KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;Kansas senior
Ochai Agbaji has been named 2022 National Association of Basketball Coaches
(NABC) All-America First Team, the NABC announced Wednesday. This is the fourth
All-America First Team selection for Agbaji as he also earned the accolade with
the Associated Press (AP), The Sporting News and Bleacher Report. 
The NABC, AP and The Sporting News are three of the four that make up the
collaboration of Consensus All-America teams with Agbaji garnering first-team
honors for all three. The United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA)
is the lone All-America team of the four that has not been announced for
2021-22. 
Joining Agbaji on the 2022 NABC All-America First Team are Kofi Cockburn
(Illinois), Johnny Davis (Wisconsin), Jaden Ivey (Purdue) and Oscar Tshiebwe
(Kentucky). The All-America honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across
NCAA Division I. 
Agbaji is the 42nd Jayhawk to earn NABC All-America status and the
latest first-team honoree since Udoka Azubuike in 2020. Agbaji is the seventh
first-team and 19th overall NABC All-America selection in head coach
Bill Self’s era at Kansas that began in 2003-04 and covers 19 seasons. 
A Naismith Player of the Year semifinalist and on the Wooden Award Ballot,
Agbaji is coming off Big 12 Championship All-Tournament selection in guiding
Kansas to the tourney title last weekend. Agbaji was named the 2022 Big 12
Championship Most Outstanding Player. Earlier this week, he was named to the
NABC All-District 8 First Team. 
Agbaji, the 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year, leads the Big 12 and is 25th
nationally in scoring at 19.7 points per game. The Kansas City, Missouri, guard
is second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (40.5%, 31st
nationally) and in three-point field goals made per game (2.8, 42nd
nationally). 
A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records
book. He holds the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made
at 53. He also ranks 18th on the KU career scoring list with 1,570 points,
fourth on the three-point field goals made (239) and fourth on three-point
field goals attempted (645).

Agbaji named NABC All-America First Team

The Hays High girls had two players named to the All-Western
Athletic Conference basketball team released Tuesday.

Freshman Molly Martin and junior Carly Lang were named to the
second team. 

Martin averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game for the Indians this
past season. Lang averaged 7.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and a
team leading 1.9 steals per game.

The Indians finished 13-9 advancing to their sub-state title
game where they lost to eventual state runner-up Salina Central.

Liberal’s Ashley Carrillo was named the WAC Player of the Year.
She averaged 17.3 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.3 steals
while helping Liberal to the WAC title. 

Liberal’s Brandi Fowler was named the WAC Coach of the Year.

🏀 Martin, Lang named All-Western Athletic Conference

Hays High had five boys and two girls named to the All-Western Athletic Conference wrestling team announced Wednesday.

5A state champion Gavin Meyers (220) and Gavin Nutting (285) were named to the first team. Sophomores Elijah McCullough (106), Tacoma Augustine (113) and Harley Zimmerman (132) were named to the second team.

Meyers finished out his senior season with a perfect record and collected his first career state championship.&nbsp;Zimmerman finished state runner-up at 132 and had a 44-4 record this past season.

State runner-up&nbsp;Sarah Zimmerman (109) was named to the girls first team and&nbsp;Addison Otte (120) on the second team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🥎 Tigers home opener start time moved back

WICHITA, Kan. - Fort Hays State defeated Newman on Tuesday as the offense exploded for seven extra-base hits. A five-run seventh inning sealed the deal for the Tigers as the bullpen kept the Jets in check. The Tigers snapped a five-game skid and picked up their second MIAA win of the season.

The Jets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of hits in the bottom of the first. The Tigers split the score in half in the third as a single by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6328">Ed Scott</a>&nbsp;scored&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6308">Griffin Brunson</a>. Newman responded quickly and pushed its lead back to two in the bottom half of the inning.

In the fourth, the Tiger bats found their rhythm as doubles from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6622">Mason Holton</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6620">Jenner Kehe</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6327">Grant Schmidt</a>&nbsp;led to five runs for FHSU. It all happened with two outs as Holton got on base with a double to left field before Brunson walked and brought up the top of the order. Kehe launched a ball into right field bringing both runners around, tying the game 3-3. A single from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6318">Brady Kreutzer</a>&nbsp;brought in Kehe to give the Tigers their first lead of the contest. Another single from Scott gave way for a bases-clearing double from Schmidt, pushing the Tiger lead to 6-3.

