bank. Concessions will not be available during any of the Fall World Series contests.

⚾ FHSU baseball readies for Fall World Series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The accolades just keep piling up for Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes as he continues what has been a truly unprecedented start to his young career, and following a stellar performance in Monday night's victory over Baltimore, the reigning Super Bowl MVP is being recognized for his efforts yet again.

Mahomes was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday - marking his fourth career "Player of the Week" award – after completing 31-of-42 passes for 385 yards and five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) against the Ravens' heralded defense.

The 25-year-old Mahomes led the Chiefs to touchdowns on four of their first five possessions and racked up the most passing yards Baltimore had allowed since late in the 2017 campaign. He was 19-for-23 for 250 yards and three touchdowns when facing the Ravens' blitz and converted 10-of-13 third downs, leading Kansas City to a significant victory on the road against one of the top teams in all of football.

His performance was an extension of the former first-round pick's unbelievable track record in the month of September, which includes a 10-0 record, 3,304 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns and zero interceptions.

volleyball faced two ranked opponents at the Smith Center quadrangular Tuesday. The Monarchs split with the ranked teams then blew out Russell to go 2-1 on the night.

The Monarchs (19-5), who are ranked seventh in the latest KVA poll, defeated Smith Center, who is ranked fourth in 2A, 25-20, 15-25, 25-19. 

They lost to Phillipsburg, who’s ranked eighth in 3A, 18-25, 25-23 and 23-25.

TMP closed out the night with&nbsp; a quick sweep of Russell 25-4, 25-8.

The Monarchs are off until Tuesday, October 6th when they host Ulysses at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

girls’ tennis team was in Great Bend for a round-robin Tuesday and had two second place finishes and one in third place.

Maggie Robben went 2-1 in No. 1 singles, the No. 1 doubles team of Caroline Robben and Sage Zweifel as well as the No. 2 doubles team of&nbsp; Taylor Deines and Brittnee Lieker also finished 2-1 and all placed second.

Jamie Haddaway goes 1-2 and
finishes third at No. 2 singles.

🎾 Three second place finishes for HHS in Great Bend

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Brett Rypien&nbsp;kept his head up when he went undrafted out of Boise State. He didn’t get discouraged when he twice got cut by the Denver Broncos.

He didn’t flinch when the Broncos valued Brandon Allen over him last year to serve as a backup to Joe Flacco and then Drew Lock.

Rypien’s determination didn’t waver when the Broncos signed Jeff Driskel last offseason or&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jeff-driskel-denver-broncos-nfl-brett-rypien-football-e33863aea640a2625292f1fbe3c22ad5">Blake Bortles</a>&nbsp;last week.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say discouraged, no,” Rypien said after being named the starter for the Broncos’ game against the New York Jets on Thursday night in a matchup of reeling 0-3 teams. “I’ve always just tried to take the mentality of get better every single day.”

Helping him with that perseverance was his uncle, former Washington QB Mark Rypien.

“He sat his first two years on IR, so having some conversations with him about (how) he overcame adversity throughout his first two years and then being able to win a Super Bowl and be a starter for a few years” helped him learn how to cope and bide his time, Rypien said. “So, I definitely don’t think I ever lost hope or was discouraged. I just tried to get better.”

Coach Vic Fangio accidentally declared Rypiens' 57-year-old-uncle the starter&nbsp;&nbsp;over Driskel on Tuesday.

“Yeah, we’re going to start Mark -- I mean Brett -- I keeping calling him Mark at times because of his uncle,” Fangio said. “But we’re going to go with Brett; but we do have the ability to mix Jeff in there some in the game if we feel like we need to.”

Driskel played admirably after replacing an injured Lock (shoulder) in Denver’s 26-21 loss at Pittsburgh two weeks ago, although he froze and took the sack on fourth down at the Steelers’ 15-yard line in the waning minutes.

Driskel started last week against the Buccaneers but was limited to 176 yards and was sacked five times and intercepted once in Denver’s 28-10 loss.

He was replaced by Rypien on the Broncos’ final drive, and Rypien completed his first eight passes for 53 yards before throwing an interception in the end zone.

“Up until the last throw when he made a bad decision and a bad read, he played pretty good in there,” Fangio said. “So we want to see if that can continue.”

Rypien showed good enough recognition of defense alignments to change calls and protections and he was quicker throwing the ball than Driskel, who was sacked 11 times in the last two weeks.

“I’ve seen a lot of defenses,” said Rypien, who started 49 games in college. “I think that’s probably my best quality is being able to understand defenses and think fast and get the ball out.”

