BUHLER - Big
nights from Brock Lummus and Carson Jacobs helped the Hays Senior Eagles 19U baseball team to a 10-6 and 8-4 win over the Buhler Nationals at Wheatland Park Wednesday night. 

Jacobs hit a two-run homer off the left field scoreboard to highlight a four-run first inning in the Eagles 10-6 win in game one. Jacobs also singled and drove in three. Lummus had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Remington Cox also had two RBIs while Brady Kreutzer added three hits.

Kreutzer (1-0) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of relief and picke dup the win.had three
hits and picked up the win in relief. After giving up a two-run homer to the first batter he faced, Kreutzer struck out the next three and finished with four strikeouts.

FHSU women’s soccer faces MIAA opponents exclusively in 2020

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;K-State Athletics will honor a group of 11 outstanding individuals with induction into its Athletics Hall of Fame in September, school officials announced today.

The 2020 Hall of Fame class includes three football greats in&nbsp;David Allen,&nbsp;Jordy Nelson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Darren Sproles,&nbsp;Laurie Koehn&nbsp;(women’s basketball),&nbsp;Liz Wegner&nbsp;(volleyball),&nbsp;A.J. Morris&nbsp;(baseball),&nbsp;Mike Wreblewski&nbsp;(men’s basketball),&nbsp;Attila Zsiovczky&nbsp;(track and field) and&nbsp;Marty, John and Mary Vanier&nbsp;(contributors).

“This year’s group of 11 individuals is a star-studded class, and we are excited to welcome them into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame,” said&nbsp;Kenny Lannou, Executive Associate Athletics Director for Communications and K-State Athletics Hall of Fame Chairperson. “Each of these inductees has made a lasting impact on K-State Athletics and Kansas State University, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Manhattan this fall for a special induction weekend.”

The class is the 13th in the history of the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame, including the charter class of 1990, and will be honored during the weekend of September 5. Official induction ceremonies will take place on Friday, September 4, before the inductees are recognized at halftime of the football game against Buffalo the following day.

More ceremony details will be announced later this summer.

K-State Athletics Hall of Fame – Class of 2020 Biographies

David Allen starred for K-State football from 1997 through 2000 as a running back and return specialist. Despite an injury-shortened senior season, Allen left K-State as the all-time leader in career punt return average, yards, attempts, and touchdowns, with his seven career punt return touchdowns tying a NCAA record. A three-time All-Big 12 honoree, Allen burst into the national spotlight as a sophomore in 1998, becoming the first and only player to return a punt for a touchdown in three consecutive weeks while setting an NCAA record with four punt returns for touchdowns in a season, earning Consensus First Team All-American honors. In 1999 as a junior, Allen earned First team All-American honors again and was named one of five finalists for the Mosi Tatupu National Special Teams Player of the Year Award. Allen earned the starting running back spot as a senior in 2000, but an injury in the first game of the season ended his career at K-State. Allen went on to play six years of professional football, including five years in the NFL. In 2008, Allen was placed in the Ring of Honor at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and in 2018 was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Laurie Koehn was one of the greatest sharpshooters in women’s NCAA history while at K-State from 2002-05. She is the all-time leader in 3-point field goals made in Big 12 history with 392 (also a NCAA record until 2020) and in attempts at 942 while also holding the Big 12 record for career free-throw percentage at 87.7. Named the ESPN.com Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Koehn helped the Wildcats explode onto the national spotlight with a 26-8 season and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2002. The Cats followed up that season with a school-record 29-5 campaign in 2003 before claiming the program’s first-ever Big 12 Championship in 2004. Koehn was named All-Big 12 three times during her career and was a two-time Academic All-American. Koehn ranks fifth in school history in career points with 1,733 and remains littered in the record book for 3-pointers. Koehn signed a free agent contract with the Washington Mystics for the 2005 season and went on to enjoy an eight-year professional basketball career both in the WNBA and overseas. Among Koehn’s career international playing highlights was a gold medal as a member of Team USA’s U18 team in July of 2000 at the FIBA Americas Championship and a silver medal as a member of Team USA again in 2003 at the Pan American Games. Koehn was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

A.J. Morris led the Wildcats as a junior to their first-ever NCAA Regional appearance. Morris ended the season with a school-record 14 wins a 2.09 ERA, earning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Midwest Region honors, District Player of the Year, and NCAA Houston All-Regional team honors. Morris was a finalist for two national awards, the College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year Award, and the Golden Spikes Award, given to college baseball’s annual top player. He also became the second Wildcat and first pitcher to ever be named Consensus First Team All-American. Morris set four single-season records including wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts, and saved his best games for the best opponents, going 7-0 with a 1.93 ERA against ranked teams. Morris was a fourth round draft choice by the Washington Nationals in 2009 and played seven seasons in professional baseball, making his MLB debut in 2016 with the Cincinnati Reds and playing with Team Italy at the World Baseball Classic in 2017.