The Jets immediately fought back and scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead back 7-6. That spelled the end of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6334">Padraic Walsh's</a>&nbsp;start, going 3.1 innings with four strikeouts.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6322">Dustin Menard</a>&nbsp;came in for the Tigers and stopped the rally getting a strikeout and a flyout.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the sixth as the Tigers plated three runs on five hits to take the lead back 9-7. The frame began with three straight singles by Kehe, Kreutzer, and Scott to generate the first run. Schmidt brought home the next run with a sacrifice fly.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6333">Kade Wallace</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6336">Traelon Yarbrough</a>&nbsp;added another pair of singles with the latter driving in the third run. In the home half,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6317">Conner Kessler</a>&nbsp;relieved Menard and the two-way player picked up a pair of punchouts in the inning, but a couple of singles from the Jets would tie the game 9-9 before a flyout ended the inning.

FHSU went on another offensive frenzy in the seventh picking up five runs on four hits and an NU error. The Tigers put five consecutive batters on base. Schmidt plated the first two runs with a single to left to break the tie. A fielding error by the Jets allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6623">Ty Campbell</a>&nbsp;to reach first, while also bringing in Schmidt and Scott. Holton wrapped up the Tiger scoring in the inning with an RBI double to left solidifying a 14-9 lead for the Tigers at the seventh inning stretch. The Tigers managed another run in the eighth when Kehe tripled and came in to score on a Schmidt single.

Kessler held the Jets in check working out of jams in the seventh and eighth innings, adding another pair of strikeouts.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6527">Jacob Ensz</a>&nbsp;took the mound for the Tigers in the ninth. The Jets managed a run on a pair of hits in the final frame, but Ensz slammed the door with a punchout securing a 15-10 victory for the Tigers.

The Tiger offense managed season-high marks in runs (15), hits (20), and RBIs (13) in the high-scoring victory. Kehe and Kreutzer each managed four hits with Scott, Schmidt, and Holton all finishing with three. Holton led the extra-bases effort with three doubles. Schmidt led the way with six RBIs, while Kehe and Scott each had a pair.

Menard allowed a run on one hit with a strikeout in 1.2 innings tossed. Kessler collected the winning decision with one run allowed on three hits and four strikeouts in three full innings. Ensz allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout to close out the game.

The Tigers will be back at home this weekend, March 18-20, for an MIAA series with Central Oklahoma at Larks Park. First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Vitztum is now a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selection after being named to the second team last year. Sports Information and Athletic Communication professionals nationwide select the Academic All-America&nbsp;Team, which honors a combination of academic and athletic accomplishments of the individuals selected. Vitztum was one of just 15 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball student-athletes named to the Academic All-America Team. This year, he was a top-five choice among CoSIDA membership across the country. He was the only men's basketball student-athlete from the MIAA chosen to the list of 15 this year. Vitztum&nbsp;earned a master's degree from FHSU in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance, doing so with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average in his graduate studies. He also had a near perfect GPA as an undergraduate with a 3.9 GPA as a Finance major. Vitztum is a two-time recipient of the MIAA Academic Excellence Award, is a three-time recipient of the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award for the seasons he earned All-MIAA honors, and a six-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. He was also a finalist for the MIAA Men's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year Award in 2021. On the court, Vitztum is a three-time All-MIAA selection, including first-team honors in both 2021 and 2022. ⛳ Tiger women place fourth at Hillcat Classic

“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball,” second baseman Rogers Hornsby <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/mlb/status/1074319018415267841?lang=en">once said</a>. “I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.”

For a while, it was looking like the start of spring would come and go without any baseball on the horizon.

But just when <a target="_blank" href="https://thecomeback.com/mlb/fans-react-mlb-lockout-rob-manfred.html">fan morale was at its nadir</a>, Major League Baseball announced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2022/03/10/with-mlb-lockout-over-here-are-all-the-details-of-new-2022-26-labor-deal/?sh=3439736f23e2">a five-year agreement with its players</a>, ending the second-longest labor interruption in MLB history. Now, April 7, 2022, will serve as most teams’ opening day.

<a target="_blank" href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=jR65pQoAAAAJ&amp;hl=en">Sports economists like me</a> have long studied labor disruptions in sports. In this dispute – the first major one in baseball <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/mlb/indians/opinion/reliving-the-1994-mlb-strike-as-2022-labor-negotiations-continue">since the mid-1990s</a>
 – player grievances largely centered on two issues: the length of time 
it takes them to reach free agency and the lack of a payroll floor. Both
 policies suppressed their salaries despite the fact that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/193466/total-league-revenue-of-the-mlb-since-2005/">league revenues have grown in recent years</a>.

