The COVID-19 pandemic has caused everyone to hit the pause button on life. During the stoppage and forced time away from routines, many people have come to appreciate the important things in life – family, friends and faith among others.&nbsp;

Still, the loss of some routines and regular activities hurt worse than others, namely last spring when high school sports and performing arts were shut down. Millions of students, coaches, parents and fans quickly began to realize the privilege of involvement in these education-based programs in schools.&nbsp;

Now, slowly but surely, high school sports and performing arts are on their way back into schools in Kansas and across the country. While things are different – with social distancing, universal masking protocols in place – there is a resounding feeling of thankfulness that some degree of normalcy is returning.

As a result, this year’s celebration of National High School Activities Month will be like none other in the 40-year history of the event. Since 1980, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and its member state associations have promoted the values of high school activity programs during the month of October, but this year will be extra special.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kicking off the month-long focus October 4-10 is National Sportsmanship, Fan Appreciation and Public-Address Announcers Week.

Hopefully, one of the silver linings of the pandemic is that parents and other fans are more grateful for any opportunity to attend contests this year and positively support student participants. At this time last year, there were numerous incidents of inappropriate adult behavior at high school events – mostly directed at officials.&nbsp;

This year, in addition to being respectful of officials, being a good fan involves supporting participants by social distancing and wearing a mask. Attending a high school contest is even more of a privilege, and players, coaches and officials need positive and encouraging support.

The week of October 11-17 is National Performing Arts Activities and Local State High School Associations Week.

More than four million high school students are involved in speech, debate, music, band and theatre activities each year. And the results of an aerosol study conducted by the NFHS and 125 other organizations show that if schools are in session, these activities can be safely conducted by implementing a mitigation strategy focused on Masks-Distance-Time-Air Flow-Hygiene.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Competing on the debate team or playing in the marching band or acting on stage as a part of the theatre team help students develop critical-thinking skills. They also learn to be better communicators and tend to be good listeners – qualities that are essential for success in life and in their chosen careers.

This week is also set aside to recognize the 51 NFHS member state associations, which have been working overtime for the past seven months with state government, health and education leaders to outline a safe return to activities.

The week of October 18-24 is National Coaches, Advisors, Officials and Sponsors Week.

High school coaches are playing an even larger role this year in connecting with their athletes – whether that connection is virtual or in-person. In some situations, a coach may be the most significant mentor in a student-athlete’s life, so keeping that relationship intact is paramount. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The nationwide shortage of officials has been exacerbated by the pandemic as some officials have decided not to return. To help with this critical situation, the NFHS is continuing its #BecomeAnOfficial campaign. finished second&nbsp; in their own tournament Monday at Smoky Hill County Club. 

The Monarchs shot a 411 which
was still 32 shots back of first-place Wamego. Plainville finished third with

🏐 HHS drops two at home

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State true freshman running back Deuce Vaughn was honored for a second-straight week as he was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week following his performance against Texas Tech, the conference office announced Monday.

It marks the third time in the last four years a Wildcat has earned consecutive weekly conference honors, and it is the first of the newcomer variety since&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;was honored after the Oklahoma State and Iowa State games in 2017.

Vaughn totaled 194 scrimmage yards against the Red Raiders, rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in three passes for 81 yards, which included a 70-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

A product of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn became the first Wildcat true freshman with a 100-yard rushing game since Logan Dold did so in 2008 against Texas A&amp;M. His 70-yard reception gave him back-to-back games with a reception of at least 70 yards, the first Wildcat to accomplish that feat in the regular season since Tyler Lockett in 2013 against Oklahoma and TCU.

Vaughn’s 194 scrimmage yards against Texas Tech are the most by any player in the nation this year, and he also holds the No. 2 spot with 174 yards (45 rushing, 129 receiving) at No. 3 Oklahoma.