A walk-on safety from Riley, Kansas as a freshman in 2003, Jordy Nelson eventually switched to wide receiver and blossomed into one of the greatest at that position in program history. As a senior in 2007, Nelson totaled 122 catches for 1,606 yards, both school records that stand today. Named as one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top college wide receiver, Nelson also was named All-Big 12 as a receiver and as a returner, and became the 10th Wildcat to ever be named a Consensus First Team All-American. His 206 career receptions and 2,822 career yards receiving still rank third all-time, while he also finished his career with six punt returns for touchdowns. A second round draft choice by the Green Bay Packers in 2008, Nelson reached stardom with the Packers and in the NFL, winning Super Bowl XLV in 2011, setting the Packers’ single season receiving record in 2014 and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. Nelson also earned the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award in 2016 after missing the 2015 season with an injury and leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns. Nelson retired from the NFL in 2019 after 11 seasons with over 600 receptions, nearly 8,600 yards, and eight Green Bay franchise records. Nelson was placed into K-State football’s Ring of Honor in 2015 and is set to be inducted into Wisconsin’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

Arguably the greatest running back ever to play at K-State, Sproles became a three-time All-American while with the Wildcats. In 2003, Sproles was tabbed First Team All-American, finished fifth in the Heisman voting, and third in the voting for Associated Press Player of the Year, all while helping the Wildcats upset No. 1 Oklahoma en route to their first Big 12 title. Sproles still holds numerous school records, including rushing yardage in a single season with 1,986 yards and in a career with 4,979 yards. A gifted returner, Sproles also still holds all-purpose yardage school records for a single season and in a career. A fourth round pick by San Diego in 2005, Sproles became an instant fan favorite, eventually setting the Chargers franchise record for career kickoff return yards. A few years later in 2011 with the Saints, Sproles set the franchise and NFL single season record for all-purpose yardage at 2,696 yards. Sproles earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2015 after leading the NFL in yards per punt return while with the Eagles and went on to earn three Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors in his 15-year NFL career. Sproles retired in 2019 ranking fifth on the NFL’s career all-purpose yardage list with 19,696 yards. A Super Bowl winner with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and a member of the San Diego Chargers 50th Anniversary Team, Sproles was also named to the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 2010 era and placed in K-State football’s Ring of Honor in 2015.

The children of K-State legacy family Jack and Donna Vanier, Marty, John, and Mary Vanier have continued the tradition of tremendous support of Kansas State University and K-State Athletics. In addition to their many University, civic, and local honors, awards, and gifts, Marty, John and Mary Vanier have contributed or been part of many critical K-State Athletics projects benefiting Wildcat student-athletes and fans from multiple sports, including but not limited to the K-State Golf Course Foundation at Colbert Hills, the Baseball-Soccer Campaign, the Ice Family Basketball Center, the Football Stadium Capital Improvements for the West Stadium Center, the Vanier Family Football Complex, and the current South End Zone/Building Champions Capital Initiative. Notably, all three were part of the 2005 Vanier family gift to K-State Athletics, then in 2014, the Vanier family gave a transformational gift of $60 million to Kansas State University benefiting many areas across campus, with a portion earmarked for K-State Athletics and specifically the Vanier Family Football Complex. Heavily involved in the support of multiple organizations across K-State’s main and satellite campuses, Marty, John, and Mary Vanier will join their parents, Jack and Donna Vanier, who were inducted in 1995 into the K-State Athletic Hall of Fame.

The first two-time All-American in K-State volleyball history, Liz Wegner-Busch helped the Wildcats to one of their most success four year stretches in school history from 1998-2001. Winning 80 matches over four years and making four NCAA Tournaments, Wegner also set the school record for career kills with 1,907, kills per set at 4.48, 20-kill matches with 27, total attacks at nearly 4,900, and total points at 2,161, over 280 more than the next student athlete. She is one of only three Wildcats to post 30 or more kills two or more times in match, including her career high of 35 against Baylor in 1999, which ranks third in school history. Wegner was also the first K-State attacker to post back-to-back seasons of 500 kills or more in school history. Not just an offensive force, Wegner posted over 1,000 digs in her career to be one of only five players ever with over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Her 44 career double-doubles rank fifth all-time, including three matches of over 20 kills and 20 digs, fourth most in K-State history. A three-time All-Big 12 selection, Wegner became the first Wildcat in school history to be named to an NCAA All-Tournament team when she earned the distinction in 2000 for the Mideast Region. Wegner was also a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and earned Second Team Academic All-District honors as a senior.

A First Team All-American and school record holder, Mike Wroblewski played for Tex Winter and K-State men’s basketball from 1959-1962. As a senior in 1962, Wroblewski led the Wildcats averaging 19 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for a team that went 22-3 and finished No. 6 in the Associated Press Top 25. His 46 points against rival KU on February 7, 1962 still ranks as the most points in a conference game for K-State, as does his field goals made and attempted from that game. For his efforts, Wroblewski was named a Second Team All-American and First Team All-Big 8 performer. Over his last three years, Wroblewski helped the Wildcats to a 60-18 record, won two Big 8 championships, and appeared in the 1961 Midwest Regional Final (Elite Eight). In 1962, Wroblewski was selected in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Royals in the NBA Draft and was also taken by the Kansas City Bulls in the ABA draft.