The new collective bargaining agreement takes some important steps 
toward correcting these problems. But it mostly just pushes the big 
issues another five years down the track. The deal also leaves baseball 
players with a fundamentally different – and very likely worse – 
arrangement than their counterparts in the other major American sports 
leagues have

MLB requires players to be on a big league roster for six years before they’re allowed to hit <a target="_blank" href="https://franchisesports.co.uk/mlb-free-agency-explained/">free agency</a> and negotiate a salary with any team of their choosing. In the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nba.com/news/free-agency-explained">NBA</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://operations.nfl.com/updates/football-ops/2021-nfl-free-agency-questions-answers/">NFL</a>,
 players need to play for only four years before they become free 
agents. And unlike football and basketball – sports in which players 
usually go straight from college to the pros – baseball players often 
spend several years in the minor leagues before getting called up to the
 Show. Those seasons don’t count toward the required service time for 
free agency.

Therefore, many players don’t get the right to freely negotiate for 
their services until they are in their late 20s or early 30s – ages at 
which many players are already past their prime.

In the period before free agency, players are bound to teams in ways 
that allow the teams to underpay them relative to their contributions to
 team success both on the field and for the team’s bottom line. For 
example, because he was in only his second season in the league, the 
Cleveland Guardians’ <a target="_blank" href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/biebesh01.shtml">Shane Bieber</a> earned just $231,000 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/news/shane-bieber-wins-2020-al-cy-young">despite winning the American League’s Cy Young Award</a>
 as the league’s best pitcher. In a market in which he could freely 
negotiate for his services, Bieber would have likely earned in excess of
 $20 million. But he won’t actually get the right to earn market value 
for his talents until 2025, at which point he will be nearly 30 years 
old.

Since most players’ <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/07/070709131254.htm">MLB careers</a> are shorter than six years, the majority of players never make it through “lean” years to that big free-agency payoff.

These free-agency rules remain unchanged in the new agreement, although the league’s minimum salary has been increased from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33470321/sources-mlb-union-reach-tentative-agreement-new-cba-salvage-162-game-season">$570,500 to $700,000</a>
 and will grow to $780,000 by the end of the deal. Another $50 million 
will be distributed each season to players who have yet to reach salary <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/what-is-arbitration-mlb-what-does-it-mean-baseball-eligibility-process/1atg6pycmf69o1x5yy2v31o03w">arbitration</a>,
 a system that grants pre-free-agency players at least some level of 
bargaining power with their existing team. In addition, the agreement 
includes incentives to encourage teams to bring up players from the 
minor leagues somewhat earlier, which should result in some players 
achieving free agency at a younger age.

While these are welcome additions that will increase wages for MLB’s 
lowest-paid players by about 40%, the new amounts allocated to players 
still total less than 1% of MLB’s annual revenue.

The MLB is also unique in that players are not entitled to specified 
percentages of league revenues, and teams are not required to spend a 
minimum amount on payroll. The new agreement does little to change this 
structure.

In the NFL, for example, organizations must spend at least <a target="_blank" href="https://nflpa.com/posts/nfl-economics-101">48% of league revenue</a> on player compensation, and individual teams have a salary cap of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-sets-salary-cap-at-208-2-million-per-team-for-2022-season">$208.2 million in 2022</a>.
 They’re also obligated to spend at least 89% of the cap on salaries 
over the course of several seasons, which effectively creates a salary 
floor of roughly $185 million.

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/193466/total-league-revenue-of-the-mlb-since-2005/">MLB revenues</a> rose 15%, from $9.03 billion in 2016 to $10.37 billion in 2019, while the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/236213/mean-salaray-of-players-in-majpr-league-baseball/">average salary</a> remained flat at $4.38 million, indicating that players were taking home a smaller piece of the economic pie.

Though revenue took a huge hit in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.libertymedia.com/investors/news-events/press-releases/detail/461/liberty-media-corporation-reports-fourth-quarter-and-year">some data suggests</a>
 that revenues in 2021 largely recovered to their pre-pandemic levels 
while average salaries fell nearly 5%. On top of that, the average 
figures are distorted by record-breaking contracts from just a handful 
of superstars. The <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/spotrac/status/1498823166650638336">median salary</a>
 of an MLB player fell from $1.65 million in 2015 to $1.15 million in 
2021 – a decline of over 30%. Over half of all players earn at or near 
the league’s minimum salary, since they are ineligible for either free 
agency or arbitration.

