⚽ HHS lands six on All-WAC team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Whit Merrifield capped a nine-run first inning with a three-run homer and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 14-5 Friday night for their fifth straight win.

Merrifield started the big burst with a leadoff single and his home run ended the evening for Matt Shoemaker (2-7). He retired just one batter, allowing six hits and two walks.

Kansas City made it 13-0 in the second. All nine Royals in batting order had already scored with no outs in the inning.

Michael A. Taylor drove in three runs for the Royals.

Brad Keller (6-4) got his third straight win and hasn't allowed more than three runs in an outing since April. He went five innings, giving up two earned runs.

Jorge Polanco hit his sixth home run of the season into the right field fountains in the Twins fifth. Miguel Sano broke an 0-for-24 with a two-run drive and Nick Gordon hit his first career home run.

Taylor and Salvador Perez had two RBIs apiece in the first inning while Andrew Benintendi and Nicky Lopez each had one.

Carlos Santana added a two-run single in the second.

Kansas City has scored at least five runs in its last seven games.

Minnesota: Kenta Maeda (groin) completed a 20-pitch bullpen session and is scheduled to throw another on Sunday.

The Twins send Jose Berrios (5-2, 3.36) to the mound to face Mike Minor (4-2, 4.65) on Saturday afternoon.

The Tiger Tennis class of 2021 includes Gracen Friess, Heidi Lubbers and Hope Lubbers. Gracen Friess heads to Hays after a decorated high school career at Parsons (Kan.) High School. Friess is a three-time Class 4A state qualifier in singles action, including a pair of state placements. She won the Southeastern Kansas League title as a junior and senior while also winning the regional title both years. Friess placed 12th at state as a sophomore in 2018 before finishing 11th as a junior in 2019. A four-time letterwinner, she compiled a singles record of 79-17 over her last three years of high school, including a 25-5 mark as a senior in 2020, a 28-7 record as a junior in 2019 and a 26-5 record as a sophomore in 2018. Friess also qualified for the state championships in track and field, doing so in the hurdles races in addition to multiple relay races. Heidi and Hope Lubbers signed with the Tigers after impressive careers at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Wichita. The pair medaled at the Class 5A State Championships twice, finishing as the state runner-up in 2020 after placing fourth in 2019. Their run to the state title match in 2020 helped the Golden Eagles win the 5A state championship as a team. Each a four-time letterwinner in tennis, the sisters compiled a record of 58-25 in doubles action over their last three seasons at BCCHS, including a record of 22-9 as seniors in 2020 and a mark of 23-10 as juniors in 2019. They are both two-time selections on the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association All-State Tennis team, earning the honor in 2019 and 2020. Fireworks show scheduled after Larks home opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andrew Benintendi hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 10-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Salvador Perez had two homers and three RBIs to help the Royals sweep the two-game series. Brady Singer (3-4) allowed five runs — four earned — and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Wil Crowe (0-4) took the loss. He gave up eight runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.

“What a show,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said after his team’s offensive outburst. “The top-of-the-order hitters gave the opportunities for Beni and what a sweet swing that was."

“It was great to see a lot of different guys make things happen.”

Adam Frazier, who led the National League with 40 hits in May, doubled twice for Pittsburgh.

Benintendi drove in Kansas City’s first run with a single in the first inning.

The Pirates scored three times in the third. Singer loaded the bases with no outs on an infield single, a walk and a hit batter. An RBI single by Bryan Reynolds and sacrifice flies by Gregory Polanco and Ben Gamel knocked in the next two runs.

Kevin Newman singled and raced home when Michael Perez sent one to the wall in right-center for a double to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead in the fourth.

Singer was not thrilled with his outing, but he wasn’t worried about his club’s ability to come back.

“I struggled with a little bit of my control there,” he said. “It wasn’t terrible, but up in the zone a lot. But the whole lineup was incredible. It was really good to see those guys do that.”

“I was just looking for a pitch to drive to the outfield,” Benintendi said.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton was second-guessing the decision to leave Crowe in to face Benintendi.

“We didn’t execute a pitch,” Shelton said. “We tried to go up and away with a fastball, and he threw a fastball down and in. In retrospect, we probably should have made a move.”

Pirates: Shelton said 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (left wrist strain) is likely to return to the roster Thursday against Miami. Hayes has been out of the lineup since April 4.

Hays High had six players named to the All-Western Athletic Conference baseball team led by junior Dylan Dreiling who was the WAC Player of the Year. He's joined on the first team by fellow juniors Dalton Dale and Garrett Wellbrock and senior Dominic Bainter. Seniors Dawson VonFeldt and Ben Krannawitter were named to the second team.

Dreiling broke the HHS school record with a 0.52 earned run average and tied the HHS record for wins in a season (9) and strikeouts in a game (18). He also moved into the top-10 in program history for hits in a season.

Dreiling and Dale were also named to the first team of the KBCA 5A All-State team. Bainter was named to the second team.

After finishing 21-1 and earning a third-place finish at the
2-1A state baseball tournament last week, the Ellis Railroaders had four players
named to the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches All-State Team.

Tegan Cain was named Player of the Year in 2-1A and was
named to the first-team as a pitcher. 

