HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs rallied from down nine points
in the third quarter to upend the Cimarron Bluejays with a 16-12 win Friday
night at Lewis Field.

Friday’s nights matchup between the top two teams in 2A district
seven was as good as advertised with the two teams playing to a 0-0 tie after
the first quarter and a 3-0 TMP lead at the halftime break.

The only points came with just under 4:30 to play in the
second quarter on a 25-yard field goal from TMP’s Jace Wentling.

The scoring began two pick up in the second half when
Cimarron scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass following a TMP turnover. But a blocked
extra-point by Lance Lang left the scored at 6-3 Cimarron.

TMP turned it over for a second straight possession, and the
third time in the game on the ensuing possession and Cimarron marched right
down the field and scored on a Braxton Harrison eight-yard touchdown run. He
had runs of 25 and 11 yards on the drive before the touchdown. But TMP was able
to keep Cimarron out of the endzone on the two point try keeping the score 12-3
3:44 to play in the third quarter.

The Monarchs had an answer this time as sophomore
quarterback Kade Harris hit Jace Wentling for a 69-yard touchdown that pulled
TMP within three with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter. 

Midway through the fourth quarter a pass from Cimarron’s
quarterback deflected off his receiver’s hands and was intercepted by TMP’s
Harris. 

A good return set the Monarchs up inside the Bluejays red
zone and on third-down and goal Harris found Wentling in the endzone for the
second time, this time from four-yards out. After the Wentling extra-point TMP
led 16-12 with just under three minutes to play.

Cimarron was putting together a drive as time expired by TMP’s
Kenton Ginther and Kaleb Hagans recorded their first career sacks on back-to-back
plays that gave TMP the ball back on a turnover on downs by the Bluejays and
help the Monarchs secure the 16-12 win.

TMP outgains Cimarron 290to 236 yards of total offense. 

Harris completed 6-of-10 passes for 136 yards, two
touchdowns and one interception. He added a team-high 86rushing yards.

Wentling has now catch a pass in 15 of his last 16 games and
has four touchdown receptions in the last two weeks.

The Monarchs improved to 3-0 in games decided by seven points
or less.

They are 6-1 for the first time since 1989 and earned their
first six-game win streak since 2002. They are also 4-0 and sit atop 2A district
number seven heading into a week eight matchup with Lakin.

Cimarron dropped to 4-3 and 3-1 in the district.

Hays took its undefeated record on the road to Maize South on Friday night. The Mavericks ended the Indians' season in the playoffs in 2019. The Indians punted after just three plays to open the game. Maize South then fumbled the ball on their first play of offense. Hays High took advantage with Jaren Kanak scoring three plays later from 23 yards out for a 7-0 lead.

Maize South tied the game less than four minutes later on a 10 yard touchdown pass. It was the first points allowed in the first quarter by the Hays High defense this season.&nbsp;

The Indians thought they took the lead back on their next possession but a third down touchdown run was called back on a penalty. Hays would miss a 39-yard field goal one play later.

Maize South snapped off back to back touchdowns on a 14-play and 5-play drive for a 21-7 halftime lead.

Hays refused to go away in the second half. The Indians would shut out the Mavericks in the second half, a team that averages 44 points per game. Wyatt Crain picked off a pass to open the second half. Hays would go six plays for 53 yards and score on a fourth down touchdown pass from Jaren Kanak to Bryce Salmans for 23 yards.&nbsp;

Hays continued to shutout the Mavericks and took over the ball at the Maize South 17 following a fumbled punt snap. Hays, though, would fail to score after a 15-yard dead ball penalty.&nbsp;

The Indians had one shot left. Hays High took over the ball at their own two yard line driving 98 yards for a 21-20 deficit. Hays elected to go for two but failed to convert with 2:38 remaining in the game. Maize South recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

Hays falls to 5-1 on the year while Maize South improves to 4-2. Kanak carried the ball 36 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw for 90 yards on 5 of 6 passing and one score.