Kansas State&nbsp;hits the road again as the Wildcats travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to face TCU on Saturday. The game will kick off at 3 p.m., inside Amon G. Carter Stadium and will be televised by FOX.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Athletics and head coach Chris Klieman have agreed to terms on a contract extension that runs through the 2026 football season, Athletics Director Gene Taylor announced today. Klieman, who led the Wildcats to eight wins and a bowl berth in his first season at K-State, is one of the winningest active head coaches in the country (82-19) and has continued to elevate the Wildcat program in just one-plus seasons at the helm. Under the terms of the new contract, Klieman will be paid an annual base salary of $3.1 million in 2021, $3.5 million in 2022, $4 million in 2023, $4.3 million in 2024, $4.3 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2026. The contract calls for several new incentives which includes retention bonuses in 2021 and 2022 and also additional years for winning eight or more regular season games in a season. “Chris and his staff have done a phenomenal job in their short time at K-State, and we are excited that he will be here for a very long time,” Taylor said. “We had been in discussions for an extended period of time, but certainly with sensitivity surrounding the COVID pandemic, we wanted to wait and finalize this contract once we were back to playing football and had some sense of certainty about the season. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Deuce Vaughn had a rushing touchdown and another receiving, Will Howard threw for 173 yards and a score and Kansas State held off Texas Tech for a 31-21 win Saturday.

Up 24-21 with two minutes left, Howard found Vaughn across the middle on third down for a 70-yard touchdown pass to seal the win.

Henry Colombi threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier White added 113 yards rushing and a score on 12 carries for Texas Tech, which lost its ninth game in 10 tries against the Wildcats.

Colombi had one big mistake despite an efficient performance, throwing into double coverage on a drive deep in Wildcat territory which was intercepted by Jahron McPherson late in the fourth quarter.

Both starting quarterbacks spent more time in the locker room than the field after suffering injuries in the first half.

Red Raiders QB Alan Bowman left the game after he took a hit to his right leg midway through the first quarter and didn’t return.

Halfway through the second quarter, Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson was hit and injured his right arm. He watched the second half from the sideline in a sling after going 5 of 10 for 33 yards and a passing touchdown.

Highly-touted freshman Will Howard, who took over for Thompson, completed 7 of 12 passes and looked poised in first game as a Wildcat.

Kansas State (2-1, 2-0 Big 12) blocked a punt for the third straight game and took advantage two plays later with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Thompson to Briley Moore which opened up the scoring.

It was Moore again in the fourth quarter who eluded two defenders for a 66-yard catch and the Wildcats scored on the next play on a 4-yard TD run by Harry Trotter to regain the lead 24-21.

Texas Tech (1-2, 0-2) kicker Trey Wolff missed 33- and 35-yard field-goal attempts in the first half.

Colombi looked capable of carrying the offense for Texas Tech, but they’ll welcome Bowman back as soon as he is ready.

Kansas State suffered many injuries, but still battled for their first 2-0 start in Big 12 play since 2014.

The Red Raiders travel to Iowa State next Saturday. Kansas State heads to TCU.

🏈 Kansas Falls to No.17 Oklahoma State

MILFORD, Kan. – The Hays High girls finished third and the
boys fifth at the Bob Schmoekel Cross Country Invitational at Milford Lake
Saturday morning.

The Indians girls were led by sophomore Amelia Jaeger who
finished ninth (21:18). Freshman Arely Maldonado placed 11th (21:26), freshman Brenlynn
Albers was 12th (21:31) and sophomore Jaycine Watson 15th (22:15).

Manhattan’s Jenna Keely won the girls’ race with a time of
19:20.

The boys were led by Leo Hernandez who finished 14th

KANSAS CITY (AP) —The NFL postponed this week's game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs&nbsp;after ''positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.'' ESPN reported on Saturday that Patriots&nbsp;quarterback Cam Newton&nbsp;was among those testing positive.

The NFL said on Saturday that the game, originally scheduled for 4:25 p.m. EDT on Sunday, will be played on Monday or Tuesday, a move that would be possible only if there is no wider spread of the disease on the rosters.

The Patriots confirmed that a player has tested positive but did not reveal his name. Newton's agent did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking confirmation.

