The MIAA now has five teams listed as under consideration, including FHSU, UCO, Central Missouri, Nebraska-Kearney and Emporia State. 🏃Track and Field in National Top 25 Entering Conference Championships

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a career filled with remarkable comebacks, Tiger Woods faces perhaps his toughest recovery of all.

The golf star was driving alone on a sweeping, downhill stretch of road through coastal Los Angeles suburbs when his SUV struck a raised median, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times. The crash caused “significant” injuries to Woods’ right leg, and he underwent what was described as a “long surgical procedure” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer, said Woods shattered bones in his lower leg in multiple places. Some of his fractures went through the skin and were stabilized by a rod, while screws and pins were used for his ankle and foot injuries.

A statement on Woods’&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TigerWoods/status/1364447580520738820" target="_blank">Twitter account</a>&nbsp;said he was awake and recovering.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was the first to arrive after a neighbor called 911.

Police said there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday on a Facebook livestream that it was “purely an accident” on a downhill section of road known for crashes.

Dr. Joseph Patterson, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, said injuries like Woods’ are among the most common seen in emergency rooms.

Patterson didn’t treat Woods and wouldn’t comment specifically about the golfer’s injuries but said the risk of infection is extremely high for patients with fractures that break the skin.

“Tissue can be exposed to bacteria, dirt and clothing. The outcomes can be a lot worse if that tissue gets infected,” Patterson said. Such open fractures can require multiple surgeries to repair.

Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith suffered an open fracture to his lower leg while being tackled. He nearly lost the leg due to infection but made a remarkable recovery and played last season.

The crash was the latest setback for Woods, who at times has looked unstoppable with his 15 major championships and record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the world’s most recognizable sports figures, and at 45, with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.

He won the 2008 U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures in his left leg. His personal life imploded on Thanksgiving weekend in 2009 when he was caught having multiple extramarital affairs and crashed his vehicle near his Florida home. He returned to win his 11th award as PGA Tour player of the year and reach No. 1.

And then after four back surgeries that kept him out of golf for the better part of two years, he won the Masters in April 2019 for the fifth time, a victory that ranks among the great comebacks in the sport.

Now it’s no longer a matter of when he plays again — the Masters is seven weeks away — but if he plays again.

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Monday and Tuesday had been set aside for Woods to give golf tips to celebrities on Discovery-owned GOLFTV. A tweet Monday showed him in a cart with comedian David Spade. He also worked with NBA great Dwyane Wade, who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLo-cCgH0H1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" target="_blank">posted a video</a>&nbsp;on Instagram.

“It was a great day,” Wade said Tuesday night on Turner Sports, where he is a studio analyst. “And I woke up today so proud to be able to post that moment for the world, like a little snippet of our moment together. And I took a nap, and I woke up to the news. So, you know, just like everybody out there, my thoughts and prayers are all to his loved ones.”

They have come from everywhere — Jack Nicklaus and Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson and former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Woods played golf with both presidents, and Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.

Woods had a fifth back surgery, a microdiscectomy, on Dec. 23, just three days after he played the PNC Championship with his son Charlie, who now is 12. Woods also has a 13-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Woods was driving his courtesy vehicle from the Genesis Invitational when he crashed. Gonzalez, the deputy, does traffic enforcement on the road and said he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph (129 kph) in the downhill, 45-mph zone. Crashes are common.

Police said Woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out. The sheriff says the airbags deployed and the inside of the SUV stayed mostly intact, which “gave him a cushion to survive the crash.”

Villanueva said Wednesday that the department hasn’t yet pulled information from the vehicle’s event data recorder, or “black box,” which would give details about speed and could be a factor.

In 2017, Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of a car parked awkwardly on the side of the road. He was arrested on a DUI charge and said he had an unexpected reaction to prescription medicine for his back pain. Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and checked into a clinic to get help with prescription medication and a sleep disorder.

Woods hasn’t won since the Zozo Championship in Japan in fall 2019, and he’s reduced his playing schedule in recent years because of injuries. Besides his five back surgeries, he’s had four surgeries on his left knee.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, the deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who was the first on the scene after a neighbor called 911.

“As if his body hasn’t endured enough,” Jon Rahm, the No. 2 player in the world, said from the Workday Championship in Florida. “I just hope he can get out of the hospital after recovery and he can still play with his kids and have a normal life.”

The single-car crash was the latest setback for Woods, who at times has looked unstoppable on the golf course with his 15 major championships and record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the most recognizable sports figures in the world, and at 45 with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.