A native of Hungary, Attila (uh-TILL-uh) Zsiovczky (zhih-VOSS-key) was a star multi-event track and field student-athlete at K-State from 1997 through 1999. While at K-State, Zsiovczky set a then-indoor school record in the heptathlon with 5,786 points in 1998, a mark that still ranks third all-time and still holds the outdoor school record in the decathlon at 8,379 points, a mark set when he won the European U-23 meet in Sweden in 1999. A two-time Big 12 Indoor Champion in the heptathlon, Zsiovczky also twice placed second at US Outdoor National Championship in the decathlon in 1998 and 1999, to twice earn All-American honors. In addition to his athletic achievements, Zsiovczky was a three-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection. Internationally, Zsiovczky competed from 1994 to 2014 in 24 events across the world, placing in the top 10 on 20 occasions and in the top five 15 times. Along with his win at the European U-23 Championships in 1999, Zsiovczky won a World Junior Championship in the decathlon in 1996 in Australia and finished third in the decathlon at the 2005 World Championships in Finland. Zsiovczky also represented his home country of Hungary in the decathlon at three Summer Olympic games – 2000 in Sydney, finishing eighth, 2004 in Athens, finishing sixth, and 2008 in Beijing.

Morris ended the season with a school-record 14 wins a 2.09 ERA, earning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Midwest Region honors, District Player of the Year, and NCAA Houston All-Regional team honors. Morris was a finalist for two national awards, the College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year Award, and the Golden Spikes Award, given to college baseball’s annual top player. He also became the second Wildcat and first pitcher to ever be named Consensus First Team All-American. Morris set four single-season records including wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts, and saved his best games for the best opponents, going 7-0 with a 1.93 ERA against ranked teams. Morris was a fourth round draft choice by the Washington Nationals in 2009 and played seven seasons in professional baseball, making his MLB debut in 2016 with the Cincinnati Reds and playing with Team Italy at the World Baseball Classic in 2017.Jordy NelsonA walk-on safety from Riley, Kansas as a freshman in 2003, Jordy Nelson eventually switched to wide receiver and blossomed into one of the greatest at that position in program history. As a senior in 2007, Nelson totaled 122 catches for 1,606 yards, both school records that stand today. Named as one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top college wide receiver, Nelson also was named All-Big 12 as a receiver and as a returner, and became the 10th Wildcat to ever be named a Consensus First Team All-American. His 206 career receptions and 2,822 career yards receiving still rank third all-time, while he also finished his career with six punt returns for touchdowns. A second round draft choice by the Green Bay Packers in 2008, Nelson reached stardom with the Packers and in the NFL, winning Super Bowl XLV in 2011, setting the Packers’ single season receiving record in 2014 and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. Nelson also earned the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award in 2016 after missing the 2015 season with an injury and leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns. Nelson retired from the NFL in 2019 after 11 seasons with over 600 receptions, nearly 8,600 yards, and eight Green Bay franchise records. Nelson was placed into K-State football’s Ring of Honor in 2015 and is set to be inducted into Wisconsin’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.Darren SprolesArguably the greatest running back ever to play at K-State, Sproles became a three-time All-American while with the Wildcats. In 2003, Sproles was tabbed First Team All-American, finished fifth in the Heisman voting, and third in the voting for Associated Press Player of the Year, all while helping the Wildcats upset No. 1 Oklahoma en route to their first Big 12 title. Sproles still holds numerous school records, including rushing yardage in a single season with 1,986 yards and in a career with 4,979 yards. A gifted returner, Sproles also still holds all-purpose yardage school records for a single season and in a career. A fourth round pick by San Diego in 2005, Sproles became an instant fan favorite, eventually setting the Chargers franchise record for career kickoff return yards. A few years later in 2011 with the Saints, Sproles set the franchise and NFL single season record for all-purpose yardage at 2,696 yards. Sproles earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2015 after leading the NFL in yards per punt return while with the Eagles and went on to earn three Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors in his 15-year NFL career. Winning 80 matches over four years and making four NCAA Tournaments, Wegner also set the school record for career kills with 1,907, kills per set at 4.48, 20-kill matches with 27, total attacks at nearly 4,900, and total points at 2,161, over 280 more than the next student athlete. She is one of only three Wildcats to post 30 or more kills two or more times in match, including her career high of 35 against Baylor in 1999, which ranks third in school history. Wegner was also the first K-State attacker to post back-to-back seasons of 500 kills or more in school history. Not just an offensive force, Wegner posted over 1,000 digs in her career to be one of only five players ever with over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Her 44 career double-doubles rank fifth all-time, including three matches of over 20 kills and 20 digs, fourth most in K-State history. A three-time All-Big 12 selection, Wegner became the first Wildcat in school history to be named to an NCAA All-Tournament team when she earned the distinction in 2000 for the Mideast Region. Wegner was also a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and earned Second Team Academic All-District honors as a senior.Mike WroblewskiA First Team All-American and school record holder, Mike Wroblewski played for Tex Winter and K-State men’s basketball from 1959-1962. As a senior in 1962, Wroblewski led the Wildcats averaging 19 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for a team that went 22-3 and finished No. 6 in the Associated Press Top 25. His 46 points against rival KU on February 7, 1962 still ranks as the most points in a conference game for K-State, as does his field goals made and attempted from that game. For his efforts, Wroblewski was named a Second Team All-American and First Team All-Big 8 performer. Over his last three years, Wroblewski helped the Wildcats to a 60-18 record, won two Big 8 championships, and appeared in the 1961 Midwest Regional Final (Elite Eight). In 1962, Wroblewski was selected in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Royals in the NBA Draft and was also taken by the Kansas City Bulls in the ABA draft.Attila ZsiovczkyA native of Hungary, Attila (uh-TILL-uh) Zsiovczky (zhih-VOSS-key) was a star multi-event track and field student-athlete at K-State from 1997 through 1999. While at K-State, Zsiovczky set a then-indoor school record in the heptathlon with 5,786 points in 1998, a mark that still ranks third all-time and still holds the outdoor school record in the decathlon at 8,379 points, a mark set when he won the European U-23 meet in Sweden in 1999. A two-time Big 12 Indoor Champion in the heptathlon, Zsiovczky also twice placed second at US Outdoor National Championship in the decathlon in 1998 and 1999, to twice earn All-American honors. In addition to his athletic achievements, Zsiovczky was a three-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection. Internationally, Zsiovczky competed from 1994 to 2014 in 24 events across the world, placing in the top 10 on 20 occasions and in the top five 15 times. Along with his win at the European U-23 Championships in 1999, Zsiovczky won a World Junior Championship in the decathlon in 1996 in Australia and finished third in the decathlon at the 2005 World Championships in Finland. Zsiovczky also represented his home country of Hungary in the decathlon at three Summer Olympic games – 2000 in Sydney, finishing eighth, 2004 in Athens, finishing sixth, and 2008 in Beijing.