Hays is scheduled to host Kapaun next Friday at Lewis Field Stadium.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Although cleared by medical officials, Kansas football coach Les Miles will not travel with the Jayhawks for Saturday's game at West Virginia.

In a statement Friday, the university said Miles has been cleared to travel to Morgantown but will not out of caution.

&nbsp;Statement from Head Coach Les Miles “Yesterday, I received clearance from Kansas Team Health to travel with our football team to Morgantown. I am very grateful for the high level of care that I have received throughout my time since I tested positive for COVID-19 early last week. I continue to feel healthy and strong, and was fortunate to only have mild symptoms. “However, after much consideration and several in-depth conversations with the medical team, our coaching staff, and Kansas Athletics administration, I have made the difficult decision to not make the trip to West Virginia. While my 10-day isolation window was completed this morning, there is too much still unknown about this virus for me to feel 100 percent confident that I won’t transmit it to someone who comes into close contact with me on the team charter, hotel or at the game Saturday. “As we continue to work our way through this pandemic, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our players, coaches and staff that make up this great team. The Hays Middle School 8th grade A-team won the Middle School Western Athletic Conference title.

The Falcons defeated the No. 1 seed Horace Good MS out of Garden City 25-18. 25-21 in the championship match Oct. 10.

The other HMS teams finished runner-up at the MSWAC Tournament.

The 8th grade B-team finished their season 15-4, the 7th grade A-team finished 16-5 and the 7th grade B-team was 11-7 on the season.

The document was recommended to the group by the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force and awaits review and consideration by the CEO Council during the next two weeks. Along with the Task Force, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.uscah.com/">U.S. Council for Athletes Health</a>, a partner of the MIAA, has advised the conference regarding the upcoming winter season. Another item approved by the AAC was to finalize a Thursday and Saturday format for the 2020-2021 MIAA basketball schedule. The schedule format is designed to assist teams in meeting COVID-19 testing protocols this year. With limited exceptions for finals and facility conflicts, all weeks for the 22-game MIAA basketball schedule will follow a Thursday and Saturday format.&nbsp;&nbsp; The AAC also took action to set the start dates of MIAA spring competition schedules for volleyball and women’s soccer. MIAA announces basketball schedule format, spring competition start dates for soccer, volleyball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Le’Veon Bell two days after he was released by the New York Jets.

The team announced the move Thursday to add another potential dynamic offensive player to an offense that already features Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.

“Kansas City, #ChiefsKingdom, thank you for the opportunity let’s go!” Bell tweeted.

Bell was cut by the Jets after a disappointing tenure in New York that lasted less than two full seasons. Bell and coach Adam Gase appeared to not mesh since the running back signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with $35 million guaranteed last year as a free agent.

Bell spent his first six NFL years in Pittsburgh, and was an All-Pro twice and ranking second in the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 7,996 from 2012-17.

He sat out the entire 2018 season in a contract dispute with the Steelers. He became a free agent and joined the Jets in March 2019 and was expected to be a dynamic presence in Gase’s offense.

Instead, Bell never consistently flashed the skills that made him one of the NFL’s best dual threat running backs before sitting out. He rushed for 789 yards and three touchdowns and also wasn’t as prominently featured in the passing game as expected, catching 66 passes for 461 yards and a score.

Bell averaged 3.22 yards per carry in two seasons with the Jets, the second lowest in the league among qualifying backs during that span. He also had the fifth-lowest yards per touch from scrimmage at 4.0

HAYS - After having their season cut short less than 24-hours
before the start of their first-round game at the NCAA Tournament this past
March, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team is back on the court with
their first official practices of the 2020-21 season.

The Tigers graduated four of the most decorated seniors in
program history and have six true-freshmen on the roster.

“We have a lot of new faces and although they’re all pretty
talented kids it just takes a while to get everything straight and for them to
know where they’re going” said 13th year head coach Tony Hobson.

“There’s not two of three of them that I just took a shot on
and hoping they develop.” Hobson said. “These are all pretty accomplished
players and [we’re] looking for a lot of big contributors out of that class.”

