INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Harrison Butker kicked a 58-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in overtime, and the Kansas City Chiefs survived a superlative first start by rookie Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert to beat Los Angeles 23-20 on Sunday.

Butker’s game-winner was his third field goal of the day and his second from 58 yards, which tied a Chiefs record for distance. He nailed a 30-yarder on the final play of regulation.

In overtime, Butker sent the ball through the uprights from 53 yards, but KC was called for a false start. Then the Chargers called timeout, giving him a rehearsal kick from 58 that he also made before the one that counted.

Patrick Mahomes completed less than half of his passes in the first half for only the third time in his career but rallied to finish 27 of 47 for 302 yards and two touchdowns. Tyreek Hill (five catches, 99 yards) and Travis Kelce (nine receptions, 90 yards) each had TD receptions.

Playing their first game at SoFi Stadium, the Chargers (1-1) won the coin toss in overtime but went three-and-out. The Chiefs (2-0) got the ball at their 21 and went 39 yards in 13 plays.

Herbert was 22 of 33 for 311 yards with a touchdown and interception, becoming the ninth quarterback since the merger to have a 300-yard game in his NFL debut.

Herbert, the sixth overall pick in April’s draft, got the call after Tyrod Taylor re-aggravated a rib injury during pregame warmups. Coach Anthony Lynn said he found out just before the coin toss that Taylor was unable to play and that Taylor was taken to a hospital.

Herbert passed and rushed for touchdowns in the first half, becoming the first player since Bob Clatterbuck of the New York Giants in 1954 to do that in his debut. He joined Cam Newton and Otto Graham as the only QB’s to throw for 300 yards and have a rushing TD in their first game.

The defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs beat the Chargers for the 12th time in 13 meetings.

After Hill’s 55-yard touchdown and 2-point conversion to tie it with 12:58 remaining in the fourth quarter, Herbert and the Chargers went on a 10-minute drive, resulting in Michael Badgley’s 23-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining.

Badgley’s 41-yard kick midway through the third quarter extended the Chargers’ lead to 17-6 before the Chiefs rallied to tie it. Butker’s first 58-yarder pulled them within eight.

Herbert’s only ill-advised throw came late in the third quarter when he was picked off by L’Jarius Snead deep in Chiefs territory instead of taking the rushing yards on a scramble.

Kansas City took advantage, driving 95 yards in six plays. Mahomes rolled left and connected with Hill, who caught it at the LA 6 before getting into the end zone.

Herbert drove the Chargers 79 yards in eight plays after the opening kickoff, culminating in a 4-yard rollout off right end. It was the first rushing TD by a Chargers QB in nine years.

The Chargers ran the ball on their first two plays before Herbert’s first pass was incomplete. He then completed a 35-yard screen pass to Joshua Kelley. Herbert also completed a 16-yard pass to a diving Austin Ekeler to move it to the KC 4.

Ekeler had 148 scrimmage yards, including 93 rushing, and Keenan Allen caught seven passes for 96 yards.

Kansas City got on the board midway through the second quarter when Mahomes found Travis Kelce in the back right corner of the end zone for a 10-yard score. Jerry Tillery blocked the extra-point attempt.

Herbert made it 14-6 with a 14-yard bullet to Jalen Guyton with 2:30 remaining in the first half.

Chiefs: Defensive end Frank Clark (illness), cornerback Antonio Hamilton (groin) and running back Darrel Williams (ankle) left the game.

Chargers: OT Bryan Bulaga suffered a knee injury during the first quarter and did not return. Defensive end Justin Jones (shoulder) and safety Jalen Watkins (groin) were injured in the second half.

Chiefs: Travel to Baltimore for a matchup of the last two NFL MVPs on Monday, Sept. 28. Mahomes has won both games against reigning MVP Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

Chargers: Host the Carolina Panthers next Sunday. Los Angeles is 8-4 against NFC teams under coach Anthony Lynn.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A game seemingly in hand suddenly on the cusp of slipping away, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t overthink things. His team’s defense is built on one principle: attack.

Needing a stop to turn back the surprisingly resilient Denver Broncos, the Steelers dialed up one final blitz in an afternoon filled with them.

Safety Terrell Edmunds raced in unblocked to take down Denver backup quarterback Jeff Driskel on fourth-and-2 at the Pittsburgh 15 with less than two minutes to play to preserve a 26-21 victory Sunday. The sack was Pittsburgh’s seventh of the day.