The only known Chiefs player to test positive is quarterback Jordan Ta'amu, a member of the practice squad who has not appeared in a game but would have spent time in meetings with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and the team's other QBs.

It is the second game this weekend that has been affected by COVID-19. After an outbreak on the Titans, the matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee was postponed - originally for a day or two, and then until Oct. 25 as the positive tests accumulated.

To fit it in, the Steelers' game against Baltimore that day was pushed back to Nov. 1.

The Patriots had been planning to fly to Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. Instead, players left the facility to await further instructions. The team said in a statement that the COVID-positive player has entered self-quarantine and that players, coaches and staff who were in close contact with him were tested Saturday morning and all were negative.

Earlier this week, Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty&nbsp;said the league might have grown overconfident after making it through training camps and the first two weeks of the season without a major outbreak.

''But at the end of the day, we are in a pandemic,'' he said. ''So what happened in Tennessee, although it kind of shocks us, it's not really surprising. I think we all knew at some point we might get some positive tests.

''So it's like, 'We got this,''' he said. ''I think this is just a little shocker, but it's also a wakeup call, like 'Hey, the virus is still here and it will affect any and everybody. It doesn't care that we're trying to play football.'''

ELLIS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs ran their win streak to four-games
in-a-row Friday night as they defeated the Ellis Railroaders 28-21, in the
Battle of Big Creek, thanks to and interception return for a touchdown with
three second left by Jace Wentling.

Friday night at Ellis marked the third straight game TMP had
returned an interception for a touchdown by the 85-yard return by Wentling was
the biggest yet.

The game was a tight back and forth battle as expected in
the battle of the Ellis County rivals.

The Monarchs opened the game with an eight-play drive that
ended with a missed field goal.

On their first offense possession of the game the Railroaders
wasted no time covering 80-yards in just five players capped off by a six-yard
touchdown run by Konnor Pfeifer that give Ellis and early 6-0. Mason Gottschalk
had a run of 72 yards that set up the touchdown run.

TMP answered that long touchdown drive with an eight-play 54-yard
drive that was capped off by a 36-yard touchdown pass from Kade Harris to Jace
Wentling on 4-and-17 tying the game at six with 3:22 to play in the first
quarter.

Both teams failed to convert on points after touchdown
tries.

Neither team was able to find the endzone for the rest of
the first quarter and for a large portion of the second quarter but Ellis broke
the tie with a six-yard touchdown run with just under three minutes to play in
the first half as Ellis took the 12-6 lead.

TMP had their chances at the end of the first half but had
three straight turnovers later in that first half.

The Monarchs were able to retake the lead late in the third
quarter when Harris scored from eight yards out tying the game at 12 and with
the extra point TMP took at 13-12 lead with a little more than two minutes left
in the quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter Ellis took the lead on a
31-yard Tegan Cain field goal giving the Railroaders the 15-13 lead.

Almost three minutes later TMP answered with a scoring drive
of their own as Lance Lang scored his first touchdown of the season on the ground
from eight-yards out giving the Monarchs the 21-15 lead. 

Ellis though had an answer as Pfeifer scored his second
rushing touchdown of the game, this one from 53-yards that capped off a 71 yard
drive that tied that game at 21. They had a chance to take the lead with the
extra-point but an errant snap cost Ellis a chance.

With 1:32 to play, Ellis took over and began to work their
way down the field and drove all the way to the TMP 20 yard line with just 18
seconds to play.

On a first down play Ellis quarterback Tegan Cain was
intercepted by TMP’s Wentling and he was able to run it back for the 85-yard
touchdown with just three second left. He added the extra point as TMP claimed
the 28-21 win.

For just the second time since 1989 the TMP-Marian Monarchs have
won four straight games and are 4-1 to start the season.

TMP improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in district play.

TMP will travel to Southwestern Heights Friday night while
Ellis is Syracuse.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — It was sloppy and downright ugly at times. It was a victory, though, and Vic Fangio and the Denver Broncos are relieved to finally get one — no matter how it looked.