Rypien, who spent three weeks on Denver’s active roster last year and the rest of the season on the Broncos’ practice squad, will be the ninth QB to start for the Broncos since they won Super Bowl 50 in Peyton Manning’s final game, joining Trevor Siemien, Brock Osweiler, Paxton Lynch, Case Keenum, Flacco, Allen, Lock and Driskel.

INJURY EPIDEMIC: Fangio confirmed Tuesday that yet another starter was headed to injured reserve. This time it’s right tackle Elijah Wilkinson (shin), a day after five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jurrell Casey (biceps) was lost for the season.

Wilkinson will be replaced by 12th-year veteran Demar Dotson.

“He’s obviously an experienced player. He’s played right tackle 10,000 snaps in this league probably, so we feel good about putting him in there,” Fangio said.

Other starters on IR are: linebacker Von Miller (ankle), wide receiver Courtland Sutton (knee), cornerback A.J. Bouye (shoulder) and defensive end Dre’Mont Jones (knee). Backups on IR are: tight end Austin Fort (knee) and linebackers Justin Strnad (wrist) and Austin Calitro (hamstring).

The injured Broncos are making a combined $53.4 million this season, by far the highest IR payroll in the NFL and nearly $20 million more than the runner-up Dallas Cowboys ($33.5 million).

The NFL relaxed its IR rules this year on account of the COVID-19 pandemic and any player can be activated after three weeks. The Broncos didn’t place Lock on IR so he could continue to attend practice for so-called “mental reps.” He’s expected to miss a few more weeks.

BALTIMORE (AP) — It wasn’t just that Patrick Mahomes threw for a ton of yards and four touchdowns. Most impressive was how he did it.

Mahomes juked, danced, and jumped in and out of the pocket. Sometimes he just dropped back and fired pinpoint throws downfield. He tossed shovel passes and flung it sidearmed.

The common thread was that just about everything he did worked for the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, who rolled past the Baltimore Ravens 34-20 on Monday night.

Mahomes put on a scintillating show while outperforming Lamar Jackson, who’s 0-3 against the Chiefs and 21-1 against the rest of the NFL as a regular-season starting quarterback.

With Mahomes leading the way, the Chiefs (3-0) emphatically ended the Ravens’ 14-game regular-season winning streak while extending their own run to 12 games (including playoffs). Mahomes went 31 for 42 for 385 yards and averaged 6.5 yards on his four rushing attempts.

“They don’t give that guy a half-billion dollars for no reason,” Ravens defensive tackle Calais Campbell said. “He just made play after play. You’ve got to give him respect.”

Mahomes, who signed a 10-year, $503 million extension in July, gave the Chiefs their money’s worth on Monday night, surgically shredding a Baltimore defense that had allowed only two touchdowns in its first two games.

“You got to give credit to Pat for leading the charge. He stepped up big,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid said.

Mahomes was not intercepted, and avoided being sacked. The Chiefs led 27-10 at halftime and held on to defeat Baltimore (2-1) for the third year in a row.

“The plays we ran, we got in the right situations,” Mahomes said. “I thought guys executed at a very high level on those plays.”

In a duel between Mahomes, the 2018 NFL MVP, and the player who won that honor last year, Jackson was no match for the man whose resume also includes a Super Bowl MVP trophy.

Jackson completed 15 of 28 passes for 97 yards and ran for 83 yards, 30 of them on one carry during the Ravens’ opening possession. It wasn’t nearly enough against Mahomes, whose performance Jackson described in one word: “Outstanding.”

The Chiefs scored touchdowns on their first two possessions — one on a run by Mahomes, the other on a shovel pass&nbsp;to Anthony Sherman — for a 13-3 lead. Following that second score, Ravens rookie Devin Duvernay fielded the kickoff and sprinted down the right sideline&nbsp;for a 93-yard touchdown.

Kansas City followed with a three-and-out, but Baltimore simply could not contain Mahomes for long. After he got the ball back, Mahomes completed passes of 29 and 18 yards before hitting Tyreek Hill for a 20-yard score to cap a 73-yard drive.

A 49-yard touchdown pass&nbsp;from Mahomes to Mecole Hardman put the Chiefs up by 17 at halftime. The only other time Jackson trailed by that much at the break in an NFL game was last year, when the Chiefs held a 23-6 lead.

In this one, Kansas City pumped the brakes in the second half before Baltimore closed to 27-20. That’s when Mahomes showed why he’s the league’s highest-paid player and arguably the NFL’s best quarterback.

