HUTCHINSON -&nbsp;The TMP-Marian Monarchs couldn’t overcome a rough second
half on offense as they fall 45-36 against Hesston in the 3A state semifinals.

&nbsp;The Swathers opened
the game on a 13-2 to build their largest first half lead at 11.

After trailing by 10 at 15-5 Bryce Seib and Kenton Ginther combined
to scored seven points in the closing minutes of the first quarter cutting the
Hesston lead to 20-12 after the first quarter.

Jace Wentling scored back-to-back field goals to start the
second half as the Monarchs outscored Hesston 9-0 and took a 21-20 lead at
halftime on Kenton Ginther’s second 3-point field goal of the first half.

They extended the lead to 23-20 on a Seib field goal to open
the second half but that was the only field goal the Monarchs could muster in
the third quarter while Hesston finished the quarter on an 11-0 run.

Hesston scored the first four points of the quarter to extend
the run to 15-0 with a 35-23 lead.

In the fourth quarter, TMP was able to close within six on a
Gavin Unrein 3-pointer at 41-35 but the Swathers finished the game at the free
throw line in a 45-36 victory. It’s their second straight win over TMP in the
3A state semifinals.

The Monarchs will take on Southeast of Saline in the third
place game Saturday at 12 p.m.

🏀TMP comes up short in state semifinals; will play for 3rd place

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji curled off a screen and was wide open for a rim-rattling ally-oop dunk, the inbound play perfectly executed if only Kansas teammate Dajuan Harris had lofted him the ball in the Big 12 quarterfinals.

Harris didn't make the same mistake against TCU in Friday night's semifinals.

This time, Agbaji soared through the air of T-Mobile Center and caught Harris' pass well above the rim, throwing it down with a one-handed slam. It punctuated a 22-point performance by the Big 12 player of the year, and a 75-62 victory over the Horned Frogs that sent the Jayhawks into Saturday night's championship game.

“It kind of happened so fast. It didn't really set in until I was at half court and everyone was going crazy,” Agbaji said. “I just watched reply of it and it was crazy. That was just a really good pass.”

One that should have been delivered the previous day, too.

“We've run it a few times,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “I got into him for not throwing it — he was even more open yesterday than he was today. But 'Juan threw a perfect pass and Och gave it a pretty good finish.”

It was a pretty good game all around for the Jayhawks (27-6), who will play Texas Tech or Oklahoma for their 16th league tournament title and 12th in the Big 12 era. Mitch Lightfoot added 15 points while getting extended minutes in place of injured big man David McCormack, and Remy Martin had 10 points in a confidence-building performance of his own.

“I felt great just being out there, doing anything I can to contribute to the win,” said Martin, the Arizona State transfer who has battled injuries all season. “I'm here to win a national championship. I'm here to win the tournament.”

Chuck O'Bannon had 15 points to lead TCU (20-12), whose own NCAA Tournament resume includes five wins over ranked teams this season. Mike Miles shook off a shooting slump to add 14 points for the Horned Frogs.

“I anticipated us playing better than we did but they really took it to us, a far more physical team than us tonight, far more aggressive,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “I like how we battled and stayed with it, but it just wasn’t our night.”

The Horned Frogs and Jayhawks played two tough games just last week, thanks to a COVID-19 rescheduling. They split them, with each team winning at home, but the Jayhawks needed every bit of Allen Fieldhouse magic that they could muster to escape with a 72-68 win in Lawrence.

Self spent about 10 minutes afterward lamenting the myriad matchup problems TCU presents.

There weren't any problems — matchup or otherwise — in the Big 12 semifinals.

TCU scored the game's first four points, but Kansas soon pulled ahead 10-9 on Braun's 3-pointer. That was the start of an 11-0 run that forced Dixon to call timeout.

Kansas also had five- and six-point bursts to extend the lead later in the first half, and the Jayhawks cruised into the locker room with a 44-30 advantage.

The dominance came largely at the defensive end, where Kansas forced three shot-clock violations in the first half.

The Jayhawks forced another in the second half after TCU had narrowed the gap to 54-44 with about 16 minutes to play. The Jayhawks answered with eight straight points, the last two coming from Martin after a shot-clock violation, and that gave Self's squad all the room it needed to cruise through the final 10 minutes and into the title game.

“They're a great team, they have great players — Agbaji is great,” Miles aid. “You have to give credit to them. They just played better than us.”