The Tigers return three seniors led by starting point guard
Jaden Hobbs who earned third-team All-MIAA honors last season after leading the
team with 12.6 points per game and was second in the MIAA and third in FHSU program
history with 4.7 assists per game.

Whitney Randall is expected to move into a full-time
starting role after starting in 20 of the Tigers 30 games a season ago. Randall
averaged 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Madison Mittie came off the bench in all 30 games last season
and averaged 4.0 points in 13.7 minutes per contest.

FHSU also returns juniors Cydney Bergman, Hailey Walker and
Cassidy Haufler. Bergman is expected to play an even bigger role this season
after averaging 7.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game off the bench last season.


Walker missed the first portion of last season with a shoulder
injury. She played in 19 games and averaged 2.0 points. Haufler appeared in 19
games and averaged 1.8 points and 2.0 rebounds.

Sophomores Lauryn Reither and Allison McFarren both received
valuable playing time as true freshman last season. 

Reither, who was coming off a knee injury in high school,
played in 25 games and averaged 2.8 points and dished out 25 assists, eight of
them in a win against Saint Mary in late November.

McFarren appeared in 22 games and averaged 2.6 points per
game. She scored a career-high 15 which included 3-for-3 shooting from behind
the 3-point line against Emporia State.

The Tigers have had their exhibition games with UConn and
Kansas State canceled and are unsure if they will be able to schedule and
scrimmages before their season opener against Washburn on Wednesday, November 19.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs will be without offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele and wide receiver Sammy Watkins when they visit the Buffalo Bills on Monday night for a game that was pushed back because of COVID-19 protocols.

Osmele tore tendons in both of his knees and Watkins hurt his hamstring during Sunday’s loss to the Raiders, which also ended the Chiefs’ franchise-record 13-game win streak. Mike Remmers finished the game at guard and will get the start in Buffalo, coach Andy Reid said Thursday, and Mecole Hardman will take most of the snaps in Watkins’s place.

“I’m prepared,” Hardman said. “I did it last year when Tyreek (Hill) went down and Sammy went down one time, too. I’m prepared for the challenge. It’s nothing I can’t handle. I’m practicing hard, doing what I can do. Just see what Coach Reid has in store for me, what they want me to do, and just do it the best I can.”

Osemele is likely to have season-ending surgery, though it has not yet taken place. Watkins could miss more than one game, but Reid said that placing him on injured reserve is not an option that is being discussed.

Middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens also missed Thursday’s practice with an illness, though it was not related to COVID-19, and fullback Anthony Sherman will be unavailable on Monday night after he landed on the COVID-19 list.

In other words, the Chiefs (4-1) will be down at least three starters when they try to get back on the winning track against the Bills (4-1), who also lost this past week to doubly foil what was nearly a showdown of unbeaten teams.

“We’ve been fortunate to win enough games that we haven’t had to deal with it too much,” Reid said. “Learn from the things that took place Monday and let’s make sure we correct those. That’s what’s real. And then get yourself ready to play a good Buffalo team and travel and so on. All our energy and time and so on should be focused on those things there. Learn from your mistakes and then jump in and exhaust yourself learning about Buffalo.”

The game was supposed to be played Thursday night, but it was moved as part of the NFL’s massive schedule restructuring in the wake of COVID-19 testing. The Bills had their game against Tennessee pushed to this past Tuesday night, forcing the league to scrap any Thursday night game by moving their matchup with Kansas City to late afternoon Monday.

Their game against the Ravens was scheduled for primetime while their game the next week against the Patriots was moved back a day because of positive COVID-19 tests on New England quarterback Cam Newton and a Chiefs practice squad player.

🏈 Chiefs down several offensive pieces with Buffalo on deck

TOPEKA, Kan - When the champions are handed the
KSHSAA State Trophy Saturday, Oct. 17 at the <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Tennis/StateGirls.cfm">Girls State Tennis Tournament</a>, it will be the first since the
final ball knocked down pins in Wichita at state bowling, March 6th. Two
hundred twenty-five days separate the two achievements.