While MLB doesn’t have a salary cap that limits what teams can spend on players, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-mlb-cbt-explained-luxury-tax-20220304-rtmzefdymbcghll7vhsn42zqni-story.html">it does have a luxury tax</a>
 that penalizes teams that spend more than a certain amount on payroll. 
The luxury tax, which effectively serves as a soft salary cap, is set to
 increase from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-mlbpa-agree-to-cba">$210 to $230 million</a> in the new agreement, and will rise to $244 million by 2026.

However, since only eight teams exceeded the threshold even once 
between 2003 and 2019 – and only the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers have 
paid the luxury tax on a regular basis – this increase is unlikely to 
have a substantial impact on the wages paid to the typical player.

Most importantly, MLB teams – unlike their counterparts in other 
sports – have no salary floor. Such teams as the Orioles, Pirates and 
Marlins <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/">spend less on their entire active rosters</a>
 than some other teams spend on a single starting pitcher. These teams 
cycle through underpaid young players and then let them sign elsewhere 
when they’re eligible for free agency. Although these teams tend to be 
wildly unsuccessful on the field and at the ticket office, generous 
revenue sharing arrangements with the league <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2020/04/09/despite-lockdown-mlb-teams-gain-value-in-2020/?sh=5ec8e3002010">still allow them to make money</a>.

Nothing in the new agreement changes the incentives for these teams or provides relief for their long-suffering fans.

To me, the owners’ strategy was transparent. They knew the players 
had legitimate grievances that might result in a strike later in the 
season, so they wanted to force concessions as soon as possible, knowing
 that the players’ bargaining power would rise as the season progressed.
 A players strike right before playoffs in the fall would have inflicted
 the maximum pain on the owners.

Time was always on the owners’ side: Their careers as owners tend to 
be much longer than those of players, whose bodies are always aging.

Baseball junkies will notice <a target="_blank" href="https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/mlb-rules-changes-baseball-cba-deal-dh-pitch-clock-bases-postseason">several cosmetic changes</a>
 to the game right away: an expanded postseason, sponsor advertisements 
on jerseys and a designated hitter in the National League. The agreement
 also <a target="_blank" href="https://fansided.com/2022/03/10/mlb-lockout-new-rules-cba/">opens the door for rule changes in 2023</a>
 that include larger bases, limits on defensive shifts and a pitch 
clock. Other than some real improvements to the salaries for the 
league’s lowest-paid players, however, the economics of baseball’s 
underlying labor model remains as flawed as ever.

Nevertheless, for this summer – and for the next five years, at least
 – fans will be able to grab their peanuts and Cracker Jack and head out
 to the old ballgame.

I stare out the window and wait for spring.”For a while, it was looking like the start of spring would come and go without any baseball on the horizon.But just when <a target="_blank" href="https://thecomeback.com/mlb/fans-react-mlb-lockout-rob-manfred.html">fan morale was at its nadir</a>, Major League Baseball announced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2022/03/10/with-mlb-lockout-over-here-are-all-the-details-of-new-2022-26-labor-deal/?sh=3439736f23e2">a five-year agreement with its players</a>, ending the second-longest labor interruption in MLB history. Now, April 7, 2022, will serve as most teams’ opening day.<figure>

