KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's and women's basketball teams combined to place 17 individuals on the 2021-22 MIAA Academic Honor Roll, released Monday by the league office. Nine members of the women's team were honored, while the men placed eight Tigers on the academic list.
In addition, the Tigers received six Scholar-Athlete Awards and a pair of MIAA Academic Excellence Awards. Both totals are the most in the conference.
On the men's side, Fort Hays State had two of the three Scholar-Athlete Award winners across the entire conference in Jared Vitztum and Nyjee Wright. Others on the academic honor roll include Traejon Davis, Bjarni Jonsson, Jackson Miller, Elijah Nnanabu, Gabe Pieschl and Devin Walker.
From the women's squad, Cydney Bergmann and Whitney Randall were two of eight athletes league-wide to earn both the Scholar-Athlete Award and the MIAA Academic Excellence Award. Olivia Hollenbeck and Katie Wagner also received the Scholar-Athlete Award, giving the Tigers four recipients, tied for the most in the league. Others on the academic honor roll include Sydney Golladay, Jaden Hobbs, Emma Ruddle, Jessie Sallach and Carly Thompson.
This is the third time Vitztum has earned the Scholar-Athlete Award, while Bergmann, Hollenbeck and Randall all picked up the honor for the second year in a row. It is the first-such honor for Wright and Wagner.
An MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 4.00 or better at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
To qualify as a Scholar-Athlete an individual must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 at the certifying member institution. They must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The student-athlete must also earn All-MIAA honors during the current season.
To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. Transfers and true freshman are recognized at the conclusion of the school year, after they meet the two terms of attendance requirement.