“That’s just the code we live by,” Tomlin said, later adding, “I wouldn’t necessarily call it a game plan, it’s just our personality.”

A personality his team believes can carry it into January and beyond. There’s still plenty to work on; the Steelers (2-0) committed 10 penalties and turned it over twice.

So the Broncos (0-2) hung around despite losing starting quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) in the first quarter.

Driskel led an unlikely comeback despite taking six sacks and absorbing 17 hits. Denver trailed by 14 points at halftime and 12 in the fourth quarter — but was 15 yards away from a stunning upset before Edmunds came off the edge and sent Driskel to the turf one last time.

“I thought in lieu of all the circumstances, going against a good defense, I thought (Driskel) did an admirable job and he’ll only get better if we have to continue with him,” Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said.

Lock wore a sling over his right arm following a very strange case of deja vu. He missed three months in 2019 after injuring his right thumb while stumbling to avoid a sack.

Midway through the first quarter he was tripped up in the backfield by linebacker T.J. Watt and staggered to his right before linebacker Bud Dupree crashed on top of him, driving Lock’s throwing shoulder into the ground.

“I fell on it weird,” said Lock. “I tried to tuck it last second.”

Instead, he fumbled. The Steelers recovered and went downfield for a touchdown while Lock was in the blue medical tent getting evaluated. He attempted to throw the ball but it “felt funny.”

Driskel completed 18 of 34 for 256 yards with two touchdowns and a pick and absorbed that serious pounding. Still, he had the Broncos in position to win it until Edmunds’ No. 34 swallowed him up with the game on the line.

Tomlin will take a somewhat ugly win over the alternative.

“We understand early in the season we’re not going to be perfect (but) we were good enough to win,” Tomlin said.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 311 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in his second game back from right elbow surgery. The 38 year old connected on 29 of 41 passes, including a rainbow down the left sideline to rookie Chase Claypool that turned into an 84-yard touchdown.

Still, he wasn’t exactly thrilled on a day the Steelers never trailed but struggled to put the Broncos away.

“The good news is when you play poorly and you still win the football game, that’s something to be thankful (for),” Roethlisberger said. “I just need to trust myself making the throws. The guys are in the right spot.”

🏈 Steelers knock out Lock, hold off Driskel, Broncos

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Daniel Vogelbach belted a pair of homers and drove in all five runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Sunday to sweep the three-game interleague matchup.

Vogelbach, claimed by the Brewers off waivers earlier this month, hit a two-run home run to straightaway center with two outs in the first off Brad Keller (4-3). He blasted a three-run opposite-field shot to chase Keller in the sixth. Vogelbach has three home runs since joining the Brewers and five on the season.

Vogelbach had a chance to do even more damage but struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh in a seven-pitch at-bat.

Milwaukee closed out the regular-season schedule at Miller Park in what was possibly the final home game in a Brewers uniform for Ryan Braun, the 2007 NL Rookie of the Year and the 2011 MVP who has spent his entire 14-year career with the franchise. Braun, who will turn 37 in November, is in the final guaranteed year of a five-year, $105-million contract extension signed in 2011.

The Brewers improved to 26-26 with their fourth consecutive win and reached the .500 mark for the first time since they were 11-11.

Josh Lindblom (2-3), who was reinstated from the bereavement list prior to the start of the game, turned in another effective outing for the Brewers. He gave up one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts and no walks.

Lindblom tossed five shutout innings on Monday in a no-decision against St. Louis and also made two scoreless relief appearances between starts.

Josh Hader retired the lone batter he faced to notch his 10th save in 12 tries after Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Brent Suter to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Royals plated their first run in the sixth on Whit Merrifield’s RBI groundout.

Keller, who pitched a five-hit shutout in an 11-0 win in his previous start on Sept. 13 against Pittsburgh, gave up five hits and five runs in five innings.

Royals: 2B Nicky Lopez was briefly shaken up after Christian Yelich slid into his left leg while breaking up a double-play attempt in the first. Lopez remained in the game.

BREWERS: Placed OF Ben Gamel on 10-day injured list with a left quadriceps injury. …Braun, who has been dealing with lower back stiffness, started at DH with Vogelbach playing first.