He won the 2008 U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures in his left leg. His personal life imploded on Thanksgiving weekend in 2009 when he was caught having multiple extramarital affairs, and he returned to win his 11th award as PGA Tour player of the year and reach No. 1.

No charges were filed, and police said there was no evidence he was impaired.

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Monday and Tuesday had been set aside for Discovery-owned GOLFTV for Woods to give playing tips to celebrities. A tweet Monday showed him in a cart at Rolling Hills Country Club with comedian David Spade. He also worked with NBA great Dwyane Wade, who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLo-cCgH0H1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" target="_blank">posted a video</a>&nbsp;to his Instagram account.

Woods was headed to Rolling Hills on Tuesday when the accident happened.

Thoughts and prayers have come from everywhere — Jack Nicklaus and Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, and former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Woods played golf with both of them, and Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 after perhaps his great triumph — the Masters after he had gone through four back surgeries.

The news put a damper on the World Golf Championship in Florida, where Woods was eligible to play if healthy.

“I’m sick to my stomach,” said Justin Thomas, No. 3 in the world and among the younger players whom Woods has embraced. “It hurts to see one of my closest friends get in an accident. Man, I just hope he’s all right.”

The crash happened about 7:15 a.m. as he drove his courtesy vehicle from the Genesis Invitational through the upscale suburbs. Gonzalez says he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph (129 kph) in the 45 mph zone and crashes are common.

Police said Woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the airbags deployed and the inside of the SUV stayed mostly intact, which “gave him a cushion to survive the crash.”

Authorities said they checked for any odor of alcohol or other signs he was under the influence of a substance and found none. They didn’t say how fast he was driving.

This is the third time Woods has been involved in a car investigation. The most notorious was the early morning after Thanksgiving in 2009, when his SUV ran over a fire hydrant and hit a tree. That was the start of shocking revelations that he had been cheating on his wife with multiple women.

In May 2017, Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of a car parked awkwardly on the side of the road. WASHINGTON&nbsp; (AP)—The latest federal bill related to college sports would allow athletes to earn money from endorsements, loosen restrictions around transfers and permit players to return to school after entering a professional league’s draft.

The proposed legislation introduced Wednesday by Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., also would require the wealthiest athletic programs to increase spending on long-term medical care for athletes.

“The Amateur Athletes Protection and Compensation Act would create a national standard of guidelines to make certain student athletes can benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness without hurting their eligibility to compete as a student athlete,” Moran said in a statement.

The bill is the fourth to emerge from the Senate since December and second from a Republican. Most recently, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., introduced a bill narrowly focused on giving college athletes the right to earn money off their names, images and likenesses.

In December, Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced the College Athlete Bill of Rights, a sweeping proposal that could undercut the NCAA’s ability to govern college sports if passed.

That came after Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, R-Miss., announced he was sponsoring a bill that opened the door for athletes to be compensated for endorsement and sponsorship deals but largely protected the NCAA’s ability to set its own rules.

Moran’s bill lands somewhere in between the College Athlete Bill of Rights and Wicker’s: broader in scope than the Republican’s, but not potentially disruptive to the status quo in college athletics as the Democrats’.

It would create an independent body to oversee NIL regulations and permit athletes to have agents and give athletes a lifetime undergraduate scholarship.

Moran’s proposal would also make it possible for athletes to enter professional drafts and not lose their college eligibility — as is currently the case — and push schools to cover medical expenses athletes incur after their college careers because of injuries suffered during college competition.

The NCAA was expected to pass new NIL rules in January, but that was put on hold after scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The NCAA is looking for help from Congress in the form of a federal NIL law that would usurp myriad potential state laws working their way through legislatures around the country. Florida’s NIL law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1.

Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced the College Athlete Bill of Rights, a sweeping proposal that could undercut the NCAA’s ability to govern college sports if passed.That came after Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, R-Miss., announced he was sponsoring a bill that opened the door for athletes to be compensated for endorsement and sponsorship deals but largely protected the NCAA’s ability to set its own rules.Moran’s bill lands somewhere in between the College Athlete Bill of Rights and Wicker’s: broader in scope than the Republican’s, but not potentially disruptive to the status quo in college athletics as the Democrats’.It would create an independent body to oversee NIL regulations and permit athletes to have agents and give athletes a lifetime undergraduate scholarship.Moran’s proposal would also make it possible for athletes to enter professional drafts and not lose their college eligibility — as is currently the case — and push schools to cover medical expenses athletes incur after their college careers because of injuries suffered during college competition.The NCAA was expected to pass new NIL rules in January, but that was put on hold after scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice.The NCAA is looking for help from Congress in the form of a federal NIL law that would usurp myriad potential state laws working their way through legislatures around the country. Florida’s NIL law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs earned a share of the Mid-Continent
League regular season title Tuesday as they picked up their seven straight win
while the TMP boys earned their eighth win in-a-row as they closed out the regular
season with a doubleheader sweep of Plainville.

The Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 16-4 run and never
trailed on their way to a 75-24 win over Plainville Tuesday at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse.

TMP (17-3, 10-1 MCL) jumped out to an early 5-2 lead taking
advantage of a Megan Hamel fast break layup and a Sophia Balthazor
three-pointer. 

After a pair of Plainville (2-18, 0-11 MCL) free throws cut the TMP lead to
one the Monarchs finished the first quarter on a 15-2 run to lead 20-6 through
one quarter of play.

It was much the same to start the second quarter as TMP
opened the quarter on a 22-1 run capped off three straight Balthazor
three-pointers to give TMP a 38-7 lead. TMP lead 47-13 at halftime.

Plainville scored the first two points of the second half
only to see TMP outscored Plainville 20-3 the rest of the quarter giving the
Monarchs a 67-18 lead through three quarters.

With the continuous clock in the fourth quarter TMP went on
to the 75-24 win.

Sophia Balthazor hit five three pointers and finished with a
career-high 20 points. Megan Hamel recorded a season-high 16 points and
Emilee Lane added 18 points. Kassidi Yost pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

TMP and Phillipsburg finish the second co-MCL regular season
champions.

The Panthers have clinched the top spot in next week’s 3A
sub-state in Norton. Both TMP and Goodland finished 17-3 so it will come down
to a tiebraker to determine who is the two and three-seeds. 

The TMP boys opened the game on an 8-0 and never trailed on
their way to a 64-30 win over Plainville Tuesday.

A Bryce Seib three-pointer and a Dylan Werth three-point
play helped TMP take an early 8-0 lead. 

Plainville briefly closed within three and four twice before
TMP finished the first quarter on a 6-2 run taking a 19-11 lead through the
first quarter.

Dylan Werth and Gavin Unrein combined to start the second
quarter on an 8-0 run take put TMP up 27-11. 

Schulte followed that with back-to-back three pointers to
put TMP up 33-16. With the second three-pointer Schulte her surpassed the 1,000-point
mark for his career.

The Cardinals closed within 13 points, at 35-22 to open the
third quarter but TMP answered with a 18-2 run giving the Monarchs a 53-24 lead
through three quarters.

TMP quickly build a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter and
with the running clock the Monarchs picked up the 64-30 lead.

Jackson Schulte lead all three scorers with 17 points. Kade
Harris matched his career-high of 11 points for the second straight game. Dylan
Werth finished with 10 points.

The Monarchs earned the top-seed in the Norton 3A sub-state
and will take on Beloit Tuesday.

🏀TMP girls earn share of MCL title; boys win eighth straight in rout of Plainville

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Courtney Ramey scored 15 points and made two free throws with a minute left in overtime to give Texas the lead as the 14th-ranked Longhorns earned a regular-season sweep of No. 17 Kansas with a 75-72 win Tuesday night.

Kansas had a chance to tie after Ramey’s free throws, but Jalen Wilson lost the ball driving for a layup. Kai Jones made one free throw for Texas (14-6, 8-5 Big 12) with 5 seconds left for the final margin.

Ochai Ogbajai scored 17 points for Kansas (17-8, 11-6), which had its five-game win streak snapped. The Jayhawks lost to Texas twice in the regular season for the first time since the Big 12 went to round-robin play in 2011-2012. Texas’ 25-point win at Kansas on Jan. 2 was the Jayhawks’ worst home loss under coach Bill Self.

“They have been the class of the league for a long, long time,” Texas coach Shaka Smart said. “It means a lot to win both games, but who knows, maybe we’ll play them again in the conference tournament.”

Several Texas seniors, who were playing their final home game, said they’ll cherish the victory.

“To be the first team to sweep Kansas, on senior night ... it means a lot being able to be part of history,” said senior Matt Coleman, who had 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Texas led for most of the final four minutes of regulation before David McCormack’s put-back layup with 6 seconds left sent the game to overtime at 66-66.

