HAYS – The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams earned a doubleheader sweep of the Sacred Heart Knights Thursday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.
Girls: TMP 67, Sacred Heart 48
The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 25-2 run
and then held off a late Lady Knights rally on their way to a 67-48 win.
TMP’s Emilee Lane scored 11 of her career-high 28 points in the first quarter as the Monarchs (10-2, 5-0 MCL) built a 25-2 lead after the first quarter.
After TMP took a 27 point lead at 29-2 to open the second quarter, Sacred Heart (4-7)answered with an 11-2 run cutting the TMP lead to 31-13.
The Monarchs closed the first half on a 13-0 run and led 44-14 at the halftime break.
TMP was able to build a 55-23 third quarter lead before Sacred Heart began to chip away at the Monarchs lead.
The Knights closed the third quarter and opened the fourth quarter on a 24-4 run cutting the TMP lead down to just 12 points at 59-47.
The Monarchs were able to hold on for the 67-48 victory.
Emilee Lane led all scorers with 28 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Jaci VonLintel added 13 points and Sophia Balthazor finished with 11.
Boys: TMP 53, Sacred Heart 42
The TMP boys rushed out to an early double-digit lead and
then held on for a 53-42 win over the Knights.
TMP’s Gavin Unrein scored a layup right off the jump ball and sparked a 13-3 run for TMP (9-2, 4-0 MCL) to open the game.
Unrein and Kade Harris combined to score the first 10 point of the game for TMP before Andrew Schwartz gave TMP the 10-point lead on his only three-pointer of the game.
After leading 15-7 after one quarter the Monarchs took their largest lead of the game at 13 with a 20-7 lead.
Sacred Heart (9-2) briefly cut the lead to eight before TMP was able to take a 25-14 lead into the halftime break.
The Monarchs led by 12 in the third quarter before the Knights closed the quarter on a 7-0 run.
Unrein hit back-to-back three pointers to open the third quarter that ended the Knights run.
Sacred Heart closed within five late in the fourth quarter but Harris and Unrein combined to make 11-of-14 down the stretch to secure the 53-42 win.
Unrein led TMP with 17 points. Harris added 13 and Dylan Werth finished with 11.
The Monarchs travel to Abilene Friday.
