Fort Hays State women's basketball coach Tony Hobson held his weekly press conference Tuesday prior to the Tigers quarterfinal round game in the MIAA Tournament.

The Tigers are the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season title and will host Missouri Southern State Wednesday at 6:00 pm at Gross Coliseum.

HAYS - The TMP Lady Monarchs used runs of 15-0 and 10-1 in the first half as they cruised to a 51-13 win over Russell Monday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in the first of the 3A sub-state.

Trailing 3-2 early in the first quarter Emilee Lane and
Sophia Balthazor hit back-to-back three-pointers sparking a 15-3 run putting
TMP (18-3, 10-1 MCL) up 17-3 late in the first quarter. 

Lane finished the first quarter with eight points and
Balthazor added five more as TMP led 19-5 after one quarter of action.

In the second quarter Russell (9-12, 4-7 MCL) was held to a single free
throw as the Monarchs outscored the Broncos 10-1 building a
29-6 halftime lead.

The Monarchs highest scoring quarter came in the third
quarter as TMP outscored Russell 20-5 taking a 49-11 lead into the fourth quarter.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP claimed the
51-13 victory.

TMP’s Emilee Lane led all scorers with 15 points. Jaci VonLintel,
in her first action since injuring her ankle before the Norton game and missing
three games, added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Russell was held to just two field goals. Rylan Reeves and Harlee
Donovan both scored three points.

TMP will take on Goodland in Thursday’s sub-state semifinals
in Norton.