The 2020-21 postseason is upon us and
the KSHSAA could not be more excited to see students competing for the
culminating prize at the end of their season. However, the real accomplishment
has come in the ability to participate.

“We are very proud of the students,
coaches and administrators who have faithfully adhered to the mitigation
strategies put forth that have allowed us to progress through the fall season
while also allowing teaching and learning to continue in schools,” said KSHSAA
Executive Director Bill Faflick.

To say the situation has been
unprecedented is an understatement. The only remote parallel is when the
Spanish Flu hit Kansas in 1918. History shows many high school games at the
time were canceled. Teams were lucky to get half of a football season
completed. In 2020, the cancellations began with state basketball after the
quarterfinal round and eventually led to canceling the spring season in its
entirety due to circumstances from the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Oct. 14, 98% of
teams participating in an activity this fall are actively competing or have
finished their season.

With the uncertainty of the year
ahead, the KSHSAA Board of Directors approved a plan on Aug. 28 to provide an
opportunity for those schools who would wish to compete in the “<a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/PDF/BODSupportMaterials82820.pdf">alternative fall</a>.” With all the deadlines in the
rearview, the five schools in the Kansas City-Kansas School District have
signed up for an alternative fall season.

With Girls State Tennis and <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Golf/StateGirlsTournaments.cfm">Girls State Golf</a> (Oct. 19-20) to take place within
the week, the KSHSAA plans to provide championships for all its fall
activities. Modifications have been made to adhere to local health regulations
and help mitigate risk at all upcoming events: <a href="http://kshsaa.org/public/covid/pdf/fallpostseasonmodifications.pdf">Postseason Modifications</a>.

The KSHSAA has set spectator
attendance at 50% seating capacity for its ticketed events this fall. The
KSHSAA is working with host schools to ensure parents of participants are

Fan/Huddle Tickets</a>
or by securing a voucher for entry upon arrival, paying at the gate. The only
exception to the above will be for <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/CrossCountry/State.cfm">State Cross Country</a> (Oct. 31). Attendance will be
limited to an allotment given to qualifying schools. Masks will be required for
all spectators at KSHSAA events.

With limited attendance expected at

TOPEKA, Kan - When the champions are handed the
KSHSAA State Trophy Saturday, Oct. 17 at the <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Tennis/StateGirls.cfm">Girls State Tennis Tournament</a>, it will be the first since the
final ball knocked down pins in Wichita at state bowling, March 6th. Two
hundred twenty-five days separate the two achievements.The 2020-21 postseason is upon us and
the KSHSAA could not be more excited to see students competing for the
culminating prize at the end of their season. However, the real accomplishment
has come in the ability to participate.“We are very proud of the students,
coaches and administrators who have faithfully adhered to the mitigation
strategies put forth that have allowed us to progress through the fall season
while also allowing teaching and learning to continue in schools,” said KSHSAA
Executive Director Bill Faflick.To say the situation has been
unprecedented is an understatement. The only remote parallel is when the
Spanish Flu hit Kansas in 1918. History shows many high school games at the
time were canceled. Teams were lucky to get half of a football season
completed. In 2020, the cancellations began with state basketball after the
quarterfinal round and eventually led to canceling the spring season in its
entirety due to circumstances from the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Oct. 14, 98% of
teams participating in an activity this fall are actively competing or have
finished their season.With the uncertainty of the year
ahead, the KSHSAA Board of Directors approved a plan on Aug. 28 to provide an
opportunity for those schools who would wish to compete in the “<a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/PDF/BODSupportMaterials82820.pdf">alternative fall</a>.” With all the deadlines in the
rearview, the five schools in the Kansas City-Kansas School District have
signed up for an alternative fall season.With Girls State Tennis and <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Golf/StateGirlsTournaments.cfm">Girls State Golf</a> (Oct. 19-20) to take place within
the week, the KSHSAA plans to provide championships for all its fall
activities. Modifications have been made to adhere to local health regulations
and help mitigate risk at all upcoming events: <a href="http://kshsaa.org/public/covid/pdf/fallpostseasonmodifications.pdf">Postseason Modifications</a>.The KSHSAA has set spectator
attendance at 50% seating capacity for its ticketed events this fall. The
KSHSAA is working with host schools to ensure parents of participants are
admitted into the game, whether that be through digital tickets using <a href="https://gofan.co/">Go
Fan/Huddle Tickets</a>
or by securing a voucher for entry upon arrival, paying at the gate. The only
exception to the above will be for <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/CrossCountry/State.cfm">State Cross Country</a> (Oct. 31). Attendance will be
limited to an allotment given to qualifying schools. Masks will be required for
all spectators at KSHSAA events. With limited attendance expected at
the final locations for each event, the <a href="https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/">NFHS Network</a>
will provide live broadcasts of the following:

