DODGE CITY - The Ness City boys opened their 2022 state basketball appearance by taking on the South Grey Rebels Wednesday evening. It marked the 11th trip to the state tournament for the Eagles.
Ness City led at 2-0 and 4-2, but never again after South Gray took the lead at 7-4. The Rebels built their advantage to seven points in the first quarter and six in the second. Each time the Eagles had an answer each time and trailed by just two points at halftime.
Highlights
South Gray led by ten early in the third quarter before Ness City once again fought back and closed the gap down to three points at 35-32. The Eagles trailed 37-34 but missed two free throws and recorded a pair of turnovers on their next three possessions.
Ness City trailed 39-37 entering the fourth quarter and turned it over with their only possession down by two points. South Gray outscored the Eagles 23-16 in the fourth for the 62-53 win.
The Eagles were led by the 25 points of Taylor Cable. Jose Guzman added 13. South Gray put four in double figures led by Joseph Dyck with 19 off the bench.