K-State Athletics confirms eight total active positives for COVID-19

HILL CITY - The TMP-Marian Monarchs 18U baseball team sent 20 to the plate and scored 15 runs in the fourth inning of game
two of their doubleheader in Hill City Tuesday night, winning 16-2 to gain a
split. Hill City scored nine runs in the third and won the opener 13-2 in four innings.

Jace Wentling had
two of the Monarchs eight hits&nbsp; in the second game and drove in four runs. Noah Gibson had three RBIs
and Nick Helget two. 

Nick Herman
allowed two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and five walks in the
four-inning complete game win. 

Ethan
Atherton drove in both runs in the first game.

In game one, Hill City led 3-0 before the Monarchs (6-2) scored two in the top of the third on an Ethan Atherton two-out, two-run double.

Following the season opener against Lincoln, the Tigers will travel to the northwest portion of Missouri two weeks in a row for a pair of stiff road tests. They go to Maryville in Week 2 to take on defending MIAA Co-Champion Northwest Missouri State, then St. Joseph in Week 3 to take on Missouri Western, the team the Tigers tied with for third place in the MIAA last year at 8-3. The Tigers will be back at home two weeks in a row on October 3 and 10 when they host Central Missouri and Washburn. Homecoming will remain on Saturday, October 3 when the Tigers host defending MIAA Co-Champion Central Missouri. Following the two-game home stand, the Tigers will alternate road and home games week by week for the rest of the season. The last two home opponents for the Tigers this year will be Northeastern State on October 24 and then Emporia State on November 7. Sproles is on the ballot for the first time, while Bishop is a repeat candidate.

“It’s an enormous honor to just be on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot considering more than 5.4 million people have played college football and only 1,027 players have been inducted,” NFF President &amp; CEO Steve Hatchell said. “The Hall’s requirement of being a First Team All-American creates a much smaller pool of about 1,500 individuals who are even eligible. Being in today’s elite group means an individual is truly among the greatest to have ever played the game, and we look forward to announcing the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class Presented by ETT early next year.”

One of the most dynamic players in program history, Bishop played a major role in propelling the Wildcats to their first-ever No. 1 national ranking during the second of his two seasons at K-State (1997-1998). He still holds the K-State season passing efficiency record after a 159.6 rating in 1998 (164-of-295 for 2,844 yards and 23 TDs/4 INTs) in addition to ranking second in season total offense at 3,592 yards.

Bishop went 22-3 as a starter, including a 15-1 mark in Big 12 play, as his 88-percent winning clip is the best mark in school history. He was a two-time All-Big 12 performer, the 1997 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year, winner of the 1998 Davey O’Brien Award and runner up for the Heisman Trophy that year.

