IRVING, Texas&nbsp;– Kansas senior Marcus Garrett is a unanimous selection for the Preseason All-Big 12 Team as selected by the conference coaches, the league announced Wednesday. The coaches were not allowed to vote for members of their own team.

The 2020 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, last season Garrett led the Big 12 in assists (4.6) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.7). The guard from Dallas also ranked among the Big 12 leaders in steals (fifth at 1.8). Garrett averaged 4.5 deflections per game, including 6.9 in his last nine outings. For the season, Garrett averaged 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He was the 2020 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, USBWA All-District VI, All-Big 12 Second Team and a unanimous Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection.

Joining Garrett on the six-member Preseason All-Big 12 Team were Jared Butler (Baylor), Austin Reeves (Oklahoma), Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State), Matt Coleman II (Texas) and Oscar Tshiebwe (West Virginia). There was a tie in the coaches’ votes, hence six players being named.

HAYS – It took five sets for the TMP-Marian Monarchs and the
Goodland Cowgirls to determine a winner Tuesday night in the first round of the
3A state volleyball tournament at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays. But it was Goodland who came away with the victory winning 25-23,
20-25, 25-20, 15-25 and 16-14.

In the first set of the night the two teams traded rallies
before Goodland was able to build a 16-10 lead. Only to see TMP scored six of
the next seven points and tie the match at 17. Goodland answered with four of the
next five points and hold off a late TMP rally to win 25-23.

Emily Lane had six kills in the first set for TMP.

In the second set, TMP scored the first six points of the
match and built leads of 11-6 and 16-10. Goodland was never really able to
close gap as TMP went on to win set number two 25-17.

TMP ran out to an early 4-2 lead but with the set tied at
four Goodland outscored TMP 13-4 to build a 17-10 lead. TMP was able to close
the gap to two at 18-16 but Goodland went on to the 25-20 win.

The fourth set was very similar to the second set. TMP, facing
elimination outscored Goodland 14-6 to open the set. Lane had five kills for
the Monarchs in the first 14 points. She finished with seven in the set. TMP
won the fourth set 25-15.

With the match tied at two games apiece, the match went to
the fifth and final set and Goodland would come away with the 16-14 win.

Goodland opened the set leading 8-3 but TMP clawed their way
back into it and took a 9-8 lead. The game was tied at 10 before Goodland faced
a set and match point at 14-11 but Goodland committed error and Lane recorded a
pair of kills tying the set at 14. But Goodland got a point on a hit that went
out of bounds and Lane couldn’t handle a ball at the end that resulted in the
Goodland 16-14 win.

Lane recorded 24 kills in the match for TMP.

Goodland advances to the pool play portion of the state
tournament Saturday in Hutchinson.

CLAFLIN - The Victoria volleyball team had won two of their three meetings with Central Prairie League rival Central Plains entering their 1A Division I state quarterfinal match Tuesday, but the Oilers won the match that mattered, defeating Knights 25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10 to advance to pool play at the state tournament.

The defending 1A state champion Oilers (28-11) led most of the way, but by never more than three, in a back-and-forth first set.

The Knights (26-6) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set but Central Plains scored four straight to take the lead for good. Leading 5-4, they scored six straight to push their advantage to 11-4. Victoria would pull within two on several occasions before the Oilers scored seven of the last eight points to grab a 2-0 lead.

Victoria again raced out to a quick start in the third set, building a 4-1 lead. The Knights found themselves down 16-12 when they would put together an 8-2 run to go up 20-18. The Oilers scored four of the next five points to take the lead back at 22-21. Victoria would score four of the final five points to close out the match.

The fourth set was tied 6-6 when Central Plains took control by scoring the next six points. It was the start of a 18-2 run to blow the match open.

St. John-Hudson and Lebo also locked up spots to the semifinals Saturday at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City. St. John -Hudson defeated Kiowa County 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 and Lebo knocked off Centralia 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 9-25, 15-9.

Pratt-Skyline had their match at Rosalia-Flinthills postponed to Wednesday due to poor travel conditions.

DENVER (AP) — On a freezing afternoon in the snow, Patrick Mahomes barely broke a sweat.

The Kansas City Chiefs routed the Broncos 43-16 for their 10th consecutive win over Denver despite failing to convert a single third down (0-for-8) and getting just 200 yards and at touchdown from their star quarterback.