KSHSAA State Championships return

HAYS – After missing the MIAA Tournament for the first time
under head coach Mark Johnson, the Fort Hays State men’s basketball team has a
youth movement as they try to return to their former glory.

Four true-freshmen, two redshirt-freshmen and a
redshirt-sophomore were on the court Tuesday as the Tigers held their first
official practice for the 2020-21 season.

“We’re an awfully young team” said Mark Johnson, who begins his
20th season as the Tigers head coach. “One of the biggest things they’ve got to
figure out is how hard you have to play to win at the college level.”

The Tiger coaching staff is excited about the four true
freshmen which includes point guard Quinten Rock from Smoky Hill High School in
Aurora, Colo., Traejon Davis from Oklahoma City, Haggan Hilgendorf out of
Hastings, Neb. and Elijah Nnanabu who will redshirt this season.

“I think they’ve done a pretty good job of figuring things
out, the x’s and o’s of what we’re doing” Johnson added. “We’re still working
on the consistent effort, intensity, focus and physicality day after day. We’re
better today than we were in preseason but to continue to make strides in those
departments.”

The four true-freshmen are joined by redshirt freshmen Kaleb
Hammeke who was a two-time all-state selection at Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic
High School and Devin Walker from Ulysses who missed most of last season after
an injury in the preseason.

Gabe Pieschl redshirted last season after transferring to
FHSU following one season at Cloud County CC where he averaged 5.1 points and
2.1 rebounds as a freshman.

Senior Jared Vitztum will look to build off a solid junior
season in which he led the Tigers at 17.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game and
was named to the All-MIAA Third Team. Vitztum reached double-figures in 22 of
their 28 games and shot 51-percent from 3-point range.

He’s joined by fellow seniors Alvin Thompson and Jackson Miller.
Thompson played in all but one game last season and averaged 6.0 points per
game off the bench in his first season after transferring from Cloud County CC.

Miller will be looking to play a bigger role after playing
in 17 games and averaging 1.8 points and 1.2 rebounds following two years at
Coffeyville CC.

Nyjee Wright is joined by junior college transfer Jordan Pumphrey
as the only juniors on the team.

Wright made starts in 27 of the Tigers 28 games last season
and was second on the team in scoring at 10.0 points per game and led the team
with 2.5 assists per game. The former Derby standout will miss the first
semester games as he recovers from off-season surgery.

Pumphrey averaged 18.4 points per game as a freshman and 16.0
as a sophomore at Cerro Cosa CC in California.

Gilbert Peters and Bjarni Jonsson round out the sophomore
class. Peters played in 25 games making one start as a redshirt freshman last
season. He averaged 3.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while Jonsson appeared
in 16 games.

The Tigers are scheduled to begin their season at home against Washburn on Wednesday, November 19.

Emporia State, Missouri Southern, Missouri Western, Newman, and Pittsburg State were all MIAA member institutions selected as an NCAA Division II Regional Championship site or a National Championship site. Five MIAA members selected to host NCAA championships

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas Athletics announced today that due to the unique and difficult challenges COVID-19 has brought to the 2020-21 men’s basketball season, an agreement has been made to delay the upcoming six-game series vs. Missouri by one season. This year’s contest previously scheduled at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City for Dec. 12 will now take place during the 2026-27 season.

