KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;As part of its new winter sports protocols, the MIAA announced that it will launch a new health monitoring and education tool through the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.uscah.com/">U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health (USCAH)</a>. The tool will allow MIAA student-athletes and coaches to conduct daily health screenings and to receive important educational materials and resources regarding COVID-19 infection control mitigation. According to USCAH, this MIAA new health tool called the “Mitigation Information and Assessment App”, makes the MIAA the first collegiate organization (in any division) to take a uniform, conference-wide approach to monitor student-athlete health and to deliver important, timely educational resources on a daily basis. “To be the first to commit to a conference-wide approach, focusing on the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and gameday personnel in regard to COVID-19 is an important milestone for our Association,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy.&nbsp;“Our campus administrators and health officials made it known that we want to return to competition, but we are committed to doing that in a way that keeps us in alignment with our core values and mission. 🏐 Area teams remain ranked in KVA poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Le’Veon Bell once carried the ball a league-leading 321 times in a single season for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He doesn’t figure to get nearly as many chances with the Kansas City Chiefs.

That’s just fine with the two-time All-Pro running back, though. Bell has been the focal point of defenses for the majority of his career, whether that was in Pittsburgh or during his short stint with the New York Jets. But now Bell’s on a team with so much offensive firepower that he could only marvel while watching them beat the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

“I was just like, ‘This is unbelievable,’” said Bell, who had to return a week’s worth of negative COVID-19 tests before joining his new team. He took the practice field for the first time Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s game in Denver.

“I was watching kind of like, ‘As a defense, they’re so tough to stop,’” Bell continued. “There’s so many weapons. You have to pick your poison. You have the guys coaching, the offensive line, the quarterback — they’re all making the right decision and all on the same page. It’s a tough offense to stop. I’m just going to come in and fit in where I can.”

That might not have been the attitude the 28-year-old Bell had earlier in his career.

After making a trio of Pro Bowl trips and becoming a star with the Steelers, he earned a me-first reputation when he sat out an entire season in a contract dispute. And it didn’t go away when he took to social media and liked a series of tweets from fans and pundits that questioned his usage — or lack thereof — in Jets coach Adam Gase’s offensive system.

When the Jets eventually released him, Bell said he quickly narrowed his options to three teams. But one stood out above the rest, and not just because his offseason training partner, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, was constantly in his ear.

Bell knew that no matter how involved he would be in the Chiefs offense, he would have a chance to win a championship.

“I mean, obviously when I decided to come here I knew the weapons. There’s only one football to go around,” said Bell, who will share the bulk of the running load with Clyde Edwards-Helaire. “The times when I do get my opportunities, I think there is going to be a chance to show what I can do.”

Bell’s patient running style is a good fit for a rejuvenated offensive line, and his ability to catch passes out of the backfield is an important element of coach Andy Reid’s system. And while Bell knows the first read will often be to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce or another pass-catcher, there will still be chances to get his hands on the ball in the passing game.

“He’s a mismatch coming out of the backfield, the way he’s able to run routes, split out and be another receiver out there. It’s special,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “He’s going to have a lot of matchups with linebackers on him and I’m sure he’s pretty excited about that.”

Exactly how involved Bell will be in the short term will depend on his ability to quickly pick up the playbook.

Reid long has had a reputation for a robust menu of plays, and learning them all with a full offseason and training camp is difficult enough. But Bell will have to do it on the fly, picking up just enough to make him available on Sunday, then adding to his knowledge each week through the remainder of the season.

“I think we’ll take it day by day and just see how he does and what he’s comfortable with,” Reid said. “One thing you try not to forget is how much volume you have at this point in the year. Really you just have to have good communication between us, the coaches, and the player, and see exactly where he’s at. He’ll get in there and practice and we’ll see where it goes.”

🏈 Tigers to hold scrimmage on October 31

HAYS – For the first time since early March, the Fort Hays State
football team returned to the practice field Tuesday afternoon. 

The Tigers were barely into their spring practice schedule when
it was halted by the COVID-19 shutdown. After the season was canceled late this summer, the team has had an off-season approach with weights and conditioning along with position
group practice but Tuesday marked the first time the entire team was on the field
together.