During a 13-play, 75-yard drive that produced the game-clinching score, Mahomes converted a third-and-5 with an 18-yard pass and ran for 12 yards on a third-and-10. He flipped a sidearm 12-yard pass to Sammy Watkins to set up a first-and-goal at the 2, from where Mahomes tossed a touchdown pass to appreciative tackle Eric Fisher with 8:14 remaining.

There were an estimated 250 people in the seats consisting of immediate family members of Ravens players, coaches and front office personnel. They were scattered in several sections behind the Baltimore sideline.

They were far more animated than the cardboard cutouts of people behind each end zone.

The Chiefs appeared to all stand on the sideline during the national anthem. The Ravens, on the other hand, offered a mixed bag of protests to call attention to social injustice: Some kneeled, including Jackson, some stood and a few others just sat on the bench.

Chiefs: CB L’Jarius Sneed was ruled out in the third quarter with a collarbone injury. ... DE Alex Okafor (hamstring) was inactive. ... G Andrew Wylie was inactive and went to the hospital with a stomach issue, but was OK, Reid said.

At a special meeting of the Stockton Unified School District No. 271 Board of Education, held on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020, after six executive sessions for the purpose of discussing personnel matters relating to supplemental staff were held and the board was back in open session, a motion was made by vice president Stephanie Niblock to remove Phil Conyac as head football coach effective immediately and to put Justin Basart as interim head high school football coach and Clint Bedore as interim assistant high school football coach, effective immediately. 

The motion was seconded by LeAnn Dix. The motion carried yes 6, (Stephanie Niblock, Aftan Tso, LeAnn Dix, Jesse Stithem, Daphne Plumer and Mark Billinger) no 0, and absent 1 (Linda Conyac). 

Those in attendance for the executive sessions were the six board members, Bill Lowry and Gary McCown.

🏈Phil Conyac removed as Stockton High School Football Coach



LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Bronze statues of legendary Kansas Football players John Hadl and Gale Sayers will be unveiled outside the Anderson Family Football Complex at halftime of the Jayhawks game on Oct. 3 vs. Oklahoma State. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event will not be open to the public to attend in-person, but fans will be able to watch the ceremony online through KUAthletics.com. For those fans in attendance for the game, the ceremony will be live streamed on the videoboard in-stadium.

Two of the greatest players to ever suit up for the Jayhawks, Hadl and Sayers become the first two Kansas Football representatives to have statues of their likeness on the University of Kansas campus. Each statue stands eight-feet tall if standing upright and weighs close to 1,000 pounds.

Hadl, who played at Kansas from 1959-61, etched his name into Jayhawk lore with three brilliant seasons. The first two-time All-American in program history, Hadl starred for the Jayhawks both as a quarterback and halfback. A three-time all-conference selection, Hadl finished his career with 1,281 passing yards and 1,016 rushing yards, on top of leading the nation in punting in 1959. He also shined as a defensive back and return specialist.

Hadl’s No. 21 jersey is one of three retired Kansas Football numbers, joining Sayers and Ray Evans. Hadl still holds the school record for longest interception return (98 yards vs. TCU in 1959) and longest punt (94 yards vs. Oklahoma in 1959).

The Jayhawks went 14-5-2 during Hadl’s junior and senior seasons and ranked nationally in the top 20 each season. Hadl’s dazzling career concluded by being named MVP of the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl and leading his team to a 33-7 win over Rice.

The Lawrence native is a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. After Kansas, Hadl also flourished in the NFL, enjoying a 16-year career and throwing for more than 33,000 yards. He was named NFL Man of the Year in 1971.

The statue of Hadl’s will stand next to the one of Sayers, who starred at Kansas one season after Hadl graduated.

Nicknamed the “Kansas Comet”, Sayers is widely known as one of the best running backs in the history of the game. A two-time All-America selection like Hadl, Sayers led Kansas in rushing, touchdowns and kickoff returns in all three of his seasons. He became the first player in NCAA Division I history to record a 99-yard run when he did it against Nebraska in 1963. Sayers also had a 96-yard dash a season prior against Oklahoma State, giving him the two longest runs in school history until 1997.

Sayers finished his Jayhawk career with 2,675 rushing yards and 3,917 all-purpose yards. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Following his Kansas career, Sayers was a first-round pick of the NFL’s Chicago Bears and the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.