Sproles, a 2003 First Team All-American and three-time All-Big 12 performer, held 28 school records at the time of graduation, 21 of which still stand 15 years after his playing days. The Olathe, Kansas, product rushed for 4,979 career yards, nearly 2,000 yards more than the player in second place. Sproles, finished fifth in the 2003 Heisman Trophy voting and third in the Associated Press Player of the Year voting that same season, was a three-time All-American, including earning first-team honors in 2003.

The FBS Honors Court, chaired by NFF Board Member and College Football Hall of Famer Archie Griffin from Ohio State, and the Divisional Honors Court, chaired by former Marshall head coach, longtime athletics director and NFF Board Member Jack Lengyel, include an elite and geographically diverse pool of athletic administrators, Hall of Famers and members of the media.

The announcement of the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class Presented by ETT will be made in early 2021, with specific details to be announced in the future.

for the Hays Larks summer-collegiate baseball team are scheduled to be tested
Tuesday for COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that has created a global
pandemic, after a player tested positive over the weekend.

Monday’s season opener and
Tuesday’s game were canceled after results confirmed a Larks player tested
positive for the virus. He had been feeling ill and took the test Saturday,
with results coming back Sunday.

Frank Leo, who would have been
starting his 38th season as Larks manager with Monday’s non-league
game against the Colorado Springs Outlaws, said the decision on whether to play
this summer rests with the results of Tuesday’s tests. Hays’ next scheduled
game is 7 p.m. Friday at Larks Park against the Colorado Pirates in their Rocky
Mountain Baseball League opener.

“If everyone comes up negative, we’ll
be able to proceed with the season Friday night,” Leo said, adding that if
anybody tests positive “the season is basically done. Everybody’s got to be
negative.”

Ellis County Health Services
Director Jason Kennedy sought guidance from the state on how to proceed, Leo
said. If the season is not canceled, players will be checked regularly for
signs of illness.

“The team will be closely
monitoring temperatures, how the players are feeling, encouraging if you’re not
feeling well don’t come to the ballpark,” Leo said. “We will be diligently
monitoring players on a daily basis.”

Leo said he would be anxiously
awaiting Wednesday’s test results.

“There is no contingency,” he
said. “We’ve got to be negative or we’re done.”

Larks season opener postponed after player tests positive for COVID

UNDATED (AP) - Over the past two weeks, as college athletes have returned to campuses to work out and prepare for sports later this year, a handful of them have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Arkansas State. Houston. Boise State. Iowa State. Oklahoma State. More than a dozen schools in all.

Just how many positive tests isn’t known, however, because college officials are debating exactly what to tell the public. Nearly half the 66 Football Bowl Subdivision members that responded to an Associated Press inquiry last week said they were still deciding whether to disclose the number of athletes with positive tests — and just over half aren’t going to release numbers at all.

“That’s a real challenge,” Memphis athletic director Laird Veatch said. “A lot of us in the profession are trying to work through that. That’s why I think you’ve seen quite a bit of inconsistency across the country in terms of what’s been announced and what hasn’t.”

The inconsistency has been apparent since football players began returning to campus this month for voluntary workouts. Auburn confirmed three players had tested positive; a few days later, rival Alabama declined to confirm reports that as many as eight were positive, citing privacy laws. Boise State said only that a number of athletes had tested positive without providing details.

Arkansas State announced June 4 that seven athletes from three different sports had tested positive for COVID-19 and were self-isolating for 14 days.

“We would have made the same kind of announcement if it had not involved student athletes,” Arkansas State chancellor Kelly Damphousse said in a statement. “Our announcement reinforced the message that our governor had recently shared: Young people are not immune to COVID-19 and you may be infected without realizing it. ... To be transparent, we felt comfortable in acknowledging these positive tests came from our returning student-athletes, as they were the only students who were being tested that week.”

Other schools weren’t as transparent. They’re disclosing the number of positive tests only to public health officials. Syracuse is one of the schools in that group.

“We’re going to do everything we can to respect and protect the privacy rights of our student-athletes while at the same time understanding your colleagues, this is a news item for you, and we’re trying to arrive at the right space and the right way to do both,” Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said.

Athletic programs sometimes avoid making formal injury announcements, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Both are designed to protect the privacy of an individual’s health records. The U.S. Education Department issued guidelines in March that said a school shouldn’t disclose personal identifiable information from student education records to the media even if it determines a health or safety emergency exists.

But is merely revealing a number going to enable anyone to identify which athletes tested positive? That’s up for debate.

Amelia Vance is the director of youth and education privacy at the Future Privacy Forum, a think tank dedicated to data privacy issues. Vance believes releasing the number of positive tests effectively informs the public without sacrificing privacy.

Vance said disclosing the number of positive tests for a certain team would help notify members of the general public who may have come into contact with the athletes and could serve as a guide to those schools that haven’t welcomed students back to campus yet.

“If you’re saying six students tested positive or a student was exposed and therefore we’re having the whole team tested or things like that, that wouldn’t probably be traced back to an individual student,” Vance said. “Therefore, neither (FERPA or HIPAA) is going to apply, so any claim that privacy laws wouldn’t allow that disclosure would be disingenuous.