TCU secured its fifth 20-win season under Dixon with a 65-60 win over No. 22 Texas in the quarterfinals, a win that almost certainly clinched the Horned Frogs' at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. It would be their first since the 2017-18 season, when they ended a 20-year drought but were dumped in the first round.

Kansas only committed six turnovers for the entire game, while the Jayhawks turned 18 of them from TCU into a 23-4 edge in points off turnovers. That was more than the difference in the outcome of the game.

The Jayhawks make their 15th appearance in the Big 12 title game against the Sooners or Red Raiders.

🏃 Six second team All-America honors for Tigers at day one of NCAA Championships

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;competed in Day One of the NCAA DII Championships in St. Louis, Mo. on Friday (March 11). Verhaeghe (184) and Cooper (285) advanced to Saturday's action and are guaranteed to finish with All-America honors, while Henry (197) saw his season come to an end. Verhaeghe advanced to the quarterfinals with a fall in 3:26 over Matt Weinberg of Kutztown. Weinberg picked up a takedown early and Verhaeghe escaped almost immediately making the score 2-1 at the end of the opening period. Verhaeghe chose bottom in the second period and recorded a quick escape. He followed with a takedown seconds later and turned him for the pin. The two-time qualifier then faced the champion from Super Region VI, Billy Higgins of Nebraska-Kearney. This was the third matchup between these two in just 28 days. With help from a pair of takedowns, Higgins remains unbeaten in the series with a 5-4 decision. Verhaeghe, on the consolation side, faced Noah Curreri for a chance to place. The match was tied entering the third period, but Verhaeghe escaped early in the period and was able to score a takedown shortly after. Curreri would score an escape late in the period, but Verhaeghe was able to hang on and guarantee his All-America finish. During a three-week stretch in the first semester, the Fort Hays State University women’s basketball team was ranked No. 1 in the nation among all NCAA Division II schools.

Tiger Head Coach Tony Hobson will tell you that his assistant coaches &nbsp;are the best in the country every week.

Hobson is the coach you will see pacing the sidelines at this weekend’s NCAA Division II Central Regional at Gross Memorial Coliseum. With his game face on, Hobson will call out plays to his team and even chat a little with referees as they run down the court.

But the assistant coaches on the bench play just as vital of role for the Tigers, the fourth-ranked team in NCAA D-II and the top seed in the Central Regional with a 28-3 record.

Both Talia Kahrs and Paige Lunsford are former FHSU players of Hobson’s – and it’s no coincidence they are still a part of his team.

“When I hired Talia or Paige I knew exactly what I was getting,” said Hobson, in his 14th year at FHSU. “I knew them personally and the type of loyalty they had for our program and for me. I knew their work ethic and their knowledge of basketball. They were easy hires.”

Hobson calls coaching with two of his former players a luxury. It got even better last year when former Tiger standout Kacey Kennett joined the staff as a volunteer assistant.

Kennett, a four-year starter for the Tigers from 2017-20, is working on her master’s degree in health administration. She would like to coach someday and jumped at the chance to absorb more of Hobson’s acumen.

Kahrs was recruited by Hobson in 2007 when he coached at Hastings College in Nebraska. A daughter of a high school coach, Kahrs was familiar with a coaching life. She followed Hobson to FHSU when he was hired as the new Tiger coach in 2008, and they have been together ever since.

After receiving her undergraduate degree in 2012, Kahrs was offered a job to coach volleyball and basketball at Trinity Bible College in North Dakota. But the opportunity to coach with – and learn more from – Hobson was too great to pass up. She said “no” to the college job in North Dakota and decided to begin work on a master’s degree at FHSU. Hobson’s assistant at the time then accepted a head coaching job in Nebraska, and Kahrs took over the Tigers’ assistant role.

“That was a big decision back then,” Kahrs said. “Looking back, it was definitely a blessing that I decided to stay at FHSU and work on my master’s.”

Hobson is the winningest coach in FHSU women’s basketball history (310-108 record), and Kahrs has been a part of it all. The decision to stay in Hays has worked out personally, too. Kahrs met her husband, Garrett, while in graduate school. He now drives the Tiger bus on road trips, and their 3-year-old daughter, Malaki, gets to tag along with them.

Lunsford, who played for Hobson and the Tigers from 2012-16, did try her hand at college coaching away from Hays for one year. She graduated from FHSU in 2016 and joined the staff at Barton Community College in Great Bend. But the pull to return to her hometown – and FHSU – won out.