While Sayers had an abbreviated seven-year NFL career that was cut short due to knee injuries, that didn’t stop him from making a major impact when healthy. He led the league in rushing in 1966 and 1969 and in 1977 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at age 34. Sayers, who passed away at age 77 on Wednesday, remains the youngest person ever selected to the NFL Hall of Fame.

The running back’s impact went far beyond the field, both during his time at Kansas and with the Bears. While with the Bears, Sayers was roommates with Brian Piccolo. The two became the first interracial roommates in the NFL and remained close friends until Piccolo passed away in 1970 of cancer.

Sayers, who also served as an assistant athletics director at Kansas from 1972-76, was also inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Minority Athletics Administration Hall of Fame in 2009.



LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Bronze statues of legendary Kansas Football players John Hadl and Gale Sayers will be unveiled outside the Anderson Family Football Complex at halftime of the Jayhawks game on Oct. 3 vs. Oklahoma State. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event will not be open to the public to attend in-person, but fans will be able to watch the ceremony online through KUAthletics.com. For those fans in attendance for the game, the ceremony will be live streamed on the videoboard in-stadium.Two of the greatest players to ever suit up for the Jayhawks, Hadl and Sayers become the first two Kansas Football representatives to have statues of their likeness on the University of Kansas campus. Each statue stands eight-feet tall if standing upright and weighs close to 1,000 pounds.Hadl, who played at Kansas from 1959-61, etched his name into Jayhawk lore with three brilliant seasons. The first two-time All-American in program history, Hadl starred for the Jayhawks both as a quarterback and halfback. A three-time all-conference selection, Hadl finished his career with 1,281 passing yards and 1,016 rushing yards, on top of leading the nation in punting in 1959. He also shined as a defensive back and return specialist.Hadl’s No. 21 jersey is one of three retired Kansas Football numbers, joining Sayers and Ray Evans. Hadl still holds the school record for longest interception return (98 yards vs. TCU in 1959) and longest punt (94 yards vs. Oklahoma in 1959).The Jayhawks went 14-5-2 during Hadl’s junior and senior seasons and ranked nationally in the top 20 each season. Hadl’s dazzling career concluded by being named MVP of the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl and leading his team to a 33-7 win over Rice.The Lawrence native is a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. After Kansas, Hadl also flourished in the NFL, enjoying a 16-year career and throwing for more than 33,000 yards. He was named NFL Man of the Year in 1971.The statue of Hadl’s will stand next to the one of Sayers, who starred at Kansas one season after Hadl graduated.Nicknamed the “Kansas Comet”, Sayers is widely known as one of the best running backs in the history of the game. A two-time All-America selection like Hadl, Sayers led Kansas in rushing, touchdowns and kickoff returns in all three of his seasons. He became the first player in NCAA Division I history to record a 99-yard run when he did it against Nebraska in 1963. Sayers also had a 96-yard dash a season prior against Oklahoma State, giving him the two longest runs in school history until 1997.Sayers finished his Jayhawk career with 2,675 rushing yards and 3,917 all-purpose yards. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Following his Kansas career, Sayers was a first-round pick of the NFL’s Chicago Bears and the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.While Sayers had an abbreviated seven-year NFL career that was cut short due to knee injuries, that didn’t stop him from making a major impact when healthy. He led the league in rushing in 1966 and 1969 and in 1977 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at age 34. Sayers, who passed away at age 77 on Wednesday, remains the youngest person ever selected to the NFL Hall of Fame.The running back’s impact went far beyond the field, both during his time at Kansas and with the Bears. While with the Bears, Sayers was roommates with Brian Piccolo. The two became the first interracial roommates in the NFL and remained close friends until Piccolo passed away in 1970 of cancer.Sayers, who also served as an assistant athletics director at Kansas from 1972-76, was also inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Minority Athletics Administration Hall of Fame in 2009.

KANSAS CITY, M0. - Royals shortstop&nbsp;Adalberto Mondesi&nbsp;was named American League Player of the Week for the period of September 21-27, a stretch in which he hit a Major League-best .615 (16-for-26) in seven games.

Mondesi is the first Royals player to win the award since&nbsp;Jorge Soler&nbsp;from August 5-11, 2019, and he’s just the second Royals shortstop to earn American League weekly honors, joining&nbsp;Mike Aviles&nbsp;from July 28-August 3, 2008.

Mondesi led the Majors in runs (10), hits (16), stolen bases (5), batting average (.615), on-base percentage (.655), slugging percentage (1.154) and OPS (1.809) during the final week of the season, in which he led the Royals to a 5-2 record. Mondesi also tied for the American League lead with eight extra-base hits and his eight RBI were two shy of the American league lead.

