TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis is now 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA after a 7-0 loss at Washburn on Sunday (Mar. 27). The Ichabods swept all of the matches contested, though the Tigers competed tough in several singles matches.
The No. 1 team of Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz, as well as the No. 3 team of Aliyah Frederick and Kylie Aufdengarten, fell by a score of 6-3 in doubles action.
In singles play, both Alfonso and Fiorella Mendez won eight games within their matches. Alfonso had a 5-3 lead on Marta Torres Rodriguez in the first set at the No. 1 position before Rodriguez rallied for the final four points of the set. Alfonso stayed even with Rodriguez to 3-3 in the second set before Rodriguez won the final three points to secure the win. After falling 6-2 in the first set at the No. 4 position, Mendez battled Kinsey Fields into a tiebreak situation to decide the second set. Fields came out on top to avoid going to a third and decisive set.
Kylie Aufdengarten held a 2-0 lead in the first set at the No. 6 position before Issabella Pensavalle rallied past for a 6-4 result in the first set. Aufdengarten won two of the games within the second set before Pensavalle secured the win. At No. 5, Aliyah Frederick fell 6-1, 6-2, while Maria Paz Diaz (No. 2) and Nicole Heyn (No. 3) won only one game within the 13 contested in both of their matches.
The Tigers will be at home for their next four matches, with three being in MIAA contests. FHSU faces Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday (Mar. 30) at 3 pm in their only contest scheduled this coming week.