Randall&nbsp;scored a career-high 29 points in Thursday's win at Missouri Western, helping the Tigers lock up the regular season MIAA title with a 77-69 victory. The senior knocked down 9-of-16 from the floor (56.3 percent), 2-of-4 from behind the arc (50 percent) and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe (75 percent) while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out five assists in the win over the Griffons. Randall had already tallied a career-best 27 points before the end of the third quarter. She then added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds in Saturday's 70-47 win at Northwest Missouri State. The Alva, Okla. native averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the week. This is the second weekly honor for a Tiger player this season after&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5847">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;was named athlete of the week in December. The Tigers wrapped up the regular season as MIAA champions with a 20-2 record, the most wins by a Division II women's basketball team this season. The Tigers are one of three conference schools listed in this week's top 25, joined by Nebraska-Kearney in 14th and Central Missouri in 15th. Minnesota Duluth is the only other ranked team from the central region, with the Bulldogs sitting in eighth this week. FHSU is now 13-3 when playing as the fifth-ranked team in the country all-time after a 2-0 week last week. Fort Hays State will open postseason play on Wednesday when they host Missouri Southern in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust. EDMOND, Okla. - The No. 15 Fort Hays State wrestling team saw four Tigers place in the top four of their respective weight class at the 2021 NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championships Sunday. Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;placed&nbsp;second in the 285-pound division, locking up a trip&nbsp;to compete at the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships in St. Louis, Mo. March 12-13. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5804">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;(157 pounds) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197 pound) both placed third and are in the mix for a trip to nationals, pending a coaches vote on the five "wild card" selections.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;was the final placer for the Tigers, finishing in fourth at 174 pounds. Due to reduced field sizes in all NCAA Championship events this postseason, Super Region IV was assigned 25 qualifying spots for the national championships. Typically, the top three wrestlers at each weight class advance to compete at the NCAA Championships, however this year saw only two finalists from each weight class earn a guaranteed trip to St. Louis. The remaining five spots will go to five of the third-place finishers and will be voted on by the 10 coaches in the region. Official selections for the national championships will be announced early this week. Due to an issue with the team scoring, team standings were not immediately available at the conclusion of the tournament. After coming up once placement short in last year's regionals, eighth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;avenged himself by earning his spot at the national tournament with a second-place finish in 2021. Cooper started his day in the quarterfinals, grinding out back-to-back decisions to reach the finals.&nbsp;Though the senior from Cimarron came up on the losing end of a 9-4 decision in the championship bout, he clinched second place&nbsp;due to his earlier win over&nbsp;Ian Keuhl of McKendree. Cooper&nbsp;finished his day 2-1 and scored 10 team points for the Tigers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5804">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;started out fast in the 157-pound weight class. After pinning Central Missouri's John Riddle in the third period of the quarterfinal bout, Scantlin followed that up with another victory by fall. Scantlin pinned Newman's Kendall Frame early in the second period, securing a spot in the championship match. Unfortunately his momentum came to an end there, with Scantlin falling to Ty Lucas of Central Oklahoma in that bout by a 5-2 decision.&nbsp;Scantlin&nbsp;then came up just short in a true-second match against Lindenwood's Ronald Gentile, 3-2. Due to the top two wrestlers getting a guaranteed spot in the national championships, this year the second place finisher had to wrestle the third place finisher if they hadn't wrestled earlier in the day. Scantlin concluded the day with a team-high 11 team points and a 2-2 record. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;had a strong regional performance in his first chance at postseason action. Henry didn't wrestle until the semifinal round after advancing through the quarterfinals on an injury default. The redshirt-freshman dropped his first match of the day, falling victim to a late pin against&nbsp;Dalton Abney of Central Oklahoma, forcing Henry to work&nbsp;through the consolation side of the bracket. Henry reached the third-place match with a 10-7 win in the consolation semifinals before securing third place by&nbsp;pinning Newman's Ivan Balavage late in the third period.&nbsp;The redshirt freshman ended his day placing third in the 197-pound division, going 3-1 and scoring 10.5 points for Fort Hays State. Representing the Tigers in the 174-pound weight class,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;started his journey strong with a tech fall victory (17-1) in round one followed by a major decision victory (13-5) in the quarterfinals. After falling in the semifinal bout, Verhaeghe wrestled through the consolation side and earned himself a spot in the third-place matchup after another bonus-point win. Verhaeghe fought hard, but was unable to overcome Central Oklahoma's Wyatt Jordan, falling 8-2. Marty placed fourth for the Tigers in the 174-pound class and scored nine team points after a 3-2 day. No. 1&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5806">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;cruised through the first two rounds, winning via&nbsp;tech fall (16-1) in round one and major decision (18-6) in the quarterfinals. Turner ended up on the wrong end of an 8-2 decision in the semifinal bout before suffering a fall in the consolation semifinal. The sophomore turned in a 2-2 record on the afternoon and brought in 4.5 points for the Tigers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6068">Cody Hicks</a>&nbsp;began his 165-pound tournament with an early second period fall over Thomas Karlo of Kentucky Wesleyan. After being defeated by an 8-3 decision in the quarterfinals, Hicks responded with a close 9-8 decision victory over Drury's Will Kuster in round three of the consolation bracket. Hicks eventually fell in the consolation semifinals via pin, ending his regional performance at 2-2 and giving the Tigers four team points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5795">Clint Herrick</a>&nbsp;fought hard in the 184-pound division, battling for a close 2-1 decision victory in round three of the consolation bracket before ended his day in the consolation semifinals. Herrick scored one team point for the Tigers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5809">Cole Zebley</a>&nbsp;was unable to come away with a victory in the difficult 149-pound division.&nbsp;Zebley fell by decision in both round one, 8-2, and round two of the consolation bracket, 2-1. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5792">Broderick Green</a>&nbsp;dropped both his matches by decision, including 8-2 in the quarterfinals and 6-3 in round three of the consolations. EDMOND, Okla. - The No. 15 Fort Hays State wrestling team saw four Tigers place in the top four of their respective weight class at the 2021 NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championships Sunday. Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;placed&nbsp;second in the 285-pound division, locking up a trip&nbsp;to compete at the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships in St. Louis, Mo. March 12-13. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5804">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;(157 pounds) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197 pound) both placed third and are in the mix for a trip to nationals, pending a coaches vote on the five "wild card" selections.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;was the final placer for the Tigers, finishing in fourth at 174 pounds. Due to reduced field sizes in all NCAA Championship events this postseason, Super Region IV was assigned 25 qualifying spots for the national championships. Typically, the top three wrestlers at each weight class advance to compete at the NCAA Championships, however this year saw only two finalists from each weight class earn a guaranteed trip to St. Louis. The remaining five spots will go to five of the third-place finishers and will be voted on by the 10 coaches in the region. Official selections for the national championships will be announced early this week. Due to an issue with the team scoring, team standings were not immediately available at the conclusion of the tournament. After coming up once placement short in last year's regionals, eighth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;avenged himself by earning his spot at the national tournament with a second-place finish in 2021. Cooper started his day in the quarterfinals, grinding out back-to-back decisions to reach the finals.&nbsp;Though the senior from Cimarron came up on the losing end of a 9-4 decision in the championship bout, he clinched second place&nbsp;due to his earlier win over&nbsp;Ian Keuhl of McKendree. Cooper&nbsp;finished his day 2-1 and scored 10 team points for the Tigers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5804">Anthony Scantlin</a>&nbsp;started out fast in the 157-pound weight class. After pinning Central Missouri's John Riddle in the third period of the quarterfinal bout, Scantlin followed that up with another victory by fall. Scantlin pinned Newman's Kendall Frame early in the second period, securing a spot in the championship match. Unfortunately his momentum came to an end there, with Scantlin falling to Ty Lucas of Central Oklahoma in that bout by a 5-2 decision.&nbsp;Scantlin&nbsp;then came up just short in a true-second match against Lindenwood's Ronald Gentile, 3-2. Due to the top two wrestlers getting a guaranteed spot in the national championships, this year the second place finisher had to wrestle the third place finisher if they hadn't wrestled earlier in the day. Henry didn't wrestle until the semifinal round after advancing through the quarterfinals on an injury default. The redshirt-freshman dropped his first match of the day, falling victim to a late pin against&nbsp;Dalton Abney of Central Oklahoma, forcing Henry to work&nbsp;through the consolation side of the bracket. Henry reached the third-place match with a 10-7 win in the consolation semifinals before securing third place by&nbsp;pinning Newman's Ivan Balavage late in the third period.&nbsp;The redshirt freshman ended his day placing third in the 197-pound division, going 3-1 and scoring 10.5 points for Fort Hays State. HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team held off Pittsburg State for a 11-10 win on Sunday at Larks Park. The Tiger pitching staff combined to strike out 17 Gorillas, the most for an FHSU staff since 2001 (18 K vs Colorado School of Mines, 3/24/01). Tiger starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6026">Jake Campbell</a>&nbsp;(1-0) set the tone early, racking up eight strikeouts over the first three innings after striking out the side in each of the first two frames. 🥎 Tigers split for second straight day at Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team placed fifth at the 2021 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships that wrapped up Sunda. The Tigers saw three school records go down Sunday, in addition to two MIAA champions, six All-MIAA performances and six provisional marks on the weekend. FHSU picked up 86 team points to place fifth, matching its best-ever finish at the indoor MIAA championships. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5925">Matthew Pieper</a>&nbsp;opened the day with a come-from-behind victory in the heptathlon. The senior compiled 5,258 points over the seven events, breaking his own program record by 32 points. He was in third place with two events remaining, but climbed into the lead after clearing the second-best height in the pole vault (14-1.25) and running the second-best time in the 1,000m (2:46.72). Pieper's total of 5,258 points is also the facility record inside Washburn's Indoor Athletic Facility. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5917">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;broke the school record in the 600y run after winning the race in 1:10.91. It was Lang's second All-MIAA honor in the race after placing third a year ago. The sophomore's time is also a new facility record. Pieper and Lang teamed up with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5923">Jack Pakkebier</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5954">Kaden Wren</a>&nbsp;to break another school record at the end of the day, combining for a time of 3:16.62 in the 4x400m relay, one-hundredth of a second faster than the previous record. The team placed fifth in the race. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5918">Aaron Mangan</a>&nbsp;finished second and earned All-MIAA honors in the 800m run finals, running a personal-best time of 1:52.86. The time is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5916">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;earned a pair of All-MIAA honors after placing third in both the 60m finals and the 200m finals. TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team placed fifth at the 2021 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships that wrapped up Sunda. The Tigers saw three school records go down Sunday, in addition to two MIAA champions, six All-MIAA performances and six provisional marks on the weekend. FHSU picked up 86 team points to place fifth, matching its best-ever finish at the indoor MIAA championships. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5925">Matthew Pieper</a>&nbsp;opened the day with a come-from-behind victory in the heptathlon. The senior compiled 5,258 points over the seven events, breaking his own program record by 32 points. He was in third place with two events remaining, but climbed into the lead after clearing the second-best height in the pole vault (14-1.25) and running the second-best time in the 1,000m (2:46.72). Pieper's total of 5,258 points is also the facility record inside Washburn's Indoor Athletic Facility. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5917">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;broke the school record in the 600y run after winning the race in 1:10.91. It was Lang's second All-MIAA honor in the race after placing third a year ago. The sophomore's time is also a new facility record. 🏃 FHSU men fifth at MIAA Championships, set three school records