Kansas led by 14 points late in the first half and 11 at halftime before Texas rallied. The Jayhawks seized control early with a 19-2 run punctuated by two run-out dunks by Bryce Thompson.

Texas missed its first 12 3-point attempts but turned the game around when the long-range shots started connecting. Freshman Greg Brown made two 3s to start the second half, and a twisting layup by Andrew Jones quickly had the Longhorns back within six.

Two dunks from Kai Jones and a 3-pointer from Andrew Jones put Texas ahead 57-54 with 9:10 to play.

Christian Braun made a 3-pointer for Kansas to start overtime before Coleman hit a reverse layup and Andrew Jones turned a steal into a transition basket for the lead.

“In the first half we were flying around. We didn’t come out with that energy in the second,” Braun said.

Kansas: The Jayhawks still have the most Big 12 victories and are fighting for second place in the league behind their next opponent, No. 2 Baylor. Self lamented this week that not every Big 12 team will play each other twice, and said there are plenty of teams that would like a late-season shot at the undefeated Bears.

Texas: The Longhorns hit the road for four straight games to end their regular season under the newly revised scheduled released by the Big 12. The Longhorns keep their originally scheduled Saturday matchup at No. 18 Texas Tech, then finish with trips to Iowa State, No. 7 Oklahoma and TCU that were previously postponed.

“We’re going to be on the road and we showed a lot of fight to get this one,” senior Jericho Sims said. “We’re going to remember this when we’re all done with our career.”

Both teams gave little ground on defense in the closing minutes of regulation. The teams combined for just 11 points over the final seven minutes. Texas finished the game shooting 38%. Kansas was at 40%. Just as critical, the Jayhawks were 12 of 21 from the free throw line.

“Holding them to 23 in the second half and six in the overtime, that flat-out won us the game,” Smart said. “I’m really proud for the way our guys came together after Kansas’ phenomenal start.”

Kansas hosts Baylor on Saturday. Baylor won the first meeting 77-69.

The Sooners led by six with three minutes to play, before McGuirl took over. Those 3’s gave Kansas State a 3-point lead. Austin Reaves missed a 3 in the final seconds as the Wildcats (7-18, 3-13 Big 12) won their second straight and first at home in Big 12 play this season.

“I like to let it fly and I thought I was shooting well so I trusted myself,” McGuirl said. “The shots were able to fall and I just believed.”

Davion Bradford scored 13 points and DaJuan Gordon had 11 which helped Kansas State beat a top 10 opponent at home for the first time in three years - beating then No. 4 Oklahoma.

“I told our guys we want to be the top story on SportsCenter tonight,” Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. “If Mike is not, he’s got to be up there.”

The loss is the ninth straight in Manhattan for Oklahoma dating back to 2013, but just their first loss to a team with a losing record this season.

“This group has done a great job of taking care of business, but unfortunately it may take this loss to make us better,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “This conference is tough because if you don’t come to play every night, you’ll lose.”

Reaves scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half. De’Vion Harmon had 13 and Umoja Gibson had seven points and 11 rebounds (14-6, 9-5).

Late in the second half Reaves scored 10 straight points, but was the only Sooner to make a field goal in the final 10 minutes of the game. He sat the majority of the first half with two fouls - one was a technical.

Both teams shot 39% while Kansas State went 7 of 27 from 3 and the Sooners were 4 of 20.

Oklahoma: Other than Reaves, the Sooners went cold in the second half. This could be a major blow to postseason seedings.

Kansas State: This was the win that had been close for the Wildcats in the past two weeks. They are now 1-10 against top 25 teams this season.

Oklahoma hosts Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Kansas State travels to West Virginia on Saturday.

🏀 McGuirl’s big second half lifts Kansas State past Oklahoma

Hays High finished off four straight road games with a trip
to Dodge City on Tuesday night.

Dodge City used an 8-0 first quarter run to break a three
all tie with Hays. Re Green tied the game on a right wing three before the Red
Demons went on their run which grabbed an 11-3 lead. The Indians went scoreless
for just over six minutes before Morgan Engle hit a free throw in the final
seconds of the first quarter and an 11-4 deficit.

Dodge City pushed their advantage to nine at 13-4 on the
first possession of the second quarter but scored just two more points the
remainder of the quarter. Hays made two more three pointers and used them for a
8-2 run that pulled the halftime score to 15-12 in favor of Dodge City. 

Hays had three possessions to end the first half the three
to begin the second half down by three points but did not score on any of the six
chances. Dodge City then went on a 9-0 run to take command at 24-12.