“Fort Hays State has been nothing but a blessing to me since I stepped on campus as a freshman,” said Lunsford, a former standout at Hays High School. “I loved playing for Coach Hobson and Talia, so I decided to come back and get my master’s and coach with them as a grad assistant.”

A third full-time coaching position was added for both FHSU men’s and women’s basketball in 2019.

Hobson said it was an easy decision who that would be for the women’s program. He said only once in his 30-year career has he hired he didn’t know personally. That didn’t work out, so he hasn’t done it since.

“When you hire someone you are familiar with, not only do you know them, but they know you,” he said. “That takes away a lot of the uncertainty of hiring new coaches.”

Kahrs and Lunsford are certain they made the right choice, too.

“Besides all his basketball knowledge, Coach Hobson is really passionate about the game and really cares about his players,” she said. “I admire all of those things in him.”

Lunsford agreed, saying the consistency of the FHSU coaching staff is invaluable.&nbsp;

“We know what Coach expects, and you don’t have to wonder what he wants done,” Lunsford said. “We’re all able to do our individual roles really well, which makes our collective effort more successful.”

The collective effort of this Tiger threesome is the epitome of success. After winning the MIAA regular-season and tournament titles, the Tigers earned the right to host the Central Regional for a third time.

Anyone watching this weekend’s FHSU’s regional games, whether in person or online, will see Hobson strolling the sideline, game face on.

He obviously knows what he’s doing. He won three national championships at Hastings College and has coached FHSU to NCAA D-II tournament appearances seven of the past eight years.

But, Hobson says “there’s nothing in our program that Talia or Paige can’t do.”

That has to be a scary thought for opponents.

He won three national championships at Hastings College and has coached FHSU to NCAA D-II tournament appearances seven of the past eight years.But, Hobson says “there’s nothing in our program that Talia or Paige can’t do.”That has to be a scary thought for opponents.

🏀 Thursday's State Tournament quarterfinal results

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self watched West Virginia counterpart Bob Huggins pick up two technical fouls in quick succession, then stalk off to the locker room to watch the final 30 minutes of their Big 12 quarterfinal matchup.

Nobody was more upset about the situation than Huggins.

“Nobody wants that. We caught a big break there but it's not a break we wanted,” Self said after the sixth-ranked Jayhawks cruised to an 87-63 victory Thursday. “I don't and I didn't like it.”

There was plenty to like about everything else.

Ochai Agabji scored 18 points for the top-seeded Jayhawks (26-6), who built a 41-19 halftime lead and never let up. Christian Braun had 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, and Jalen Wilson finished with 15 points.

Next up is fifth-seeded TCU, which rallied from 20 down to beat No. 22 Texas, in the semifinals Friday night.

“It is really good to get a win like that, to start off fast, and then we got off our feet a little bit,” Braun said. “We can focus on our next game. We got everybody involved. We got confidence going into the next game.”

Malik Curry led West Virginia ( 16-17) with 19 points. Taz Sherman had 10 points but was just 3 of 14 from the field.

Most of the excitement in the Big 12 Tournament's second quarterfinal came in the first 10 minutes, when Jayhawks roared to a 19-4 lead and had a T-Mobile Center full of red- and blue-clad fans whipped into a frenzy.

That's when Sherman missed a bucket — the 16th miss in the Mountaineers' first 17 shots — and complained to referee Doug Sirmons about the no-call. Sirmons immediately gave him a technical foul, and when Huggins roared off the bench in defense of his player, the Mountaineers' Hall of Fame finalist got two technicals of his own.

“He was definitely trying to defend us. It's what he’s done all year,” Mountaineers guard Sean McNeil said. “It's not my place to say whether the calls were right or wrong. My job is to play.”

Huggins' longtime associate head coach, Larry Harrison, took over when he headed to the locker room.

“They need to put bigger TVs in there,” Huggins said in a moment of levity. “The TVs are awfully small. We had a hard time getting a true picture of what was going on with those dinky TVs in there. They really need to upgrade that system.”

Wilson took the free throws for the Jayhawks, making five of the six from the three technical fouls, and that gave the Big 12 regular-season co-champs a 24-4 lead. It The lead swelled to 41-19 by halftime.

And unlike the opening quarterfinal Thursday, when the Horned Frogs dug out from an 18-point halftime hole to beat the fifth-seeded Longhorns, the Jayhawks provided an answer every time West Virginia tried to mount a run.