“When the NCAA moved the start of the basketball season from November 10th&nbsp;to November 25th, like everyone else, we went to work on creating a new schedule,” said Director of Athletics Jeff Long. “With the Big 12 conference games also being adjusted, and the likelihood of only 10-20% of fans permitted to attend the game due to the pandemic, it became clear that we should delay the series. We appreciate Missouri agreeing to the delay and we look forward to renewing the Border Showdown at Allen Fieldhouse on December 11, 2021 with a sellout crowd.”

Each school will host two of the first four Border Showdown games starting with Dec. 11, 2021, in Allen Fieldhouse. KU will also host MU in the 2023-24 season, while Missouri will host in 2022-23 and 2024-25. The final two rivalry meetings will be played at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., during 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

“I was excited about beginning this series with Missouri again on December 12th, however, it is in the best interest of both of our schools and especially our fans to push this back a year,” said Head Coach Bill Self. “This rivalry goes back a long way, and we want our fans to be able to witness it again in-person. So, delaying it a year was an easy decision.”

Until 2012, the Border Showdown was known as the longest continuous rivalry west of the Mississippi River.

🥎 FHSU holds Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage

WICHITA - For a 15th-consecutive year, the Hays High girls' golf team is headed to the state tournament.

The Indians advanced with a second-place finish at Monday’s Class 5A regional at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita.

Hays High shot a 365 and finished 21 back of Kapaun Mt. Carmel who won the team title with a 344.

Katie Dinkel led the Indians with an 87 to finish eighth and was the only HHS golfer to medal.&nbsp;Taleia McCrae was 13th with a 92, Sophia Garrison was 14th with a 93, Sierra Smith was 17th with a 94 and Abbie Norris was 18th with a 95.

The Class 5A state tournament will be played at Salina Municipal Golf Course next Monday and Tuesday.

⛳ HHS girls qualify for state

COLBY - The TMP-Marian girls' golf team was short-handed for their 3-2-1A Regional at Colby's Meadow Lake Golf Course. The Monarchs had only three golfers able to play with the resto of the team in quarantine, and two of the three qualify for state.

Allison Applequist and Amelia Herrman both earned spots at state. Applequist finished ninth with a 98 and Herrman 17th with a 110.

Plainville's Corbyn Marquess shot a 92 and finished in second place, eight shots back of Colby's Anna Starbuck.

All three advance to the 3-2-1A State Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs should have felt good about the state of their defense heading into Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. They had held every opponent to 20 points or fewer and were getting back defensive tackle Chris Jones from an injury and cornerback Bashaud Breeland from a suspension.

They proceeded to give up 490 yards of total offense, allowed Derek Carr to throw three touchdowns passes — including a 72-yarder and a 59-yarder — and couldn’t stop the Raiders and force a punt in the final minutes of a 40-32 defeat.

The very simple question facing the Chiefs on Monday: What went wrong?

“We just didn’t finish the right way,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “In the run game, even in the pass game, we didn’t finish how we normally would. Even when we get in certain zone coverages, we didn’t match them as well as we’ve done in the past. We’ll grow from it, we’ll learn from it, but hats off to them. They made the plays that counted.”

The Chiefs (4-1) had every opportunity to extend their franchise-record 13-game winning streak another week.

Despite allowing those three TD passes in the second quarter, the Chiefs were still tied 24-24 at halftime, and they managed to hold Las Vegas in check during a scoreless third quarter. But with their offense continuously misfiring, the defense finally gave up a pair of touchdown runs to Josh Jacobs and Daniel Carlson’s field goal over the final 15 minutes.

And when Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a TD and 2-point conversion down the stretch, their defense allowed Jacobs to rumble for a first down and Carr to sneak for another to clinch the Raiders’ first win at Arrowhead Stadium since 2012.