The Chiefs got a pick-6, a kickoff return for a TD, two rushing TDs, including one from his backup, and three field goals to more than make up for Mahomes’ pedestrian numbers.

“I deal with him every day and all he wants to do is win,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It’s crazy. You know how he’s wired. But that’s what’s real every day. He wants to rip your heart out when he’s out there playing. He wants to do well and do all that. But when other people are scoring, he’s jumping up and down, likewise. He just wants to win. That’s the beauty of him.”

“Whenever you feel like you don’t play a great game offensively and you win by 27 it’s a good feeling,” Mahomes said. “A win’s a win.”

“I can play a whole lot better, and I’m going to,” said Broncos QB Drew Lock, who threw for 254 yards with no TDs and two interceptions.

Mahomes completed 15 of 23 passes but said he only worries about results, not statistics.

“A young Patrick would’ve probably tried to force it and thrown a ball and maybe made a bad interception or something like that,” Mahomes said, relaying a conversation he had with teammate Tyrann Mathieu. “Whereas, now, seeing the way the defense was playing and knowing it’s not there, just kind of either taking the sack or not completing the pass and throwing it away” is the way to go.

“You have to learn ways to win in this league,” Mahomes said. “It’s not always going to be 400 passing yards or 200 rushing yards or whatever it is. It’s going to be finding ways to win. I think this team is doing a great job of doing that.”

The Chiefs (6-1) found other ways to dominate Denver (2-4) on a snowy afternoon that began with a temperature of 14 degrees at kickoff, the coldest October game in Broncos history.

Kansas City took a 24-9 halftime lead even though Mahomes completed just one pass in the second quarter and had only 99 yards through the air in the first half.

Mahomes finally extended his NFL-leading streak to 17 consecutive games with a touchdown throw when he hit Tyreek Hill from 10 yards to make it 37-9 with 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes’ lone TD throw followed the Chiefs’ fourth takeaway, an interception by Mathieu when rookie KJ Hamler let Lock’s pass bounce off him and right into the arms of the Chiefs star safety.

A week after the Chiefs ran more times than they threw it for the first time in Reid’s eight seasons in Kansas City, it was K.C.’s ground game, special teams and defense that did the damage in Denver in the NFL’s first snow game of 2020.

In the first half, the Chiefs scored touchdowns on Byron Pringle’s 102--yard kickoff return&nbsp;and Daniel Sorensen’s 50-yard interception return&nbsp;to go with Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s 11-yard run in which he broke five tackles.

“You’re not going to beat a team like Kansas City doing that,” lamented Broncos coach Vic Fangio, whose team has been outscored 96-25 in three games against the Chiefs.

Edwards-Hilaire carved his way through a wall of Denver defenders to open the scoring on a snowy, freezing afternoon.

Running up the middle, the rookie plowed through linebacker Alexander Johnson and defensive backs Kareem Jackson, Bryce Callahan, Justin Simmons and Michael Ojemudia like a bowling ball knocking down pins.

The Broncos responded with Lock’s first career touchdown, from 2 yards, but Brandon McManus missed the extra point, leaving Kansas City ahead 7-6, and the Chiefs would never trail.

This game marked the first time running backs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay were both healthy since the opener, but Lindsay went out with a concussion just before halftime after gaining 79 yards on nine carries. He didn’t return.

Gordon, who missed last week’s win at New England with strep throat a few days after his arrest for driving under the influence, scored a touchdown but turned the ball over twice, including on a failed flea flicker&nbsp;on Denver’s first drive of the second half.

Frank Clark recovered the loose ball, leading to a field goal and a 27-9 lead.

Le'Veon Bell ran six times for 39 yards in his Chiefs debut, and Edwards-Helaire had 46 yards on eight carries.

Lock gave Broncos fans a scare on a scramble, falling awkwardly when his left knee brace got caught in the grass.

“That was weird. I’ve worn that brace for three years now and never once has that happened to me,” Lock said. “I tried to stand up and the brace was locked, so that’s why I had to fall back down. Because if I was to keep trying to stand up, both ends of that brace were going to cut me.”

Ridge 25-16, 26-24 to win the Stockton 1A Division I Sub-State Saturday and advance to
Tuesday’s state quarterfinals.