“The key there is to balance the public interest with the privacy of the students,” she said. “Most of the time, the information colleges and universities need to disclose don’t require the identification of a particular student to the press or general public.”

Florida State has announced at least one athlete had tested positive for coronavirus, but athletic department spokesman Rob Wilson said the school didn’t release an exact number out of concern that might make it “fairly easy to identify who.” Texas Tech said it had positive cases within its men’s basketball program but didn’t reveal the number due to privacy concerns.

Middle Tennessee athletic director Chris Massaro said his school won’t release any numbers until everyone’s back on campus, and it will then note the entire number of students who tested positive without saying how many were athletes. Appalachian State also plans to announce the total number of positive tests without differentiating athletes from the general student population.

As for Memphis, Veatch said none its football players had tested positive yet, giving officials time to decide how to proceed.

“In the future we’re going to have to work through that and really try to balance student-athlete rights with public health and safety,” Veatch said. “We’ll find a way to do that, but we haven’t determined exactly what that’s going to look like yet.”

Royals continue to add undrafted free agents

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball appears headed to its shortest season since the 1870s.

Continuing a contentious back-and-forth in a bitter dispute over pay, baseball players told the commissioner’s office on Saturday night that additional talks to start the season during the coronavirus pandemic are pointless and said owners should order a return to work.

The union’s action might lead to a season of about 50 games rather than the 82 initially proposed by MLB. The Major League Baseball Players Association could respond by filing a grievance that would be heard by arbitrator Mark Irvings, arguing players are owed hundreds of millions of dollars in damages due to a shorter season.

Overall, this all could spark lengthy litigation over money and a renewal of the sport’s labor wars. It could even prompt some star players to sit out.

“It unfortunately appears that further dialogue with the league would be futile,” union head Tony Clark said in a statement. “It’s time to get back to work. Tell us when and where.”

MLB responded with a statement accusing the union of not negotiating in good faith and cited the March agreement that called for prorated salaries but did not obligate teams to play in empty ballparks. Clubs could file a grievance claiming the union did not meet its “good faith” obligation.

“The MLBPA’s position that players are entitled to virtually all the revenue from a 2020 season played without fans is not fair to the thousands of other baseball employees that clubs and our office are supporting financially during this very difficult 2020 season,” the commissioner’s office said in a statement. “We will evaluate the union’s refusal to adhere to the terms of the March agreement, and after consulting with ownership, determine the best course to bring baseball back to our fans.”

While the NBA, NHL and MLS have figured out deals to return in this summer of the coronavirus, baseball has descended into the fractious labor strife that led to eight work stoppages from 1972-95. The union has seethed followed a collective bargaining agreement in late 2016 that led to relatively flat salaries for five straight years, an unsuccessful grievance accusing the Chicago Cubs of manipulating third baseman Kris Bryant’s service time to delay his eligibility for free agency and a grievance accusing teams of improperly using revenue sharing proceeds, a process the union calls “tanking.”

These raw negotiations heighten the chance of a spring training lockout after the current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1, 2021.

“Given your continued insistence on hundreds of millions of dollars of additional pay reductions, we assume these negotiations are at an end,” union chief negotiator Bruce Meyer wrote in a letter to Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem on Saturday that was obtained by The Associated Press. “If it is your intention to unilaterally impose a season, we again request that you inform us and our members of how many games you intend to play and when and where players should report. It is unfair to leave players and the fans hanging at this point, and further delay risks compromising health and safety. We demand that you inform us of your plans by close of business on Monday.”

Players and MLB agreed to a deal on March 26 calling for prorated salaries, $170 million in salary advances and a guarantee of service time for 2020 even if no games are played.

That deal agreement gave baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred the right to start the season provided there were no travel restrictions and games could be played before fans in regular-season ballparks. It called for “good faith” negotiations to play in empty ballparks or neutral sites.

Players insist they should not have to accept additional cuts. A unilateral decision to start play could mean the playoffs would remain at 10 teams and not expand to 16, as both sides have proposed. High-risk players can opt out and still receive salary and service, but others who sit out would lose both.

“The solidarity of the players has never been more concentrated in years,” said Scott Boras, baseball’s most high-profile agent, who has three clients on the union’s eight-man executive subcommittee.

MLB made three economic offers, the last Friday, and the union proposed two. The executive subcommittee held a call Saturday followed by a larger group of about 100 players, including the full executive committee and others.

The sides remain far apart on how much players should get of the $4 billion in salaries they originally were set to earn: MLB has offered to guarantee $1.27 billion and increase the total to $1.45 billion if the postseason is completed. Players want $2.25 billion and an 89-game season.

“Players want to play. It’s who we are and what we do,” Clark said. “Since March, the association has made it clear that our No. 1 focus is playing the fullest season possible, as soon as possible, as safely as possible. Players agreed to billions in monetary concessions as a means to that end, and in the face of repeated media leaks and misdirection we made additional proposals to inject new revenues into the industry — proposals that would benefit the owners, players, broadcast partners, and fans alike. It’s now become apparent that these efforts have fallen upon deaf ears.”

