🏀TMP-M Monarchs split with Abilene

ABILENE – The TMP-Marian Monarch girls ran their win streak to 10 game in-a-row while the boys saw their nine-streak come to an end Friday in Abilene.

Girls: TMP 56, Abilene 26
After trailing 1-0 to open the game the Monarchs rushed out to a 20-4 run to end the first quarter as they built a 15-point lead.

TMP’s Sophia Balthazor scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter. Emilee Lane added six of her 10 points in the quarter as well.

After leading 20-5 to open the second quarter TMP (11-2, 5-0) extended their lead to 17 at 25-8.

Abilene briefly trimmed the lead to 11 at 25-14 before the Monarchs finished the first half on a seven to two run taking a 32-16 lead into the halftime break.

The Monarchs outscored Abilene 22-4 in the third quarter taking a 30-point lead into the fourth quarter at 54-20.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP secured the 56-26 victory.

Balthazor led three players in double-figures with a game-high 18 points. Jaci VonLintel added 12 points and nine rebounds and Emilee Lane chipped in 10 points.

Boys: Abilene 47, TMP 43
The Abilene Cowboys outscored TMP by four in the fourth quarter as they rallied for a 47-43 win over the Monarchs ending their nine-game win streak.

TMP got out to an early 3-2 lead before the Cowboys used a 7-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Monarchs were able to tie the game at nine but Abilene closed the first quarter and opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 20-11 lead early in the second quarter.

With the Monarchs down 10 at 23-13 they closed out the first half on a 17-6 run capped off by back-to-back Kenton Ginther three pointers giving them a 28-26 halftime lead.

Offense was hard to come by in the third quarter with Abilene outscoring TMP 8-5.

Abilene used a pair of free throws to take a 31-30 lead. A lead they would never give up.

Three times in the fourth quarter TMP closed within one point but could get no closed in a 47-43 loss.

Gavin Unrein and Dylan Werth each scored 10 points for TMP and Kenton Ginther added nine on three pointers.

The Monarchs will return to MCL play Tuesday at WaKeeney against the Trego Golden Eagles.