“Confidence is big,” said Mitch Lightfoot, who had 10 points and gave ailing big man David McCormack a rest. “We got everybody out there, the majority of guys scored; that's good to see the ball go in. We're confident going into the next game.”

🏀 No. 6 KU cruises past West Virginia in Big 12 quarters

The Osborne girls made their 11th state tournament appearance with a trip to Dodge City on Friday. The Bulldogs opened with the Pretty Prairie Bulldogs, each entering with a 22-1 record. Pretty Prairie opened the game on a 13-2 run and led the entire first half. They held two eleven point leads in the first quarter and took a 16-8 lead into the second quarter.

Osborne but the deficit down to four points at 16-12 and had the ball but tallied a turnover on the possession. Pretty Prairie responded with a 12-4 run to build a twelve point advantage at 28-16. They still held a double digit lead at half time 31-21.

Osborne hit a three pointer to open up the second half pull within seven points, but would never be closer the rest of the game. Pretty Prairie hit seven of ten shots in the third quarter to extend their lead to twenty after three quarter and would move to the semi-finals with a 52-33 victory.

The Hays Wrestling Club had 50 wrestlers qualify for the&nbsp;Kansas State Folkstyle Championships in Topeka this weekend.

Sixty-six members of the HWC took part in the USAWKS District 4 Championships at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays this past Saturday. Fifty of the 66 qualified for the state championship tournament this weekend in Topeka.

The guard was a second team All-Central Region selection by the D2CCA, announced Thursday by the organization. This is the first All-Region honor in Hobbs' storied career. The Alva, Okla. native was a first team All-MIAA selection earlier this month, becoming just the second Tiger to earn multiple first team All-MIAA honors. She is the eighth Tiger to earn All-MIAA status three times. Hobbs ranks first in the MIAA, second in the region and 10th in the country with a three-point percentage of 43.3 percent. She is second in the conference, sixth in the region and 28th nationally with an average of 4.7 assists per game while leading the conference and region and sitting in third in DII with an assist/turnover ratio of 3.47. Now in her third season at Fort Hays State, Hobbs is up to second on the all-time assists list at FHSU with 421 assists as a Tiger. She eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau this season, becoming the 23rd player to do so at Fort Hays State. She is third in program history in 3-point field goals while ranking first all-time in 3-point field goal percentage, free-throw percentage and assists per game. Hobbs averages 11.1 points per game this year, including 19 games with at least 10 points. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bruce Weber resigned as the basketball coach at Kansas State on Thursday, one day after the Wildcats lost to West Virginia in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament to cap a third straight losing season.

Weber made headlines following the loss to the Mountaineers at T-Mobile Center on Wednesday night when he lambasted the NCAA over its handling of the FBI investigation into college basketball corruption. Weber said he had refused to cut his hair until schools that were identified in the probe were punished, which some took as a swipe at rival Kansas.

“We won titles. We did it the right way,” said Weber, who led the Wildcats to a share of two Big 12 regular-season titles in 10 seasons in Manhattan. “I’m on the NCAA ethics committee. I was told they were going to take care of the people in the FBI stuff, so I told somebody I’m going to grow my hair until something happens. Obviously, it’s still growing.

“That’s the sad part about our business,” Weber added. “Lon Kruger told me the other day, all the guys in the FBI (probe) except one are in the NCAA Tournament. All those teams are going to be in the NCAA Tournament.”

Weber was a largely unpopular pick to replace Frank Martin when he was hired by former athletic director John Currie in 2012, shortly after he was fired by Illinois. Weber was mulling several mid-major jobs when Currie selected him to take over a program that had suddenly shot to national prominence on the back of six straight 20-win seasons.

Weber kept the momentum going for a while, too. He led the Wildcats to a share of the Big 12 title in his first season, made five NCAA Tournaments in his first seven seasons and added a share of another conference title just four years ago.

But the past few years have been a struggle, and all the hard-won support Weber had gained over most of the previous decade simply disappeared. He was forced to completely rebuild the roster after the 2019 season, then struggled to recruit at a level to get the Wildcats back to the point where they were competing for championships.