The Indians trailed by double figures for most of the final
ten minutes of the game falling 42-24. Down fourteen Hays cut the deficit down
to ten with three minutes remaining but would not score any more.

With the win, Dodge City takes the Western Athletic
Conference crown. Their 7-0 mark in league play with one game remaining makes
it so that nobody can catch them. The Red Demons are 17-1 on the year. Hays
falls to 6-13 on the season and 1-6 in WAC play. Hays will be the four seed in next
week’s sub-state tournament.

A 10-2 and 9-0 run in the first half by Hays High was offset
by a Dodge City 13-1 run in the second quarter resulting in a tight three point
game at halftime. The Indians first run of 10-2 came when score was tied up at
four a piece. 

The Red Demons run came in the second quarter that resulted
in a 19-15 lead for Dodge City. The Indians scored just one point over a four
minute span in the second quarter before going on their own 9-0 run to take the
lead back. A Jace Linenberger basket hit a bucket with three seconds left in
the first half for a 28-25 lead at halftime.

Dodge City tied the game at 28 to open the second half. The
Indians erupted on a 13-2 run to take a 41-30 advantage and led 48-37 going to
the fourth quarter. Hays pushed their lead to a game high 15 at 52-38 when
Dodge City made one last run. An 11-3 run by the Red Demons brought the Hays lead
down to 55-49 with a little over two minutes remaining. Hays made six of their
final nine free throws to win 61-49.

Jace Linenberger and Dalyn Schwarz each unofficially recorded
double-doubles. Linenberger led all scoring with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Schwarz scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Carson Kieffer added 14 points
for the Western Athletic Conference champion Hays High Indians.

The Indians improve to 19-0 on the year and are 7-0 in league
play. Dodge City falls to 10-8 and 4-3. Hays will host Great Bend Friday to finish
conference play, the regular season and host senior night.

🏀 Hays boys win WAC Crown; girls fall to Dodge City

HAYS - Fort Hays State's chances at making the MIAA Tournament took a hit Tuesday. The Tigers were held to 18-percent three-point shooting and lost 78-73 to Missouri Western State in a makeup game at Gross Coliseum.

After a sluggish start by both teams, the Griffons (12-9, 12-9 MIAA) used an 11-2 run to build a 17-11 lead midway through the first half and would lead most of the way. MWSU built the lead to nine with a little over two minutes in the half before a 6-0 run by the Tigers closed the gap to 39-36 at halftime.

FHSU (11-10, 11-10 MIAA) scored the first four points of the second half on baskets from Bjarni Jonsson and Kaleb Hammeke to cap a 10-0 run and take a 40-39 lead but the Griffons quickly responded with a 9-2 run and never trailed again.

Nyjee Wright hit a pair of free throws with 38-seconds to play to pull the Tigers within one but Tyrell Carroll hit a pair of free throws on the next possession to push the lead to three.

Quinton Rock had a shot in the lane blocked by Caleb Bennett with 11 seconds to play then two free throws from Reese Glover put the game away for MWSU.

The Tigers shot 47-percent for the game but were held to 4-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Griffons, who entered the game as one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the MIAA, went 20-for-22 from the fould line while the Tigers were 17-of-24.

Jared Vitztum led the Tigers with his 12th double-double of the season scoring 20 points along with 10 rebounds. Jonsson scored a career-high 13, Rock 11 and Gilbert Peters 10.

Carroll led the Griffons with 25 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

The Tigers close out the regular season Saturday at No. 1 Northwest Missouri State.

Nelson posted a 1.83 ERA in three appearances at the Edmond Regional Festival, which included a complete game win over Southern Nazarene. Nelson received the winning decision in Fort Hays State's lone win of the weekend, allowing just one earned run in a 3-2 win over Southern Nazarene. She scattered five hits and walked two, while striking out four in the complete game effort. She took a tough-luck loss in 4.2 innings of relief against East Central, allowing just three hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.  🏀WATCH: TMP-Marian vs Plainville

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls once again this week, climbing to fifth in the WBCA Division II coaches poll while moving up five spots to seventh in the D2SIDA Media Poll, both released Tuesday (Feb. 23). The Tigers remain the top team in the MIAA after taking solo possession of first place in the league standings while FHSU is now the top-ranked team in the Central Region due to Minnesota Duluth's loss to St. Cloud State last week. Two other MIAA schools are listed in the top 25, with Nebraska-Kearney coming in 14th in the coaches poll and receiving votes in the media poll while Central Missouri is now 15th in both national polls. The Tigers have played 14 games as the fifth-ranked team in the country, second-most of any spot in the polls (18 games at No. 3). FHSU is 11-3 all-time when ranked fifth in the coaches poll, including a 2-2 record as the fifth-ranked team last season. With a one game cushion in the league standings and two games to play, the Tigers need just one win this week to secure at least a share of the regular season conference title. Fort Hays State will look to secure that victory Thursday (Feb. 25) when the Tigers hit the road to face off with Missouri Western beginning at 5:30 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo.