The sixth-ranked Knights received a first-round bye then defeated Decatur Community 25-15,
25-13 in the semifinals.

The Knights (26-5) will play league rival Central Plains in the state quarterfinals Tuesday in Claflin. The Oilers (27-11) defeated top-seed and host Sylvan-Lucas 22-25, 25-12, 25-18 to advance.

The Monarchs (30-7) defeated the seventh-ranked Panthers
25-19, 25-20. They will host Goodland Tuesday at 6:00 pm at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse. The Cowgirls were the No. 1 seed and won the Scott City Sub-State.

The winner advances to the four-team 3A state tournament Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Monarchs beat Russell 25-11, 25-17 in the opening round then avenged their loss in last year's sub-state finals to Beloit with a 25-23, 25-21 win over the Trojans in the semifinals.

NORTON – The TMP-Marian girls’ cross country team had five
runners finish in the top-20 and won the won the Norton 3A Regional Saturday at
the Prairie Dog Golf Course in Norton.

The regional championship qualifies the Monarchs for next Saturday’s 3A State Cross
Country Meet in Wamego. 

The Monarchs scored 26 points, three less than second place Norton.

Sophomore Sophia Allen led the Monarchs with a time of 21:26.24 and placed seventh. Senior Abby Rueschhoff placed ninth (21:47.02), senior Kyleigh Allen
12th (22:15.94), freshman Allison Weber 13th (22:16.15) and sophomore Julianna
Baalmann 18th (22:58.62).

The Monarch boys finished third, 47 points behind second place Minneapolis.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Phillip Brooks returned a pair of punts for touchdowns, Kansas State took advantage of an embarrassing day of special teams by its biggest rival, and the No. 20 Wildcats rolled to a 55-14 victory over Kansas on Saturday.

Will Howard threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns while Justin Gardner returned an interception 25 yards for another score, helping the Wildcats (4-1) improve to 4-0 in the Big 12 for the first time since 2014.

Deuce Vaughn added 71 yards rushing and another touchdown as Kansas State beat the Jayhawks (0-5, 0-4) for a series-record 12th straight time. Kansas has not beaten its Interstate 70 rival since Nov. 1, 2008, in Lawrence.

Freshman Jalon Daniels was just 22 of 39 for 207 yards for the Jayhawks, who were playing their first game since coach Les Miles returned from a positive COVID-19 test. It also was their first game since running back Pooka Williams, an All-Big 12 selection a year ago, decided to opt out for the remainder of the season.

Along with giving up two punt return TDs, the Jayhawks also had two punts nearly returned for scores and were lousy in their own return game. They also watched Jacob Borcila bang a field-goal attempt off the upright.

The lopsided score allowed Kansas State coach Chris Klieman to empty his bench early in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats’ offense actually struggled early behind their own freshman quarterback, making his second start in place of the injured Skylar Thompson. But their defense and special teams scored 27 points in staking them to a 34-7 halftime lead.

The first points came when the Jayhawks were forced to punt, and a penalty for running into the kicker gave them a do-over. Brooks made them pay for taking it, scooting 55 yards for the touchdown.

Blake Lynch added a couple field goals before Gardner stepped in front of Daniels’ throw-back screen pass and pranced into the end zone to make it 20-0. And when the Jayhawks finally got a TD of their own, Howard answered with a touchdown to Sammy Wheeler and Brooks brought back his second punt for a touchdown on the final play of the first half.

The Wildcats put the game away with three consecutive scoring drives to start the second half.

In the first half alone, referee Kevin Hassell had to overturn an interception that hit the ground, a fumble when the ball-carrier already was down and a touchdown catch in which the Jayhawks’ Andrew Parchment landed out of bounds. Hassell also overturned a targeting penalty and announced holding on the wrong team.

Kansas punter Donovan Gagen had a day to forget. He was crushed after unloading a punt, was lit up on Brooks’ return for a score, then had to make a TD-saving tackle on which he appeared to hurt his left shoulder.

Kansas had lost its previous 11 games to the Wildcats by an average of 26 points, so Miles’s second loss was particularly gruesome. The Jayhawks’ losing streak began under Mark Mangino, continued under Turner Gill and Charlie Weis, included interim coach Clint Bowen and four years under David Beaty.

Kansas State had seven penalties in the first quarter but just one the rest of the way. The Wildcats also showed off their trademark discipline by going 6 for 6 in the red zone and improving to plus-9 in turnovers on the season.