“It is one of the best feelings” said FHSU head coach Chris
Brown. “It’s still kind of hard with all of the protocols you have to follow
with the social distancing, the masks and all of those things making sure our
kids stay healthy.”

“Great feeling being back out here. It was fun, it was
enjoyable.” Brown added. “One of the best parts of my day is being out here on
the field with these kids and seeing them compete and get after it.”

Brown says they plan to hold a couple of intra-squad
scrimmages which will be open to fans before concluding their fall workouts
before Thanksgiving.

SALINA – The Hays High girls’ golf team improved their team
score by seven strokes Tuesday and finished in fourth place at the 5A State
Golf Championships at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. 

The Indians shot a 354
in Monday’s first round then closed with a 347 on Tuesday for a 701 total which was five
strokes behind third place St. Thomas Aquinas.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the team title with a 665, seven shots better than Mill Valley who finished second.

Senior Sierra Smith had the best improvement from day one to day two. After shooting a 104 on Monday, she bounced back with a 91 in her second round Tuesday which was the difference in Hays passing Andover on the team leaderboard.

The Indians had two medalists led by Taleia McCrae who finished in 18th
place. The junior closed with an 85 after shooting an 81 in Monday’s first
round.&nbsp;

Indian sophomore Katie Dinkel placed 19th, three strokes
behind McCrae. After shooting an 86 on Monday, Dinkel closed with an 83 in the
final round which included a 37 on the front nine.

Senior Sophia Garrison shot an 88 in the final round and
tied for 24th.

Mill Valley’s Libby Green won the individual title. She
closed with a 4-over-par 74 and finished the two-day event at 3-over-par.

final round on Tuesday and finished at 14-over-par at the two-day event.

Plainville sophomore Corbyn Marquess, who was four shots
back of Starbuck after day one, shot an 84 in the final round and placed
second, seven shots off the pace.

Colby’s Brinley Sims finished in eighth place with a 185
while teammate Mya Betz tied for 18th.

Division II Management Council adjusts basketball championship selection criteria

Division II winter sport student-athletes who compete during the 2020-21 academic year will receive an additional season of competition through a waiver the Division II Management Council approved this week. In addition, student-athletes eligible for this waiver also will receive an extension of eligibility, according to a waiver previously approved by the Division II Administrative Committee.

The same flexibility was provided to spring sport athletes after their 2020 seasons were canceled and to fall student-athletes after the Division II Championships were canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/dii-grants-all-fall-athletes-further-season-competition-relief?division=d2">Administrative Committee approved a pair of waivers</a>&nbsp;permitting all student-athletes who competed during the 2020-21 academic year an additional year of eligibility and season-of-competition opportunities if their team completed 50% or less of their sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition. That flexibility still applies for spring sport student-athletes in the 2021 season.

The Division II Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement recommended the most recent waiver for winter sport athletes due to the likelihood that their seasons will be impacted by COVID-19 in ways similar to fall sports.

“Winter student-athletes lost out on their championship opportunity last season and many will have shortened, conference-only seasons this year,” said Chris Graham, commissioner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and chair of the Division II Management Council. “We believe providing the maximum season-of-competition waiver flexibility is the right thing to do for winter student-athletes who continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Related to the waiver for winter sport athletes, financial aid flexibility was proactively provided by the Administrative Committee during its Sept. 2 meeting. For the 2021-22 academic year, schools may exempt athletics aid given to all student-athletes who would have exhausted their eligibility during this academic year. This relief applies only to student-athletes who remain at their current schools. Transfers who would have exhausted their eligibility this academic year and receive athletics aid in 2021-22 will count toward team equivalency limits.

The Management Council reduced the minimum number of contests required for championships selection for men’s and women’s basketball from 15 games to 11 for the 2020-21 academic year.

The Division II Championships Committee recommended the reduction due to concerns about health and safety, flexibility and consistency.

The majority of Division II conferences will not begin athletics activities until after Jan. 1, resulting in a compressed regular-season schedule for basketball. The change to 11 games for basketball also aligns with the 50% reduction to other sports’ minimum required contest numbers for championships selection.