Royals: RHP Carlos Hernández (0-0, 3.86) will make his second career start with Kansas City opening a three-game set at home against St. Louis. Hernandez didn’t earn a decision in his first career outing, a Royals’ 7-4 win over Pittsburgh on Sept. 12, in which he allowed three runs on three hits, all solo homers, in three innings.

Brewers: RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-4, 3.45) will take the mound as Milwaukee begins a three-game series at Cincinnati. Woodruff is 3-2 with a 4.25 ERA in seven career games (five starts) against the Reds.

⚾ Vogelbach belts two homers as Brewers down Royals

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers’ long wait for a shiny new home ends on Sunday when they play their first game in SoFi Stadium. Their first guest though could dampen the housewarming.

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs have won 11 of the past 12 in the series and have taken the past six as the road team. Kansas City also looks primed for a repeat run after a convincing 34-20 victory over the Houston Texans in its opener.

The Chiefs have also won 10 straight overall, going back to last season. Coincidentally, their winning streak began with a 24-17 victory over the Chargers in Mexico City.

“They have weapons everywhere,” said Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward. “They have the best QB in the league. They have too many weapons over there but we have weapons too. We know they are big-play hunting so we have to eliminate those.”

The Chargers’ defense has contained Patrick Mahomes at times, but it hasn’t translated to wins. As much as Mahomes has dominated the league in his first two years as a starter, he has been even better in September. He has won all seven of his starts the first month of the season with 26 touchdowns and no interceptions. He has thrown for more than 300 yards in all but one game and has three-plus TDs in all seven.

Trying to get an upper hand over Kansas City is why Los Angeles signed defensive tackle Linval Joseph and cornerback Chris Harris as well as trading up into the first round to take linebacker Kenneth Murray.

“They played us really well last year, that defense, holding us to some low numbers, stuff that we had been trending on getting better numbers, better scores, and all of that different type of stuff,” Mahomes said. “They have a really good defense and a really good scheme. We have to do our best job of being within ourselves and finding a way to put points on the board.”

The Chargers, who are coming off a 16-13 win at Cincinnati, have had a couple of walk-through practices at SoFi Stadium. Coach Anthony Lynn said he thinks they have a familiarity of their new surroundings, which hopefully will help early.

“It seems like the waiting time has gone fast,” said Lynn, who is hoping to direct the Bolts to their first 2-0 start in eight years.

Someone else eager to see the new venue is Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who is a Los Angeles native.

“I think it is great for the City of Angels. I’m happy for them to have a beautiful stadium like that,” he said. “The Coliseum is great in their own right, but this one here is a modern day deal and it looks beautiful.”

Los Angeles has a minus-15 turnover differential in its past six games against Kansas City. The Chargers have committed 17 turnovers in those games with the Chiefs converting those into 58 points (seven touchdowns, three field goals).

“It’s ridiculous how many times we have given it away and we have only taken it away twice,” Lynn said. “You’re just not gonna beat this team that way. So that’s, that’s been our primary focus.”

Chiefs rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire became the youngest player to rush for 130 or more yards and a TD last week.

Running backs coach Deland McCullough said he expects the first-round pick to take even bigger steps this week.

“It’s just the amount of growth that happens from your first full game to your second one, so that’s the part that I’m excited about, that we’re all excited about is,” McCullough said. “I mean, he’s really grown a lot. You’re talking about just from last game to the next practice that we had a few days ago just learning and being able to see on tape.”

Chargers defensive lineman Uchenna Nwosu said Edwards-Helaire has excellent jump-cutting ability, but is also aided by running behind a veteran offensive line.

Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor had a league-low 53.3 percent completion rate last week, but he didn’t commit any turnovers. The points of emphasis this week have been on trying to be more productive on first and second downs in order to stay ahead of the chains.

“They’re going to do a number of different things. But it’s up to us to stay focused on the things that we’re practicing throughout this week and staying true to our game plan,” he said.

The Chiefs will be without their top two cornerbacks to match up against Chargers receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Bashaud Breeland is serving a four-game suspension for off-field issues and Charvarius Ward broke his hand in the opener.

Rashad Fenton, who is in his second season, is in line for his first start after playing in 12 games last season while fourth-round pick L’Jarius Sneed had an interception in his NFL debut.

Allen has 61 receptions against the Chiefs, which is his second-most against an opponent. Williams has been a matchup problem for Kansas City in the past and is averaging 16.9 yards per catch.