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team placed sixth at the 2021 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships that wrapped up Sunday (Feb. 28). Two Tigers took home championships while five earned All-MIAA honors. FHSU posted one automatic qualifying mark and two provisional marks on Sunday while picking up 56.5 team points, enough to match its best-ever finish at the event. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;won the high jump competition after again surpassing the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark. The freshman cleared a height of 5-9.25 while finishing first in the high jump for the fifth time in five tries this season. Hart cleared the bar on her first attempt at each of the five heights she cleared. After breaking a pair of school records Saturday,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;matched one of those marks while earning one title and three All-MIAA honors on Sunday. Holman placed first in the 60m finals, matching her school-record time of 7.59. She then finished third in the 200m finals, crossing the line in 25 seconds flat. The junior rounded out the day with another podium finish, this time in the 4x400m relay with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5976">Emily Salmans</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5977">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>. The Tigers teamed up to post a time of 3:51.98, good for third place. Salmans also earned multiple All-MIAA accolades, placing third in the 800m finals with a time of 2:15.58.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5969">Faith Little</a>&nbsp;grabbed the Tigers an additional team point with an eighth-place finish in the race, posting a time of 2:20.26. TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team placed sixth at the 2021 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships that wrapped up Sunday (Feb. 28). Two Tigers took home championships while five earned All-MIAA honors. FHSU posted one automatic qualifying mark and two provisional marks on Sunday while picking up 56.5 team points, enough to match its best-ever finish at the event. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;won the high jump competition after again surpassing the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark. The freshman cleared a height of 5-9.25 while finishing first in the high jump for the fifth time in five tries this season. Hart cleared the bar on her first attempt at each of the five heights she cleared. After breaking a pair of school records Saturday,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;matched one of those marks while earning one title and three All-MIAA honors on Sunday. Holman placed first in the 60m finals, matching her school-record time of 7.59. She then finished third in the 200m finals, crossing the line in 25 seconds flat. The junior rounded out the day with another podium finish, this time in the 4x400m relay with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5976">Emily Salmans</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5977">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>. The Tigers teamed up to post a time of 3:51.98, good for third place. Salmans also earned multiple All-MIAA accolades, placing third in the 800m finals with a time of 2:15.58.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5969">Faith Little</a>&nbsp;grabbed the Tigers an additional team point with an eighth-place finish in the race, posting a time of 2:20.26. Savolt helped the Tiger team score in the field events as well, placing sixth in the triple jump with a clearance of 38-9.5, a mark that surpasses the NCAA Division II provisional mark. Elsewhere in the field events,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5967">Summer Kragel</a>&nbsp;placed fifth in the high jump after clearing the 5-4.5 bar, grabbing FHSU 3.5 team points. 🏃‍♀️ Tiger women finish sixth at MIAA Championship