In this dispute – the first major one in baseball <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/mlb/indians/opinion/reliving-the-1994-mlb-strike-as-2022-labor-negotiations-continue">since the mid-1990s</a>
 – player grievances largely centered on two issues: the length of time 
it takes them to reach free agency and the lack of a payroll floor. Both
 policies suppressed their salaries despite the fact that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/193466/total-league-revenue-of-the-mlb-since-2005/">league revenues have grown in recent years</a>.The new collective bargaining agreement takes some important steps 
toward correcting these problems. But it mostly just pushes the big 
issues another five years down the track. The deal also leaves baseball 
players with a fundamentally different – and very likely worse – 
arrangement than their counterparts in the other major American sports 
leagues have<h2>The indentured servants of pro sports</h2>MLB requires players to be on a big league roster for six years before they’re allowed to hit <a target="_blank" href="https://franchisesports.co.uk/mlb-free-agency-explained/">free agency</a> and negotiate a salary with any team of their choosing. In the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nba.com/news/free-agency-explained">NBA</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://operations.nfl.com/updates/football-ops/2021-nfl-free-agency-questions-answers/">NFL</a>,
 players need to play for only four years before they become free 
agents. And unlike football and basketball – sports in which players 
usually go straight from college to the pros – baseball players often 
spend several years in the minor leagues before getting called up to the
 Show. Those seasons don’t count toward the required service time for 
free agency.Therefore, many players don’t get the right to freely negotiate for 
their services until they are in their late 20s or early 30s – ages at 
which many players are already past their prime.In the period before free agency, players are bound to teams in ways 
that allow the teams to underpay them relative to their contributions to
 team success both on the field and for the team’s bottom line. For 
example, because he was in only his second season in the league, the 
Cleveland Guardians’ <a target="_blank" href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/biebesh01.shtml">Shane Bieber</a> earned just $231,000 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/news/shane-bieber-wins-2020-al-cy-young">despite winning the American League’s Cy Young Award</a>
 as the league’s best pitcher. In a market in which he could freely 
negotiate for his services, Bieber would have likely earned in excess of
 $20 million. But he won’t actually get the right to earn market value 
for his talents until 2025, at which point he will be nearly 30 years 
old.Since most players’ <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/07/070709131254.htm">MLB careers</a> are shorter than six years, the majority of players never make it through “lean” years to that big free-agency payoff.These free-agency rules remain unchanged in the new agreement, although the league’s minimum salary has been increased from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33470321/sources-mlb-union-reach-tentative-agreement-new-cba-salvage-162-game-season">$570,500 to $700,000</a>
 and will grow to $780,000 by the end of the deal. Another $50 million 
will be distributed each season to players who have yet to reach salary <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/what-is-arbitration-mlb-what-does-it-mean-baseball-eligibility-process/1atg6pycmf69o1x5yy2v31o03w">arbitration</a>,
 a system that grants pre-free-agency players at least some level of 
bargaining power with their existing team. In addition, the agreement 
includes incentives to encourage teams to bring up players from the 
minor leagues somewhat earlier, which should result in some players 
achieving free agency at a younger age.While these are welcome additions that will increase wages for MLB’s 
lowest-paid players by about 40%, the new amounts allocated to players 
still total less than 1% of MLB’s annual revenue.<h2>A soft cap – and no floor</h2>The MLB is also unique in that players are not entitled to specified 
percentages of league revenues, and teams are not required to spend a 
minimum amount on payroll. The new agreement does little to change this 
structure.In the NFL, for example, organizations must spend at least <a target="_blank" href="https://nflpa.com/posts/nfl-economics-101">48% of league revenue</a> on player compensation, and individual teams have a salary cap of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-sets-salary-cap-at-208-2-million-per-team-for-2022-season">$208.2 million in 2022</a>.
 They’re also obligated to spend at least 89% of the cap on salaries 
over the course of several seasons, which effectively creates a salary 
floor of roughly $185 million.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/193466/total-league-revenue-of-the-mlb-since-2005/">MLB revenues</a> rose 15%, from $9.03 billion in 2016 to $10.37 billion in 2019, while the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/236213/mean-salaray-of-players-in-majpr-league-baseball/">average salary</a> remained flat at $4.38 million, indicating that players were taking home a smaller piece of the economic pie.Though revenue took a huge hit in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.libertymedia.com/investors/news-events/press-releases/detail/461/liberty-media-corporation-reports-fourth-quarter-and-year">some data suggests</a>
 that revenues in 2021 largely recovered to their pre-pandemic levels 
while average salaries fell nearly 5%. On top of that, the average 
figures are distorted by record-breaking contracts from just a handful 
of superstars. The <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/spotrac/status/1498823166650638336">median salary</a>
 of an MLB player fell from $1.65 million in 2015 to $1.15 million in 
2021 – a decline of over 30%. Over half of all players earn at or near 
the league’s minimum salary, since they are ineligible for either free 
agency or arbitration.While MLB doesn’t have a salary cap that limits what teams can spend on players, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-mlb-cbt-explained-luxury-tax-20220304-rtmzefdymbcghll7vhsn42zqni-story.html">it does have a luxury tax</a>
 that penalizes teams that spend more than a certain amount on payroll.