 </figure>The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls once again this week, climbing to fifth in the WBCA Division II coaches poll while moving up five spots to seventh in the D2SIDA Media Poll, both released Tuesday (Feb. 23). The Tigers remain the top team in the MIAA after taking solo possession of first place in the league standings while FHSU is now the top-ranked team in the Central Region due to Minnesota Duluth's loss to St. Cloud State last week. Two other MIAA schools are listed in the top 25, with Nebraska-Kearney coming in 14th in the coaches poll and receiving votes in the media poll while Central Missouri is now 15th in both national polls. The Tigers have played 14 games as the fifth-ranked team in the country, second-most of any spot in the polls (18 games at No. 3). FHSU is 11-3 all-time when ranked fifth in the coaches poll, including a 2-2 record as the fifth-ranked team last season. With a one game cushion in the league standings and two games to play, the Tigers need just one win this week to secure at least a share of the regular season conference title. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods was seriously injured Tuesday when his SUV crashed into a median, rolled over and ended up on its side on a steep roadway in suburban Los Angeles known for wrecks, authorities said. The golf superstar had to be pulled out through the windshield, and his agent said he was undergoing leg surgery.

Woods was alone in the SUV when it crashed into a raised median shortly before 7:15 a.m., crossed two oncoming lanes and rolled several times, authorities said at a news conference. No other cars were involved. The 45-year-old was alert and able to communicate as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out.

The airbags deployed, and the inside of the car stayed basically intact and that "gave him a cushion to survive the crash," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. Both of his legs were seriously injured, county Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.

They said there was no immediate evidence that Woods was impaired. Authorities said they checked for any odor of alcohol or other signs he was under the influence of a substance and did not find any. They did not say how fast he was driving.

The crash happened on a sweeping, downhill stretch of a two-lane road through upscale Los Angeles suburbs. Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, who was the first to arrive at the wreck, told reporters that he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph in the 45 mph zone and has seen fatal crashes there.

"I will say that it's very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive," Gonzalez said.

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, where he presented the trophy on Sunday. He was to spend Monday and Tuesday filming with Discovery-owned GOLFTV, with whom he has an endorsement. A tweet Monday showed Woods in a cart smiling with comedian David Spade.

According to Golf Digest, also owned by Discovery, the TV shoot was on-course lessons for celebrities, such as Spade and Dwyane Wade, at Rolling Hills Country Club.

Woods, a 15-time major champion who shares with Sam Snead the PGA Tour record of 82 career victories, has been recovering from Dec. 23 surgery on his lower back. It was his fifth back surgery and first since his lower spine was fused in April 2017, allowing him to stage a remarkable comeback that culminated with his fifth Masters title in 2019.

He has carried the sport since his record-setting Masters victory in 1997 when he was 21, winning at the most prolific rate in modern PGA Tour history. He is singularly responsible for TV ratings spiking, which has led to enormous increases in prize money during his career. Even at 45, he remains the biggest draw in the sport.

The SUV he was driving Tuesday had tournament logos on the side door, indicating it was a courtesy car for players at the Genesis Invitational. Tournament director Mike Antolini did not immediately respond to a text message, though it is not unusual for players to keep courtesy cars a few days after the event.

Woods feared he would never play again until the 2017 fusion surgery. He returned to win the Tour Championship to close out the 2018 season and won the Masters in April 2019 for the fifth time.

“Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries,” said his manager, Mark Steinberg. “He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”

A KABC-TV helicopter over the wreck showed a car on its side, with its front end heavily damaged just off the side of a road near a hillside. The air bags appeared to be deployed.

There was a second crash when a vehicle that had apparently stopped to help Woods got hit, said Christopher Thomas, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. That wreck was very minor, and no one was hurt.

Woods’ crash occurred shortly before 7:15 a.m. about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of the upscale communities of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, officials said.