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 5 Fort Hays State women's basketball team secured sole possession of the 2021 MIAA regular season championship with Saturday's 70-47 win at Northwest Missouri State. The Tigers wrap up the regular season 20-2 overall and 20-2 in MIAA play, tied for the most conference wins by a league school in MIAA history. Fort Hays State used two big runs to take complete control in the first half. The Tigers scored the first 14 points of the game, holding the Bearcats scoreless for nearly seven minutes. Northwest (7-15, 7-15 MIAA) closed within seven late in the first quarter before Olivia Hollenbeck hit a layup before the buzzer sounded, giving the Tigers a 19-10 lead after 10 minutes.

The teams traded buckets early in the second quarter before FHSU went on its biggest run of the season, scoring the next 17 points to take a commanding 38-13 lead. The Tigers hit 6-of-7 from the floor during that stretch while forcing three Bearcat turnovers and six consecutive missed shots. Jaden Hobbs scored eight points during that stretch, including a 3-pointer at the 5:11 mark of the second quarter that put the senior over 1,000 points for her collegiate basketball career.

Northwest Missouri State scored six points late in the second quarter, making the halftime score 42-19 in favor of the Tigers. Freshmen took care of business for the Tigers in the third quarter, with Jessis Sallach, Emma Ruddle, Katie Wagner and Hollenbeck combining to score 16 of FHSU's 18 points. A 3-pointer from Wagner gave the Tigers a 33-point advantage late in the third quarter, 60-27, four points shy of their largest lead in a game this season. Northwest scored 11 consecutive points late in the game, but the Tigers had done more than enough early to seal the win. Fort Hays State hit 46.2 percent from the floor (24-of-52), eclipsing 45 percent for the 10th time this season. The Tiger defense held Northwest to a shooting percentage of 29.8 percent, the fourth time they've held an opponent below 30 percent. The Tigers dominated on the boards, outrebounding Northwest 39-27. FHSU forced 11 turnovers, scoring 13 points off those Bearcat miscues. Hobbs finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season. Hollenbeck and Sallach both scored a game-high 14 points. Each also added four rebounds and one block. Whitney Randall added eight points and nine rebounds, with Ruddle contributing eight points and one steal. The Tigers have now won at least 20 games in each of the last 10 seasons. It is far and away the longest active streak in the MIAA, with the next closest school doing so in four-straight seasons. FHSU had eight 20-win seasons over the first 42 years of the program before the current streak began in 2011-12. The win is FHSU's 15th consecutive victory, tied for the fourth longest streak in program history. Fort Hays State will return to Gross Memorial Coliseum for at least one more game Wednesday (March 3) when the Tigers host Missouri Southern in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust. First tip between the Tigers and Lions is set for 6 p.m. If the Tigers were to win on Wednesday, they would then host the semifinal and championship rounds of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, respectively (March 6-7). Game times for those dates are TBD. FHSU season ticket holders can purchase tickets for Wednesday's game beginning at 8 a.m. Monday (March 1) with tickets available to the general public starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday (March 2). LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — After its record streak in the Top 25 came to an end, Kansas spent the past the past three weeks quietly getting better, ripping off five consecutive wins before taking No. 14 Texas to overtime in a close loss on the road.

Baylor spent most of that same stretch mired in a COVID-19 shutdown.

So when No. 17 Kansas walked into Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, it had reason to be confident it could end the Bears’ perfect start. And by the time David McCormack finished pouring in 20 points, and Marcus Garrett added 14 on his senior night, the Jayhawks walked out with a 71-58 victory that left No. 1 Gonzaga as the nation’s only undefeated team.

“We had three weeks where they got worse and they had three weeks where they got better,” said Baylor coach Scott Drew, whose team led Kansas wire-to-wire in a 77-69 victory last month in Waco, Texas. “Even Superman has kryptonite and I guess COVID protocols are ours.”

Kansas (18-8, 12-6) had something to do with it, too.

The Jayhawks held the nation’s top 3-point shooting team to 6 of 26 from beyond the arc. They had a 48-28 advantage on the boards. They forced Baylor (18-1, 11-1) into early foul trouble and proceeded to go 18 of 26 from the foul line.