OPINION: MLB agreement fails to address players’ biggest grievances

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior Ochai
Agbaji has been named 2022 Associated Press All-America First Team, the AP
announced Tuesday. This is the third All-America First Team selection for
Agbaji as he also earned the accolade with The Sporting News and Bleacher
Report. 
The AP and The Sporting News are two of the four that make up the collaboration
of Consensus All-America teams with Agbaji garnering first-team honors for
both. Kansas’ last AP All-America First Team selection was Devonte’ Graham in
2018 who went on to be Consensus All-America First Team. In the Bill Self era
at Kansas, Agbaji is the fifth player named to the Associated Press All-America
First Team joining Graham, Frank Mason III (2017), Thomas Robinson (2012) and
Wayne Simien (2005). KU has had a player named AP All-America first, second or
third team 19 times in the Self era. 
Joining Agbaji on the 2022 AP All-America First Team are Kofi Cockburn
(Illinois), Oscar Tshiebwe (Kentucky), Johnny Davis (Wisconsin) and Keegan
Murray (Iowa). The AP team is selected on by the 60 members who vote on the
weekly AP men’s basketball poll. 
A Naismith Player of the Year semifinalist, Agbaji is coming off Big 12
Championship All-Tournament selection in guiding Kansas to the tourney title
last weekend. Agbaji was named the 2022 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding
Player. Earlier today, he was named to the NABC All-District 8 First Team. 
Agbaji, the 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year and on most all All-America First
Teams, leads the Big 12 and is 25th nationally, in scoring at 19.7 points per
game. The Kansas City, Missouri, guard is second in the league in three-point
field goal percentage (40.5%, 31st nationally) and in three-point field goals
made per game (2.8, 42nd nationally). 
A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records
book. He holds the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made
at 53. He also ranks 18th on the KU career scoring list with 1,570 points,
fourth on the three-point field goals made (239) and fourth on three-point
field goals attempted (645).

🏀 KU's Agbaji named Associated Press All-America First Team

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State tried mightily to fight off a second-half comeback by Missouri Western in the NCAA Central Regional Final Monday in Hays, but the Griffons dashed their hopes of a trip to the Elite Eight on a basket with eight seconds remaining. The Tigers had one last try to win the game, but had to settle for a runner that fell off the mark as the clock expired.

It was the third time since 2015 the Tigers had advanced to the regional final only to lose on their home court. The Tigers looked in good position to make their first-ever NCAA Elite Eight appearance when they were up 21 points with 2:04 to go before halftime. However, the Griffons were able to sneak back to a manageable deficit with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, making the halftime margin 15 at 38-23.

Missouri Western made the first bucket of the second half to extend their late first half run to 8-0 overall before a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;free throw and a bucket by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;push the lead to 16. It reached 16 once more on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;jumper with 5:48 to go in the third, but the Griffons kept chipping away and their 7-0 run at the end of the quarter had them back within four at 49-45. The screws really started to tighten when the Griffons got the lead down to two points at the 7:50 and 5:33 marks of the fourth quarter and then Jaelyn Haggard hit a jump shot that bounced several times on the rim before falling through to tie the score at 60-60 with 3:43 remaining. Haggard struck again moments later by drawing a foul on the shot, and then received two more free throws on an untimely technical foul on Lauren West. Haggard buried all four foul shots, putting the Griffons up 64-60 with three minutes to play.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers back within two with a pair of free throws and then Wagner stepped up in the clutch with a driving layup to tie the game with 1:27 to play. But, with ice water in her veins, Haggard buried a 3-point field goal about 10 seconds later from several feet beyond the arc to put the Griffons back up by three. Wagner got two of the points back with a pair of free throws, but the Tigers then had to foul on the other end. Missouri Western made just one of two attempts, leaving the door open for the Tigers. The Tigers crashed right through that door moments later when Hobbs found Wagner with a play over the top and Wagner was fouled as she made a layup to tie the game. She then buried the and-one attempt to give the Tigers the lead back. After a timeout to advance the ball, Missouri Western got the ball into Brionna Budgetts, who drove the baseline and scored at the rim with eight seconds to go. That ultimately would win the game for MWSU as the Tigers had to scramble after an in-bounds play did not go as planned, and a running jumper from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6444">Kate Dilsaver</a>&nbsp;was a bit long as the clock ran out on the Tigers and another amazing season. Wagner led the Tiger effort with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;was the other Tiger to reach double figures in scoring with 14 points. Hobbs finished with nine and Randall had seven. Haggard was the x-factor for the Griffons in the second half, scoring all but two of her game-high 19 points after halftime. Corbyn Cunningham did the majority of her 17-point damage in the second quarter when she had 10. The Tigers were MIAA Regular Season and Tournament champions this year, finishing at 30-4 overall. It was the fourth time the program has won at least 30 games in a season and third time within the last eight seasons under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>. However, the cruel fate of all three of the 30+ win teams under Hobson (2014-15, 2018-19, and 2021-22) was all three fell in the Central Regional Final at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Missouri Western, which finished fifth in a very deep MIAA conference this year, moves on to the Elite Eight in Birmingham, Alabama with an overall record of 24-9. The Griffons are one of four teams in the MIAA to post 24+ wins overall this season, which also includes regional participants Missouri Southern and Nebraska-Kearney. This result closed out the careers of two of the best-ever to put on the Black and Gold, high school teammates&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;from Alva, Okla. Randall finished her career with 1,396 points and 515 rebounds. She ranks ninth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU. Hobbs finished her collegiate career with 1,390 points and 550 assists, the final three years being at FHSU where she was the first player in program history with at least 1,000 points and 400 assists. She had 1,082 points and 431 assists as a Tiger and had 308 points and 119 assists in her early career at Oklahoma State University. And after four years on the court for the Tigers, Concordia senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6435">Cydney Bergmann</a>&nbsp;finished with 498 points and 317 rebounds.