Additionally, the Management Council approved a proposal to change the dates of the 2021 Division II men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships from March 10-13 to March 17-20 in Birmingham, Alabama. To account for the date change, the council extended the playing and practice seasons for men’s and women’s swimming and diving from 144 days to 151. Their championships were originally scheduled to be part of the 2021 Division II National Championships Festival, along with the Division II wrestling and indoor track and field championships, but the 2021 festival was canceled due to health and safety concerns. The track and field and swimming and diving championships will remain at the CrossPlex, as originally scheduled. However, to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes, one of the championships needed to change dates. The wrestling championships will still take place on their originally scheduled date of March 12-13 at a location to be determined.

The Management Council advanced three proposals related to the Division II infractions process for the Presidents Council to sponsor for the 2022 NCAA Convention. The Presidents Council meets Oct. 28.

The proposals include enhancement tools like noncooperation penalties and importation of facts. Importation would allow the enforcement staff or Committee on Infractions to bring in information from outside proceedings, such as court cases. The council also advanced a proposal that would establish a negotiated resolution process similar to that of Division I’s.

The three proposals were put forward by the Division II Enforcement and Infractions Task Force, which was created to study the recent changes made to the Division I infractions process and recommend ways to enhance Division II’s process. The task force is expected to complete its work in summer 2021.

The ends of each row on the home side of the stadium will be tied off, and, if necessary, the visitor's side will as well.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Clyde Edwards-Helaire showed new teammate Le’Veon Bell and the rest of the NFL how dominant the Kansas City Chiefs’ running attack is already.

The rookie had 161 yards rushing and Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Travis Kelce, leading the Chiefs to a 26-17 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night in a game that was originally scheduled for last Thursday.

Mahomes finished 21 of 26 for 225 yards. His first scoring toss to Kelce was the 90th of his career in his 37th game, breaking the NFL record for fewest games to 90 TD passes. Hall of Famer Dan Marino had the previous mark at 40 games.

Darrel Williams scored on 13-yard run to cap a nearly eight-minute, 82-yard drive that gave the Chiefs a 20-10 lead with 1:18 left in the third quarter, effectively sealing the game.

The Chiefs are off to a their third 5-1 start in four seasons, and they bounced back from a sloppy 40-32 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 11.

Last week, Kansas City added another weapon to its high-powered offense by signing Bell a few days after he was cut by the New York Jets. Bell is expected to make his debut this weekend at Denver.

The Chiefs, who were originally scheduled to play three games in 11 days, wound up having two extra days of rest on Buffalo.

Josh Allen finished 14 of 27 for 122 yards with touchdown passes to Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley.

In what was supposed to be a showdown of the NFL’s top passers, the Chiefs leaned on their running game to help keep the Allen-led Bills cooling their heels on the sideline.

The Chiefs dominated time of possession by more than 15 minutes, rushing 46 times — the most in eight seasons under coach Andy Reid — for 245 yards. It was the first time Kansas City topped 200 yards rushing since Mahmoes took over the starting job.

Buffalo’s run defense had its worst outing since giving up 273 yards in a loss to New England on Dec. 23, 2018.

The Chiefs, up 23-17, avoided a major scare when Buffalo’s Justin Zimmer stripped the ball from Edwards-Helaire at the Kansas City 30. The play was ruled a fumble on the field, but that call was overturned after replays showed Edwards-Helaire’s knee was down.

Two plays later, on third-and-11, Mahomes scrambled out of trouble and hit Byron Pringle for 37 yards.

The drive finished with Harrison Butker hitting a 30-yard field goal with 1:56 left.

As they’ve done all season, the Bills elected to stay in their locker room for the performance of the national anthem. The Chiefs were along their sideline, with defensive end Alex Okafor the only player spotted kneeling.

The Bills continued to play in an empty stadium because of state COVID-19 regulations.

Chiefs: T Mitchell Schwartz, who started his 134th consecutive game, did not return after the first series because of a back injury. He has the longest active streak among offensive linemen and third longest among offensive players. Okafor was ruled out after hurting his hamstring in the second quarter.