Besides preaching turnovers, the Chargers have been stressing trying to apply consistent pressure on Mahomes.

According to Statradar, Mahomes was blitzed nearly 40% of the time by Houston but the Texans were only able to apply pressure on 12% of his dropbacks. Los Angeles got three sacks against Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow last week but all of those came in the first half as the Bengals went to a shorter passing game.

That could be a problem again this week as Mahomes has one of the quickest releases in the league.

Kansas City also looks primed for a repeat run after a convincing 34-20 victory over the Houston Texans in its opener.The Chiefs have also won 10 straight overall, going back to last season. Coincidentally, their winning streak began with a 24-17 victory over the Chargers in Mexico City.“They have weapons everywhere,” said Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward. “They have the best QB in the league. They have too many weapons over there but we have weapons too. As much as Mahomes has dominated the league in his first two years as a starter, he has been even better in September. Bashaud Breeland is serving a four-game suspension for off-field issues and Charvarius Ward broke his hand in the opener.Rashad Fenton, who is in his second season, is in line for his first start after playing in 12 games last season while fourth-round pick L’Jarius Sneed had an interception in his NFL debut.Allen has 61 receptions against the Chiefs, which is his second-most against an opponent. Williams has been a matchup problem for Kansas City in the past and is averaging 16.9 yards per catch.UNDER PRESSUREBesides preaching turnovers, the Chargers have been stressing trying to apply consistent pressure on Mahomes.According to Statradar, Mahomes was blitzed nearly 40% of the time by Houston but the Texans were only able to apply pressure on 12% of his dropbacks. Los Angeles got three sacks against Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow last week but all of those came in the first half as the Bengals went to a shorter passing game.That could be a problem again this week as Mahomes has one of the quickest releases in the league.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The pain was familiar to Ben Roethlisberger.

And the best part about how his 38-year-old Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback’s body felt following his first game in 364 days might have been the fact none of the pain originated from his surgically repaired right elbow.

Roethlisberger is hopeful the saga of his extended comeback came to an end in northern New Jersey last Monday, when he tossed three touchdowns in a relatively solid and mistake-free 26-16 victory over the New York Giants.

From here on out, he expects the focus to be on football, though that may be impossible heading into Pittsburgh’s home opener against Denver (0-1) on Sunday.

Rather than strictly preparing for the Broncos, Roethlisberger and the organization found itself spending a portion of the week facing questions about team unity after left tackle Alejandro Villanueva chose to honor a fallen US Army veteran on the back of his helmet rather than a Black Pittsburgh teenager killed by a white East Pittsburgh police officer in 2018, as the rest of the team did in New York. It was a move that caught Roethlisberger and defensive tackle Cameron Heyward — both longtime captains — off guard.

It got to the point that Steelers president Art Rooney II issued a statement&nbsp;saying he was “proud” of the efforts of the players to “bring awareness and changes to combat racism and social injustice” while acknowledging “we understand that individually we may say or do things that are not universally accepted.”

Denver’s issues are more muted by comparison. The Broncos let a winnable game against Tennessee slip away on Monday night when the Titans drove down the field late to pull out a 16-14 victory.

Still, there were tangible signs of things to get excited about as Denver hopes to gain traction in head coach Vic Fangio’s second season.

Quarterback Drew Lock completed 22 of 33 passes for 216 yards with a touchdown and zero interceptions. The 23-year-old has also proven difficult to take down. He’s been sacked just five times in six career starts and he’ll need to escape Pittsburgh’s fierce pass rush — and do it while taking care of the ball — if the Broncos want to extend their recent mastery over the Steelers. Denver has won four of the past five meetings with a list of victorious quarterbacks that includes Tim Tebow and Case Keenum.

Lock does have one thing in his favor: Hall of Fame offensive line coach Mike Munchak. The popular Munchak served in the same capacity for the Steelers from 2014-18 before leaving for Denver to be closer to his family. Heyward called Munchak “the ultimate spy.”

“Hopefully we can prove the point that we have a great O-line while blocking those guys up to give me time back there,” Lock said. “If that’s what we do, then we’re going to be a good football team.”

A victory at an empty Heinz Field would be a good starting point.