She then buried the and-one attempt to give the Tigers the lead back. After a timeout to advance the ball, Missouri Western got the ball into Brionna Budgetts, who drove the baseline and scored at the rim with eight seconds to go. That ultimately would win the game for MWSU as the Tigers had to scramble after an in-bounds play did not go as planned, and a running jumper from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6444">Kate Dilsaver</a>&nbsp;was a bit long as the clock ran out on the Tigers and another amazing season. Wagner led the Tiger effort with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;was the other Tiger to reach double figures in scoring with 14 points. Corbyn Cunningham did the majority of her 17-point damage in the second quarter when she had 10. The Tigers were MIAA Regular Season and Tournament champions this year, finishing at 30-4 overall. Missouri Western, which finished fifth in a very deep MIAA conference this year, moves on to the Elite Eight in Birmingham, Alabama with an overall record of 24-9. The Griffons are one of four teams in the MIAA to post 24+ wins overall this season, which also includes regional participants Missouri Southern and Nebraska-Kearney. This result closed out the careers of two of the best-ever to put on the Black and Gold, high school teammates&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;from Alva, Okla. Randall finished her career with 1,396 points and 515 rebounds. She ranks ninth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU. Hobbs finished her collegiate career with 1,390 points and 550 assists, the final three years being at FHSU where she was the first player in program history with at least 1,000 points and 400 assists. She had 1,082 points and 431 assists as a Tiger and had 308 points and 119 assists in her early career at Oklahoma State University. And after four years on the court for the Tigers, Concordia senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6435">Cydney Bergmann</a>&nbsp;finished with 498 points and 317 rebounds.

GREAT BEND — As the years pass by, it is becoming more difficult to remember a time
when the Central Plains High School girls basketball team was not celebrating a
state championship. What started with a late-game, baseline inbounds play against
Jefferson County North at Bramlage Coliseum in 2014, continued this past
Saturday at Barton Community College with a win over Golden Plains for another
state title.

It wasn’t easy for Oilers’ coach Pat Stiles, with the game tied
going into the fourth quarter, but Central Plains found a way to win their 8th
straight championship. "All we said going into the fourth quarter
 was be patient, go side to side and good things will happen," said 
Stiles. "They did it. They worked the ball a little bit. They refused to
 lose. I could see it in their eyes. They weren't going to give this one
 up." 
The Lady Oilers have cruised to 20-plus win seasons, have won a Kansas-record 25
consecutive state playoff games and piled up a 229-5 record since 2014.

Stiles
understands the expectations for his team but also realizes the adversity his
team battled through. 
"To see Madison (McGuire) sprain her ankle and battle through it," said 
Stiles. "Brynna (Hammeke) had a bad back all year. We had Kassidy 
(Nixon) puking in a trash can on the sideline. They're just warriors. 
They refuse to lose." 
Central Plains will graduate three seniors in May, including Nixon,
Kailynn Depperschmidt and McGuire.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji was a lightly regarded three-star prospect when he left his home in Kansas City, Missouri, four long years ago to play big-time college basketball just down the road at Kansas.

Agbaji returned home this weekend as the Big 12's player of the year, then showed out in front of hundreds of friends and family during the Big 12 Tournament, leading the sixth-ranked Jayhawks to a 74-65 win over Texas Tech on Saturday night to capture not only the title for his team but MVP honors for himself.

“I'm just blessed to be in this position, but I give it back to my teammates," said Agbaji, the fifth player in history to win the regular-season player of the year award and the tournament’s top honor. "I couldn't have done it without them.”