They also made sure Baylor would need to wait at least a few more days to clinch its first conference title since 1950.

“There were a lot of naysayers saying whatever they would like,” said McCormack, who fouled out in the final minutes. “We had our ebbs and flows, but we’re continuing to rise, and we’re going to continue to rise into March.”

MaCio Teague scored 18 points and Davion Mitchell added 13 for the Bears, but leading scorer Jared Butler was 2 of 9 from the field and managed just five points while Garrett — one of the nation’s best defenders — hounded him all night.

The result was just the Bears’ second loss in 12 games against ranked opponents over the past two years, and an end to the best start in school history — though one that still has them positioned for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s a huge win for us. It’s not going to get you a ring on your finger or anything like that, but it’s a big win,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We could have easily won in Austin and really finished strong, but I’m really happy with the way we played.”

Baylor got off to a lousy start, just like it did in its return from its long COVID-19 pause, when it struggled to a comeback win over Iowa State. The Bears had nearly as many air balls (three) as points (four) over the first 6-plus minutes, and foul trouble sent Butler, Mark Vital and Matthew Mayer to the bench for long stretches.

Baylor eventually got on track, only for Kansas to close with seven straight points and lead 33-30 at the break.

The Jayhawks kept stretching their lead early in the second half. Ochai Agbaji finally knocked down a 3 after missing his first six tries, and McCormack followed Garrett’s miss with an easy put-back to make it 41-33 at the under-16 timeout.

Thus began a back-and-forth tussle between what has become the two premier programs in the Big 12.

Seldom-used guard Dajuan Harris scored five straight points for Kansas. Teague answered with back-to-back 3-pointers for Baylor, getting fouled on the second one and turning it into a four-point play. Christian Braun drove the lane and drew fouls for the Jayhawks, then Vital began getting shots to go in the paint for the Bears.

Kansas was still clinging to a 57-52 lead with 5 minutes to go when Braun made a pair of free throws. That began a 10-2 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes, most of the offense coming at the foul line, effectively putting away the game.

“Our guys, we didn’t quit. We had chances,” Drew said. “It was down to five or seven, I thought we were right there. They drew a foul and I thought that was the turning point as far as our comeback.”

Garrett was the only player honored on senior night, which proceeded despite the late addition of UTEP to the schedule Thursday night. Fellow seniors Mitch Lightfoot and Chris Teahan plan to use COVID-19 rules to return next season.

 ⚾ Tigers fall in home opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Once recruited by Kansas State, Sean McNeil showcased why the Wildcats wanted him by coming up strong again for West Virginia.

McNeil scored 16 points and No. 10 West Virginia used two big runs in the second half to beat Kansas State 65-43 on Saturday.

“I think it was a tough shooting night for all of us all down the board,” McNeil said. “At halftime, we talked, made some adjustments and figured out who we were really going to be. We came out in the second half and kind of showed that.

“I think we picked our defensive intensity up and that kind of led to some easy buckets.”

McNeil is shooting 29 of 54 (54%) from the floor over his last five games, including 18 of 35 (51%) from 3-point range. McNeil has improved his scoring average from 5.5 last year to 11.7 this season.

“We tried recruiting him. But of course he chose closer to home,” Kansas State coach Bruce Webber said. “His improvement from last year to this year, but even during this year is astronomical. He’s got that pure jump shot.”

The Mountaineers (17-6, 10-4 Big 12) have won six of their last seven, including wins over No. 18 Texas Tech, No. 14 Texas and No. 17 Kansas.

Both teams started without their point guards. Kansas State freshman Nijel Pack, the team’s leading scorer, sat out with an eye infection, and the Wildcats were unable to make up for his floor presence.

“We don’t have ballhandlers and passers. I think he’s one of the leaders in the league in assist to turnovers ratio,” Webber said. “He’s one of the ones who can make big shots and he’s good at that.”

West Virginia’s Miles McBride was banged up in practice and missed the first eight minutes of Saturday’s game. He was held to five points.