Mondesi recorded a hit in nine consecutive at-bats over a three-game span last Thursday through Saturday, falling one hit shy of the club record of 10 straight hits held by&nbsp;Joe Randa&nbsp;from June 8-12, 1999. Mondesi also walked twice during that stretch to reach safely in 11 consecutive plate appearances, matching the club record previously done by Randa (June 8-12, 1999),&nbsp;Steve Braun&nbsp;(August 7-17, 1978) and&nbsp;Amos Otis&nbsp;(April 30-May 2, 1970).

Mondesi finished the season with multiple hits and at least one RBI in each of his last five games, matching the club record done seven times and last by&nbsp;Eric Hosmer&nbsp;from May 27-31, 2016. This stretch was tied for the second longest in the Majors this season, one game shy of&nbsp;Jared Walsh’s&nbsp;six-game run from September 10-16. Mondesi also had multiple extra-base hits in each of his last three games, matching the club record done eight times and last by&nbsp;Mike Sweeney&nbsp;from May 1-4, 2005.

On Thursday, Mondesi recorded his third career game with four hits and two steals, which are the second most such games in the Majors since 2010, one behind&nbsp;Ichiro Suzuki. He followed that up on Friday by falling a homer shy of the cycle with two stolen bases. In doing so, he became the first Royals player with three hits and multiple steals in consecutive games, and one of three players to do this in the Majors since 2010, joining&nbsp;Elvis Andrus&nbsp;(August 6-7, 2013) and&nbsp;Mike Trout&nbsp;(June 8-9, 2012). MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Three Kansas State football players - Skylar Thompson, Jahron McPherson and Deuce Vaughn - have been named Big 12 Players of the week following the Wildcats' come-from-behind victory at No. 3 Oklahoma, the conference office announced Monday.

Thompson and McPherson were co-winners of the offensive and defensive awards, respectively, while Vaughn picked up Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors. It marked the first time since the 2015 West Virginia game that K-State had three conference weekly award winners.

The trio helped the Wildcats earn their first-ever road win over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. Additionally, K-State rallied from a 21-point deficit to tie a school record that had been achieved four other times, but it was the latest start to the comeback among those five victories.

Thompson, a native of Independence, Missouri, earned his third career weekly conference honor as he was named the newcomer of the week after the Oklahoma State and Iowa State games in 2017. Thompson threw for a career-high 334 yards and had four total touchdowns, including three rushing scores. He connected on 18-of-25 passes, which included a 39-yard touchdown to&nbsp;Chabastin Taylor&nbsp;and a pair of long connects with Vaughn (77) and&nbsp;Keyon Mozee&nbsp;(78) that set up his own rushing scores.

A product of Basehor, Kansas, McPherson carded 11 tackles – including one for a loss – a forced fumble that led to a touchdown on the ensuing Wildcat drive and a game-clinching interception with 34 seconds remaining. McPherson, who was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, is the first Wildcat since at least 2002 to total double-digit tackles, a TFL, a forced fumble and an interception in a single game.

Vaughn, a true freshman running back from Round Rock, Texas, had 174 all-purpose yards, which was highlighted by 129 receiving yards on four catches and a game-tying 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He became the first Wildcat running back in 50 years and fifth overall to record a 100-yard receiving game, the last being Henry Hawthorne at Oklahoma in 1970. It was also the most receiving yards by a true freshman running back in Big 12 history and tied for the fifth most by any running back since the conference’s inception in 1996.

Kansas State is back in action this Saturday as it hosts Texas Tech inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game is slated for a 2:30 p.m., kickoff and will be shown on FS1.

DENVER (AP) — Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes and Shaq Barrett celebrated his homecoming with a pair of sacks, one for a safety, in Tampa Bay’s 28-10 victory over the winless Denver Broncos on Sunday.

With his first road win for the Bucs (2-1), Brady evened his career record against the Broncos at 9-9 with just his fifth win in a dozen trips to Denver.

Before Sunday, the Broncos were the only team in the NFL with a winning record against the six-time Super Bowl champion.

This also marked the first time since in almost a decade — Nov. 14-21, 2010 — that the Buccaneers won back-to-back games by 14 or more points.

The Broncos (0-3) completed a second straight winless September under head coach Vic Fangio, who donned a face shield a la Andy Reid after getting fined $100,000 for failing to wear a face&nbsp;mask last week.

Barrett, who led the league last year with 19½ sacks in his first season in Tampa, picked up his first sacks of this season in the city where he played from 2014-18 after starring at Colorado State.