They went 9-20 last season and 14-17 this season, leaving Weber — who took the Illini to the national championship game in 2005 — with a 184–147 record with the Wildcats. His career mark, including a highly successful run at Southern Illinois that included two NCAA tourney appearances, stands at 407-301 with 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

“I’m very, very proud of my time here,” Weber said Wednesday night. “It was a long, long time that we won a championship and I told the guys, the funny part and the sad part, I didn’t get much credit for that, and they all said it wasn’t my guys, but I would tell you probably the closest group of all of my 40-some years of coaching in that group.

🏀 Wednesday's State Tournament results

HAYS – A Dylan Werth offensive rebound and put-back as time
expired in double-overtime lifted the TMP boys back to the 3A state semifinals
with a 68-67 win over Galina Wednesday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Galena opened the game with a 5-2 lead but after a 6-6 tie
TMP’s Luke Rome knocked in a pair of free throws putting the Monarchs up 8-6.
It was a lead that held up until the end of the third quarter.

The Monarchs (20-4) got back-to-back Kenton Ginther
3-pointers that gave TMP a five-point lead two different times in the closing
minutes of the first quarter.

Galena (22-2) was able to close the deficit to two at 18-16
at the end of the first quarter.

The Monarchs outscored the Bulldogs 8-3 to open the second
quarter to take a 26-19 lead on back-to-back Kade Harris field goals.

Galena closed within two before TMP closed the first-half
and opened the second on an 8-0 run taking their largest lead of the game at
37-27.

Trailing by 10 Galena outscored the Monarchs 16-2 to end the
third quarter and open the fourth quarter to take a 43-39 lead early in the
fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs led by six twice down the stretch in the fourth
quarter but with TMP down 49-43 Ginther hit back-to-back contested 3-pointers
tying the game at 49-49.

TMP, down two got a pair of Dylan Werth free throws with under
a minute left to tie the game at 51 and force overtime.

In the first overtime TMP briefly trailed and even took the
lead late before a Galena 3-pointer tied the game at 59-59 sending the game
into a second overtime.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the second
overtime but Werth scored seven of his team-high 17 points in the extra frame. 

In the closing seconds Galena took a one-point lead but the
Monarchs Werth collected a missed shot and banked it home as time expired
lifting TMP to a 68-67 double-overtime victory.

TMP improved to 3-0 in overtime this season.

Werth finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jace Wentling
added 14 points and Gavin Unrein and Kenton Ginther finished with 12 points
each.

Brett Sarwinski led all scorers with 32 for Galena. 

TMP will take on Hesston in Friday’s state semifinals. It’s
a rematch of last year’s semifinals game won by Hesston.

DODGE CITY - The Ness City boys opened their 2022 state basketball appearance by taking on the South Grey Rebels Wednesday evening. It marked the 11th trip to the state tournament for the Eagles.

Ness City led at 2-0 and 4-2, but never again after South Gray took the lead at 7-4. The Rebels built their advantage to seven points in the first quarter and six in the second. Each time the Eagles had an answer each time and trailed by just two points at halftime.

South Gray led by ten early in the third quarter before Ness City once again fought back and closed the gap down to three points at 35-32. The Eagles trailed 37-34 but missed two free throws and recorded a pair of turnovers on their next three possessions.&nbsp;

Ness City trailed 39-37 entering the fourth quarter and turned it over with their only possession down by two points. South Gray outscored the Eagles 23-16 in the fourth for the 62-53 win.

The Eagles were led by the 25 points of Taylor Cable. Jose Guzman added 13. South Gray put four in double figures led by Joseph Dyck with 19 off the bench.

Kansas State only made two of its final 10 field goals. West Virginia shot 52.8% for the game.

McNeil reached 20-plus points for the third time this season, going 7 of 10 from the field against the Wildcats. The Mountaineers won their second straight game following a seven-game losing streak. 

Nijel Pack led Kansas State (14-17) with 18 points. Mark Smith added 17 points and Ismael Massoud had 13. Kansas State's reserves were outscored 29-5.

The Bulldogs went up 38-34 with 6:35 remaining but didn't hit a field goal for the remainder of the game. Macksville took the lead for good with a basket at the 1:45 mark. Osborne managed just three free throws over the final 6:35. The Mustangs made each of their four free throws after taking the lead for the 45-41 victory.

Grady Wolters scored a game high 14 and Doak Guttery added 10 for Osborne. Rogelio Ibarra scored 13 and Ryan Kuckelman recorded a double-double at 10 points and 10 rebounds for Macksville.

The Bulldogs season ends at 21-3. Macksville will play Olpe in the semifinals on Friday with a record of 22-2.