With McBride limited and teammates Derek Culver and Jalen Bridges getting into early foul trouble, West Virginia was sluggish in the first half. Davion Bradford took advantage of Culver’s absence with seven first-half points and the Wildcats trailed 26-22 at halftime.

West Virginia scored the first seven points of the second half. Jordan McCabe, who started the game in place of leading scorer Miles McBride, then scored all seven of his points during a 17-0 run that gave the Mountaineers their largest lead, 59-34, with 5:14 remaining.

“I thought the second half we played pretty well. We were pretty efficient,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “The first half was a miserable half for both teams.”

In the teams’ last meeting Jan. 23, Kansas State committed 28 turnovers and lost 69-47 in Manhattan, Kansas. The Wildcats committed 18 turnovers on Saturday, leading to 23 points for West Virginia.

Culver added 11 points for West Virginia.

Bradford finished with 11 points, and Mike McGuirl had 10 for Kansas State (7-19, 3-14). The Wildcats were held to their second-lowest points total of the season.

Kansas State: The Wildcats saw a two-game winning streak snapped. They were coming off a 62-57 win Tuesday over No. 7 Oklahoma, but couldn’t pull off a second upset of a Top 25 team this season.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers got off to a good start as part of a four-game home blitz over eight days to finish the regular season.

“That’s huge, for us especially,” McNeil said. “Mostly every time we travel, we’ve got anywhere from a two- to three-hour flight. We love playing at home in front of these fans, so we can get some confidence going into the Big 12 tournament.”

One game after making just 58% of its free throws in a win over TCU, West Virginia went 15 of 17 (88%) against Kansas State.

Huggins earned his 898th career win, just behind North Carolina’s Roy Williams. Both could reach Bob Knight’s 902 victories this season.

West Virginia should take another step up after several teams ranked higher lost in the past week.

SALINA – The Ellis girls had a pair of wrestlers earn medals
Friday at the girls division II state championship tournament Friday in Salina.

At 143 pounds freshman Kaydawn Haag earned a second-place
finish in her first ever trip to the state tournament. 

Haag opened the tournament with a first period fall over
Isabelle Masters of Burlingame.

In the championship semifinals Haag earned a 7-1 win over
Trego’s Sydney Boyle.

In the finals Livia Swift of Pratt defeated Haag &nbsp;4-2 to claim the title.

Junior Haley Cranwell finished fifth at 126 pounds.

Cranwell opened the tournament with a second period fall
over Gabby Rusk of Fort Scott. 

In the second round Cranwell lost by a first period fall to
the eventual champion Jordyn Knecht of Paola.

Cranwell went 1-1 on the consolation side of the bracket, wrapping
up the tournament with a 9-7 win over Rusk of Fort Scott in the fifth-place

GirlsGreat Bend 46 - Hays 40 The opportunities were there for Hays High against Great Bend. They just couldn't take advantage falling 46-40 in the final game of the regular season. The Indians trailed 9-2 in the first quarter after starting the game 1-12 from the field. Hays would tie the game at nine and eventually grab their only first half lead on a free throw at 13-12. Great Bend took the lead back and led 21-20 at halftime.

Great Bend could never push their lead higher than three during the third quarter and Morgan Engle tied the game at 28 on a three pointer with just one second before the fourth quarter.

It took three minutes for either team to get on the board in the fourth quarter. Hays would take their biggest lead of the game at 30-28. It would be their final lead and short lived at just twenty seconds.&nbsp;

Trailing by seven Re Green and Carly Lang hit threes forty-five seconds apart to pull within one at 39-38 with two minutes left. The Indians though would only score two points the remainder of the game on a pair of Jersey Johnson free throws.

Hays falls to 6-14. Great Bend improves to 7-11. They both finish conference play at 1-7.

Both are part of the same 5A Sub-State with Salina Central and Salina South. The Indians will play the top seeded Central Mustangs on Tuesday in Salina. Great Bend also travels to Salina and plays at South High School.

If short-handed Great Bend wasn't supposed to give the number undefeated team in 5A a run on Friday night, nobody relayed the message to the Panthers. Hays High saw Great Bend hit five of their first six shots which included three of three behind the arc for a 13-5 lead.