His second sack of Jeff Driskel, who started in place of Drew Lock (shoulder), came in the end zone for a safety that pushed the Bucs’ lead to 25-10.

Afterward, Barrett performed the signature sack dance of Bradley Chubb, a friendly jab at the 2018 first-round pick whose selection helped Barrett decide to leave Denver after that season.

With his full complement of receivers finally available, Brady looked like the methodical QB he was for two decades in New England, driving the Buccaneers on scoring drives on four of five first-half drives.

Chris Godwin caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in his return from a concussion before leaving in the second half with a hamstring injury and Mike Evans had two 1-yard TD grabs as the Bucs took a 23-10 halftime lead.

And just days after insisting he was in Tampa to serve as “a blocking tight end,” Rob Gronkowski caught six passes for 48 yards after getting shut out last week and coming into the game with just two receptions for 11 yards.

Denver special teams coach Tom McMahon, who described his unit’s play at Pittsburgh as “one word: terrible,” won’t need a Thesaurus for this one.

Sam Martin, who fumbled away the snap for a costly safety against the Steelers, was blocked on his first punt Sunday when rookie long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer didn’t rise out of his stance fast enough to block Patrick O’Connor.

O'Connor swept past the snapper to block the punt, then&nbsp; recovered the ball at the Broncos 10-yard line. Three plays later, Godwin reached over the goal line for Tampa Bay’s first score.

After a trio of three-and-outs and a field-goal drive, Driskel suddenly did an imitation of Brady and drove the Broncos 75 yards in eight plays, hitting Tim Patrick from 7 yards with 14 seconds left in the half to pull the Broncos to 23-10.

But Driskel, who fell to 1-8 as a starter in the pros, gave way to Brett Rypien in the fourth quarter with the score 28-10. He completed his first eight passes for 53 yards before Mike Edwards stepped in front of Jerry Jeudy at the goal line for a one-handed interception on fourth-and-1 from the 13.

Bucs’ WR Godwin left with a hamstring injury in the second half and CB Sean Murphy-Bunting was ruled out with a groin/hamstring injury.

In addition to the 5,700 fans that were allowed into Empower Field, the Broncos put more than 1,800 cardboard cutouts of the characters from "South Park" in the south stands&nbsp;on Sunday. Cartman, Kenny et. al were masked up and socially distanced just like the real fans in the lower four levels of the Broncos’ 77,000-seat stadium.

Brady lamented during the week that he wouldn’t get to face Von Miller, who is out indefinitely after a freak ankle injury.

“I’ve played a lot of meaningful games against him and there is nobody that’s more of an incredible player than him,” Brady said, adding that Miller is “as good of a player as there is on the defensive side of the ball in NFL history. He’s just exceptional in every way.”

🏈 Brady, Barrett lead Buccaneers past Broncos

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer finished his rookie season with a stellar performance, Alex Gordon wrapped up his long Royals career with a fond farewell and Kansas City ended its season Sunday with a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Adalberto Mondesi and Ryan McBroom homered for the Royals, who finished just above the Tigers in the AL Central in their first season under manager Mike Matheny.

“My regrets are that we have we don’t have 100 more games, because with what we are starting to put in place, the building blocks of a winning team, you are starting to see those come together,” Matheny said.

The Royals finished the season going 12-6 in an 18-game stretch to end the year, which was one of the best in the AL in that span.

Kansas City (26-34 ) has been fourth in the division in back-to-back seasons. The Royals haven’t reached postseason play since winning the World Series in 2015.

Detroit (23-35) finished last for the fourth time in six years. Lloyd McClendon wound up the season as the Tigers’ manager after Ron Gardenhire retired on Sept. 19.

“They gave us everything they had every day,” McClendon said.

“Some days were better than others, and that happens with young players, but they’re learning what preparation is all about and what it takes to get to the next level,” he said.

Gordon played the final game of his career and got a touching send-off.

“I grew up as a little kid just wanting to play this game,” the 36-year-old Gordon said. “I’m pretty fortunate to do it as long as I have.”

After striking out in the first, he took his spot in left field to begin the second. Gordon was then pulled and trotted off, hugging teammates and a Tigers opponent, and waving to his family watching in a private box at Kauffman Stadium.

Gordon retires as one of three players in Royals history to play 14 or more seasons with the franchise. Only Frank White and George Brett had longer tenures in Kansas City. Gordon won seven Gold Gloves.

Singer (4-5) allowed one run, on Brandon Dixon’s double, on three hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked none.