JEUDY, JEUDY: First-round pick Jerry Jeudy tied Malcom Butler in knots and repeatedly gained separation in the opener. He caught four passes for 56 yards but the only thing he’ll remember from his debut is the pair of costly drops, one of which could have helped Denver salt away the win.

“Those two drops will probably help me not drop passes for the whole season,” said Jeudy, the 15th overall pick out of Alabama, where he was renowned as much for his good hands as his quick feet and crisp route-running.

BENNY SNELL FOOTBALL: Steelers running back Benny Snell Jr. arrived in Pittsburgh as a fourth-round pick in 2019 with a chip on his shoulder. That chip would sometimes grate in practice against a veteran defensive line. Snell has been decidedly quieter entering his second season, preferring to let his pads do the talking. They spoke loudly while he ran for a career-high 113 yards against the Giants after starter James Conner went down with an ankle injury. Conner’s status is uncertain, though Snell figures to have earned more playing time regardless.

TIME KEEPS SLIPPING: Fangio acknowledged 24 hours after the Broncos’ 16-14 loss to the Titans that he blew it by not calling a timeout in the closing seconds and preserving as much time as possible for his young, inexperienced offense. Fangio called it a one-off, so he’s not planning on changing procedure, however.

Last year, Fangio had an analytics expert in his ear in end-of-game situations but after a shakeup in that department this offseason, Fangio was on his own. He said his coaches can always chime in, but it’s apparent none of them did as the Broncos saved all three of their timeouts to use after Tennessee went ahead with 17 seconds left.

LINE SHUFFLE: Steelers right tackle Zach Banner’s transformation from shaggy prospect to NFL starter hit a massive bump when he tore the ACL in his right knee against the Giants, ending his season after less than four quarters. Chukwuma Okorafor, a third-round pick in 2018, will take over for Banner.

“We will miss him, but we also have confidence that Chuks will do the job,” Roethlisberger said. “It was a close battle I think from what I heard from Coach Tomlin. We will need Chuks to step up who has playing experience. We will expect him to great things.”

Rookie Kevin Dotson could make his first NFL start at guard with Pro Bowler David DeCastro dealing with a knee issue and veteran Stefen Wisniewski recovering from a chest injury.

🏈 Steelers, Roethlisberger eye 2-0 start vs. Lock, Broncos

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Corbin Burnes threw six solid innings of four-hit ball, Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer in Milwaukee’s four-run eighth inning and the Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 Saturday night.

With the win, Milwaukee moved into a tie with the Cincinnati Reds, one game behind second-place St. Louis in the NL Central. The top two teams in each division qualify for the postseason.

“It’s cliché. It’s simple, but you win games, and you feel pretty good about your chances,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said after his team matched their season-high with three consecutive victories. “We’ve just got to keep doing it.”

Burnes continues as the best starting pitcher on the Brewers’ staff. He is 4-0 in his last five starts, with 47 strikeouts and six walks in that span. Against the Royals, he struck out nine.

“It’s always nice to play meaningful baseball this late in September,” Burnes said. “I think we’re still a game out of the postseason or whatever it may be, but just to know that if you win two, three, four in a row — rattle a couple of wins, you’re in the postseason.”

The Royals best scoring chance against Burnes came with two out in the second when they got a runner to third. Burnes caught Ryan O’Hearn looking at a called third strike to get out of the jam.

“That was pretty good stuff today,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said of Burnes. “Life on the fastball. You can tell he had some deception. He was hiding the ball well. The cutter he was throwing backdoor to lefties, and chasing righties off the plate.”

Braun foiled Matheny’s strategy of issuing an intentional walk to Christian Yelich with two out and a runner already on. Braun followed with his 351st home run. He had left Friday night’s game with low back tightness and was a game-time decision.

Devin Williams retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth, including four strike outs. He has 47 strikeouts in 23 innings of relief.

Drew Rasmussen, who picked up his first major-league win with an inning of relief in Friday night’s 9-5 win, retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the shutout.

Jacob Nottingham’s two-base hit off Royals reliever Scott Barlow in the eighth tacked on a big insurance run. Orlando Arcia singled and took third on Barlow’s errant pickoff throw.

Kris Bubic (1-6) allowed just a hit and an unearned run in 5 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old left-hander struck out seven, but tied his season-high with four walks, including two in the third that led to the Brewers’ only run.