Manfred said last week there is a “100%” chance of a season, adding “unequivocally we are going to play Major League Baseball this year.” Yet, it will be the shortest season in more than a century. And Meyer’s letter to Halem cited remaining open issues in the health protocols needed before players report for a resumption of training.

Owners must now decide whether to go ahead with a shortened schedule, of perhaps 48 or 50 games. A 50-game regular season at prorated salaries would total $1.23 billion, leaving the union to claim about $1 billion plus interest in damages should the case continue to a decision and players prevail.

HAYS – The Hays Eagles 19U baseball team used a couple of
strong pitching performances from two former TMP-Marian Monarchs to sweep the Great Bend Chiefs in their season opening doubleheader Friday evening at the Hays High Field.

Colby Dreiling pitched a complete-game five-hitter in the
Eagles (2-0) 8-2 win in the opener. Dreiling struck out four and walked three.

Carson Jacobs followed that up with a perfect game in a
10-0, five inning run-rule victory in the second game. Jacobs struck out seven
including the final two batters to end the game. Jacobs retired three by line
outs, two on pop outs on the infield and two on fly outs to right field.

Remington Cox led the Eagles 13-hit attack in game two going
3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Brady Kreutzer, Dominic Bainter and
Jack Fields all drove in two runs.

Brock Lummus went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to
lead the Eagles 10-hit attack in the opener. Kreutzer had two hits and scored
two runs. Jacobs drove in three.

The Eagles return to action next Wednesday in a doubleheader
at Buhler.

Mason Robbins allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits over
six innings of relief. Robbins struck out nine and walked one.

In game two, TMP scored three in the second then five in the
third. Jace Wentling, Nick Helget, Zeke Haag and Tyson Dinkel all drove in runs
in the third. Mason Robbins had three of the Monarchs 13 hits.

Monarchs 18U sweeps the Salina Eagles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Royals made four selections on the second and final day of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft:&nbsp;Ben Hernandez, a right-handed pitcher from De La Salle Institute (Ill.) in the second round (No. 41 overall);&nbsp;Tyler Gentry, an outfielder from the University of Alabama in the third round (No. 76 overall);&nbsp;Christian Chamberlain, a left-handed pitcher from Oregon State University in the fourth round (No. 105 overall); and&nbsp;Will Klein, a right-handed pitcher from Eastern Illinois University in the fifth round (No. 135 overall).

They join yesterday’s first-round picks&nbsp;Asa Lacy, a left-handed pitcher from Texas A&amp;M University, who was selected fourth overall, and&nbsp;Nick Loftin, a shortstop from Baylor University, who was selected 32nd&nbsp;overall, to represent the Royals’ 2020 Draft class.

Hernandez, 18, went 4-2 with a 1.81 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 45.0 innings as a junior last season, but has not pitched in 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak. Hernandez, according to MLB.com, was the “best pitcher” in the inaugural Prospect Development Pipeline League, in which he recorded 6.0 hitless innings over three outings. He also excelled in his appearance at the&nbsp;Under Armour&nbsp;All-America Game, striking out the side in the ninth inning. Hernandez is committed to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Gentry, 21, hit .429 (24-for-56) in 17 games during the shortened 2020 season for Alabama, and ranked second in the SEC with a .554 on-base percentage and fifth in the conference with a .750 slugging percentage. As a sophomore in 2019, he led the Crimson Tide in batting average (.310, hits (65, home runs (13, RBI (42, slugging percentage (.552) and total bases (116, and ended his two-year career in Tuscaloosa with 17 home runs in just 266 at-bats. Gentry went undrafted out of Arlington High School (Tenn.) in 2017 and attended Walters State Community College in 2018, where he led the Senators to the finals of the Junior College Baseball World Series.

Chamberlain, 20, went 2-1 with a 0.82 ERA (2 ER in 22.0 IP) and 34 strikeouts (13.9 K/9) in four starts this season at Oregon State, including a career-high 12 strikeouts in 5.1 innings on Feb. 21 vs. Mississippi State. He worked mostly as a reliever in his first two years in college, making 37 of his 46 appearances out of the bullpen, and has recorded 140 strikeouts in 105.0 collegiate innings (12.0 K/9). As a freshman in 2018, he matched a College World Series record with 11 strikeouts in one relief outing, eight of which came on his curveball. Chamberlain went undrafted out of Reno High School (Nev.) in 2017.

Klein, 20, went 1-2 with a 3.33 ERA (9 ER in 24.1 IP) and a team-high 33 strikeouts (12.2 K/9) in four starts this season at Eastern Illinois. He was named the best pitcher in the Northwoods League by&nbsp;Baseball America&nbsp;in 2019, after going 2-2 with a 0.86 ERA (2 ER in 21.0 IP, 38 strikeouts (16.3 K/9) and seven saves for Lakeshore, earning league All-Star honors. Klein went undrafted in 2017 out of Bloomington North High School (Ind.).