Kansas State heads to Morgantown next Saturday to take on West Virginia. Kansas heads home to face Iowa State.

BARTON COUNTY – The Hays High girls’ cross country team finished six points out of third place and just missed qualifying for next weeks 5A State Championships. The Indians finished in fourth Saturday at the Great Bend 5A Regional run at the
Lake Barton Golf Course.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualify for next Saturday's state meet at the 4 Mile Creek Resort in Andover.

HHS freshman freshman Arely Maldonado qualified for state as an individual after a ninth place finish (20:16.59).&nbsp;

Maize South placed
three in the top four and won the team title with 24 points. Great Bend finished
in second place with 68 points and Valley Center third with 84.

Maize won the boys race, three points better than Maize
South. Great Bend finished third. The Hays High boys placed sixth.

Freshman Leonardo Hernandez led the Indians with a 16th
place finish (17:48.73).

BARTON COUNTY – The Hays High girls’ cross country team finished six points out of third place and just missed qualifying for next weeks 5A State Championships. The Indians finished in fourth Saturday at the Great Bend 5A Regional run at the

🏃‍♀️ HHS' Maldonado qualifies for state

TRIBUNE, Kan. – The La Crosse boys cross country team finished
in second place at the Greeley County 1A Regional Saturday at the Prairie Ridge
Golf Course and qualified for next Saturday’s 1A state meet at the Sand Plum
Nature Trail in Victoria.

The Leopards scored 46 points, 17 behind regional champion
Meade. Quinter finished in third palce with 50 points.

La Crosse senior Blake Pierce won the regional title with a
time of 17:45.95, around 15 seconds faster than Michael Gallegos of
Montezuma-South Gray.

Ness City senior Seth Flax finished in seventh place with a
time of 18:32.80). Jonathan Hamel of Stockton placed eighth (18:47.39). Quinter’s
Eli Gruenbacher finished in ninth place (18:54.62).

The Quinter girls’ finished second to qualify for the state
meet as a team. They scored 37 points, 12 behind Meade.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Leah Anstaett who
finished in sixth place (22:56.32). Kaydence Kendall of La Crosse qualified for
state with a ninth place finish (23:22.37).

LAKIN – The TMP-Marian Monarchs shrugged off a slow start in
route&nbsp; to a huge win over the Lakin
Broncs Friday night as they clinched their first district title since 2002 with
a 46-14 win.

On just the third offensive play of the game the Monarchs
fumbled the center-quarterback exchange that gave Lakin the ball deep in TMP
territory. To make matters worse the Monarchs were offsides and the first play
on defense giving Lakin the ball at the TMP 37-yard line.

The Broncs wasted no time driving down the field in just
three plays and taking the lead on a five-yard touchdown run. They added the
two-point conversion and led 8-0 just about two and a half minutes into the
contest.

TMP’s all-league return man Kade Harris got TMP on the board
when he returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to cut Lakin’s lead to 8-7 after
the extra-point.

On the next possession Lakin turned it over on downs and
midfield and that set up Harris’ first of four touchdown passes on the night.
This one from 18 yards out to Andrew Schwartz. 

With TMP lead 13-7 early in the second quarter Harris again
found Schwartz on a 71-yard touchdown pass that put TMP up 20-7.

A little more than two minutes later Harris scored on a
10-yard run as TMP took a 26-7 lead.

On their first offensive play following the touchdown Lakin
scored on a 80-yard halfback pass to cut the deficit to 26-14.

Harris threw his third first-half touchdown on the next drive
to Jace Wentling, his fifth in three weeks giving TMP a 33-14 lead.

Late in the first-half with Lakin driving again the Broncs
running back Allen Martinez fumbled and Schwartz picked it up and returned it
53 yards for the touchdown. It was his second defense touchdown of the second
and the team’s fourth.

Harris added his fourth and final touchdown pass of the game
in the third quarter, a 41-yard shovel pass that put TMP on top 46-14.

Harris finished 7-of-9 passing for a career-high 263 yards
and four touchdowns.

Schwartz had 89 receiving yards on two touchdown receptions.
Mark Rack also collected of pair of receptions for 65 yards.

Lakin’s Allen Martinez tallied 165 yards on 27 carries.