Agbaji scored 16 points, including a couple clinching foul shots with just over a minute left, to lift the Jayhawks (27-6) past the plucky Red Raiders (25-9) and likely secure a No. 1 seed in next week's NCAA Tournament.

David McCormack added 18 points and 11 rebounds, Christian Braun had 14 points and Jalen Wilson and Remy Martin scored 12 apiece for the the Jayhawks (27-6), who showcased poise and resilience borne of a veteran group of players in the final minutes as the Red Raiders fumbled away their own chance at the title.

Texas Tech trailed 63-58 with about four minutes to go when Terrence Shannon Jr. was called for charging. Kevin Obanor turned it over on the Red Raiders' next possession, then stepped over the end line while trying to inbound the ball for another turnover, each of them allowing the Jayhawks to draw away down the stretch.

The heavily pro-Kansas crowd began its haunting “Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk” chant with 28.6 seconds left on the clock, and coach Bill Self's squad coasted to its 12th conference tournament title since the league's inception in 1996-97.

“I thought it was a great game,” Self said. “The first half we couldn’t stop them, they couldn’t stop us. The second half I don't think was artistic on either end, but we made a couple of really good toughness plays when we needed them.”

Shannon finished with 14 points, and Bryson Williams had 17 for the Red Raiders (25-9), who still have never won the Big 12 Tournament. They also lost to Oklahoma State in their only other championship appearance in 2005.

“They're a team that's extremely difficult to prepare for,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said, “and I wish we had two or three days to do that. They play at a great pace and they have a lot of players that do things extremely well.”

The teams, who finished a game apart in the Big 12, waged a pair of nip-and-tuck classics during the regular season with each winning at home. Their game at Allen Fieldhouse may have been the league's best all year, a back-and-forth showdown that went to double overtime before the Jayhawks escaped with the win.

Just how evenly matched were they Saturday night?

Neither team scored more than five straight points in the first half. Neither led by more than four. Neither scored more than two straight baskets without the other team providing some kind of answer at the other end.

Even when it looked as if Kansas was building some momentum, and Martin knocked down a long jumper to make it 37-33 in the final minute, Williams provided an answering 3-pointer to keep the Red Raiders within a point at the half.

It remained close throughout the second half.

When Texas Tech took a 54-51 lead with 11:20 to go, Wilson and Agbaji — the tournament's MVP — provided back-to-back buckets that began a 12-2 charge and gave the Jayhawks a 63-56 lead with less than five minutes to play.

🏀 No. 6 KU beats No. 14 Texas Tech to win Big 12 tourney

HUTCHINSON – For the second time in four years the
TMP-Marian boys basketball team earned a fourth-place finish at the 3A state
basketball tournament after a 57-44 loss Saturday to Southeast of Saline.

The two teams traded the lead early in the first quarter with
TMP leading 6-4 and 8-7. But with TMP up 6-4 Southeast of Saline put together a
9-2 run to end the first quarter and led 13-8 heading into the second period.

Werth cut the Trojans lead to one at 13-12 right out of the gate in the second
quarter but Southeast of Saline was able to maintain the lead.

Down 20-14 TMP got a Kade Harris layup and Werth and
Wentling scored back-to-back again tying the game at 20 only to see the Trojans
hit two straight 3-point field goals and built a 26-20 lead. They lead 26-22 at
halftime.

Southeast of Saline opened the third quarter on a 16-4 run
to take a 42-26 lead. The Trojans led 44-30 through three quarters.

The Trojans built an 18-point lead to open the fourth quarter
on their way to a 57-44 victory.

Jace Wentling finished with a team-high 17 points and eight
rebounds. Gavin Unrein added 10 points.

HUTCHINSON – For the second time in four years the
TMP-Marian boys basketball team earned a fourth-place finish at the 3A state

No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney will take on no 7 Missouri Western in the first semifinal, set for a 5 p.m. first tip. The Tigers won their 10th game in a row Friday, reaching 10 straight wins for the 14th time in program history. It is the second-longest active winning streak in DII. The top-seeded Tigers led for more than 33 minutes in the contest, but found itself down by one to the No. 8 seed with less than a minute to play. The Mavericks (21-7) used an 18-6 run over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to storm in front after trailing by as many as 14. The visitors shot just 31.5 percent from the floor for the game, but hit 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) during that run to take a 61-60 lead with 3:52 to play. The Tigers ratcheted things up on defense down the stretch, however, forcing seven consecutive missed shots and two turnovers to give themselves a chance to retake the lead.