The Panthers continued to lead for the entire first quarter and kept a one point lead at 18-17 with 3:20 remaining in the second quarter. A Jace Linenberger basket pushed Hays to the lead at 19-18 with 2:25 left before halftime. The Indians never trailed again.

The Indian defense allowed just two third quarter points but scored just seven themselves taking a 32-23 lead to the final quarter. Hays steadily grew the lead through the fourth quarter with the help of eight of eight shooting from the free throw line and five of nine shooting from the field.

An alley-oop dunk finished by senior TJ Nunnery was the finishing touches on senior night allowing the three seniors to be taken off the floor before the final 50-32 final.

Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 15. Dalyn Schwarz added 11 and Nunnery's dunk put him at ten points.

Hays finishes the regular season at 20-0 and wins the Western Athletic Conference at 8-0. Great Bend drops to 4-14 and 1-7.

The same two teams will meet up in the first round of Sub-State in Hays next Wednesday.

Hays High honors six on senior night

The Hays High Indians wrestling team brought home two more medals from the 5A state tournament in Park City Friday.

Freshman Harley Zimmerman earned a fourth place finish in his first trip to state.

Zimmerman opened the tournament with a 10-8 win over Kyle Adams from Topeak-Seaman.

He then lost by a 22-11 major decision to Hayden Mills over Blue Valley Southwest.

On the back side of the bracket Zimmerman went 1-1, losing in the third place match to Clayton Bowers of Maize 3-2.

At 220 pounds Hays High junior Gavin Meyers entered the tournament 23-0.

He earned a first period fall over Gabe Cornett of KC Turner in the first round.

But lost in the championship semifinals 3-1 in overtime.

Meyers then lost his consolation semifinal match 4-1 to Dylan Ward of Lansing and was forced to injury defeat in the fifth place match.

Meyers finished&nbsp; the year 24-3.&nbsp;

During Brooklyn Schaffer's sophomore year, she had a conversation with her older sister. The talk centered around volleyball, a sport the two had played since elementary school. Brooklyn said she thought she could go on to the next level to play volleyball.&nbsp;

At the time Albany was playing for the Warhawks of University of Lousiana-Monroe and had the insight that Brooklyn was looking for. Brooklyn said the conversation led to Albany helping her start the recruiting process.

That process came to an official end Friday as Brooklyn signed her National Letter of Intent to play for Florida State College at Jacksonville. The two year college will be the spring board that Brooklyn looks to use in getting to another school. Her head coach the next two seasons comes with a wealth of experience including qualifying for the Olympics in Beach Volleyball for Puerto Rico.

First year head coach Shannon Funk said that one of the main skills that sets Schaffer up well for college is her ability to read the ball on the other side of net from her libero position. That allows her to be in the correct position defensively.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HHS' Brooklyn Schaffer headed for the Sunshine State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team clinched a share of its third regular season MIAA championship Thursday evening (Feb. 25), fighting off Missouri Western on the road, 77-69.

Fort Hays State has also all but locked up the top overall seed in the MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust. Barring any cancellations over the final two games of the regular season, the Tigers would have home-court advantage throughout the tournament. FHSU will host a quarterfinal game on Wednesday (March 3) and would host the semifinals on Saturday (March 6) and the championship on Sunday (March 7) if they were to advance to the weekend. 🏀No. 5 Tigers secure third regular season MIAA title

PARK CITY – Hays High sophomore Sarah Zimmerman earned a
second-place finish at 109 pounds at the girls Division I state wrestling
tournament Thursday at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Zimmerman opened the tournament with a second-period fall
over Kaitlyn Morris over Washburn Rural. 

She followed that up with a three-period fall over the
number two seed Olivia O’Donnell in the championship semifinals.

In the finals Zimmerman lost an 8-5 decision to top-seed
Dialeen French from Wichita North High School.

With the second-place finish Zimmerman is now a two-time
state placer for the Indians. She finished sixth a year ago at 109 pounds.