“They had a heck of a game plan,” Jones said. “They came out with some formation we hadn’t seen on film and started to throw shots, especially out of the gun. They caught us off-guard a little bit. As a D-line, we harp on making sacks, affecting the quarterback, and we didn’t execute. We have to do a better job.”

The offense may have struggled in the third quarter, but it still showed how dynamic it can be in marching 75 yards in 1:29 for a fourth-quarter touchdown that gave them a chance. Eight players caught passes, Clyde Edwards-Helaire averaged a respectable 4 yards per carry and Mahomes still finished with 340 yards passing and two TDs.

Mahomes and the offense did all that despite a line that couldn’t stop the Las Vegas defensive front, even though the Raiders almost never rushed more than four. Mahomes has shredded defenses that have tried to blitz him into mistakes, but the Raiders got enough pressure out of their base defense that it took much of the pressure off their secondary.

The Chiefs made a concerted effort to get Tyreek Hill more involved in the game plan. He had three catches for 78 yards and three carries for 15 yards and a score. He also caught a 58-yard TD pass that was wiped out by a holding penalty and nearly had a 72-yard touchdown catch — a questionable no-call on pass interference caused him to drop it.

Everybody in the trenches had a rough day. The offensive line couldn’t handle the Las Vegas defensive front, and their Chiefs counterparts barely touched Carr all afternoon. The KC defensive line also couldn’t contain Jacobs and the Raiders’ other running backs in the fourth quarter, when the outcome was still hanging in the balance.

Guard Kelechi Osemele, who already was replacing the opted-out Laurence Duvernay-Tardif, will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his right knee. Middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens spent much of the game in and out of the lineup because of a hand injury, and wide receiver Sammy Watkins left with a hamstring injury.

539 — Tight end Travis Kelce had eight catches for 108 yards and a score, giving him 539 catches for his career and moving him past Dwayne Bowe for the second most in Chiefs history. Tony Gonzalez had 916 catches from 1997 to 2008.

K-State now has six Big 12 weekly honors this season as&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;(offensive),&nbsp;Jahron McPherson&nbsp;(defensive) and&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;(newcomer) picked up accolades after the Oklahoma game, while Vaughn was also the newcomer of the week following the Texas Tech contest. K-State is the first program since 2016 to have three-straight Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.

Parker, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, carded five tackles and had a 37-yard interception return touchdown in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. Parker’s pick six was the first of his career and the first by a Wildcat since Duke Shelley returned an interception 25 yards for a score at Texas Tech in 2017. Parker now has six career interceptions, which is tied for 14th&nbsp;nationally among active players.

Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his throwing shoulder, leaving freshman Will Howard to lead the No. 22 Wildcats the rest of the way.

Thompson was hurt two weeks ago when Texas Tech’s Rico Jeffers drove him into the ground after Thompson unloaded a pass in the Wildcats’ 31-21 victory. The Red Raiders were penalized 15 yards and Jeffers was ejected for the late hit.

“He had surgery last week on an upper-body injury, so unfortunately his season is over with,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said during the Big 12 teleconference on Monday. “But we are going to rally around Will Howard and Nick Ast.”

Thompson is a senior, but the NCAA has frozen eligibility clocks for the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which means he could return for one more season. It’s unclear whether that decision has been made.

Howard took over against Texas Tech for Thompson, who watched the rest of the game with his arm in a sling, and then made his first career start Saturday at TCU. Howard ripped off an 80-yard run in the first quarter to set up a field goal, and he finished with 117 yards passing and an interception and 86 yards rushing in the 21-14 victory.

“Brought a freshman quarterback into a tough environment and against a great defensive coach,” Klieman said. “I thought Will did a great job and managed the game exceptionally well and did enough for us to be successful.”

While the defense ultimately made the biggest plays in the game, including A.J. Parker’s interception return for a score, Howard and the offense avoided any major mistakes that could have given TCU a chance down the stretch.

The win kept the Wildcats (3-1, 3-0) in first place in the Big 12 heading into their week off. They play Kansas on Oct. 24.