“His best, his best, yet,” Matheny said of Bubic’s pitching effort. “That’s just one of those indicators of things to come, where he’s controlling the strike zone with the fastball early on. That was, without question, the best breaking ball he’s had so far.”

Luis Urías walked and scored on a throwing error by second baseman Nicky Lopez. Shortstop Adalberto Mondesi got in the way as Lopez fielded Avisaíl García’s roller up the middle. Lopez stepped on second, but then threw wildly to first.

“Either one of them make that play, if they communicate to each other,” Matheny said of Mondesi and Lopez’s miscommunication.

BREWERS: Braun left Friday night’s game with lower back tightness after hitting a single in the fourth inning. Braun has battled a lower back issue all season. However, he felt good enough for manager Craig Counsell to pencil him in at DH in Saturday’s game.

POSITIVE COVID-19 TESTS AT BREWERS ALTERNATE SITE

The Brewers had two players and a staff member test positive for the coronavirus at their alternate training site in Appleton, Wisconsin. Milwaukee president of baseball operations David Stearns confirmed the positive results and said they shouldn’t impact the major league team. Teams are using alternate training sites this season to keep reserve players sharp because the minor league season was canceled due to the pandemic. Stearns said the positive tests came Monday and did not name the two players or the staff member. Players must give their permission for their names to be revealed after positive tests.

Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy, 61, returned to the club Friday, almost seven weeks after suffering a heart attack during a team workout at Miller Park on Aug. 1. He will travel with the team on its season-ending road trip to Cincinnati and St. Louis.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs put an end to their five-game
losing streak against the Plainville Cardinals and won their second straight
game Friday night in Plainville 20-13.

The Monarchs opened the football game on offense and the Monarchs
overcame a handful penalties and put together a 12-play drive that was capped
off with a 31-yard Jace Wentling field goal to give TMP a lead with 6:13 to
play in the first quarter.

On Plainville’s opening drive came to an abrupt end on a fumble,

resulted in a 18 yard touchdown pass from Ethan Hamilton to Parker Krobe. But

After TMP lost a fumble in on their next drive Plainville
gave it right back on a turnover on downs.

The Monarchs used the short field to their advantage covering
43 yards in just a minute and a half with Kade Harris scoring on a 20-yard touchdown
run that, with the extra point, put TMP up 10-6.

Late in the second quarter the Monarchs were to get back
into field range after a roughing the passer penalty with no time on the clock.
Wentling connected on his second 31-yard field goal to give TMP a 13-6 halftime
lead.

&nbsp;In the third quarter
TMP’s Bryce Seib returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown giving TMP a
20-6 lead.

Plainville was able to get on the board in the fourth
quarter to cut the deficit to 20-13 but the Monarchs were able to get an
interception and forced a turnover on downs late in the game securing the TMP victory.

TMP quarterback Kade Harris completed 7-of-16 passes for 130
yards.

Plainville’s Kyle Werner rushed for 155 yards on 21 carries.

The Monarchs improved to 2-1 with the win while Plainville

HAYS - Hays played at home for the first time in 2020 taking on the Liberal Redskins. Three plays into the game the Indians had recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown on a 47 yard pass from Dylan Dreiling to Jordan Dale. The entire sequence took a total of fifty-four seconds.

Hays could not expand upon the lead until the second quarter when Dreiling took a hand off from Dale for a 16 yard score and a 14-0 lead. Liberal did cut the deficit in half with a three yard score two minutes later that was set up by a thirty yard run.

Leading 14-7 Hays punted the ball away but took it right back three plays later on a Dalton Dale interception. The turnover started the next Indian series at the 22 yard line and three plays later Jordan Dale scored from two yards out from the quarterback position and a 21-7 advantage into halftime.

Hays gutted through some second half injuries scoring six points on a Dreiling three yard run in the third quarter and a 27-7 lead. That would be the end of the scoring Hays. Liberal had their best chance of the third quarter to score following an 82 yard punt return to the two yard line. The drive however started at the twenty because of a penalty and the Redskins fumbled on their first play of the drive.

Liberal would not add any points until the final seconds when they scored on a 40 yard run. Their two point conversion failed leaving the Indians with a 27-13 win.

More than four hundred individuals registered to bid on one of the 289 online auction items. The 409 bidders included Tiger supporters from 13 states - Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the Tiger fans for their incredible generosity during these challenging times," said Director of Athletics Curtis Hammeke.