Melvin Gordon sealed the Denver Broncos’ first win of the season with a 43-yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining, and the defense made just enough plays in the fourth quarter to beat the bumbling — and still winless — New York Jets 37-28 on Thursday night.

“Winning has cured more ills than penicillin,” said Fangio, who was feeling the heat along with his team while facing the prospect of a second straight 0-4 start.

But the Broncos (1-3) came out on top in a penalty-filled but strangely entertaining game between two of the NFL’s worst teams.

“It just makes you hungry for the next win,” said Bradley Chubb, who had 2 1/2 of Denver’s six sacks.

And this one swung with a late mistake by New York’s defense, which was plagued by bad plays all night.

On third-and-6 and the Jets leading by one in the fourth quarter, Quinnen Williams sacked Brett Rypien — but grabbed the quarterback’s helmet and prolonged the drive. Seven plays later, Brandon McManus kicked a 53-yard field goal to give Denver a 30-28 lead with 3:08 remaining.

The Jets couldn’t do anything on their next possession, and Sam Darnold was sacked by Chubb on fourth-and-3 at the two-minute warning. Gordon ended New York’s chances with his long rumble that sent the Jets to consecutive 0-4 starts for the first time in franchise history.

The heat on coach Adam Gase’s seat will surely be turned up after this latest embarrassment, but no coaching change is imminent. New York was penalized 11 times, including six personal fouls.

“We had multiple chances to get off the field,” Gase said. “We beat ourselves. The penalties are just ... they’re brutal.”

Fangio directed some of his players to head to the locker room as the game ended, and the coach didn’t meet with Gase for the customary postgame handshake.

“There was just a couple of personal fouls there at the end and our sideline was getting (ticked) off about it,” Fangio said. “I just wanted to avoid any confrontation at the end of the game and having it get ugly there.”

The Jets were actually in position to win after Pierre Desir, having a rough game in coverage, redeemed himself a bit by picking off Rypien — whose arm was hit by Tarell Basham as he threw — and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown. Darnold’s pass into the end zone on the 2-point try was incomplete, leaving the Jets trailing 27-25 with 10:45 remaining.

Brian Poole intercepted Rypien, making his first NFL start, on the Broncos’ next possession, giving the Jets the ball at Denver’s 44. That led to Sam Ficken’s fifth field goal, a 36-yarder that put New York ahead 28-27 with 6:28 remaining.

“It’s definitely frustrating to come out here and lose another one,” said Jamison Crowder, who had seven catches for 104 yards in his return after missing two games with a hamstring injury.

Rypien, the nephew of 1992 Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien, became the first quarterback to win his first start with three interceptions since San Francisco’s Jim Druckenmiller beat the St. Louis Rams 15-12 in 1997. Rypien finished 19 for 31 for 242 yards and two TDs, along with the three picks.

Rypien put the Broncos on top 10-7 in the second quarter with a 48-yard throw to Jerry Jeudy. The rookie wide receiver reached in front of Desir, snatched the football and then walked into the end zone for his first NFL TD. That drive was kept alive by another defensive penalty when Williams was called for roughing the passer.

“Well, it was up and down,” Fangio said of Rypien’s night, declining to commit to him starting the next game. “I thought there was some good things. We hit some big plays, which is always important. Throwing three interceptions, you’re not going to win many times in this league. But we found a way to win tonight in spite of that.”

Darnold gave the Jets their first lead of the season&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/videos/can-t-miss-play-darnold-has-career-best-46-yard-scramble-td" target="_blank">with a dazzling run</a>. He wriggled out of a sack attempt by Alexander Johnson, took off up the middle, sidestepped Justin Simmons’ tackle try and charged downfield. Kareem Jackson looked as if he thought Darnold was going to slide — but the quarterback stayed on his feet, faked Jackson and avoided another diving tackle attempt for a 46-yard touchdown that put New York up 7-0.

Darnold, whose run was the longest by a quarterback this season, flipped the ball over his shoulder and his teammates mobbed him.

Late in the first quarter, Darnold tried to avoid the rush and was slammed to the ground onto his right shoulder by Johnson, who didn’t let the quarterback get past him this time. Darnold handed off on the next play, then headed to the sideline and into the locker room — as the Jets and their fans watching on TV at home held their breath.