Yesterday in the first round, Lacy became the fourth player chosen fourth overall in Royals history, joining&nbsp;Christian Colón&nbsp;(2010,&nbsp;Mike Stodolka&nbsp;(2000)&nbsp;and Jeff Austin&nbsp;(1998). He went 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA (2 ER in 24.0 IP, 46 strikeouts (17.3 K/9, just eight walks (3.0 BB/9) and a .111 opponents’ average in four starts as a junior, prior to the season being suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Loftin became the first college shortstop to be drafted by the Royals in the first round since&nbsp;Hunter Dozier&nbsp;was selected eighth overall in the 2013 Draft. Loftin was named preseason Big 12 Player of the Year by&nbsp;Baseball America&nbsp;and hit .298 in 14 games, before the 2020 season was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Of the Royals’ six selections in the 2020 Draft, four were pitchers (including two left handers). They also selected one shortstop and one outfielder. Five of the six picks were college players (83.3%). Last season, 35 of the Royals’ 41 draft picks were from the college ranks (85.4%).

Beginning at 8:00 a.m. CT on Sunday, June 14, any player who was eligible for the 2020 First-Year Player Draft but was not selected, will be free to sign with any team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Royals made four selections on the second and final day of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft:&nbsp;Ben Hernandez, a right-handed pitcher from De La Salle Institute (Ill.) in the second round (No. 41 overall);&nbsp;Tyler Gentry, an outfielder from the University of Alabama in the third round (No. 76 overall);&nbsp;Christian Chamberlain, a left-handed pitcher from Oregon State University in the fourth round (No. 105 overall); and&nbsp;Will Klein, a right-handed pitcher from Eastern Illinois University in the fifth round (No. 135 overall).They join yesterday’s first-round picks&nbsp;Asa Lacy, a left-handed pitcher from Texas A&amp;M University, who was selected fourth overall, and&nbsp;Nick Loftin, a shortstop from Baylor University, who was selected 32nd&nbsp;overall, to represent the Royals’ 2020 Draft class.Hernandez, 18, went 4-2 with a 1.81 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 45.0 innings as a junior last season, but has not pitched in 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak. Hernandez, according to MLB.com, was the “best pitcher” in the inaugural Prospect Development Pipeline League, in which he recorded 6.0 hitless innings over three outings. He also excelled in his appearance at the&nbsp;Under Armour&nbsp;All-America Game, striking out the side in the ninth inning. Hernandez is committed to the University of Illinois at Chicago.Gentry, 21, hit .429 (24-for-56) in 17 games during the shortened 2020 season for Alabama, and ranked second in the SEC with a .554 on-base percentage and fifth in the conference with a .750 slugging percentage. As a sophomore in 2019, he led the Crimson Tide in batting average (.310, hits (65, home runs (13, RBI (42, slugging percentage (.552) and total bases (116, and ended his two-year career in Tuscaloosa with 17 home runs in just 266 at-bats. Gentry went undrafted out of Arlington High School (Tenn.) in 2017 and attended Walters State Community College in 2018, where he led the Senators to the finals of the Junior College Baseball World Series.Chamberlain, 20, went 2-1 with a 0.82 ERA (2 ER in 22.0 IP) and 34 strikeouts (13.9 K/9) in four starts this season at Oregon State, including a career-high 12 strikeouts in 5.1 innings on Feb. 21 vs. Mississippi State. He worked mostly as a reliever in his first two years in college, making 37 of his 46 appearances out of the bullpen, and has recorded 140 strikeouts in 105.0 collegiate innings (12.0 K/9). As a freshman in 2018, he matched a College World Series record with 11 strikeouts in one relief outing, eight of which came on his curveball. Chamberlain went undrafted out of Reno High School (Nev.) in 2017.Klein, 20, went 1-2 with a 3.33 ERA (9 ER in 24.1 IP) and a team-high 33 strikeouts (12.2 K/9) in four starts this season at Eastern Illinois. He was named the best pitcher in the Northwoods League by&nbsp;Baseball America&nbsp;in 2019, after going 2-2 with a 0.86 ERA (2 ER in 21.0 IP, 38 strikeouts (16.3 K/9) and seven saves for Lakeshore, earning league All-Star honors. Klein went undrafted in 2017 out of Bloomington North High School (Ind.).Yesterday in the first round, Lacy became the fourth player chosen fourth overall in Royals history, joining&nbsp;Christian Colón&nbsp;(2010,&nbsp;Mike Stodolka&nbsp;(2000)&nbsp;and Jeff Austin&nbsp;(1998). He went 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA (2 ER in 24.0 IP, 46 strikeouts (17.3 K/9, just eight walks (3.0 BB/9) and a .111 opponents’ average in four starts as a junior, prior to the season being suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.Loftin became the first college shortstop to be drafted by the Royals in the first round since&nbsp;Hunter Dozier&nbsp;was selected eighth overall in the 2013 Draft.