Bills: CB Cam Lewis did not return after hurting his wrist in the first half. Starting left guard Cody Ford was carted off the sideline after hurting his right knee in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs: WR Sammy Watkins did not play after hurting his hamstring last week.

Bills: Buffalo’s defensive struggles led to a line shakeup with DE Trent Murphy and DT Harrison Phillips inactive. They were replaced by Bryan Cox and Justin Zimmer, who were elevated from the practice squad earlier in the day.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas’ Pooka Williams Jr., was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the Big 12 Conference announced on Monday. The honor is his fifth-career weekly Big 12 recognition and the first of the special teams variety.

In the fourth quarter of Saturday’s contest at West Virginia, Williams received the West Virginia kickoff at the 8-yard line and out-ran defenders for a 92-yard touchdown. The kickoff return touchdown was the first for Kansas since 2016 when Laquvionte Gonzalez returned a kickoff 99 yards against Ohio.

The kickoff return touchdown was the first of Williams’ career and his 17th&nbsp;touchdown overall. This season, Williams has returned seven kicks for 197 yards while his career numbers include 18 kickoff returns for 443 yards.

The honor is the first for a member of KU special teams since October 28, 2019, when Liam Jones was named Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking the game-winning field goal against Texas Tech. It is Kansas’ first weekly Big 12 honor this season.

The Big 12 Conference announced West Virginia’s Leddie Brown as the Offensive Player of the Week, Josh Chandler-Semedo as Defensive Player of the Week and Akheem Mesidor as Newcomer of the Week.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Denver kicker Brandon McManus had six field goals and linebacker Malik Reed came up with a big sack late to help the Broncos hold on for an 18-12 win over the New England Patriots Sunday in a game twice delayed following positive coronavirus tests for both teams.

Sunday’s game was originally scheduled for last week but got postponed twice, first by a day, then by seven. The delay was caused after multiple Patriots players tested positive for COVID-19, including quarterback Cam Newton and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore.

New England (2-3) rallied from an 18-3 deficit and nearly pulled off the comeback, but had three turnovers.

Drew Lock finished 10 of 24 for 189 yards in his first start since injuring his shoulder in Denver’s Week 2 loss to Pittsburgh. He was steady early, but had back-to-back interceptions in the fourth quarter to let the Patriots back into the game.

Denver’s defense entered the game with two takeaways on the season. It forced three on Sunday, coming up with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

It underscored a rough day for New England, which was held to 288 yards.

It was the first game back for Newton, who returned after missing New England’s Week 4 loss at Kansas City. He finished 17 of 25 for 157 yards. He also rushed 10 times for 76 yards and touchdown.

The Broncos’ win snapped a four-game losing streak in New England.

Denver (2-3) won despite being without leading rusher Melvin Gordon and top pass catcher Noah Fant, who was out with an ankle injury. Phillip Lindsay started in Gordon’s place and rushed 23 times for 101 yards. Tim Patrick had four catches for 101 yards.

McManus, who connected on field goals of 52 and 54 yards, now has six games with multiple 50-yard field goals. That is tied with Baltimore’s Justin Tucker for the most in NFL history.

After taking a 15-3 lead early in the third quarter, the Broncos defense came up with a second turnover when Ryan Izzo caught a pass over the middle but was stripped by cornerback Michael Ojemudia. Justin Simmons recovered the fumble, giving the ball to Denver on the New England 42.

McManus connected on his 54-yarder field goal four plays later to stretch Denver’s lead.

The Knights, ranked seventh in this week’s KVA poll, went
3-0 in pool play, defeating Central Plains 25-20, 25-16, Kinsley 25-11, 25-13
and Otis-Bison 25-17, 25-15.

They lost to St. John in the semifinals in three sets before
coming back to defeat Central Plains in three sets in the third place match
21-25, 25-19, 25-21.

On Friday she defeated Molly Bender of Conway Springs 6-0, 6-2 then knocked off
Olivia Favero of St Mary’s Colgan 6-4, 6-4.