Tiger Nation showed up in full force to support Auction Item #40, an annual donation initiative with funds directed toward specific needs or improvements for the department of athletics. This year the money given to Item #40 will go directly to support the operational funds of the department due to the loss/reduction of typical revenue streams. The Tiger faithful contributed an incredible $150,772.12 to Item #40.

Donations for Item #40 are accepted throughout the year. They are 100% tax deductible and can be paid in installments through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021. Individuals or businesses interested in donating can contact the athletics office at (785) 628-4050 to set up a gift.

"Although the online route wasn't the way we planned to conduct the auction this year, it was a great learning experience and was a great way to get Tiger fans from all over the country involved," said assistant athletic director Matt Cook. La Crosse football game vs Ness City canceled due to COVID concerns



KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA Athletics Administrators Committee (AAC) has approved 2021 conference schedules for the fall sports of football, volleyball and women's soccer, released Friday (Sept. 18) by the league office. All three schedules are duplicates of the original 2020 slates that were approved prior to the NCAA's reduction in maximum number of contests for the 2020-21 academic year. Complete schedules for all three sports can be found by clicking on the attached links.

The Tiger football team will host six games during its 11-game all-conference schedule, including a season-opening home game against Northwest Missouri State and other home games against rivals Nebraska-Kearney, Emporia State and Pittsburg State. Game times will be announced at a later date.

Tiger volleyball will gear up for another&nbsp;double-round robin conference schedule, playing each of the other 10 conference schools twice, once at home and once on the road. The Tigers open the conference schedule at home against Washburn and wrap up their home schedule against Central Missouri. Game times and non-conference opponents are to be determined.

The women's soccer team will play five of its 11 official conference contests at home in addition to opening the season against Emporia State and Nebraska-Kearney in non-conference, in-region contests. After back-to-back weeks of home league matches to open the month of October, the Tigers will hit the road for five-straight contests before returning to FHSU Soccer Stadium for Senior Day against Washburn.&nbsp;Game times and non-conference opponents are to be determined.

MIAA unveils 2021 schedules for fall sports

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp;- Following a regular scheduled
KSHSAA Executive Board and Board of Directors meeting, Sept. 15 and 16,
multiple adjustments have been made to the fall postseason for KSHSAA
activities.

A brief synopsis by activity is
provided below. Further detail will be in the official publication of the
minutes to be posted at kshsaa.org next week.

Cross Country: The number of teams qualifying for
the state meet will remain the same with 12 in each classification.&nbsp;
Schools will be limited to only seven runners, one manager and two coaches at
the regional site on race day.&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/CrossCountry/Main.cfm">Click here for full details of the

Volleyball: All classes will be seeded into
geographical substates. The winner of each substate will play a&nbsp;
neighboring substate champion in a best of five match on the following Tuesday
to determine who goes to the state semifinals. The semifinals for each class
will travel to the state site for a one day tournament.

Soccer: Removed/suspended the seeding
criteria that states, "Teams must play 10 games or seeding percentage will
be halved" for the boys season. Teams for all classes will be seeded into
geographical pods instead of seeding east/west. Full details of the changes can

five individuals into regionals and state rather than six. The top three teams
in each regional will qualify for state instead of four. No changes to day two

virtual format if in person competition cannot be held.

Tennis: Modifications to the state tennis
tournament which include qualifying a reduced number of singles and doubles
participants.&nbsp;

played.&nbsp;2. Head-to Head if all teams tied played each other.&nbsp;3.
Marginal points – An average will be used vs a total because of the potential

draw).&nbsp;5. Voluntarily forfeiting a game eliminates a school from playoff

the season so the board felt it necessary to extend the season.

KSHSAA Executive Board and Board of Directors meeting, Sept. 15 and 16,
multiple adjustments have been made to the fall postseason for KSHSAA
activities.A brief synopsis by activity is

minutes to be posted at kshsaa.org next week.Cross Country: The number of teams qualifying for
the state meet will remain the same with 12 in each classification.&nbsp;
Schools will be limited to only seven runners, one manager and two coaches at

geographical substates. The winner of each substate will play a&nbsp;
neighboring substate champion in a best of five match on the following Tuesday
to determine who goes to the state semifinals. The semifinals for each class
will travel to the state site for a one day tournament.Soccer: Removed/suspended the seeding