Cain finished his senior campaign with a record of 9-0 and
an ERA of 0.30. In his 52.2 innings pitch he struck out 109 and allowed just five
runs, two of them earned, on 11 hits with 16 walks.

Tyson Jimenez was named to the second-team as a pitch and
was joined on the team by designated hitter Jaryn Wildeman and Easton Burton.
Burton was honored as a utility player.

Jimenez finished the year 8-2 with a 1.99 ERA.

Ellis coach Brent Cain was also named the 2-1A Coach of the
Year.

KABC Allstar game June 9th at Hoglund Park in Lawrence.

⚾Indians land three on KABC All-State team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Adalberto Mondesi hit a two-run homer before injuring his hamstring, Mike Minor pitched six solid innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3. 

The Royals have won 10 of 16 to get back to .500 for the first time since an 11-game losing streak dropped them four games below. 

Minor allowed two runs and five hits. He struck out seven and walked one. 

Chad Kuhl took the loss in his return from the injured list. He gave up three runs and six hits in four innings.

The Tigers finished the week with 15 All-American honors across nine events. The men's team finished 17th in the team race with 15 points, while the women placed 46th with three team points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;won the national title in the pole vault after clearing a school-record 17-2.75 not once, but twice. Now a four-time All-American, Stanley made quick work of the first two bars, clearing both 15-11 and 16-4.75 on his first attempt. After one miss he made it over the 16-8.75 bar on his second attempt, joining six individuals as the bar went up to 17-0.75. After seeing four competitors make it over, Stanley joined the group by eclipsing that bar on his third and final attempt. Down to his third attempt again at 17-2.75, the redshirt-sophomore safely made it over the bar and back down to the mat, breaking his previous school record of 17-2.25 in the process. Stanley and Trivett Jones of Angelo State were the only two athletes to make it over the 17-2.75 bar, while Central Missouri's Vincent Hobbie cleared the 17-0.75 bar and chose to pass at 17-2.75. No one was able to safely clear the bar at 17-4.5, sending Stanley and Jones into a jump-off while Hobbie finished in a tie for third. The pair both made one more unsuccessful attempt at 17-4.5 before the bar was lowered once again to 17-2.75. Jones went first and failed to clear the bar, setting the stage for Stanley. The Bennington, Kan. native once again cleared the bar, securing the 24th outdoor national championship for Fort Hays State and the ninth during the NCAA DII era. 🏃 2-1A state track results

GREAT BEND – The Ellis Railroaders baseball team earned their second top
three state finish in four years Friday with a third place finish at the 2-1A
state baseball tournament in Great Bend.

In just the programs second ever state semifinals appearance
the Railroaders fell 3-0 to Valley Falls in their first game Friday but they bounced back to win the third-place
game 14-4 over Spearville.

In the third-place game Ellis scored in four of five innings
and cruised to the win in five innings.

Ellis opened the game with five runs in the bottom of the first
inning.

After three straight singles to load the bases, Easton
Burton walked with the bases loaded to put Ellis up 1-0. Two batters later, George Crawford walked with the bases loaded making
it 2-0.

Ellis added runs on a fielder’s choice and error before Sam
Honas made it 5-0 with an RBI single.

The Railers made it 6-0 with a run scored on a wild pitch and
7-0 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning.

Spearville got a pair of runs back in the top of the third
inning to make it 7-2 Ellis.

Ellis scored six more runs in the bottom of the fourth
inning.

They scored on a pair of RBI singles, a pair of errors, a
bases loaded hit by pitch and a ground out to making 13-2 Ellis through
four innings.

Spearville two more in the top of the fifth before Ellis
plated a run on an error in the bottom of the inning giving the Railers the
14-4 run-rule victory.

Seven of the nine Railers in the lineup drove in a run with
George Crawford driving in a pair of runs.

Tegan Cain was three-for-three and scored four times. Konnor

GREAT BEND – The Ellis Railroaders baseball team earned their second top
three state finish in four years Friday with a third place finish at the 2-1A
state baseball tournament in Great Bend.In just the programs second ever state semifinals appearance
the Railroaders fell 3-0 to Valley Falls in their first game Friday but they bounced back to win the third-place
game 14-4 over Spearville.In the third-place game Ellis scored in four of five innings
and cruised to the win in five innings.Ellis opened the game with five runs in the bottom of the first
inning.After three straight singles to load the bases, Easton
Burton walked with the bases loaded to put Ellis up 1-0. Two batters later, George Crawford walked with the bases loaded making
it 2-0.Ellis added runs on a fielder’s choice and error before Sam
Honas made it 5-0 with an RBI single.The Railers made it 6-0 with a run scored on a wild pitch and
7-0 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning.Spearville got a pair of runs back in the top of the third
inning to make it 7-2 Ellis.Ellis scored six more runs in the bottom of the fourth
inning.They scored on a pair of RBI singles, a pair of errors, a
bases loaded hit by pitch and a ground out to making 13-2 Ellis through
four innings.Spearville two more in the top of the fifth before Ellis
plated a run on an error in the bottom of the inning giving the Railers the
14-4 run-rule victory.Seven of the nine Railers in the lineup drove in a run with
George Crawford driving in a pair of runs.Tegan Cain was three-for-three and scored four times. Konnor
Pfeifer triple and scored three times.Easton Burton earned the win for Ellis.Burton allowed four runs, two earned in five innings with a