Joe Flacco, in his first game as New York’s backup, took over. Darnold came back early in the second quarter on the Jets’ next series — and was promptly sacked again.

He finished 23 of 42 for 230 yards, and had 84 yards rushing.

“We’ll take it day by day,” Darnold said of his shoulder. “We’ll know more tomorrow.”

Gordon, who had a 1-yard touchdown plunge late in the opening half to give Denver a 17-10 lead, finished with 107 yards on 23 carries. ... Tim Patrick had six catches for 113 yards, including a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/videos/just-rypien-it-qb-caps-stellar-drive-with-td-dart-to-tim-patrick" target="_blank">6-yard touchdown that</a>&nbsp;put Denver up 24-16 in the third quarter.

Broncos: WR KJ Hamler left with a hamstring injury. TE Noah Fant was carted off with an ankle injury in the third quarter.

Jets: LT Chuma Edoga left in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. He started for Mekhi Becton, who was questionable with a shoulder injury. Becton replaced Edoga, but also had to leave and was replaced by Conor McDermott. CB Bless Austin (calf) and WR Lawrence Cager (hamstring) also left with injuries.

Broncos: hit the road again to take on Cam Newton and the New England Patriots on Oct. 11.

Jets: look for their first win when they host Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 11.

HUTCHINSON –
For only the second time this fall the Hays High girls’ golf team didn’t win
the tournament they were playing in, and for only the second team they finished
lower than second place.

The Indians
finished fifth at Thursday’s 12-team Hutchinson Invitational at Carey Park. HHS
shot a 369 which was 14 shots behind first-place Buhler (355) and eight back of
second-place Winfield (361).

The Indians had
two golfers finish in the top-20 medalists. Taleia McCrae shot an 11-over-par

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The MIAA CEO Council met on Wednesday, September 30 to discuss a number of items in regard to fall sports to be conducted in the spring of 2021 and the start of the 2020-2021 winter sports season.

The MIAA will not develop a formal football schedule or conduct a cross country championship this academic year, and it will not crown a champion in either sport. MIAA football programs will be permitted to set up no more than four joint practices, scrimmages, or games with outside competition or other MIAA members this spring as each member institution deems appropriate for its program. As a result of this action, a few MIAA schools have decided to pursue limited independent schedules in both sports this fall. These independent events are non-conference contests as permitted per NCAA regulations.

The CEO Council was also updated on the Association’s Athletics Administrators Committee (AAC) review of possible formal 2021 spring seasons for volleyball and women’s soccer. At the current time, and based on current health and testing conditions, it is the intent of the MIAA to offer sport seasons this spring for MIAA schools to compete against each other, and possibly non-conference opponents, in the sports of volleyball and women’s soccer.&nbsp; Issues concerning the season structure, team schedules, conference awards and statistics, spring tournaments, and other sport issues will continue to be discussed by each sport’s MIAA Monitoring Group.

With regards to the men’s and women’s basketball season, the group had discussions about the recently released&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/sport-science-institute/core-principles-resocialization-collegiate-basketball">NCAA Sports Science Institute’s Core Principles of Resocialization of Collegiate Basketball.</a>&nbsp;The CEO Council noted concerns about the document’s new testing recommendations and travel considerations for men’s and women’s basketball and it agreed to continue to monitor NCAA, CDC, and local government guidance on testing protocols and resources. At the present time, MIAA schools are planning to begin the college basketball season as scheduled on October 15 with games scheduled to tip-off on November 18 and 19.&nbsp;

The sports of men’s and women’s indoor track and field and wrestling were also discussed and the CEO Council agreed to provide institutional discretion with the start of each sport. The group noted that with no formal MIAA indoor track and field and wrestling schedules, each institution can determine the start date for those sports.

TOPEKA – The Kansas State High School Activities Association
has released Sub-State Volleyball assignments for 2020 on Thursday.

Due to COVID-19, there will be some changes for the 2020
season.
